The Rosewood Casket: A Ballad Novel (Ballad Novels), by Sharyn McCrumb

"Eloquent, lyrical, and richly textured . . . There is no one quite like [McCrumb] among present-day writers. No one better either." ―San Diego Union-Tribune

With a career spanning decades, and superlatives from reviewers nationwide--whose bestselling novels have been named Notable Books by the New York Times and the LA Times--this is one of Sharyn McCrumb's most cherished novels.

The stage is set for family drama when Randall Stargill lies dying on his southern Appalachian farm, and his four sons come home to build him a coffin made from the special cache of rosewood he has saved for this purpose. Meanwhile, mountain wisewoman, Nora Bonesteel, prepares another box―to be buried with him. Among them, a real estate developer is hovering over the family's farm bringing secrets and tensions to the surface.

In a style both lyrical and beautifully detailed, with a narrative that flows from Native American lore and the burnished tales of Daniel Boone―up to the sharpest, and keenly realized landscapes of Appalachia today, The Rosewood Casket is a novel as hauntingly beautiful as the mountains that gave it charge--and a stunning addition to our collection of McCrumb Ballad novels.

Sharon Mc Crumb's Rosewood Casket is fast paced and totally enjoyable. The authentic storyline blends strong characters with mountain legend producing an amazing plot. The characters are richly entrenched in their mountain heritage, yet struggling to maintain their escape from it.

The Hills are Alive with the Ballads of McCrumb
By William P. Finnin
Again, the author pens a compelling, interwoven tale of Appalachian life. Her characters are real, their motives honest and their fates - fitting. McCrumb is a master at what she does - story telling. May her tales never end.

Sharyn McCrumb is one of my favorite writers. I have read almost all of her Ballad books, some twice. The Rosewood Casket is absolutely excellent. She is a great historical fiction writer; I trust her research. Can't recommend her books enough! My absolute favorite is She Walks These Hills, the first of her books I read. I've read it twice and am about to read it again. A wonderful, wonderful story.

Diaries 1969-1979: The Python Years (Michael Palin Diaries), by Michael Palin

The amazingly insightful, funny and brilliant record of Michael Palin's prime years as a member of the famed comedic group, Monty Python.

Michael Palin has kept a diary since newly married in the late 1960s. This volume of his diaries reveals how Python emerged and triumphed, how he, John Cleese, Graham Chapman, the two Terrys---Jones and Gilliam---and Eric Idle came together and changed the face of British comedy.

But this is but only part of Palin's story. Here is his growing family, his home in a north London Victorian terrace, which grows as he buys the house next door and then a second at the bottom of the garden; here, too, is his solo effort---as an actor, in Three Men in a Boat, his writing endeavours (often in partnership with Terry Jones) that produces Ripping Yarns and even a pantomime.

Meanwhile Monty Python refuses to go away: the hugely successful movies that follow the TV (his account of the making of both The Holy Grail and the Life of Brian movies are page-turners), the at times extraordinary goings-on of the many powerful personalities who coalesced to form the Python team, the fight to prevent an American TV network from bleeping out the best jokes on U.S. transmission, and much more---all this makes for funny and riveting reading.

The birth and childhood of his three children, his father's growing disability, learning to cope as a young man with celebrity, his friendship with George Harrison, and all the trials of a peripatetic life are also essential ingredients of these diaries. A perceptive and funny chronicle, the diaries are a rich portrait of a fascinating period.

"A wealth of fascinating stuff about Monty Python."

From Publishers Weekly
As one of the six Pythons to have assembled back in the late 1960s, Palin provides insights into the group's dynamics during the decade that brought the Monty Python troupe to international acclaim. This abridgment can be satiating and frustrating, often simultaneously. At face value, it provides many behind-the-scenes moments and explores how and why the comedy troupe went about its business. Yet the mere knowledge that it's an abridgment will have listeners yearning to hear more—especially Python-quoting fans. The short, occasionally abrupt entries feel authentic, as journal entries can often be a mere few sentences. But listeners may constantly question how much has been trimmed. Occasionally, the journal entries read as a mere chronological list of events. As narrator, Palin proves adept at adding life and emotion in his mild-mannered voice to the more pedantic lulls in the audiobook. But given the audiobook's shortcomings, a bonus interview or some other material might have improved the overall enjoyment for listeners.

His showbiz observations are so absorbing ... Palin is an elegant and engaging writer GUARDIAN Accomplished ... If Palin's comic genius is a given, this is a more rounded portrait of the decade which saw the Pythons become icons. Our favourite TV explorer shows us the workings of an unstoppable machine DAILY EXPRESS Palin's style is so fluid, and his sincerity so palpable, that it is often easy to underestimate just how talented he is as a comedian, broadcaster and a writer ... [the diaries] are just too good and he is too modest SUNDAY EXPRESS Delightful and often extraordinarily funny ... An entertaining and at times deeply moving read MAIL ON SUNDAY If anyone writes a diary purely for the joy of it, it is Michael Palin ... This combination of niceness, with his natural volubility, creates Palin's expansiveness THE TIMES Palin's steady eye, contemplative bent and instinct for honest appraisal make him the perfect chronicler of a frequently insane period which saw the Monty Python team become the most celebrated comedians in the world TIME OUT A real delight to read SAGA MAGAZINE A slow burn, revealing its pleasures only gradually, and allowing readers the warm glow of hindsight denied its writer ... Awesome book - but don't get the Kindle version
By Amazon Customer
To be quite honest, I got this on a whim. I was never a huge Python fan, but I have liked Michael Palin's journey series' and thought I would like his humor. I figured it would also give me a "behind the scenes" view of one of the largest comedy moneymakers in history.

I was caught up as much with his family life and watching his children grow up as I was with the spats and tirades from the Python members. I cried when his father slowly faded away, just like my grandmother did. I laughed at the antics of his children, very close in age to myself, doing many of the same things I did, half the world away.

I enjoyed the book immensely, but I have a caviat. I bought it as a Kindle download. I didn't realize that the Kindle version would not include the pictures that were included in the actual book. I know Kindle is black and white, and I would have had no problem with seeing them as such, but there was only one small picture of Michael as a child, and that was it. No other pictures were on the Kindle, no other pictures were available from Amazon. I paid a lot of money for this book, and was very disappointed that I could not FULLY enjoy it. I enjoyed the book, and remembered many of the pictures and scenes that he talked about, but I would really have liked to SEE his children grow up. I would have liked to SEE a picture of his wife. THat's why the pictures were included in the book in the first place.

Buy the book. Enjoy the book. Just don't get the Kindle version.

The Seventies according to Palin
By Robin Cramp
What a nice man! Michael Palin's diary of Seventies Britain Diaries 1969-1979: The Python Yearsshows that you don't have to be weird or "out there" or even arrogant to create the kind of ground-breaking humor that was Monty Python's Flying Circus. They certainly needed the comic genius of John Cleese to make it come to life, but it is clear that Michael Palin and Terry Jones did much of the writing and then the general tidying up afterwards that made Python at once gloriously offensive and yet globally marketable.

Palin's honest yet self-effacing notes on his life during the 1970's include lots of interesting out-takes on Python writing and performance for Python aficionados, but his attendance to his aging parents and his thoughtful asides on a critical decade in British politics show an Everyman that contrasts wildly with the lunacy of Python. Maybe that's why Python became a global experience - because it connected us to that silly streak we all have inside but seldom allow to show, in a decade when so many accepted social mores were being overturned.

For those of us that lived through that decade (I am English and two months younger than Palin) this is an entertaining and absorbing social history which will make you think "maybe if I had just had the right friends?".

Palin makes you feel at home.
By Jeffrey C. Mendel
This is a great book by Michael Palin. I felt as if he was talking to me as we were taking a walk on a nice day. There's all the history here of the Monty Python's and their film's. His times with George Harrison and much more. He's a great writer as those of you know who have enjoyed all of his travel books and shows. This book takes you up to 1979 the Python years and I hope there's not a long wait for the next book.

The Jungle (Bedford Cultural Editions Series), by Upton Sinclair

Upton Sinclair’s novel The Jungle, which inspired passage in 1906 of the Pure Food and Drug Act and the Meat Inspection Act, stands as a classic of twentieth-century American literature and social protest. In this accessible and thorough edition by Christopher Phelps, a critical introduction addresses the wide range of issues raised by the text, including early twentieth-century working conditions, immigrant community, race and gender, political reform, and the continuing relevance of Sinclair’s investigation. This edition uses the most widely recognized text of The Jungle — the Doubleday, Page edition published in 1906 — and provides an illuminating supporting document: President Theodore Roosevelt’s delivery to Congress of the official report that confirmed The Jungle’s shocking allegations about the Chicago meatpacking industry. Questions for consideration, a chronology, and a selected bibliography help contextualize Sinclair’s novel and provide students with resources for further study.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. Originally published in 1991 as part of a short-lived revival of the Classics Illustrated line, this adaptation of Sinclair's muckraking socialist novel succeeds because of its powerful images. When Kuper initially drew it, he was already a well-known left-wing comics artist. His unenviable task is condensing a 400-page novel into a mere 48 pages, and, inevitably, much of the narrative drama is lost. Kuper replaces it, however, with unmatched pictorial drama. The story follows Lithuanian immigrant Jurgis Rudkis and his family as they are eaten up and spit out by capitalism (represented by Chicago's packing houses). Kuper uses an innovative full-color stencil technique with the immediacy of graffiti to give Sinclair's story new life. When Jurgis is jailed for beating the rich rapist Connor, a series of panels suffused with a dull, red glow draw readers closer and closer to Jurgis's face, until they see that the glint in his eye is fire. Jurgis, briefly prosperous as a strong-arm man for the Democratic machine, smokes a cigar; the smoke forms an image of his dead son and evicted family. Perhaps most visually dazzling is the cubist riot as strikers battle police amid escaping cattle. Kuper infuses this 1906 novel with the energy of 1980s-era street art and with his own profoundly original graphic innovation, making it a classic in its own right.

From School Library Journal
Grade 10 Up–In 1906, Sinclair published The Jungle, a realistic and scathing portrayal of the life of an immigrant worker. Kuper's revised adaptation focuses solely on its hero, Jurgis Rudkus. Readers follow him from his emigration from Lithuania to downtown Chicago, eager to find the American Dream he's heard so much about. But the harsh world of Chi-town quickly shatters his hopes; forced to take a job at a slaughterhouse, he performs the most menial and vile tasks. An injury pushes him to unemployment and, unable to provide for them, he leaves his family in shame. Rudkus transforms from a starry-eyed dreamer into a cynical but valiant man who fights for workers' rights. Kuper's artwork effectively mimics some of the major art movements of the day. The book opens in a Chagall-inflected form of cubism, lending a folksy, dreamy, and hopeful quality to the early pages. Then, the visuals become increasingly jagged and frenetic until they reach the Futurist-inspired panels that illustrate the story's climax. Well-plotted and beautifully illustrated, Kuper's adaptation breathes new life into this classic American story.–Matthew L. Moffett, Northern Virginia Community College, Annandale

From Booklist
The biographical sketch at the end of Kuper's visualization of the most famous muckraking novel says that it was intended not as an expose of the meatpacking industry but as a pitch for socialism. Kuper and coadapter Russell restore Sinclair's original intent by concentrating on the odyssey, from green Lithuanian immigrant to horribly saddened but finally wiser nascent Socialist Party member, of the book's protagonist, Jurgis Rudkus. It is a story of the highest possible pathos. Jurgis is a working-class Job and worse, for he loses almost everyone he loves to the grinding jaws of industrial capitalism (the coup de grace comes when his dead wife's little brother is eaten by rats) and becomes a strikebreaker and ward heeler before he absolutely bottoms out. Grimmer than Dickens' books, Sinclair's agitprop classic seems tailor-made for Kuper's spectacular color artwork, in which Chagall's buoyant Old World fantasias meet the intense expressionism of Munch and, above all, the cubist-derived constructivism of early Soviet poster art, with a smidgen or two of 1920s German cinema in the compositions. In the jungle
By Marcus A. Lewis
We last saw Chairman of the Board Juan Cabrillo in "The Silent Sea" (3/10), as he was trekking across the frozen wastes of the antarctic. He had become separated from the crew of the "Oregon" and believed dead. The Chairman and his motley crew are all together again in the latest collaboration from Clive Cussler and Jack Du Brul.

"The Jungle" begins with one of the better Prologues of a Cussler novel in some time. Set in Eastern China, 1281 A.D. We are eyewitnesses to the battle tactics of General Khenbish, who is in the employ of the great Khan. We learn the history of the three tents that precede each battle; and the first known uses of lasers and dynamite on the battlefield. A walled village is obliterated because its leader dared to provoke the wrath of Khan. It is the independent observer who accompanies Khenbish that is the real surprise at the end of the opening chapter.

The story leaps from the past into the present, just four months ago. The tendrils that connect the two begin to reveal themselves; and the adventure begins.

The summary of "The Jungle" alludes to their many types: real, imagined, physical, and politcal. Readers will enjoy finding their way through all of them. It's easy to see why the "Oregon" files have eclipsed the Dirk Pitt series. The writing here is far superior to what the two Cusslers are generating together. A hat tip to Upton Sinclair, whose book inspired the title.

I always love a good Clive Cussler book and have really learned to enjoy the addition of Jack DuBrul to the writing team. The Oregon Files are a great series and just when you thought there couldn't be a group to top NUMA along comes The Corporation with The Oregon.

After their last adventure the crew of The Oregon find themselves needing work. Their contracts with the U.S. Government have dried up because the President doesn't particularly like them, especially since they went against everything he asked in the last adventure and succeeded when no one should have. So, now the Corporation is taking on more and more private jobs. But they have one particular preference, they won't work for criminals or people they consider bad. That leaves them with slim pickings. But they receive two jobs right in a row to rescue children (one a teenager and one a young adult) of some very wealthy people. Each case is unique and not tied together. Or are they.

During the first job to rescue a young teenager from a life in the Taliban they team not only rescues the boy but rescues a Private Security Company Employee who was captured by the Taliban and going to be used as their next TV broadcast of a beheading of an infidel. Juan and his team rescue the young MacD Lawless as well as their clients son. MacD proves to be a great find for them as during their escape he proves his calmness under fire and even saves the whole teams lives with a heads up move to divert a sure missile strike.

Juan offers MacD a job since they are one team member short (after loosing a team member in the last book). They have to vet MacD first, but in the meantime they hire him on probation and put him to work. He proves to be a highly useful tracker as well as an experienced warrior, he is a former Army Ranger. I love the way that Cussler and DuBrul weave in a new character and make him a part of the team so well.

Unfortunately during the time it turns out that MacD is a spy for someone trying to take down the Corporation. Or is he really a spy. That has to be determined.

Then we discover that not only is the Corporation tracking down to missing children but they have stumbled across the beginning of a world terrorism plot. A group has discovered how to create a Quantum Computer that has 10,000 times the computing power of anything the U.S. Government has. This computer can hack into anything and take over control of anything. This group is trying to hold the U.S. Government hostage. They threaten acts of terrorism unless the U.S. President bows to their desires and terms.

Unknown to the President, The Corporation is already at work tracking this threat down. They have figured it out before anyone else, it seems (of course). But then Langston Overholt comes on the scene and the CIA is again asking The Corporation for help.

The plot is wonderful. The pace is fast. The characters are amazing and the new ones that are woven into the story add to the team without distracting from the plot.

Cussler and DuBrul have again hit another home run. This is a must read for any Clive Cussler fans.

Enjoy!

Decent effort
By Zahara
Cripes....will you people who trash a book because of the price get a clue? Amazon does not set the price of the book and that includes the Kindle version. So stop complaining and review THE BOOK.

Finally a decent effort after a couple of really poor books. It's the Clive we've come to expect. So if you want 'literature' this isn't it. If you just plain like action novels this fills the bill decently.

It's Quentin Crisp, what more do you need to know? Witty, sarcastic, self-deprecating.

Every eccentric should read this
By Ryno Mulder
I'll forever be greatful to my friend who gave me this seemingly random book that didn't much pique my interest when I scanned over its back cover. Why would any gay boy be interested in the ideas of an old fogey who was in his 70s in the 1980s? Quentin Crisp is undermarketed and would be prescribed reading if there were such a thing as formal "gayducation". He is (or should be) an icon and pallbearer to all transgender people, artists and anyone who lives (or wants to live) vicariously off the beaten track. Itis hard to describe Quentin's genius as it is SO unique. You can try and explain his life as a social misfit who decided in a very ripe old age to leave his native England for NYC but none of that seem as interesting as his brilliant mind and way of thinking. Suffice to say that this unemployed man with little formal education remains a sparkling wit, intellectual, philosopher and style arbiter who is unlikely ever to be matched. Quentin Crisp puts Oscar Wilde to shame.

Introduction
We all find ourselves wondering what goes on behind the closed doors of the hiring managers. What is this mysterious group thinking? What are their secret criteria?
Don’t you wish you had a crystal ball to look into the minds of these powerful corporate gatekeepers and find out what they’re looking for? What their idea of a top candidate really is, really looks like?
Now you will. Your crystal ball is here.
This book is the first to take job seekers behind the closed doors of hiring managers, providing a true, uncensored, and sometimes even shocking look at their processes and systems. For the first time you will see their hidden agendas, secret discriminations, fears, and motivations. It’s all here. You will finally know exactly what these people are trained to look for, say, screen out, and recommend for hire. You will learn the common traps and pitfalls most job candidates accidentally fall into that knock them out of the running. And you’ll learn why no company and no interviewer will ever tell you what you did wrong that cost you the job you wanted.
You will learn how to get past online résumé screeners, psychological assessments, and underhanded tactics so you will stand out among the overwhelming competition for top jobs. You will finally understand the true nature of the system and how to work it to your advantage.
This is not the standard "corporate-approved" job search guide providing generic advice ensuring you’ll look and sound like everyone else applying for the job. It will take you deep on the inside, where no hiring manager wants you to go. It will give you an unveiled glimpse into the real world of corporate selection and the hidden realms of the key decision makers, so you’ll know exactly what to do at each step of the process to stand out from the crowd as the star candidate.
Recently, I had a client who had not been able to find a job after nine months of frustrated searching. He was about to lose his house and couldn’t figure out why he kept getting calls and interviews but no offers. He was highly skilled, very personable, and overall an extremely desirable candidate but had not been able to get past the initial interview process. As this happened to him repeatedly, he had become more and more despondent. Little did he know it was a matter of changing one simple thing. In less than an hour we suddenly had our hands on the problem and turned it around. It was one of those things that nobody talks about and you won’t find in any other job search book. He could immediately see it would make all the difference, and as the clouds mentally parted for him he asked me, "Why haven’t I heard this anywhere before?"
The sad truth is, most of what you truly need to know in your job search is currently known only to the hiring insiders and is protected as "top-secret" information within companies. It is hidden away in secrecy because companies don’t want you to have the power in the interview process. That scares them. If you knew you could manipulate the entire interview process, then companies would no longer have the upper hand. Then you would be screening them instead of the other way around.
With his very next interview my client had a top-tier job offer. Nine months of rejection and frustration for lack of one bit of insider information. What worked for him was Secret 32, just one of the secrets I share in this book. There are forty-four insider secrets collected here to help you remove those unfair barriers, supercharge your job search process, maximize your income potential, and get those multiple job offers rolling in.
To increase your chances of getting any job you desire, nothing is more powerful than insider information from someone who has been deep in the hiring trenches. As a former human-resources executive and hiring manager, I’ve hired people at all stages from entry level to Chief Operating Officer. I’ve trained human-resources departments and taught companies the very same underhanded and intimidating strategies I describe here. I’ve been involved in hiring searches from small start-ups to large corporations, and I’ll tell you that they are all looking for employees using the same basic criteria: things they will never tell you, things they feel are critical to their survival. There is no leeway. One move on the wrong side of the invisible line they’ve set will land your résumé in the trash (a.k.a. the "I’ll keep your résumé on file" drawer). But it no longer has to be that way. I’ve seen firsthand the underhanded, unfair, and grueling tactics used by hiring managers and I’m ready to share all their best-kept secrets.
Being able to recognize and get past the tactics of these powerful corporate gatekeepers can mean the difference between getting the job of your dreams and getting the disheartening form letter saying "thanks but no thanks."
I know exactly what companies are looking for in those teetering stacks of résumés, and I can tell you how to get yours on top. I know why they ask you trick questions during interviews, and I know exactly what they’re screening for. I know what secret discriminations and hiring criteria are lurking within the hiring process and how to keep them from impacting your success. I know how to push the magic buttons to get the highest possible salary and greatest benefit package. In addition, I know the powerful secrets to looking like the newest company star within the first ninety days. Now you will, too.
Whether you find yourself suddenly out of work, a recent graduate looking for your first job, or simply unhappy with your current situation and looking for something new, these insider secrets will give you a huge lead over the competition.
Prepare yourself. You are about to understand the interview and hiring process from an entirely different viewpoint. You are about to become the one in charge of the process. In this book, nothing is considered taboo, nothing held back, no holds barred. This is the real deal on how top candidates are screened and hired all across America from the biggest corporate giants to the smallest mom- and-pop operations. The real system is not always politically correct, is often unfair, and sometimes is not even legal. But if you learn how this secret system works, you’ll know how to sail through the interview process and become the top candidate for any job. You will never have to stress over answering trick questions correctly, explaining that gap in your employment history, handling a termination on your record, or looking like the top candidate any company would be proud to hire on the spot.
You will never look at a job search the same way again, and the overly powerful corporate gatekeepers won’t be able to stand in the way of your dreams once you know all their best-kept secrets.

Invaluable guide to job searching
By Nancy
I ordered What Does Somebody Have To Do To Get A Job Around Here after having searched for a job for over a year unsuccessfully. I am an older worker and have not had to look for a job for many, many years. Quite frankly I was baffled and frustrated by what I was seeing - overt discrimination, low paying jobs with very stiff requirements and 45 hour work weeks at a minimum. There were few responses to my initial contact with cover letter and resume. When I had interviews that seemed to go well I didn't get the follow up call.
I got Ms. Shapiro's book last week and the clouds have parted in many areas! The first thing I have done is follow her guidelines in changing my resume. The eye opener for me was her statement, "It's a billboard, not a book." It has to grab the hiring managers attention like a billboard does when you are on a highway. Make them interested, want to learn more. Full disclosure is not needed. My resume was a book that covered 30+ years of work experience. It was a hard process for me but I now have a crisp, eye catching resume.
Ms. Shapiro offers much more information and advice that I have started to put into use. The book is chock full of helpful insights and she is available to answer questions on her website, [...]. I have found her to be very generous with her time, information and encouragement.
I wish I had this book before I began my job search! I can't recommend it highly enough

Pulls Back the Curtain on What Goes On During Hiring Process In Recession
By Reader from Washington, DC
I am really glad that I bought this book. Over the last year, I have prepared thoroughly for interviews, read a number of excellent job hunting and interviewing books -- and yet I felt, on interviews, as though something has changed dramatically in the way organizations make hiring decisions.

Two examples: job descriptions often go way beyond reasonable expectations("must have 95 years of experience, a perfect credit rating, and be prepared to travel 150% of the time.") and many of the questions asked as part of the hiring process in some organizations are extremely personal and intrusive, with no apparent connection to the jobs themselves.

Ms. Shapiro puts it very well in the first chapter: "Most people have felt a shift in our hiring practices but can't quite pinpoint why things feel so much more stressful than they used to. It's not your imagination. If it seems tougher out there than it used to be, that's because it is. Interviewing and hiring has gone from being merely a stressful process to a full-scale gauntlet that most candidates are finding themselves unprepared for."

Ms. Shapiro, a former corporate insider, has been invaluable in showing me what new trends are now dominating corporate hiring processes, including many "secret criteria," such as some organizations refusing to hire people who have been unemployed X amount of time or who voluntarily left their previous jobs, and also under-the-radar discrimination against people by age, gender, and other factors, etc.

An especially useful insight of hers:

"Because a hiring manager's job is on the line with every recommendation for hire, the safest bet is the one who will receive the offer, not necessarily the one with the best qualifications."

While it is likely that the ailing U.S. economy is at least partially responsible for this shift, these changes in the hiring process may remain well into an economic recovery.

These changes are not discussed in most popular job hunting and career counseling books, which assume that organizations are still operating in the relatively sunny, ethical "search for the best candidate" mode of more prosperous eras.

Everyone who is job hunting or has a friend, family member or co-worker who is job hunting should give them a copy of this book. It will be of immense help to them.

For those who posted describing the book as "cynical" and likely to drain a job hunter's hope -- I actually felt much better as I read the book. I actually felt more hope, and felt relief that my uneasiness at some of the interviews that I've had was a justifiable response to some very odd organizational behavior.

Ms. Shapiro provides practical strategies to survive and find jobs in the new, more stressful job search environment.

Kill Bin Laden: A Delta Force Commander's Account of the Hunt for the World's Most Wanted Man, by Dalton Fury

The mission was to kill the most wanted man in the world--an operation of such magnitude that it couldn’t be handled by just any military or intelligence force. The best America had to offer was needed. As such, the task was handed to roughly forty members of America’s supersecret counterterrorist unit formerly known as 1st Special Forces Operational Detachment-Delta; more popularly, the elite and mysterious unit Delta Force.
The American generals were flexible. A swatch of hair, a drop of blood, or simply a severed finger wrapped in plastic would be sufficient. Delta's orders were to go into harm's way and prove to the world bin Laden had been terminated.
These Delta warriors had help: a dozen of the British Queen’s elite commandos, another dozen or so Army Green Berets, and six intelligence operatives from the CIA who laid the groundwork by providing cash, guns, bullets, intelligence, and interrogation skills to this clandestine military force. Together, this team waged modern siege of epic proportions against bin Laden and his seemingly impenetrable cave sanctuary burrowed deep inside the Spin Ghar Mountain range in eastern Afghanistan.
Over the years, since the battle ended, scores of news stories have surfaced offering tidbits of information about what actually happened in Tora Bora. Most of it is conjecture and speculation.
This is the real story of the operation, the first eyewitness account of the Battle of Tora Bora, and the first book to detail just how close Delta Force came to capturing bin Laden, how close U.S. bombers and fighter aircraft came to killing him, and exactly why he slipped through our fingers. Lastly, this is an extremely rare inside look at the shadowy world of Delta Force and a detailed account of these warriors in battle.

Review
"Mr. President if you had let these guys run this war it would have been over by now. Read this book now, all of you. [Kill Bin Laden is] the best book ever written by a special operations insider. This guy Fury’s men are the real-deal Delta Force operators. You need to know what happened at Tora Bora, and this great book will tell you." --Colonel David Hunt, U.S. Army (Ret.), New York Times bestselling author of They Just Don’t Get It and On The Hunt, and FOX News Special Ops and Counterterrorism Analyst "Special Forces Operational Detachment - Delta is without doubt one of the most fearsome military units ever assembled, with many camp followers seeking with only limited success to record its deeds. There is only one way to know what really happened in any Delta mission, and that is to be there. Delta officer Dalton Fury didn't just take part in the battle of Tora Bora, he commanded all the special operations troops, both U.S. and British, who were there. Kill Bin Laden is a proud, riveting, warts-and-all account of that battle, one of the most important special operations missions of all time." --Michael Smith, author of KILLER ELITE: The Inside Story of America’s Most Secret Special Operations Team “An important, must-read book about real warriors. A story that so positively reflects what on-the-ground decision making, professional acceptance of risk, and maximizing interagency cooperation can do. Dalton Fury shows us with amazing detail and insight what highly trained and motivated special operators can accomplish successfully in combat out of all proportion to their numbers.” --Cofer Black, former chief of the Central Intelligence Agency's Counter Terrorist Center

Go inside the Tora Bora hunt
By Gordon Ewasiuk
Conventional history says Osama Bin Laden escaped the U.S. manhunt during the invasion of Afghanistan. This book goes behind the scenes and provides amazing details about how Bin Laden managed to do it. The book talks about the Delta Force commandos and other Special Forces elements that were on-scene and actively pursuing Bin Laden. Some of the stories are addictive and yet so frustrating. One example is how the U.S. forces were prevented from taking the lead in the hunt or even pursuing Bin Laden into Pakistan. Delta Force commandos actually had to hide from the press officials who were on the battlefield!

The tactics and equipment used in the hunt, despite the author's attempt to obfuscate them, were interesting.

This book is a wonderful way to get lost in the mountains of Tora Bora for a few hours. Dalton Fury's writing style is easy to read and follow. He doesn't thump his chest in patriotic pride or wrap himself in the flag when telling his stories like some authors. He just tells a story in layman's terms. No attempts to add excitement and inflate accomplishments. Just the facts. It's a great read.

Catch him if you can
By Mahlon Christensen
Kill Bin Laden offers a thrilling "boots on the ground" narrative of the hunt for UBL in the Tora Bora region of eastern Afghanistan in December 2001. Written by Dalton Fury (not his real name)a former Delta Force operator who had tactical command of the team assigned to go into Tora Bora and eliminate Usama.

Refreshingly, Fury keeps his political opinions to himself while still managing to deftly demonstrate how political wrangling in the upper echelons of the U.S. command structure, as well as the Muj, had hampered his team's ability to complete their mission, and allowed UBL to escape into Pakistan.

The book is a great primer on small unit tactics and doctrine. The author writes in a rather dry, clipped "just the facts" type of style, but it's still a fascinating read because he was there.

A true life account of a top Delta unit
By Donna
With all of my exposure to major motion pictures and television movies, television series, and the never ending series of print/television news about war and its participants I found it even more difficult to decide which book(s) had the most credible authors and contents. I assume that given all of that exposure most people have at least heard of the Delta force (or Delta something or other) and know that these "units" are made up of the top elite of the armed services members. I was reading a discussion board comprised of some ex-Delta and other armed services units where were heavily critizing "Dalton Fury" the author of Kill Bin Laden because his story and revelations are seen as some sort of betrayal to the other members and the country. I can't recall Fury's real name now but these guys knew it and were directing their criticisms directly at him claiming that they and the author had signed papers that they would not publish anything without permission from the government. The author did submit his book to the government but the government implicitly approved all of the contents due to a slip up so many were critical of the contents. Not one, however, claimed that the book was untrue or unfaithful to the truth, quite the opposite.
So that's why I chose this book and you should too. The author is one of the leaders who was there in the Pakistan Afghanistan border, near Tora Bora. He tells the truth behind what happened there after 9-11 and why the US was allegedly unable to capture or kill bin Laden. It shall never cease to amaze me just what these Delta units (and others like Navy Seals) are actual capable of doing and sustaining for days on end. All of the strenuous training, the research, the intelligence and endurance, not to mention the extremely high degree of personal danger under the worst sets of circumstances associated with mission after mission. Many of the missions are touched upon in the book which is a relatively easy book to read and enjoy. It also contains many footnotes which lead you to some really interesting government sites. These government sites not only support and add to the author's claims but contain a good deal of fascinating reading in and of themselves. You could spend hours reading the contents of these sites (write ups, statements, interviews, etc. about both familiar and unfamiliar events that have occurred in the past years.)
