During the Second World War, the campaign in Italy was the most destructive fought in Europe – a long, bitter and highly attritional conflict that raged up the country’s mountainous leg. For frontline troops, casualty rates at Cassino and along the notorious Gothic Line were as high as they had been on the Western Front in the First World War. There were further similarities too: blasted landscapes, rain and mud, and months on end with the front line barely moving.

And while the Allies and Germans were fighting it out through the mountains, the Italians were engaging in bitter battles too. Partisans were carrying out a crippling resistance campaign against the German troops but also battling the Fascists forces as well in what soon became a bloody civil war. Around them, innocent civilians tried to live through the carnage, terror and anarchy, while in the wake of the Allied advance, horrific numbers of impoverished and starving people were left to pick their way through the ruins of their homes and country. In the German-occupied north, there were more than 700 civilian massacres by German and Fascist troops in retaliation for Partisan activities, while in the south, many found themselves forced into making terrible and heart-rending decisions in order to survive.

Although known as a land of beauty and for the richness of its culture, Italy’s suffering in 1944-1945 is now largely forgotten. This is the first account of the conflict there to tell the story from all sides and to include the experiences of soldiers and civilians alike. Offering extensive original research, it weaves together the drama and tragedy of that terrible year, including new perspectives and material on some of the most debated episodes to have emerged from the Second World War.

Very good, if not for a few oddities

I've never read anything by James Holland before. Apparently I'm going to have to get used to historians (to say nothing of a President) who are younger than I, which is something of a jarring experience. The current book, however, is a well-researched, well-written account of the course of the campaign in Italy, basically from the last battle of Cassino up through the end of the war. The author spends a lot of time (more than used to be the fashion) discussing the impact of the war on civilians, and he also spends a lot of time discussing the lives of individual soldiers on both sides of the lines.

Cassino was one of the most frustrating battles of the war, for the Allies, and the author starts with it, recounting briefly the earlier battles, then recounting in considerable detail the successful attack by the Poles. He also spends a lot of time talking about the famous attack out of the Anzio bridgehead by Mark Clark's Fifth Army, and interestingly defends Clark's decision to turn towards Rome and capture it, as opposed to moving to the fabled Valmontane, where Alexander had ordered him to go. Holland discusses this incident, and the produces a map which shows the main German retreat routes from the Cassino front. Only one of them goes through Valmontane, and the author lets you know this was an alternate, less-important, route. The four further north, out of reach of Clark's forces no matter what he did, were the significant ones. Very interesting thesis.

That, in some ways, was the highlight of the book. There's a great deal of information here about various forces and battles, later in the campaign, and much of the information is very well-presented and the judgements are thoughtful. There isn't, however, anything in the way of ground-breaking scholarship for the rest of the book.

I did have a few misgivings. At times Holland's understanding of military technology seems a bit weak. One passage includes a discussion of something called an "Ofenrohre". I'm not the world's greatest expert on German militaria, but I know a lot of other amateur experts, and none of us had ever heard the term. It turns out "Ofenrohre" means "stovepipe" in German, and that this was the nickname for the Panzerschrek. *That* we would have understood, but he didn't include the name in the text or anywhere else. At other points he seems to get confused about gun calibers and things of that nature. He also has an odd habit of referencing U.S. Infantry divisions by their divisional nicknames, and occasionally getting them a bit wrong. So for instance, he refers to the 92nd "Buffalo" Division, when of course it should be (if you're going to do it this way) the 92nd "Buffalo Soldier" Division. The term "Buffalo Soldier" traces back to the Indian wars, when said Indians thought a black person's hair looked like buffalo fur.

Those few misgivings aside, this is an interesting, well-written book. It includes a considerable amount of information, and the text is well-illustrated by enough maps for you to follow the action as to what's going on. I really enjoyed the book, and would recommend it.

Occupied Italy and its' rescue.

I was in Italy during WWII. Came to the U.S. in 1948. I have always felt that historians had not given the trials that Italy suffered enough credence. This book told it all. Not only the loss to the U.S. and british soldiers, but the atrocities that the Germans commited to the Italians but also to the armies of the Allies..

An excellent history of a forgotten conflict

Italy's Sorrow is the story of the often forgotten Italian campaign in WWII. Despite Soviet calls for a "second front" from 1942, somehow the 1943 invasion of Sicily, and subsequent slog up the Italian peninsula, did not even count as a second front in WWII, despite tying up a large number of German troops, especially after the Italian surrender, and then switching sides to fight alongside the Allies.

Nonetheless, the war in Italy was an important part of WWII, and James Holland tells the story well. All sides of the conflict are covered off - the Allied forces, including Free French and Polish troops as well as the GI's and Brits, and the German defenders under Kesselring, with the Italian people caught in the middle, whether as partisans, auxliaries to one side or other, or civilians.

The campaign is analysed from a military standpoint, but the impact on Italy itself is never overlooked. In Masters and Commanders and The Storm of War Andrew Roberts questioned the value of the Italian front after the capture of Rome, but Holland never considers the question - it is clear that to leave simply half of Italy in German hands and settle into defensive positions was not an option for democracies who claimed to be fighting for freedom. German atrocities against Italians are detailed, and the impact of the Allies was at times scarcely less brutal, especially the French colonial Goums.

When reading about D-Day and the second battle of France, the impact on civilian life - the collateral damage, in today's terms - is made clear. What is also clear after reading Italy's Sorrow is that Italy suffered far worse - perhaps rightly, as a former Nazi ally - and that this suffering can largely be laid at the feet of Il Duce Mussolini himself. A case could probably be made that Nazi Germany might have been better off with Italy remaning a friendly neutral in WWII, trading with Germany but not co-belligerant with it. With no North Africa and Greece to ensnare German troops to rescue Italian adventurism, the Eastern push might have been quite different in 1941-42. Certainly Italy would have been better off without entry into WWII, which ended with much of the country in ruins and a popultion starved and shell shocked by war.

The first incarnation of this book about a teen whose mother becomes president came out in 1984. Now White has updated it without doing a total rewrite, ensuring that some of the best parts, particularly the family interactions, remain. Sixteen-year-old Meg Powers is used to having a mother in office, but running for president is a horse (or donkey, in this case) of another color. Her candidacy seems like such a long shot that Meg and her younger brothers don’t worry much at first. Then she wins, and life as Meg knew it is over. With such a long time span to cover (primary season through post-inauguration), White sometimes tells rather than shows, especially during the first half of the book. But once the family moves to Washington, she vividly captures what it’s like to live under a microscope, especially for subjects who didn’t want the attention in the first place. Besides offering a solid look at the political system, this has very strong characterizations, especially of Meg, trying desperately to be her own person, and of her mother, who is both a cool, ambitious politician and a guilty parent who knows she is rarely giving her family what they want and need. Meg has a fun, voice. She is smart and sarcastic as she deals with the difficulties of being the daughter of a senator running for President. It's informative but often is preachy.

Story is great but this reprint is low quality

I have read and reread (and loved, especially the first one) all three Meghan Powers books in their original editions. I am grateful to Hawk Publishing for reprinting these three books (now called the "President's Daughter" series) so that more people can enjoy them, but I do feel that people should know that these reprints are not high quality. They are trade paperbacks with bindings that seem sturdy enough, but the text is not at all crisp -- in fact, it looks like the publisher may have enlarged the pages from the original mass market editions on a Xerox machine and then reprinted these new editions from those copies. I am basing this guess on the fact that the text looks enlarged and somewhat blurry.
The covers of all three of the reprint editions are hideous; the first one shows a girl who looks to be about 8 or 10 years old instead of a teenager. ...
If you can get past all that, these books are marvelous to read. The first book in particular was very entertaining and educational to boot. I learned a lot about the nomination process used at the Democratic National Convention. Meg's "voice" is unique and distinctive, and a lot of the book is laugh-out-loud funny. Again, I am grateful to Hawk for reprinting these, even if the quality is a little disappointing.

About the Author

MICHAEL L. WEINSTEIN, the leader of the movement to restore the Constitutionally mandated separation of church and state in the United States military, is the founder and president of the Military Religious Freedom Foundation. He is an attorney and businessman who served on active duty in the U.S. Air Force as a judge advocate (JAG) for ten years and also worked for more than three years as legal counsel in the Reagan White House. He lives in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

DAVIN SEAY, a reformed evangelical Christian, is the son of a career naval officer. The author of ten books, he lives in Woodland Hills, California.

Witness to Evangelicals feeding on the Unchurched

A fast paced, quick read, Weinstein's account of the troubles at the Academy raises many disturbing questions. Unfortunately, the military routinely invades privacy and stories of antisemitism are hardly new. Therein lies the problem with anecdotal evidence and the way the issue has been framed here. The separation of church and state, indeed civilian control of the military, has never been all that secure, resting, in part, on vague notions of privacy. Because Weinstein assumes the military is subject to clear, established Supreme Court principles, we are led to believe his is a reaction to an insubordinate, insurgent military. His stance does not allow us to ask whether the Court's principles are sufficient to protect everyone, including agnostics, and if it is a trustworthy agency to resist the attacks of evangelicals, particularly on those lacking religious affiliation.

Essential reading for all

This book should be mandatory reading for every American who cares about why Americans are dying in Iraq and Afghanistan, and what's secretly destroying our military from within. Our government is infected with a quiet, creeping cancer, and most of us have no clue. The threat is real, and national security at stake, and failure to educate ourselves on this issue could lead to the total destruction of everything we hold dear as Americans. We've had 8 years of warning and desruction, and assaults upon our Constitution, but how many think it's over? Guess again. Read this book.

Wonderful page turner, a great look at a Mother's love!

I absolutely loved this book and disagree with other reviews that suggest Ellen should have simply called the birth parents and tried to work something out with them. That would likely never happened with the exception of a brief period of transition. This book portrayed a mother's love regardless of how you became a parent. Not only that, it had you asking yourself, would you, could you, make that call? There is a real emotional pull between doing what is right and NEVER wanting to give away your own child. I think that the way she goes about finding out the truth is a very real look at not wanting to show all your cards until you absolutely have to. Her reasons weren't completely selfish either, she clearly had the best interest of her child at heart or else she would have taken the advice of those telling her to just forget it. She knew it would haunt her always. Then you have to consider the fiction angle of a great writer. We wouldn't read the book if the story was sweet and simple and it wouldn't be a page turner without the drama and suspense of Ellen working the story through to find the truth and even when you think the truth is not in her favor, you are surprised to find you can't put this book down until you know the "truth". To me this book was so good, it stayed with me. I found I couldn't simply finish the book and move on to my next book. It was an emotional journey that had me just needing to take it all in and ask myself what I would do in the characters position's. My husband wouldn't even have to conversation with me when I tried to ask him what he or we would do. Just an impossible situation to ever have to consider. Loved it! Loved it!

I Hated This Novel So Much!!

I don't even know where to begin with this thing! First, let me say I'm basing my review on the audio book version of "Look Again", while I don't think it would make much of a difference, Mary Stuart Masterson's monotone narration sure didn't help the tale at all.

I was going to compare this story to one of those lousy, awful Lifetime Network Movies, one of those flicks starring Victoria Principal or Loni Anderson, but "Look Again" even makes those stories seem like high art.

The basic storyline as outlined in every other review posted, is that a reporter gets one of those "Have You Seen Me?" postcards that feature missing kids on them. She thinks the boy on the postcard looks like her adopted son and begins to investigate. Fair enough, a basic idea that could be interesting.

Unfortunately Lisa Scottoline populates her novel with the most unappealing and unlikable characters imaginable. I can't remember the last time I've read a novel where I actually came to loathe the protagonist of the story as much as I hated Ellen. Her character was astoundingly stupid.She is supposed to be a "working Mom" and yet fails utterly in both catagories. She is a working reporter, that is sent by her editor to work a specific story, which she blows off, lies about and just generally disregards. She is a "loving Mom" supposedly, but seems to leave the kid with a babysitter at the drop of a hat, seeing him briefly in the morning, usually arriving home after the kid is asleep? She has no problem running down to Florida for a few days, again leaving her "son" in the care of a nanny, and worst of all, when she suspects that she and her son's life may be in danger, she rushes right home.....well make that, she rushes right home after deciding it would be a good idea to stop off and have a quickie with boss first?! Wow, what a mom.

To top it off, Scottoline just continues to introduce one vile character after another. The jealous co-worker, the un-involved father, the angry ghetto resident. Evey male in the novel is either mean, vindictive, dumber than a bag of hammers, easily manipulated or one-dimensional heels.

Most people throw away fliers that say "Have you seen this child?" Features writer Ellen Gleeson doesn't- she stares at the image of Timothy Braverman wondering if her adopted son has a twin. As a reporter, it is in Ellen's DNA to question, so it isn't remarkable that the picture of the child continues to trouble her. And even though her newspaper is instigating cutbacks as a response to hard economic realities, Ellen remains obsessed with the face of the missing child. Juggling a jealous coworker, an intriguing boss who looks like Antonio Banderas and an important newspaper deadline, Ellen finds it impossible to turn away from the fear that has invaded every aspect of her life. As wound up and anxious as an overly-stimulated three-year-old, Ellen spends her off hours researching her adoption and tracking persons involved. No matter the answer, Ellen can't stop asking the questions.

"Ellen spent the afternoon in Quality Time Frenzy." Whatever else, Scottoline can write circles around her contemporaries on the pandemonium created by small children. Much of the energy in the book is frantic, at least a third of the books eighty-one chapters devoted to Ellen's interaction with her son. Whether it's a screaming tantrum or a mother-son conversation, Will literally jumps off the page (he has the right name). I desperately wanted this kid to take a long nap. A nap wouldn't have hurt his mother, either. In the context of the story, I found this hopping from intimate child care to serious issues disconcerting. Add in Ellen's crush on her boss and the story gets a bit off balance. I don't know when to be anxious or amused. Then there are the throwaway lines, like, "Time to start stalking."

The thriller is energetic and entertaining, but the uneven emotional tenor keeps the reader off balance until Ellen finally faces the wrong end of a loaded gun, a criminal's plan gone awry. If you are a fan of James Patterson, this novel will please; for anyone wanting more nuanced treatment of character and plot, this author's flashy prose and impulsive quips may not satisfy. Scottoline has an impressive list of thrillers and a loyal fan base. Look Again, for all its scattered energy is a tale of an adoptive mother's worst nightmare come true, morphing into a particular threat with lots of mama-drama. New mother Ellen Gleeson is faced with an uncommon dilemma. At least she has an Antonio Banderas look-alike for comfort. Luan Gaines/2009.

Wake Up, HeroYou awake to the sound of the phone ringing.“Hello?”You hear a man’s voice. It is muffled. “We’ve got Julia.”Your head is cloudy with a dream. “Who?”“Julia, the girl you went out with last night.”Julia, yes, the girl you met at the restaurant the other day. Pretty Julia, with whom just last night you had a delightful first date, followed by a promising first kiss.“Julia. Yeah. She’s great.”“We have her.”“Okay.” The dream recedes. “Wait, what do you mean?”The voice says, “We have kidnapped your girlfriend. If you ever want to see her again—”“Whoa, she’s not my girlfriend,” you say. “I just met her. I mean, I had a good time with her and all, but I wanna take it slow with this one, I think.”“We understand,” the voice says. “But she’s new to the city, and presently, you’re all she has. If you ever want to see her again, I suggest you do as we say.”She’d mentioned over drinks that she had just moved from Chicago, but it didn’t hit home to you then that she probably has nothing going on for herself yet. Which means she’ll be counting on you to be her tour guide and the whole thing will probably get way too serious way too fast. And now you’re expected to save her from kidnappers? You might as well just move her into your place and be done with it.“Look,” you say. “Have you told her that you called me?”The voice asks, “What difference does it make?”“Well,” you say. “If I were to pass on saving her and someone else took care of it, or if your plot was foiled by the cops, then I might still be able to see her again without us having this whole you saved me from kidnappers thing forcing us into something really serious.”The voice sighs. “She gave us your number.”Fuck!“Do you want to talk to her to prove that she’s all right?”“No!” you shout.The voice speaks more softly. “Look, she heard me ask that. Don’t be a dick. I’m gonna put her on.”Your spirit plummets as you listen to the phone change hands.“Julia?”She’s crying. “I’m so sorry about this. I know it’s weird. But honestly, they called everyone else and I had to get them in touch with somebody.”“It’s okay,” you say. “I understand.”“I just don’t want you to think I’m rushing things,” she says, panting. “I like you and all. But I’ve let things get too serious too early on in my past relationships, and I really wanted to take it slow with you. Ridiculously Perfect, and Perfectly Ridiculous

Bob Powers has written a hilarious and very adult version of the classic Choose Your Own Adventure type of book, skewering everything from dotcom mania to a Landmark Forum-type "personal development workshop." The latter advertises that "There is a GEYSER OF PERSONAL POTENTIAL waiting to burst out of you. Find out how to COAT THE WORLD with AN EXPLOSION OF YOU." As you try to figure out the best way for your hero, or, perhaps, anti-hero, to save his girlfriend (or, you know, not), who is being held by kidnappers for $50,000, Powers you to a sex club, an abortionist, 9/11 and beyond. He somehow manages to cram in all kinds of current events with a general sense of generational angst and relationship drama, all while you flip around madly trying to find the best ending. Except all the endings here are kindof messed up, and all the funnier for it.

I read all the time on the subway, and only rarely do I miss my stop because I'm so engrossed in a book. That happened with this one, so be forewarned.

Bob Powers proves his skills of observation and imagination are totally unlimited with this choose your own adventure book for adults. The possible outcomes are as diverse as they are hilarious. It's a great read and would make the perfect gift for anyone you know who is nearing or in their 30s, and still trying to figure things out.

Secret operatives

`Death Wave' moves fast as it breaks from NSA to Tajikistan, the Canary Islands and the White
House. Most of the action centers around super secret special operatives of the National Security Agency. They are searching for 12 suitcase size nuclear bombs, but the question is: Who has them? and Where are they going to be used and how?
The book jumps from location to location each separated and labeled with where it is and the day and time. This lends a movement to the story and is not at all confusing. Some of the technical details, actions and operations are over the top, leaving a bit of incredulity. There is little depth to the characters, but some how you still care about them.

One minor point; but to anyone who knows the area around NSA, there is an off putting description of its' location; "tucked in between the Patuxent Freeway and Route 295." No one that I know of who works there or lives around there calls it- the Patuxent Freeway, - this could have been checked and verified easily, which leaves one wondering what other "facts" have been skimmed over.
Despite all this, the action scenes are really page turning and there is room for a follow-up.

Believable, fast paced technothriller with literally a cliff hanger finish

Years ago I quite enjoyed the Saucer stories by Stephen Coonts, but this, the first of Deep Black stories I've read, is in another league. Non-stop action in exotic locations around the world by real characters that make mistakes and are supported by intriguing smart technology in the field, made this a very enjoyable book to read. Suspense dramatically builds over the last third of the book as the National Security Agency team race against time to determine the details of the terrorist plot, gain approval to counter the attack on the Americas and struggle against a deadline to deploy adequate forces to eliminate the deadly threat.

I'll definitely check out the other books in the series!

Looking for adventure, look no further

Good, action filled books are the norm for Coonts books and this one is no exception. Charlie and Lia are knee deep in adventure while back at home the politics tries to undermine all their efforts. Well written and a fun read.
