Amsterdamage

I have been to Amsterdam 18 times and this book helps me each and every time (Thank you Tyce and Sara for turning me on to this guide!). I recently bought the 5th edition because my old one was just fallng apart. If you plan on traveling to or through AMS try to do it in the spring or summer, if not pack for a very cold wet trip! Make sure to use public trasportation as the cabs are extreemly expensive. I know it seems intimidating at first, but give it a try and your wallet will thank you. This guide is spot on take some time to go beyond tourisim and you will have a trip like no other. Free advice,mushrooms strong...The Pancake Bakery just down from the Anne Frank House is the best breakfast in town and it opens at 10am, much like everything else. Enjoy and be safe.

Can't really ask for more...

What can I say really? It's a guide book! As with any guide book, you have to expect changes will take place from the time of publication until the time you purchase it. But, then again, it's a GUIDEbook. It's not meant to be the final word.
Also, there is fairly extensive coverage on the coffeeshop culture and marijuana, so if those things offend you then this probably isn't the guidebook for you. You'd probably benefit from a Frommer's guidebook (or similar). Truth be told, there are many, many coffeeshops that don't even serve coffee!
On the other hand, the book is full of useful information, including suggested walking tours and some useful, albeit, limited maps. I found that most of the addresses are accurate (as they ought to be), which helps if you have a laptop or iPod touch. Simply plug in the address of where you are and where you want to go in Google maps and you have handy walking directions. Much better than trying to find addresses in Dutch!
As far as guidebooks go, this one is great. Manageable size (not one of those 1200 page tomes), so it fits in a backpack quite easily and won't weigh you down. All in all, I rate it 5 stars.

Always a Winner with "Let's Go"

As usual, Let's Go has written an excellent guide for the city you need. Especially, it is filled with $ saving tips and side trips -- no $200 a night hotels wasting half of the book.
Most importantly, though, Amsterdam is a special city. The governmental tolerance there (even if you do not choose to partake in the famous vices of this flowing canal metropolis) can be felt. For me, I was both happy and sad. Happy to be in a place where it is legal to do almost anything as long as you are not hurting anybody. Sad because part of me wonders how much my inner self has been diminished by growing up in a relatively fascist state.
Anyway, this guide leads to very inexpensive hotels, bars, "coffee shops," museums, and all that this wonderful place offers. It also includes some places with more bling if you want to splurge. Let's Go Amsterdam delivers a difficult and delicate city guide with professionalism, class, and the necessary cautions for a culture that resembles our own quite little.
