The Sacco and Vanzetti Case: A Brief History with Documents (Bedford Series in History & Culture), by Michael M. Topp

In 1920 Nicola Sacco and Bartolomeo Vanzetti, two Italian immigrants and devout anarchists, were accused of robbery and murder. Their subsequent trial and execution captivated the world and exposed many of the cultural and political tensions of 1920s America. Sacco and Vanzetti’s supporters claimed the two anarchists had been persecuted for their beliefs and not their actions, while their detractors saw proof of the country’s ability to protect itself from dangerous foreign elements. Michael Topp’s unique collection of documents examines both sides and provides a clear presentation of the trial while emphasizing the broad historical context in which it was conducted. An interpretive introductory essay, document headnotes, a chronology, and questions for consideration provide further pedagogical support. A bibliographic essay and a brief discussion of artistic productions based on the trial are also included.

Review
"Topp's book is well-written and scholarly, yet accessible to the general reader. It is clear, it is comprehensive, and it is fairminded. It provides a full and objective history of Sacco and Vanzetti as we are likely to see for some years."
--Paul Avrich, Queens College/CUNY

"This is a much-needed work that makes the Sacco-Vanzetti case accessible to students in a lucid and sophisticated presentation of the background, development, and outcome of the case. I do not think there is a better treatment designed to be used in class."
--Philip Cannistraro, Queens College/CUNY

"The documents Professor Topp has selected are very appropriate for his purposes, perfectly illustrating the main themes articulated in his introduction. Most of this material (trial transcript and Galleani's writings especially) is very difficult to obtain even for scholars, much less students. Some of it has never before been translated into English. Topp's scholarship is one of the most compelling qualities of the project."
--Nuncio Pernicone, Drexel University

"Topp has done an excellent job of locating the Sacco and Vanzetti trial in its time and place. The various elements-Italian ancestry, anarchist beliefs, the tense political atmosphere, the unfair operation of the investigative and judicial machinery, the dismay and rising anger of those sensitive to the commission of injustice-that together explain why the trial assumed such importance then, and continues to stir debate, are all expertly handled."
--Mark Gelfand, Boston College

Leap of Faith
By Penname
Professor Topp's narrative was fine and his choice of documents was entirely up to him. I take exception, however, to the statements that seem to indicate that he has swallowed whole Young and Kaiser,s totally unsupported leap of faith pertaining to Berardelli"s gun. There is absolutely no evidence that the gun discovered to have been purchased by Parmenter was in fact the same gun that Berardelli carried. What is known is that Parmenter had more than one gun. Vanzetti's gun certainly could have been Berardelli's. There is, of course, no positive proof.

History of Vanzetti's Revolver
By Richard Newby
Topp claims, p 24: "Katzmann knew that Vanzetti's gun did not match Berardelli's." Topp omits the defense's theory that the H. & R. revolver police took from Vanzetti upon his arrest had been grocer Frank Morgridge's revolver in Dexter, Maine. (A 3:00 A. M. fire destroyed Frank's two-story wooden building on Feb. 2, 1914.) On June 30, 1921, Frank's son-in-law, Elbridge Atwater, testified he fired the revolver (Exhibit 27) in 1916. He testified a leather case (Exhibit M) was with the revolver. (Morgridge died on Oct. 30, 1916.) Atwater claimed widow Abbie Morgridge took the revolver with her when she visited her daughter in Norwood, Massachusetts. On July 1, 1921, Rexford Slater testified his mother-in-law brought the revolver and a holster with her, that he sold the revolver to Ricardo Orciani, who worked with him in a Norwood shop. On July 1 Luigi Falzini testified he bought the revolver on October 1, 1919, from Mr. Orciani. Responding to Katzmann's question, Falzini said he saw Orciani sitting in a car last week outside the court house. In his closing argument, p. 2229, Katzmann reminded the jury that Vanzetti testified he bought the revolver a few years ago "in Boston and paid $16 or $17 for a $5 gun" (Transcript, pp. 1749-1750). On p. 2233 Katzmann chided the defense for refusing to let Orciani testify.

In a letter from Dexter, Me. June 17, 1921, C. C. Palmer, Maine State Police officer told Katzmann that Atwater and Slater "of this town left this noon . . . to testify in the defense of Sacco and Vanzetti." Palmer said that Slater . . . "last year was employed in a foundry at Norwood, Mass. and working in the same shop with him was an Italian [Ricardo Orciani] to whom he sold a revolver and . . . the contention of the defense will be that this revolver was later sold to Vanzetti." Palmer adds: "Several weeks ago an Italian came to this town and, . . . endeavored to get these men to go to Dedham to testify. They refused and several days ago Mrs. Fred H. Moore, wife of one of the attorneys for the defense, came here and labored with them until they agreed to go to Dedham. . . . Slater told me to-day that he would be unable to identify the revolver which he sold the Italian."

Topp's claim, p. 22, that Sacco's "father had just died," is an egregious error.

Good, though wish the document section was longer.
By AProf
Very informative book with a readable account of the trial and the events surrounding it. If you are getting this for the documents, you should know that documents related to the actual courtroom portion of the trial are pretty slim. There are only a couple of brief sections of court testimony. Many of the documents are contemporary views on the case or about related events also occurring at the time.
