About the Author

Ethan Mordden has written extensively for The New Yorker and The New York Times. Besides non-fiction on theatre, music, and film, he is the author of the Buddies cycle of short stories. The stories, adapted for the stage by Scott Edward Smith as Buddies, played an engagement at the Celebration Theater in Los Angeles. His most recent novel is The Jewcatcher, a savage black-comic fantasy on life in Nazi Germany.

Mordden meets the eye

When Ethan Mordden writes about theater, especially musical theater, he has no peer. So if you approach this book as a survey of Ziegfeld's WORK, you will not be disappointed. However, from the outset Mordden tells us how little is really known or understood about the private life, the internal life, if you will, of Ziegfeld the man. He then proceeds to live up to this caveat by telling us as much, or as little, as he promises. The general feeling of the book is: we may not know how a man who grew up with classical music as his background ended up starting in Burlesque or, looked at another way, how a man whose very being was wrapped up in revue and burlesque gave us "The Follies" or how the "Follies" man gave us "Show Boat", but who cares, he did! Mordden is right! The only real flaw in the book is Mordden's referral to pictures, posters, artwork, etc. that we never get to see. How about a revised, illustrated, edition!

A quick, entertaining read

A good friend who knows how much I love reading about Florenz Ziegfeld gave me this book for Christmas. After taking a few glances at some pages, I had the impression that the book couldn't offer me any more information on the Great Glorifier than I already knew. I was wrong. Ethan Mordden writes about Ziegfeld's life with a light, fun, entertaining, non-scholarly style; I loved the author's sense of dry humor and slightly wicked turn-of-phrase. More than anything, I appreciated the myth-busting Mordden employs. He dispels many long-held beliefs about such matters such as the supposed romantic relationship Ziegfeld shared with Marilyn Miller and the supposed artistic and financial failure of the "Follies" Ziegfeld produced after the 1922 edition. Mordden places his readers in the heart of Old Broadway, giving us the flavor of the time -- the fun, excitement, grime, love of theatre, etc. -- an invaluable feat. The only complaint I have with the book is its lack of photographs. There are very few of them included when dozens exist.

That's Entertainment

A fine read that also provides great historical detail about the transitions from vaudeville to "legitimate theater" in New York. It's fascinating to read that the current midtown was really as uptown as you could reasonably want to travel. The great stars were emerging, but the great impresarios provided the vehicles, quite dazzling if you consider the primitive conditions for actors (theaters closed in the summer, and there was no amplification to hear thin voices as there is today). This is rich in detail and intrigue (Ziegfeld was a world-class womanizer). As for the stars, I'm reminded of a favorite quote I read somewhere from a starlet long ago: "A private railroad car is not an acquired taste. One gets used to it instantly."

About the Author

Elizabeth Enright (1909-1968) was born in Oak Park, Illinois, but spent most of her life in or near New York City. Her mother was a magazine illustrator, while her father was a political cartoonist. Illustration was Enright's original career choice and she studied art in Greenwich, Connecticut; Paris, France; and the Parson's School of Design in New York City. After creating her first book in 1937, she developed a taste, and quickly demonstrated a talent, for writing.

Throughout her life, she won many awards, including the 1939 John Newbery Medal for Thimble Summer and a 1958 Newbery Honor for Gone-Away Lake. Among her other beloved titles are her books about the Melendy family, starting with The Saturdays, published in 1941. Enright also wrote short stories for adults, and her work was published in The New Yorker, The Ladies Home Journal, Cosmopolitan, The Yale Review, Harper's, and The Saturday Evening Post. She taught creative writing at Barnard College. Translated into many languages throughout the world, Elizabeth Enright's stories are for both the young and the young at heart.

Wonderful middle-reader series

Spiderweb for Two is the last of the four books in the Melendy series written by Elizabeth Enright. Although the book is set during WWII, it was actually written about ten years after the third book and the war isn't mentioned.

It's 1944 and Mona, Rush and Mark are at boarding school. Randy and Oliver are home without their siblings and aren't happy about the prospect of the school year without them. Things look pretty bleak until a letter addressed to Miss Miranda Melendy and Master Oliver Melendy arrives. It was postmarked from New York, but the children have no idea who it is from. Inside is a poem containing the first clue in what becomes a year-long treasure hunt. Randy and Oliver enjoy the adventures as they try to solve the clues that lead them into the following summer and a big surprise.

Who is the author of the clues? Is the author the same person sending them? The answers to these questions are as much fun as the treasure hunt itself.

I enjoyed this book, but missed the rest of the Melendy family. It felt a little lonely and sad without the entire crew (except over the holidays). But most of all, I realized after I turned the last page, that this was the last of the Melendy series. I mourned the loss of the wonderful family I've loved throughout their adventures.

The best of the series-sad to see it end!

I first discovered this book in 1962 in the library of my middle school. I never knew until just this past year this was actually the fourth book in a series! Found out by accident when Googling the title. Funny thing, I remembered so much from this book - the stories told by some of the characters, the quirky characters the children have for neighbors and their friends. I decided to order all four books and read them at my ripe old age! These books took me back to a simpler, more innocent time, even though some of them dealt with World War II, mentioning the father's work in Washington, rationing, war bonds and scrap drives. This family is the one we all wanted to have - the kids actually got along with each other and did for others! Something today's kids could really learn from! I highly recommend this book and the whole series, looking aside from some of the dated aspects. It's a slice of innocence we all could enjoy! I admit, I felt a little sad at the end of this book, knowing we would not be hearing from this wonderful family again. They all seemed so real, I almost wonder how they all turned out! Buy this and the other books in the series and escape!

Grade 6-9-Monica Devon is a perfectionist and a worrywart. Fellow students find her eccentric, and her mother is driven to despair by her excessively fastidious behavior, such as her need to transfer Styrofoam beads from one beanbag chair to another so that the chairs are evenly balanced. She chants the mantra "This does not count" to negate mistakes, and in times of stress, she constructs anagrams in her head. To shift her focus from daily worries, the 14-year-old creates a game called Multiple Choice, in which she fabricates a task for herself with four options to complete it. This self-destructive game takes over her life, causing her to lose her best friend and climaxing when the child for whom she is baby-sitting falls from a window and nearly loses his eye. Finally, in the wake of the near tragedy, her parents hear her cries for help. The history of Monica's problems is glossed over with brief mentions of her making herself ill studying for exams the previous year and spinning her lock three times before opening her locker. Monica's parents and teachers seem to accept or ignore her erratic and unusual behavior until disaster strikes. Anagrams and word games interrupt the flow of the narrative. Readers who are themselves compulsive may relate to Monica's dilemma. Those looking for a more realistic, detailed portrait of obsessive-compulsive behavior should read Terry Spencer Hesser's Kissing Doorknobs (Delacorte, 1998).

Multiple Choice

One of my students told me about this book and it sounded interesting. I had a hard time reading about a teen who is victim to OCD; although she seemed all put together on the outside, her obsessive tendencies were an issue. I think the concept of the scrabble game was quite interesting, and the irony of her being controlled by her game (rather than her OCD) was intriguing. However, I felt that Monica was ridiculously hard on herself for someone who recognizes they have a problem (which is partially because of the issues she has in the first place), and I some of the plot points were turned out to be scarier and more intense than I initially suspected. I was very thankful that the book ended on a positive note, but I still felt that her issues were not completely resolved.

~Underestimated~

Multiple Choice, by Janet Tashjian, explores (with creativity for critical readers) the world of O.C.D's, a problem many of us are not concerned with, but Tashjian MAKES us understand. We see in depth of it when Monica (our heroine) is desperate to make 2 bean bags the same weight (because apparently the blue bean bag has a teeny bit more stuffing than the red).
Tashjian has dynamic anagrams, oxymorons, and word games. Monica is naturally talented in english, and in her head (!) creates wonderful word plays, juggling round letters in a word, to create another word. Her best friend, Lynn, tells her she's too obsessive, and Monica knows she's right. So, to compensate for her obsessive behaviour, she creates Multiple Choice. A game with four scrabble pieces (A, B, C, and D), in which when they're face down, Monica would then pick one randomly.

What to wear to school:
A) A normal choice, one that Monica might do anyway. (Jeans and a tee)
B) Something just plain dumb. (Pajamas)
C) Mean, completely out of character. (Junior bridesmaid gown)
D) Charitable, sacrificial choice. (Old black pants-- will donate new ones to Salvation Army)
As fate would have it--she chooses B.
You've got to read it, to see what happens. ^_^
Along the way, Monica chooses letters that hurt people, including herself. But she doesn't quit--like almost everything else in her life (98.762% in fact), Multiple Choice has become an OBSESSION. She is ruining herself but she just can't stop.

The Most Realistic Book Ever!!!

"98.762 percent of my time is spent obsessing. About what? Everything"

Monica Devon is a normal fourteen-year-old kid on the outside. She spends time with her grandfather making word games, baby-sits, and helps her mother with the daycare, but on the inside, she is a confused perfectionist. When she gets birthday presents for her siblings, she decides that the beanbags are the wrong size. While attemptiong to fix them, she rips apart the seams and spoons styrofoam balls from one bag to the other. However, when the balls make a big mess, she is determined to really be a normal fourteen-year-old.

So she makes up Multiple Choice. At first it semms easy - choose the options, pick a letter from the scrabble tiles, and carry out the act. But when she sees that her obsession has gotten worse over the game, she tries to stop. However, the game keeps drawing her in. When things go too far, Monica is afraid that nothing can help her.

This is a great book for any young teenager. It shows ou the struggle that is going on in someone's head. It doesn't seem wrong to want everything to be perfect. But when it goes to this level of obsession, it becomes a serious problem. I loved how the author pictures the issues we see in real life today because a lot of people can relate to them. Other great books by Janet Tashjian are Tru Confessions and The Gospel According To Larry.

Not very good

The person I purchased this for was in the hospital for a week. She is an extremely intelligent woman who felt this book is really lame and very lacking. She threw it away.

great tool to improve memory

I really enjoyed reading this book and I found the puzzles extremely stimulating. Each chapter was full of facts about how our brain works and what to do to keep it young. Dr. Fotuhi is obviously the most credible author on this topic with a MD and a PhD in neurology he has the necessary background in this field and is capable of writing in simple terms.
I strongly recommend this book and already bought a few copies for those I love.

Excellent!

My memory is not what it used to be. The older I get, the less I seem to remember. What I liked about this book is that it uses simple crosswords combined with practical technics to help keep your brain fit. Interlaced between each set of crosswords is a chapter on Dr. Fotuhi's 6-step program on how to improve your memory. He shows how we can remember more by doing simple things like taking dance lessons and eating more 'brain food'. It looks like it is after all possible to teach old dogs new tricks.

Excellent account of Lyme disease & current medical policy

Ms. Weintraub, editor of the science magazine Discover, provides a detailed and well-researched account of her family's struggle with Lyme disease and the devastation it can cause. Also included are other gripping case-studies, a very interesting and useful history of the discovery of this tick-born illness, and a summary of current research and findings regarding Borrelia burgdorferi (the bacteria that causes Lyme). The account of current standard medical policy as dictated by the IDSA (Infectious Disease Society of America) and the CDC (Centers for Disease Control) offer a disturbing, and often tragic, portrait of how basic science research and evidence-based clinical practice can be ignored in favor of poor and unreliable "standard diagnostic tests" and guidelines that ignore vast bodies of evidence and research, yet form today's mainstream approach to medicine. Indeed, the most disturbing part of the Lyme disease epidemic is not the disease itself (which, if detected early, can usually be successfully treated with antibiotics), but the distortion of the peer-reviewed research by a few, so-called "medical experts" that have set current medical diagnostic guidelines. The result of this is the under-diagnosis of Lyme disease by several orders of magnitude. Under-diagnosis and poor detection by the majority of doctors leads to dissemination of the bacteria n the body, which burrow into almost every tissue type, most notably the central and peripheral nervous system, heart, and joints. Once disseminated, the disease becomes more serious and can cause long-lasting and permanent damage. In late-stage, or disseminated Lyme disease, treatment becomes more difficult, as antibiotics often take months..if not years..to reach bacteria in the brain and nervous system. Worse, the bacteria can form cysts and go dormant...and survive treatment, only to cause relapse once the Lyme patient stops treatment.
The most frustrating-and tragic-aspect for patients is the lack of doctors that are knowledgeable about the varied symptoms of Lyme disease. Lyme victims can suffer severely for years while medical doctor's assure them that they are "fine". Nothing could be further from the truth.
I write from personal experience with Lyme disease. I am a research scientist with a doctoral degree in biology. I was bitten by ticks in Virginia in 1987 and subsequently became ill with severe fatigue, fevers, headaches, and other flu-like symptoms. I was not diagnosed as having Lyme disease until 2005. I was ill for 17 years despite untold visits to innumerable doctors and specialists. The doctor who ultimately diagnosed the disease (along with another tick-born co-infection, Babesiosis) worked outside of the insurance system. I was treated for almost a year with high-dose antibiotics. All of my doctors (including infectious disease specialists and neurologists from the Cleveland Clinic and University Hospitals/Case Western Reserve medical centers) did not concur with the diagnosis of Lyme (despite positive western blot bands-deemed "equivocal" by CDC non-science based standards AND a positive diagnosis for a co-occurring tick born disease AND textbook clinical symptoms presented for 17 years), and ALL told me that I did not need further antibiotic treatment. I foolishly stopped antibiotic treatment based on their recommendations when I neared the 1 year mark.
In late 2008 I started to feel ill again, and in 2009 I came down with a relapse of a full-blown neurological infection due to Lyme disease. Symptoms included, dizziness,insomnia (although previously I had suffered from Lyme induced severe and debilitating fatigue) extreme sensitivity to sound, light sensitivity, involuntary muscle spasms and contraction, especially in the throat and neck area; tingling and numbness in the hands and feet, making it difficult to type and walk in a coordinated fashion; racing heartbeat, difficulty swallowing..to the point where I could only swallow a liquid protein drink; and the physical sensation of constant panic that would not subside. I, like many other Lyme sufferers, had to quit my job as I became scarily disabled in an extremely short timespan. Despite the fact that my neck, face, and shoulder muscles were visibly jerking and involuntarily contracting ...(in addition to the previous symptoms) my well-known neurologist (a movement disorder specialist) told me I had been treated adequately for Lyme..and since he admitted he didn't know anything about Lyme anyway, he didn't believe that this was the cause (and prescribed me additional seizure-control medications that did NOTHING; and told me to come back in a year). A psychiatrist diagnosed me with anxiety disorder...the classic diagnosis for Lyme sufferers who are told it is "stress" (yeah, right, I was STRESSED because my BRAIN was being attacked and I could not work or take care of my child). I had to travel to PENNSYLVANIA because I could not get adequate treatment in Cleveland, Ohio...despite the presence of the "best" medical centers. I visited what is known as a "Lyme literate doctor"...These are doctors who are willing to treat Lyme patients with high dose, long-term antibiotics (which the Infectious Disease Society of America claims are DANGEROUS and DO NOT work) My doctor,in Pennsylvania, based on my clinical history and test results, prescribed high doses (4000 mg/day) of amoxicillin. I have now been taking these for almost a month. I have had no discomfort or problems with the antibiotic therapy. The difference between my current condition...almost normal...and what it was a month ago..is nothing short of a medical miracle for me. I have my life back...I can take care of my daughter...I feel like working again..I can type! Read! sleep! EAT solid food! My symptoms have been reduced by 95%. I have stopped taking all other medications that had been prescribed during my relapse (muscle relaxants, anti-depressants, anti-seizure medications)and I feel tremendously improved and positive about life again. I am thankful to the few doctors who took the time to review my symptoms carefully and diagnose me...(although this can even be done by typing the symptoms into GOOGLE, so it is not rocket science).
I have sympathy for the untold THOUSANDS of people who suffer undiagnosed or who have been treated improperly. It is a tragic mystery to me that in the U.S. doctors can legally perform abortions on demand, but can get prosecuted and harassed for prescribing ANTIBIOTICS due to a SERIOUS BACTERIAL INFECTION THAT HAS BURROWED INTO NERVOUS SYSTEM TISSUE. Patients CANNOT GET INSURANCE TO PAY FOR ANTIBIOTICS. Many patients become disabled.
Skeptical? Check on YouTube...see with your eyes what patients are going through-they are not "making their symptoms up"; tragically, YOUNG PEOPLE AND CHILDREN are suffering terribly.
NOTE TO MEDICAL DOCTORS AND PUBLIC HEALTH WORKERS: a small medical panel that does not disclose the "why" or the scientific justification for conclusions CANNOT BE USED FOR A BLANKET POLICY PRESCRIPTION. Thousands of "anecdotal stories" (as they are called, and dismissed by.. members of the Lyme IDSA panel) of symptoms and treatment response DO CONSIST of scientific evidence. This type of evidence is called deductive science...where one uses observation and evidence from the field to form a conclusion. The great scientists of our day use this method all the time. A famous example would include scientists of the stature of, say..Charles Darwin! When reviewing INDUCTIVE SCIENCE results, (based on results of experiments published in peer reviewed journals) ALL published studies should be reviewed and included in the review, or summary science article. What has happened is that the IDSA results DO NOT include all studies and research conducted on Lyme bacteria. A good review paper in a journal, or a review by a panel, must, at least, include in their methods the NUMBER OF STUDIES PUBLISHED IN THE SCIENTIFIC LITERATURE THAT WERE UTILIZED IN THEIR CONCLUSION VS. THE NUMBER OF STUDIES ACTUALLY PUBLISHED AND AVAILABLE IN THE SCIENCE LITERATURE (this is called SAMPLING EFFORT..A BASIC METHOD USED AND REQUIRED IN PUBLISHED SCIENCE PAPERS); these should tabulate ALL RESULTS,not just a few- and then provide a recommendation based on the consensus of the scientific/medical community. Recommendations used to determine health-policy and insurance coverage should be open to CONSULTATION by the wider community of research scientists and doctors. Only then should recommendations be translated into policy. We are talking lives here. Lyme health policy as is currently practiced ignores a huge amount of biological and clinical information, and thus, current public health policy is dictated by SHODDY SCIENCE CONDUCTED by A FEW PEOPLE. What a pity. Those interested should watch "Under our skin", a documentary about Lyme disease, to learn more.

Explains the public health disaster that is Lyme Disease

Many have suggested people give this book to their doctors. Great idea, but do not be surprised if their docs just dismiss the whole idea of chronic Lyme. Patients would have better luck getting their docs to watch the Lyme documentary Under Our Skin. I did that with a few of my Lyme-denying docs, altho it was like pulling teeth.

I was misdiagnosed for decades, endured multiple orthopedic surgeries, had neurological and cardiac symptoms up the wazoo, many ER visits. Turns out it was all chronic Lyme disease. My whole family has it, and I believe my mother died of it. Lyme is the new Great Imitator; like syphilis, it can mimic a hundred other conditions: gout, MS, ALS, arthritis, A-fib, ringworm, trigger-finger, restless leg syndrome, panic attacks, depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, migraines, ocular migraines, multiple chemical sensitivity disorder, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue,.............on and on and on..

Get thee to an ILADS Lyme specialist post haste. You will be on the road to nowhere if you stick to "mainstream" docs. These Lyme-denying docs are killing us. Recently I tried to guide two women to appropriate Lyme treatment - they both died, ages 57 and 67, because they were either too far gone, or their "mainstream" docs did not treat aggressively enough. One doc did not even mention Lyme on the death certificate (he eventually and reluctantly started treating her for Lyme), and I am reporting him to the State Medical Board.

This is a public health DISASTER. Think "Tuskegee Experiment" times a MILLION.

A MUST HAVE book to navigate lyme waters!

Thanks to Pam Weintraub for combining her plethora of areas of expertise to compile such an amazing, factual, MUST HAVE book! Having been a lyme disease survivor and fighting the disease for over 25 years, I've spent over 6 figures and have seen over 40 doctors, been in countless hospitals and told to go home and die twice. I have spent time in both the IDSA and ILADS camps. I am a lyme war veteran, and my family has it as well. Having read many books on lyme, I am 100% confident to report that this book provides accurate, factual information and wraps it in a real-life "story", (which is Pam candidly sharing her life with us), that makes it relatable for the reader as Pam herself is a lyme veteran. Her journalism and science background is apparent and refreshing, combined with her writing style. Having read countless books on lyme, this is the FIRST book I recommend to anyone I know who has lyme and doesn't know where to turn or what's really going on, and why they can't seem to get accurate help and are confused as to "lyme politics". It's all about luck

Statisically speaking, luck has a normal distribution, that is, it has a bell shaped curve. Most people are in the middle with an average amount of luck, but some people are at an extreme point on the curve and are unlucky all the time (like that character in Lil Abner who walked around with a black cloud over his head), and some are at the other end and are lucky all the time. So goes life.

It's St. Patrick's Day and there is a rainbow in the air. Grandma Mazur stumbles into a duffle bag full of money - lots of money. She thinks that it is lucky money and hers to keep. Let the good times roll. She is off to Atlantic City. But other people have claims on the money. The story has an interesting cast of characters including an ex-jockey who thinks that he is an invisible leprechaun (he is always lucky, but manages to fumble it away); of course there are Stephi, Lula, and Connie from the bailbonds office; Diesel appears from Stephi's past - another man in her life; a short guy hired by Grandma Mazur; the gangster Delvina; and a horse to add to the adventures and misadventures. Of course there is the money.

You will have to read the novel to see how it all shakes out. The novel is not great literature, but is extremely funny. ROFL. Some scenes towards the end had me laughing so hard I had trouble continuing.

It is a short novel, and a quick read, at 166 pages with 28 lines per page somewhat widely spaced in easy reading type. It contains what a friend would call earthy language. I would personally classify it as PG-13.

Stories as always interesting. I like the way Janet writes, she spends more time on the actual story and leaves all of the sexual stuff a tantalizing suggestion without getting into all of the details, our imagination can take us the rest of the way(if that's where we want to go if not) lets get back to the story. I love it.

Great for STARTERS only!

Good little book, but I'll take her full version any day for upper COLLEGE LEVEL and grad school level work ("A Writer's Reference"), even at twice the price. It's been worth every dollar I paid for it and then some! I've used many ref guides: Ms. Hacker outstrips them all by light years.
But this little guy is very handy, and will get you where you need to go with citations and such as long as you're into basics. PERFECT for high schoolers and for freshmen/sophs in college, but beyond that: GET THE BIG BOOK ("A Writer's Reference")! It's too good to pass up!

A must have for any student! Do not pass up!

I have taught high school junior English for 16 years, and Hacker's manual is the best I've found...by far.
First, since many schools have abandoned grammar altogether, many students have little grasp on basic skills. This manual allows students to take a refresher course, complete with detailed examples. Also, this manual helps students with tedious writing strategies that are not taught in some schools. For example, voice, tense, person and tone are all covered, as well as transitions, introductions and effective conclusions. It's easy to read and understand. Finally, in the area of research, MLA, APA and Chicago are all covered. In this fashion, one can compare and easily see the differences each style requires. Often, a student is taking 3 different classes that require 3 different formats. This book succinctly transcends from one to the next.
An invaluable section is that of citations. It teaches how to cite, how to avoid plagiarism, and also how to integrate quotations into your paper. Many students don't know how to paraphrase, as some teachers allow copying straight from the encyclopedia to the notebook paper! Beginner or Profi

This is a very good reference tool to assist the beginner or the profi. I have used this book since my freshman english class, ten years ago. I have recently used it to assist German friends learning english here in Germany. Glad to see it is still around.
