One of the most widely adopted composition readers of all time, The Bedford Reader continues to engage and inspire students with remarkable selections, outstanding instructional material, and a unique "Writers on Writing" feature in which 50 of the book’s writers comment on their process and their work. Thorough coverage of critical reading, effective writing, and working with sources guides students, now more than ever, through their own academic writing. And an exciting visual dimension shows that rhetorical methods apply to both images and text.

The Bedford Reader is a favorite of students for the Kennedys’ clarity and wit, of instructors for the flexible and realistic view of the rhetorical methods, and of both for the superior selections and perceptive commentaries by writers worth reading.

A college instructor's perspective...
By D. C. Elsbury
As an English instructor at a community college, this collection as a text for essay writing offers great appeal with its diversity in voices, cultures, topics, and points of view (though the explanation of POV needs greater scope). In addition to the writer's bio before each story, one of my favorite features is the writer's shared insights afterward about his or her story, writing process, personal background, or career development (students enjoy this feature, too); and, there are discussion questions with "Suggested Journaling ideas," and suggestions for rewriting "Journals into Essays," that help students who always ask "What do I write about?" Story length as reading assignments are manageable for time-crunched, back-to-schoolers with already-full plates--juggling jobs, kids, and classes--and little time for 400-page novels. It may not be my text of choice for teaching argument and research, but as an introduction, it works.

The Best I've Ever Seen
By John
I was required to get this book for an Intermediate Composition course in college and it has to be the best college textbook I have ever had. First there is a wide variety of stories to choose from and at least one will appeal to everyone. Even though it is a educational textbook I still read it in my leisure time, as well.

Each work demands the reader's attention in its own way.
By A Customer
My high school English class analyzes two essays from the book every grading period. I have seldom had an assignment that I enjoy so much; after analyzing the first essay assigned (Homeless), I sat back to think about what the writer had expressed. The essays are thought provoking and demand attention. The Bedford Reader is a book that I would recommend for the sheer enjoyment of exploring one's own mind and escaping to the world of another's.

From Publishers Weekly
Minkoff began collecting jokes almost 50 years ago when he was 13. Six years ago, he launched his U.K.-based Web site awordinyoureye.com as "a repository for my vast collection of Jewish jokes." When Minkoff's jocularity brought popularity, his avocation turned into "a full-time job which required a lot of maintenance." With the site mushrooming to more than 1,760 jokes, it became the main source for this comprehensive collection, first published in London last year by Robson/Chrysalis. These Jewish japes and jests run the gamut from deft definitions, one-off one-liners, pithy puns, quizzes and ribald riddles to satirical songs and full-page humorous stories. Fresh, familiar or unfamiliar, all the jokes have been rewritten by Minkoff into his own style, and he has grouped gags thematically into various categories and subcategories. Spanning birth to death, the 86 topics feature more than 1,000 jokes: On circumcision: " 'It won't be long now,' said the rabbi as he circumcised the little boy." Marriage: "Q: Why are many Jewish girls still single these days? A: They have not yet met Dr. Right." Jewish telegram: "Begin worrying. Details to follow." On the 23rd Psalm for Jewish princesses: "The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want. He leadeth me into Bloomingdale's." The lack of cartoons may disappoint some readers, but even they will find that this clever kosher compilation generates giggles galore. (Aug. 22)

The Jewish Jokes

Early Years

Babies

Sarah has recently given birth to her first child. Sarah is also a bit of a worrier, to say the least, and she hasn't been home long before she calls her doctor in a state of panic.

"So what's the problem, Sarah?" asks the doctor.

"My baby has a temperature of 102, doctor. Is he going to die?" shouts Sarah.

The doctor, needing to determine whether Sarah was taking the reading under the arm, in the mouth or elsewhere, says, "I hope you don't mind me asking you this question, but--how are you taking it?

Sarah replies, "Oh, I'm holding up pretty well, doctor."

Sadie is 65 years old and has always remained unmarried, yet she desperately wants a baby of her own. So with the help of modern science and with the help of a fertility specialist, Sadie has her miracle baby.

When she gets home, all her friends and relatives come to see her and meet the new member of her family. But when they ask to see the baby, Sadie says, "not yet."

A little later they again ask to see the baby and again Sadie says, "not yet."

Finally they ask, "So when can we see the baby?"

Sadie replies, "When the baby cries."

"Why do we have to wait until the baby cries?" they say.

Sadie replies, "Because I forgot where I put it."

•••

Rivkah went to her doctor for a checkup. Afterward the doctor said to her, "I must inform you that you have a fissure in your uterus, and if you ever have a baby it would be a miracle."

As soon as she got home, Rivkah said to her husband, "You vouldn't belief it. I vent to the doctah and he told me--'You haf a fish in your uterus and if you haf a baby it vill be a mackerel.'"

•••

Yitzhak and Melvyn live in a retirement home. One day, they are sitting on a bench under a tree, and Yitzhak turns to Melvyn and says, "Melvyn, I'm 85 years old and I'm full of aches and pains. You're about my age. How do you feel?"

Melvyn replies, "I feel just like a new-born baby."

"Really? Like a baby?"

"Yes," replies Melvyn, "No hair, no teeth and I think I just wet myself."

•••

Sam had just picked up his wife Beckie and their new baby from the hospital and brought them home. It was not long before Beckie suggested that Sam should try his hand at changing the diaper. "I'm busy," he said, "I promise I'll do the next one."

The next time soon came around so Beckie asked him again. Sam looked at Beckie and said, innocently, "I didn't mean the next diaper, I meant the next baby."

•••

Ruth had just given birth to her tenth child in Edgware hospital. "Congratulations," said the nurse, "but don't you think this is enough of the babies, already?"

Ruth replied, "Are you joking? This is the only time I get to have a vacation each year."

•••

The time had arrived for Moshe to take his Leah to the hospital to have their baby delivered. Upon their arrival, the doctor told them that he had invented a new machine that would transfer a portion of the mother's labor pain to the father. He asked if they were willing to try it out. They were both very much in favor.

The doctor set the pain transfer dial to ten percent for starters, explaining that even ten percent was probably more pain than Moshe had ever experienced before. But as the labor progressed, Moshe felt fine and asked the doctor to go ahead and bump it up a notch. The doctor then adjusted the machine to twenty percent pain transfer. Moshe was still feeling fine. The doctor checked his blood pressure and was amazed at how well he was doing. At this point they decided to try for fifty percent. Moshe continued to feel quite well. Since it was obviously helping out Leah considerably, Moshe encouraged the doctor to transfer ALL the pain to him. Leah delivered a healthy baby with virtually no pain. Leah and Moshe were ecstatic.

When they got home, they found their milkman dead at their front door.

•••

Miriam gets on a bus with her baby. As she goes to pay her fare, the bus driver says to her, "I've seen a lot of babies in my time but that's the ugliest one I've ever seen in my life."

Miriam is shocked and very angry at this insensitive remark. She sits down and starts to cry. The man next to her asks her what's the matter.

Miriam replies, "The bus driver just insulted me."

The man replies, "I wouldn't let him get away with it. You go and give him a piece of your mind. Go on--I'll hold your monkey for you."

•••

Little Benjy was in his Hebrew class and was learning all about how God created everything, including humans. He was especially interested when his teacher got to the bit about how Eve was created out of one of Adam's ribs. Later that day, Benjy's mother noticed him lying down as though he were ill, so she said to him, "Benjy, darling, what's the matter with you?"

Benjy replied, "I have a pain in my side, Mom. I think I'm going to have a wife."

As his wife was expecting their first baby, Rabbi Bloom went to the synagogue committee and asked for a salary increase. After much deliberation, they passed a resolution that when the rabbi's family expanded again, so would his payslip.

Six children later, it began to get expensive for the shul and they decided to hold a meeting again to discuss the rabbi's salary situation. This time there was much arguing and shouting. Rabbi Bloom could take it no more, so he got up and said, "Having children is an act of God."

The chairman replied, "Snow and storms are also 'acts of God,' but when it gets to be too much, we wear rubbers."

Circumcision

"I'm getting operated on tomorrow."

"Oh? What are they going to do?"

"Circumcise me!"

"I had that done when I was just a few days old."

"Did it hurt?"

"I couldn't walk for a year."

•••

And Moses said unto the Lord, "We are Your chosen people and You want us to cut the tips off of our WHAT?"

•••

A rabbi and a minister decided to buy a new car together. The day after they bought it, the rabbi found the minister driving it. The minister explained that he had just gone to the carwash because, in his religion, it is customary to welcome a new member with the rite of baptism. The next day, the minister discovered the rabbi cutting the end off the exhaust pipe.

•••

A tax official visited a rural synagogue for an inspection. Rabbi Gold accompanied him.

"So rabbi, tell me please, after you have distributed all your unleavened bread, what do you do with the crumbs?"

"Why, we gather them carefully and send them to the city and then they make bread of them again and send it to us."

"Ah. So what about candles after they are burned? What do you do with the ends?"

"We send them to the city as well, and they make new candles from them and send them to us."

"And what about circumcision? What do you do with those leftover pieces?"

The rabbi, wearily, replied, "We send them to the city as well."

"To the city? And when you do this, what do they send to you?"

"Today they have sent you to us."

A: A girl.

Morris was a very uneducated man, but by ruthless means became very rich. The older Morris got, the richer he got, the richer he got, the more women he had, the more women he had, the less use he was to them. One day, Morris went to the top surgeon in the business and said, "I want to be castrated."

"You want to be WHAT?"

"I said castrated, my sexual powers are failing. I insist you operate at once."

The surgeon was a bit dubious, but in view of this last statement, and for a fee of $4,000, he carried out the operation.

Some weeks later, Morris was drinking in his local pub, listening to the conversation at the next table. "Hey, Barney," said one of the group, "Do you think there's any truth to the rumor that if a man gets himself circumcised, it improves his sexual performance?"

Morris quickly left the pub muttering to himself "Circumcised, that was the word I've been trying to think of."

Benjamin, a young Talmud student who had left Israel for New York some years earlier, returns to visit his family.

"But Benjamin, where is your beard?" asks his mother upon seeing him.

"Mother," he replies, "In Brooklyn, nobody wears a beard."

"But at least you keep the Sabbath?" his mother asks.

"Mother, business is business. In NYC, everybody works on the Sabbath."

"But kosher food you still eat?" asks his mother.

"Mother, in New York, it is very difficult to keep kosher."

Then silence, while his elderly mother gives thought to what she has just heard. Then she leans over and whispers in his ear, "Benjamin, tell me, are you still circumcised?"

David's watch was not working. He remembered passing a little shop with clocks and watches in the window, so he took the watch in for repair.

"Can I help you?" asked the man behind the counter.

"I want this watch repaired," said David.

"I'm sorry. I don't repair watches."

"Well, how much for a new one then?" asked David.

"I don't sell watches."

"You don't sell watches?"

"No, I don't sell watches."

"Clocks, you sell clocks then? How much for a clock?"

"I don't sell clocks."

David was getting exasperated. "You don't sell watches, you don't sell clocks?"

"No, I'm a mohel," replied the man.

"Then why do you have all those clocks and watches in the window?"

"If you were a mohel, tell me, what would you put in your window?"

"It won't be long now," said the rabbi as he circumcised the little boy.

Harry and Victor are in the men's room at Grand Central Station.

Harry says to Victor, "Are you from Syosset?"

Victor replies, "Yes, how did you know that?"

Harry says, "Do you belong to the Syosset Synagogue?"

Victor exclaims, "Yes, how did you know that?"

Harry then says, "Is Rabbi Levy, the mohel, still there?"

Victor replies, "Yes, how did you know that?"

Harry answers, "It's obvious. Rabbi Levy always cuts on a slant and you're peeing on my shoe."

Tex Cohen lived in--you guessed it, Texas. One day, he bought a round of drinks for everyone in the pub because his wife Honeysuckle had just given birth to a typical Texas baby boy weighing twenty pounds. Everyone in the pub congratulated him and many told him that they found it hard to believe that his baby weighed in so heavy. But Tex assured them, "It's true, it's really true."

When Tex came back to the same pub three weeks later, the bartender said to him, "Say, you're the father of the baby that weighed twenty pounds at birth aren't you? So tell us, how much does your baby weigh now?"

Tex proudly replied, "Twelve pounds."

The barman could not understand this, so he asked Tex, "Why? Is he ill? What happened? He weighed twenty pounds at birth, why has he lost so much weight?"

Tex took a big swig from his beer, wiped his lips with the back of his hand, leaned into the bartender and proudly replied, "Had him circumcised."

Leah gives 25¢ to her daughter Sarah. The little girl goes outside and returns ten minutes later without the coin. Wondering what she has done with the money, Leah asks, "Where is the 25¢ I gave you, darling?"

"I gave it to an old lady," says Sarah.

"Oh, you sweet girl. I am so proud. Tomorrow you shall have one dollar."

The next day, true to her word, Leah gives Sarah a whole dollar. Off Sarah goes outside and returns later without the bill.

"What did you do with the one pound?"

"Oh, today I saw the same old lady," begins Sarah, as her mother beamed at her, "and gave her the dollar so she could buy me a bigger ice cream."

Rabbi Bloom asked young Paul what his favorite Bible story was.

"I guess the one about Noah and the Ark, where they floated around on the water for forty days and forty nights" replied Paul.

"That was a good story," said Rabbi Bloom, "and, with all that water, I bet they had a good time fishing, don't you think?"

Paul thought for a moment, then replied, "I don't think so--they only had two worms."

Whenever four-year-old Miriam was asked her name, she replied, "I'm Mr. Levy's daughter."

So her mother told her this was wrong and that she must answer, "I'm Miriam Levy."

Next Shabbes, after the service, the rabbi asked her, "Aren't you Mr. Levy's daughter, little girl?"

Miriam replied, "I thought I was, but my mother says I'm not."

Even though they were brought up strictly orthodox, Shlomo, eight, and Isaac, ten, were very naughty brothers. When anything went wrong in town, they were nearly always involved. One day, a friend visited their parents and mentioned a rabbi who was having great success with delinquent children. As they were finding it difficult to control their boys, they went to this rabbi and asked whether he could help.

He said he could and asked to see the younger boy first--but he must be alone. So Shlomo went to see the rabbi while Isaac was kept at home. The rabbi sat Shlomo down at a huge, solid mahogany desk and he sat down on the other side. For five minutes they just sat and stared at each other. Finally, the rabbi pointed his finger at Shlomo and asked, "Where is God?"

Shlomo said nothing.

Again, in a louder tone, the rabbi pointed at Shlomo and asked, "Where is God?" Again Shlomo said nothing.

Then the rabbi leaned across the desk, put his finger on Shlomo's nose and shouted, "For the third time, Shlomo, where is God?"

Shlomo panicked at this, got up and ran all the way home. He went straight up to Isaac's room and said, "We are in big trouble, Isaac."

"What do you mean, big trouble, little brother?" said Isaac.

Shlomo replied, "God is missing--and they think we did it."

As soon as the Shabbes service had ended, little Benjy walks up to Rabbi Bloom and says, "When I grow up, Rabbi, I'm going to give you lots of money."

Rabbi Bloom laughs and replies, "That's really good to know, Benjy, but why do you want to do this?"

Benjy replies, "Because my Dad says you're the poorest rabbi we have ever had!"

Sadie goes with her young son Moshe to visit her best friend Rifka and her young daughter Hannah, as they do every Sunday afternoon. When they arrive, the two mothers send their children upstairs so they can talk about their neighbors. The children are first given a stern warning not to fight. After about an hour, everything is too quiet upstairs so Sadie hollers out, "Children, you're not fighting up there are you?"

Moshe's voice comes back, "No mum, we're not fighting, we're shtupping."

Sadie replies, "That's good children, don't fight."

Sadie was making some pancakes as a treat for her two young sons, Simon and Nicky. But the boys began to argue as to who should get the first pancake she made.

"Shame on you boys," said Sadie. "If the wise King Solomon were here today, he would say, 'let my brother have the first pancake.'"

Nicky looked at Simon and said, "OK, Simon, you be King Solomon today."

"I was such an ugly baby, my mother never breast fed me. She told me that she only liked me as a friend."

Paul says, "But I've found a girl."

"Who?" says his father.

"My grandma."

"Let me get this straight." the father says. "You want to marry my mother? You can't do that."

"Well, why not?" says Paul. "You married mine."

One morning, as little Hannah was sitting at the kitchen sink watching her mother wash and dry the breakfast plates, she noticed that her mother had several strands of white hair mixed in with her dark hair. Hannah looked at her mother and said, "Why have you got some white hairs, mummy?"

Her mother replied, "Well, darling, every time a daughter does something bad to make her mother cry or unhappy, one of her mother's hairs turns white."

Hannah thought about this information for a few moments then said, "Mummy, so how come all of grandma's hairs are white?"

Rebecca was a kindergarten teacher. One day, during her art lesson, as she was walking around the class observing the children while they were drawing, she stopped at little Leah's desk. Leah was working away very diligently.

Rebecca said, "What are you drawing, Leah?"

Leah replied, "I'm drawing God, teacher."

Rebecca paused and then said, "But no one knows what God looks like, Leah."

Without looking up from her work, Leah replied, "They will in a minute."

Schools and Teachers

A proud young mother sees off her son to school on the first day. "Be a good boy, my bubbeleh! Be careful and think of mummy, sweetest! Come right home on the bus, honey! Mummy loves you very much, baby."

At the end of the day, she's waiting for the bus and sweeps him into her arms. "And what did my love learn on his first day at school?"

"I learned that my name is David."

So Hyman arrives at the school. "I'm very sorry to tell you but we are expelling your son; we can't tolerate his sort of behavior here."

"But vy, vot's he done?"

"Well, to be quite frank, we found him playing with his genitals."

"But dat's not such a terrible ting, some of my best friends are genitals."

On her first day in her new job, Christine, a new school teacher, thinks it would be a good idea to try to bond with the children by asking each of them their name and what their father did for a living.

The first little girl replies, "My name is Celina, teacher, and my daddy is a dustman."

The next little boy replies, "I'm Peter and my dad is a gardener."

But the next little boy says, "My name is Moshe, teacher, and my father is a strip-o-gram during the day and works in a gay club at night."

Christine quickly changes the subject.

Later on, in the school playground, Christine quietly goes over to Moshe and asks, "Is it really true what you said about your father, Moshe?"

Moshe blushes and replies, "I'm sorry teacher but he's a chartered accountant at Arthur Andersen. I was just too embarrassed to say so."

The Sunday school lesson had just finished and the rabbi asked if the children had any questions. Little David quickly raised his hand. "Yes, David? What question would you like to ask me?"

"I have four questions to ask you, Rabbi. Is it true that after the children of Israel crossed the Red Sea, they received the Ten Commandments?"

"Yes, David."

"And the children of Israel also defeated the Philistines?"

"Yes, David, that's also true."

"And the children of Israel also fought the Egyptians and fought the Romans and built the Temple?"

"Again you are correct, David."

"So my last question is, Rabbi, what were the grown-ups doing all this time?"

Mr. Henry says, "Why not 65? Sit down, you have a D minus."

Peter, name a two-digit number."

Peter responds, "18."

Mr. Henry says, "Why not 81? D minus for you, too."

"Moshe, name a two-digit number."

Moshe responds, "33."

Mr. Henry says, "Why not--Moshe! Stop these Jewish tricks at once!"

A young, popular, but controversial teacher tells her third-year class that she is an atheist and asks if there are any other atheists in the class, that they put up their hands. Not really knowing what an atheist was, but wanting to follow their teacher, all but one of them immediately put up their hands. The exception is Natalie. The teacher asks Natalie why she wants to be different to all the others.

"Because I'm not an atheist," she replies.

"So what are you then?" asks the teacher.

"I'm Jewish."

The teacher asks Natalie why she is Jewish.

"I was brought up knowing and loving God. My Mother is Jewish and my father is Jewish, so I am Jewish."

"That's not a good enough reason," the teacher says loudly. "What if your mum was a moron, and your dad was a moron. What would you be then?"

"Then I'd be an atheist," says Natalie, smiling.

The teacher then says, "Yes, Sarah, your mother could get pregnant."

Sarah then asks, "Miss, can my big sister also get pregnant?"

The teacher asks, "How old is your sister, Sarah?"

Sarah answers, "She's eighteen, Miss."

The teacher says, "Oh yes, your sister certainly could get pregnant."

So Sarah then asks, "Can I get pregnant, Miss?"

The teacher asks, "How old are you, Sarah?"

Sarah replies, "I'm seven years old, Miss."

The teacher says, "No, Sarah, you can't get pregnant."

Moshe replies, "My teacher, Miss Anderson, taught us that way, mummy."

Next day, Moshe's mother goes into his classroom, confronts Miss Anderson and tells her about Moshe's "different" way of doing arithmetic. Miss Anderson is shocked. At first she can't understand why Moshe would say that she had taught it, but then suddenly it dawned on her.

"I know why," she says, "in our class, we say, one and one, the sum of which is two."

It was lunchtime at the Jewish nursery school and all the children were lined up by the teachers. Then, as usual, they were led into the cafeteria. Laughing Out Loud
By JC
I was riding into San Francisco on BART reading OY! The Ultimate Book of Jewish Jokes and just burst out laughing. The woman next me looked at me strangely and seemed to edge away, so I smiled and explained I was reading the new joke book by David Minkoff. I read her the story that made me laugh (it was one of the naughtier ones so I wo'nt repeat it here) and she started laughing too. We read the book together and laughed all the way into the city. We got along so well that we went to Masa's for dinner together and later she agreed to come home with me. Of course the woman was my wife, so if you thought this book was a dating aid, I can't help you, but if you want the Ultimate in laughs, smiles, and belly laughs, buy this book.

Lots of laughs
By Phelps Gates
With more than 400 pages, there's plenty of material here to keep you laughing, and to let you entertain (and annoy) your friends for hours. My only quibble with the book is that about half the jokes aren't really Jewish jokes at all, but just ordinary jokes (some of them pretty old) dressed up with Jewish characters (and names, etc.). It does include my second-favorite joke ("He had a hat!"), but doesn't include my favorite Jewish joke: Fed up with public schools, a Jewish man sends his son to Catholic school; the kid comes home the first day and the father asks what he learned. "Well, dad, I learned that there are three gods, Father, Son, and Holy Ghost". The father replies: "No, no, no! That's not right! There's only one God! And we don't believe in him."

A wonderful book filled with stories and jokes about the plight of Jewish people that is designed to make the reader laugh. The incidents make light of the events that happen to people in such a way as to make the reader feel connected to the story teller. A truly entertaining book.

A Beautiful Blue Death (Charles Lenox Mysteries), by Charles Finch

Charles Lenox, Victorian gentleman and armchair explorer, likes nothing more than to relax in his private study with a cup of tea, a roaring fire and a good book. But when his lifelong friend Lady Jane asks for his help, Lenox cannot resist the chance to unravel a mystery.

Prudence Smith, one of Jane's former servants, is dead of an apparent suicide. But Lenox suspects something far more sinister: murder, by a rare and deadly poison. The grand house where the girl worked is full of suspects, and though Prue had dabbled with the hearts of more than a few men, Lenox is baffled by the motive for the girl's death.

When another body turns up during the London season's most fashionable ball, Lenox must untangle a web of loyalties and animosities. Was it jealousy that killed Prudence Smith? Or was it something else entirely? And can Lenox find the answer before the killer strikes again―this time, disturbingly close to home?

From Publishers Weekly
Set in England in 1865, Finch's impressive debut introduces an appealing gentleman sleuth, Charles Lenox. When Lady Jane Grey's former servant, Prue Smith, dies in an apparent suicide-by-poisoning, Lady Jane asks Lenox, her closest friend, to investigate. The attractive young maid had been working in the London house of George Barnard, the current director of the Royal Mint. Lenox quickly determines that Smith's death was a homicide, but both Barnard and Scotland Yard resist that conclusion, forcing him to work discreetly. Aided by his Bunter-like butler and friend, Graham, the detective soon identifies a main suspect, only to have that theory shattered by that man's murder. Finch laces his writing with some Wodehousian touches and devises a solution intricate enough to fool most readers. Lovers of quality historical whodunits will hope this is the first in a series. Kept by Seduction
By Romancing the Book

Review originally posted at Romancing the Book

When I sat down to read this book, I was antsy with excitement. It sounded just like what I love. It had all the elements in a paranormal romance that will steal my heart: passion, suspense, shifters, BDSM.....all amazing elements. I wanted to be sucked into the heart of the story, taken on a joy ride of lust and desire. I was. But, there was still a little bit missing, and I think it was because I came into the story on the 4th book, missing out on the full effect.

In Kept By Seduction, Ms. Holland tells Awai's tale. I loved her. She's been through hell: abuse, family disappearances, things no woman should ever go through. I truly was touched by her character. She lost her 3 nieces to kidnappings the years prior, and now she's anticipating her time. What she's not expecting is for her kidnapper to be a handsome-as-sin were-tiger and her mate. But, there's one problem. He's a Dom......and so is she.

Ty's character is amazing! I loved every minute of his side of the story. He's a Dom. Truly in every sense of the word. He's passionate about his lifestyle, not abusive as lots of Doms can be. When he comes for Awai, and tries to convince her that she is queen.....the sparks fly, sure, but I loved the way he worked with her, showing her that just because she has a dominant side, doesn't me she doesn't have a submissive side as well. Oh my god, he was awesome. I truly loved him.

So, despite the fact that there was something missing, I still enjoyed this amazingly written story of letting go, submitting and embracing love's seduction in all forms. Ms. Holland blended her characters perfectly with the intense BDSM element and turned out an amazing sensual story. I will be going be going back and starting this unique Fairytale series from the beginning, to truly grasp the entire story line. Bravo, Ms. Holland!

BDSM in Wonderland
By Elf2060
"Kept By Seduction" by Jaymie Holland/Cheyenne McCray is the final book in the erotic `Wonderland' quartet. Awai Steele has identified the day that her beloved nieces disappeared, each on the one year anniversary of the one prior. She has prepared as well as she could for her own disappearance but little suspects the remarkable and sensual world that she is about to enter at the behest of the Ty, the ruler of the Kingdom of Clubs whose other form is an enormous white tiger. Awai has reinvented herself as a Dominatrix but Ty undertakes to convince her to accept a different role if only she can bring herself to gift him with her complete trust.

This is another spicy read in the inventive series that explores a very different version of the beloved children's story of Alice and her adventures. The sensual and dominant males that populate this world have found their mates who will help them break the infertility curse as well as gracefully submit to the demands of these lusty shapeshifters. Awai is a blend of feisty female and willing submissive as she adapts to the new world that she has been dragged into. Different aspects of a BDSM relationship are explored in an imaginative fashion that blends magic and various tools that are sometimes employed including whips, wax and restraints. I appreciated the resolution of the mystery behind the curse and family conflict that is at the heart of the Wonderland woes and liked the way a thread was left for the opportunity to explore more adventures in this very sensual world.

delightful erotica
By A Customer
Three consecutive years on the same day, one of Awai Steele's nieces vanished (see Annie in Bound By Desire, Alice in Taken by Passion, and Alexei in Claimed by Pleasure). She has no idea who or why, but Awai waits for the arrival of the culprit(s) to come for her on the anniversary date of their kidnapping is soon; she plans to make them pay.

Awai has become a Dom who still yearns to be a sub but refuses to give into her nature after the torture of marriage to an abuser when she was very young. Kingdom of Clubs ruler Ty comes for his bride Awai, but he senses she refuses to ever submit though that is what she desires. He explains she is his queen and that her family is safe and married to monarchs and raising were-children in the other three kingdoms of Tarok. Still danger stalks the kingdoms perhaps from allegedly dead sorceress Mikaela, sister of the four kings who never accepted female rivals.

This reprint of the final Wonderland (as Cheyenne McCray) BDSM fantasy romance is a delightful erotica as Ty must persuade his Awai they can enjoy love and life if she sets free her inner sub. Ironically she is the one who believes that the true power is with the sub over the dom. Readers will enjoy the titillating gender war as the King of Clubs tries to persuade his queen neither has to bust genital parts to have a wonderful SM life together.

The Entity: Five Centuries of Secret Vatican Espionage, by Eric Frattini

The International Bestseller

“A true story that surpasses any novel by John le Carré.”—El País (Spain)

For five centuries, the Vatican—the oldest organization in the world, maker of kings and shaper of history—has used a secret spy service, called the Holy Alliance, or later, the Entity, to carry out its will. Forty popes have relied on it to carry out their policies. They have played a hitherto invisible role confronting de-Christianizations and schisms, revolutions and dictators, colonizations and expulsions, persecutions and attacks, civil wars and world wars, assassinations and kidnappings.

For the first time in English (following the bestselling Spanish and French editions), Eric Frattini tells the comprehensive tale of this sacred secret service. The Entity has been involved in the killings of monarchs, poisonings of diplomats, financing of South American dictators, protection of war criminals, laundering of Mafia money, manipulation of financial markets, provocation of bank failures, and financing of arms sales to combatants even as their wars were condemned, all in the name of God. The contradiction between God’s justice and Earth’s justice, Christian beliefs and Christian power all fall before the motto of the Entity: With the Cross and the Sword.

sub-society and research concerns
By S. L. Sinclair
Truly not a bad historical reference book of the Church. Providing insight into each important conclave and the divisions therein were, for me, interesting. Also in dealing with the papal states, their maintenance and eventual loss, was somewhat informative. The dealings of various European rulers and leaders with the Church added to my knowledge some new information.

My concern, and I'll admit it's a small one, deals with the fact gathering of groups like the Octogonus Circle, the Society of the Thirteen and others. What an ominous name - Octogonus Circle. We are so intrigued today with anything secret and hidden and as readers we enjoy conspiracies and spy-like games. Why is it that a group such as one of these, that has existed for nearly 500 years is basically non-existent on the Internet? On Amazon, The Octogonus Circle, by Peter Harris is only offered in Spanish and appears to be the only book like it anywhere. This book is not even referenced in Mr Frattini's bibliography! Moreover, there is nothing on the Internet aside these two books referencing the Circle. The same exists with the Society of the Thirteen, minus one book or at least the one that I could find.

I do ask where he gathered the information on these groups.

While I concede that what happens within governments is on most levels unknown to us. We truly have no clue, so I did find this book interesting. But I must wonder about certain aspects of this book, even though the bibliography is well listed - minus one aspect...

An ambitious project that falls short of the mark
By Thomas Bender
This book purports to be a history of Vatican secret agents, espionage, counter-espionage, and generally covert activities that have been covered up over time by the Vatican. The premise is intriguing and enticing, playing to our modern prejudices about nation states and the role of intelligence operations and covert operations to further one's objectives. Moreover, the existence of a presumably natural intelligence network (all the Catholic parishes, dioceses and episcopal conferences in the world) plus an accomplished diplomatic corps and foreign service - let alone the existence of the Vatican Secret Archives - suggests that there must be something to this work. I bought the book for myself and a relative.

A few introductory comments about style are in order. The first half of the book reads more like a combination of fiction and factual evidence. There are colorful details that could not be known (cardinals in carriages sketching signs of the cross in the middle of the night, priests hiding behind walls, etc) that stretch one's sense of credulity. There are jumps in logic that may seem intuitive but are without basis, usually introduced by phrases like "must have been" (for example, a prostitute is accused of being a Holy Alliance agent at one point who informed on someone). And there are insinuations to out-right claims that are unsubstantiated (the Stuart dynasty being fathered by a Vatican-deployed Italian priest who was an aide to the queen of Scotland). This style becomes tedious, especially when important information is not footnoted and one is forced to wonder how the jump is being made. It was extremely difficult to work through the first half of the book for this reason. The second half of the work reads much faster and tends to have fewer of these contrived associations and conclusions. Even so, there is a heavy reliance on associations, correlations, and insinuations.

Conceding that a project of this sort is a difficult undertaking given the thesis of the book, there are a number of problematic scholarly issues. A detailed survey of the endnotes reveals that the author has surveyed secondary sources rather extensively but has cited relatively few primary sources. This aspect of the documentation makes it difficult to judge whether the veracity of the accounts is accurate or someone else's spin of events. And there is no discussion of the secondary sources themselves to help judge their veracity. There were at least two endnotes associated with near certain declarations of fact that were acknowledged as unsubstantiated rumor and conjecture in the endnote itself. There were occasional endnotes that merely stated innocuous facts but did not document the source material for the noted statements. There were whole discussions of historical situations that required footnotes that were not noted. While in many histories this approach may be less problematic, the nature of this author's approach - attempting to sift through multiple sources and not having access to the Vatican Secret Archives - makes attention to detail imperative. Most disturbing were the discussions of political maneuvering within the conclaves that required some discussion of sources. Since all participants take an oath of secrecy under pain of excommunication, sourcing the information is important to avoid charges of sensationalizing and fictionalizing the accounts for dramatic purposes. Add onto this problem the acknowledgment by the author that there are no videos, recordings, phone taps, written minutes, or public accounts of these proceedings, and one can see that there is a huge gap in documentation. Perhaps most disappointing from the scholarly perspective were accounts from the 20th century that were not corroborated by available secular primary sources.

The discussion of sneaking Nazi criminals out of Europe is fascinating. It is unclear to what extent it was a true operation of the Holy Alliance based on this presentation. It is clear that officials in the Vatican were aware and tolerated the operation.

While the discussion of the IOR/Vatican Bank scandals was interesting, it seemed somewhat gratuitous given that the central theme of the book was not oriented to financial mismanagement and scandals in the Vatican. There were many insinuations about Vatican agents doing things - Catholic "men in black" - without good documentation. It would have been interesting to have the author cite the American Justice Department investigation, which presumably would have been available under the Freedom of Information Act.

Overall, the book's central premise - that the Vatican has some sort of intelligence service that has been operative for several centuries - seems substantiated in part. It is hard to sort through the information, innuendo, and associations provided by the author to tease out the real facts. Doubtlessly, fans of this tome and other Vatican conspiracy theory books will lament the lack of access to real information sources in the Vatican, its archives, and the files of various national intelligence services. However, the style is problematic at best. The reliance on secondary sources creates its own set of questions and problems, especially since the author fails to discuss them in the text and/or endnotes. And the suspension of disbelief required regarding the garnering of some of the information staggers the imagination. Fiction and fact mix in this account, and it is difficult at times to differentiate them. Read with caution and a strong sense of skepticism.

Jesus in the Underworld
By Thomas J. Hickey
Frattini says: "The Entity" is the current name for the Vatican's intelligence agency, which was founded by Pope Pius V in 1566. Its original name was the "Holy Alliance" until renamed "The Entity" in 1930 by Pope Pius XI. In 1913 Pius X founded a counterintelligence agency called "Sodalitium Pianum" to uncover enemy spies in the Vatican. In more recent times the Entity has collaborated with the US CIA and the Israeli Mossad. Also examined is the "Istituto per le Opere di Religione" (a.k.a. the "Vatican Bank"), which reports directly to the Pope and finances covert operations. The book's subtitle is "Five Centuries of Secret Vatican Espionage", and it purportedly describes the operations of these Vatican intelligence agencies from their founding to today's papacy.

The book is written both in the style of a chronological documentary with endnotes and also in the style of a novel by an omniscient author. The story-telling narrative describing plots mitigates the tedium of documentary recitation. The reader is a fly on the wall snooping on the sleuths, an insider privy to plots, comments and secrets of persons long dead.

It is unlikely that the Vatican - the world's oldest organization - has survived for two millennia in the jungle of world affairs by assuming a role and status comparable to Walt Disney's naïve and wide-eyed Bambi. It has protected itself and its self-consciously messianic otherworld mission against very worldly predatory enemies by making alliances with other equally unsavory but less unsympathetic worldly predators.

But some of the Vatican's many bargains with the Devil have been Faustian. It has become entangled in affairs that would likely not have been approved by the historic Jesus or by the early Christians, who were content merely to practice their religion without persecution by the Emperor of ancient Rome and martyrdom by the jaws of his lions in his Coliseum.

This is a believe-it-or-not book. Assuming heroically(!) no outright speculative fabrications in its pages the reader still must judge for himself how much this expose of the more sinister clandestine events actually reveals guilt by participation and how much it unjustly assigns guilt by association.

From School Library Journal
Grade 4-7–The Pepin family's troubles range from a cow that gives lemonade to disappearing kitchen utensils to their very fine neighbor falling in love with a barber pole. Like Harry Allard's Stupids, the characters' nonsensical antics offer plenty of humor. The individual Pepins, including a cat and dog, have fairly distinct personalities that come through in the dialogue. It's Horvath's arch narration, though, that adds spice and unpredictability. At each chapter's end she calls upon readers to "think" their solutions directly to her own "unusually large psychic antennae," then shares the suggestions she receives in the next chapter. Most of the "readers" hail from towns with especially unusual names such as Nanafalia and Zigzag, eventually representing all 50 states. And from their ideas, they seem to be about as confused as the Pepins themselves. Horvath's mock serious commentary sets just the right tone and makes the novel more than just a series of silly episodes. The author also responds with good humor to the suggestions she receives ("Your author declines even to comment on this"). The sly humor is just right for upper-elementary-school kids, and this book should be a fun read-aloud for younger listeners.–Steven Engelfried, Beaverton City Library, OR

From Booklist
Gr. 3-6. Using the omniscient narrator to solicit advice from "dear reader," Horvath spins a delightful yarn introducing the Pepins, a family unable to solve even the most obvious problem. Faced with the dilemma of toads in their shoes, the Pepins decide to follow the suggestion of a Kalamazoo reader, who recommends finding toadstools for the toads to sit on. When the family cow gives lemonade instead of milk, the Pepins serve lemonade-cheese to their very fine neighbor, Mr. Bradshaw. The chapters are episodic, but the story does reach a climax of sorts: the Pepins seem finally able to manage their own difficulties--prompting a family vacation to visit and thank those dear readers for all their suggestions. Absurd characters and situations and witty repartee are Horvath's strengths, and although her asides may occasionally go over the heads of her audience, the wordplay is a great argument for reading this aloud; adults will enjoy the story almost as much as children. Hafner's black-and-white sketches add to the fun and help to break up the chapters for younger readers. Kay Weisman

Review

“Following her National Book Award-winning dark comedy The Canning Season, Horvath reprises the unalloyed giddiness of Everything on a Waffle--and ups the ante with some outrageous, Pirandello-like flourishes . . . the sly running jokes about place names and brazenly funny developments keep the conceit and the comedy energetic all the way to the finish line.” ―Publishers Weekly, Starred Review

“Distinctive and decidedly hilarious . . . Young readers won't be able to turn the pages fast enough to discover the Pepins' newest predicament. . . . A delight.” ―Kirkus Reviews, Starred Review

“Horvath spins deliciously silly stories about a family rivaling Hale's Peterkins for foolishness and Cresswell's Bagthorpes for effervescent wit. Each preposterous event holds fresh surprise. . . . Hafner's line drawings visualize the shenanigans with comic amiability. Here's one reader beaming thoughts to both author and illustrator: Thanks for the laughs! More, please!” ―The Horn Book Magazine, Starred Review

You think YOU've got problems?
By E. R. Bird
I knew it would happen sooner or later! I knew it! Given enough time, I was certain that if I simply continued to read books written by Polly Horvath that eventually I would hit upon one that I liked. That's a pretty snarky statement to start off a review, especially if it's a review of a book that the self-same reviewer liked. Still, I feel some background is in order. I struggled mightily through, "Everything On a Waffle". I visibly cringed with every word of "The Canning Season". Having grown up in the same town as Ms. Horvath (long live Kalamazoo!) and attended the same church as her mother (fellow children's author Betty Horvath) I've always been rooting for her to write something that didn't take the enamel off of my teeth. At long last, she's done it. She's written a book that I think everyone can enjoy. Even people, like myself, who would rather eat hot mustard raw than read yet another precious child raised by crazy aunts tale (in which she seems, usually, to be stuck).

Of the Pepins, there are four. A mother who works part time doing peanut butter experiments, a father who's a corrugation expert at a cardboard factory, a son who is a genius, and a daughter who has no particular talents of which to speak. When we first meet them, the Pepins have toad problems. More precisely, toad-in-shoe problems. Here the author speaks directly to the readers of this book everywhere and asks them to send her their potential solutions to this abnormality mentally. This is sort of the form of the novel, and depending on how useful the readers' advice is, the Pepins either exacerbate their problems or alleviate them. As we follow them through a series of fun and funny occurrences (such as having a dapper man suddenly appear in their midst or when they deal with the fact that their very fine neighbor is in love with a barbershop pole) the reader has the chance to find a solution to various Pepin-related problems. Sometimes the answers are ridiculously easy (as when the family becomes trapped on their own roof) and sometimes impossible to solve (as when the cow produces lemonade rather than milk). Through it all, however, Horvath's uniquely skewed point of view enlivens a truly bizarre tale that'll have your kids screaming for a third, fourth, and possibly fifth read.

Initially, the book's rather like a slightly older extension of James Marshall's classic "The Stupids" series (complete with cat and dog, no less). As you continue to read it through, however, it grows on you. It's almost a stream of consciousness. A child-friendly "Ulysees", if you will. I would like to concede here and now that it is entirely possible that I'm giving this book a lot of slack because it referenced the musical "Pippin" obliquely. I'm a sucker for any book that knows its Fosse.

Through it all, Horvath throws out phrases like "dei ex machina" and makes references that will sail over children's heads only to be gratefully snatched up by their parents. And it's funny. Very very funny. When Mr. Pepin attempts to speak like an Englishman the book notes that, "The only two Englishmen that Mr. Pepin knew were Sherlock Holmes and Henry Higgins. He was doing his best to become an amalgamation of the two". If you do not find that at least mildly amusing then this is not the book for you.

To come right out and say it, I think I liked "The Pepins and Their Problems" because unlike Horvath's other works it didn't have her usual undercurrent of nastiness running beneath the action. There's only one truly nasty character in this book (a character that could creep into "The Canning Season" and not create so much as a ripple) and she only lasts for about 2 chapters. The only people who will fail to find this book amusing may be those Delaware and Rhode Island natives who could take offense at some of the pot-shots lobbied at them within this book. If those natives are so thin-skinned, however, then perhaps they didn't deserve to read the book in the first place. To my mind, this is Horvath's greatest creation. I highly recommend that you check out the audio version for car trips, by the way. There's a lot of room here for sly asides and pregnant pauses. Altogether, a joy to read, hear, or contemplate while on one's own roof.

Frolic with Polly Horvath!
By C. J. Black
As an elementary school teacher, if I could be rewarded with the privilege of spending a day of leisure with one children's book author, I would quickly choose Polly Horvath. Her manic imagination and wit and her outrageous humor is extraordinary and charming. It would be a frolic to relish and remember--she's a total "stitch!"

The Pepin family and "their very fine neighbor Mr. Bradshaw" are zany noodleheads creating and/or encountering the most improbable and hilarious experiences. Throughout the vignettes, Ms. Horvath adds flourish by cleverly engaging the the reader, as well as the characters, in asides from the commentary. It's novel and endearing.

Then there is Ms. Horvath's wordsmithery. The writing contains rich vocabulary that even an adult will find compelling. (My curiosity had me going to the dictionary on a couple of occasions!) The audience may be a tad older than 4th grade as suggested in the School Library Review; the most precocious 5th and 6th grade readers will truly reap the gifts Ms. Horvath bestows. Encountering enticing words makes Ms. Horvath as writer all the more memorable.

The experience of reading Polly Horvath for me has been something akin to making smores when you're camping and polishing them down with a glass of Pinot Noir!

A fine middle grade reader kids will love
By Midwest Book Review
Polly Horvath's Pepin Family is anything but a usual family group: they get stuck on their roof, searches for cheese in a cow which can only produce lemonade, hosts a 'neighbor-off' complete with dog throwers, and generally introduce a zany edge to living. Add Marilyn Hafner's fun black and white drawings and you have The Pepins And Their Problems, a fine middle grade reader kids will love.
