About the Author

James Hawes is a novelist and Kafka scholar with a Ph.D. in German literature. He is the author of A White Merc with Fins, White Powder, Green Light, and Speak for England. As an undergraduate at Oxford, Hawes was allowed---uniquely---to handle the original manuscript of Kafka's The Castle. He lives in Cardiff, Wales.

Silly and small- hearted

Had Hawes put an entirely different emphasis on his research it could have been seen as somewhat valuable. Had he stressed that there was alongside the Kafka of the myth and legend another Kafka who managed to rise to a high-place in his firm, who did attend literary outings and had friends, who engaged in transient sexual encounters occasionally, who was liked and popular among friends, and who had also a certain reputation among a small group as a genius- then he might have balanced the picture of Kafka as lonely, suffering, outcast, haunted, driven, angst- sick genius. Instead Hawes makes of the very minor externals of Kafka's life a major truth. It is not. And we have tons of evidence which tells us what Kafka really was. It is there in his Diaries, his Journals, his great great letters to friends, to those he was engaged to Frau Bauer, to Milena. We have in Kafka's 'Letter to his Father' the expression of his true relationship to his father. All the great evidence, that which Kafka intended for publication and that which he did not makes Hawes claims simply seem silly. The real Kafka is there in all- night vigil which brought forth the 'Judgment'. It is there in the countless beautiful paradoxical and self- critical remarks which fill the 'Journals'. The real Kafka is the whose relationships with women are a constant struggle with himself, and with his conception of his own fundamental loyalty to his task as writer.
How small Mr. Hawes is in trying to downplay and debunk those very sides of Kafka which are his essence.

Read After You Read Kafka

The book is a Kafka-killer if read before you read Kafka and a Kafka-extender if read after you read Kafka. The author flips the beetle of Kafka industry on its back for an original and captivating de-metamorphosing of the K.-myth. While the title ("Why You Should Read Kafka Before You Waste Your Life") promises existential lessons, the book, as noted by another reviewer here, is an alternate biography or, rather, a supplement/addendum to the official biographies. The tone (slightly sensationalizing, with the risk of metamorphosing one K.myth into another) and the message (of normalizing the man behind the official K. myth) seem to be in a bit of a conflict - which adds to the complexity of the work itself. In reading the comments to these reviews, somebody remarked that the original title (author's title) for UK edition was "Excavating Kafka." If, indeed, so, then the author clearly excels at his scholarly mandate. In sum, my advice is two-fold: a) to stay away from the book until you've had your fill of Kafka since reading this particular about-Kafka thesis will likely bias new reader's impression of Kafka (with the idea from the Trial that "text alone" stands notwithstanding); b) if you found Kafka of interest, I definitely recommend this book as a must post-Kafka about-Kafka read). Either way, do not rush to throw away your Kafka t-shirt from Prague!

Annoyingly over italicized and absently cited text

Every single page of "Why you Should Read Kafka Before you Waste your Life" has an italicized bit of text. Hawes uses italics for its conventional usage: to stress meaning, or call attention to an important area of information. However, he uses it on every single page, over and over again, making a read through extremely aggravating. It's as if the author had not yet developed a voice, so he overly used italics in his book to 'really show' people that he was a serious scholar with great ideas which needed to be pointed out, by him, on every friggin' page.

And then there's the lack of citations. Jesus christ, the lack of citations is appalling! I'm doing my thesis on Kafka, and I will be lucky if I could use this book even once due to the absence of a works cited page. I know some of the information in this book is accurate, but only because I have read it elsewhere (in books which used citations!!). If you are someone who has not read anything about Kafka before, DO NOT start here. Hawes is confusing, and if you ever wanted to double check a fact and consult his sources, you're out of luck.

On the brighter side, the book is funny, has nice pictures, and is unabashedly biased. Use it as a supplement to your Kafka reading, and not as a foundation.

A Great Read!!!

This book was absolutely wonderful. I have read many medical narratives and many books on infectious disease and global health. I read this book in a day and could not put it down. It is exciting and interesting. I highly recommend anyone interested in tropical medicine/infectious disease/global health care to read this book.

excellent and well written; a compelling story

From page one, The Lassa Ward was a compelling story that I couldn't put down. It was so captivating! A well written and thought provoking memoir, I couldn't stop thinking about the various people that Dr. Donaldson met, long after I finished reading. I wish there was a sequel to find out what happened with everyone. I highly recommend this book!

stereotyping run amock

I've always been a Gregor Demarkian fan but lately it seems to me Ms Haddam is less interesteed in telling a story and character development than she is in her current 'controversy of the month'. This time it's the evolutionists versus the creationists and while the mystery has little to do with either, the majority of the book and the characters therein are devoted to one side or the other. But regardless of the side, these characters are irrational to the highest degree. They are paranoid characatures of advocates either of intelligent design or secular humanism. t
Other than Gregor, it appears that there is not even one sane person who lives in Snow Hill. No wonder Gregor is perpetually bemused by what is going on. Dialogue, or soliquies, which often ramble on for pages are nothing but extended 'rants' against the 'other side'. Advocates of creationism repeat ad nauseam the anti sec - humanist mantra 'If there is no God, then there can be no morals'. while the Darwinists chant that all religion is evil and religious folks are bastions of willful ignorance. Haddam also manages the somehow hold small towns accountable for this kind of narrow minded intellectual insanity.

Everything is extreme in this novel. People speak in shouts, dialogue becomes diatribe. it's just way over the top. Haddams's novels didn't used to be this way, but lately she seems to have let the topic run away with the story and the topic run away with itself.

We don't have Tibor in this book (really the only link Haddam has left with reason and empathy) and the book reads like one long shout about how stupid, narrow minded, angry, or confused people living in a small town are. Sorry, Jane, but this just ain't true and the horses need to be reined in.

Not quite as good as it gets

I always await Jane Haddam's books eagerly, because they contain an interesting puzzle, delightful characters, and a theme that moves the book a bit deeper than run-of-the mill mysteries. Living Witness is a take on the evolution vs. creationism controversy, reminiscent of the Dover Area School Board court case of recent memory. Jane's takes on such issues are always fascinating, and, as usual, her research is exemplary; readers can access her sources and make up their own minds on the issue. The puzzle is set in motion by a murderous attack on an older woman who is a member of the school board in a small Pennsylvania town; the whodunnit and why are well disguised throughout the book (the clues are fair). Gregor Demarkian, Bennis Hannaford, Father Tibor and the usual characters of this long-running series are present and their stories are moving along. The small town characters are not sentimentalized, not portrayed as thoughtless hicks, but given personalities and opinions on many different aspects of the main issue.

Nevertheless, Jane Haddam has written better books. The issue overpowers the story to an extent that is rare in her work, and sometimes the dialogue comes across as little didactic speeches. Fans of her work (and I am one) will find much to enjoy, but if I were asked by someone who hadn't read her before, I would not recommend starting with this book; I'd recommend Somebody Else's Music or Cheating at Solitaire as a better introduction.

Did Jane Haddam Lose Her Temper?

First the good part: this is a reasonably strong Gregor Demarkian mystery.

Next the question: Since Gregor and Bennis are finally married, will the series continue? Their marriage received less attention than I would have liked, although there was some ingenuity and it was linked into Gregor's reason for taking this case.

Now the problem: Jane Haddam's mysteries include characters of whom she clearly disapproves. This is usually pretty good; she illustrates various popular character faults and disorders in a way that is usually enlightening. Here she tries and fails. Perhaps she just disapproves too much. Perhaps she failed to separate one flaw (incivility) from another (unreason) and so did not nail the characters cleanly. It would be a shame if this were the last of the Demarkian stories because the characters are not so much uninspired as uncrafted. Perhaps she was rushed; this seems to come on the heels of the last book. Perhaps she was so disgusted that she didn't want to put any more of herself into it (she admits her bias in the acknowledgements). Or perhaps she only half understands what she's attempting to portray. She is closer at heart to Bennis than to the coal miners and moonshiners.

I still recommend the book, but it is not Haddam's top tier. And she has not, to my mind, bested Precious Blood or A Stillness in Bethlehem. Still, it is far above Murder Superior (which might be better forgotten) and it is worth an evening.

On a geographical basis, it seems to me a fellow would be hard put to find a more widely distributed form of terrestrial omnivore than bears in general. All sharing remarkably similar characteristics beyond such cosmetic considerations as color and size, bears are found in different flavors just about everywhere but in Antarctica, and if the polar bear ever was able to get past the equator, there’s little question that the bottom of the earth would not be bearless.
This not being a zoological reference book, I can’t believe that the total readership interest in the South American spectacled bear or the Asian sun or black bears would be worth the calories expended to include them, although Lord knows I have the spare calories. So, it is my dearest hope that you don’t feel shortchanged by only being violently dissertated to on matters pertinent to grizzlies, browns, polars, blacks and sloth bears, any one of which, believe me, is better encountered in these pages than in its natural habitat unless you have an emerging death wish.
With the possible exception of the great cats, there probably has been more speculation, both correct and otherwise, written about bears than any other animal group. With good reason, too: they’re big, scary looking, and they bite. A recently processed pile of still-steaming blueberries encountered in heavy cover has an astonishingly stimulating effect upon the sense of foreboding of just about any hunter, fisherman, hiker or backpacker you can think of. There is probably a case to be made that this natural apprehension is a residual reaction to the days of yore when we started to solve the housing shortage by some very rude treatment of Pleistocene cave bears, whose rocky homes we undoubtedly usurped. The most recent thinking on the matter, incidentally, indicates that the huge cave bear—whose Latin name I am not about to look up—was most likely a pure vegetarian judging by the cusps of its teeth.
Personally, I doubt this idea of fear of bears stemming from the very old days. It just seems common sense to me to be scared motherless of any animal that has the potential for carnage that any full-grown bear does. As far as I’m concerned, if you’re not afraid of bears you’re doing something wrong.
With the concept firmly in mind that we have to start somewhere, why not begin this horror-fest with the bear the psychoanalysts would have a ball with: Ursus horribilis? Really, now, what sort of behavior would you bloody well expect from an animal named, in formal Latin, no less, the “Horrible Bear”? Perhaps it’s one of those chicken-or-the-egg things, but I suppose whether the grizzly is a most terrifying man-eater when so prompted or became such just to live up to his name isn’t very important, particularly since he most likely cannot read and understands not a syllable of Latin. Sure, we’re kidding around, whistling in the graveyard on our way home through the dark, moonless, bear-filled night. But there have been many times recently when there was nothing funny about spending the night in Montana’s Glacier National Park....
The August evening in 1967 was marvelous camping weather although the 60 glaciers and more than 200 lakes in the near 1,600 square miles of Montana wilderness probably had little to do with the coolness. A group of young people were bedded down in an area known as Granite Park, all asleep by midnight. Most probably thought they were having a nightmare when a bloodcurdling scream from 19-year-old Julie Helgerson raped the stillness, the teenager a little way off from the main body of sleepers. In the light of the anemic campfire, she was starkly outlined in the jaws of a tremendous grizzly bear. As she screamed and fought, it appeared for a moment that she might escape as the bear dropped her to severely bite a young man of the group in the legs and back. But, the bear seemed to prefer the more tender Julie and returned to bite her through the body and drag her several hundred feet where, for some unknown reason, he suddenly left the dying girl and ambled off into the night. By the time rangers from the park arrived, she was just a statistic. The young man who was also mauled survived after hospitalization.
It was a very bad night for 19-year-old girls in Glacier National Park. Just a few hours later, at four in the morning and 20 miles away, another group of campers were frightened awake by a grizzly who towered over them, growling like a thunderstorm. Like a flushing covey of quail, girls and boys scampered up trees and scattered into the blackness. All but one. Michele Koons of San Diego experienced the unspeakable terror of the zipper sticking on her sleeping bag! With the bear only feet away, she was bound and trussed by the unyielding nylon skin. The grizzly grabbed her. In numb panic, the rest of the party listened to her describe her own death. “He’s tearing my arm off!” was one shriek all agreed upon. “Oh, my God, I’m dead!”
Right she was.
If either of the girls killed that night in 1967 was missing any flesh, the press and my sources did not mention it. I cite the night of terror as a precedent of attack rather than of man-eating, although one must wonder what the bears would have done had they come upon solitary campers and were not disturbed with their kills. The odds against something as rare as fatal grizzly attacks upon two girls the same age, in the same park, 20 miles apart on the same night actually happening have given me a rather eerie feeling when I read the monthly Solunar Tables created and copywrited by my old friend John Alden Knight, which still appear in Field & Stream. These tables are purported to forecast periods of peak feeding activity for fish and game. That night they were pretty accurate.
The two grizzlies were shot and killed, proof of their perfidy having been confirmed by blood samples found on claws and muzzles.
Regarding the new class of man-eater, the “park killer,“ the bear is the classic North American example of this syndrome. Thirty-six people were mauled in less than 20 years in parks by bears and one more killed in 1972 at Yellowstone by a grizzly. Considering that well over two hundred million people (most are repeats) enter national parks each year, this isn’t much of a toll. But, don’t forget, not many parks have grizzlies.
It was nine years later that the first substantiated case of man-eating, or, if we carefully note the preferences of the Glacier Park bears, woman-eating occurred. If was another college girl, Mary Pat Mahoney of Highwood, Illinois, a student at the University of Montana. Mary Pat was 22 years old. She would get no older.

Reese arrived a few minutes later where he was joined by another ranger, a Californian on a “busman’s holiday” named Stuart Macy. Just outside the shredded tent lay the gore-smeared sleeping bag and nearby, a bloody T-shirt. A clear spoor of blood and drag marks led off into a thicket, the partially-eaten body of what used to be Mary Pat Mahoney was found about 300 yards from the site of her probable death.

A Correction and An Epilogue

In the book, the author relates that 20-year-old engineering student Chris Palumbo was injured when his left arm was attacked by an alligator, leaving it severed in two places. Actually, it was the right arm, and the surgeons at the University of Florida medical school's teaching hospital (which was literally only about 7 miles away) were able to save the arm, but only by way of a series of sugeries over the succeeding two-and-a-half years, and at a cost in current terms of upwards of probably a quarter million dollars. The first surgery alone took over 10 hours, and the initial hospital stay was approximately six weeks. Moreover, even after the treatment was completed, the arm was left with a 50% permanent disability rating per AMA guidelines. I might add that while the author says that when he was growing up he only saw alligators at an tourist-oriented alligator farm, for most Americans the remoteness of contact which he conveys would have to be extended to watching *Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom* on TV, listening to the narration of Marlin Perkins as he sat just as comfortably in a TV studio someplace as we would be at home.

While somewhat dated, this book is still written in a compelling style and thankfully does not encourage the currently popular view of the wildlife preservation community that wild animals deserve greater protection at law than do human beings.

A valuable and educational book

This collection of true encounters with dangerous animals is interesting and instructive and warns us of how unpredictable wild animals are, whether they are in the wild or in captivity. All of the familiar threats to man are documented here: sharks, crocodiles, wolves, bears and the great cats of Africa. Some individuals were lucky and survived or escaped from an attack, while others were not as fortunate and were maimed for life, if not taken as prey by the animals. Many people, especially young children, like to pet animals without giving any thought to the danger they're in when in close proximity to wildlife. Monkeys, wild pigs and even deer are just dangerous in their natural habitat as are the more ferocious species of the animal kingdom. This book is a must for campers, hikers and vacationers.

This magic kingdom consists of five boroughs

Here is an ideal holiday gift for anyone who has ever visited the New York City area during the holiday season because it will evoke so many fond memories. For others who plan to visit the area for the first time as well as for residents who are eager to explore new sources of magic and delight, this book offers dozens of suggestions of where to go, what to see and do, etc. in the five boroughs...especially Manhattan (e.g. Radio City Music Hall, Rockefeller Center, the Wollman Rink in Central Park, and Washington Square Park) but also the Bronx (e.g. the New York Botanical Garden and the Bronx Zoo), Brooklyn (e.g. Grand Army Plaza and Dyker Heights), Queens (e.g. Flushing Meadows-Corona Park), and Staten Island (e.g. Historic Richmond Town). Michael Storrings provides a brief but eloquent Preface to his series of exquisite watercolor drawings, including those that are devoted to 39 different special treats that extend from the Macy's Thanksgiving Parade that employees of R.H. Macy & Company started in 1924 and concludes with a tradition that has continued since 1907 as each New Year is welcomed in Times Square.

A must have for your coffee table

I have Michael's holiday ornaments and have enjoyed them through the years. His book, A Very New York Christmas, is a great compliment and makes for a wonderful gift for the season. As I've read this book, it brought memories of the New York City that I know and experienced for many Christmases; having lived in the scenes that he depicted with minute detail (love your pugs Michael).

A watercolour treatment to a great city makes this book a definite conversation piece and a must have for your coffee table. This book and Michael's New York holiday ornaments make a perfect pair.

About the Author

Elizabeth Enright (1909-1968) was born in Oak Park, Illinois, but spent most of her life in or near New York City. Her mother was a magazine illustrator, while her father was a political cartoonist. Illustration was Enright's original career choice and she studied art in Greenwich, Connecticut; Paris, France; and the Parson's School of Design in New York City. After creating her first book in 1937, she developed a taste, and quickly demonstrated a talent, for writing.

Throughout her life, she won many awards, including the 1939 John Newbery Medal for Thimble Summer and a 1958 Newbery Honor for Gone-Away Lake. Among her other beloved titles are her books about the Melendy family, starting with The Saturdays, published in 1941. Enright also wrote short stories for adults, and her work was published in The New Yorker, The Ladies Home Journal, Cosmopolitan, The Yale Review, Harper's, and The Saturday Evening Post. She taught creative writing at Barnard College. Translated into many languages throughout the world, Elizabeth Enright's stories are for both the young and the young at heart.

My favorite of the Melendy series

I have read and reread the Melendy Family series -- all four books -- since I was about 8 years old, and that's closer to 40 years ago now than I care to think. These books all have stayed with me emotionally, are all well loved -- and all absolutely are worth discovering as an adult if you missed them as a child.
But "Then There Were Five" remains my favorite of the four. It is the most like a "real" (grownup) novel in its plot, in the way the characters grow and change, and in the very vivid scenes set throughout. I still get shivers from the description of Mark and Rush spying on Oren and his pals at their illegal still, and especially from the chapter about the fire that sends a homeless Mark to live with his friends, the Melendys. The dark edges, to me, are what make this book the most compelling of the series. Yet it also brims with all the familial love and good-natured humor of the other Enright works.
This book, which originally ended the Melendy series ("Spiderweb for Two" came years later), is the one that stands out as a truly dimensional narrative work. I've always thought it would make a terrific family film, if one could only be made that was faithful to the World War II period and to the characters as well as the basic plot.
One of the things I love about Elizabeth Enright is how she educates her young readers while she entertains them. In "The Saturdays," I learned a bit about Wagner's "Siegfried" through Rush's trip to the Metropolitan Opera, and what petits fours were through Randy's tea with Mrs. Oliphant. In "The Four-Story Mistake," through Mona's radio acting job, I learned that radio was just as important to the 1940s as TV to the 1960s. In "Then There Were Five," thanks to Mark's homegrown talent for natural history, I learned about the Perseids meteor showers that come every August, and that an amanita mushroom is pale poison. (I also learned, thanks to Mona and Randy's kitchen disasters, that canning tomatoes isn't nearly as easy as it looks.) And I found out an amazing number of things about moths from Oliver's hobby of collecting caterpillars.
These are great books. Find them, buy them, read them!

Darkness and Light

The third Melendy novel has a darker undertone than the preceding two, with the introduction of Mark Herron, a lonely orphan befriended by Rush and Randy, and his guardian-cousin, the fearsome Oren Meeker. There are thrills and heart-clutchers a-plenty--Rush and Mark spying on an illegal whiskey still, a vividly described house fire--but they're nicely leavened by the lighter incidents like the character of Mr. Jasper Titus, rural gourmand, and the resolve of Mona and Randy to undertake the canning of the family's victory-garden produce. World War II, also, is a more looming presence (the time seems to be the summer of '42), as the family's ancient car, "the Motor," is up on jacks "for the duration" (they get around by way of a one-horse surrey!), Rush and Randy start a scrap drive "for the soldiers," and the Melendys' beloved father takes a hush-hush war job in Washington, which ultimately leads to the kids being left on their own when housekeeper Cuffy is unexpectedly called away to help an injured cousin. But in the end everything comes out right, as it should in a juvenile. This is the book to which Enright was leading up with the previous two, and perhaps the best she wrote. The whole trilogy would make a splendid miniseries on TV (is any executive reading this? I'll even do the script!).

This IS the best of the series!

I agree with those who say that this is the best book out of the four. It's definitely the most complex, and has the most character development. Mark, who was an abused child long before that became a catch-phrase, is sketched out wonderfully. Oren's sister, who he mentioned early on, must have been a good influence on him, because he's resilient, kind and intelligent, despite what he has to put up with from Oren. I agree with Rush when he said the Melendys were the lucky ones, to get Mark for a brother!
Although I did think Rush was pretty rude, barging in every day while the girls were canning, and demanding to be fed immediately! Did he think that just because Mona and Randy didn't have a five-course meal ready and waiting, that they were going to let the guys starve? And it's not like they'd been doing nothing! God bless Mr. Titus for helping them out!
My favorite bits were when Rush and Mark spy on Oren and his pals at the still---that was real adult talk, but still appropriate for a kids' book: not easy to bring off---and the auction and fair. I loved when the Delacey brothers showed up and bid on the boar. "The three of them should be very happy together"---good one, Willy!
And I felt so bad for Oliver when he fell down the well! That was a good device, too. For so long, he'd gotten so little attention because he didn't demand any, and look what finally happened. It forced the other kids to realize how much they cared about him, and show it, and they handled it themselves, showing how capable they were. Good for them!
And I also liked when Cuffy was leaving to visit her cousin and had to cram weeks worth of nagging into an hour. "Close the windows whenever it rains! (Duh!) Call me long distance if anything goes wrong! (And that will help, how?) Don't forget to feed the DOGS! (Like they'd let you!)"
