About the Author
David Klass is the author of many young adult novels, including Dark Angel and You Don't Know Me. He is also a Hollywood screenwriter, having written more than twenty-five action screenplays, including Kiss the Girls, starring Morgan Freeman and Ashley Judd, Walking Tall, starring The Rock, and Desperate Measures, starring Michael Keaton and Andy Garcia. Klass grew up in a family that loved literature and theater―his parents were both college professors and writers―but he was a reluctant reader, preferring sports to books. But he started loving the adventure stories his parents would bring home from the library―particularly Jack London, Robert Louis Stevenson and Alexandre Dumas. After his sister twice won a story contest in Seventeen magazine, Klass decided he would win it too, and when he was a senior in high school, he did, publishing his first story, "Ringtoss," in the magazine. He studied at Yale University, where he won the Veech Award for Best Imaginative Writing. He taught English in Japan, and wrote his first novel, The Atami Dragons, about that experience. He now lives in New York with his wife and two small children.

Rough, wild, tense - but not as stirring as hoped for

Continuing in the manner of the triologie's first part, Klass shoves his main character into nearly nonstop action. But whereas there were new things to discover in the first book (new senses, new abilities, the glimpse at a future world), the second one seems to stick to running and being hunted for most of the time, which is definitely a weakness. It fails to arouse a gripping deepness, the 'something more than expected' part one finds in other books of Klass, like 'You don't know me', for instance.
All in all, it lacks a little substance.
Additionally, the insight into the personality of the main character is way less strong compared to part one. To give an example, the (parts of) poems casually garnishing Firestorm and thus lighting up another part of the character's (inner) life are sort of missing.

When Jack arrives home to try and explain his disappearance for the last six months to his girlfriend, he finds out that the Dark Army has beaten him there and has kidnapped her in an attempt to thwart his Earth-saving plans.
The police are blaming him for the disappearance and for the death of her parents, who died fighting this evil army from the future in the first book, FIRESTORM. With the help of a psychic, wisecracking dog named Gisco, Jack sets off in a hot air balloon for the Amazon rainforest, where legend has it that a time-traveling wizard lives who can help him defeat the Dark Army.
Will Jack find the wizard and his girlfriend? Will Jack defeat the Dark Army before they destroy Earth?
WHIRLWIND is a fast-paced, action-filled book. With each chapter ending in a cliffhanger and the stakes high for the book's well-developed main character, David Klass has done a great job of crafting this tale. Readers who enjoy adventure, science fiction, fantasy, and action will all enjoy reading this second book in THE CARETAKER TRILOGY.

Great for my son

My son read this and loved it. Big fan! He is nearly 11 and this was perfect for him. And anyone looking for Accelerated Reader points - here you go! 13 of those bad boys!
