From Publishers Weekly
The lack of a satisfying solution to the whodunit at the heart of Tallman's fourth historical set in 19th-century San Francisco (after 2007's The Cliff House Strangler) is the only real flaw in an otherwise solid read. Idealistic and iconoclastic attorney Sarah Woolson investigates the bludgeoning murder of botanist Nigel Logan, who was at a party with Woolson's judge father only the night before and whose body was found near the Woolson home. Several days later, a friend of Logan's, a church deacon, apparently falls victim to the same killer. When the police latch onto some Chinese immigrants as the culprits, despite the absence of any real evidence, Woolson bravely takes on their defense. Convincing period detail supports an engaging lead who's a more plausible character than, say, Rhys Bowen's Molly Murphy, a PI in early 20th-century New York City. The romantic subplots don't overwhelm the mystery, but the ending will surprise few. (Mar.)

Great Series, Sarah Woolson is wonderful
By Robin
I listened to the first 3 books and have just finished reading the fourth (which I hope will be available on Audible soon). If you like historical fiction/ mysteries you will enjoy these books. Unlike a previous reviewer I find the main character Sarah W. interesting and full of pluck. These stories are set in the 1880's 40 years before women won the right to vote and therefore, I find Shirley Tallman's male characters and their sexism and racism to be perfectly believable and Sarah's frustration with her society and the men who control it to be reasonable. The author has several important male characters who are neither sexist nor racist so she does not generalize about all men. It is clear that the author has done her research on the role of women in the 1880's and in the legal profession. It is hard to believe but some law schools such as Harvard did not admit women until the 1950's. The mysteries are good but I enjoy the books because of the characters. I think if you enjoy Elizabeth Peters you would also enjoy this series. I hope there will be many more books in this series and that the love story will become even more central and lead to further growth for the character of Sarah. Anna Fields was a great narrator and will be missed.

Mystery Solved
By Shelly Itkin
Mrs. Tallman has scored a total winner in her Scandal On Rincon Hill. Of course we are all familiar with the spinster Sarah Woolson who is an attorney and who has a heart and who is not above making up her own mind even if it could get her into trouble which should be her middle name.
When two deaths occur two from her home you know Sarah is going to get involved. When two innocent men are accused of the crime Sarah goes into action and agrees to defend them.
What she discovers and how she goes about it is exciting and keeps you so interested in the book you wont be able to put it down. If you have not read her others this will make you a fan to get out and read the other three books Mrs. Tallman has written about Sarah.
Sarah in love???? Lots of unexpected surprises in this book but by far the biggest is the actual killer. A MUST READ.

Entertaining
By doc peterson
The fourth book in the Sarah Woolson series is an entertaining read. Like any relationship, after the first whirlwind romance, the blush and shine on the partnership begins to fade, and things hit a lull. It is this first bump that makes or breaks the relationship: either it will find a second wind and bloom again, or it will be a bust. WIth Tallman it is still early to tell how the Sarah Woolson series will go, but things look encouraging.

I am a fan of Sarah Woolson - I like the idea of a strong, independent woman as protagonist. I love Tallman's descriptions of San Francisco (a world-class city, all the more so with her descriptions of it in the late 19th century) and the mysteries themselves are pretty good. In _Scandal on Rincon Hill_, Woolson represents a young lady who was a mistress of a powerful and influential newspaper owner (allusions to Hearst?) who seeks restitution, and two wrongly imprisioned Chinese immigrants accused of several grisly murders. The plot was entertaining, if not particularly page-turning, its resolution a bit anti-climactic. What really rankled me was the liberal use of exclaimation in Woolson's dialogue - a personal preference, I guess, but I found it a bit exasperating.

These misgivings aside, I remain a fan of Tallman's work and will certainly follow the series as it continues. There are clear attempts to grow the main charactersand develop them more - both romantically (Sarah has several beaus in pursuit of her, much to her chagrin) as well as professionally. I found this encouraging, as its evident that Tallman is not willing to rehash old plot lines and let the characters go stale. While its not as strong or interesting as the previous books in the series, I will return for more.

From Publishers Weekly
Welcome Back! Old favorites are being reissued in force this fall. Elizabeth Enright's Melendy Quartet follows siblings Mona, Rush, Miranda (Randy, for short) and Oliver. First published in 1941, The Saturdays kicks off the series and centers on the foursome's Independent Saturday Afternoon Adventure Club (I.S.A.A.C.), an allowance-endowed venture formed so one lucky Melendy can enjoy a solo sojourn each week. In The Four-Story Mistake (1942) the family moves from their city brownstone to the country; Then There Were Five (1944) describes what happens when the siblings befriend an orphan; and in Spiderweb forTwo: A Melendy Maze (1951), when everyone else leaves for school, Randy and Oliver are left to solve a mystery. The author's charming pen-and-inks punctuate all four volumes. (Sept.)

My reading list at retirement
By Barbara Rose
While at a garage sale this summer with my granddaughter, we came across some of the early Trixie Belden books, and I bought them for my g/d, after she promised to lend them to me when she was finished. I enjoyed them so much, even tho' they were "children's" books, that I started browsing Amazon for other books I had enjoyed in grade school.
The Four Story Mistake was one of them, and sure enough, Amazon had it available. I ordered it, got it in 3 days, and read it that night. Gosh, the memories that brings back. Very fun story. I intend to order the other books in this series, and continue browsing for other childhood favorites. It kinda varies the reading experience, plus is a nice walk down memory lane.

The Four-Story Mistake
By A Customer
Although I bought this book for my 9-year old daughter, I decided to read it one Saturday afternoon when my supply of reading material ran out. I thoroughly enjoyed the book - it's a terrific story, the characters are wonderful, and the focus on family and the lack of "electronic entertainment" make it a book full of important lessons that have been mostly lost for kids today.
I wish, however, that I had realized that the book reveals the secrets behind Christmas - because of this, I have hidden the book until my daughter discovers this truth on her own. Kids today have too little magic in their lives, so I'm thankful that I read the book BEFORE she did. Please keep this in mind before ordering it for your child.

From Publishers Weekly
Cautioning readers against getting arrested, Nagorski proceeds with "your recipe book" of revenge, a tongue-in-cheek guide to achieving vigilante justice for relationships gone bad. A writer, director and producer in New York, Nagorski handles all the angles, taking a historical-cultural look at methods for dealing with marital transgressions; the ancient Egyptians, for example, whipped a man "a thousand times with rods" for cheating, and sliced off a woman's nose. Modern-day retribution pales in comparison, evidenced in tales of recent celebrity breakups, chapters devoted to payback songs (e.g. Hilary Duff's "Dignity," Kelly Clarkson's "Never Again") and movies (e.g. Fatal Attraction, A Perfect Murder). Jilted women may find her barbed thesis on heartbreak-thinking about revenge can be as satisfying as exacting it-cathartic and a bit comforting, but might want to stay away if the wound is too fresh.

“Cautioning readers against getting arrested, Nagorski proceeds with 'your recipe book' of revenge, a tongue-in-cheek guide to achieving vigilante justice for relationships gone bad. “Ready your blowtorch, ladies. But before you fire it up, you better consult the new manual: The Down and Dirty Dish on Revenge by Eva Nagorski. It's a how-to for anyone who's ever been down in the jowls after a little heartbreak, and, instead of forgiveness, wants cold, hard revenge. And luckily, since the 'Internet has put a new spin on vengeance,' there now are more creative ways of seeking revenge than ever before (nude pictures, anyone?). Nagorski, a former TV writer who has surely experienced one or two bad breakups of her own, has even included a history of adultery and a wide array of expert opinion.” ―The Daily Beast

“The book, which is aimed at women even though Nagorski acknowledges men suffer the results of infidelity too, vacillates between outlandish stories and commentary by academics on the merits and dangers of getting revenge. Imagine a mélange of self-help (the 'Revenger Quiz' gauges your level and style of vindictiveness), satire (a recipe for 'the cold dish of revenge' includes "one hot thong he'll never see you in"), history and psychology, written in the tone of a chick-lit novel.” ―Macleans

“Eva Nagorski's book is witty and an easy read. I laughed out loud through many parts of the book and you will too. This book is full of hilarious tips on revenge.” ―Stephany Alexander, author of "Sex, Lies & the Internet" and Founder/CEO of WomanSavers.com

“Eva Nagorski's The Down and Dirty Dish on Revenge is the non-fiction love child of The First Wive's Club and The Godfather–a fast, funny, anecdote-filled treatise on executing and enjoying revenge.” ―Lynn Schnurnberger, co-author The Botox Diaries and Mine Are Spectacular!

“Whether you're fantasizing or downright serious about getting back at the scum-bucket in your life, Eva Nagorski's The Down and Dirty Dish on Revenge offers all the inspiration you'll need to orchestrate the most devious and satisfying of paybacks.” ―Karen Quinn, author of The Ivy Chronicles and Holly Would Dream

“A savage and intoxicating brew of a book about revenge. Somehow it lifts the spirits.” ―Bruce Jay Friedman, author of Three Balconies: Stories and a Novella, About Harry Towns and Sexual Pensees

“Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned -- unless it's a man who's been dumped for someone younger, richer and better-looking. Eva Nagorski explains why even the most gentle of lovers suddenly turn into members of La Cosa Nostra the moment they're given the elbow.” ―Toby Young, author of How to Lose Friends and Alienate People

A Great Book
By StuartSchneiderman
Nagorski tackles a difficult and complex topic with great wit and intelligence. Her book is not so much an instruction manual as a survey of the way different people at different times have tried to turn the tables on cheaters. Everyone has at some time been faced with the need to restore shattered pride. Surely, the best approach is to consider that there are a number of alternatives, some legal, some not so legal. As the book shows, there are many options. Take your time, think it through, examine the options, make a decision... and then serve it up cold.

dishing the down and dirty
By carla capretto
i just finished'the down and dirty dish on revenge' by eva nagorski. what a great read! it's filled with personal stories of revenge (and revenge gone wrong), history, some quotes, tips, and much more. it's a book you may consider keeping close at hand after you're through reading - because you never know when it might be needed as 'reference material' after a relationship turns bad.....very, very bad. but who knows? reading this book could be more than enough - because vicarious revenge might just do the trick!

fun stuff
By Superfast Reader
Breezy and snazzy, The Down and Dirty Dish on Revenge does a lot with what seems on the surface to be a thin premise. Eva Nagorski looks at revenge in literature, through history, and across different cultures, with almost a sociologist's eye. She peppers the book with real-life anecdotes of revenge both creative and mean-spirited. And she closes the book with a chapter on the virtues of forgiveness as the best revenge of all.

A lot of the stories that Nagorski presents don't seem to me to be revenge per se-more like justice, if you ask me! I love it when a cheater gets his or her comeuppance, particularly in the form of a creative divorce settlement, as in the woman who won all her husband's baseball collectibles then sold them on Ebay. I'm less a fan of the people who make sex tapes public-though I suppose the people who make sex tapes to begin with should know the risk involved.

Christian theology teaches forgiveness because even righteous anger can quickly turn sinful, and because only God can enact true justice. However, I do think it is possible to teach someone a hard lesson, if your aim is to bring them to repentance. Revenge may feel good at the time, but it will never be as satisfying as true forgiveness.

Friends, Writers, and Other Countrymen: A Memoir, by Sidney Offit

“Sidney Offit has devised a marvelous mirror of his unique personality as well as a one of a kind tour of the New York literary world in the last half century. Anyone even faintly interested in books will find it impossible to put down.”---Thomas Fleming, bestselling author of Liberty! The American Revolution

Sidney Offit’s charming memoir of a writer’s life ingeniously reflects some of the greatest (and most infamous) literary, political, and sports personalities of our century. His early days in Baltimore (where he met H. L. Mencken and entertained Robert Frost) are as engaging as his later encounters with Dylan Thomas, John Steinbeck, Pablo Neruda, Heinrich Böll, and some of the era’s greatest ballplayers: Robinson, Mantle, Mays, and Williams.

Mixing with a remarkable and diverse crowd, led Sidney to run-ins and adventures with Truman Capote (“What kind of guy are you?”), Jackie Kennedy (in a corner), Kurt Vonnegut (who identified Sidney as his “best friend”), the incomparable Toni Morrison, and other bards, muses, and just plain folk. Their conversations are recalled with gentle humor and a keen eye for a New York where casual and spontaneous encounters may shape what the country reads or where a stroll around the corner can change a life.

Praise for Sidney Offit's "Friends, Writers, and Other Countrymen":

“It is possible that Sidney Offit knows more famous and interesting people than anyone else on earth, and what is more, has a funny and shrewdly observed story about each of them.... He is truly 20th Century New York City’s answer to Samuel Pepys.”---Michael Korda, author of Charmed Lives and Ike

“Sidney Offit was the man. He was there.... For more than a half century Offit has interacted with one big cheese after another. And now he recounts to our utter glee, what he saw, did, and heard. Sid pushes the reader---already satiated---to the greedy expectation after each chapter of: who’s next?”--- Barry Beckham, author of My Main Mother

“What a wonderful book—as they say in Dublin, “I couldn’t leave it down!” His novelist’s eye, boundless generosity of spirit, and robust delight in the strenuous pleasures of metropolitan life are evident on every page of this irresistible memoir by a perennially youthful gentleman of letters.”--Joel Connaroe, President Emeritus, J.S. Guggenheim Foundation

“[Sidney Offit’s] latest contribution to American letters is wise, intimate and historically invaluable. I gulped it down with amazement. Offit made me laugh. And in just one sentence, he made me cry…I love every word. I even love the commas. But most of all, I love a big-hearted gentleman curious about people who writes like an angel.”--Patricia Volk, author of To My Dearest Friends

“This astonishing memoir proves that if you know Sidney Offit, as I do, you are no more than one degree of separation from everybody you ever heard of, and I mean Pearl Buck, Sly Stallone, Borges, Pele....”---Roy Blount Jr. Long Time Leaving: Dispatches From Up South

“This book stands in the first rank of American autobiographies, and gives us a matchless contribution to our recent social and cultural history.”---Charles Bracelen Flood, Former President, PEN, American Center.

“More than a memoir about the writers life, this is a book about how at their best writers speak and dream for us all.”---Marita Golden author of After

“Knowing Sid has been one of the great pleasures of my life—he is unique in today’s world: a true man-about-town, but one who views his friends and acquaintances with the greatest generosity and compassion.”---Mary Pope Osborne, author of The Magic Tree House series

“Offit has been as important to American arts and letters as any of those to whom he characteristically defers. He is our wise and cheerful host. And the nation’s writers would be lost without him.”---Roger Rosenblatt, author of Lapham Rising and Beet

“There’s a rumor that if you wake Sidney in the middle of the night, he sticks out his hand and says, “Nice to meet you!” In this warm, funny book, Sidney’s gregarious spirit goes rollicking through the pages as he introduces the reader to one fascinating character after another.”---James Stevenson, author, cartoonist, originator of Lost and Found New York

Friends, Writers, and Other Countrymen
IRandom Encounters from JHU to NYC: 1940s and 1950s1H. L. Mencken: Lessons in Smoking and First-Edition Best BetsCirca 1946I learned about smoking and collecting from H. L. Mencken by way of Ellen Glasgow. When I returned to Baltimore from Wayne, Pennsylvania, during the years I attended the Valley Forge Military Academy, 1942 to 1946, I had few friends and, with the exception of my kid brother Benson, no one with whom to share enthusiasms. One of my classmates had mentioned the novels of a Virginian friend of his family--Ellen Glasgow. John Copley Travis, whom I considered the most literary and sophisticated of my chums, spoke about his father's collection of first editions. These slight references were all the inspiration I needed at the age of sixteen to become a collector of Ellen Glasgow first editions. This hobby mystified both my mother, who loved books but saw no particular virtue in the rarity of the edition, and my dad, whose reading was restricted to the racing form and the local papers. Nonetheless, my mother didn't discourage me and my father bankrolled my passion with a modest investment.I would walk from our family's apartment on Lake Drive past the islands of grass on Park Avenue, across the busy intersection at North Avenue. Then I'd cut over the railroad bridge to Charles Street and continue on to the Peabody Book Shop, where it was not only possible to search through used books but also to sit in a pleasant atrium and feast on bratwurst, knockwurst, German potato salad, and a mug of local beer.It was at Smith's Books on Howard Street, however, that I began my Glasgow collection and often encountered Henry L. Mencken. I recall a portly, shining face, hair parted in the middle, mouth engaged with a corncob pipe or cigar as he chatted with Mr. Smith.I recognized Mr. Mencken from my childhood. In the thirties my father was one of Baltimore's most successful bookmakers. Although his professional talents were unknown to me at the time, I was aware that on our Sunday outings we visited the best restaurants and hotel dining rooms in town. My father seemed to be known by everyone. Bartenders, headwaiters, the best-dressed guests, and certainly every man smoking a cigar greeted him. Although there was little conversation, I detected an unmistakable respect, even reverence in their regards. Not exactly so with Mr. Mencken. As we made our way to the main dining room of the Rennert Hotel, he would be sitting at the bar with a cigar over a drink and as we passed he would acknowledge my father with a vaguely amused nod of the head or a chipper "How do you do?" My mother always identified him: "That's H. L. Mencken. He's a newspaper man."I had heard that my father sold newspapers on the streets of Baltimore when he was eight years old and made enough money to contribute to the support of his five brothers and sister. My dad, too, smoked cigars from time to time, so I assumed H. L. Mencken, like my dad, stood on street corners hustling papers. That impression was so indelible it remained even after my mother later expressed admiration for the magazines Smart Set and American Mercury, or quoted two of the more famous wrap-ups to his "The Free Lance" columns in The Baltimore Sun--"Swat the fly ... Boil your drinking water."I felt sufficiently comfortable with this vague but "historic" connection that I began to mimic the "Sage of Bawlamer" by plunking a cigar in my mouth when visiting Smith's. I'm not sure if Mr. Mencken was in the shop when I purchased my first edition of Glasgow's In This Our Life, but I do recall he celebrated my acquisition of Vein of Iron by passing along to me a free cigar and the advice, "Never relight a stogie once it dies on you, my boy. Read the message from above and treat yourself to another blessing from below."That was not all I learned. After I lit up, he suggested with a voice that remains in my memory a blend of W. C. Fields and Winston Churchill, "You'd be better advised to collect Willa Cather."FRIENDS, WRITERS, AND OTHER COUNTRYMEN. Copyright © 2008 by Sidney Offit. All rights reserved. SIDNEY, YOU SHOULD HAVE DONE BETTER.
By Arnold Kane
It gives me no pleasure to report how disappointed I was in Sidney Offit's latest book, "Friends, Writers and Other Countrymen." I was looking forward to bright, funny and interesting stories about the many friends and celebrities Offit writes about. Instead, the book reads like a dull super market shopping list. The reader doesn't really learn anything new or exciting about the subjects in this memoir. It was written so matter-of-factly I had the feeling that Mr. Offit had a more important engagement and just wanted to get this thing finished.

Lawyer Boy: A Case Study on Growing Up, by Rick Lax

After college, Rick Lax moved back into his parents’ house. The closest thing he had to a job was eating his parents’ food, sitting on his parents’ couch, and watching The Price is Right. An amateur magician, he spent the rest of his time practicing card tricks and rope tricks. And though he could tie four different slipknots, the necktie posed some difficulties.

Rick’s father, a successful Michigan attorney, told Rick it was time to move out and enter the real world. Rick certainly wasn’t going to get a job, so he went to law school instead.

This is the story of Rick’s journey from childhood to lawyerhood.

In Lawyer Boy, Rick uses the skills he developed as a magician to succeed in class, and learns how to become a lawyer without becoming his father. His journey through law school was exhausting, exciting, and infuriating, and, the way he tells it, so funny it’s criminal.

From Publishers Weekly
First-time author Lax delivers an entertaining and sometimes zany look at the first year of law school. Although he dreams of being a professional magician, Lax realizes after college that being a lawyer—like his father and most of his relatives (he provides a family tree showing the remarkable number of lawyers who are relatives)—is inevitable. After being accepted into the DePaul School of Law in Chicago, where passenger trains screamed past the classroom every ten minutes, he finds that the world of torts and criminal law is both like and unlike everything he had imagined. The workload is still brutal—as a professor tells him, For the next year, the American legal system will be your girlfriend. But Lax's discoveries of what he didn't expect offer fascinating up-to-date insights such as the inevitability of the depression he develops (lawyers are about four times more likely to experience clinical depression than the general population) and the hard fact that [l]aw schools don't fail students like they used to. They need the tuition dollars to stay competitive. (July)

Review

"Immensely entertaining."

—A.J. Jacobs, author of The Know-It-All and The Year of Living Biblically

"Rick Lax is really funny and uses his background in magic to see through the bullshit and hypocrisy that make up the law school experience. I'm really glad he's getting the law degree so he has a job other than magic—we don't need this kind of competition."

—Penn Jillette, author of Sock, co-host of Showtime's Bullsh*t!, and the larger, louder half of the performing team Penn & Teller

"A very entertaining work by a clever, hopeful, and unavoidably unscrupulous guy. My kinda book."

—Harry Anderson, author of Games You Can't Lose and star of Night Court and Dave's World

"Rick Lax may be at law school—and he may try to impress girls at parties by doing magic tricks—but he isn't a total geek. Okay, that's a lie. He is a total geek—but Lawyer Boy is thoroughly entertaining nevertheless."

—Toby Young, author of How to Lose Friends and Alienate People and The Sound of No Hands Clapping

"Lawyer Boy is a blast . . . Rick Lax is an ideal guide to law school, generous with practical advice and juicy gossip. It’s The Paper Chase on nitrous—an oddball’s journey into the deepest inner circles of law school hell. The absolute best magician/law student/cowbellist memoir ever written."

—Christopher Noxon, author of Rejuvenile

"Rick Lax writes with a sharp wit and a fine sense of the absurd. Lawyer Boy might not help anyone succeed in law school, but it will certainly make the experience more enjoyable."

—Steven Lubet, author of Lawyers' Poker

loved lawyer boy
By Rebaboo
I bought this book because my son is a L1 and I thought it would bring me a little closer to understanding what his law school experience is like. It is humorous and easy to read. Some of the scenarios my son speaks of I have read about in the book!

I read his blog too.
By R
Yeah I read Rick's blog too...and the book is even better...and it's not one of those blogs-to-books with no new content; this is all original stuff. Chasing child thieves thru the streets of Chicago, helping car accident victims, stopping shoplifters, dating strippers...tell me that stuffs not original.

My one complaint, and I agre with that other reviews in this respect, is that at 288 pages it is kinda short...though I doubt that other reviewer actually read it in 3 hours, as he claimed...I mean, he tagged the words "douche" and "author is a tool" As another reviewer pointed out, he clearly didn't read the book but has a vendetta. Maybe Lax got a higher grade than him on a test or something. HA!

All and all, this book is different from all other books Ive read this year, and you could do worse than spending a few hours with it.

A very funny, creative and well-written book

I read this book and reviewed it on my own blog (which I won't even plug here because I'm not shilling for that, either), and as I said there I think this is a very good and genuinely funny book. I probably should give it 5 stars, but I am giving it 4 only because I mostly reserve 5-star ratings for books by people like Faulkner or Jesus. But this is really good. You won't be disappointed.

Since for some reason seven people have tagged the one negative review as "helpful," I do want to respond to that one. I, at least, am not a family member or "Friend of Rick" or corporate shill. I don't know what that's all about. I am an attorney and writer who is irritatingly good at spotting typos, and I have read the whole book and if there are any, there aren't many. So don't be "lead astray," as that reviewer (ironically) wrote. The book is well done.

Vote for Larry (The Larry Series), by Janet Tashjian

After becoming what he so clearly and strongly resisted―a consumer―Josh Swensen finds himself in a paranoid state of no return. That is, until he's kidnapped and coaxed into resurfacing as Larry, his old activist persona. Before long, Larry is back on the scene with much more on his mind than anti-consumerism―this time, he wants to affect change in government. And Larry isn't taking a conventional path or starting small in local government. He just doesn't do things halfway. But can he really become an eighteen-year-old president of the United States? Even if he can, is he sure he really wants to?

Amazon.com Review
After faking his own death in the last book (a "pseudocide") and then taking on a second phony identity, the allegedly real 17-year-old protagonist of the Gospel According to Larry shows up on author Janet Tashjian's doorstep again, with another manuscript detailing his latest exploits. Last time around, Josh changed the world by fighting global consumerism as Internet alter ego Larry; this time, he's going for the big enchilada as just plain ol' Josh--in a run for the presidency and an attempt to change U.S. politics forever. (And who's his running mate? Unrequited love Beth, of course.)

After going underground as a student at C.U.-Boulder, Josh (briefly "Mark") finds his anti-consumer ideals slipping--he tries to maintain his vow of austerity ("fewer than 75 possessions, in constant rotation"), but the slippery slope of a new girlfriend and an even newer credit card finds Josh in a Polo sweatshirt and Nautica pajamas before he can say "Walden Pond." Fortunately, Beth sweeps back into his life again with a big plan--and, more importantly, the proper jealousy-fueled inspiration, thanks to her Harvard boyfriend--to bring Josh back from the "dead" and into politics.

Fans of Tashjian's last award-winning outing will love catching up with their favorite activist superhero, as an almost unbelievable presidential campaign unfolds, amidst copious pop-culture references (U2's Bono is back, and Josh and Beth appear on the Simpsons), real-life stats about youth and the distribution of wealth in America, and--instead of Thoreau, this time around--quotes from the likes of Martin Luther King, Jr., Jim Hightower, and Paul Wellstone. Maybe it's just her "subject"/character's irresistible alacrity and idealism, but somehow Tashjian channels enough youthful hope and energy to inspire any proto-activist, adult or teen alike. (Ages 14 and up) --Paul Hughes

From School Library Journal
Grade 9 Up-Josh (aka Larry) is back-and so are Beth, Peter, Mom's spirit at Bloomingdale's, and even his old nemesis, betagold. This time, the topic de jour is politics-the electoral game, campaign financing, crooked politicians, and the power of the vote. The story begins with Larry finding a new girlfriend who has him out shopping and wearing designer clothes, until he is kidnapped by Beth, who wants him to return home and run for state representative. But that's not enough-Larry decides to run for president. Never mind that he is only 18-Congress can change that rule! When his campaign begins to gain momentum, the story's pace picks up, and the mysterious betagold reappears. Tashjian has written another sermonizing book disguised as Larry. Not that the lessons aren't interesting-they are-but in this book, they feel more like lessons. In The Gospel According to Larry (Holt, 2001) the idea was fresh and interesting, but this time it seems almost forced. The story itself is good, but is marred by sequel syndrome, unnecessary frills, and jumpy writing. Larry's fans will eat it up, but it needs Gospel to carry its weight.

From Booklist
Gr. 7-10. When readers left Josh Swenson, the anticonsumerism guru from The Gospel according to Larry (2001), he had faked his suicide to avoid the hoopla that was messing with his message. Here Josh finds his way back (well, his best friend, Beth, discovers him and then kidnaps him) to run for president of the U.S. Like the previous book (which probably needs to be read first), this is part allegory and part political thriller, and once again, Josh's plans to protect the planet and involve young people in the care and feeding of democracy go awry. The spirited story focuses on 18-year-old Josh's presidential campaign; although he's too young to be elected, a stunning show of support results in a constitutional amendment lowering the age of the president. However, even with the possibility of being the leader of the free world looming large, Josh still has plenty of time to decide whom he likes better--Beth or a new girl. Back matter allows readers to learn more about a handful of important political issues and informs them how to register to vote. Fans of the first book won't be disappointed in Josh/Larry's further escapades. Ilene Cooper

Not as good as the first
By M. G Navadomskis
Don't get me wrong. I love this book. This book is all the way up there with my other favorites, but, however, is not anywhere near the first book, The Gospel According to Larry. Anyway, I love this book. I would reccomend it to anyone. Just make sure you read the first one before this one, or else you will be really confused.

Incredible
By Kelcony
This is the most optimistic book I have ever read. It toys with not only the idea that people WANT to change the world, but that they CAN, without superpowers or magic or an appearance on Oprah. This was a Kid Runs For President book without the immaturity; it focused less on the age of the candidate than on the issues-real, true, important issues-he's pushing. Is this book realistic? No, of course not--but instead of faulting the author, why not fault ourselves? Why couldn't a group of people who were willing to fight for something get the rest of us to care? Not only does Janet Tashjian provide real solutions to problems--exaggerated and stretched, but on the right track--but she also introduces the novel idea of the Critical Patriot: the person who sees the flaws of the country but doesn't retreat into cynical commentary. The person who actually loves this country with its flaws AND IS WILLING TO MAKE IT BETTER. Her realistic portrayal--using actual candidates, events, issues, and facts--makes it all the more relevant to us. I think that all teens should read this book, just as all teens should register to vote when they're old enough. Josh/Larry is the symbolic epitome of what teens COULD be--not necessarily candidates but activists, working to make America and the world a better place. This book takes a stand--so should we.

...annoying
By Elizabeth Kyten
I loved The Gospel According to Larry because it was fresh and full of, if not new ideas, at least not trite ones. This book, however, is exactly the opposite. It is just basically a giant rant on the political system that is completely rammed down the reader's throat. Don't get me wrong; I think that the political system is flawed in many ways. But this book didn't present any actual solutions. Instead, it ragged on about problem after problem with the system, but rather than hearing about what made Larry's solutions better, the reader only heard Larry nailing the system. There were also many, many implausible events...the twenty-eighth amendment that never would have gotten passed, the huge amounts of the vote that Larry never would have gotten, and, honestly, the very premise that the book is based on. I am sorry, but the President of the United States is, in fact, the leader of the free world. An eighteen-year-old with no political experience whatsoever is not someone that I, at least, would trust leading my nation and the world.

So, basically, this book has some great ideas, but ultimately it is a giant political rant that brings up problems without mentioning any ways of how to solve them. It still has some of the fun that was so obvious in Gospel...mom's spirit at Bloomingdale's and the influence of Thoreau, for instance. The toilet paper stuck on the President's shoe was beautiful. But the preachy nature of the book and the implausibilities made it really annoying for me.

Also, come on...Janine??? What!!!

Hark! The Herald Angel Screamed: An Augusta Goodnight Mystery (with Heavenly Recipes) (Augusta Goodnight Mysteries), by Mignon F. Ballard

It’s Christmastime in the seemingly tranquil town of Stone’s Throw, South Carolina, but amid all the caroling, cookies, and cheer, a murderer casts a not-so-jolly pall on the holiday season.

Augusta Goodnight, guardian angel, sometime sleuth, and welcome boarder with longtime resident Lucy Nan Pilgrim, comes to the aid of her friends when, as Lucy Nan is searching for the perfect Christmas tree on her grandmother’s abandoned estate, a mysterious stranger plummets to his death from the mansion’s balcony. Lucy Nan can’t shake off childhood stories of the ghost of a girl who fell from the same spot long ago---has the ghost come back to haunt the living, or is there an all-too-human murderer at work?

Mysterious events are soon heating up faster than spiced punch left on the burner, and it will take Augusta’s help, not to mention some celestial Southern cooking, for peace to be restored and Christmas lights to shine once again in the little town of Stone’s Throw.

From Publishers Weekly
At the start of Ballard's sweet seventh mystery to feature Lucy Nan Pilgrim and her guardian angel, Augusta Goodnight (after 2006's The Angel and the Jabberwocky Murders), the folks of Stone's Throw, S.C., are preparing for Christmas when Dexter Clark, a not very nice man with a criminal record, falls to his death from a balcony at Willowbrook, Lucy Nan's grandmother's plantation home. Then someone drugs Idonia Mae Culpepper, who'd begun dating town newcomer Melrose DuBois, and steals a locket DuBois had given her. Later, Opal Henshaw, DuBois's landlady, breaks her neck in a fall from a church balcony. Might Opal have known too much about the locket's provenance? Could Melrose be a thief and a killer? Augusta as always makes a delightful earthbound angel in a Southern cozy fragrant with holiday spices and, yes, a selection of enticing recipes. (Nov.)

Hark! The Snoopy Angel Sings...
By Mimbelina
Glory to the newborn King! Peace on earth and mercy mild...

It's the Christmas season in Stone's Throw, South Carolina, but peace on earth is not on the nativity program this year. Fear and anxiety have taken over the town once again after the death of a stranger out at the long-abandoned ancestral home of Lucy Nan Pilgrim. Lucy, along with her friends, is puzzled by the man's seemingly accidental fall from the empty house's balcony and soon becomes frightened when his death is tied to a mysterious locket, old ghost stories and family secrets that extend far beyond their town's little borders. Will there be broken hearts and broken lives under this year's Christmas tree or can the Thursdays (who really meet on Mondays) solve the mystery before one of their own is hurt? Alone, they may not have a chance, but with the heavenly help of Lucy's guardian angel, Augusta Goodnight, they just might!

Mignon Ballard brings Southern coziness and warmth to the table once again in this installment of her charming Augusta Goodnight series. With its sassy humor and yummy-sounding recipes, this book was a delight! Settling Augusta with Lucy in Stone's Throw has allowed Ballard to develop a cast of characters whose personalities are now well-established, allowing the reader to feel a deeper connection to the series that wasn't present in the earlier books. The ongoing plots threaded throughout the past few books - including Lucy's romance with quirky Ben - are also a nice addition, providing additional depth to the book. Though this means that Augusta takes a secondary role in the book, I've always felt that this was a better place for her than in the forefront. All in all, a nice cozy read.

charming amateur sleuth urban fantasy
By A Customer
Everyone's favorite Guardian Angel Augusta Goodnight is still staying with Lucy Nan Pilgrim in the small town of Stone's Throw, South Carolina. It is the Christmas season; Augusta's favorite time of the year. She, Lucy and their friend Ellis seek the right tree for their church fellowship. They are looking on the grounds of Willowbrook, owned by Lucy's cousin, when they find a dead man on the porch below the mansion's balcony; the guard rail is broken.

While everyone tries to identify the John Doe, they are also happy for their friend Idonia who avoided love for years, but is involved with newcomer Melrose DuBois, who gave her a locket as a sign of his affection. When Lucy Nan and Ellis visit the caretakers of Willowbrook, the Tanseys, they see a picture of the couple's dead daughter wearing the same locket that Melrose gave to Idonia. The dead man is identified as Dexter Clark, the son in law of the Tansy's' dead daughter. Dexter's Aunt Opal Henshawe is also killed; Lucy Nan and Ellis know the events are obviously related even Melrose's disappearance. However, what that connection is remains mysteriously unknown as they seek to identify a killer without becoming the next victims.

Living up to her surname Augusta is the personification of goodness as she is able to make those in her circle feel better about themselves. While she cannot directly help find the culprit, Augusta assists Lucy, Nan, and Ellis on the quest. They each have an inner strength so when they team up, they can move mountains. Mignon F. Ballard is a wonderful storyteller who enchants her audience with this charming amateur sleuth urban fantasy.
