In a Gilded Cage (Molly Murphy Mysteries), by Rhys Bowen

Irish immigrant Molly Murphy and her New York City P.I. business are in the midst of a sweeping influenza epidemic and a fight for women’s suffrage that lands her in jail. Her betrothed, Police Captain Daniel Sullivan, finds her, but he hardly has time to bail her out, what with Chinese gangs battling for control of a thriving opium trade. The only consolation Molly can take from her vexing afternoon in the clink is that it made her some new friends among the Vassar suffragists---and brought her a pair of new cases.

For the first, Emily Boswell is convinced her miserly uncle stole her inheritance and wants Molly to uncover the truth behind her parents’ lives and deaths. Second, Emily’s college roommate Fanny Poindexter wants Molly to find proof of her husband’s philandering so that she can leave him without one red cent. But when Fanny dies and her husband claims she’s a victim of the epidemic, it’s more than Molly’s conscience can take.

Rhys Bowen’s Agatha and Anthony Award--winning historical series continues to breathe life into the past with its wit and charm and its complete sense of early-twentieth-century New York, which makes In a Gilded Cage her most accomplished mystery yet.

From Publishers Weekly
Near the start of Anthony-winner Bowen's delightful eighth Molly Murphy mystery (after 2008's Tell Me, Pretty Maiden), two Vasser alum friends persuade the Irish-born detective to march for women's rights with the VWVW (Vassar Wants Votes for Women) in New York City's annual Easter parade. On Fifth Avenue that Sunday morning, Molly meets Emily Boswell and other West Side socialites, all of whom wind up getting arrested for disturbing the peace. Molly's intended, police captain Daniel Sullivan, rescues the women from jail, but is wholly unsympathetic to their mission. The down-on-her-luck Emily, who works in a drugstore, hires Molly to find out the truth about her missionary parents' deaths and her loss of inheritance. Another Vasser grad has a philandering husband to track. As ever, Bowen does a splendid job of capturing the flavor of early 20th-century New York and bringing to life its warm and human inhabitants. From Booklist
Eighth in the Molly Murphy mystery series, following Tell Me, Pretty Maiden (2008), this installment outshines the others in character development and plot complexity. Details of Molly’s new cases are knit together with the accoutrements of 1918 New York City life—automobiles, women’s rights, social climbers, and the flu epidemic—bringing a visceral reality to the story. Conflicted over a potentially inequitable marriage to her fiancé, Captain Daniel Sullivan, and enjoying the company of Sid and Gus, her outré lesbian friends, Molly carries her own, compelling internal struggle to her work. She’s hired by her friend Emily to investigate a family mystery that has caused a miserable childhood and an uncertain financial future. Simultaneously, Molly is employed by a wealthy acquaintance to determine her husband’s fidelity or lack thereof. When the acquaintance dies suddenly, supposedly from flu, followed by another woman in her circle, Molly suspects murder. Don’t miss this great period puzzler reminiscent of Dame Agatha’s mysteries and Gillian Linscott’s Nell Bray series. --Jen Baker

Another winner by Rhys Bowen featuring Molly Murphy
By Linda Holman
This book, In A Gilded Cage, is the eighth entry into the Molly Murphy series.

Set in the early 1900's, Molly owns her own private detective agency, of which she is the sole employee. This in itself is rare for that time period, as most women were raised to marry well and have a lot of children, and encouraged to stay at home to raise them.

Molly is very independent, curious and maddening to her police detective fiance, Daniel Sullivan. She puts herself in harm's way more than once in order to solve her cases. He can't resist her, though, as she makes friends easily and has a heart of gold.

I just adore Molly, and count myself blessed by the women that have gone before us, as Molly and her friends do not even have the right to vote yet. An education is considered frivolous, and a woman alone is considered suspicious.

This series is one that just keeps getting better and better, and is a quick, delightful read. Get ready for some surprising twists, and some good news for Molly. I can't wait for the next one!

Mystery Amidst Influenza and Suffrage
By Mark Baker - Carstairs Considers
Molly has just recovered from a strain of the influenza epidemic that is sweeping New York City in the spring of 1903. But she doesn't let that stop her from joining Sid, Gus, and some of their Vassar friends in marching for women's suffrage. While that effort ends with them in jail, it also provides Molly with two new clients.

First is Emily, a young woman left to fend for herself after her miserly uncle kicked her out. Emily wants to know more about her dead parents. Then Fanny hires Molly to prove her husband is cheating on her. Things are progressing on both cases when someone dies. Was it a bad case of the flu or was it murder?

As always, this book was a great trip back in time. The set up is steeped in history. When the cases start, the book picks up. I actually found both of them quite interesting and puzzling.

Molly has really grown as a detective, and that is evident here as she actually pulls off solving both cases. Her growing ability is actually quite fun to watch. And she continues to be an interesting character I love to spend time around.

The cases her also provide Molly a good chance to think about her future as the potential wife of Captain Daniel Sullivan. As always, I was both hot and cold to him, but I seem to soften with every book.

These books aren't typical mysteries but as much about life a century ago as the case at hand. And I love them for it. If you want a glimpse of another time and place, pick up this series today.

Another fine Rys Bowen read
By K. McGinnis
I started reading this Rys Bowen, Molly Murphy series from books at the library....really enjoyed it.

The character is feisty yet caring and devoted to her clients and friends. A lovely story...all of them are.

It is rather important to start reading the series at the very beginning to understand how her current life evolved.

Late Edition: A Love Story, by Bob Greene

A loving and laughter-filled trip back to a lost American time when the newspaper business was the happiest game in town.

In a warm, affectionate true-life tale, New York Times bestselling author Bob Greene (When We Get to Surf City, Duty, Once Upon a Town) travels back to a place where—when little more than a boy—he had the grand good luck to find himself surrounded by a brotherhood and sisterhood of wayward misfits who, on the mezzanine of a Midwestern building, put out a daily newspaper that didn't even know it had already started to die.

“In some American cities,” Greene writes, “famous journalists at mighty and world-renowned papers changed the course of history with their reporting.”  But at the Columbus Citizen-Journal, there was a willful rejection of grandeur—these were overworked reporters and snazzy sportswriters, nerve-frazzled editors and insult-spewing photographers, who found pure joy in the fact that, each morning, they awakened to realize: “I get to go down to the paper again.”

At least that is how it seemed in the eyes of the novice copyboy who saw romance in every grungy pastepot, a symphony in the song of every creaking typewriter.  With current-day developments in the American newspaper industry so grim and dreary, Late Edition is a Valentine to an era that was gleefully cocky and seemingly free from care, a wonderful story as bracing and welcome as the sound of a rolled-up paper thumping onto the front stoop just after dawn.

From Publishers Weekly
Greene, a veteran Chicago columnist and author (When We Get to Surf City), offers a glowing tribute to the glory days of America's newspapers and the simpler society they so aptly reflected. Currently a CNN contributor, he remembers his days as a copyboy and other apprentice positions at the Columbus Citizen-Journal and the Columbus Dispatch, two rival newspapers in Ohio's capital city, with the noisy reporters, prying editors, artful pressmen and artisans in the composing room. Greene laments the passing of a proud tradition from the peak year of 1984 with 63.3 million circulation sliding to 50.7 million per day, noting its generational gap of 63.7% of daily readers being 55 years or older contrasted with 33% of readers ages 25–37. Refreshing, respectful and comical, Greene's press-time recollections are meant to be read slowly and savored as the current chaotic computerized information business replaces newsprint, banner headlines and night owl editions. A must-read, nostalgic yet provocative look at newspapers when they dominated
By Amazon Customer
Late Edition is a nostalgic, fascinating, inside, and definitely sweet peek of a young reporter's foray into the newspaper industry. It left me with a clear understand of the magic it was to work for a newspaper but it also left me deeply pondering. If the death toll continues to rise among newspapers, what does this mean for our communities that relied on newspapers for not only current events, local coverage but also for bonding us together? Can YOU imagine your local newspaper fading away? I can't.

Greene, long one of my favorite authors, did not disappoint me.
By Blaine Greenfield
Way back when God was a little girl, my undergraduate major
at Rider University was journalism . . . I wanted to someday be
a sports columnist and so when I heard that Bob Greene wrote
about his days as a young journalist in LATE EDITION: A LOVE
STORY, I knew that was a book that I just had to read.

Was it ever a trip down memory lane!

Greene, long one of my favorite authors (WHEN WE GET TO SURF
CITY, ONCE UPON A TOWN, etc.), worked as a copyboy and in
other apprentice positions for the COLLUMBUS CITIZEN-JOURNAL
and the COLUMBLUS DISPATCH, two rival newspapers in Ohio's
capital city, just a few years before I began college . . . he recalls
those days with affection as he writes:

* In some American cities, famous journalists at mighty and
world-renowned papers changed the course of history with their
reporting. . . . [that didn't matter to Greene; his joy was
in the fact that each morning . . . ] I get to go down to the paper again.

Or when he comments that:

* I found myself not wanting days off, even though I had to take
them. Nothing that could happen on a day away from work could
match the delights of the sports desk.

I also liked his account of lessons he learned while a young
reporter, particularly this one about his coverage of a tennis match:

* I suppose if you want to be resolute about it, there were two lessons
to be taken from having written the story. One: When you write
something about someone, you should anticipate the moment when you
will have to look that person in the eye. Two: If you were correct in
what you wrote, you won't have to worry when the person's eyes
meet yours.

Toward the end of LATE EDITION, Greene tells about
his visit to the pressroom of one of the papers that he had
worked at (that was in the process of closing) . . . it touched
me and got me recalling how much I missed not having
two newspapers delivered to my doorstep every single day.

Compelling and entertaining
By Delores Ashworth
In typical Bob Greene style, Late Edition drew me in from the first page. In this book, he chronicles the beginning of his newspaper career over three summers at the Columbus Citizen-Journal. The book is filled with anecdotes of these summers: his first summer as a copy boy, then working for the sports department, and in his last summer, at the news desk. The reader feels the passion, joy, and ambition of this likeable (and a little naive) young man as he learns the newspaper business. It's all exciting to him, from cleaning paste pots and delivering food orders to assisting at the 1968 National Democratic Convention in Chicago. He is willing to do anything it takes to learn his craft. This book also serves as a great tribute to the newspaper business, an American institution that we are in grave danger of losing. It's a book not to be missed!

Why Marines Fight, by James Brady

"Why Marines Fight is a candid collection of courage and esprit de corps that serves as a reminder that when America needs a real hero, it doesn't need to look beyond its military." ―The San Antonio Express News

United States Marines, for more than two centuries, have been among the world's fiercest and most admired of warriors. They have fought from the Revolutionary War to Afghanistan and Iraq, in famous battles that have become the bone and sinew of American lore. But why do Marines fight? Why do they fight so well?
James Brady, to some an unofficial "poet laureate" of the Corps, interviews combat Marine veterans from World War II to Afghanistan, and their replies are in their own individual voices, unique and powerful. What results is an authentically American story of a country at war, as seen through the eyes of its warriors; a story of the motivations and emotions behind this compelling title question. Included are accounts from Senator James Webb and his Corporal son, Jim; New York City Police Commissioner Ray Kelly; Yankee second baseman (and Marine fighter pilot) Jerry Coleman, and of teachers, fireman, authors, cops, Harvard football players, and just plain grunts.
Why Marines Fight is a ruthlessly candid book about professional killers not ashamed to recall their doubts as well as exult in their savagely triumphant battle cries. A book of weight and heft that Marines, and Americans everywhere, will want to read, and may find impossible to forget.

Praise for James Brady:

Why Marines Fight

The Scariest Place in the World

From Publishers Weekly
The reasons are almost as numerous as the Marine combat veterans quoted and profiled in this engaging collection of reminiscences. Many cite the training and discipline drilled into recruits and the determination not to let down one's buddies. Others are motivated by vengeance after a friend is killed. Gen. Smedley Butler, after a career invading banana republics in the early 20th century, opines that he fought mainly as a gangster for Capitalism. Some fight for the thrill of it (the heavy machine gun made you feel like no one could touch you), and some fight out of the sheer cussedness personified by Sgt. Dan Daley, who shouted, Come on, you sons of bitches! Do you want to live forever? as he led his men against the Germans in France in 1918. Parade columnist Brady (The Coldest War), a Korean War Marine vet, sketches vivid thumbnails of his interlocutors and sets the right leatherneck vibe—sympathetic, irreverent, comradely—to draw them out. Some tales meander; this is very much a meeting of old (and a few young) soldiers catching up and telling war stories in a glow of nostalgia. Still, Brady assembles from them an unusually personal and revealing collage of the nation in arms.

Unanswered Question
By Avid
As a former Marine combat Grunt, I was looking forward to reading this book. However, after enjoying Brady's novels about the Corps, I found this non-fiction work to be less than expected. From the guy who is listed as the "Corps' poet laureate", this work is much less that expected.

The title asks the question, "Why do Marine Fight"? However, the question is not answered. Rather, Brady writes a series of vignettes about people he apparently knew, none of whom deal with the issue - why DO Marines fight?

From my personal experience, Marines fight for a myriad of reasons, not the least of which is the brother Marines to their left and right, for the Corps and for their country. Marines fight because, as volunteers, they are and always have been trained to fight since 1775. Never giving up a piece of ground without an argument, Marines fight ferociously because that is what is expected of them. They took "impossible" positions in WW I and "impossible" island fortresses during the pacific campaign in WW II, never yielding, but always on the offensive, even when cut off and without support, as at Guadalcanal. What makes a man go forward into almost certain death? Again, it's his fellow Marines, those who have also been trained to close with and kill the enemy, and protect their comrades, which is why so many Marines have been awarded the Medal of Honor for selfless acts such as covering a grenade with their own body to protect fellow Marines.

Brady had a good idea, but in the writing it fell way short of his objective. Marines fight because that is what we are trained and expected to do. It is also because we have leaders and NCOs who are trained to lead and lead from the front, not from a desk. Every Marine is a rifleman and every Marine is trained to taker command, if needed. That's why and how we fight!

Our motto says it all: Semper Fidelis! ALWAYS FAITHFUL!

A good collection of Marine stories, but poorly written
By Eric & Lisa
This book gives unique glimpses into the personal lives of Marines past and present--rightfully portraying the average Marine as the unknown hero next door.

What would have made this book an epic is if the author would have kept his political opinions out of it. He agreed with one Marine that he quoted, saying that war is purely apolitical. Yet sprinkled throughout the book [and laid on pretty thick in the last chapter] were his personal opinions that the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq are--in his words--silly. This discredits the objectivity of his work, reducing it from greatness to an okay book from a guy with an ax to grind.

Also, he tends to get diarrhea of the mouth when talking about trivialities (i.e. himself). He kept mentioning how important he was when writing articles for Parade magazine. It's completely irrelevant...especially when discussing something as intriguing--and nearly sacred--as the motivations of a Marine.

If you are able to filter out the bias and "white noise", the individual stories are decent.

Why Jim Brady wrote this book
By Smithroz
I certainly don't know why he wrote this book, for Brady never actually systematically tried to answer the question posed in his title Why Marines Fight. Some of the individual stories of men he interviewed were very good, but they get buried amid references to Brady himself and the continual name dropping. Supposedly Brady had a wealth of material as Marines in droves responded with letters to him when they heard about the proposed title to the book. Expecting to read the stories of unknown Marines, I was disappointed when so much of the book covered the stories of Marines turned famous politician such as James Webb and John Warner of Virginia and the late John Chaffee of Rhode Island. Whether that was Brady's choice or those of his editor, I wish far more space had been given to the stories of lesser known Marine and no space at all to John Warner's penchant for dating beautiful and filthy rich women. An ever greater waste of space are the political comments on events in Iraq and Afghanistan scattered throughout the book on a random basis. These opinions bear no relevance to Brady's purported topic and show no special insight on Brady's behalf. They merely echo the conventional wisdom of Brady's peers on the celebrity journalist beat at Parade magazine.

Nobody could have foreseen what would happen the day that Rose McKenna volunteers as a lunch mom in the cafeteria of her daughter's elementary school. Rose does it to keep a discreet eye on her third-grader, Melly, a sweet, if shy, child who was born with a facial birthmark that has become her own personal bull's-eye. Melly has been targeted by the mean girl at their new school and gets bullied every day, placing Rose in a no-win position familiar to parents everywhere. Do we step in to protect our children when they need us, or does that make things worse?

When the bully starts to tease Melly yet again. Rose is about to leap into action―but right then, the unthinkable happens. Rose finds herself in a nightmare, faced with an emergency decision that no mother should ever have to make. What she decides in that split second derails Rose's life and jeopardizes everyone she holds dear, until she takes matters into her own hands and lays her life on the line to save her child, her family, her marriage―and herself.

Lisa Scottoline has thrilled millions with her inspiring female characters and her exploration of emotional justice, writing about real issues that resonate with real women. In Save Me, she returns with her most stirring and thought-provoking novel yet.

At the start of this gut-wrenching stand-alone from bestseller Scottoline (Think Twice), an explosion rips through the nearly empty cafeteria of Reesburgh (Pa.) Elementary School. Lunch mother Rose McKenna leads two girls to safety before racing to rescue her own daughter, Melly, but Rose soon learns that she may face both civil and criminal charges for her heroics because one of the girls she saved was seriously injured in the resulting fire that killed three school staff members. The tension rises as the united front presented by Rose and her lawyer husband, Leo Ingrassia, begins to disintegrate in the face of media demands, legal maneuverings, and social pressures. Rose must also deal with school bullying (Melly has a noticeable facial blemish), difficult legal problems, and her husband's reaction when a secret from her past is revealed. Scottoline melds it all into a satisfying nail-biting thriller sure to please her growing audience. 400,000 first printing; author tour. (Apr.)

From Booklist
Suburban mom [Rose McKenna] is forced to make a split-second decision after an explosion goes off in the school cafeteria in which she volunteers. Should she rescue her own daughter, Melly, trapped in the bathroom, or lead the girls standing in front of her, who constantly bully her daughter, to safety? Her choice reverberates throughout the little town of Reesburgh, Pennsylvania, as she is cast as the villain by the local news anchor, parents, and the school. While her attorney and husband construct a defense plan that includes filing a lawsuit against the school, [Rose] sets out to seek the truth behind this mysterious, accidental fire. With the help of a construction worker who may know the cause of the explosion as well as an incognito visit to a local factory, [Rose] slowly unravels the truth and along with it some hidden secrets in Reesburgh's dark past, including one horrifying buried memory of her own. At the quick pace of a thriller, Scottoline masterfully fits every detail into a tight plot chock-full of real characters, real issues, and real thrills. A story anchored by the impenetrable power of a mother's love, it begs the question, just how far would you go to save your child? --Annie McCormick

"Every mom is an action hero."
By E. Bukowsky
Lisa Scottoline's "Save Me" is a domestic drama about a stay-at-home mom, Rose McKenna, who has a precocious eight-year-old daughter, Melly, from her first marriage, and a baby boy, John, from her second. Rose is unhappy about the teasing that Melly endures because of a prominent birthmark on her face. McKenna is determined to stop the bullying and, partly to keep an eye on her child, volunteers to be a "lunch mom" in school.

Unfortunately, a catastrophe in the cafeteria not only brings grief to innocent people but also makes Rose into a pariah. She is unfairly blamed for committing an unforgivable act, and must fend off pushy reporters and furious neighbors. Adding to her burdens is a painful secret from her past that she has never revealed to her husband, Leo.

The novel begins promisingly. Rose is sympathetic, compassionate, and a devoted wife and mother. She is infinitely patient and always seems to know how to make her kids happy. Scottoline points out that people who live in small communities may be close-knit and supportive. However, when tragedy strikes, they sometimes unjustly vent their anger on outsiders.

The characters in "Save Me" are thinly drawn, and the contrived and melodramatic story lacks nuance, realism, and substance. It is disappointing that, as the book progresses, Rose's activities become so outlandish. After uncovering a possible conspiracy, she drops her kids off with friends and starts behaving like Nancy Drew, sneaking around in disguise and pumping people for information. We have come to expect more from the talented Scottoline, who has written a number of compelling and suspenseful works of fiction.

I have always loved Lisa Scottoline books. I picked this one up hardcover the moment I saw it. An overwhelming disappointment.
It starts out well, with an explosion in a school and a mother's choice. She makes the obvious but difficult compromise to save all of the children, and would have succeeded, but one child runs back into the building to retrieve an electronic toy and is badly injured. It's all downhill from there.
The plot is ridiculous and strains credibility. Although the husband and wife are supposed to be deeply in love with a good marriage, he seems very peripheral and uninvolved, except in his interactions with his stepdaughter. I got very bored reading about the adorable things baby John did, ad infinitum. Melly's birthmark was way overworked. The whole book was boring, and at the end, the main protagonists actions were stupid, as was the reaction to those actions, and everybody believed her story with no shred of proof. Well, except for the security guards actions toward another character, and why they would take her and tie her up at their first encounter is never explained. She tries to enter a company party, babbling about a murder that was written off years ago as an accident, and their reaction is to drag her off and tie her up? Were they in on this convoluted plot from the beginning. Did they call someone? The response was over the top and incriminating, which I guess is how the author had to tie up the loose ends of the slithery plot going nowhere.
Did Lisa Scottoline actually write this book? There were hints of her writing here and there, but I don't think she did.
Anyway, it was boring with a supremely unbelievable plot and this is my last Lisa Scottoline, at least to buy. Maybe she can redeem herself in another book, but I'm not going to pay for it.

RIDICULOUS!
By Renee Wadler
This seems to be my week to play the Grinch - After not commenting for months I have felt compelled to submit 2 negative reviews in one week. However, I must admit, "Save Me", makes the previous book I commented on seem a veritible prize winner.

"Save Me" is the most inane, childish, just plain boring book I have read in years. I forced myself to finish it - and even then I did some skipping. Does Scottoline really expect readers to be able to suspend disbelief to the point where they can accept a "Super Mom" who, figuratively, "leaps tall buildings" in one jump? The main character in this book does at least that.

She single-handedly overpowers a well over 6', 250 lb. (or more) Hit-Man,who is intent on killing her; she brings down Heads of large and respected corporations; and, the coup de gras, she brings down a US Senator and has him held for Murder, ALL BY HERSELF.

The stupidity is magnified, if possible, when she gets these people arrested and charged by the FBI and other law enforcement officials, without any REAL evidence! All this is done largely on the basis of what our "Super Mom" figured out MUST have happened.

This is becoming longer than I intended, and my only excuse is real anger and disappointment that an Author who I once enjoyed and respected, has sunk to these unimaginablely low depths.

Suffice it to say, Save Me reads like a comic book; it will bore most thinking Adults, and should have been marketed for Pre-Teens.

From Publishers Weekly
Happiness is in many ways gender specific, says Baker (What Happy People Know), because women's brains are wired to allow them to feel more, and more frequent, positive feelings than men. Baker, founding director of Canyon Ranch's Life Enhancement program, and Greenberg (What Happy Companies Know) draw on positive psychology to show women how to find happiness. Negative traps prevent women from achieving happiness, they say. These traps are easily recognizable: perfectionism, thinking you'll never be happy without a lot of money or a man, focusing on work as opposed to relationships. Happy women, on the other hand, have a sense of personal responsibility, the ability to find opportunity in adversity, a sense of purpose and courage. Writer Yalof helps make all this accessible, but many of these ideas are truisms, and the authors sometimes characterize women with facile generalizations, for example: Most women don't know themselves well enough to determine what their special qualities are. Still, women who find themselves in one of the negative traps may find help here in learning how to look on the bright side. (July)

A Positive Perspective for Women
By Yvonne Gittelson
I bought this book after really appreciating What Happy People Know, also by the same author. Both are excellent self-help resources, inspiring and affirming. Dr. Baker approaches self-help concerns from a positive orientation, and recommends against endlessly examining and reviewing the problem, which so many others promote. Instead, he starts from the point of view of what works, and what can we learn from people who seem to be able to maintain their happiness no matter what life throws at them. In this book, the emphasis is on exploring the typical issues that cause women to get off-track and feel bad about themselves, like perfectionism and image issues, along with the pursuit of material comfort and money. There is excellent advice, and affirming reminders are offered for overcoming challenges to our self esteem and feelings of self-worth. My dog ate my first copy, so I actually re-purchased this book! (I think the dog was trying to remind me that happy women know that having a dog is an important part of keeping humor in my life...!)

Who Wouldn't Want More Happiness?
By Sharon Michaels
Focusing on the positive has the power to change your life for the happier. It sounds simple enough but for many, it takes desire, practice and a certain amount of discipline. What Happy Women Know by Dan Baker and Cathy Greenberg, shares the why's and how's for focusing on a happier life.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book! After all, who wouldn't want more happiness? What Happy Women Know by Dan Baker and co-author Cathy Greenberg is an interesting, insightful and hopeful book to read. It's a good mix of information, inspiration and practical how-to advice.

Honestly, I was a little skeptical to read a book about women's happiness written by a man. The author, Dan Baker, Ph.D., earned my respect with his insightful research and twenty years of day-to-day work with the women who visited the famous health/spa facility, Canyon Ranch in Tucson, Arizona. Dr. Baker is the founder of the Life Enhancement Program at Canyon Ranch.

This well thought out paperback book is filled with real life examples for using positive psychology to change your life for the better.

What if you could learn from other women who've come before and found ways to be happier and more self-satisfied? Wouldn't you want to tap into their wisdom? If the answer is "yes," then you'll want to read this book.

Here's an example of a couple of the lessons from What Happy Women Know:

Happy women understand the three steps to self-forgiveness:
*Acknowledge the lesson you learned.
*Recognize that you're now in a different place.
*Know that you may make a new mistake tomorrow.

Here's another one: Men and women experience happiness differently. For men happiness is the pursuit of power and for women, happiness is the pursuit of relationships.

Powerful and thought-provoking pearls of wisdom are prevalent throughout the book. By reading them you can't help but feel the power of taking positive action. As I read What Happy Women Know, I knew what I was reading could make a "happy" difference in my life.

Here's a look at some the chapter titles:
~ Perfectionism: You Can't Get There From Here
~ The Revenge Rut
~ I'm Nothing Without Him
~ Transcending Loss
~ Happiness and Health
~Ten Qualities of Happy Women

These few chapter titles should give you a clue to the overall approach that Dr Baker takes in this book - you control your level of happiness and happiness begins inside.

This is a book you'll want to read, think about and take notes. Self-help is simply that - helping yourself live a fuller and happier life. Reading, absorbing and applying the practical wisdom found in this book could change your life for the happier.

Dr. Baker helps the reader discover and embrace this often-elusive emotion called "happiness." Happiness is very personal and because of this, I'm sure this book will affect each of us in a uniquely personal way.

I definitely recommend What Happy Women Know.

Empowering!
By Cinnamon Girl
I'm halfway through this book and wanted to write a review now because of the one negative review which might dissuade someone from getting this book. If you have the opportunity to peruse it in a bookstore, you'll see for yourself that there is a lot of sharp insight. I get the feeling from reading that Dan Baker really likes women and wants for them the happiness they (we) say we desire. He really cares. The authors address many typical behaviors and beliefs women have about themselves and who they think they're suppose to be/how they're expected to behave that are counterproductive to happiness. It doesn't matter that there is discussion of things most of us have heard/read/thought about before. This book takes those things and expands on them and, personally, I have an even clearer understanding...or more passion about changing those things/concepts/beliefs/self-expectations that are still, sometimes subtly, a part of me. Highly recommended book.

The ultimate relationship repair from the bestselling author of Boys Will Put You on a Pedestal (So They Can Look Up Your Skirt) and a psychologist with decades of experience

Every committed relationship goes through rough patches. What's the difference between those that move forward and those that disintegrate? Knowledge, effort and a desire to strengthen the bond. In Actually, It Is Your Parents' Fault, Philip Van Munching and Bernie Katz cut through unhelpful self-help trends to lead readers to self-knowledge and to show how:

--Even your earliest childhood experiences dictate who you fall for

--The unconscious aspects of your personality both attract and repel your partners (often at the same time)

--Your history indicates how you'll fight, how well (or poorly) you'll communicate, and how you'll deal with tough times

--To use insight into yourself to fix your relationship

With humor and sound advice, Van Munching and Katz can help any reader on the road to a happier romance or marriage.

Constructive Help
By Aliki
I love the union of the psychologist and writer that has made this book useful and an easy enjoyable read. Not only is human behavior explained simply and clearly in pshycological terms, but excercises guide you through how to begin to change negative behaviors. There is no quick fix to relationship problems, hard work and serious reflection are needed to change and this book is a great guide as to how to do that work.
