Narative Textbook
By Nhu-hoa Thi Nguyen
Although "Roark seems to emphasize some events that seem less important to U. S. History" as Mr. Jack A. White stated, this book is written in the narrative stand point. Therefore, it should be read more like a story and not a textbook. If you're using this book in high school, it will be good practice since more college books are narrative.

The Fourth Time Is Murder: A Posadas County Mystery (Posadas County Mysteries), by Steven F. Havill

Undersheriff Estelle Reyes-Guzman is always busy, but more so now than ever. The sheriff is still not completely recovered from his stay in the hospital, and she is recovering from a hospital stay herself. After a long day at work, Estelle is happy to clear off her desk and drive home, where her beloved family waits. She hears her cell phone ringing as she pulls into the driveway. A truck has gone off the road and the driver’s body found near the wreck. Back on the job, Estelle drives to the scene, where she finds more questions than answers.

Was the truck’s going over the hill really an accident? And why was there a single footprint on the man’s body? An autopsy spurs further puzzles.

Steven F. Havill paints a vivid portrait of this small New Mexico town in the sixth entry of this atmospheric, entertaining series.

From Booklist
A man swerves to avoid a deer on a rain-slicked highway, flips over the guardrail, and plunges to his death. Posadas County, New Mexico, under-sheriff Estelle Reyes-Guzman notices a suspicious footprint at the scene. The subsequent autopsy is troubling, too. The victim’s actual cause of death was drowning. Someone—probably Footprint—poured beer down the man’s throat until he drowned. A second tragedy follows close behind when a young illegal accidentally severs a femoral artery with a chainsaw and bleeds out in a remote area. In her investigation, Reyes-Guzman learns the crash victim was delivering “sweepstakes awards” to the locals in exchange for cash deposits to cover “handling charges and differences in the exchange rates.” The sixth Posadas County mystery featuring Reyes-Guzman—her predecessor, Bill Gastner, was featured in nine previous books—builds on the series’ strengths. The plot is revealed slowly and imaginatively. Reyes-Guzman is both an ambitious professional and family woman, forever fretting that she’s neglecting either the job or the family. And, as always, Havill insinuates small-town rhythms, prejudices, and concerns into the mix for a satisfying, intelligent mystery. --Wes Lukowsky

Best Yet in Havill's Estelle Reyes-Guzman Series
By Mary A. Sarber
I have been a fan of Steven Havill's Posadas County mysteries since the first Bill Gastner title came out. THE FOURTH TIME IS MURDER is one of the best of both series, and definitely the best in the Estelle series. Havill has skillfully created a microcosm of life on the U.S.-Mexico border, a world of its own in fictional Posadas County, New Mexico. In this book, Undersheriff Estelle Reyes Guzman is "on" in nearly every scene, and those scenes are full of action as well as of thoughtful observation. The reader gets to know Estelle better than ever before. Minor characters are as deftly drawn as is Estelle, and former Undersheriff Bill Gastner makes a brief appearance. Highly recommended for readers who like strong local color and realistic psychology.

Welcome Back, Old Friend!
By Joe K. Bolin
Review of The Fourth Time is Murder

I've been a fan of the Posadas County series of police procedurals since 1991's Heartshot, but until this installment, I never felt the same affinity for Undersheriff Guzman as for her predecessor, Sheriff Bill Gastner. In this fifteenth novel in the series, Havill rightly moves the focus from Guzman's family life to her police work. Dr. Francis and the boys are still around, but very much in the background. A more prominent role for Gastner is also welcome.
The Fourth Time is Murder presents three storylines, two woven together seamlessly and one standing alone. Havill leaves one of the storylines open, hopefully to be concluded in the next novel. Another minor storyline involving a Posadas County deputy, is never fully resolved, while the main storyline is brought to a satisfying resolution. The next novel in the series will hopefully pick up where The Fourth Time is Murder left off.
Posadas County, as always, is a palpable presence throughout the novel. Characters who have previously only played background roles are given much larger parts as they help--or hinder-- Guzman's investigation.
For fans of the series, this novel is the best addition in years. To readers looking for a mystery series with a strong sense of place: welcome! Posadas County is the perfect place to spend an evening...or a night...or an early morning, riding the backroads with an insomniac undersheriff.

Reviewing: "The Fourth Time Is Murder"
By Kevin Tipple
It takes the body a long time to heal when you nearly die. For Undersheriff Estelle Reyes-Guzman, the violence that nearly killed her happened over a year ago and she still isn't back to normal. She is working again, but she feels it from time to time in ways she never felt it before. The fatality on Regal Pass not only reminds her of how fragile life is but how her body is still not healed.

Psychologically, she isn't healed either. Something the dead man doesn't care about as he lays crumpled in the wreckage of his truck. Hundreds of feet down the mountainside the wreckage is difficult to get to in daylight and late at night with mist and cold closing in the San Cristobal Mountains it is extremely dangerous. Obviously the man is dead and the wreckage has been down the cliff strewn among the rocks and boulders for while.

But, somebody else has been there. It isn't just the fact that various identifying items that should be in the truck aren't there in the shattered hulk or strewn around the area. Amidst the beer cans and debris of what is left of the truck, the victim has part of a shoe print on his hand. Somebody stepped on his hand. Since it wasn't any of the rescuers it means it was either a witness or a murderer.

The latest in the series finds Estelle juggling issues with her family, a national reporter determined to write a profile of her for a woman's magazine, and a murder. The conflict between her role as a parent and her job continues as well as a growing realization that her family is moving towards a different future that may or may not be what she ever wanted. That concept which is growing stronger in every book since Bill Gastner was eased off the main stage is a huge theme here along with the idea that the border, like the vein of life, is as thin ribbon easily crossed by good and evil alike.

Once again, Steven F. Havill brings Posadas County and its people to like in a series that fundamentally changed several novels ago. While it hasn't been the same since Bill Gastner was moved to the role of a secondary character, Estelle Guezman more than holds her own in this novel that delivers a strong storyline, plenty of action, and depth to the read. This simply might be the best book he has written since the switch in the series and I suspect it will be nominated for many awards.

Dear Mrs. Kennedy: The World Shares Its Grief, Letters November 1963, by Jay Mulvaney, Paul De Angelis

From the bestselling author of Kennedy Weddings and Diana and Jackie comes a powerful and moving collection of the condolence letters Jacqueline Kennedy received after the assassination of John F. Kennedy

In the weeks and months following the assassination of her husband, First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy received more than one million letters. The impact of President Kennedy's death was so immense that people from every station in life wrote to her, sharing their feelings of sympathy, sorrow, and hope.

She received letters from political luminaries such as Winston Churchill, Martin Luther King Jr., and Charles De Gaulle. Hollywood stars like Lauren Bacall, Vivian Leigh, and Gene Kelly voiced their sympathy, as did foreign dignitaries including Queen Elizabeth II, the King and Queen of Greece, and the Prince of Monaco. Distinguished members of the arts and society―Ezra Pound, Noel Coward, Babe Paley, Langston Hughes, Oleg Cassini, Josephine Baker―offered their heartfelt condolences. And children, with the most heartbreaking sincerity, reached out to the First Lady to comfort her in her time of grief.

More than just a compendium of letters, Dear Mrs. Kennedy uses these many voices to tell the unforgettable story of those fateful four days in November, when the world was struck with shock and sadness. It vividly captures the months that followed, as a nation---and a family---attempted to rebuild.

Filled with emotion, patriotism, and insight, the letters are a poignant time capsule of one of the seminal events of the twentieth century. Dear Mrs. Kennedy offers a diverse portrait not only of the aftermath of the assassination, but of the Kennedy mystique that continues to captivate the world.

From Publishers Weekly
"Never have I been so filled with revulsion, anger, and sorrow as when I heard of your husband's death," wrote Winston Churchill to Jackie Kennedy on November 24, 1963. And a fourth-grade Nebraska farm boy wrote to little Caroline Kennedy, "I am sorry to hear about your Daddy. God will take good care of him." Immediately after President Kennedy's assassination, more than 1,250,000 letters arrived at the White House from the famous and ordinary citizens alike, expressing their sorrow and sympathy for the president's young widow, Although she promised that the letters would be displayed at the Kennedy Library, they remained filed in a warehouse for decades until the opening of the library building. A controversial culling reducing the collection to 368,000 letters also delayed cataloguing of the letters until 1988. Mulvaney ((Diana and Jackie) and former publishing executive De Angelis regard the collection as a "poignant time capsule," and they include an informative historical backdrop for their selections, including letters from society queen Babe Paley, Rev. Billy Graham, and publisher Bennett Cerf, among many others. For those who relive the pain of the Kennedy assassination every November 22, this volume will provide company and perhaps some consolation. 20 b&w illus. (Nov.) (c)

intimate history of the tragedy & its chorus
By ella
This is a wonderful & elegant book. The author gives the context of each letter and its writer, describes their relationship to Jacqueline & JFK, and meshes all aspects of the letters and their writers into a multifaceted yet cohesive and moving portrait of that time. We hear from everyone, from the taxi driver to Igor Stravinsky. I couldn't put it down.

Splendidly selected and edited
By Mystery Veteran
This moving collection, which I couldn't put down, beautifully illuminates a moment that, with its almost overwhelming connectness, fully resonates today. Those who were witnesses to its history will cherish Dear Mrs. Kennedy, of course, but it's also the perfect gift for those who're fascinated by the '60s yet weren't around for the era. There was more happening than the Beatles, after all.

Classic History
By C. A. Hodgdon
How could someone NOT be supportive of a book as sympathetic and graceful as this one? The additional commentaries really are "super" ; exactly what I could have wished for in a book of such gripping historical importance. And my additional hope for the book is that it becomes a staple and a way for young people to learn about that era and to get the feel of a country much more gentle and loving than it is now. Mr. De Angelis has accomplished that beautifully in his prose; now to get out the message to the rest of America. This is a perfect Christmas gift for the young and old.

Amazon.com Review
In each successive novel since Degree of Guilt, Richard North Patterson has experimented with flashbacks and past tragedies to drive the present suspense of his legal thrillers. Silent Witness is, perhaps, his greatest achievement with the technique as his hero, Tony Lord, is haunted by the 27-year-old murder of his high school girlfriend, Alison Taylor.

In the late 1960s, Tony is the star of the Lake City, Ohio, high school football team. But when Alison is found strangled behind her house, even Tony's closest friend, Sam Robb, suspects him. Alison's true killer is never found, and Tony flees his home town to forge a career as a high-powered, high-profile San Francisco criminal attorney and marries a a movie star. Cutting to the present day, Tony is called back to Lake City to defend his old friend. Sixteen-year-old track star Marcie Calder was found dead on the shore of Lake Erie, and Sam, now the overweight assistant principal and track coach of Lake City High, is the accused. A series of scandals slowly erodes Tony's confidence in Sam's innocence as Tony comes to terms with his own troubled past.

As with Patterson's previous work, Silent Witness is a novel with subtle characters who happen to be involved in a compelling (and authentic-seeming) criminal trial. For dedicated Patterson fans, some insight into the life of actress Stacey Tarrant is a special treat. She's Tony's wife in the present world of the novel but was the lover of Senator James Kilcannon before the senator was assassinated. James was the brother of Kerry Kilcannon, the enigmatic presidential candidate at the center of Patterson's 1998 blockbuster, No Safe Place. --Patrick O'Kelley

From Publishers Weekly
Like its predecessors, Patterson's latest novel (after The Final Judgment) evinces endless admiration for the ornateness of the law, and is crowded with complex characters whose troubles will draw readers deeply into their story. This hypnotic tale revolves around a friendship that begins on a high-school football field and is tested half a lifetime later in a Lake City, Ohio, courtroom. Tony Lord, a noted California criminal lawyer, returns to the home of his youth to defend his oldest friend, Sam Robb, against the charge of murdering his 16-year-old mistress. Lord takes the sordid case in part because his own life was nearly shattered when, as a teenager, he was suspected of murdering his own girlfriend. Because he wasn't formally charged, he was never "acquitted" by his neighbors of the brutal killing, which remains unsolved 28 years later. Lord isn't ready for the feelings that assault him in Lake City, or for the resurrection of memories both cherished and hated-like those of his brief affair with the cheerleader who became Sam Robb's wife, or of Sam's past questioning of Lord's innocence. Moving back and forth in time with metronomic patience, Patterson grants these two homicide cases an almost epic grandeur. He examines, in sometimes painful detail, the ways in which the friendships of youth can pass into personal mythology and skew adult judgment. But he is at his dramatic finest when, at last, he gives the emotions of these characters, who are connected by a lifetime of love and resentment, full reign in the courtroom. These are the scenes that his fans will anticipate most eagerly, and they are as explosive and revealing as anyone could wish. 400,000 first printing; Literary Guild main selection; simultaneous Random House Audio.

From Library Journal
As usual, Patterson delivers suspense for the new year. Boyhood friends Tony and Sam are torn apart when Sam is accused of murder. Years later, lawyer Tony returns home to defend Sam against similar charges.

A thoroughly enjoyable story by a master craftsman
By Gino Cox
This is the fourth book I've read by Richard North Patterson, following "Degree of Guilt," "Eyes of a Child" and "Final Judgment," all of which were very well written. With "Silent Witness," Patterson easily surpasses even the lofty expectations I developed based on the stories I had read earlier and joins Elizabeth George and Dorothy Sayers as one of my favorite mystery writers. The story is masterfully crafted, weaving two murder mysteries separated by nearly thirty years into a seamless web of intrigue, betrayal and misguided loyalties. It is reminiscent of "Lone Star" in rooting its two mysteries in the small town social fabric with conflicts between Catholics, protestants and Jews; and between blacks and whites. The characters evolve in very credible ways. One can see the teenagers we first meet in the middle-aged characters we later visit, with their basic traits sometimes mellowed, sometimes entrenched; with dreams shattered and realities acknowledged. The book actually begins slowly, unlike other Patterson novels which firmly hook the reader in the first three pages. I found the ending a little less than satisfactory. I correctly guessed the identity of the guilty party and expected another character to do the same. The ending was good, but more satisfying to one of the characters than to the reader. The book is a must read and a real page turner.

"SILENT WITNESS" A REAL WINNER!
By Michael Butts
Richard North Patterson continues his string of outstanding novels with this penetrating look at friendship, faith and love. Tony Lord, who we first met in "Private Screening" is the legal wizard who is called to his hometown after nearly three decades to defend his best friend of the murder of a sixteen year old girl. Tony himself left his hometown because he had been accused of murdering his girlfriend, Alison Taylor. Tony's guilt was never really clarified, because the only other person who could have murdered Alison was killed robbing a convenience store. We know Tony didn't kill Alison, but the townspeople believe he did.
So now his best friend (who also may have thought Tony was guilty) is facing similar charges, only he gets to go to trial with Tony as his lawyer.
A stunning novel, filled with secrets; heartbreaking scenarios that are so lifelike in their structure, you can't help but feel for those involved. The confrontational courtroom scenes, as always, are brilliant and riveting. The relationship between Tony and Sam is superbly etched; Tony's feelings about Sam's wife, Sue, are painstakingly real; the enigmatic Sam Robb is focal---is he capable of such a brutal murder; does he lie about everything? Is he really Tony's best friend? And is Tony justified in what he does to Ernie?
The novel cruises along with such intensity and fervor, one can't help but gasp in awe at its structure. The finale is devastating, although you can see it coming, you just don't want to admit it.
A brilliant, exceptional novel.
HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

They don't get any better
By Stan Vernooy
Tony Lord is a successful criminal defense attorney in San Francisco, married to an Oscar-winning actress and living the life of the rich and famous. But thirty years ago, as a high school senior in a small Ohio town, he was a suspect in the murder of his girlfriend. He was never formally charged, but many townspeople, including the dead girl's parents, were convinced of his guilt. He soon went away to college and never returned.
But now he has no choice. His old best friend Sam, the teammate who caught Tony's pass in the end zone in the final ten seconds of the biggest game of their high school careers, has been charged with murder. So Tony returns to his old home town to defend his friend.
Inevitably, Tony is forced to confront the prejudices and nightmares he thought he had escaped decades ago. His dead girlfriend's parents are still there, and still convinced of his guilt. Sam's wife Sue is another issue. She was Sam's girlfriend back in high school, but she and Tony slept together one night toward the very end of their senior year, and Sam has always been suspicious of the relationship between Tony and his wife.
By setting up the plot framework as he did, Patterson gave himself the opportunity for a richly textured exploration of some of humanity's most powerful emotions: love, jealousy, loyalty, and guilt. And he delivers the goods. The mystery element in this novel - although superb - is almost lost in the wonderfully evocative description of Tony Lord's struggle with his memories, loyalties, and relationships.
I have never read a Richard North Patterson novel before. But this work is so outstanding that he has immediately jumped to the top rank of my favorite mystery writers - a group that includes Elizabeth George, P D James, and Dennis Lehane.
This one is absolutely terrific.

More than the title implies
By Jean Leinhauser
This book offers far more than just another collecion of crochet stitches. It starts with an outstanding
section on basic to intermediate crochet techniques, well illustarted with good diagrams Then comes a collection of fun to make Irish crochet type designs with roses and leaves, followed by a good section on motifs worked in the round. A nice selection of textured stitches, many with variations, is given with both written and symbol instructions. Color blending is covered, a nice surprise, as well as a good coverage of surface crochet and free style. The publisher should have used a better title to describe the varied
contents of this book. Symbol diagrams are well done, color close-ups of stitches show lots of detail. There's a lot of bang for the buck in this volume, which has a hidden spiral binding, making it easy to use.

Triple Cross, by Mark Sullivan

"TRIPLE CROSS is a smart, prescient thriller that makes one wonder why the bottom really dropped out of the stock market.  The story snaps and twists like a cracking whip, you can't help but root for Mickey Hennessey and his kids, and I defy you to guess the ending.  Mark T. Sullivan has written a super-charged bestseller and surefire motion picture!" --Robert Crais

The Jefferson Club is a remote, private resort for the super-rich – the buildings, the amenities, and the security are state of the art and beyond compare.  Many of the world’s wealthiest people – business leaders, entrepreneurs, politicians, celebrities – gather for the most exclusive New Year’s Eve party in the world.  As expensive champagne flows and multibillion dollar deals are arranged, the unimaginable happens – a highly trained, heavily armed paramilitary force calling itself the Third Position Army breaches the world’s best security system and takes everybody hostage.

“Mickey” Hennessey, former U.S. Special Agent, is the head of security for the Jefferson Club.  A divorced father of three teenagers, he’s spending the holiday with his kids.  When the club is attacked, his entire team is wiped out and only he makes it out of the club alive.  Now he’s outside while his kids are trapped inside, hostages of the Third Position Army who are putting seven of the ten richest men on “trial” for their crimes against humanity, live on the internet for the world to see.  While a top FBI rescue team works feverishly to rescue all the hostages, Hennessey is determined to do all he can, to overcome  every obstacle, to ensure his children’s safety – or die trying.

From Publishers Weekly
Bestseller Sullivan's first thriller since 2003's The Serpent's Kiss displays his usual knack for setting and scenario. On New Year's Eve during a snowstorm, members of the Third Position Army, a group devoted to fighting corporate greed, seize the Jefferson Club, a twelve-thousand-acre ultra-private resort for the super-rich, in southwest Montana. General Anarchy, the group's leader, and his troops free most of the vacationers, but take the world's six richest men hostage and sequentially put them on trials broadcast over the Internet. Summary executions follow in most cases. The twist: the 14-year-old triplets of the club's security chief, Mickey Hennessy, manage to squirrel themselves away within the resort's back rooms and stealthily work to foil the terrorists. Vile villains, the inevitable romance and the children-in-peril dynamic move the plot efficiently if predictably toward the harrowing finale in the rugged wilderness. This is a solid return for Sullivan, but a place keeper at best. (Apr.)

From Booklist
New Year’s Eve finds half a dozen of the richest men in the world celebrating at the Jefferson Club, a spectacularly exclusive private club in the mountains of Montana. But the celebration is halted by a helicopter assault by the Third Position Army, a group that says it is revolting against “corporate tyranny.” Most of the guests are freed, but the financial barons are held for trial by a people’s court, and the trials are webcast live, as the FBI marshals a counter-terrorist force. But after the presentation of evidence at the trials, the world is invited to vote for guilt or innocence, and the “guilty” plutocrats are dispatched—on camera—in novel and grisly ways. Terrorism meets reality TV. Triple Cross is crisply written, breathlessly paced, suspenseful, and simultaneously fanciful yet nearly plausible. Sullivan may have telegraphed the big surprise ending a bit, but most readers will give him a pass because this is an almost-addictive page-turner. --Thomas Gaughan

Read this book.......

A great all around book!

I first came across "Triple Cross" through an email newsletter that has a list of upcoming release books. "Triple Cross" caught my eye and I picked it up the day it was available.

It's a thriller, thats written like a great action movie, with a great storyline, amazing characters and several plot twists that make for a non-stop read. This is one of those books, you won't want to put down.

The Jefferson Club, where the richest of the rich men come to relax & vacation. On this particular New Year's Eve, seven of the ten richest men are taken hostage by a heavily armed paramilitary eco-terrorist squad calling themselves "The Third Position Army", they plan to put the men on trial, one by one. They also plan to broadcast the trials through the internet and let the viewers vote. The main character, Mickey Hennessey is the Jefferson Club head security guard, a former Secret Service agent. After the initial attack on the club, Mickey Hennessey is trapped outside, wounded and his three triplets, Connor, Bridger & Hailey are stuck inside.

"Triple Cross" has a little bit of something for everyone. The story is intriguing and has alot of current / recent real events mixed into the story, including alot about fraudulent stock market trading.

I'd never heard of Mark T. Sullivan before this book, apparently his previous six books havent made a huge splash here in the states, but he's well known in Germany. After reading and thoroughly enjoying "Triple Cross", I plan to check out Mark's future books and a few of his previous novels!

It's a great read if you like thrillers, you won't be disappointed with this one and you might even learn something, I did!

Search the web for more information about the real Jefferson Club, actually called the Yellowstone Club near the Big Sky ski resort, Montana!

Triple Cross by Mark T. Sullivan
By Wendy L. Hines
The Jefferson Club is an exclusive club located in the Montana mountains. Everything is perfect, and security is top notch. It costs millions to stay at the Jefferson Club, and on this particular New Year's Eve, some of the richest men in the world are there, along with their wives and families.

When The Third Position Army, a group that fights corporate greed, infilitrate the supposed impenetrable Club, everyone is shocked. Head of Security, Mickey Hennessy, reformed alcoholic and drug addict, had just left dinner to remove himself from the wine sitting beside his plate. He is stunned to hear gun shots while out walking it off, and runs back to the lodge to help. But he is shot before he can get access, and immediately runs towards the road to get help. It's a parent's worst nightmare as his triplets are still inside the Club.

The Third Position Army demands 100 Billion from each player in the Club in exchange for their lives. After they all pay, General Anarchy, the leader, lets everyone go with the exception of the six richest men in the world. Everyone rushes outdoors to freedom, and the television crews go crazy as a well-known actress leads the crowds. They all relish in telling their story and are relieved to be free, but Mickey is stunned. His kids weren't in the released hostages and were still inside.

General Anarchy and his Army have trials for the six men with the people able to vote guilty or not guilty. They are broadcast over the internet, and punishment is immediate. The children search valiantly for their father in the Jefferson Club, but come up empty. They then try to find a way out of the Club, but the Third Position Army have it secured.

What follows are a series of events that will leave you stunned. An edge-of-your-seat thriller that is intense, fast-paced, and filled with characters that come alive off of the pages. I was captivated from page one and couldn't put it down. This is the first work of Mark T. Sullivan I have read, but I'm going to be looking for more of his work. A highly addictive reality thriller!

Triple Cross - Great book, impossible to put down
By Jason C. Dokken
I recently read Triple Cross and was engrossed by this book. Mark Sullivan has created a masterpiece - a book that is impossible to put down once you open and begin reading. I essentially read the book in 3 sittings - would have read it in one sitting if I weren't such a slow reader and busy with work.

The plot is complex, but understandable - and most importantly, the plot is plausible. The story that unfolds in Triple Cross has relevance in today's society - and digs into topics that affect everyone today - global finances, securities trading, greed, power-mongering, globalism, WTO, anti-WTO sentiment, terrorism - and how all these topics weave together and if not properly managed can lead to a disasterous situation for the United States and the world as we know it.

I think this book is perfect material for a major motion picture - would actually be surprised if that doesn't happen.

I loved this book and highly recommend it. Enjoy.

great purchase
By Kat5
The used text book came promptly and in excellent condition. There were no markings on the book. You could hardly tell it was used. The only thing wrong was it had a wrinkled title page. I was very pleased with my purchase.

Poorly organized

This book is poorly organized or basically the chapters are poorly organized. The sequence of the chapters should not be the way it is. Buy the Enduring Vision( an older edition past 2000) and AMSCO.

From School Library Journal
Adult/High School—Amigurumi, the Japanese art of crocheting small animals or toys, is currently popular, but as a textile art has been around since the 1950s. Most amigurumi are animals with proportionally large, round heads. This colorful and well-organized book includes an overview, an explanation of materials, a guide to reading patterns, and several pages of crochet techniques. For those with more experience, a section on designing animals from sketches is included. Fifteen patterns are offered with detailed instructions of varying degrees of complexity for items such as a pig, sausage dog, and monkey. Photos and drawings add additional support. A wonderful gallery of items made by a variety of creators appears at the end of the book. With at least three photos per page, this volume provides a host of ideas for those who want to pursue the art of amigurumi. There are many, many Web sites available with free patterns, but this book would be useful not only for beginners, but also for those who could use technique refreshers or who need to be inspired by the great variety of photographs of completed projects.—Jane Ritter, Mill Valley School District, CA

A good book for beginners and those interested in design
By Genevieve Hayes
"Amigurumi Animals" (titled "Crochet Animals" in the Australian edition and "Amigurumi" in the UK edition) is an excellent book for beginners with no experience in crochet. In this book, Annie Obaachan (who helped Rachel Matthews with her books "Knitorama" and "Hookorama"), provides patterns for making 15 simple Japanese-style crochet animals. Each animal is made out of simple shapes, such as spheres, eggs and sausages, which are among the simplest things to crochet, and instructions are given as both charts and in words. No prior knowledge of crochet is assumed and illustrated instructions are given of all crochet techniques. If I was teaching a child or young adult how to crochet, this would be the book that I would choose.

For more experienced crocheters, it is likely that the patterns in this book will prove to be overly simplistic. I consider myself to be an intermediate crocheter, and I felt that the patterns in this book weren't challenging enough and seemed to be a bit amateurish, too. However, for people such as myself, this book is not a complete waste of money. From my point of view, the best part about this book was a chapter on designing your own Japanese-style/amigurumi animals. This chapter is the sort of thing that I have been looking for for a long time. In the past, when I have wanted to design my own toys, I have taken existing patterns and made attempts (with varying levels of success) to adapt them to my needs. This book removes that necessity. It provides tips on the initial design process; instructions for making the components of the toys to your own measurements (that is, sausages, eggs, spheres etc); and advice on giving your animals facial expression. I also found the gallery of photographs of amigurumi animals, provided at the end of this book, to be inspiring.

useful simple guide
By M. Poller
I hesitated about ordering after reading the previous review. She was exactly right in her opinion. The toys look pretty simple and almost ugly and the yarns are very heavy compared to the other books I own on this topic. But the information on designing your own is not available elsewhere and makes the book worthwhile as does the gallery of other peoples' toys available online. Instructions are given in words and in charts using x's as in the Japanese books. Not a first purchase for this topic.

Don't buy it for the patterns
By sara
I own a few books now about amigurumi, and when I picked this one up, I definitely hesitated.

It is not a BAD pattern book. But I do not find the patterns in it particularly appealing. The colour and yarn choices, even the shape and style of some of the animals aren't my cup of tea when it comes to amigurumi. So I know that I will not be making a single one if these patterns, but the thing that makes this book worthwhile is, as others here have pointed out, the remainder of the book's features.

The section on planning and designing your own amigurumi, which I do, was pretty interesting. The rough drawings and eye/nose placement suggestions seemed very basic, but I can appreciate this would motivate some people into being inspired to design. When it comes to pattern books on this subject, I mainly look for inspiration, and I'd think this section would be helpful to some crocheters in this way.

The gallery at the back is really what inspired me the most in this book. A crocheted "Pac Man" and ghosts? Incredible. There are some examples of some very beautiful and creative amigurumi at the end of this book, which is why I ended up bringing it home. Was it worth the cover price for just this end section? Probably not, but I enjoy adding to my collection of knit/crochet books, and I know I will reference that back section.

I highly suggest you flip through it first and see if something in it appeals to you before buying. If it is patterns you are looking for, I do not think this book will prove as inspiring as others may to you. Take a look at it for its other features.
