Patriotism, Kiernan argues, transcends empty flag waving and political posturing, and lies instead in our service to each other and our willingness to sacrifice for the sake of our country and its people. For the author, authentic patriotism is found in the actions of people who take on our most profound social problems—problems the free market ignores in the absence of a clear profit to be had, and that our government has grown too slow moving and detached to effectively address. For example, retired pharmaceutical researcher Jack McConnell saw thousands of people in his community struggling without adequate health care and launched a free clinic that has grown into the Volunteers in Medicine program with 78 clinics in 24 states. Attorney Barry Scheck could not bear the injustice of innocent people languishing in prisons and founded the Innocence Project; today, hundreds of innocent prisoners have been exonerated. America Needs Authentic Patriotism

Like the great orators of the past, author Stephen Kiernan rekindles our passion for the America our forefathers intended, and provides the inspiration that we need to remember that each of us has the power to make a difference. Authentic Patriotism

I am thoroughly enjoying this book. I highly recommend it as a gift for anyone who wants to pass on some inspiration to others. The stories are uplifting and inspiring. It is one of those books that we all should read when we get caught up in our petty issues. The people that Stephen writes about got outside of themselves and made a difference for so many others. They are the examples of what makes us proud to be American. The stories encourage us to dream big. They remind us to stop expecting the government to solve all of our society's troubles. I wish the people who run the political machinery and the media would read this and understand that we don't need the back stabbing of politics but would much prefer inspiration to make lemonade out of lemons.

Stephen Kiernan MUST be read

Much like his earlier work, Last Rights, Kiernan takes an enormous subject through discplined, non-partisan, newshound filters and illucidates solutions so scuccintly that you can't help but be awed and grateful he bothered. His premise should give the Doomsday 2012 Survivalists time to return their 'one-year-family-of-four food' stock pile kits.
