Under the Persimmon Tree, by Suzanne Fisher Staples

Najmah, a young Afghan girl whose name means "star," suddenly finds herself alone when her father and older brother are conscripted by the Taliban and her mother and newborn brother are killed in an air raid. An American woman, Elaine, whose Islamic name is Nusrat, is also on her own. She waits out the war in Peshawar, Pakistan, teaching refugee children under the persimmon tree in her garden while her Afghan doctor husband runs a clinic in Mazar-i-Sharif, Afghanistan. Najmah's father had always assured her that the stars would take care of her, just as Nusrat's husband had promised that they would tell Nusrat where he was and that he was safe. As the two look to the skies for answers, their fates entwine. Najmah, seeking refuge and hoping to find her father and brother, begins the perilous journey through the mountains to cross the border into Pakistan. And Nusrat's persimmon-tree school awaits Najmah's arrival. Together, they both seek their way home.

Known for her award-winning fiction set in South Asia, Suzanne Fisher Staples revisits that part of the world in this beautifully written, heartrending novel.

From School Library Journal
Grade 5-8 -When her father and brother are taken by the Taliban and her mother and baby brother are killed in a bombing raid during the Afghan war in October 2001, Najmah begins an arduous journey across the border to Peshawar, Pakistan. There, she meets up with an American woman, Nusrat, who has been conducting a school for refugee children while she waits for her husband, Faiz, who has returned to his native country to open medical clinics. For most of the story, the narration alternates between Najmah and Nusrat, allowing readers to see the war's effect on both of their lives. Only when they meet can they come to terms with their losses and move on. However, readers may feel unsatisfied with the ending. Having cared for the characters and been involved in their lives, they will want to know what happens to them. The use of an American allows the author to provide a clearer description of this unfamiliar world, but because Nusrat is a grown woman, her concerns may be of less interest to readers than those of Najmah, an enterprising and enormously courageous girl. Still, Staples brings the world of the refugee camp to life. Middle grade readers and the adults who teach them will welcome this fascinating glimpse into a world about which far too little has been written.-Kathleen Isaacs, formerly at Edmund Burke School, Washington, DC

From Booklist
*Starred Review* Gr. 7-10. In the mountains of northern Afghanistan after 9/11, Najmah watches in horror as the brutal Taliban kidnap her father and older brother. Will they ever return home? When her mother and baby brother die in an American air raid, she stops speaking, and, disguised as a boy, makes a perilous journey to a refugee camp in Pakistan. In a parallel narrative, Nusrat (her American name was Elaine), who converted to Islam when she met Faiz in New York, has set up a rough school for the refugees. She has had no news of Faiz, her husband, since he left to establish a clinic in the north. The two stories come together when Najmah and Nusrat meet in the camp, where they wait in anguish for news of the people they love. Staples weaves a lot of history and politics into her story (including information about the Taliban's suppression of women), and she includes a map, a glossary, and brief background notes to give even more context. But as with her Newbery Honor Book, Shabanu (1989), it's the personal story, not the history, that compels as it takes readers beyond the modern stereotypes of Muslims as fundamentalist fanatics. There are no sweet reunions, but there's hope in heartbreaking scenes of kindness and courage. For another book about post-9/11 Afghanistan, suggest Catherine Stine's Refugees (2004). Hazel Rochman

Under the Persimmon Tree
By The Careful Collector
Under the Persimmon Tree is a look at life in Afghanistan/Pakistan in the months immediately following September 11, 2001 through the eyes of two women. One is Najmah, a young Afghan girl left alone with her pregnant mother when her father and brother are conscripted by the Taliban. Her mother and the baby are killed during an air raid over their village a short time later. Now Najmah must travel to Peshwar to find her father and brother, and save their land.

The other is Nusrat, an American teacher, convert of Islam, who came to Pakistan when her Afghan husband Faiz decided to return to his home to help those suffering because of the war. Their stories converge when Najmah is brought to Nusrat's home in Peshwar, where she teaches a school for refugee children. Together they seek answers about their families, and their future.

This is a heartbreaking story, with a solid core of hope and strength. There is no happy ending, yet the future does not seem bleak. This timely and thought-provoking book is sure to be a contender for this year's Newbery Medal.

A gem of a story placed in an unlooked for setting
By Julie Hahnke
This story unfolds through two perspectives: a young girl in Afghanistan and an American woman living in Pakistan, in the months immediately following 9/11. Their seemingly contradictory lifestyles share surprising similarities in their experiences, suffering and hopes, as the story draws these two together.

The narrative weaves a delicate path, sensitive amidst the hardship and loss of the period, and provides a convincing and compelling explanation for each character's motives.

The story climaxes with an ending that is poignantly true to its characters, despite the reader's wishes, yet is satisfying in its own brutal realism.

Surely a Newbery contender!

An amazing testament to warfare and hardship
By LitPick Student Book Reviews
The year is 2001. Afghanistan is in the middle of a war between the Taliban and the US- backed Northern Alliance. The story follows two extraordinary people: Najmah and Nusrat. Najmah, whose name means "star," has lost almost all of her family to the fighting. Her only remaining relative is an uncle, whose sole aim is to steal the land that her father wanted her so much to protect. Najmah has no choice, but to accompany a family of travelers, as they are the only people, it seems, that care about her. The other main character is a woman by the name of Nusrat, an American living in Peshawar, Pakistan. Her school for refugee children under her Persimmon Tree keeps her mind away from her husband, who is working in northern Afghanistan as a doctor. Through a perilous journey, Najmah comes to live with Nusrat, and their lives entwine, as Najmah studies under the persimmon tree with other children who have seen more hardship in their young lives than Nusrat has seen in her entire lifetime.

This book was an amazing testament to those who must give up their lifestyle and possessions to warfare and hardship. "Under the Persimmon Tree" gives a face to all those who surrender all individuality to the western media, and are just masses of people in their eyes. I could not put the book down. I received the book on a Friday evening, and was done by Saturday morning. The way Suzanne Fisher Staples writes is both knowledgeable and empathetic. Her firsthand experience of the change of Afghanistan from a cultural center to a barren wasteland translates very clearly into the amazing and true-to-life storyline. Ms. Staples lived in Afghanistan from the time before the Soviet Invasion that changed the country forever to the time of the Taliban takeover. The ending leaves readers to wonder, and yet a sense of closure is within a close grasp. Under the Persimmon Tree is an essential to anyone with family members fighting in Afghanistan, who follow events there, or just want to learn about the war that seems to have disappeared out of our media spotlight.

From Publishers Weekly
As with 2006's My Big Fat Supernatural Wedding, several of the contributors to this lighthearted anthology of honeymoon-themed supernatural romance stories struggle with the short form. Marjorie M. Liu proves to be especially adept, providing the evocative and folkloric Where the Heart Lives. Fans of Chicago's supernatural detectives will be pleased by Jim Butcher's Heorot, where Harry Dresden tracks down a missing bride, and P.N. Elrod's Her Mother's Daughter, where Jack Fleming hunts for a vanished bridegroom. Things get more romantic with Kelley Armstrong's amusing Stalked, in which a stalk, chase and fight spice up a werewolf honeymoon, and Rachel Caine's charming Roman Holiday or Spq-arrrrr, featuring an undead pirate captain and his new bride who must face down a mutiny and an ancient Roman pirate. Some readers may be a little disappointed to find that despite the romance billing, most stories have far more hex than sex, but fans of the featured authors will be quite satisfied. (Jan.)

Werewolves Elena Michaels and Clayton Danvers are the protagonists of the first two novels in the Women of the Otherworld series, and appear as major characters in succeeding books.

I HAD TO GET RID OF THE MUTTKilling him would be easiest but, unfortunately, out of the question. If Elena found out, she'd be pissed. Ten years from now, I'd still be hearing about it: "Clay couldn't even get through our honeymoon without killing someone."She'd laugh when she said it ... in ten years. Right now, she'd be furious. She'd argue there were better ways to handle the situation. I disagreed. The mutt knew we were in town and that by sticking around, he was taking his life into his hands. If he'd skittered into the shadows and stayed out of our way, I'd have said, "Fuck it," and pretended not to notice. After all, it was my honeymoon.Even if he'd just stood his ground and refused to hide, Iwouldn't have made a big deal of it. Beaten the crap out of him, yes. Had to. The Law was the Law, and it stated that a non-Pack werewolf had to cede territory to a Pack one. Unfair, maybe, but if you let one mutt break the rules, the next thing you knew, they'd be camping out back at Stonehaven, knocking on the door, asking if they could use the facilities. But this mutt wasn't hiding or defending his territory. He was stalking Elena. He'd been following us all morning and was now sitting across the restaurant, gaze glued to her ass as she bent over the buffet table. When your mate is the only female werewolf, you get used to other wolves sniffing around. I'd spent the last eighteen years dealing with it or, more often, watching her deal with it. With Elena, interference is not appreciated. She can fight her own fights, and gets snippy if I rob her of the chance. But this was our honeymoon, and damned if I was going to let this mutt spoil it. He had to be dealt with before Elena realized he was stalking her. The question was how. When Elena walked back to the table, the mutt had the sense to busy himself gnawing on a sparerib."You okay?" she asked as she slid into her seat. "You've been quiet since the Arch."The mutt had started following us there."Just hungry. I'm fine now.""I should hope so. After three plates." She buttered her bread, then studied me. "Are you sure you're okay?""I don't know ... ." I shrugged and pretended to ease back in my chair, then lunged and snagged bacon from her plate. I folded it into my mouth. "Nope, still hungry."She brandished her fork. "Then get your own or--"I snatched another slice, too slow this time, and she stabbed the back of my hand. I yelped."I warned you," she laughed. The women at the next table stared in horror. Elena glanced their way. Five years ago, she would have blushed. Ten years ago, she would have found an excuse to leave. Today, she just murmured a rueful "whoops," and dug into her potatoes.I got another plate of food, avoiding the temptation to pass the mutt's table. He'd made a point of staying downwind outside and now sat partially obscured by a pillar, too far away for his scent to carry. For now, I'd let him think he was safe, undetected. When I came back, Elena said, "I think I have an outing idea for us. Someone behind me in line was talking about a state park. Could be fun." Her blue eyes glittered. "Of course, we shouldn't go during the day when there are people around.""Nope, we shouldn't." I speared a ham slab. "This afternoon, then?"She grinned. "Perfect."
WHEN YOU RESORT TO EVERYDAY ACTIVITIES ON YOUR honeymoon, you know it's not going well. Planning our second run in as many days meant Elena was bored and trying very hard not to let me know it.The first couple of days had been great. With two-year-old twins at home, the only time we normally got away was when our Alpha, Jeremy, sent us to track down a misbehaving mutt. Being on a mission doesn't mean we can't enjoy ourselves. There's nothing like celebrating a successful hunt with sex. Or working out the frustration of a failed hunt with sex. Or dulling that edge of pre-hunt excitement with sex.But there was also something to be said for skipping the whole "track, capture, and maim" part and being able to go straight to a hotel room, and lock the door. Still, we could stay in there for only so long before we got restless, and when we came out, we'd discovered a problem with our honeymoon destination: there wasn't a helluva lot to do.
BACK AT THE HOTEL, WE CALLED HOME AND talked to the kids. Or they listened as we talked, and had their answers interpreted by Jeremy. As much as we loved our daily call, we spent most of it braced for the inevitable "Momma? Daddy? Home?" or in Kate's case: "Momma! Daddy! Home!" Jeremy managed to spare us this time, stopping as soon as Logan asked "Momma where?" and bustling them off with his visiting girlfriend, Jaime.Next Jeremy and Elena would talk about the kids and discuss any new Pack or council business. Normally, I'd listen in and offer my opinion--whether they wanted it or not--but today I told Elena I was going downstairs to grab a map and a bottle of water, and took off.
I WAS REASONABLY SURE THE MUTT HADN'T FOLLOWED us from the restaurant, but wanted to scout to be absolutely certain. We'd walked to the Arch and then to the restaurant, meaning we'd had to walk back, which gave him the opportunity to follow. A cab would have solved that, but if I'd voluntarily offered to spend time trapped in a vehicle with a stranger, Elena would have been on the phone to Jeremy, panicked that my arm was reinfected and I was sliding into delirium. So I'd suggested we take the long route back. The mutt hadn't followed. Maybe he'd had second thoughts. If he'd heard the rumors about me, he'd know he could be setting himself up for along and painful death. But if he'd believed that, he should have hightailed it the moment he crossed our path. So while I hoped, I didn't trust.I grabbed a brochure on state parks, stuffed it into my back pocket, then headed out the front door to circle the hotel. I got five steps before his scent hit me. I stopped to retie my sneaker and snuck a look around. The bastard was right across the street. He sat on a bench facing the hotel, reading a newspaper. Cocky? Or just too young and inexperienced to know I could smell him from here?I straightened and shielded my eyes, as if scanning the storefronts. When I turned his way, he lifted the paper to hide his face, but slowly. Cocky. Shit.Normally, I'm happy to show a cocky young mutt how I earned my reputation. At that age, one good thrashing is all it takes. But damn it, this was my honeymoon.I crossed the road and headed into the first alley.
THERE WERE TWO WAYS THE MUTT COULD PLAY this, depending on why he was stalking Elena. It could be his misguided way of challenging me. Stupid--any wolf knew his mate wouldn't lift her tail for the first younger male who sauntered her way. Only a human would fly into a jealous rage and call a man out for it. But if challenging me was his goal, he'd follow me into the alley.Or he might really be after Elena. He wouldn't be the first mutt to think she might not object to a new mate.I walked far enough into the alley to disappear, then crept back along the wall, lost in its shadow, stopping when I could see the hotel door. After a few minutes, a car horn blasted and a figure darted through the heavy traffic. It was the mutt, heading straight for the hotel.I circled around the block, then came in the hotel side entrance, beside the check-in desk. I stopped there, partially hidden by a huge fake plant. The stink of the plastic fern overpowered everything else.I peered through the fronds. There he was, hovering at the other end of the desk, sizing up the staff. Hoping to get our room number? I stepped out. Just as he turned, a pale blond ponytail bounced past on the other side of the lobby. Elena.I turned away from the mutt before he realized I'd made him. I opened my mouth to hail Elena, then stopped. If she saw me, she'd head over here. Better for her to keep walking and I'd catch up outside the front doors--Shit. He'd walked in the front doors. His scent would still linger there, and Elena had a better sense of smell than any werewolf I knew. I started walking fast to cut her off. She caught sight of the brochure rack and veered that way."Elena!"I yanked the park guide from my back pocket and waved it. I moved to the left, blocking her view of the mutt. She couldn't smell him from here, but she was in charge of the Pack's mutt dossiers and might recognize him."Got the maps," I said. "I was looking for water. I can't find a damn machine--"She directed my attention to the gift shop."Shit. Okay, let's grab one and go."Out of the corner of my eye, I saw the mutt watching us. Elena's gaze traveled across the lobby, as if sensing something. I took her elbow and wheeled her toward the gift shop. She peeled my fingers from her arm. "I'm looking--""The gift shop's behind you.""Where I just pointed. No kidding. I'm looking for the parkinggarage exit. I was going to say we can get a drink on the way. It's too expensive here.""Good. I mean, right. The stairs are back there, by the elevators."She nodded and let me lead the way.
THE PARK WASN'T BUSY, SO AVOIDING HUMANS WAS easy. That too...

An eclectic mix of urban fantasy and paranormal romance tales that explore the unusual side of romance
By Kelley Hartsell
Courtesy of CK2S Kwips and Kritiques

Clay and Elena are on their honeymoon when Clay realizes they are being Stalked (by Kelley Armstrong) by a non-pack werewolf out to claim Elena for his own. Hunting the mutt may be exactly what this couple needs to liven up their honeymoon which has been rather *gasp* boring.

Stalked is an excellent introduction to the Women of the Otherworld series by Kelley Armstrong for people new to that world. It is also a great interlude for fans of the series to revisit some old favorite characters. The romance between Elena and Clay is very strong, if demonstrated in a different way. I felt their emotions as neither one wanted to admit they weren't enjoying themselves and even more strongly when the perfect opportunity for excitement presents itself.

In Heorot by Jim Butcher, Harry Dresden is called upon to help rescue a young bride from a hideous monster so she can still make it to her honeymoon on time. With a little help from Marcone's house wizard, Gard, Harry will enter the bowels of the city and discover there's more to Gard than he ever expected.

Heorot is a thoroughly enjoyable venture into Dresden's life once more. He is reluctant to get involved in the mystery of the missing girl but at the same time knows he is needed if she has any hope of survival. Gard turns out to be a fascinating woman when her history is revealed to us. While her story may not have as much of an impact on readers new to the series, long time fans will love the revelation. Ancient legends also come into play in Heorot when we find out what happened to the young bride.

In Roman Holiday, or SPQ-arrrrrr by Rachel Caine, we meet again with the formerly cursed pirate, Captain Liam Lockhart, as he's about to set sail for his honeymoon with Cecilia, the woman who broke his curse. However, other cursed captains have heard about Liam's good fortune and led by Roman, Salvius, and they want Cecilia so she can break their curses as well and will do whatever it takes to get her.

Roman Holiday, or SPQ-arrrrrr is the continuation of Caine's contribution to My Supernatural Wedding, the prequel to this book. As such, while everyone is likely to enjoy the tale, people who have not read the first story will not have as much of an emotional investment in this story. This is a lively adventure and I loved hearing about Liam's former curse and those cast on other sea bound souls stuck forever sailing the vast ocean. Liam and Cecilia's love story is wonderfully done for the length of the tale.

Vampire PI Jack Fleming takes us back to 1930s Chicago where he is hired to help a mobster daughter, Dorothy, track down her husband who went missing immediately after the wedding ceremony. As he is cracking the case, Jack realizes Dorothy is truly Her Mother's Daughter (by PN Elrod).

Her Mother's Daughter was my first venture into PN Elrod's series. I enjoyed my visit and can see me trying a few full length books in the series to see how I enjoy those. I loved the fact the era covered in this story is one not often visited in the novels I read. The 30s were full of glitz and glamour, and danger with speakeasies and flappers and the mob running rampant. Elrod does a good job portraying the thoughts and behavior of people from that time period. I wasn't surprised by the resolution to the mystery. I was surprised to see just how much Dorothy is like her mother when we get a brief glimpse into her mother's history.

In Newlydeads, Detective Pete Caldecott and her friend Jack Winter are on a vacation when strange things begin happening. People are disappearing from the Paradise Palace Casino & Resort and it appears they may be human sacrifices to a terrifying monster.

Newlydeads was probably my least favorite story in the anthology. Not because it was bad, mind you, just because I was quite confused. This novella was a bit too ambitious for the length. With as much detail about the world and its rules as had to be squeezed in, the story was a little bit hard to follow and got lost occasionally in the information. I did like the ending and how everything was wrapped up. I just wish it had been a little simpler of a road to get there.

In Where the Heart Lives by Marjorie M Liu, we are given a glimpse into the world of Dirk & Steele before the agency ever existed. Young Lucy is hired by Miss Lindsay to keep house and while there she sees a strange image in the forest of a young woman needing help, leading up to the revelation of just who these people she is now living with are.

I love the Dirk & Steele series by Liu so I was very excited when I found out Where the Heart Lives tells the story of exactly how the Dirk & Steele agency began. There is not one but two lovely romances explored in the story. I felt myself more emotionally involved in the story of Henry and Mary than I was in Lucy and Barnabus's tale but both were beautifully done. And Miss Lindsay was a fascinating person as well, who I'd love to know more about.

In Cat Got Your Tongue? by Katie MacAlister, Raphael St. John and Joy are on their honeymoon in a castle haunted by three ghosts when one of them begs their assistance in cursing her husband eternally. However, as they try to figure out how to do that, they find all is not as it seems with these three ghosts. Nor is it with Raphael who receives the shock of his life when he and Joy discover something about him they never knew.

Cat Got Your Tongue? is the most humorous story in the collection. Katie MacAlister writes with all the same hilarity and romance that has made her a household name. Fans of her series will enjoy finally discovering the secrets of Raphael St. John so tightly guarded even he wasn't aware of them. The three ghosts in the tale add extra charm to the short story.

In Half of Being Married by Lilith Saintcrow, newlyweds Kat and Mitchell discover neither was exactly entirely truthful before the wedding. When their honeymoon finds them holed up in a small town overrun by a vampire nest, they discover a few secrets about each other like the fact Kat is a vampire hunter and Mitchell is a werewolf. With a couple like that you know adventure is the name of the game!

Half of Being Married reveals what can happen when the happy couple is not entirely truthful with one another. Kat and Mitchell were afraid of how the other would react if they knew the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth so kept their secrets close. Their mutual surprise to find one a werewolf and the other a vampire hunter is brilliantly done and adds a little extra punch to the story. As if fighting side by side to destroy a nest of deadly vampires wasn't already enough to deal with already. Having not read anything else by Saintcrow previously, Half of Being Married was a great introduction to this urban fantasy author.

This collection of stories is closed out by Ronda Thompson's Wulf in Groom's Clothing. Laura Wulf hates the outdoors while her husband Sam adores them. While on their honeymoon in a cabin in the forest, Laura has a close encounter with a wolf when her new husband is overcome by the family curse that has him howling at the full moon.

Wulf in Groom's Clothing by the late great Ronda Thompson brings the cursed Wulf family out of the annals of history and into modern times. It is also another comedic addition to the series. What do you get when you cross a man cursed to become a werewolf and hoping to break said curse with a young pampered princess who hates the outdoors and animals but is afraid to tell her nature-loving new groom? You get a delightful romance blended with a touch of humor that is sure to keep you turning pages. Seeing how Sam and Laura overcome their differences in a whirlwind romance won't disappoint.

My Big Fat Supernatural Honeymoon is an eclectic mix of urban fantasy and paranormal romance tales that explore the unusual side of romance. Whether you enjoy a rip roaring good time or a more serious story, you are bound to find a couple tales to enjoy here. I'd have to say my favorite story is Where the Heart Lives but I found quite a bit to love in every single installment in the collection.

Not as strong as its predecessor
By S. Harris
I purchased and devoured "My Big Fat Supernatural Wedding," so was incredibly eager to read this one as well. While I was glad to read another story about Harry Dresden in any form, I found most of the rest of the stories not really worth my time. The vast majority of them assume knowledge of long-standing series, which end up cheating these shorter contributions - meant to either fill in the gap or entice you to try the series - from any semblance of satisfaction.

Armstrong's uses the protagonists from the first two novels in the "Women of the Otherworld" series and delivers a story that's all action and no feeling. I enjoyed Butcher's Dresden story, but even for being as big of a fan as I am, I think it's probably the weakest Dresden story I've ever read. Caine wrote an enjoyable follow-up to her undead pirate story from "My Big Fat Supernatural Wedding." Elrod's vampire 30s detective was also a joy to read.

Then comes the troublesome second half. Kittredge creates an entirely new world, but the story itself gets lost in all the exposition and details she has to provide for Black London. I never warmed to Liu's story at all, a prequel of sorts to her Dirk & Steele series. This is my first introduction to Liu's writing, and I'm pretty sure it's safe to say her voice just is not my style. Same goes for Katie MacAlister. This is another prequel to yet another series, and while I can see it's supposed to be funny, it's not my brand of humor. My one new find in this anthology was Lilith Saintcrow. Her prose was vivid and evocative, and she wrote a tightly contained short without sacrificing characterization. But then the anthology ends on the shortest and probably most unsatisfying story of the bunch, by Ronda Thompson. It was clearly another of those where the humor - about a Carrie Bradshaw-type married to a woodsy man with a secret - just didn't work for me.

A real mixed bag. I'd only recommend it if you're already a fan of the majority of the authors, not if you're hoping to discover new ones.

3.5 A mixed effort, some of the stories were just too short to satisfy
By melindeeloo
These are mostly very short short stories and the ones that worked for me out of this collection were the ones where the authors gave little vignettes from their long running series. Which meant that because I already was familiar with the characters they were nice fill-ins. I think that Jim Butcher, P.N. Elrod and Katie MacAllister did the best job of telling their tales in the short space allotted, Armstrong, and Saintcrow's were okay, Lui and Thompson's were near misses. Kittredge's prequel was ambitious for the space but her characters and world have promise.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

*** Kelley Armstrong has her existing characters Clay and Elena on their honeymoon being stalked by a nonpack mutt, and if you know these two at all you know that they are going to relish having a hunt to break up the boredom of their idyllic vacation.

*** Jim Butcher manages to carve out a nice little tale from the rescue of a stolen bride employing a couple of his existing characters and using them and some Norse legends to flesh out Marcone's hired wizard Gard.

***Rachel Caine gives us part two of her pirate tale from My Big Fat Supernatural Wedding, here the formerly cursed pirate and his wench get more than they bargain for on their honeymoon cruise but are saved by an intriguing character, a beautiful but damned pirate at the end of the story.

*** P.N. Elrod's vampire detective tackles finding a missing bridegroom for a mafia princess-bride.

*** Caitlin Kittredge's contribution -- a `dectective' story set in a world where a dark magical world, "The Black" that lies at the fringe of ours --the only connection to the honeymoon theme was that the main characters stay in the honeymoon suite and fall into a mystery involving sacrifices and black magic.

*** Marjorie M. Liu gives a story that is supposed to be a prequel to her Dirk & Steele series. It is a very pre-pre-quel, the story of Lucy Steele awakening to the world of magic.

*** Katie MacAlister's tale is a nice little fill-in to her Dark One's series, and answers the question of what Raphael St. John really was -- because we all wondered.

*** Lilith Saintcrow steps away from the dark side on her honeymoon tale of a vampire hunter and a werewolf who both left the full disclosure until the honeymoon and make their discovery when they find they've landed in vampland for their honeymoon.

*** Ronda Thompson give us a decendent of her cursed historical Wulf's. Here we get a modern bridegroom who gets furry now that he's found his true love but hopes the honeymoon consumation will cure him. Unfortunately it's not that easy and his unsuspecting nature hating bride is about to get up close and personal with a wolf.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

While many of these stories were screaming for more space, I would recommend that you don't cross any of these authors off your list based on their work here. All have popular multibook series and all of us fans can't be wrong in our slavishly keeping them on our 'must buy' lists, so check out their longer works. With this collection of authors there is something for everyone from humorous romance, to darker suspense all with a touch of the paranormal or magic, I've included the first books in their series to help you on your hunt.

Butcher's Dresden Files Storm Front (The Dresden Files, Book 1)
Armstrong's Otherworld Bitten (Women of the Otherworld, Book 1)
Caine's Weather Wardens Ill Wind (Weather Warden, Book 1)
MacAllisters Dark Ones A Girl's Guide to Vampires
Saintcrow's Dante Valentine Working for the Devil
Elrod Vampire FilesBloodlist (Vampire Files, Book 1)
Liu's Dirk & Steele Tiger Eye (Dirk & Steele, Book 1)
Thompson's Wild Wulfs of London The Cursed One (Wild Wulfs of London)

I wish I could solve all of life's problems as easily as I solve at least half of the Crossword puzzles in this book. However, I am stumped by the Friday Saturday ( difficult ones), as I am stumped by thr mess humanity is in.

Unlike the futility of raging at this imperfect world, solving the puzzles helps me fall asleep at night.

From Publishers Weekly
The ex–Democratic National Committee chair and political super– fund-raiser lives up to his nickname Mad Dog in this boisterous memoir. McAuliffe is rabidly aggressive toward Republicans (whom he describes as "willing to lie and cheat any way they could"), savaging them on talk shows and facing them down in bristling social encounters. He relentlessly pursues donors, happy to wrestle alligators and sing karaoke for checks ("for $500,000 I didn't mind humiliating myself"). He golfs, dances and plays cards with his political masters Hillary and Bill Clinton ("the Babe Ruth of American presidents"), forever preening over the role his advice and prodigious fund-raising played in their success. But on the exchange of money for access implicit in his activities, he is blustery but evasive. McAuliffe has incisive comments on the Democrats' shortcomings, especially their faintheartedness in fighting Republicans. Though he champions the Democrats as the party of the little guy—contrasting their jeans-and-barbecue shindigs with "swank, hoity-toity" GOP fund-raising events —that stance is undercut by all the name-dropping ("Ben Affleck joined Robin, Marsha, Dorothy and me for a quick tour of the skeet range") and elbow rubbing with grungily dressed billionaires. McAuliffe's inflated self-regard may give more ammunition to Republican opponents than his partisan vitriol does to Democratic allies. Photos. (Feb. 1)

From Booklist
McAuliffe, who has been involved with Democratic campaigns for the past 25 years as fund-raiser, advisor, and chairman of the Democratic National Committee during President Bush's first term, offers an energetic, behind-the-scenes look at politics. He began his career as a fund-raiser with the Carter campaign in 1980 when he became famous for wrestling an alligator. McAuliffe has gone on to raise more than $1 billion for Democrats. As an entrepreneur and millionaire, McAuliffe might be assumed to have more in common with the Republicans. But he traces his bona fides back to his childhood and his family's long-standing interest in Democratic politics. Despite his love for Democrats, he lambastes his party for failing to fight harder when the 2000 presidential election popular vote--and arguably the electoral votes as well--favored Al Gore; the Kerry campaign's reluctance to challenge Bush's qualifications as commander in chief when he allegedly had not completed his National Guard duty obligations; and a host of other sins. McAuliffe's exuberance and insider status combine to make this a fascinating look at political campaigns. Vanessa Bush

A telling look inside of politics since Carter
By Alan Gabelman
If you like politics, this is a great story (especially if you're a Democrat). McCauliffe gives an inside view of politics, going back to the Carter years, that is priceless. He talks about the politicians as real people, not just who we see on TV and read about on our phones, including funny anecdotes that humanize larger-than-life people like Bill, Hillary and others. McCauliffe, the master fundraiser, also gets into the mechanics and realities of raising money for a political campaign, a national convention, a presidential library. . .the list goes on. The book is a bit old now - a lot has happened since its conclusion in 2006 - but still a great read. Maybe Terry McCauliffe will run for president someday.

Loved, loved, LOVED this book!
By Karlis Streips
I have to say first of all that I am a member of the Terry McAuliffe choir. I sing second tenor on the songs "Bill Clinton Was a Great President", "Rush Limbaugh is a Big, Fat Idiot" (with words by Al Franken), "The Republicans Stole the 2000 Election Like the Thieves They Are", "The Republicans Should Be So Ashamed of Themselves That They Should Shut Down Immediately", etc. That said, not everyone who conducts that particular choir writes with as much panache, elan and joie-de-vivre as this man does. This is a wonderfully, wonderfully written book about the down and dirty of politics, and Terry McAuliffe certainly does the down and dirty of politics just about as well as anyone. He was a close Friend of Bill and offers really touching portraits of President Clinton and also Hillary Clinton. You can hear him smacking his lips as he talks about the way in which he savages Republicans and how disappointed he was in the wooses who surrounded Jim Kerry and made him play nice when Bush and his Darth Vader vice president were playing as evil as they could possibly be. This is a top-of-the-line political book for anyone who is interested in party and presidential politics in the United States, and I recommend it with every bit of my being!

Every Page was FUN to Read - It doesn't get any BETTER - RUSH OUT to BUY IT!!!!
By Richard of Connecticut
Does a political book get any better than this one? I don't think so. This is one of the finest books on politics you can ever hope to read. It's entertaining and insightful on every subject it touches. This is coming from a reader who is usually on the other side of the political arena. McAuliffe's personality was absolutely captured in this book. His contagious commitment to his party, and the people he was loyal to is evident throughout every page.

Is the book honest; does it give the unvarnished truth about what happened during the times and events that McAuliffe is writing about? Of course not, nor would you expect it to. When you read this book, you are looking for an understanding of what it was like for the dominant financial fundraiser of the Democratic Party of his generation to do what he did. From that perspective, it just doesn't get any better than McAuliffe's book.

It is not a short book either. It is close to 400 pages done with a moderate size font, but in those pages, the man demonstrates a joy for life, and it's a life on a big scale. He knows the movers and the shakers, the real guys and the pretend guys. It's all here, and for the reader you get the inside scoop on life at the top of one of the two major political parties in our land.

Talk about bias though. McAuliffe does sometimes speak about history and events as though he's the only one who's got the story straight. He also tends to think of the Democrats as being pure as the driven snow, and the Republicans as though they are in bed with the devil. Only partisans live that nonsense.

The author has to be forgiven for his partisanship because he has so much invested in the GAME. You are not reading the book to learn about history. You are living this man's life in these 400 pages, and it feels very real. Some of the fabulous stories you will read in this book include:

· How's he's trying to get a couple of hundred grand out of a guy by inviting him to a party. He tells him Sammy Davis Jr. is coming and will be singing, even though Davis had been dead 10 years.

· He goes to a guy in California to get a million bucks and the guy brings his friend who is dressed like a bum. The bum takes out a wrinkled check, has holes in his t-shirt, and writes a check for a million also.

· The stories on Lew Wasserman, the man who ran Hollywood for decades are priceless. McAuliffe asks Wasserman how his desk could be absolutely clean, not a piece of paper on it. Wasserman tells him, "If I get a piece of paper here, I either throw it out or act on it. I don't let anything sit." What a priceless piece of advice to the rest of us.

· A fundraiser is brought to meet former Vice President Mondale in 1984. The fundraiser happens to be gay unbeknownst to Mondale. He tells the VP, there's something I need to tell you. "I've come out of the closet." After the man leaves, Mondale ask in a serious voice, "What was he doing in my closet."?

· The stories on Tip O'Neill are nothing short of spectacular. Tip tells McAuliffe about JFK and Tip doing a fundraiser. At the end of the evening JFK asks Tip how did we make out. Tip responds we got cash and checks. The future President comes back, "You take the checks, I'll take the cash."

· His stories on boar hunting are dead on accurate. I've done this, and the man knows what he is talking about.

· He's got a couple of tips about fundraising that you could never hope to learn unless someone passed them on to you. They include always accept a drink from a potential donor. It loosens every body up. Don't let anybody get drunk however, because they might not remember the amount they committed to. When doing a fundraiser always use a smaller room than you need. It gives off a more successful appearance.

When I read any book I am looking for that one thought that makes the whole book worthwhile. On page 200 I found that thought. President Clinton talks about what he believes in passionately.

"Don't let somebody bad-mouth you out of the game, and then sit on the sidelines and lay down. Don't let them score without trying to tackle them. If you're going to play, you ought to know going in what to expect...So half the time when you get hit upside the head, people don't necessarily believe it. What they're really interested in is: how are you going to respond? That's how they can get some guidance as to what sort of President you'd be, or senator, or congressman, or governor."

The second fabulous insight was a statement that President Clinton made about what he learned from Nelson Mandela about anger and hatred, when he asked Mandela, "....didn't you really hate those who had imprisoned you?"

Mandela responded, "Of course I did, for many years. They took the best years of my life. They abused me physically and mentally. I didn't get to see my children grow up. I hated them. Then one day when I was working in the quarry, hammering the rocks, I realized that they had already taken everything from me except my mind and my heart. Those they could not take without my permission. I decided not to give them away." Mandela then told Clinton, "Neither should you." P164

Read the book, it's a BLAST.

The Blueprint: How the New England Patriots Beat the System to Create the Last Great NFL Superpower, by Christopher Price

For years, the New England Patriots were a certifiable joke of a franchise. They were run on the cheap and were once the very example of how not to manage a team. They hired inept coaches---one of whom (Clive Rush) was nearly electrocuted when he grabbed a microphone at his introductory press conference. In 1968 their scouting director, Ed McKeever, suggested they draft a wide receiver . . . before someone in the organization realized the player had been dead for six months. They plucked ex-players out of the stands minutes before kickoff---Bob Gladieux was enjoying a beer at the game when he heard his name called over the P.A. (The Patriots had cut a player earlier that morning and found themselves short. Gladieux, who would go on to spend four years in the league as a running back, made the tackle on the opening kickoff.) And they played in a run-down stadium that was one of the worst venues in professional sports. There were brief moments of success, but on each occasion, front-office infighting would invariably cause the franchise to slide back down to the basement again.

But in the first four months of 2000, everything changed. The hiring of head coach Bill Belichick and Vice President of Player Personnel Scott Pioli and the drafting of quarterback Tom Brady turned the fortunes of the franchise around. And their nontraditional approach to acquiring personnel---remembering that it's not about collecting talent, it's about assembling a team---quickly led to three Super Bowl titles in four seasons. It's a feat that, in the salary cap era, with free agency, planned parity and balanced scheduling, is in many ways even more impressive than anything achieved by the past dynasties of Green Bay, Pittsburgh, Dallas, and San Francisco.

Along the way, Christopher Price has had a front-row seat for football history, chronicling the rise to power of the NFL's unlikeliest superpower. Price takes the reader inside the franchise to give him a dynamic portrait of a mighty organization at the height of its power. Readers are immersed in the locker room during the strange and tumultuous days of 2001 and 2003, when major personnel moves involving a pair of the most popular players in franchise history---Drew Bledsoe and Lawyer Milloy---threatened to rock their championship foundation to the core. Readers get an up-close look at the team that dominated the league on the way to a record-setting winning streak in 2004. And Price analyzes what went wrong when they fell short in 2005 and 2006, and how they plan to return to Super Bowl form in 2007.

The Blueprint will explore how the Patriots went from the dregs to a dynasty, becoming the gold standard for professional sports franchises everywhere. It will prompt sports fans (and those who study organizations) to acknowledge what many football insiders have believed for a long time: when it comes to building a successful system, the Patriots have the Blueprint.

From Publishers Weekly
Given the almost perverse ratio of fans and media attention on the one hand (massive) to the minuscule number of NFL games (a mere 16 per team in regular season, compared to 162 in baseball), the level of attention paid to each play, press conference or trade is astounding. So when Bill Belichick took over as coach of the famously inconsistent New England Patriots in 2000 and quickly turned them into what Boston Globe sportswriter Price terms the unlikeliest dynasty in the history of the NFL, the coach's low-key recipe for success was bound to be anatomized within an inch of its life. Fortunately, Price's account of the team's elegantly simple transformation from league laughingstock (his stories of their 1970s foibles are legion and hilarious, to nonfans at least) to Tom Brady powerhouse is a breeze to read; neither pumped full of steroidal sports hyperbole or weighed down by bloated play-by-play. From the soap opera that was the Bill Parcells era to the high drama of Drew Bledsoe's injury, when he unwittingly handed the quarterback crown to an untested Brady, this is a highly diverting read perfectly timed for the start of a new season for a team that, in Price's mind, has become the gold standard for the rest of the National Football League. From Booklist
Penned by a New Englander who's covered Boston sports for the past 10 years, this volume may run parochial for many readers. Still, it's hard to argue with the recent success of the Patriots, who have won three Super Bowls since 2002 and, but for a play-off loss to Indianapolis in January, would have been in it again this year. Price traces the Patriots' history, from its AFL days in the 1960s through the team's many losing seasons, as well as its changes of ownership and personnel, arriving in the '90s with the hiring of Bill Parcells as coach and the team purchase by Robert Kraft. The pieces truly fell into place with the hiring of coach Bill Belichick and the emergence of quarterback Tom Brady. It was Belichick's reliance on his linebacker corps, on some smart and versatile JAGs ("just average guys") to step in where needed, and on his young quarterback—not to mention very sophisticated defensive schemes—that made it all work. Football fans who can't seem to get enough of the game will enjoy this profile. Moores, Alan

Excellent Modern Day History of the New England Patriots
By C. Baker
This book lays out the reason the New England Patriots have been able to sustain a high level of excellence over the past seven years in an era of salary cap limitations that aggressively promotes parity. Despite this, the Patriots have appeared in four of the last seven Super Bowls, winning three of them. This year they posted an 18-0 record before being defeated in Super Bowl XLII 17-14 by the New York Giants in a rather poorly played game on the Patriot's part.

How do they do it?

First, Robert Kraft is no longer the meddling owner he was when Bill Parcels was the head coach. He lets the football people make the football decisions, especially on personnel.

Second, Bill Belichick is clearly one of the smartest coaches when it comes to strategy (Super Bowl XLII being an exception). But he too has learned from his mistakes as head coach of the Cleveland Browns. He treats his players a little differently and has more control over personnel, even though his media skills still lack something to be desired.

Third, Belichick doesn't try to do everything. It's impossible. While he has final say over all football related matters he relies heavily on Scott Piloli, head of player personnel. Piloli has been with Belichick for a long time and their scouting department turns up high character players who fit Belichick's system. Their drafts under Belichick have been very good, for the most part, which is critical for building a team.

Fourth, Belichick mostly lets the players police themselves. The veterans on the team know what it takes to win championships and the team first philosophy that permeates the organization is not just lip service. The veteran players work to make sure everyone stays on this course.

Fifth, the Patriots adroitly manage the salary cap. Unlike a lot of teams they don't sell out by signing players to huge contracts and guaranteed money to make a one time championship run. Doing this can hamstring a team for years as players with large signing bonuses count against the salary cap for years, even if they are no longer productive or even on the team. Further, there is no sentimentality to their decisions. They cut Lawyer Malloy, a mainstay at strong safety for several years and a favorite of fans, players, and coaches alike. Because of a contract dispute where they felt the amount of money he wanted was not in the long-term interests of team, they cut him.

And finally they have Tom Brady. Successful teams must have a decent quarterback at the helm. Brady, a sixth round draft pick, has turned out to be one of the best quarterbacks of his generation. Having mostly a solid defense and Brady at the helm of the offense has been critical to the team's success.

Overall this book is reasonably well written and is an excellent modern day history of the New England Patrtiots franchise. The first part of the book deals with pre-Kraft Patriots history. It was necessary to set up the rest of the book, but there is nothing particularly new here. The rest of the book does a good job of laying out just why the Patriots have been successful over the past seven years.

That said this book needed a better copy editor. There are many places where conjunctions are missing, which is annoying to the reader. And in once chapter a quote by Belichick is repeated within a few paragraphs of each other. At times the author tells us something and then basically repeats the same information in different words, which is what happened with the redundant quote.

Nevertheless, this is a book that Patriots fans and football fans in general, should greatly enjoy.

Worth the read!
By Jase3gt
When I read the first chapter of this book, I thought that the book was going to be a watered down version of "Patriot Reign" by Michael Holly.
But the second chapter goes all the way back to the infamous beginnings of the New England Football team. It mentions the Boston Braves who later became the Washington Redskins. It talks about the deplorable conditions that the teams had to deal with in the early days when they didn't have a stadium and then when they got Schaefer Stadium. It describes all the interesting characters that were on the team throughout the years.
The rest of the book goes on to cover the modern day Pats and their rise to the team they are now. Whether or not you like that Pats or Bill Belichick, it talks about his career and how he's changed the way he's coached and even the things he's changed within the NFL, such as the way they choose defensive players and such, especially under the salary cap.
It does bog down a little bit but it's still interesting and was a pretty quick read. I did like this book a lot more than Patriot Reign.

A Good, not great, look into the current success of the Patriots.
By Money Honey
The Blueprint offers a complete breakdown of the New England Patriots' history and the foundation for the team's current dominance. The book is well written and is a good foundation for new fans, but doesn't offer much additional insights into the franchise beyond the well known facts. The writer's style is a bit dry. For a more entertaining and deeper look into the New England Organization, Michael Holley's "Patriot Reign" was far more insightful and a much more entertaining read. For a newer fan this book is great; for a die hard, lifetime fan, there isn't much here you didn't already know. On a personal note, a big pet peeve of mine is insufficient editing, and I found numorous spelling errors, and repeatitive thoughts through out the book, which is a bit distracting.
