From Publishers Weekly
Esposito, best known for her authentic and inspired take on rustic Italian cooking, has taken a crack at the ubiquitous quick/easy genre in her latest book, offering 75 recipes that focus on five main ingredients. Immediately appealing, Esposito's warm tone echoes throughout the book, offering quick trips down memory lane. At a time when most families are tightening their belts, an array of effortless, five-ingredient recipes is most welcome, especially since most are to be served family style. (However, many recipes have a high calorie count that might turn off health-conscious cooks.) For the most part, Esposito sticks to old Italian favorites—spaghetti carbonara, fried shrimp, and panna cotta. The salad and antipasto chapters are superb, with knockouts like roasted asparagus and carrot salad and spicy soppressata tartlets. But considering that six of the eight pasta dishes contain no vegetables, and decadent dishes like pasta bundles with taleggio cheese and pears call not only for butter but two types of cheese, readers may get frustrated at having to flip to the vegetables chapter to find them. I found this book at my local library and since we love Italian food I decided to try out some of the recipes. With only five ingredients and simple instructions I made several amazing tasting dishes. The barolo pork roast was a big hit as was the Gelato pie. So easy and so good that I had to have my own copy. Finding it used on Amazon was great. The book is really in very good condition and the price was more than acceptable. I would purchase from this seller again.

Italian Cusine With Only Five Ingredients!
By tmtrvlr
I only enjoy cooking a meal if it is easy enough that I can enjoy the process and the end results. Ciao Italia Five-Ingredient Favorites has recipes for hearty Italian cusine that are inexpensive and easy to prepare. She begins the cookbook with a wonderful introduction to the basic ingredients to keep on hand. Of course, five ingredients for the pantry, five for the refrigerator, and five for the freezer. Each recipe section begins with a clever introduction and five tips for that food type. For example, the Pasta section begins with her introduction, "Pasta Police", an amusing comment on incorporating pasta in your diet in a healthy way.

My first-to-try recipes include Zuppa di Paradiso (Paradise Soup), Cheesy Stuffed Meatballs, Coal Miners' - Style Spaghetti and Tortine di Gianduja e Banana (Chocolate, Hazelnut, and Banana Tartlets). Mmmm- Nutella is one of the ingredients!

As in my other cookbook reviews, I always consider the ingredients needed and whether I will be able to easily find them in my small-town area. There were a few cheeses that I am not familiar with, but even in the two small towns around here, there is a good cheese selection. I don't think I will have any problem finding them.

This is definitely a great gift for a bridal shower gift, Christmas gift, or an addition to your own cookbook collection. A great everyday book!

Ciao Italia Five-Ingredient Favorites
By Ellen P. Lafleche-christian
is a cookbook that focusses on quick and easy Italian recipes and is written by Mary Ann Esposito who is the host of public television's program Ciao Italia. She shows cooks how to turn just five quality ingredients into a delicious Italian dish.

The cookbook contains seventy five authentic Italian recipes including recipes for antipasto, soup, pasta, sauce, meat and poultry, fish, vegetables, salads, and sweets. She also details five seasonal five course meals. In keeping with the theme of five ingredients, each section contains five recipes.

This is a hardcover cookbook with a dustjacket. The paper used, is a high quality, heavy paper so the cookbook has a very expensive feel to it. Scattered throughout the cookbook are a number of gorgeous photographs of the recipes listed in the cookbook.

The recipes are very well written with step by step instructions so that even a novice cook should be able to follow them without a problem. The recipes are mouthwatering and will leave you feeling as though you've splurged at a fancy Italian restaurant without leaving your own home.

A few of my favorite must try recipes include Cheesy Stuffed Meatballs and Puffy Merringues. The Chocolate, Hazelnut and Banana Tartlets are high on my list of must tries too!

In Maitland's gripping new police procedural to feature DCI David Brock and Det. Sgt. Kathy Kolla (after 2004's The Verge Practice), something evil afflicts a group of artists and assorted hangers-on who live in London's Northcote Square. When six-year-old Tracey Rudd, the daughter of the circle's most famous artist, Gabriel Rudd, goes missing, it appears she's the third girl to fall victim to a kidnapper. Soon two of the three girls are found, one dead and the other nearly so. As various members of this community are killed in horrible ways, Brock and Kolla dig through an intricate web of circumstances, which some readers may find too complex. Maitland, an architect who crafts his prose in accord with the dictum that God is in the details, brings the particular world he depicts unforgettably alive. No one who reads this haunting, unnerving work will ever again think about contemporary artists the same way. (Oct.)

The latest Brock and Kolla mystery finds the Scotland Yard partners looking into the kidnapping of a six-year-old girl. The case is made more difficult by the fact that the girl's father, Gabe Rudd, a renowned artist, is instantly unlikable; and by the fact that the girl's mother died several years ago, an apparent suicide. Rudd almost immediately turned her death into a controversial work of art, and now, barely hours after his daughter was taken, he is already talking about exploiting her disappearance, too. As usual, Maitland offers up a suspenseful story and a cast of engaging characters. A solid entry in this ever-enjoyable series. David Pitt

Review

“Gripping...Maitland brings the particular world he depicts unforgettably alive. No one who reads this haunting, unnerving work will ever again think about contemporary artists the same way.” ―Publishers Weekly on No Trace

“In what may be his best book yet, Maitland starkly contrasts the modern art worldview of life as art/art as life with the police attitude that life is not a game. Fans of British police procedurals by such authors as Jill McGown, Stuart MacBride, and Quentin Jardine will demand this.” ―Library Journal (starred review) on No Trace

"Art is meant to disturb."
By E. Bukowsky
Barry Maitland's "No Trace" is a haunting and powerful police procedural featuring Detective Chief Inspector David Brock and Detective Sergeant Kathy Kolla. Brock and Kolla are members of a Major Enquiry Team looking into the disappearance of three young girls: Aimee Prentice, Lee Hammond, and most recently, Tracey Rudd, the six-year-old daughter of Gabriel Rudd, a controversial contemporary artist. Rudd lives in Northcote Square, a London neighborhood known for its cutting-edge artists and art dealers.

Maitland does a masterful job of juggling an enormous cast of colorful characters. Betty Zielinski is an apparently disturbed woman who lives near Gabriel Rudd. Although she claims that she has pertinent information that could help the police, no one is willing to pay any heed to "Batty Betty," as she is known in the square. Len and Bev Nolan, Tracey's grandparents, despise Rudd, whom they blame for the suicide of his wife, Jane, who was also their daughter. Fergus Tait, Gabe's art dealer, is an opportunist who encourages Gabe to immediately transform his grief into a new work of art, as he did after his wife's death.

Weeks pass without any leads. Suddenly, a series of homicides raises the stakes for the investigators. It soon becomes apparent that a serial killer is loose in Northcote Square. Could these murders be related to the abduction of the three little girls? Brock has his hands full dealing with these high-profile cases, especially since his superiors are breathing down his neck and pressuring him for results. Maitland slowly builds up tension as Brock, Kathy, Detective Inspector Bren Gurney, and the rest of the team desperately look for leads.

"No Trace" is one of the most dark and complex thrillers of the year. It has crisp dialogue, sharp descriptive writing, excellent depiction of police procedure, and deliciously sardonic humor. Maitland touches on a number of compelling themes and develops them beautifully: the selfishness of great artists, the political jockeying for power among law enforcement agencies, and the price that dedicated detectives pay for their devotion to duty. The author skillfully demonstrates that some apparently normal human beings are so cruel and insensitive to the pain and suffering of others that they commit horrific acts with little or no remorse. The plot becomes more and more intricate until it culminates in a breathtakingly clever and surprising, if not entirely realistic, finale. Still, Maitland pulls it off, and "No Trace" is itself a minor work of art.

superb British police procedural
By A Customer
In London someone abducts the six years old daughter of artist Gabriel Rudd from their home leaving NO TRACE at all of a struggle. Little Tracey is the apparent third victim of the kidnapper; of the first two girls, one is dead and on is barely alive.

Detective Chief Inspector David Brock and Detective Sergeant Kathy Kolla head the investigation into the serial kidnapper case, but emphasize the importance of concentrating on rescuing the child. They are both appalled by Gabriel's reaction. Known for his work the "Dead Puppies" that gruesomely depicts the suicide of his wife five years ago, the abduction inspires him to begin a project depicting Tracey's kidnapping as the center of his upcoming exhibition of his works. He becomes a suspect with the motive being to recapture his moment of fame while he obviously had opportunity and the no struggle hints of someone the girl knows, but the two cops also look at other individuals in this closed bohemian artistic society.

The strength of this superb British police procedural resides with the support cast as Barry Maitland vividly describes the artist community, who to the two cops seem offbeat especially the victim's father. Readers will be fascinated in a macabre way with Rudd's reactions as he sees his daughter's danger as an exploitation opportunity, which has the audience wondering if he is that unfeeling, the culprit, or the ultimate capitalist.

They talked about doing things, of course, these macho cousins and uncles of mine. But nothing happens. God did not reward the Muslims for waiting in patience while the Unbelievers picked them off one by one, did He? God helps she who helps herself, she who helps the Muslims. Someone has to take control, right? I've already decided that someone will be me.

Nadia is an excellent student, daughter, and sister, living in Damascus, Syria. Above all, she strives to walk the straight path and follow the laws of Islam. But she's confused by the world around her and how she fits into it. She's conflicted about her Westernized cousins, the internal struggles of her country, and the war raging in Iraq. When her cousin is arrested by Syrian authorities for speaking out―betrayed by someone in the family―Nadia finds herself drawn into the dark world of Islamic fundamentalism. And she's about to face the biggest decision of her life.

Grade 8 Up—In this believable depiction of the growth of religious zealotry, 17-year-old Nadia describes the period after her cousin's arrest by the Syrian secret police. Already committed to Islam, she moves toward fanaticism, actually seeking out an attractive man whom she hopes will help her to learn more about the revolutionary cause. Moderates in her family attempt to counter her extremism; this is not the kind of flirtation her mother expected of a teenage daughter, and the mother's quiet example of a different Muslim way is the most appealing part of this unsettling picture. Nadia's internal and external arguments provide a stark vision of how others see the U.S. Jolin effectively works in every negative impression, real or perceived, about America and its foreign policy. Beyond the usual stereotypes of American commercialism, there are comments on 9/11 and the war in Iraq, quotations from George Bush, and allegations of worldwide Jewish conspiracies. American readers may find that Nadia's change from an ambitious student to a suicide bomber comes a bit too quickly. But the author's Islamic studies and long residence in the Middle East help make this a convincing picture of life in present-day Damascus, and the suspense will keep readers engaged.—Kathleen Isaacs, Towson University, MD

From Booklist
Set in contemporary Damascus, Jolin's debut novel is a groundbreaking story of a Syrian teen drawn into Islamic Fundamentalism. Seventeen-year-old Nadia is surrounded by devout Muslim family members, but it's her cousin Fowzi who becomes a role model for her increasingly hard-line religious and political views. Then Fowzi is arrested for speaking out against the government, and Nadia's urgency to carry her beliefs into action leads to her recruitment in a radical group. When she is asked to become a suicide bomber, she agrees. Jolin's novel is certainly provocative, but at times the story reads like a docu-novel: carefully inserted historical and cultural facts occasionally interrupt the narrative, and the characters' religious and political debates sometimes seem purposefully calibrated to show as may viewpoints as possible. However, there are very few novels for young people that give such a comprehensive sense of a contemporary Muslim Arab teen's daily life and concerns. Writing with compassion and sensitivity, Jolin shows the volatile mix of vulnerabilities, passions, anger, fear, yearning, and devotion that pulls Nadia toward her shocking choices, which culminate in a heart-stopping ending. In framing Nadia's questions about faith, Jolin creates an essential starting place for teens to examine their own views about Western culture, the Middle East, the division of church and state, terrorism, and how fear and hate, faith and love affect everything. Cathryn Clinton's A Stone in My Hand (2002) and Naomi Shihab Nye's 19 Varieties of Gazelle (2002) will continue the discussion. Gillian Engberg

Curious how anyone could ever contemplate dedicating one's life to a cause? Try this great story with interesting characters.

I'm well into my 30's and really enjoyed this "young adult" book. I loved reading the story about contemporary life in Damascus, Syria, especially from the point-of-view of a young woman who has made a choice to wear hijab. (As someone who grew up Catholic, I didn't have a clue what making that decision means - or even that it _is_ such a decision.) The characters are all Syrian and have had very different experiences in life. That might seem odd since most of the characters are part of the same extended family, but it's actually very natural because of their differences in gender, generation, and sensibilities. Nadia, the narrator, is a teenaged girl who plans to become a doctor. Her brothers are educated but have difficulty finding work. Some of her family members have lived abroad or are thinking about moving abroad. Her mother was married young and widowed. Nadia's extended family celebrates together, plays games together, cooks together, discusses political and religious issues together and even offers each other places to live.

As an American teenager, I had such similar experiences to Nadia's. Her love interests, plans for her future, and dedication to causes are so familiar. The fact that she sees conspiracies everywhere, like Nancy Drew with wry self-awareness is really sweet. The book really did a fabulous job of making me feel like I could have lived Nadia's life. I recommend it to anyone who wants a good story, who is interested in Syria or Islam, who likes to feel like s/he's learned something while having a good read, or who is curious how anyone could ever contemplate dedicating one's life to a cause.

A Provocative Book
By Vijaya Bodach
Paula Jolin has written an important book about making choices. Nadia is at once familiar and different. Different for the obvious reasons - she lives in Damascus, she's a Syrian Muslim. Jolin paints a picture of this particular family, peppered with a rich cast of characters. Although I had trouble at the very beginning keeping track of all the cousins, I knew each and every one of them well by the end of the book. The characters were authentic, never wholly good or bad, always a blend of the two, just like real folks.

Nadia is familiar. She's a typical teenager who thinks about her future (she wants to become a doctor), her values (she's a devout Muslim) and has good and bad times with her family. I thought her quite resourceful, given her restrictions (by her culture and her values) as she ducks in and out of buses and movie theatres to contact a revolutionary.

Nadia's transformation from devout to fanatic is believable. She's young, she's impressionable, and I feared for her. Nadia's desire to do the right thing drives this story. Jolin's debut novel offers great insight into how a person could be convinced to do almost anything, include killing themselves ... In the Name of God.

I am sure this book will provoke many thoughtful discussions amongst our teens.

Should Be Required Reading For Teens ...
By Mitali Perkins
... and it won't be hard to get them into this story.

I tore through In The Name of God as a reader first, led effortlessly by Paula Jolin's suspenseful plot, vivid characters, and fascinating details about teen life in Syria. Afterwards, though, the buried high school teacher in me came roaring to life, keeping me up late with ideas about how to use this book like mad in the classroom.

We'd read the book, for example, and then my students would pick three historical events in the last fifty years and describe them first in the voice of Nadia, and then through the eyes of an American teen who joins the Marines to fight terrorism. Or I'd get the kids discussing what they might be willing to die for and why. And so on ... how Jolin manages to create a sympathetic suicide bomber in the making is a literary study in itself.

From Publishers Weekly
John Ceepak and his rookie sidekick, Danny Boyle, of the Sea Haven, N.J., police force look into the apparent suicide of Cpl. Shareef Smith, an Iraqi war vet whose body is discovered in a men's room at a Garden State Parkway rest stop, in Grabenstein's entertaining fourth John Ceepak mystery (after 2007's Whack a Mole). The loose plot involves a group of local-yokel thieves, a major drug dealer, a squad of soldiers fresh from the Iraqi battlefields and a blowhard senator who's running for president. As ever, the fun derives chiefly from the comic byplay between Danny, who's young, inexperienced and interested in girls and beer, and Ceepak, a straight-shooter who speaks like a robot and adheres to a strict moral code (I will not tolerate those who lie, cheat, or steal). While some readers may find Danny's narrative voice a tad annoying, even the grumpiest won't be able to resist the occasional smile. (July)

From Booklist
The streets of Grabenstein’s New Jersey beach town get quite a bit meaner in the fourth installment in this entertaining series. An Army Ranger, just back from Iraq, turns up a suicide, and Sea Haven Police Department officers John Ceepak and Danny Boyle soon suspect he has been murdered. The dead man’s hard-partying, edgy fellow rangers include the son of an ambitious senator who wants to become president. When the senator hits town, events quickly escalate, and straight-arrow, decorated Iraq vet Ceepak and his partner find themselves investigating much more than simple murder. Like its three predecessors, this one is narrated breezily by the cynical Boyle, and Grabenstein again shows his intimate knowledge of Jersey shore towns, whose populations swell in the summer from a few thousand to a quarter million. But this series offers far more than a beach-book romp; Hell Hole is taut and satisfying crime fiction. --Thomas Gaughan

Review
"Chris Grabenstein has raised the stakes in Hell Hole, the latest offering in the Ceepak mystery series. All the reasons I fell in love with the series are still there: Danny is still the Candide-like character through whom we see the honorable, lie-hating John Ceepak, the writing is still as smooth as glass and as honest as a boy scout, the dialogue still rings as true as a dinner bell. But in Hell Hole, Grabenstein has taken it to a whole new level. Like the boardwalk ride he describes, he drops the bottom out of what we think we know, and gives us a story that's as dark and mesmerizing as the Hell Hole itself. Don't let the sunny weather of Sea Haven fool you, Hell Hole is one spectacular, gripping ride."
-Louise Ure, Shamus Award-winning author of  The Fault Tree "You stand inside a circular chamber with a dozen other sadomasochists, when suddenly, the chamber starts spinning as the floor drops out. Before you know it, the centrifugal force has you pinned to the wall like a sock during the spin cycle of a washing machine. Dare to throw up and the centrifugal force glues your spew to your body.
When the nightmare finally ends, you agree to the ride operator's offer of a second ride at half price."
—Mitch Lemus from Coney Island, Brooklyn's Playland By The Sea

"Like its three predecessors, this one is narrated breezily by the cynical Boyle, and Grabenstein again shows his intimate knowledge of Jersey shore towns... But this series offers far more than a beach-book romp; HELL HOLE is taut  and satisfying crime fiction."

"[E]ntertaining... As ever, the fun derives chiefly from the comic byplay between Danny, who's young, inexperienced and interested in girls and beer, and Ceepak, a straight-shooter who speaks like a robot and adheres to a strict moral code...even the grumpiest won't be able to resist the occasional smile."
   —Publishers Weekly

"A solid entry in the Ceepak series. Grabenstein... has a great ear for dialogue..."
   —Kirkus Reviews

"Required Reading... perhaps the perfect nexus of war, politics and beachside bravado..."
   —New York Post

"Hell Hole... is every bit as wonderful as the previous books....Grabenstein once again kept me up late with a thrilling novel full of twists and turns. The pacing in these books is perfect and Grabenstein really knows how to grab the reader's attention and run with it. It this book was music I would have the volume all the way up."
   —Jon Jordan, Crimespree Magazine

"The wars in the Gulf and Bosnia have made a new generation acutely aware of soldiers' heroism. But, as Chris Grabenstein shows in his highly entertaining HELL HOLE, heroism can be co-opted by politicians and any coward can pretend to be brave.   The serious, by-the-book John Ceepak is a real hero who helped save lives and was honored for his bravery during his tour as a military police officer. Now he's a regular cop, serving in the resort town of Sea Haven, N.J., with his younger partner, the wise-cracking Danny Boyle. The two don't believe a young corporal, fresh from the Iraqi battlefield, committed suicide in a rest stop. Yet the soldier's squad, who are in a party-hearty mood at a local beach house, and a pompous senator are anxious to wrap up the investigation. Classified information, a band of dumb thieves, a drug dealer and a soldier who brags too much about his heroics provide a trail.   Grabenstein excels again at weaving a serious plot about people traumatized by violence with a sometimes light approach and well-placed humor. HELL HOLE —named after an amusement park ride, like his other novels—moves at a brisk pace as Grabenstein also dissects two lousy fathers and the bonds formed by soldiers.  The relationship between John and Danny, how each grows and learns from each other, continues to be the heart of Grabenstein's four novels.  It's not officially the summer without a visit to the New Jersey shore with Grabenstein."
—Oline H. Cogdill, South Florida Sun-Sentinel

"Grabenstein has the same easy, deft touch, a gift for dialogue and the throw away line that makes you laugh when you are about a paragraph further down the page. He also has a way with a plot...There's a lot of other good material here about politics, the Patriot act, fathers and sons, loyalty and just straight up investigative police work that make this not just a rocket powered, but a textured, read. Grabenstein's prose may be rather straightforward but he relies on the New Jersey poet laureate, Bruce Springsteen, whenever he needs a shot of poetry. Humor, a good police story, and Bruce. To me, this is pretty much a perfect summer read."
—Robin Agnew, Aunt Agatha's Mystery Bookstore, Ann Arbor

"This is the darkest of the Ceepak mysteries, the most complicated, and the best. HELL HOLE is a complex story, revealing not only how much Danny has changed, but how much it takes for Ceepak to be the man he has become. Grabenstein continues to develop, writing darker, more ambitious stories.
He hits his stride with HELL HOLE, a dark crime story of politics,  drugs, and family."
   —Lesa Holstine, Lesa's Book Critiques

"Chris Grabenstein has done the impossible: he's created a mythic character who could plausibly walk among us. John Ceepak is what every police officer should be, and Danny Boyle grows with each book. HELL HOLE is typical Grabenstein, which is to say it hooks you with the first sentence and never lets go. I can't wait for the next one,
and the next, and the next..."
—Jeff Cohen, author of Some Like It Hot Buttered

"Chris Grabenstein has raised the stakes in HELL HOLE, the latest offering in the Ceepak mystery series.    —Louise Ure, Shamus Award-winning author of The Fault Tree

"Dying is easy, comedy is hard. Chris Grabenstein manages to do both so deftly in this utterly enjoyable series it's impossible not to cry, Bravo!"

Grabenstein's coming into his own as a master - Outstanding Mystery
By Lesa Holstine
The Jersey Shore portrayed in Chris Grabenstein's Hell Hole isn't exactly the paradise a chamber of commerce would want publicized. Instead, Grabenstein takes us to the world of Sea Haven, New Jersey, where police officers John Ceepak and Danny Boyle deal with the underside of a resort town - the drunken parties, the drugs, the run-down trailer parks.

Danny Boyle, who has grown from a part-time summer cop to a twenty-six-year-old full-time officer, guided by his partner's principles, continues to narrate the stories, with his own cock-eyed point of view. Ceepak is off one night, so Danny is partnered with a summer cop, Samantha Starky, when they're sent to the scene of a loud party. It's a drunken group of Airborne soldiers, returned from Iraq, and they're not too happy about dealing with the police, until they receive a phone call that one member of their group has been found dead, a probable suicide, at a reststop. Danny's not going to allow Sergeant Dixon to drive intoxicated, so he takes him to identify the body. That brings Danny to a crime scene that just doesn't look like a suicide, although he can't say why. However, the drugs found on the scene point back to Sea Haven, just the opportunity that Danny and Ceepak need to get involved in the case.

Only Ceepak and Boyle would want to stick their noses into this case, one involving a Senator, drugs, the partying soldiers, and Sea Haven's own lowlifes, the Feenyville Pirates. Only Grabenstein could so skillfully use this crime to reveal more about John Ceepak's background. Hell Hole becomes a complicated story that digs deep into Ceepak's emotions, dealing with the returned vets and his own memories, the suicide and his own past, and the story of his parents. This is the darkest of the Ceepak mysteries, the most complicated, and the best. Danny Boyle serves to alleviate that darkness. He's grown in the course of the series, but his wry commentaries are needed in these books.

Hell Hole is a complex story, revealing not only how much Danny has changed, but how much it takes for Ceepak to be the man he has become. Grabenstein continues to develop, writing darker, more ambitious stories. He hits his stride with Hell Hole, a dark crime story of politics, drugs, and family. If you've read all of the Ceepak mysteries, you're following the growth of a new master.

Jersey Shore comic noir
By Ron Edison
The latest entry in the John Ceepak series is easily the best, building on what was a brilliant series from the get-go. Grabenstein manages to be edgy and darkly realistic while retaining the humorous tone of Danny's narrative that makes this series so notable and successful. Like its predecessors, HELL HOLE follows traditional mystery form but drapes it with a grim authenticity and topicality that should appeal to mystery fans as well as those whose taste leans more to noir and thriller fiction.

Best one yet
By Kathleen Williams
This is the 4th book in the John Ceepak/Danny Boyle Sea Haven mystery series and I think it's the best one yet. Chris Grabenstein writes great dialog and really knows how to keep me turning the pages. I love that the Bruce Springsteen references are still there! My only regret is that I didn't save this gem for my shore reading!

In the month of Nisan in the twentieth year of King Artaxerxes, when wine was brought for him, I took the wine and gave it to the king. I had not been sad in his presence before; so the king asked me, “Why does your face look so sad when you are not ill? This can be nothing but sadness of heart.”
Nehemiah 2:1-2 (NIV)
Cooper Lee was not having a good day. She had spent the morning at an elementary school in the Far West End, trying to coax their aged copier, a Toshiba e-Studio28, back to life. But the machine had given its all and no amount of replacement parts, duct tape, or prayers were going to keep it running.
Kneeling on the floor next to her toolbox, a soiled rag, and the copier’s rectangular back panel, Cooper examined the dirty developer tray. In removing the part, her hands and forearms had gotten covered in toner. As she worked, she’d rubbed her face in vexation, knowing that it would be impossible to resuscitate the spent machine.
Unaware of the splotches of gray and black ink on her cheeks and nose, Cooper sighed. She knew that the school didn’t have the funds in their budget to purchase a new copier, and they’d desperately need one soon as summer break was ticking to an end.
“Hey!” a voice nearby whispered. Cooper looked up to see a girl dressed in a Hannah Montana T-shirt and white shorts standing over her.
“Hi.” She smiled. “Aren’t you supposed to be on vacation?”
“My mom works here,” the girl replied. “I had to help her carry stuff into her office.” She continued to study Cooper’s face with interest. “You look like you have the boooooobonic plague. I learned all about that for my summer reading assignment.” She crossed her arms across her flat chest and peered at Cooper intently. “Are those black boils?”
Cooper laughed. “No, I do not have the bubonic plague. I probably smeared some ink from the copier on my face. Happens all the time.”
The girl frowned. “Gross. I don’t want a dirty job when I grow up. I’m going to be a famous singer and I’ll live in a huge house, get driven around in a super-big limo, and own, like, twenty horses.” She stretched out her skinny arms to emphasize her point. “Then my mommy can quit her job. She’s the school nurse and I think what she does is gross, too!” The girl lowered her voice to an awed whisper. “She gives people shots! With needles!”
Examining her reflection in the shiny surface of an adjustable steel wrench, Cooper grinned and began to wipe away the ink on her face using a clean rag. “Well, I’m happiest when I’m getting messy. My hands are usually covered in ink, garden soil, or cookie dough.”
“You’re weird,” the girl whispered and then looked back over her shoulder as though her mother might be close enough to overhear her rude remark. “But you’re still pretty,” she amended and then skipped away.
Cooper replaced the back panel of the defunct machine, taking her time turning the screws. This was the only part of her job at Make It Work!, an office-machine sales and repair company operating out of Richmond, Virginia, that Cooper disliked. She hated telling nice people, like the secretary in the front office, that she had been unable to fulfill their expectations and could not repair their machine.
Dusting off her uniform shirt, Cooper snapped her toolbox closed and stood. She patted the lid of the copier. “You’ve given them your best. Time for you to retire to the greener pastures of the recycling facility.”
Gathering her tools, Cooper steeled herself and walked down the hall to the front office. The secretary took one look at her doleful expression and said, “Oh, dear. You don’t look like you’ve got happy news for me.”
“No, ma’am, I’m afraid I don’t.”
The secretary paused for a moment, unable to keep herself from staring at the repairwoman’s unusual eyes. The left eye was blue, but such a pale shade of blue that it was almost colorless. The right eye, however, was star-tlingly green. It immediately called to mind a meadow of emerald grass in the peak of spring, dappled by sunlight and bright circles of marigolds. The woman’s face was quite lovely, though her nose was a bit too long and angular and her dirty-blonde hair, which was cut in a flattering style, could do with some highlights. The secretary took in Cooper’s athletic figure with a prick of envy.
She could use a bit of makeup, the secretary thought and then blinked, embarrassed at having stared at the repairwoman so blatantly.
“Oh, my.” The secretary shook her head slightly as the enormity of Cooper’s prognosis sank in. “Are you sure you can’t fix our copier? We really need to get a few more months out of that machine.”
“It’s totally gone, ma’am. I would have been lucky to get you two or three more minutes, let alone months. It’s got nothing left to give.”
The secretary nodded, unsurprised by the revelation. “I know you did your best. You always do and we appreciate the extra time you’ve given us by keeping that ’ole dinosaur runnin’ on a wing and a prayer.” She rose and, signing Cooper’s work order, walked her to the front door.
“It’s going to take more than a bake sale to raise funds for a new copier.” The secretary’s expression was bleak. “And with school starting in two weeks, I don’t know what we’re going to do.” She wrung her hands anxiously.
“The way I see it—you’ve got two choices. You can soak a mess of cakes in a barrel of rum and hope that the folks who show up for your bake sale write you checks with a whole lot of zeroes. Or,” Cooper smiled wryly, “you could lease one of our machines until you raise the money for a new one.”
The secretary brightened. “A lease?” She paused to consider the idea. “I’m fond of the rum cake plan, too, but a lease just might get us through the crisis. Thank you, Ms. Lee. You’re an angel! Please call me with the rates as soon as you’re able. We need a copier in here as of yesterday.” Then her face grew solemn and she lowered her voice. “And you’ll take away the old one for us?”
Cooper nodded to the older woman, said she’d call back later with leasing options, and hopped into a black van with the Make It Work! logo splashed across both sides in bright red lettering. As she drove back to the office, she remembered that the new employee Mr. Farmer had hired to handle the document-shredding side of the business would be at work today. Initially, Mr. Farmer had filled the need by having the son of his widowed next-door neighbor work over the summer, but the young man was returning to college for the fall, so Cooper’s boss had placed an ad in the Richmond Times-Dispatch ten days ago. However, he’d ended up hiring a cousin recently relocated from northern New Jersey. As a result, no one had met the mysterious new addition to their team, and all three of Mr. Farmer’s staff members were curious to discover what kind of person would become their coworker.
“Thank goodness he didn’t hire some pageant princess,” Angela said, giggling as she told Cooper about meeting the new employee while Cooper was at the elementary school.
Angela, the office manager at Make It Work!, wore a typically tight pencil skirt, a low-cut blouse, and an armload of vintage bangles. As Cooper looked at Angela’s platinum-blonde bob, held firmly in place by a wide pink headband and half a can of Aqua Net, she noticed the presence of a beauty mark on Angela’s cheek that had never been there before.
“I’m not sure there are too many pageant princess interested in a career in document shredding,” Cooper said. Tapping her own cheek with her index finger, she teased Angela. “You’re really channeling Marilyn Monroe today, huh?”
Angela batted her false eyelashes as she examined her reflection in a compact that was never far from reach. “I wanna see if Mr. Farmer notices.” She leaned over her desk and whispered, “And if he doesn’t, then I sure hope that gorgeous creature gettin’ dressed in one of our uniform shirts does.” Her eyes gleamed.
“So tell me about the new guy.” Cooper leaned comfortably against Angela’s desk. “I can see you’re fit to burst over him.”
Angela placed her hands over her ample bosom. “Lord, I don’t know what I did to deserve such tasty eye candy! This boy is a stud cocktail made up of one part soap opera star, one part professional baseball player, and three parts Chippendale dancer.” She frowned. “He’s a bit too young for me, unfortunately. You know you’re old when you wish you were forty again, but I can still look.” She wiggled her pencil-drawn eyebrows. “And if he asked me to dinner, I wouldn’t be in any hurry to say no.”
At that moment, Mr. Farmer stepped out of his office at the end of the hall. The owner/manager of Make It Work! was a short, stocky, balding man resembling the actor Danny DeVito. A quiet, reserved individual, he was a kind and generous employer. Angela had been flirting with him for years, and though he occasionally displayed a hint of fondness for her in return, he had never officially asked her out on a date.
“Good morning, Cooper.” Mr. Farmer straightened his tie, which was embroidered with cobalt computer monitors on a field of yellow. “Our new employee is in the locker room. His name is Emilio Calabria and word has it that this young fellow is an exemplary salesman. He’s sure to increase our burgeoning secure document-destruction division. Ben will be showi...

The Skull Mantra (Inspector Shan Tao Yun), by Eliot Pattison

Winner of the 2001 Edgar Award for Best First Novel, The Skull Mantra was a sensation when first published and received wide acclaim from critics and readers alike. The Skull Mantra is ranked as a novel about a people and a place--the Tibetans of the high Himalayas--as it is a gripping thriller.

The corpse is missing its head and is dressed in American clothes. Found by a Tibetan prison work gang on a windy cliff, the grisly remains clearly belong to someone too important for Chinese authorities to bury and forget. So the case is handed to veteran police inspector Shan Tao Yun. Methodical, clever Shan is the best man for the job, but he too is a prisoner, deported to Tibet for offending someone high up in Beijing's power structure. Granted a temporary release, Shan is soon pulled into the Tibetan people's desperate fight for its sacred mountains and the Chinese regime's blood-soaked policies. Then, a Buddhist priest is arrested, a man Shan knows is innocent. Now time is running out for Shan to find the real killer.

The Skull Mantra is the winner of the 2000 Edgar Award for Best First Novel.

Amazon.com Review
Not many political thrillers are set in Tibet, and few can match the power and poetry of this debut novel by journalist Eliot Pattison. At the heart of the story is a forced labor camp where the Chinese imprison Buddhist monks and other local dissidents they've swept up since taking over Tibet. The prison also holds a few special Chinese prisoners--including Shan Tao Yun. This middle-aged man was once the inspector general of the Ministry of Economy in Beijing, specializing in fraud cases. For reasons even he doesn't understand, he has been imprisoned and brutalized, and now he spends his days breaking rocks high in the Himalayas on a road crew called the People's 404th Construction Brigade. Shan manages to survive under these harsh conditions thanks to the spiritual guidance of his fellow prisoners, but this precarious balance is threatened by the discovery of the headless body of a local Chinese official near a road construction site.

The dead man's head soon turns up in a famous shrine--a cave that contains the skulls of heroic monks. The shrewd Red Army colonel in charge of the district asks Shan to conduct an investigation: offers of better food and conditions combined with threats against his monk friends convinces him to take on the task. Colonel Tan wants a fast resolution that imcriminates a mute, passive monk found near the cave, but Shan is certain that the man isn't guilty. More likely killers include other high-ranking Chinese officials, as well as some American mining capitalists who had personal as well as financial dealings with the dead man.

By engaging his readers in a mass of details, Pattison makes us believe completely in Shan and his perilous situation--and creates a rare combination of excitement and enlightenment. --Dick Adler

From Publishers Weekly
A venerable plot deviceAthe discredited detective given one last chanceAis invested with stunning new life in this debut thriller from a veteran journalist who clearly knows his exotic territory. The gulags of Tibet, where the Chinese keep the Buddhist monks and other locals they've swept up since occupying the country, also house a few special Chinese prisoners. Shan Tao Yun, working as a laborer on a road crew called the People's 404th Construction Brigade high in the Himalayas, was once the inspector general of the Ministry of Economy in Beijing before he was imprisoned for refusing Party membership. Now he struggles to survive his harsh new life, gaining spiritual sustenance from the monks in his brigade. The discovery of the headless body of a local official, wearing American clothes and carrying American cash, changes all that, as Shan is threatened and cajoled by the shrewd colonel in charge of the district into conducting an investigation. Col. Tan wants a quick and dirty job that implicates a monk found near the site, but Shan knows the man isn't guilty: more-likely culprits include other high-ranking Chinese and a pair of American mining entrepreneurs. To encourage Shan to come to a rapid resolution, Tan dangles the fate of the monks of the 404th before him, surrounding their barracks with brutal Public Security troops. Like Martin Cruz Smith's Arkady Renko, Shan becomes our Don Quixote, an apolitical guide through a murky world of failed socialism. As his Sancho, Pattison has created another memorable character, an ambitious and conflicted young Tibetan called Yeshe, who can "sound like a monk one moment and a party functionary the next." Set against a background that is alternately bleak and blazingly beautiful, this is at once a top-notch thriller and a substantive look at Tibet under siege.

From Library Journal
Sentenced to penal servitude in Tibet, Shan, a disgraced prosecutor, is assigned instead to complete a pro forma investigation of the gruesome murder of a Chinese official. The party line is that dissident Tibetan monks are to blame, but Shan quickly realizes that the truth lies in other directions. Working with Buddhist rituals, Shan shapes and discards theories to fit a range of facts, emotions, and spiritual beings. Set in the mountainous regions of Lhasa, this first novel is a stark and compelling saga of the conflict between disdainful and violent Chinese and nonviolent Tibetans trying to protect the vestiges of their faith. As in Tony Hillerman's Navajo mysteries, Pattison's characters venerate traditional beliefs, and mystical insight is a tool for finding murderers. Pattison writes with confident knowledge and spare, graceful prose. With Tibet so much in the news lately, all public libraries will have readers for this book. Heavy going, but generally rewarding
By A Customer
This is an engrossing story, and the author does a splendid job of bringing the setting alive. His picture of Tibet under the Chinese administration is painful to read but unfortunately accurate, and, to his great credit, he avoids the temptation to depict all Chinese officials as Bad Guys; the occupation of Tibet is shown to be painful for the more conscientious Chinese too. I found that the characters were a mixed bag: Shan and his Chinese and Tibetan partners-in-investigation were fully rounded and believable, but some of the other characters (especially the two Americans) were one-dimensional. The novel was rough going at times, too: there are long stretches where what you're reading is fascinating, but it's hard to see the relevance of it to the investigation; and although the author offers a neat resolution of the mystery at the end, some of the other possible explanations he raised were never satisfactorily resolved. As for the criticism that the novel's depiction of Tibetan Buddhism is full of errors, I'm not an expert on the subject, although I do volunteer work for a Tibetan refugee relief organization and hang around with a lot of Tibetans. But I know that it's erroneous to view Tibetan Buddhism as a monolithic whole: there are various schools of thought and monastic traditions, and the indigenous Bon religion, which preceded Buddhism, is shamanistic and magical. Westerners are usually initiated into the monastic side of Tibetan Buddhism, but the magic often looms larger in ordinary people's lives, and I think the author did a good job of showing that. All in all, the novel is rewarding, but it's not the light escapist reading that one often expects from mysteries.

Meet "Inspector" Shan
By Chit-and-chat
An absorbing introduction to the series (Book 2 is 5 stars): an ex-Chinese bureaucrat, jailed in a detention prison in Tibet, is the outsider, observing and learning Tibetans and their religion--a complex of nomad animism and Tantric Buddhism, sometime after Mao's Cultural Revolution. He grows spiritually, sees both the corruption and good intentions of the Chinese bureaucrats (who are basically in exile themselves), and perceives the truths behind what seem like centuries-old superstition. Gore and violence, juxtaposed with Shan's desire for clarity and peace, without passivism.

An amazing mystery!
By Joseph David Quinton
The Skull Mantra is one amazing mystery.....as mysterious as the country in which it takes place. It reminds me of a mystery crafted by Dame Agatha Christie, who I consider to be the best writers of mysteries that has ever been. Throughout the narrative, we are provided small clues and we think we have it figured out but Pattison saves everything for the conclusion and our mind is totally blown. I thoroughly enjoyed The Skull Mantra and I will definitely be reading the other books in the series. I have actually already purchased eBooks of the second and third books!

Spirit of Adventure: Eagle Scouts and the Making of America's Future, by Alvin Townley

An extraordinary journey alongside America's new generation of Eagle Scouts, who are discovering their purpose and bringing the values of Scouting to the world.

Over the past century, Scouts have helped to guide the course of American history. But what does Scouting and the Eagle badge mean to the Scouts of today? How will they shape the future of Scouting and America itself? In Spirit of Adventure, Scouting expert and Eagle Scout Alvin Townley finds the answer.

Townley traveled across the country and to the far corners of the globe to meet these young Eagle Scouts. He found them everywhere, continuing the life of adventure and service that they had begun in Scouting. He discovered them in Afghanistan providing medical care to villagers, in Australia saving coral reefs, at the Super Bowl and Olympic venues striving for victory, on desert cliffs and at inner-city schools teaching new lessons, in Africa bringing hope to children, and on the windswept deck of the aircraft carrier USS Nimitz preparing for takeoff.

Whether doctors, activists, servicemen, entrepreneurs, or teachers, these young men are changing the world through bold actions that capture the essence of the Scouting tradition. In Spirit of Adventure, Townley answers important questions about the future of Scouting and America, while revealing stories of service, courage, and pure excitement that introduce our nation to an inspiring new generation of leaders.

From School Library Journal
Adult/High School—A hiking trip gone uncomfortably wrong, in violation of the first credo of Scouting to "Be Prepared," caused Townley to revisit the history of Scouting and its principles. It also provided him with the spark to begin a year of traveling the world collecting anecdotes from adults who have taken these principles of and incorporated them into their everyday lives. These men, all of whom achieved the highest honor attainable, tended to gravitate toward professions that allowed them to exemplify the service attitude and leadership they learned while enjoying the camaraderie of others. From doctor to soldier, teacher, actor, and Olympic competitor, each man had a story to tell about how Scouting led him to make choices that would enrich his life. Written with a distinctly American point of view, Townley's book puts forth the idea that the underlying principles of Scouting help boys to become men who will be compassionate, competitive leaders. An extensive index and full-color photos enhance this solidly written entry about the value of old-fashioned American gumption.—Charli Osborne, Oxford Public Library, MI

Great Motivational Book!
By D. Williams
Once again Mr. Townley has produced an amazing motivating book featuring the highlights of Eagle Scouts around the world. Like he did for Legacy of Honor, Mr. Townley left behind his day to day life to continue his adventure meeting Eagle Scouts from around the world. This time he focused on Eagle Scouts from his generation to see if they were still living with the same passion and purpose that they had once applied to Scouting.

The book itself is an easy read. Each Eagle Scout is represented in a chapter while Mr. Townley keeps the book flowing by tying all of the stories together with an overall theme and smooth transitions. The reader almost feels like he is on the journey with the author, sitting down and meeting with the Eagle Scouts that are showcased. At the same time, you'll find yourself thinking back to your days at summer camp, the leaders who made a difference in your life, and the fun times you had as a Scout.

Spirit of Adventure is definitely a motivational book that shows that Scouting does make a difference in this world. Those of us that are still with the program will be able to relate to the success that Scouting can bring to a young man's life. It's a reminder that we are shaping the future.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who works with youth or is associated with Scouting. It inspired me to reflect on my journey through life and who I've become today. Spirit of Adventure would make a great gift for an Eagle Scout, or a little motivation for a young man working towards the goal of becoming an Eagle Scout.

America celebrates the 100th anniversary of Scouting in 2010. What impact has this program made on America's youth, particularly those in their 20's and 30's who earned Scouting's highest rank, the coveted Eagle award?
Alvin Townley's new book, Spirit of Adventure, Eagle Scouts and the Making of America's Future, explores this theme with a nonstop jaunt from the roots of Scouting in England to Australia's barrier reef, then through the halls of Walter Reed Army Medical Center and on to the roar of Super Bowl XLIII in Tampa Bay. All through the eyes of Eagle Scouts who are already making a positive difference in their community, their nation and the world.
By combining current life scenarios along with youthful Scouting adventures Townley captures the essence of a small slice of America's electronic generation and the values and issues that are important to them. These Eagle Scouts give us a refreshing look at honor, courage and commitment.
The common thread among these Eagle Scouts is their desire for adventure and a willingness to set and achieve goals while making a positive difference in the lives of others. Values they all attribute to Scouting, their Scoutmasters and earning the rank of Eagle.
Spirit of Adventure is a good book for Scouting alumni as well as those who wish to examine what makes people successful. It is also an uplifting look at a new generation of American leaders who are ready to lead and serve.

This was a perfect gift for my son-in-law who is an Eagle Scout and working with my grandson to also attain this rank in Boy Scouts. The book was in perfect condition and arrived in a short turn around time.
