Adult/High School—Four-year-old Chiger thought of herself as a princess in her family's grand home in Lvov, Poland, in 1939. But things quickly changed as the Germans took all their belongings, their business, and their house, and moved them into one room in the ghetto. Finally, survival meant hiding for 14 months in the dark, slimy, airless sewers under the city. Leopold Socha, a sewer inspector, brought the family and 17 other people food, supplies, and news of the outside world, saving them and, he hoped, his soul as well. Although the survivors paid him, he continued to help them long after their money had run out. To keep warm, Chiger wore a green sweater knitted lovingly for her by her grandmother. The garment is now on display in the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, DC, along with her appalling story. The author writes with a compelling style that imparts the horrors of the sewer, the cruelty of the Gestapo, and the Russian "liberation." “I might have been only a child,” Chiger writes, “but what I saw, what I heard, what I experienced, has been reconsidered many times, and it is the accumulation of memories that now survive.” In 1943, the 150,000 Jews of Lvov, Poland, were sent into ghettos. Chiger, along with her parents and brother, hid in the sewers of Lvov for 14 months. Leopold Socha, a Polish Catholic, agreed to look after the family and brought them food and supplies. They sought sanctuary among the rats, the worms, the spiders, the filth, and were plagued by diarrhea, nausea, and disorientation. Chiger writes that sometimes it was the Germans who came looking for them and sometimes it was the Ukrainians, “who in many ways were worse.” The family survived and moved from Lvov to Krakow and then to Israel. The many customer reviews on THE GIRL WITH THE GREEN SWEATER reflect readers' impressions with the tribulations endured by Krystyna, a seven year old girl. They are touched profoundly by the indomitable spirit manifested by eleven people staying for fourteen months in a sewer. I am prompted to comment about Socha's characteristics and about his two coworkers, Wroblewski and Kowalow.

Leopold Socha was a ruffian. Most of his life, since adolescence, had been spent behind bars. When he met and married Wanda she convinced him to turn his life around. He had rediscovered his Catholic roots. He learned in the church that by helping others, you can help yourself. He came to believe that he might absolve himself of past sins by becoming a decent and a compassionate person.

When Socha had met Ignacy Chiger, Krystyna's father, along with several other persecuted Jews on their exploration into a sewer, he offered his help. The actual risk to Socha's life, as well as to the life of his two coworkers, outweighed the initial recompense from Chiger. Only the human kindness of those three men stood between them and certain death for the twenty two, which later dwindled to eleven, Jewish people. Socha and Wroblewski were crawling through the sewage, two kilometers each way, to bring food and other basic necessities to the people living in a dungeon. They provided the downtrodden with access to the outside world. Socha's wife, Wanda, who had no love for Jews, had tried incessantly to dissuade her husband's from helping them. Socha listened to the dictates of his heart and kept his loyalty to the persecuted Jews whose life depended on him. Socha even prepared shelters for them when the Russian liberators arrived. Socha was a wonderful human being, a righteous person among many wicked Nazis and their Ukrainian collaborators as well as some Polish sympathizers.

A German woman who risked her life to help me during the Holocaust, as narrated in my book "From A Name to A Number," is my heroine till the last day of my life. Now, so is Leopold Socha. Tragically, Socha was killed after the war in a traffic accident. I hope that God had rewarded Socha for his noble deeds.

THE GIRL WITH THE GREEN SWEATER is a truly amazing life story. It is heart-breaking, very informative and well written. Although I had personally experienced and witnessed atrocities committed by the Nazis, I find this book very informative and it enhances my knowledge about the Holocaust and its ramifications. Thanks Krystyna for writing this book.

amazing courage in the face of the SS Nazi's

This book was absolutly fantastic. It tells of the story of this families struggle with communist Russia and then the invasion of the German Nazi's in Poland.
The unbelievably cruel acts of the Germans and the SS black guards will break you heart.
She vividly recalls her possesions going to the germans, the lack of food, the hiding places her ingenius father made and the long hours of boredom and fear the family had to face.
When they are finally hunted down like rabbits they escape to the sewers of Lvov.
Dank, terrible and dark, they live in these sewers for over a year, aided by a kind benefactor, a catholic sewer worker.
This is a amazing tale of truth, fear and courage in the face of inbeatable odds.

About the Author

Tom Birchard has worked at Veselka since 1967 and assumed ownership from his father-in-law in 1975. Veselka has grown steadily since and has expanded several times. The restaurant now employs approximately seventy-five people and recently celebrated its fiftieth anniversary.

Natalie Danford has written about food, restaurants, and cookbooks for Fine Cooking, Eating Well, Health, Vegetarian Times, and many other publications. She is also the author of the critically acclaimed novel Inheritance, published by St. Martin's Press.

The Cookbook I've Been Waiting For...

If you live in New York City, Veselka'a is probably your best friend already; and if you don't, it's worth a trip to New York. The Borscht is the best, as are the pierogis, the soups, and also the tastiest burger. All the best recipes are in the cookbook. The ingredients are accessible and the recipes easy to follow. And if you read the stories as you go along, it's the next best thing to being there. If you love Ukranian food, American food, and good food in general, treat yourself and buy this book. Then buy another copy to give to your best friend who also loves good food. Now I'm waiting for the sequel...

The comfort foods of my childhood were pierogi, filled cabbage, kasha, varnishkas, and cabbage soup. My mother cooked without recipes and over the years some of my attempts to duplicate these foods have been successful, some not. Then my sister told me about Veselka and its cookbook. This tome is my call home to check on a recipe. It brings back memories of parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins and siblings gathered around long tables on Christmas or Easter, or around the kitchen table in my grandmother's kitchen. This food tastes like it does in my memory. A visit to Veselka is on the itinerary during a trip to New York City.

This cookbook definitely needs to be in the kitchen of anyone interested in Eastern European cooking.

To be savored

I loved this book. It wasn't a speed read, as one other reviewer indicated, but the care and craft exhibited throughout made it a truly pleasureful experience. I especially loved all the taxidermy technology that made its way into the book. I could almost smell the room.

An intersting read about a polygamous family.

It took me a long time to read this book and usually I am a fast reader. The main reason is the author is very detailed about the land, the clothes, and the minute details. I have a tendancy to like a more verbal interaction between main characters. This book seems like it has too many characters and all of them "seem" to be main. The only one that sticks out is Dorrie, the fourth wife. Actually, the best parts of the book to me were the past and present "stories" of the sister-wives. I wish the book would have just centered mainly on them instead of Hammer (husband), Bendy (ranch hand) and The Tracker (the indian hunter). The relationship between the first and third wives are captivating. I almost wanted to skip some of the pages just so I could get to Dorrie and the sister-wives stories. The only part that bothered me about the book was when Hammer went to get his fourth wife at the age of 14 mainly for her ability with taxidermy but had to have sex with her once "just to stake my claim". There are some books you can read over and over again and enjoy it each time. This book is not one of those--it is a ONCE IS ENOUGH read. of Over all it was an iteresting book to read but to me it seemed too long when the stories included anyone other that the women.

A dark and beautifully crafted novel

Effigy is a historical novel about a polygamous Mormon family living on a Utah farm during the nineteenth century. Although larger historical events play a role in the story (particularly the Mountain Meadows Massacre of 1857), the focus remains firmly on Erastus Hammer and his four wives. York creates distinct identities and voices for Erastus, each of his four wives, his eldest son, and two of the farm workers. As the story unfolds, the point of view shifts subtly from character to character, revealing to the reader the larger picture that is hidden from the individual characters. While nothing changes in the family's external world for the majority of the book, the inner turmoil revealed by the ever-shifting perspectives keeps the story moving. The only real action occurs at the very end of the book, but when it happens, it seems like the inevitable outcome of the combined forces and frictions built up over time. At its core, Effigy explores the link between actions and their consequences, hinting at a greater power that metes out deserved outcomes based on prior decisions.

York's prose is poetic and oblique, requiring careful attention to glean its full meaning. This passage, describing one the Tracker's perceived encounters with his dead wife, is indicative of York's complex style:
"She came to him for the first time then, his whirlwind wife, cool and drilling in the runnel of his spine. He knew her instantly, and the knowing nearly choked him with grief. Whether it was jealousy or something finer that had summoned her, the Tracker couldn't know. Sorrow, perhaps, or rage at having been forgotten, even for a moment, when she was barely six moons gone. He reached behind him with both hands to comfort her. Felt a shock like mountain runoff and then she was gone."

The above passage is written in the voice of the Tracker, a Native American employed by Erastus to help with hunting game for the family's table. Seemingly without effort, York employs a different voice for each of the eight primary characters. The below passage captures Erastus's voice, which is brasher and less sensitive than the Tracker's:
"He's a Missourian born and bred, the cruelest persecutors of God's people thus far. Never mind how he hated that river-soaked swatch of land. Not the river itself, though, the silty Grand muscling its way through his childhood, calling out to him from its catfishy snags. He only rarely penetrated its depths. He was too busy coughing up yellow batter in the Hammer Gristmill, or getting bitten raw by mosquitoes when he was lucky enough to work outside."

York masterfully weaves these diverse voices and plot lines together to create a dark and beautifully crafted novel.

AS MUCH as Trey tried to remain professional, from time to time his libido got the best of him. As the owner of the Black Door, an erotic club catering to the sexual desires of women, he seemed to be hard on a regular basis. He had been a good boy lately, but tonight he was feeling extremely horny. He hadn’t been laid in weeks. His girlfriend, Michele Richards, had relocated to Washington for professional reasons. In the beginning they saw each other every weekend; either he went to D.C. or she came to New York, but lately their passion had begun to wane. They were both busy with their respective careers, and unfortunately their love life suffered as a result. He tried to ignore the throbbing bulge in his jeans and concentrate on work, but was having a difficult time staying focused. Trey used every ounce of discipline he had to check the vendor invoices and write out the payments that he owed. He was signing his name to the bottom of the fifth check when the office phone rang.

“Trey Curtis speaking,“ he answered with an air of authority.

“Hey, sexy,“ whispered a seductive-sounding female voice on the other end.

Trey couldn’t help but blush from the compliment. “Who’s this?”

“Someone who’s been wanting to fuck you for a long, long time.”

His dick began to twitch as he listened to her confession. “Is that a fact?” he said nonchalantly.

“Yes, sexy, that’s a fact. So...are you still drop-dead gorgeous?”

Trey chuckled at the overused line. “Well, I don’t see any bodies lying on the ground, so I guess it’s a matter of opinion,“ he said with a cocky assurance to his tone.

She still hadn’t revealed her identity and now he was really intrigued. Obviously it was someone who knew him, but wanted to get to know him better. “Are you going to tell me your name now or after you find out what makes me tick?” he asked, toying with her.

“It’s Lexi, Lexington Samuels. We met last year when I joined the club, and again at the grand opening of Hirschfield Multimedia Studios. I gave you my number that night; remember?”

Trey definitely remembered the beautiful Lexi. She was tall and lean with a nice rack. He flashed back to the night of the opening and remembered how Lexi’s black, form-fitting dress hugged her slim hips and dipped low in the front, exposing just enough cleavage to entice any man. Her hair was cut close, and was highlighted to match her caramel complexion. “Yes, I remember.” He smiled. Though she was supermodel gorgeous, he wasn’t interested in pursuing her. His untimely affair with another member of the club was still fresh, and at the time his wounds had yet to heal.

“Well, since Muhammad didn’t come to the mountain, the mountain has come to Muhammad,“ she said. “I’m downstairs.”

“You’re here at the Black Door?” he asked, slightly surprised. It had been a little over a year since his last indiscretion and thankfully his wounds had totally scabbed over. Hearing the sound of Lexi’s sexy voice was piquing his interest. Besides, his girlfriend was safely away in another city, and what she didn’t know wouldn’t hurt.

“Yep. I’m calling from my cell phone. I got your office number from information. Why don’t you come down and have a drink with me? I’m in the Leopard Lounge. I’ll be the woman in the pink mask with silver rhinestones around the eyes.”

“I don’t think so,“ he said, trying to ignore his rising erection. He’d made a promise not to fuck around with the clients anymore, but the wicked voice in his left ear kept saying, Why not? Michele will never know.

“Aw, come on, sexy, don’t be a spoilsport. It’s just a drink, and if you’re good, maybe I’ll let you take me to one of the private booths in the back of the lounge so I can whisper nasty sexual positions in your ear.” Lexi was a relentless temptress, saying all the right words, breaking down Trey’s resolve. She had desired him from the first moment she laid eyes on him, and though it had taken her a year to have a conversation with him, she was still determined to win him over.

He looked at the invoices and checks on his desk and thought, Fuck it, it’s just a drink. “Give me a few minutes and I’ll be down.”

After hanging up the phone, Trey crossed the office to his private bathroom. He changed from a white oxford shirt into his signature black wife beater, and kept on his bulge-hugging jeans. He opened one of the bureau drawers to his left, took out his black leather, onyx embellished mask and strapped it on. He abandoned the paperwork on his desk and headed out of the office.

The second floor of the Black Door was bathed in soothing indigo lighting. Trey strutted down the long hallway like a panther en route to slay his prey. As he made his way toward the Leopard Lounge, he caught sight of a statuesque woman wearing a red negligee and a familiar looking red mask. He squinted his eyes against the dim lighting, trying to get a better view. No, it can’t be her, he thought.

The last time he’d seen that red patent-leather mask was when it concealed the face of Ariel Vaughn, his father’s then fiancée, as he fucked her into another realm of ecstasy. At the time he had no clue that he was coveting his father’s woman. Life could be cruel; just when he thought he had found “the one,“ she turned out to be someone else’s “one.” Trey had put Ariel out of his mind, not because he wanted to, but because he had to. She was now married to his father, and strictly off limits. He knew that “man law” totally forbade him from looking at her lustfully anymore, but deep down inside, he still desired her, and he felt like a Judas every time those thoughts entered his head.

The woman in red retreated into another chamber of the club, and out of an animalistic instinct, he followed closely behind. When he was within touching distance, he reached out and gently put his hand on her shoulder. The moment she turned around to face him, his heart caught in his throat. He opened his mouth to speak, but was speechless....

intriguing entry

Newlywed and recently appointed to the Supreme Court Justice Preston Hendricks still recovers from the stroke he suffered as his memory of the seventy two hours prior to his illness has not yet returned. His wife, Yates Gilchrist partner attorney Ariel Vaughn and his son New York BLACK DOOR erotic club owner Trey Curtis worry if he does. They had a heated tryst before knowing who the other was and each still wants more; in fact it was a drunken Ariel mumbling about f-ing with Trey just before Preston collapsed from his stroke.

Desiring to move amidst the DC A list of celebs, Preston's assistant Michele Richards plots to replace Ariel as her boss' wife though she would not mind a tryst with Trey. Married sexagenarian Congressman Laird Forester also wants to make it with Michele. Meanwhile Trey and Ariel still want each other, but feel guilt as he knows better than to violate the "Man Law" especially with his father as the victim and she loves her spouse and not wanting to hurt him; Preston believes his wife is cheating so he considers an affair with Michele.

The third Black Door contemporary tale (see SEDUCTION) is an intriguing entry as the prime players come across as fully developed with flaws that will have readers waiting for a Shakespeare (or at least Peyton Place) tragedy to occur. The story line is driven by the cast; all selfish in some way, as each seeks sexual satisfaction. Soap operatic in design, BETRAYAL is an enjoyable novel that stands alone; but to better understand the history even as Velvet cleverly works in the past into this complicated plot, fans should read the previous two books.

Velvet's third installment of the Black Door series was a slow read. Recovered stroke victim Preston is starting to get his memory back regarding his wife and son's betrayal. But that doesn't happened until you're hundred pages into the book. In the meantime Trey's relationship with scheming vixen Michele is hanging by a string, Ariel is torn between father and son and yes, some hot and steamy sex occur coupled with surprise re-appearance from past characters. by the end of the story several more would be betrayed leaving you with a juicy cliffhanger. You can clearly see where the author is going with this read, can't stop won't stop until Ariel and Trey are together.

There was no need to end this story this way. If I want a good cry, I will read an aga saga. These characters deserved a better ending.

The setting is remote, Fair Isle a rocky stretch of land in the Shetland Islands, where avid birdwatchers and naturalists gather. Angela Moore, warden of the Fair Isle field centre, is married to the much older Maurice Parry, a spouse who heartily supports his wife's stellar accomplishments. Angela is quite a celebrity in this rarified world, with a best-selling book and frequent appearances on television as an expert in her field. Beautiful and ambitious, Angela demands perfection from those who inhabit her kingdom, indulging in small cruelties when it pleases her. The Fair Isle field centre is a serious enterprise, but filled with the sounds of celebration at the engagement party of local Jimmy Perez, a detective, and his fiancé, Fran. Taking a break from work, Jimmy introduces Fran to his parents, proud of the talented and witty artist with whom he has fallen in love.

The engagement party is a welcome diversion from petty competition among birdwatchers, but the festivities end abruptly with the discovery of a murder. As a storm rages, access to the island is cut off, Perez the only law enforcement official available. Until facts prove otherwise, the detective must consider everyone a suspect. Fair Isle is the lair of dedicated birdwatchers and naturalists: "They're all obsessive, these birdwatchers. They come across an area of research and dig away at it." Passion runs deep with this group, secrets buried under the guise of common interests, one of them driven to murder. The relative quiet of the naturalists' pursuits shattered by unexpected bursts of violence, Perez longs for a few hours of seclusion with his fiancé, ordered to lead the investigation until backup arrives.

Jimmy's one-on-one interviews expose the cracks in Angela's stellar reputation, the number of potential suspects increasing exponentially. Fran's uncomplicated support is the only relief for the beleaguered Jimmy. In an absolutely stunning denouement, no one is completely innocent, not even Perez, as facts collide, a ruthless killer revealed. While I might have wished for a glossary of common terms for birdwatchers, there was no escaping the author's deft exploration of the duplicity of human nature and the deadly seeds of revenge. Cleeves chickens out

Ann Cleeves series of mysteries set in the Shetland Islands has been compelling, full of the unique environs of these remote islands and filled with complex, interesting and believable characters. Throughout the series, we see the development of the relationship between Jimmy Perez, the detective central to the series, and artist Fran Hunter at the same time that we watch Perez working to solve crimes which are complicated enough to be interesting without becoming, as happens in a lot of contemporary mysteries,far-fetched.
However, in "Blue Lightning," it's as if Cleeves' intellectual/imaginative courage fails her and she cannot determine a way for the couple to move from fiance and fiancee into a future together. The book's conclusion, not in the solving of the murders but in what happens to Perez and Hunter, is not only hugely disappointing but completely unnecessary -- I expected better from this writer.

CHAPTER ONE

When you have to kill the same terrorist twice in one week, then there’s either something wrong with your skills or something wrong with your world.

And there’s nothing wrong with my skills.

CHAPTER TWO

Ocean City, Maryland / Saturday, June 27; 10:22 am

They came for me at the beach. Nice and slick, two in front, one big cover-man behind in a three-point close while I was reaching for my car door. Nothing flashy, just three big guys in off-the-rack gray, all of them sweating in the Ocean City heat.

The pointman held up his hands in a no-problem gesture. It was a hot Saturday morning and I was in swim-trunks and a Hawaiian shirt with mermaids on it over a Tom Petty t-shirt. Flip-flops and Wayfarers. My piece was in a locked toolbox in the trunk, with a trigger guard clamped on it. I was at the beach to look at this year’s crop of sun-bunnies and I’d been off the clock since the shooting pending a Monday morning officer-involved discussion with the OIS team. It had been a bad scene at the warehouse and they’d put me on administrative leave to give me time to get my head straight about the shootings. I wasn’t expecting trouble, there shouldn’t have been trouble, and the smooth way these guys boxed me was designed to keep everyone’s emotions in neutral. I couldn’t have done it better myself.

"Mr. Ledger...?"

"Detective Ledger," I said to be pissy.

No trace of a smile on the point-guy’s face, only a millimeter of a nod. He had a head like a bucket.

"We’d like you to come with us," he said.

"Badge me or buzz off."

Bucket-head gave me the look, but he pulled out an FBI identification case and held it up. I stopped reading after the initials.

"What’s this about?"

"Would you come with us, please?"

"I’m off the clock, guys, what’s this about?"

No answer.

"Are you aware that I’m scheduled to start at Quantico in three weeks?"

No answer.

"You want me to follow you in my car?" Not that I wanted to try and give these fellows the slip, but my cell was in the glove box of the SUV and it would be nice to check in with the lieutenant on this one. It had a weird feel to it. Not exactly threatening, just weird.

"No, sir, we’ll bring you back here after."

"After what?"

No answer.

I looked at him and then the guy next to him. I could feel the cover-man behind me. They were big, they were nicely set –even with peripheral vision I could see that Bucket-head had his weight on the balls of his feet and evenly balanced. The other front-man was shifted to his right. He had big knuckles but his hands weren’t scarred. Probably boxing rather than martial arts; boxers wear gloves.

They were doing almost everything right except that they were a little too close to me. You should never get that close.

But they looked like the real deal. It’s hard to fake the FBI look.

"Okay," I said.

CHAPTER THREE

Ocean City, Maryland / Saturday, June 27; 10:31 am

Bucket-head sat beside me in the back and the other two sat up front, the cover-man driving the big government Crown Vic. For all the conversation going on the others might have been mimes. The air conditioner was turned up and the radio was turned off. Exciting.

"I hope we’re not going all the way the hell back to Baltimore." That was more than a three-hour ride and I had sand in my shorts.

"No." That was the only word Bucket-head said on the ride. I settled back to wait.

I could tell that he was a leftie from the bulge his shoulder rig made. He kept me on his right side, which meant that his coat flap would impede me grabbing his piece and he could use his right hand as a block to fend me off while he drew. It was professional and well thought out. I’d have done almost the same thing. What I wouldn’t have done, though, was hold onto the leather handstrap by the door like he was doing. It was the second small mistake he made and I had to wonder if he was testing me or whether there was a little gap between his training and his instincts.

I settled back and tried to understand this pick-up. If this had something to do with the action last week on the docks, if I was somehow in trouble for something related to that, then I sure as hell planned to lawyer up when we got wherever we were going. And I wanted a union rep there, too. No way this was SOP. Unless it was some Homeland thing, in which case I’d lawyer up and call my congressman. That warehouse thing was righteous and I wasn’t going to let anyone say different.

For the last eighteen months I’d been attached to one of those interjurisdictional taskforces that have popped up everywhere post 9/11. A few of us from Baltimore PD, some Philly and DC guys, and a mixed bag of Feds: FBI, NSA, ATF, and a few letter combinations I hadn’t seen before. Nobody really doing much but everyone wanting a finger in the pie in case something juicy happened, and by juicy I mean career beneficial.

Well written military thriller with a believable hero

Most military thrillers are long on action and short on soul, with the focus on the mission, the op, the team. Jonathan Maberry’s Joe Ledger novels, which begin with “Patient Zero”, cover these standard features very well, but Maberry adds something that Cussler, Coreia, Clancy and their ilk conspicuously lack: soul. Without making Joe Ledger a wimp of any kind, Maberry endows him with enough emotional damage to make him human, enough self-awareness to make him real. Ledger suffers from a traumatic adolescence that cost him his innocence, his girlfriend, and his faith in humanity, after a horrific incident that drove him into the military and later into the Baltimore PD. He’s not just a veteran of combat and a superb fighter, he’s also broken. And he knows it. And that’s why I like him. I don’t need men of chrome who spit out bullets and smile when they kill. I like a hero who knows it’s going to cost him part of his soul to do what he has to do, knows it will make him someone he can hardly stand to look at in the mirror, but he does it anyway because he knows there’s no one else. That’s a hero, and I like him. Maberry sets us up with an existential threat and then throws a mixed team at it under the shaky command of Joe Ledger. Then he writes the hell out of every fight scene and every command meeting. During the down times, he writes comedy that made me laugh out loud, as when Ledger speculates that, since bullets didn't kill his target, his only feasible upgrade is Kryptonite. This is a bang-up start to an exciting series, and I look forward to reading all of the Ledger novels.

Really fun read!!!

This was a well-written suspense story, with a lot of cool twists and turns. It was a zombie story, with a lot of great science. It was also a war story, with awesome battles and weapons and interesting spy-type technology. There was even a little romance thrown in! I loved it! It's the most fun I've had reading in a long time! I'm really looking forward to my next Joe Ledger novel!

Tighten Your Seatbelts Before Reading This Great New Thriller!!

Jonathan Maberry has created a great new action/thriller character, Joe Ledger, in his novel "Patient Zero". Ledger is a tough, intuitive Baltimore cop, a natural born leader of men who gets co-opted to lead a rapid response assault team for a secret government organization. The Department of Military Science (DMS) is a clandestine top secret government force designed to go beyond Homeland Security efforts to protect the US from bizarre and inexplicable terrorist attacks. The mysterious, enigmatic, and powerful Mr. Church enlists the reluctant Ledger to become a captain in his organization after watching him kill the same terrorist twice in a matter of days. The position ultimately appeals to the patriot and the warrior who make up a big part of who Joe Ledger is.

Joe and a hastily assembled team are thrust into immediate battles with the zombies (walkers) and their supporters. A brilliant mind in the Middle East has created a bio-weapon that turns ordinary people into ravenous, crazed zombies in an effort to ostensibly create social and financial terror in the US but perhaps with the real goal of destroying all infidels. Joe and his team must ferret out all the zombie "cells" already here and avert a catastrophe that could destroy all human life on the American continent.

While the major characters are fully fleshed by Maberry, most of the secondary players seem straight from central casting, including most of Joe's new "team". The pacing is brutal at times although the technique of using alternate chapters to flash back and forth from the US to the Middle East to provide more back story and real time action does lead, at times, to distraction.

While this is a rollicking, fast paced, violent and, often gory tale, it does call for a strong dose of suspension of disbelief from the interested reader. There is a great deal of Michael Crichton-like scientific discussion to explain the "prion" technology that is employed as a bio-weapon that turns people into highly infectious zombies. For me, a little of this scientific rambling seems to go a long way...less is more...but too much becomes distracting to the suspense. Also, the human versus zombie battles seem to go on forever at times prompting the question, "Is this fight going to end before I drop the book in breathless exhaustion?"

I will definitely read the next Joe Ledger novel should there be one. I expect there will be both because he is an exciting conflicted character and because the author left one thread unresolved in an obvious indication that a sequel is in the works. A great read both for fans of the zombie genre as well as fans of strong, likable hero-types thrust into a thrilling and suspense filled milieu.
