The usually quite conventional life of Farberville bookstore owner Claire Malloy embraces enough zany characters and situations in her 10th adventure (following Tickled to Death) to put readers in mind of Sheriff Arly Hanks's Maggody, the domain of Hess's other mystery series. Painter Zeno Gorgias, who has recently moved to the small Arkansas town's historic neighborhood, is staging performance pieces, starring a nearly naked young woman with a rubber snake, on his front lawn. Not only are Claire's hyperbolic teenage daughter and her friend involved, but Claire's policeman lover has his hands full with crowd control. Zeno's estranged wife arrives and threatens to have him institutionalized for incompetence; she is found murdered, her body recovered from charred ashes of Zeno's house after it?and half a million dollars' worth of his paintings?are burned. Suspects include the painter, his young, nubile "star," a couple from a local Bible college and a neighbor trying to sell his house. Another murder complicates Claire's efforts to understand motives as, in true small-town fashion, she pokes into everyone's business and manages, through some adroit footwork, to bring a murderer to his knees. Nearing her 40th birthday in this neatly plotted tale, Claire seems slightly more sardonic than in the past, but no less energetic.

Wonderful as Always

I love Joan Hess! No matter if she is writing the Maggody series or the Claire Mailloy series, I enjoy how she creates characters we all know - or wish we knew in our daily lives. I think I have read all she has written now, and I look forward to many years of Claire Malloy and Maggody!

Miss Emily and her basset hounds, Nick and Nora, have gotten Claire into trouble before (Roll Over and Play Dead and Dear Miss Demeanor) and are not totally innocent bystanders when it happens again. Claire, daughter Caron, and Caron's chum Inez comprise the trio which manages to run amuck on Willow Street--to the expressed displeasure of Lieutenant Peter Rosen. Peter, an employee of the local homicide division of the police department, is Claire's ardent lover and friend. In the past he has made many vehement objections to her forays into the areas of his expertise and, on occasion, has had her arrested to keep her from the fray. This time a famous painter, a nearly-naked neighbor, a writer, promoter, lawyer, two missionaries, and a soon-to-be-dead-wife all contrive to upset the tea party and give Peter ample reason to complain. If you, too, want to discover why the fire department arrives, what makes Miss Parchester say, "Could it be related in some way to the bears I saw in my backyard?", and who kills the second victim, you will have to read the latest and very funny Joan Hess mystery starring Claire Malloy--Busy Bodies.

Reading Joan Hess is like visiting with an old friend, and BUSY BODIES is one of her best outings in the Claire Malloy series. Nick and Nora are a hoot, as is the very well-constructed and highly entertaining plot. I wish this title was in print because everyone should have their own copy!

Brilliant From Start to Finish!

Maybe John Gavin Shot His Puppy

Sam Staggs has created a franchise telling the stories of the making of classic motion pictures. Behind the Movie - complete with tragedy, triumph, sex-capades and substance abuse. I greatly enjoyed Stagg's first three offerings (on All About Eve, Sunset Boulevard and A Streetcar Named Desire) in part because he treated these fine movies as classics without becoming too precious or too snobby about the whole thing. He writes as an intelligent movie fan for other intelligent fans who aren't above sharing a juicy bit of gossip.

This latest outing - the story of the 1959 version of Imitation of Life - finds Mr Staggs having misplaced his sense of humor. Early on Staggs makes it clear that Imitation is a movie that changed his life and his analysis proceeds from there. Like his two earlier books Staggs provides plenty of backstage gossip about the stars and fascinating details about the making of the movie itself. When Staggs sticks to the story behind the story and writes like a fan telling another fan about their favorite movie of all time this is an entertaining book. But this outing just isn't as much fun for several reasons.

First, Staggs takes this movie way too seriously. I'm all for reclaiming popular art as art. I'm also not in the least snobby about the emotional impact even the lowest of art can have on the viewer. But making a case for Imitation as one of the best movies ever made? There you're on your own, Sam. Especially when he has to go through such contortions to explain away the "blonde half" of the movie starring Lana Turner and Sandra Dee. This would be the part of the movie so beloved by fans of camp - until you've seen Lana "acting" like someone "acting" you just haven't lived - and it's entertaining in its way. It is, however, melodrama, no matter how much Staggs dislikes the word. Melodrama is all about heightened emotions, and what's wrong with that? But whenever Stagg tries to convince the reader that Douglas Sirk was achieving something brilliant by having a weak actress playing another weak actress he lost me. No, Sirk was doing the best he could with the actress he had. This wasn't all part of some cunning plan.

Second, Staggs can't seem to keep his mind on the topic at hand. If Staggs goes easy on Lana, not that I mind, he's downright vicious to John Gavin. I'm not a big fan of John Gavin, I wouldn't even call him an actor if I could think of another word for someone who appears in movies and recites his lines accurately but he's far from the worst thing ever to hit the cinema. Staggs' enmity for Gavin goes beyond his limited thespian skills and seems to have something to do with the fact that Gavin didn't like to do shirtless scenes. Staggs attributes this reluctance to Gavin's political beliefs instead of the more believable idea that Gavin was insecure about his acting and didn't want to be sold as a slab of beefcake. Despite the fact that several interviewees declare John Gavin to be a nice man Staggs isn't having any of it. You'd think Staggs would have a little fun with the man who nearly replaced Sean Connery in Diamonds are Forever (the first American James Bond!) but, no.

The only things that piss Staggs off more than John Gavin are the Catholic Church, Condeleeza Rice and George W. Bush. Again, I have no quarrel with this beyond the fact that these three have nothing to do with the movie in question. I do not know the Catholic Church official opinion on Imitation of Life. Nor do I know whether Condie or George have ever seen this movie, whether they like it or not, or where they stand on who stabbed Johnny Stompanato. And since Staggs doesn't see fit to share any of this with the reader I don't know why any of them make appearances. He also doesn't bother to place the movie in the political context of its own time so these current asides are doubly weird. These venomous drive-by remarks only serve to jar the reader out of the narrative and, ultimately, to date this book.

Third, Staggs is so partisan that he fails to see the virtues of the 1934 film version of the 1959 version. In the earlier film, the main characters are business partners; in the remake, Annie Johnson doesn't help create a business, she's the maid to a self-absorbed actress. In 1934, an African-American actress plays a young woman who "passes for white." In the 1959 version, a white actresses passes for white. Which sounds more ground breaking to you?

Finally, Staggs is so convinced of the greatness of the 1959 version and Douglas Sirk in general that he doesn't bother to make a convincing case for either. They're both great, and if you don't get it Staggs doesn't want to know you. That and the endless, pointless axe grinding (what does he have against poor Celeste Holm and Claudette Colbert?) makes this a disappointment.

Fascinating but upsetting

This book is unusual in that the author seems to have uncovered every tidbit, good or bad, interesting or pointless, about the 1959 film version of "Imitation of Life." Sam Staggs was apparently born to write this type of book by virtue of the staggering minutiae that he has gathered. Yes, it is fact-filled (mostly) and fascinating, but it is also catty and hateful, all at the same time. He has nothing but love for both Juanita Moore (who played faithful maid, Annie Moore) and Susan Kohner (who played her daughter, Sarah Jane), as he was able to interview both of them and get a unique window on this Douglas Sirk-directed tearfest--and about everyone involved in it. It is perhaps because these two lovely women were willing to give him all the information he wanted that he praised them to the heavens in the book. But others were not treated so kindly. Staggs was particularly cruel to John Gavin and goes into the man's politics and other pointless odds and ends that have nothing to do with his relatively solid acting career in Hollywood, despite what Staggs thinks of his talent.

At times the book feels like it is taking you on a second-by-second journey of the film, covering the dialogue, what was going on in the stars' lives, all the backstage drama, all the creative choices, and more. But after a while, it got tiring. There were simply too many tiny details and unnecessary quotes for readers to care. But perhaps more importantly, Staggs seemed to have a vendetta against Republicans and apparently anyone else who does not think or feel or believe as he does about certain issues. None of that had a place in this book. He could have easily stripped the text of about 50-75 pages of unnecessary banter and ranting and raving and embellishing and just gotten on with it.

There is no question that "Imitation of Life" is a unique film and its impact at the time, and since, cannot be underrated. It's great that someone has taken the time to unearth interesting tidbits about everything associated with this movie, but it is doubtful as to whether every single one of them should have been included in this book.

If the author would focus more on his subject and keep himself and his political commentary and judgment calls to himself, his books would be that much more pleasurable to read. Until he does, I can only suggest this as an oddity that may appeal to hardcore of fans of this film or of Lana Turner.

Defeat is a valuable lesson taught by Mike Horn

I found this to be a book which drew me in and allowed me to see what he saw and feel the elation and the despondency. That a person could walk so far on foot in such extreme conditions is amazing. The stupidity of bureaucracy at times seem more likley to end Mike Horn's adverture than any polar bear.

I also took some valuable lessons from Mike Horn's story and his attitude towards overcoming challenges and achieving goals. One of my favourites is "...By extending my stride by 4 inches...my journey would be covered a month and a half sooner." Imagine how many times he took another "4 inches in 12,000 miles!

A timeless journey

This book details explorer Mike Horn's 2 year journey, all 12,000 miles of it, along the Arctic circle, in incredibly harsh conditions. I found it enthralling, fascinating and inspiring.
How do you travel solo in temperatures often 50 degrees below where perhaps noone has ever been before? For weeks on end? In case you're interested, you'll find a few tips here. Not least of his accomplishments is dealing with Russian bureaucacy as he travelled through northern Siberia, encountering deserted gulags and a town with only a single inhabitant. Brushes with polar bears, wolves, it's all here.
If you like adventure books, this is one that grabbed me and which I could not put down. Foremost, you'll feel the spirit of this man coming through. This is not someone else describing this mindblowing odyssey, it's the person who actually lived it. It was a privilege for me, an outdoors lover and Appalachian Trail hiker, to be able to share his journey. A possibly life-altering book.

But it was supposed to be "New", and it arrived with a turned down corner and a thick permanent black marker dot on the edge...
This was a gift. Not really happy about the condition.

Excellent resource to coursework

Language Awareness was a required text in one of my classes, Rhetoric: Theory and Practice. It was used as supplemental material to the course topic. I read selections and then responded to them in writing using concepts that I'd learned from the class. The actual selections and exercises provide an excellent spring board for thought.

It was definitely a fun and useful addition to my learning process during the course.

A "Con"-Text Book for Writing Students and Teachers

I have used previous editions of this book in my college freshman composition courses. It does what very few composition texts or readers have ever done: the editors recognize that writing (and reading, of course) does not occur in isolation, but within the context of our own and our students' lives. Particularly, it aids students to think about their own writing in light of the cultural, psychological, and political issues of language, literacy, argumentation, and mass media. They include much about minority and non-Western cultures, plus articles and essays from both the present and the past. If you want to enhance your own or your students' understanding of the complex and exciting world of language, this is the book for you.

"It's the little things that change your life."

David Rosenfelt made his reputation as the author of the amusing Andy Carpenter mysteries. This time around, he has written a stand-alone thriller, "Don't Tell a Soul." The protagonist is thirty-year old Tim Wallace, the owner of Wallace Industries, a small New Jersey construction company. One May afternoon, Tim and Maggie, who have been married for five months, go out on Tim's thirty-foot motorboat. Tragically, the boat suddenly explodes with Maggie on board. Tim miraculously survives but the police suspect him of orchestrating his wife's death. His life is about to become a nightmare.

Tim's nemesis is Detective Jonathon Novack, who is convinced that Maggie's death "was a cold-blooded murder." Tim willingly takes a lie-detector test and passes with flying colors. Even though Novack cannot find a credible motive for Tim wanting to harm the woman he adored, the detective stubbornly refuses to abandon his theory. To him, "this case would never get cold. He would work it whenever he could, probing it from every angle, until he could put away the [man] who literally blew his young wife out of the water."

"Don't Tell a Soul" is a page-turner that benefits from Rosenfelt's patented tongue-in-cheek humor. Tim is a low-key and appealing protagonist who decides to take matters into his own hands in order to clear his name. Novack is your typical hard-nosed cop who refuses to entertain the possibility that Tim may actually be telling the truth, even when the evidence points to Wallace's innocence. Unfortunately, the book's convoluted and far-fetched plot goes downhill as it reaches its melodramatic and formulaic conclusion. The inevitable confrontation between the good guys and the bad guys is neither believable nor suspenseful. Although Rosenfelt's novel lacks depth and the characters are strictly one-dimensional, it is entertaining enough for a day at the beach or to pass the time during a long airplane trip.

I Am Going To Tell Everyone

I am going to tell everyone. This is another winner from David Rosenfelt, who is definitely one of my favorite authors. I just finished DON'T TELL A SOUL, which I unabashedly read and finished despite the laundry and unmade beds. I am still unwinding from the tension, and I liked the characters. This is Rosenfelt's first (I believe) book out of the Andy Carpenter series. Hopefully, though, the author will not be let off the hook from his loyal readers who are anxiously awaiting another adventure from Andy Carpenter and his lovable friends, both canine and human.

Solid thriller

"Don’t Tell a Soul" by David Rosenfelt (2008) is a solid thriller about the bad luck of recently widowed Tim Wallace, who was the prime suspect in his wife’s death. A year later Tim’s friend’s drag him to their favorite pub for New Year’s Eve, where a drunk man confesses privately to an unreported murder of a young woman. This was assigned as supplemental reading in an American History class i took. I actually ended up reading the whole thing! Excerpts from various documents throughout history, such as the diary of Martha Washington for example. There are a lot of neat narratives in this book that give you the more humanistic side of history.

Very, very disappointing

I've been a long-time Scottoline fan, owning all of her books, most in First Edition hardback. I've corresponded personally with Lisa, and she's a charming and very nice person. I've really enjoyed spending time in the world of Bennie Rosato and her associates. It's very painful for me to say that I didn't like this book very much at all.

I understand the artistic urge to take an established character into new and uncharted territory. It keeps it fresh for the author as well as, hopefully, the reader. But as with any risk, there's always the chance of failure.

In general, I don't think much of the doppelganger device in literature and movies. It has been used successfully - and rarely - to illustrate issues of morality and the duality of human nature, but there's a reason the phrase "evil twin" has become such a clichéd joke in our lexicon.

I didn't care all that much for the previous book in which Bennie's twin sister was introduced - it seemed contrived - and this book takes the whole thing way over the top.

The Bennie Rosato of the series is a cool and self-controlled character, with plenty of sang froid to spare, a woman who knows what she wants and how to achieve it. The Bennie in this book is completely unglued, running around like a lunatic with her hair on fire. The pacing and structure of the book reflect this frenzy: my Advance Reader's Copy has 371 pages divided into 128 chapters. Do the math; that works out to 2.9 pages per chapter. This book reads more like a movie script than a novel, and suffers accordingly. There's no real sense of setting in any of the scenes, no inner dialogues to speak of, a pretty complete lack of the kind of narrative of which Scottoline has proven she's capable.

I found the idea that these two women could change places so easily and successfully, given their respective lives, completely unbelievable. The idea that Alice - the "evil twin" - could simply step in and run a successful law firm without any formal legal training was, to me, preposterous.

There were other problems: WAY too much of Mary Di Nunzio's parents, for example, minor "characters" good as comedic foils in previous books, but far too overexposed here. A visiting "Italian aunt" who seems to have psychic powers and serves as a Deus ex machina device. Other things, but I think you get the idea.

Lisa, I know you sometimes read the Amazon reviews. I'm sorry, but I have to call it like I see it.

A page-turner, but not necessarily in a good way.

It's definitely a page-turner, but only because I found myself wanting the story to resolve itself. It was just one thing after another, eventually making me feel like screaming "Get on with it already!" There were some moments when an interesting theme was posed about the concept of good and evil, but it didn't seem to follow through very clearly. It's a good book if you are looking for a suspense thriller. But that's really all of it.

It's funny, you can sell something for years before you notice that the author has been quietly making a powerful impact on people everywhere.

        I started with HERE BE DRAGONS and I have never looked back. Her trilogy of the decline of the Welsh kings ( DRAGON, FALLS THE SHADOW and THE RECKONING)is a holiday gift I give year after year, and I'm happy to say they have always been embraced and loved. From my 15 year old niece to my 70 year old mother and many ages in between, all readers are enchanted and transported to a land and an age gone forever. But Penman makes them live forever in our minds and hearts with fantastic, unforgettable characters and wonderful history. HERE BE DRAGONS is such a great title--medieval mapmakes would write those words across any part of the map that was unknown.. a wonderful metaphor for how little the Welsh and English knew of each other.

        SUNNE IN SPLENDOUR--Warning: This is not Shakespeare's Richard III. In this novel, Richard is a victim of circumstance and man vilified by the Tudors, but here presented as a decent and normal man, a man of conscience.
AND he is not a murderer. Yes, those princes did die, but not by Richard's hand.

        WHEN CHRIST AND HIS SAINTS SLEPT

Another wonderful title, for it refers to the 15 years of England's darkest time-the civil war between the cousins Queen Maud and King Steven. England was deserted, for Christ and his saints were sleeping. I had never even heard of these royals. Queen Maud was the legitimate heir to the throne, but a woman, and there fore not fit to rule. She is also the mother of Henry, who later married Eleanor of Aquitaine . Pretty heady stuff, more incredible men and women, another book to get totally lost in.

Although it has been years since all these books were first published, I can name 5 stores I have been in in the past 3 months that have one of these titles in the Staff Recommends section.

Fantastic!

I'll admit it-- I've got a little crush on Richard III. I found this book to be one of the best historical fiction novels about Richard III that I have ever read. I loved that it also covered the years before his brother Edward took the throne, and it put Cecily Neville, his mother, in a different light. If you are looking for a well written and fun novel about the time of the Cousins War, do yourself a favor and read The Sunne in Splendour!

Maybe a little too perfect?

Whether or not you like this book will depend in large part in where you stand on the person and character of Richard of York, Duke of Gloucester and by the Grace of God, King of England, (however briefly).

If you are an unswayable proponent of the "Black Theory" -- that is, that Shakespeare, More and Richard's other critics were correct, that Richard killed the Princes and a lot of other people as well -- you'd probably better move along. This isn't for you.

If you haven't been persuaded yet, or are in favor of the "White Theory" -- that Richard was a good man, slandered by history -- then this is right up your alley.

It begins shortly before the deaths of Richard's father, uncle, cousins and brother at Sandal Castle and follows the fortunes of Richard, his brothers -- the hapless and self-serving George, Duke of Clarence and the shining Edward IV, the Sunne in Splendour -- and the other major players in the War of the Roses through to Richard's own death on Bosworth Field.

My only complaint -- and it's minor -- is that perhaps Richard as presented here is just a little too perfect, a little too saintly. I've no doubt he was honorable and decent -- yes, I hold to the White Theory -- and I believe he was loyal to his brother, but he comes across as someone who really never made a misstep, and I find that hard to believe.

All the same, it's a vivid portrait of its time, and very readable. You're going to want to read more about the Lancasters and Yorks when you're done.
