About the Author
SUSAN CRATER is the granddaughter of Sister Parish and co-author of Sister: the Life of Legendary Decorator Mrs. Henry Parish II. LIBBY CAMERON worked for Sister Parish and now runs her own design firm. In 2001 they started SISTER PARISH DESIGN, a fabric and wallpaper company based on designs from the Parish-Hadley archives. Their products are frequently featured in magazines such as Architectural Digest, House & Garden and House Beautiful.

SISTER PARISH DESIGN
OUR ROOMSWhen I was in college in New York I had the luxury and good fortune of visiting many spectacular houses with my grandmother Sister Parish when she called on her friends on the weekend. Sunday lunch was a popular time to entertain with her generation, and it is a shame this tradition has gone out of style in our busy lives. Dedicating a block of time to a Sunday lunch means you are really dedicating the entire day to leisure, as a big component of the Sunday lunch is a cocktail before lunch and wine during the meal, rendering you hopeless for whatever afternoon activities you had previously scheduled.Many of the houses I visited with Sister were unforgettable. Brooke Astor's house in Briarcliff, New York, stands out as the scene of colorful verbal skirmishes between Mrs. Astor and Sister, both very competitive women. It was also the most representative of a way of life we don't see anymore. All of the big houses in the country had pea stone driveways so the sound of cars on gravel was the first impression, followed by the smell of lovely pots of flowers surrounding the front door or wood smoke from the fire within, depending on the season. The door at Mrs. Astor's beautiful Georgian house would be opened by the familiar major domo of the house, whom my grandmother knew well as she visited often. Sister would always call out "hoo hoo," and the response from far away would be "we are in here," meaning in the beautiful large living room or a smaller cozy library that was almost a sun room. Usually a fire would be crackling and drinks offered up--sherry or something light. I remember the feeling of being frozen in time as we sipped our drinks and looked out at the beautiful gardens, chatted about the news of the day, and then went into the dining room for a traditional meal with lots of spirited conversation. Finally, completely satiated, there would be coffee back in the library or living room. Obviously the house's settings were amazing as Sister and Mrs. Astor had collaborated on its beautiful rooms, but more important, in that grand Georgian house one was made to feel comfortable and welcome. If we sat in the large living room, there were master paintings scattered about, but you never felt intimidated or overwhelmed. Seating arrangements were cozy and the upholstered furniture wonderfully comfortable.We had similar lunches at the Whitneys' house on Long Island, a rambling Dutch Colonial revival, which embodied a grand, yet livable country house, or her childhood friends' houses in New Jersey, typically smaller clapboard farmhouses filled with odd family heirlooms and bursting with color and charm. No matter the era of the house, the recipe was the same: extremely comfortable living rooms or libraries with brightly colored chintz and a mix of assorted eclectic family paintings and objects, delicious three-course meals that began with piping hot soups and finished with old-fashioned cakes and custards, and throughout, attention to the moment--no rushing to finish and get going. I don't think I ever saw anyone from that generation rush. It must have been considered very bad manners.The rooms that we visited in these great houses were well worn and well lived in. You had the impression that countless parties, family meals, or just plain hours of reading the Sunday paper had taken place in these rooms. That is what good decorating is--the transformation of a house to be aesthetically beautiful as well as useful for the family that lives there. Comfort and lack of intimidation were the foundation these houses were built on. It was not unusual to see a typically tattered dog bed underneath an old master painting. The rooms were designed to be used and they were, to their fullest.Billy Baldwin was a great proponent of urging his clients to live in their living rooms and he paid homage to Sister's living room in his discussion, "How to live in a living room," from the book Billy Baldwin Decorates, which includes some effective pointers:When it comes to color think warm. Deep vibrant colors like brown, red, or burnt orange make a room intimate without reducing its size. I like to see furniture covered with chintz in a traditional room or with a wonderful contemporary pattern in a more modern room. I love to seeobjects around--not a clutter, but enough so everyone knows these rooms belong to someone--things happen here. One of the nicest living rooms in New York belonged to one of my colleagues, Mrs. Henry Parish II, who knows just how to live in a living room. The walls were dark brown. The curtains were the color of coral and there was wonderful English garden chintz on all of the big overstuffed chairs and sofas. She had arranged the furniture in three groups--one of them around the fire. Here was where she sat every day to have a cup of tea and read the mail. Here was where the family gathered drawn by the firelight on chilly afternoons. The room was equally beautiful when filled with people or when you were alone there. That is what I call a room that's lived in.

LIBBY CAMERON When we started with projects at Parish-Hadley, there was never a moment given to the possibility that any one of the rooms would not be used and loved and lived in. Each room was as important as the next although the purpose may have been different. And as I learned well, each room has to connect to the others, not in terms of the colors used, but in its aesthetic; each room needs to be its own while simultaneously being part of a whole. I remember Mrs. Parish talking about rooms and colors swearing at each other, and the importance of a thread that tied all of the rooms together. Comfort is an element that connects rooms and is what Parish-Hadley was known for. A room was never designed without thought given to how it would be used and what was important, how the light fell and how many people lived there, how the lamps or lighting in the room would draw you in and enable you to read.Living rooms were never planned with just one place to sit and often had three or more seating areas, and were cozy enough so that one or many people could be comfortable. Parish-Hadley was a wonderful school for so many. Ingrained in us all was the importance of imaginative warm rooms that had to be friendly, comfortable, and timeless. 
MITCHELL OWENS What I think the "graduates" of Parish-Hadley have in common is a certain respect for history without being slavish, a breadth of vision that reveres quality over specific periods or styles, and an understanding of real comfort, no matter how formal the client's lifestyle. I don't think I've ever been in a room executed by a Parish-Hadley alum that isn't eminently livable. The rooms themselves may not be my cup of tea, per se, in terms oflooks, but the comfort level is pretty much steady across the board, don't you think? There's inherent practicality, too, an attention to the sorts of amenities that many designers of otherwise striking rooms often forget. (There is a world of difference between a room styled to be beautiful and a room that is actually decorated for living.) I once spent an evening at a star designer's apartment, and though the sitting room was spectacularly outfitted, I had to clutch my glass all evening--there was no place to set a drink down! That sort of foolishness would never occur in a room with a Parish-Hadley bloodline. At least, I hope not. 
MARIO BUATTA The thing about English houses that is so great is that they are always played down with chintz and sisal carpeting. Sister did the same thing. She did not like a room that was only filled with "important furniture." 
JANE CHURCHILL Obviously I come from a family of decorators, being Nancy Lancaster's niece; Nancy's sister, my grandmother Alice Winn, never worked as a decorator, but she had fantastically good taste and always did it much more on a shoestring. She could turn a hovel into something. I remember the house she had at Sandwich--a really nasty, suburban-looking brick house. By the time she added lattice balconies to it, painted it a different color, and planted a garden in front of it, it was drop-dead gorgeous. But she always did it in a much cheaper way than Aunt Nancy, not that money with Aunt Nancy was key. I will always remember she had something red in every room. They both had an eye for things that some people didn't seem to see. I think you are born with an eye or you're not. Nancy Lancaster and Alice Winn had incredibly wonderful, comfortable houses with bathrooms that always looked like other people's drawing rooms and my grandmother always had very, very good food. They were American. We were brought up with American backgrounds, not just a British background. In those days comfort was more unique. My cousin Lady Wissie Ancaster had wonderful taste, but that also came because she had the whole line of Aunt Nancy, Granny, and the whole lot in her. They didn't just make homes, they made wonderful homes. They were never pretentious.Nothing was ever pretentious. Dogs were everywhere, pee stains on the edge of the curtains. Not that it was ever dirty, but they were absolutely lacking in any form of pretention. They were such personalities themselves. The women had such energy.Nancy Lancaster was funny and amusing and she treated everyone the same, from a duke to the dustman, and they all adored her. She was really happy in her garden with all the gardeners. The staff she had was there for years and they all adored her because she was kind and funny. She always had an eclectic group of people around her. They were just very talented.

Twisted Sister

The title of the book refers to the name of a fabric and wallpaper company, not to the work of legendary designer Mrs Henry "Sister" Parish, II. The authors, one the grand-daughter of, and the other, the former assistant to, the late decorator, developed this book as a clever promotion for their business venture, Sister Parish Design. With contributions from 25 decorators, including Albert Hadley and Bunny Williams, and magazine editiors, such as Mitchell Owens and Carolyn Englefield, various comments are grouped together in chapters and sub-chapters as a chatty how-to book of sorts, for lack of a better description.

There is a Forward by Albert Hadley and an Introduction in three parts by each of the authors and the illustrator. The chapters are Our Rooms, Beginnings, Elements, Furniture, Color, Materials & Textures, Collections, Outdoor Rooms, and The Courage to Decorate. A section titled Recommended Reading lists two pages of books on interior design. The section, Contributors, gives a very brief and vague 3 or 4 line c.v. on the designers and editors. A one page Acknowledgement thanks those who helped with the book, ending with the woman they only refer to as Sister, who provided the inspiration, they say.

The watercolor illustrations are an odd sort by Mita Corsini Bland, wife of popular Manhattan art and antiques dealer Gerald Bland. Similar in style to those by the late interior designer Mark Hampton, they lack the benefit of his understanding of what best to show, however. Most are not illustrations of Mrs Parish's work, but rather a somewhat muddy assortment of the contributors' work. They apprear to be largely taken from snapshots because only details or corners of rooms are shown. The benefits of using drawings instead of photographs were not generally exploited here. The exception is the dustjacket, with the fabric on a prominent bergere in Mrs Parish's living room changed from her trademark chintz to a blue & white print from the authors' fabric line!

There are many typos and inaccuracies, too numerous and perhaps too tedious to list here. There has been some criticism that many of the contributors had never even met Sister Parish. But this reviewer does not agree; I never met the 16th century architect Andrea Palladio, but he has been a great inspiration to me!

This is not a bad book, and generally rather attractive. But many will be disappointed in most aspects of content. All except the most devoted fans of Sister Parish should just wait until the book is further discounted. The definitive book on Sister Parish remains to be written.

More than a disappointment

This is a book that really does not add anything to a knowledge of Mrs. Parish's design "philosophy". I believe that she was a brilliant but totally intuitive
designer who had a very good eye. The visual presentation of this book is washed-out, pale, and faded -- like the amateurish watercolor illustrations by a Ms. Bland (!). Some of the watercolors are painted from well-known photographs (Mrs. Astor's library by Mr. Hadley, p.122). Wouldn't it have been better to show the vibrant red scheme in a photograph? And what of the terrible "bar set up on an antique desk"on p. 14? Why is this awful sketch in the book? Mrs. Parrish's memory certainly deserves something better
than this mish-mash!

Welcome Advice from Old Friends

I don't read a lot of books on design, favoring those on architecture as a general rule, but having known Sister Parish from summers in Maine during my childhood, I recently purchased this book. I was immediately drawn in to the conversation the book so perfectly captures about what goes into creating a sense of place that transforms a room from an empty box filled with things into an expression of who its owner is (or would like to be!). The use of watercolors in place of photos makes for a series of focused guides for the eye, directing the reader's attention to specific elements and details of a room to enhance the content of the accompanying text. Reading this book is both an aesthetic and practical experience, for in addition to pretty pictures of beautiful rooms, there are to be found among the anecdotes and stories of working for design clients helpful tips on small touches that go a long way towards helping a room come alive. It would make a great Christmas present!

A good book by a good guy, this will please fans, but won't reveal much they don't already know.

Big Papi: My Story of Big Dreams and Big Hits

I have been a Red Sox and die-hard Boston sport fan since the mid 50's and have read many sports books especially on the local teams and personalities. Big Papi was a very fast reading and insightful story on major league and minor league baseball, the business and individual personal side, as well as the plight of the many foreign players bonding together in a strange land and the brotherhood that remains among them.

A completely different caring side of Pedro Martinez for his fellow countrymen was a interesting sidebar. Tony Massarotti from the Boston Herald does a excellent job in telling David Ortiz's story, a real gentle caring giant with much more than the "extraordinary ability to perform under pressure" and the leader that ended fifty years of misery for me. I wish my father and grandfathers were still alive to have enjoyed it. Thank you Papi.

Great Book About A Great Person

You cant help but love Big Papi. This book is just further proof of Papi's triumphs on and off the field. He overcame a lot to get where he is today, and this book tells you the whole story. He is a unique individual that has given back to the community ten fold. Hes a great baseball player, but he's even a better human being.

Big Papi is too cool

This book is a combination of a narrative by David Ortiz and some background information by Tony Mazzaroti. Both aspects of the book are informative, especially the Mazzaroti part when he is explaining the rational the Twins used in releasing Ortiz. It has been mentioned in other reviews; the use of the words Bro' and Killin' get a bit weary, but it does feel as if you are having a conversation with Big Papi. The part of the book I really enjoyed is the insight as to how it is to grow up in the Dominican Republic and try to work your way through farm systems to the majors. I have always found the process of becoming an elite athlete fascinating and this book just reinforces most athletes do not "come from nowhere" and become superstars. They have to work hard, have some luck and hope for the best. It appears to have worked out for David Ortiz and he realizes just how lucky he is.

Something Old, Something New

Wow! I read THE COUNT OF MONTE CRISTO as a teen, and it's always been a favorite of mine, so I was delighted to learn that Jeffrey Archer's new novel was a modern version of that well-loved tale. But A PRISONER OF BIRTH is a good deal more than a new spin on Alexandre Dumas--it's a fascinating, edge-of-your-seat thriller that actually makes a few valid points about the world today. From courtroom to prison to freedom with a glamorous new identity and a burning desire for revenge, the young hero of Archer's book is a worthy contemporary counterpart of Edmond Dantes, the "Count" of Monte Cristo. But you don't have to be familiar with the Dumas original to enjoy this terrific story. It's a good, old-fashioned page-turner that succeeds on its own merits. Highly recommended.

Jeffrey Archer's " A Prisoner of Birth" opens on a cheerful note. An East-Ender named Danny Cartwright gets down on one knee and proposes to his pregnant girlfriend, Beth Wilson, who happily accepts. Bernie, Beth's brother and Danny's best mate, joins the happy couple at a pub to celebrate. The revelry ends abruptly when four drunken men pick a fight with Bernie and Danny, who depart with Beth to avoid a row. Unfortunately, the three are confronted by their antagonists and a vicious brawl ensues, leaving Bernie dead and Danny arrested for his murder. Although Danny's conscientious young attorney, Alex Redmayne, does his best to defend his client (who refuses to plead guilty to a lesser charge of manslaughter), the four men from the pub, who call themselves the Musketeers, concoct a bogus but credible story and stick with it.

The actual killer is Spencer Craig who, ironically, is a barrister specializing in criminal law. Craig is a sociopath who has convinced his three friends, Gerald Payne, an estate agent, Lawrence Davenport, a television, actor, and Toby Mortimer, a drug addict, whom he has known since their days at Cambridge, to lie on his behalf. The wealthy and privileged Craig has contempt for the uneducated Cartwright and is elated when the jury finds Danny guilty. The sentence: twenty-two years in Belmarsh high-security prison.

"A Prisoner of Birth" is reminiscent of Dumas' classic "The Count of Monte Cristo," with Danny playing the role of Edmond Dantes, who was also the victim of a gross miscarriage of justice. While in prison, Danny undergoes a major transformation. His cellmate, Nick Moncrieff, is an sophisticated and cultured individual; under his tutelage, Danny loses his accent and begins to speak and behave like a gentleman. He also takes courses and proves to be an intelligent and gifted pupil, especially in mathematics and business. Although his future seems bleak, a series of unforeseen events provide Danny with the opportunity to clear his name while taking revenge on the people who wronged him.

Archer has written an engrossing tale that is blessedly free of the sensationalism, gore, and explicit language that is common in today's fiction. Archer's style brings to mind the novels of yesteryear, with a beginning, middle, and end, and no distracting flashbacks. On the downside, Archer offers no shading in his characterizations; the villains are contemptible and the heroes are loyal and steadfast. Since most people are somewhat familiar with the Dumas story, there are few surprises in store. Still, once the reader becomes invested in Danny's fate, he will be interested to see how the young man's problems are eventually resolved. There is something here for everyone: scenes of intense courtroom drama, a touching romance, high-stakes financial intrigue, and a few delectable twists and turns in the final chapters. Although "A Prisoner of Birth" is not subtle, edgy, realistic, or brilliantly written, it is a good old-fashioned yarn, and that alone will earn it an eager audience.

A VERY SATISFYING READ

I have to say that I thoroughly enjoyed every page of this one! Of course I have to admit to being one of those people who feel that the work of Alexandre Dumas in his Count of Monte Cristo is one of the fifty best novels in the English language. This book by author Jeffrey Archer is a wonderful update and take- off from that classic work by Dumas. This novel takes place primarily in England, although does move about a bit later in the book.

The plot line has been pretty well covered here by other reviews so I will not dwell on that at length. Suffice to say that we have a poor young man who is set up and framed by four quite wealthy and privileged young men for the crime of murder. Danny, our hero, is an uneducated mechanic who cannot read or write. He is brilliant though, and through a series of fortunate circumstances, ends up sharing a cell with two remarkable individuals who transform Danny's life. Again, the author is sticking to the Dumas work pretty closely.

This work is completely filled with twists and turns and just when you think you have if figured out, or that all is lost, the author neatly twirls events and you are off in another direction. The plot is rather complicated but is surprisingly easy to follow as are the well developed characters. This can be and should be classified as a thriller, but it is so much more than that. Archer's knowledge of the legal system and prison life allow the story to be told in a realistic fashion (yes, I admit that the author does stretch a few things here and there, but hey folks, this is a novel meant to entertain, not a T.V. documentary...yawn). This work also takes a close look at the English class system, at its worse and the play between the lower and upper classes of society, i.e. the have and have not's.

This is a rather large novel, which in a way is unfortunate, because if you are like me, once you finish the first page or two, you will be hooked and you are going to be there for awhile. Now I fully admit to loving to read a good revenge book and this is one of the best in that genre I have read in quite some time. No spoilers here, I hope, but I found this to be a very satisfying read!

Recommend this one highly. If you are into this type of novel, I cannot see how you will not like it.

Another winner by Rhys Bowen featuring Molly Murphy

This book, In A Gilded Cage, is the eighth entry into the Molly Murphy series.

Set in the early 1900's, Molly owns her own private detective agency, of which she is the sole employee. This in itself is rare for that time period, as most women were raised to marry well and have a lot of children, and encouraged to stay at home to raise them.

Molly is very independent, curious and maddening to her police detective fiance, Daniel Sullivan. She puts herself in harm's way more than once in order to solve her cases. He can't resist her, though, as she makes friends easily and has a heart of gold.

I just adore Molly, and count myself blessed by the women that have gone before us, as Molly and her friends do not even have the right to vote yet. An education is considered frivolous, and a woman alone is considered suspicious.

This series is one that just keeps getting better and better, and is a quick, delightful read. Get ready for some surprising twists, and some good news for Molly. I can't wait for the next one!

Mystery Amidst Influenza and Suffrage

Molly has just recovered from a strain of the influenza epidemic that is sweeping New York City in the spring of 1903. But she doesn't let that stop her from joining Sid, Gus, and some of their Vassar friends in marching for women's suffrage. While that effort ends with them in jail, it also provides Molly with two new clients.

First is Emily, a young woman left to fend for herself after her miserly uncle kicked her out. Emily wants to know more about her dead parents. Then Fanny hires Molly to prove her husband is cheating on her. Things are progressing on both cases when someone dies. Was it a bad case of the flu or was it murder?

As always, this book was a great trip back in time. The set up is steeped in history. When the cases start, the book picks up. I actually found both of them quite interesting and puzzling.

Molly has really grown as a detective, and that is evident here as she actually pulls off solving both cases. Her growing ability is actually quite fun to watch. And she continues to be an interesting character I love to spend time around.

The cases her also provide Molly a good chance to think about her future as the potential wife of Captain Daniel Sullivan. As always, I was both hot and cold to him, but I seem to soften with every book.

Another fine Rys Bowen read

I started reading this Rys Bowen, Molly Murphy series from books at the library....really enjoyed it.

The character is feisty yet caring and devoted to her clients and friends. A lovely story...all of them are.

It is rather important to start reading the series at the very beginning to understand how her current life evolved.

The Most Suspenseful Victoria Holt Novel!

Favel has lived her whole life on an isolated island with her artist father. She falls in love with a man from Cornwall, marries him, and goes to Cornwall with him. Once there, at his estate of Pendorric, she learns of the previous wives of the owners: they have died mysteriously at a young age. She fears, with good reason, she is the next.
This one is different from the other Holt novels for two reasons. The first is that it takes place I modern times, and second, it mentions locations from other Holt novels. This one is probably the most thrilling and suspenseful of all of Victoria Holt's!

Similar to Rebecca? Sure, but you can't beat the climax!

I have been a fan of Victoria Holt on and off for years, starting when I was about 13 and continuing to this day (I am 25). They are very easy reading, so if you are expecting Faulkner, you might want to look elsewhere. But if you are in the mood for a good suspenseful book with romantic tendencies, Victora Holt is the perfect author.
Bride of Pendorric is a great example of Holt's work. A young, orphaned heroine marries into a family with a mysterious past, and she soon comes to believe that someone is trying to get rid of her. The similarities to "Rebecca" by Daphne du Maurier are very striking, right down to Mrs. Danvers at the window convincing the heroine to jump vs. Nurse Grey at the window convincing Favel that she is about to be pushed. (I should note that I am not sure which novel came first). However, the eventual explanation is great, and a real shocker, even if you think you know who did it!
If you are in the mood for a great gothic novel, then "Bride of Pendorric" is a good place to start.

Strikingly Similar to...........

the novel Rebecca, by Daphne Du Maurier. A young, relatively inexperienced English girl (displaced and orphaned in both situations) falls for a "gentleman" a man of the gentry with a reknowned home that exceeds his own image (Max de Winter of Manderly and Roc Pendorric of Pendorric). In both books, the naive young heroine falls under the shadow of a previous bride (the first Mrs. de Winter and Barbarina Pendorric). Both are ghost stories in their own rights and both involve exceptionally dedicated servants (though more so in one book than the other). Indeed, both are psychological dramas, where the young heroine fancies herself haunted and in danger. Both books also end in the same fashion, with a fire.
Despite the similarities, The Bride of Pendorric does have some little twists (none of which should be mentioned since they enhance the story).
Therefore, if you have had the honor of reading Daphne du Maurier's Rebecca, you may well indeed enjoy Victoria Holt's The Bride of Pendorric.

Hannie, her retarded half-sister, finds a stuffed unicorn and is sure that it can grant wishes; Mags, too, almost comes to believe in the toy's power. There is no magic, but the events the unicorn's discovery precipitates lead Mags to a new realization of the depth of her love for her family. Hesse is sensitive to the youngster's mixed feelings of duty, caring, and frustration. Her plot moves satisfactorily, and she is successful in depicting the family's everyday environment; her description of the dinner Mags fixes for her brother and sister speaks volumes. A warm blend love, trust and everyday magic

This is a wonderfully told story that deals with the love of family and hope through the eyes of a young girl and her siblings who are living in poverty with their mother. The three children are dealing with difficult problems-the younger brother has been accused of stealing, the younger sister is dealing with a learning disability of some kind, and the older sister desperately wants to fit in with more well-to-do and snobby girls at school. Pulling away from her family in her attempts to fit in the other girls, Mags is led to rediscover magic and possibilities. Over time and in response to a crisis I won't give away, Mags also learns to accept her sister's vision of magical hope and her brother's understanding of trust.

A story with characters you will think about

Every day after school Mags has to take care of her little sister, Hannie, who has special needs, and her brother, Mooch, who everyone is saying is a thief. Her mom has to get ready to go to work at her second job in the factory and someone needs to make dinner, do the dishes, clean up the trailer, and get the little ones to bed. Sometimes Mags just wishes it didn't have to be her. When does she get to be a kid? When does someone take care of her? Life isn’t easy when everyone at school thinks you're trash, and the school bully is trying to cause problems for you. When Mags and Hannie stumble upon an old, dirty discarded unicorn in the field coming home from school, Hannie must have it. Mags tries to explain to her that there's nowhere to put it in their trailer. But, Hannie believes the unicorn is magic, and she won't leave it behind. Finally, they take it home, deciding to hide it in a garbage bag. Mooch makes the first wish on the unicorn. Next, Mags wishes on the unicorn because she really needs some new clothes. Hannie doesn't wish because she isn’t sure what she wants to wish for. Mags thinks the wishes are silly, but then there are clothes waiting for her when she gets home. Secondhand clothes appear from her aunt, and they make Mags feel pretty good. The next day more magic seems to be happening. Is it the unicorn? Things seem to be getting better, but when faced with a big decision will Mags make the right choice? Will Hannie ever use her wish? Can wishes really come true if wished on a stuffed unicorn? You will have to decide for yourself.

I really enjoyed Wish on a Unicorn by Karen Hesse. My heart went out to Mags, and I wish I could meet her and be friends with her because it's clear she needs a friend. I felt bad for her that she wants to be friends with some girls in class who may not be so nice. Sometimes we want things because we're looking at them through a distorted lens. Mags feels bad about herself and her home life, and I think this makes the popular girls seem more glamorous. My heart also went out to Mags because she has a lot of responsibility for someone her age. Kids are mean to her sister and brother, but her family is simply trying to just get along day by day. I think kids in fifth grade and up would enjoy this book and would want to be friends with Mags too. It made me realize that we often spend so much time wishing about things we don't have- that we don't see what's right in front of us. When push comes to shove we want our family and those we love to be safe and happy. I have to tell you this book made me cry. I listened to it on audio, and I definitely recommend it to others. The narrator did a wonderful job, and I felt my heart being pulled towards the characters. I look forward to reading more books by this author.

Teenage Mags has a tough life; considered Trailer Trash by their
country neighbors, she is embarrassed: by not having a father, having to wear hand-me-downs, a sister who is developmentally slow and a kid brother who is branded a thief. Working two jobs Mama doesn't have time to be there for her children or sympathetic to a teen's social problems.

One day after school the sisters discover a dirty, stuffed unicorn leaning against a fence post in a field. Immediately Hannie claims the disreputable creature as her own--perhaps sensing that this throw-away animal needs her love and protection. Mags realizes that
the idea that a disheveled unicorn could actually grant Wishes has a childlike appeal. Realistic Mags knows that this is utterly impossible, but part of her secretly hopes that it Might be true. Oh, if each one of the maligned siblings could have one wish each...

It is left up to the reader to decide if the filthy toy possesses any real magic, but some of the kids' wishes come true quickly--or is it just coincidence? Mags comes of age as she wrestles with more responsibility than a girl her age should have to shoulder while trying desperately to be accepted by a popular pair of girls. She feels dragged down by peer accusations that little Mooch is stealing food, and by the cruel observations that Hannie--whom she dearly loves--will never be normal. Yet why is this special-needs child suddenly happier than she has been in a long while, even talking more? It is from flawed Hannie that Mags learns the source of real magic and the mostimportant things she should cherish about her outwordly limpoverished life. The real magic was waiting to be found closer than she ever dreamed.

Arguing with Everything

This book starts with the standards of rhetoric laid down by Aristotle over two milennia ago. It explains the kinds, purposes, and conventions of classical argument in a vernacular English that contemporary teachers will be able to expound upon, and students will be able to comprehend. In essence, it brings Aristotle up to date without losing the unity that makes him worth studying to this day.

Unfortunately, only a small number of the chapters contain any examples of how this works in actual usage. To be really useful, this book needs readings. There is a larger edition with actual examples of rhetoric in use, but I naively thought my students would be happier with a slimmer, less expensive volume. Shame on me. I found myself running around all hell to breakfast, trying to find articles and essays that would exemplify the rules and notions of rhetoric for my students, hoping what I found (often on the fly) would actually be useful.

I like the layout and arrangement of this book. As far as it's useful, it's also informative and enlightening. But the more expanded version ought to be more useful to freshman composition students. Next semester, I will have my students buy the more expensive "with readings" edition, which will make my life easier, and theirs too, since they won't have to keep track of all my hasty photocopies.

A Solid Resource for Persuasive Writing

This book is designed to be an undergraduate-level textbook in persuasive writing. I read the book to see if I wanted to use it as a textbook for one of my classes. I think it's a very good textbook.

Part One introduces the types of arguments and various forums, as well as introducing the importance of context in persuasive writing -- it really matters who you are speaking to.

Part two covers the specific kinds of arguments in depth - arguments from the heart (humor and emotion), and those based on character, values, and facts.

Part Three is the meatiest portion of the book, addressing the structure of arguments, such as Toulmin analysis, arguments of definition, evaluation, cause, proposals, and humor.

Part Four deals with the style used in perfecting one's argument in written language, visual presentation, and spoken performances.

Part Five is shorter and discusses issues related to evidence, fallacious arguments (such as ad hominem attacks or slippery slope arguments), and intellectual property issues.

I like the clear writing style of the book and the informative explanation. The best part of the book, however, is the excerpts and examples. They are modern, relevant, engaging, and the students will enjoy reading and analyzing them. The chapter on Fallacies of Argument was also very strong, as well as the issues related to evidence.

Some things I did not like were the review questions at the end, some of which seemed ambiguous and overly time-consuming. Also, though the title is catchy, I do not accept that EVERYTHING is an argument -- the "Buckle-up" sign on the highway is just a sign.

That being said, I think EAA can be used as an effective textbook if certain sections are used instead of the entire book. Also, more in-depth analysis of Toulmin arguments might be examined in other sources, as it is treated somewhat lightly here. Overall, however, it can be a strong resource to help teach persuasive writing.

An encyclopedia hiding inside a textbook

This college textbook is in its fourth edition - doubling in size from 300 to 600 pages. The extensive index makes it useful as an auxiliary resource or even a stand alone.
The work is an encyclopedia on the subject of rhetoric. It is the first work on the subject that I have seen that includes `signifying' - a humorous style of African-American argument. In addition it includes the bones of a research handbook and the basics of Strunk & White. Unfortunately, it fails the Strunk & White goal of brevity. Making up for this in a great way is the section on citing almost every kind of resource in the MLA style. Even today there are MLA handbooks that omit instructions on how to cite articles that skip pages, how to quote from indirect pages or many other media other than print. The format is intensely visual which speaks well to the image rich environment in which we live. Visuals are key to instructing but shorten the life span of the work. In ten years, will a photo of Lil' Kim create the same learning opportunity as it does today? The book has a companion website which provides check lists for writing and research that are also covered in the book. The website checklists are much easier to use. Typically colleges do not include textbooks in their collections, but I would argue that this is one to break the rules for because of its high usefulness as a stand alone resource.
