The American Promise is more teachable and memorable than any other U.S. survey text. The balanced narrative braids together political and social history so that students can discern overarching trends as well as individual stories. The voices of hundreds of Americans — from Presidents to pipefitters, and sharecroppers to suffragettes — animate the past and make concepts memorable.

The past comes alive for students through dynamic special features and a stunning and distinctive visual program. Over 775 contemporaneous illustrations — more than any competing text — draw students into the text, and more than 180 full-color maps increase students’ geographic literacy. A rich array of special features complements the narrative, offering more points of departure for assignments and discussion. Longstanding favorites include Documenting the American Promise, Historical Questions, The Promise of Technology, and Beyond America’s Borders, representing a key part of our effort to increase attention paid to the global context of American history.

Needed for a class, found it put together very well
By Intelligent Knitter
As far as textbooks go, it was the formatting that make it what it is. Lots of pictures & primary sources compliment the information being covered in the text. Makes it not as boring a read as most history books. You actually find yourself reading all the little extras.

What makes this series truly great? The fact that they give you a choice on book format to purchase. In a college this textbook would be for a US history 1 & 2. You can chose to purchase the expensive and heavy Hardback if you know you are going to take both parts. Or you can buy a softback of Vol 1 or Vol 2, depending on which class you are enrolled in.

As an adult student, who only recently returned after over 10 year gap I had no reason to want to buy the big textbook. Already had US History 1 credits from the last time around. Through Amazon.com I was able to find the correct edition of the book, while the college bookstore refused to carry it!

Thankful that Amazon.com exists. :)

From Publishers Weekly
Near the start of bestseller Beaton's splendid 20th Agatha Raisin mystery (after 2008's A Spoonful of Poison), the lovelorn middle-aged detective reluctantly attends the wedding of her ex-husband, James Lacey, in the market town of Hewes. But before James can tie the knot with the lovely, much younger Felicity Bross-Tilkington, the bride is shot to death. Felicity's mother hires Agatha and her young detecting associate, Toni Gilmour, to find the monster responsible, despite the disapproval of Felicity's real estate whiz father, George. As other corpses connected to George begin turning up, his visiting friend, the debonair Sylvan Dubois, flirts shamelessly with Agatha. Sylvan's deadly charm puts Agatha in harm's way after she figures out the Frenchman and George are involved in illegal activities. Some Beaton fans may wish her heroine will find lasting romance and happiness, but a closing twist or two suggests Agatha is unlikely to settle down with one man anytime soon. (Oct.)

“This is the latest perfectly precious prose problem from Beaton, Britain's successor to Dame Agatha Christie. If you've never read an Agatha Raisin novel, it's time to start, and you'll have fifteen more of these confections awaiting you. Polish those off, and you still have a batch of Hamish Macbeth tales. All of them are cunningly plotted, beautifully written and more fun you can imagine. The Perfect Paragon is as perfect as all the others, and you won't figure out whodunit until the final pages.” ―The Globe & Mail on THE PERFECT PARAGON

“Entertaining…welcome back to Carsely, the charming Cotswolds village that's home to the sixteenth Agatha Raisin mystery.” ―Publishers Weekly on THE PERFECT PARAGON

“Fabulous…M.C. Beaton is at her best with this fine tale filled with twists.” ―Midwest Book Review on THE PERFECT PARAGON

“It's been 40 years since Dame Agatha Christie's death, and in that time, reviewers have often bestowed her mantle on new authors. M. C. Beaton is one of those so honored, and she deserves it. When it comes to artfully constructed puzzle plots and charming settings, Beaton serves it up…This is a classic British cozy plot, and a setting done with panache. Maybe M. C. Beaton really is the new ‘Queen of Crime.'” ―The Globe & Mail on THE DEADLY DANCE

“It is always fun to read an Agatha Raisin mystery, but the latest installment freshens up a delightful series by converting the heroine from amateur sleuth to professional without changing her caustic wit. Agatha remains crude and rude even to clients, but also retains that vulnerability that endears her to readers.” ―Midwest Book Review on THE DEADLY DANCE

“A very satisfying change for the smart woman of mystery with a new cast of colorfully realized characters blending with a few old favorites.” ―Mystery Lovers Bookshop News on THE DEADLY DANCE

“The story was first-rate and moved along with many twists and turns that kept me always guessing…I read this book in one sitting, which I think speaks for itself.” ―I Love a Mystery on THE DEADLY DANCE

“Fans of Agatha Raisin will be absolutely delighted at this latest addition to the series. Ms. Beaton has surpassed herself in The Deadly Dance.” ―Reviewing the Evidence on THE DEADLY DANCE

Not up to par
By BeeTee
I am such a fan of the Agatha Raisin series but was a bit disappointed with this latest offering. It felt rather disjointed to me in several places. It lacked the flow the novels usually have that let me "enter" the world of Agatha. It felt more like a series of happenings, rather than something plot driven with flow. The end of the novel(the last few chapters) especially felt this way. Don't get me wrong- I love the series and will pre-order the next book when it is released. However, this book just didn't cut it for me. I don't want to say more for fear of giving away spoilers for those who have not read.

There Goes the Bride
By Patricia Ibbotson
This is the 20th in the Agatha Raisin series and I've read them all. In fact, I wait every year for the latest book. Agatha started off as an amateur sleuth and now owns her own detective agency. She is battling aging, a bad hip, and is starting to feel frail. Even worse she is beginning to think she is losing her ability as a detective. She is also a romantic who is waiting for the right man to come along. Her ex-husband, James, who divorced her because he wanted to become a monk, is now engaged to a a beautiful, young woman and has invited Agatha to the wedding. When the bride is murdered minutes before the wedding, Agatha becomes the prime suspect. These books are an updated version of the British cozy and are very entertaining.

Ready for editing
By tmvjr
My impression is that the publishers rushed to publish an outline of a story and not an edited final draft. Almost every paragraph either had separation stars or a few blank lines between them, signifying that the author's outline was used rather than a final draft. The dialog is in outline form, the plot is not smooth, the transitions between paragraphs are not present, and there are even bullet-points still present that she obviously intended to edit at some future time. I don't know if the author has gotten too old to really craft a fine novel anymore, but nothing can kill a series faster than a shoddy version like this that will disappoint die-hard fans. (See Lilian Jackson Braun's last "The Cat Who..." book for a similar ignominious finale). Age itself does not seem the issue -- indeed, P. D. James latest was again brilliant-- but for fans of M.C. Beaton, this novel was so dramatically weaker than all previous entries, there is a serious question as to whether the author herself was actually involved in the publication decision. But publishers need to remember that if we are burned by one purchase, we will not be very likely to run out and purchase any subsequent books in ANY of her series. Personally, I'm going to wait for a library copy of the next book, just to be sure.

NY Easy is my Medium
By Amazon Customer
I bought this book for my mom who was having a hard time finding "medium" difficulty crossword puzzle books. All the easy books are too easy and the hard too hard. Some of those combination books that went from easy to hard seem to skip the medium difficulty. So I thought I'd give the NY Times Easy books a try. I figured maybe that would be what we considered to be medium. Sure enough! She loves it! She, my sister, and I absolutely love this book. We bought other volumes and found them to be just the right amount of difficult as well. If you consider the NY Times puzzles way over your head but find the grocery store books too easy, this one will suit you perfectly.

Fans of Evanovich have a new series to revel in, although a few characters are familiar. Lizzy Tucker has a way with cupcakes, and she’s inherited a great-aunt’s 1740 saltbox house in Salem, Massachusetts, plying her trade at Dazzle’s Bakery in town. Who should turn up in her living room but Diesel (Visions of Sugar Plums, 2002), who is extremely handsome, very strong, and not entirely human (if not entirely angelic). Diesel is locked into a cosmic battle with his cousin Wulf, specter-thin with more than an air of sulfur about him. Lizzy, who may or may not have a secret, special ability, is needed by Wulf and Diesel to recognize objects of magical power. What follows is a romp that careens wildly between impossibly silly and impossibly adorable (and includes the reemergence of Carl the monkey from Evanovich’s Plum Spooky, 2009). Lizzy gamely attempts to make sense of oddly magical occurrences (in possession of one of the magic charms, she can’t stop eating; in possession of another, she wants household goods and babies now), while simultaneously dealing with some fairly specific threats involving Wulf and resisting Diesel’s obvious affection and attraction. Classic Evanovich tropes like the replacement of trashed vehicles and the dumb-but-charming sidekick who refuses to learn from her mistakes are in evidence, as well as a gentle snarkiness about role-playing, angels and demons, and otherworldly almost-boyfriends. --GraceAnne A. From the Back Cover

Lizzy Tucker has inherited a historic house in Marblehead, Massachusetts, taken a new job as pastry chef for Dazzle's Bakery in Salem, and set her sights on a comfortable future. The comfortable future and any hope for normalcy evaporates when dark haired, dark hearted Gerewulf Grimoire and his nemesis, a blond beach bum named Diesel, enter Dazzle's and change Lizzy's life forever.

Grimoire has set his sights on the Stones of SALIGIA, rumored to have found their way to Salem. These seven stones, each representing one of the seven deadly sins, can bestow frightening powers upon its owner. Powers that would be dangerous in Grimoire's hands…

Diesel is a man with a mission: To stop Grimoire at all costs. In order to do so he'll need to convince the baker she alone has the ability to keep Grimoire from the stones. Once Lizzy and Diesel become a team, Diesel will have to guard Lizzy's body...day and night.

The Seven Deadly Sins pretty much cover everything that's wicked. Diesel thinks they also pretty much cover everything that's fun. And Lizzy thinks Diesel and The Sins cover everything her mother warned her about…

Utterly Awful
By MaryE
Wicked Appetite is just awful, a truly terrible book. The plot could have been something interesting, or the beginning of something interesting, but it is buried under a mountain of recycled characters and redundant silliness. Somewhere along the line in writing the Plum books, Evanovich lost the story + character + humor combination that was so appealing. Story was dropped or reused, characters stagnated and humor was overtaken by silliness and stupidity. Unfortunately, Wicked Appetite hasn't much story, the characters are just rehashed from the Plum books and there isn't real humor, just more silliness and even more stupidity.

Really, how many times did the monkey give the finger? Do we need more fart jokes? Come on. She's continuing her own trend, a really depressing and frustrating trend, of writing bad books.

What happened to Janet Evanovich? Was she overtaken by pod people? Did she run out of ideas? Is she failing because she's so afraid to fail? Are her publishers asking her for the same thing, over and over, not realizing that many of her fans are fed up?

Did she think we wouldn't recognize the characters from previous books? Changing names, hair color and occupation doesn't mean we haven't seen them before. And Lizzy and Diesel? Their relationship has also been seen before. Read the first couple of Plum books, when Stephanie and Joe were in the light touches and innuendo stage - it's all so familiar.

This was yet another hardcover book - they aren't cheap. And yet this book wasn't worth it, not in content and not in heft. The book is short, the pages contain way too much white space, so much so that it is very noticeable. It resembles a high school term paper written by a kid desperate to stretch the length to what was assigned.

None of us can afford to throw money away and spending hardcover money on this book was just that. Evanovich's new releases are hardcovers because of the success she had with the Plum books, but Wicked Appetite starts a new series and as yet this series just hasn't earned the right to that much of my money.

If you are a fan of Evanovich and curious about the new series, check it out of the library, buy it used or wait for the paperback, at least. Please don't throw your money away on the hardcover.

The Forumla Is Wearing Thin....
By Avid Reader
Janet seems to be running out of gas. Perhaps she is like the rock star who after achieving great success loses the fire and spark to continue creating anew. Yet while she can perhaps rely on her backlist for a continuing stream of royalties, she can't exactly go out on tour and rake in the big bucks.

Hence she continues to churn out new product, imposing on her loyal readers and diluting her legacy.

Her Plum books are becoming way to formulaic and the stories way to thin. It's getting to be like a comedy show where they use the same jokes, albeit with slightly altered words. I guess what I really mean is that there is not enough development of the characters going on. They don't evolve, their lives never change - it seems like they are caught in the Bill Murray movie Groundhog Day.

Then there are the other projects where she exploits the characters that have become beloved and puts them into even thinner products. You get the feeling with her books that while she may not be finished filling out and developing a story, she is done with the book.

Between the numbers books are only an excuse to write short stories that she can't flesh out into real "number" quality stories so that she can financially exploit the franchise.

Wicked Appetite falls right in place in this evolution of Janet from an exciting writer into a "franchise" that, like a machine that churns out on product. This is neither fish nor fowl in that it's not a between the numbers book but it borrows familiar characters from past work. It's lazy to do that, of course and the book suffers from it. I get the feeling that Abbott and Costello are putting on a show with Laurel & Hardy popping in as extra guest stars.

The story is thin like her other books have become. It's silly and not very smart humor. Janet used to make you laugh with goofy silliness that almost seems smart. Now it seems strained and too familiar.

She needs to get hungry again and remember what made her want to write in the first place.

And she should stop ripping people off with pointless books - write the ones that matter and you'll make just as much money. You don't have to stick to a schedule. And you should STOP participating in the Great E-Book ripoff. You have the right to tell your publisher that electronic versions of your books shouldn't be sold for a couple of bucks less than a hard copy. Of all people, a franchise writer like you has clout. So stop with the ripoffs.

WAY BEYOND SILLY---
By SJ
I thoroughly enjoyed the earlier Stephanie Plum books but found some of the later ones just okay, if not a bit silly...Well, this new series blows "silly" out of the water. Beyond ridiculous is more like it. A shame really as Diesel's search for the Seven Deadly Sins ancient relics could have been fun. I found the heroine, Lizzie, quite boring and the narrator used an irritating voice for her. I couldn't place the accent and her speech sounded like an older person with loose dentures that kept slipping and making a slight whistle on the S sound. Luckily, her accent came and went.

The featured sin was gluttony, but its relation to food was very much overdone to the point of grimacing---(and don't get me started on the woman who could only say "gobble, gobble.") The mystery was scant, the unimpressive "bad guy" hardly made an appearance, and the romance was non existing. They'll have to look for the future sins without me.

From Publishers Weekly
Set largely in the southern Italian city of Bari, this stylish psychological thriller from Carofiglio (A Walk in the Dark) fuses Jack Kerouac's On the Road with hard-edged crime fiction à la Henning Mankell's Inspector Wallander saga. When model law student Giorgio Cipriani meets charismatic philosophy student Francesco Carducci, he becomes enthralled by Francesco's dangerous lifestyle. Within weeks, Giorgio has abandoned his studies for high stakes poker games in which he and his newfound mentor cheat players out of large sums of money. Giorgio soon finds his life filled with late-night poker scams, drinking, drugs, and sexual encounters with random women. When Francesco manipulates him to take a "holiday" in Spain, Giorgio realizes just how completely he's forsaken his past. Meanwhile, Lieutenant Chiti of the Bari police tries to identify an elusive criminal who's been assaulting local women. The intertwining plot lines build to a haunting ending.

From Booklist
Changing direction from his legal-thriller series starring Guido Guerrieri (Reasonable Doubts, 2007), Carofiglio offers a noirish thriller about a naive pre-law student who becomes involved with a cardsharp and watches his life spin out of control (think The Talented Mr. Ripley). Giorgio is looking for a little excitement when he befriends the charismatic Francesco at a poker game. Soon Francesco is training Giorgio in the art of bilking suckers, and the pair becomes a formidable team. But poker games are the least of Francesco’s interests. He lectures Giorgio in his version of Nietzschean philosophy, introduces him to women, and eventually enlists his help in smuggling cocaine from Spain to Italy. Giorgio knows he’s in too deep but is powerless to extricate himself—until the formidable Lieutenant Chiti, with shades of Dostoyevsky’s Porfiry Petrovich, enters the picture, on the trail of a serial rapist. Carofiglio establishes the mood early—we feel Francesco setting the hook in Giorgio and slowly, excruciatingly reeling him in—and then he heightens the tension by jumping back and forth in time, revealing a little but not enough to allow us to relax. As Francesco plays Giorgio, so Carofiglio plays the reader. --Bill Ott

This is a tense psychological suspense
By A Customer
In the Apulia boot region of Italy, a serial rapist rocks the city of Bari. No woman feels safe as the police led by Lieutenant Chiti struggle to apprehend the culprit. Making no progress disturbs Chiti who cannot eat or sleep properly.

Hard studying diligent law student Giorgio Cipriani meets gust for life philosophy student Francesco Carducci. They become friends; albeit a seemingly odd couple. However, rather quickly Giorgio ignores his studies joining his new buddy in cheating other players out of large sums of money playing poker. They also share drugs and alcohol, and have one night stands that are often violent with a myriad of women. The duo leaves Bari for Spain; while Chiti continues to lose sleep over the serial rapes.

This is a tense psychological suspense that focuses on three people. Chiti feels like a failure unable to prevent the serial rapist from finding victims; Giorgio wonders how he fell so far from grace as he gave up and betrayed all his friends for the hedonistic zest for life that charismatic Francesco displays. However, Francesco is the fascinating one as a sort of Peter Pan with a destructive vent. The Past Is A Foreign Country is a taut tale that grips the audience from the moment the two students meet and go on their frenzy.

Francesco Is a Dangerous Friend In Gianrico Carofiglio's Psychological Crime Drama, "The Past Is A Foreign Country"
By J. B. Hoyos
During the late eighties, Giorgio Cipriani is a twenty-two-year-old law student in Bari, Italy. He develops an unlikely friendship with the ne'er-do-well Francesco Carducci who is a philosophy major. The suave, handsome Francesco quickly seduces Giorgio into a glamorous, sensual life of crime. Together, they play poker and swindle their opponents out of small fortunes. Eventually, Giorgio forsakes law school and his obsession with Francesco causes him to descend into the depraved depths of cocaine trafficking and sexual perversion. Meanwhile, Lieutenant Chiti, the head of a task force, is trying to identify a serial rapist who is terrorizing Bari.

With friends like Francesco, who needs enemies? Someone should've taught Giorgio to be more careful in choosing his friends. Indeed, friendship, specifically how far we will go to protect our friends, seems to be a prevalent theme throughout Gianrico Carofiglio's beautifully written psychological crime drama, "The Past is a Foreign Country." Most of the novel is told in the first person from Giorgio's point of view. As a child, he loved to write; currently, he is writing about events taking place many years in the past. Once he read a novel titled "The Foreign Student;" on the page before its prologue was the following quotation: "The past is a foreign country: they do things differently there." Giorgio's life was much different during that turbulent year when he was friends with Francesco.

Francesco Carducci is a human chameleon with a high IQ. He can blend into any type of environment; he is able to easily make friends with people from all walks of life. With his incredibly handsome looks, he can seduce practically any woman. Happiness, however, eludes him. Having been raised poor in a broken home, he feels that he never has enough money. Giorgio is probably the first true friend he has ever trusted, which is evidenced by his willingness to teach him his card tricks. Soon Giorgio is nearly as good a card shark as Francesco.

Giorgio Cipriani knows how to fight and is a brave man. Though not wealthy, he was raised in an upper middle class family. Giorgio respects the laws; the moral values instilled in him prevents him from becoming another Francesco. The reader might consider Giorgio and Francesco as opposites. I believe that Giorgio, yearning for a break from his highly structured, regimented life, envied and craved Francesco's glamorously risqué lifestyle. I was sometimes left wondering if Francesco was lonely for true friendship or merely manipulating Giorgio, using him as a pawn for his future plans of crime.

Some of the novel is told from the viewpoint of Lieutenant Giorgio Chiti of the Carabinieri (an Italian military corps with police duties). He had a tragic childhood that is similar to that of Francesco. However, Lieutenant Chiti learned to overcome the nightmares of his past. A great leader like Francesco, he commands a task force to identify and locate the phantom rapist. He is also a talented artist. From a description provided by a victim`s friend, he is able to sketch a portrait of a suspect. Both Giorgio Cipriani and Lieutenant Giorgio Chiti are involved with law, having followed in the footsteps of their respective fathers.

Bari, Southern Italy, with its beautiful beaches, cafes and villas, provides a wonderful setting for "The Past is a Foreign Country." Located at the heel of the boot-shaped country, this port city is rich with history. Besides having a flourishing fishing industry, its agricultural industry includes cherries, tomatoes, artichokes, grapes and table wine. "The Past is a Foreign Country" was originally written in Italian by Gianrico Carofiglio, a former anti-Mafia prosecutor based in Bari. Having sold over 400,000 copies worldwide, it has been translated into numerous languages. Howard Cutis has done a superb job of translating this psychological crime drama into English. I would never have known that it was a translation. I was confused only once when the point of view changed from Giorgio Cipriani to Giorgio Chiti and I had forgotten that the lieutenant had the same first name as the law student.

"The Past is a Foreign Country" proves that your friends and associates can get you into serious trouble. Bad choices that seem innocent at first can cause a chain reaction of events that can quickly become deadly. You can never return to the past and amend the damage that has been done. "The Past is a Foreign Country" is highly recommended reading for those who love good crime drama with exotic locales. Other novels that involve twisted friendships that lead to disastrous consequences are David J. Schow's "Internecine," Neil Cross' "Burial," Wallace Stroby's "Gone `Til November" and Daniel Judson's "The Violet Hour."

Social Lives, by Wendy Walker

Step into picture-perfect Wilshire, home to some of the most privileged people in the world, where one woman's desperate act could bring the precariously balanced social order crashing down…

Wilshire, Connecticut, the gilded enclave of Manhattan's prosperous elite, appears to be a vision of suburban tranquility: the mansions are tastefully designed, the lawns are expertly manicured, and the streets are as hushed as the complexities in the residents' lives. Rosalyn Barlow, the most envied woman in Wilshire, is waging a battle of social manipulation to silence the scandalous gossip that threatens her daughter's reputation while her self-made billionaire husband grows more and more distant in his young retirement. But for fourteen year-old Caitlin Barlow, navigating life as a teenager in a culture of wealth and sexual promiscuity has become far more perilous than either of her parents knows. Newcomer Sarah Livingston has nothing but disdain for everyone and everything around her and a growing terror at having another child in a world she's come to resent. As she is pulled into the Barlow family's storm, the walls begin to close in around her marriage and the life she once thought she wanted. And for Jacqueline Halstead, who's just discovered her husband is under investigation for fraud surrounding his hedge fund, saving her family from total ruin means doing the unthinkable - and shaking the Barlow family, Wilshire's insular community, and herself to the core.

From Publishers Weekly
Walker halfheartedly investigates the unhappy lives of women in a rich Connecticut suburb in her disappointing second outing (after Four Wives). Jacks Halstead is the materially comfortable wife of a hedge fund manager whose secretiveness and locked briefcase make her suspect that all is not well. But Jacks is a survivor, and soon she's seducing the very rich husband of Rosalyn Barlow, the community's social empress and, ostensibly, Jacks's friend. For her part, Rosalyn is an icy master manipulator, who needs to perform damage control after their 14-year-old daughter is caught performing fellatio on a boy at school. A pawn in Rosalyn's scheme is Sara, a guileless young newcomer bent on leaving the middle class behind. Throughout, the prose is pedestrian (warm smiles, crisp fall air) when it isn't ridiculous (his tongue lay inside her mouth like a giant anchovy) A banal ink-and-paper soap opera, this achieves neither the pluck of chick lit nor the glitziness of a Jackie Collins. Review

"Wendy Walker's provocative insight into the minds and hearts of her characters’ discontent is alternately tender and shocking. Proving that money can never fill the empty places of the soul, Social Lives explores the suburban world of material excess with heartbreaking accuracy."

--Patti Callahan Henry, New York Times bestselling author of Driftwood Summer and The Art of Keeping Secrets

“In Social Lives, Wendy Walker vividly reveals how the world of money and privilege affects the women who inhabit it, bringing to light the family dynamics it corrupts, the glittering cages it creates, and most poignantly, the lengths some will go to keep it in their grasps. A pitch-perfect novel for our times.”

--Liz Lange, Founder of Liz Lange Maternity

"This gripping tale of domestic intrigue and social aspirations in the super-wealthy suburbs of Connecticut will scandalize and enthrall you."

--Elise Chidley, author of Your Roots Are Showing

Provocative, fast and fun
By EC
The book lifts the veil of perfection and happiness from "rich and respectable" families. The writing is clear and the pace quick as Walker describes the motives behind the endless quest for power and prestige once substantial money has been established. Social Lives is an in depth look at the deals women and men strike to allow their privileged and complicated lives possible. Walker writes in an unflinching style as she reveals her characters' attempts to transcend self-destructive behavior after too many of their justifications lead to the loss of what they truly cherish and value.

The book's pace does not sacrifice intimate exploration of the characters: Husbands and wives try to discern true love in their mature marriages; teenagers turn their first sexual encounters into status symbols while ignorant of the consequences. Walker's plot progresses to when these characters discover that their choices are less than what they believed they had negotiated or won.

By the end of the novel I was hooked and wanted to know more about the future of the characters. How would Caitlin react if she ever discovered her mystery friend? Could David survive a trial? Can Jacks ever forgive herself? Will any of these people ever let go of their past? In sum, Social Lives is a fascinating window into the coveted lives of the affluent, which are filled with as much hope and angst, humor and disillusion as any family.

kindle library loan. meh.

soap opera. cookie cutter cardboard characters. probably attracts the same audience as the Real Wives tv shows. uninspired. hard to feel any empathy or sympathy for such a pile of soulless and status seeking robotic prostitutes. stuck in bed recovering so couldnt throw kindle against the wall. finished it, because just like banging my head against the headboard while screaming...it felt so good when i stopped. thank god hubby got home to turn on wifi. now i can get new books. anything has got to be better. one star because at least there were few typos. most crap like this is self published w/o proofreaders. so congrats on that.

Paris, November 1891: The body of a barefoot young woman dressed in red is discovered on Boulevard Montmartre. She has been strangled and her face horribly disfigured. That same day a single red shoe is delivered to Victor Legris’s Parisian bookshop by a goatherd. Suspecting more than just coincidence, the charming bookseller sleuth and his assistant Jojo are soon searching for the identity of both victim and murderer. Then, a body is discovered in a wine barrel at the same time as a famous performer from the legendary Moulin Rouge is strangled in her apartment. Victor’s investigation takes him and Jojo into the dark alleyways and bustling cafes of the hills of Montmartre, on a trail of evidence that seems to point to a case that shocked the population of Lyons years ago.

From Booklist
The sights, sounds, and culture of 1890s Paris are brought to life in this densely written mystery, the third in the series. Bookseller Victor Legris becomes involved in solving another crime when a woman’s red shoe is dropped off at his shop. He learns that a young woman has been found dead, barefoot, her face disfigured by acid. Legris believes that there is a connection between the shoe and the barefoot victim, and as he investigates, additional murders occur—a man found dead in a barrel of wine and a famous performer strangled in her home. Along with his assistant, Joseph Pignot, Legris connects the killings with a scam perpetrated in Lyon years ago. Is one of the victims out for revenge? Meanwhile, Legris, unsure of the loyalty of his lover, the beautiful artist Tasha, struggles with jealousy. Populated with both fictional characters and real people of the time, the novel makes the most of fin-de-siécle Parisian nightlife as a setting for crime. --Sue OBrien

Review

Red Shoes and the Moulin Rouge
By Jeannie Mancini
Kick up your heels with the bawdy cancan dancing girls of the Moulin Rouge and enjoy more murder and mischief as they ruffle their petticoats high in the air. The third installment of the Victor Legris murder series by authors Claude Izner is another winner of the highest caliber. Multiple murders this time involve a highly developed plot to keep the reader turning the pages. All the same lovable characters of our detective Victor Legris, his partner and stepfather Kenji, Jojo the shopkeeper, his irritating mother, and Victor's Russian girlfriend Tasha, reappear in their natural roles. And for an added bonus we get a guest appearance from the famous painter Henri Toulouse-Lautrec!

This is a delightful series of nothing but pure fun and entertainment. You will adore the cast of characters and cheer them on as they scour the Parisian streets and countryside for clues to unravel this puzzling crime that begins with a ladie's very fancy missing red shoe. This shoe just happens to be mysteriously delivered to Victor's bookshop with their address tucked inside. The blend of murder mystery, historical fiction, humor, and even romance, is surely the secret of this series' success. As the reader devours each book in the series slowly, you get a firsthand feel of the time and the place the authors evoke with their in-depth knowledge of Victorian Paris that they specialize in. Learning about the many famous Impressionist painters and French literary authors of the time through both background characters or from the rare books in Victor's Bookstore, gives the reader an intimate portrait of life in Paris during the late 1800's. Bravo to the authors for the third time, I am waiting impatiently for book four!

exhilarating French historical mystery
By A Customer
In 1891 Paris at an outing of the C. Bontemps Boarding School, Elisa borrows Iris' red shoes to run away with twenty-one years old Gaston. Some time later on Montmartre, a female body is found; her face burned with acid so it is unrecognizable; the corpse is barefoot. A red shoe is delivered to the the Bookshop owned by Victor Legris and Kenji Mori.

When Kenji recognizes the shoe as one he gave to his goddaughter Iris, he assumes logically and mournfully she is the dead victim until he learns from her she lent them to her friend. Victor follows Kenji to the school and once he catches up with what the shoe denotes he insures Iris is safe as she may have been the intended target. Gaston's body is found in a wine cask on the wharf. Having solved two cases (see The Disappearance at Père-Lachaise and Murder on the Eiffel Tower), Victor fancies himself a detective so he is determined to solve the case before his rival police Inspector Lecacheur can. When Elisa's mother is also murdered, the three killings appear linked to a cold case in Lyon, but why and who is the avenger remains unknown.

This is an exhilarating French historical mystery that gives armchair detectives a taste of late nineteenth century Paris when cabarets and wine houses were the rage. Real historical figures add to the atmosphere while anchoring the time and place of the storyline. Secrets from the past prove either deadly or joyful as Victor investigates the serial murders linked to a cold case.
