CHAPTER ONE
When you have to kill the same terrorist twice in one week, then there’s either something wrong with your skills or something wrong with your world.
And there’s nothing wrong with my skills.
CHAPTER TWO
Ocean City, Maryland / Saturday, June 27; 10:22 am
They came for me at the beach. Nice and slick, two in front, one big cover-man behind in a three-point close while I was reaching for my car door. Nothing flashy, just three big guys in off-the-rack gray, all of them sweating in the Ocean City heat.
The pointman held up his hands in a no-problem gesture. It was a hot Saturday morning and I was in swim-trunks and a Hawaiian shirt with mermaids on it over a Tom Petty t-shirt. Flip-flops and Wayfarers. My piece was in a locked toolbox in the trunk, with a trigger guard clamped on it. I was at the beach to look at this year’s crop of sun-bunnies and I’d been off the clock since the shooting pending a Monday morning officer-involved discussion with the OIS team. It had been a bad scene at the warehouse and they’d put me on administrative leave to give me time to get my head straight about the shootings. I wasn’t expecting trouble, there shouldn’t have been trouble, and the smooth way these guys boxed me was designed to keep everyone’s emotions in neutral. I couldn’t have done it better myself.
"Mr. Ledger...?"
"Detective Ledger," I said to be pissy.
No trace of a smile on the point-guy’s face, only a millimeter of a nod. He had a head like a bucket.
"We’d like you to come with us," he said.
"Badge me or buzz off."
Bucket-head gave me the look, but he pulled out an FBI identification case and held it up. I stopped reading after the initials.
"What’s this about?"
"Would you come with us, please?"
"I’m off the clock, guys, what’s this about?"
No answer.
"Are you aware that I’m scheduled to start at Quantico in three weeks?"
No answer.
"You want me to follow you in my car?" Not that I wanted to try and give these fellows the slip, but my cell was in the glove box of the SUV and it would be nice to check in with the lieutenant on this one. It had a weird feel to it. Not exactly threatening, just weird.
"No, sir, we’ll bring you back here after."
"After what?"
No answer.
I looked at him and then the guy next to him. I could feel the cover-man behind me. They were big, they were nicely set –even with peripheral vision I could see that Bucket-head had his weight on the balls of his feet and evenly balanced. The other front-man was shifted to his right. He had big knuckles but his hands weren’t scarred. Probably boxing rather than martial arts; boxers wear gloves.
They were doing almost everything right except that they were a little too close to me. You should never get that close.
But they looked like the real deal. It’s hard to fake the FBI look.
"Okay," I said.
CHAPTER THREE
Ocean City, Maryland / Saturday, June 27; 10:31 am
Bucket-head sat beside me in the back and the other two sat up front, the cover-man driving the big government Crown Vic. For all the conversation going on the others might have been mimes. The air conditioner was turned up and the radio was turned off. Exciting.
"I hope we’re not going all the way the hell back to Baltimore." That was more than a three-hour ride and I had sand in my shorts.
"No." That was the only word Bucket-head said on the ride. I settled back to wait.
I could tell that he was a leftie from the bulge his shoulder rig made. He kept me on his right side, which meant that his coat flap would impede me grabbing his piece and he could use his right hand as a block to fend me off while he drew. It was professional and well thought out. I’d have done almost the same thing. What I wouldn’t have done, though, was hold onto the leather handstrap by the door like he was doing. It was the second small mistake he made and I had to wonder if he was testing me or whether there was a little gap between his training and his instincts.
I settled back and tried to understand this pick-up. If this had something to do with the action last week on the docks, if I was somehow in trouble for something related to that, then I sure as hell planned to lawyer up when we got wherever we were going. And I wanted a union rep there, too. No way this was SOP. Unless it was some Homeland thing, in which case I’d lawyer up and call my congressman. That warehouse thing was righteous and I wasn’t going to let anyone say different.
For the last eighteen months I’d been attached to one of those interjurisdictional taskforces that have popped up everywhere post 9/11. A few of us from Baltimore PD, some Philly and DC guys, and a mixed bag of Feds: FBI, NSA, ATF, and a few letter combinations I hadn’t seen before. Nobody really doing much but everyone wanting a finger in the pie in case something juicy happened, and by juicy I mean career beneficial.

Well written military thriller with a believable hero

Most military thrillers are long on action and short on soul, with the focus on the mission, the op, the team. Jonathan Maberry’s Joe Ledger novels, which begin with “Patient Zero”, cover these standard features very well, but Maberry adds something that Cussler, Coreia, Clancy and their ilk conspicuously lack: soul. Without making Joe Ledger a wimp of any kind, Maberry endows him with enough emotional damage to make him human, enough self-awareness to make him real. Ledger suffers from a traumatic adolescence that cost him his innocence, his girlfriend, and his faith in humanity, after a horrific incident that drove him into the military and later into the Baltimore PD. He’s not just a veteran of combat and a superb fighter, he’s also broken. And he knows it. And that’s why I like him. I don’t need men of chrome who spit out bullets and smile when they kill. I like a hero who knows it’s going to cost him part of his soul to do what he has to do, knows it will make him someone he can hardly stand to look at in the mirror, but he does it anyway because he knows there’s no one else. That’s a hero, and I like him. Maberry sets us up with an existential threat and then throws a mixed team at it under the shaky command of Joe Ledger. Then he writes the hell out of every fight scene and every command meeting. During the down times, he writes comedy that made me laugh out loud, as when Ledger speculates that, since bullets didn't kill his target, his only feasible upgrade is Kryptonite. This is a bang-up start to an exciting series, and I look forward to reading all of the Ledger novels.

Really fun read!!!

This was a well-written suspense story, with a lot of cool twists and turns. It was a zombie story, with a lot of great science. It was also a war story, with awesome battles and weapons and interesting spy-type technology. There was even a little romance thrown in! I loved it! It's the most fun I've had reading in a long time! I'm really looking forward to my next Joe Ledger novel!

Tighten Your Seatbelts Before Reading This Great New Thriller!!

Jonathan Maberry has created a great new action/thriller character, Joe Ledger, in his novel "Patient Zero". Ledger is a tough, intuitive Baltimore cop, a natural born leader of men who gets co-opted to lead a rapid response assault team for a secret government organization. The Department of Military Science (DMS) is a clandestine top secret government force designed to go beyond Homeland Security efforts to protect the US from bizarre and inexplicable terrorist attacks. The mysterious, enigmatic, and powerful Mr. Church enlists the reluctant Ledger to become a captain in his organization after watching him kill the same terrorist twice in a matter of days. The position ultimately appeals to the patriot and the warrior who make up a big part of who Joe Ledger is.
Joe and a hastily assembled team are thrust into immediate battles with the zombies (walkers) and their supporters. A brilliant mind in the Middle East has created a bio-weapon that turns ordinary people into ravenous, crazed zombies in an effort to ostensibly create social and financial terror in the US but perhaps with the real goal of destroying all infidels. Joe and his team must ferret out all the zombie "cells" already here and avert a catastrophe that could destroy all human life on the American continent.
While the major characters are fully fleshed by Maberry, most of the secondary players seem straight from central casting, including most of Joe's new "team". The pacing is brutal at times although the technique of using alternate chapters to flash back and forth from the US to the Middle East to provide more back story and real time action does lead, at times, to distraction.
While this is a rollicking, fast paced, violent and, often gory tale, it does call for a strong dose of suspension of disbelief from the interested reader. There is a great deal of Michael Crichton-like scientific discussion to explain the "prion" technology that is employed as a bio-weapon that turns people into highly infectious zombies. For me, a little of this scientific rambling seems to go a long way...less is more...but too much becomes distracting to the suspense. Also, the human versus zombie battles seem to go on forever at times prompting the question, "Is this fight going to end before I drop the book in breathless exhaustion?"
I will definitely read the next Joe Ledger novel should there be one. I expect there will be both because he is an exciting conflicted character and because the author left one thread unresolved in an obvious indication that a sequel is in the works. A great read both for fans of the zombie genre as well as fans of strong, likable hero-types thrust into a thrilling and suspense filled milieu.
