Nineteenth-century African American businessman, activist, and educator Booker Taliaferro Washington's Up from Slavery is one of the greatest American autobiographies ever written. Its mantras of black economic empowerment, land ownership, and self-help inspired generations of black leaders, including Marcus Garvey, Elijah Muhammad, Malcolm X, and Louis Farrakhan. In rags-to-riches fashion, Washington recounts his ascendance from early life as a mulatto slave in Virginia to a 34-year term as president of the influential, agriculturally based Tuskegee Institute in Alabama. From that position, Washington reigned as the most important leader of his people, with slogans like "cast down your buckets," which emphasized vocational merit rather than the academic and political excellence championed by his contemporary rival W.E.B. Du Bois. Though many considered him too accommodating to segregationists, Washington, as he said in his historic "Atlanta Compromise" speech of 1895, believed that "political agitation alone would not save [the Negro]," and that "property, industry, skill, intelligence, and character" would prove necessary to black Americans' success. The potency of his philosophies are alive today in the nationalist and conservative camps that compose the complex quilt of black American society.

One of the best autobiographical stories. A clear account of the horrors of slavery, and the struggle to survive after freedom with no means of support. Mr. Washington is one of my personal heroes.

*Starred Review* Anyone who has stood helplessly by as physicians insisted that a battery of tests and interventions could prolong the life of a loved one, only to see those expensive efforts fail, is certain to be moved by Kiernan's presentation. While his assertion that the American way of dying has changed only during the last 30 years may be debatable, there is no question that the process of dying has undergone a radical makeover. It has become, too often, a parade of last-ditch, state-of-the-art medical interventions, to the direct detriment of the dying person and his or her family and friends. Those who have a terminal illness, Kiernan says, deserve to die quietly, in their own homes, surrounded by loved ones and as pain-free as possible. He makes it sound simple enough, and a lot cheaper than the currently popular, if futile, pricey hospital heroics that prolong little more than misery. The problem is that American medical schools devote more time to teaching students about diseases not even found in the U.S. than to preparing them to work with terminal patients. Doctors, therefore, are ill equipped in every way to accompany a patient down the path to a serene death. A nice polemic, even without practical advice on assuring one's own peaceful demise. About What We All Know Is Going to Happen

When asked, the overwhelming percentage of people thinking about their own deaths say that they want to die at home, either alone or with family around and without pain.

About 1200 people a day make it this way. The other 5300 who die on an average day die in a hospital, surrounded by machines and strangers, and often in pain because the doctors are afraid to give to many drugs to patients where the government might come down on them.

My own father reached a point where he was given six months to a year to live. Or he could have an operation. He had the operation. Only afterward were we told that now he had perhaps one to five years. He lived a year and a half, and was in pain every day. The medical profession did not do him a favor.

For me this book can be summed up by four sentences on the last page, they reflect my exact hopes for myself when the time comes:

'Dozens of people taught me that same lesson during my research. They did not fear death, but they feared dying badly. They did not want to live forever, but they wanted to live well for as long as possible. They did not want to die one moment too soon, but they did not want to suffer one moment too long.'

VERY HELPFUL

This book was just what was needed to reassure our family that our decision for Hospice care was the right course for our elderly parent's end of life. It contained so many good suggestions that we were able to act upon. It helped us all cope with our loss, both before and after the actual death.

I recommend this book HIGHLY if you are facing a similar situation. The constant focus is on Quality of life and comfort during one's last days, just what my father wanted! Very reassuring!

most people of mature years are loathe to think of what their final weeks or months are likely to be like. This book puts many of these issues in perspective, and I would put it in the category of "required reading" for everyone over fifty. The author has rich experience of dealing with people who either were reasonably well prepared for their last days, or were not prepared at all. This book can help put you in the right category...

Sort of like AbFab but with less comedy

Social climbing and the lengths people will go to in order to make a better life for themselves can be fascinating. In The Gatecrasher we have one such anti-heroine, but thankfully, she is surrounded by some of the most interesting and likable characters I have met as of late.
Fleur Daxeny crashes funerals in order to meet rich, vulnerable men, and take as much as she can get from them before moving on. She's been doing this successfully for a while and has her routine down pat. When we meet her, she is in the process of getting ready for the new batch of funerals coming her way, charging her stylish new black outfits to her unsuspecting, soon-to-be-deserted, Greek lover.
Her target at Emily Valour's memorial service is, of course, Emily's bereaved husband Richard, a rich man who mourns the wife he's lost but at the same time realizes the he's never really known her. What Richard has never had is a passionate soul mate, a woman who can make each day come alive and instill in him the desire to truly live. Fleur is determined to be all that and more.
Little by little we see Fleur stealthily become an integral part of Richard's life. Damn his club and his gossipy acquaintances, Richard thinks. For the first time in his life he desires and is desired, although guilty thoughts of Emily do pop up whenever he's tempted to make love to Fleur, who knows that Richard must succumb physically in order to be completely hers.
Richard's children are, of course, dysfunctional. Young Antony lives in shame of the birthmark that made him imperfect to his mother and his social life is painfully awkward and nonexistent. Daughter Philippa is married to the odious and greedy Lambert, the man Emily said would be the only one to marry an such an undesirable package as she. Needless to say, Fleur soon realizes that Emily was far from a kind person, be it in the capacity of wife, mother, or sister, and is soon charming Richard, his children, and Emily's own sister, the initially reticent Gillian.
It is never part of Fleur's plan to linger so long at Richard's, but first the lack of sex, and then the fact that he hasn't yet given her a Gold Card (Fleur's preferred method of getting her hands on her target's money) serve to stall matters. Finally, Fleur's daughter Zara arrives, creating all sorts of complications with Antony as a triumphant Fleur, Gold Card finally in hand, gets ready to leave and move on to her next victim.
Richard is the most likable of men - a little clueless when it comes to his children, but he definitely means well. His feelings where Fleur is concerned are pure and tender, and I couldn't help but feel for him as Fleur became increasingly bored with him.
Much like Zara does when she finds herself up against her mother's machinations, I found myself losing patience with Fleur, and honestly wished that she'd gotten more of what she really deserved. The ending only works if one believes that the selfish, vain, greedy Fleur of 99% of the book has really changed.
The secondary characters, however, were priceless. Philippa's pathetic marriage to Lambert is truly sad and real, just as Antony's desire to belong is heartbreaking. Gillian, who at first so hated Fleur, made me smile as she succumbs to Fleur's charm and wears the blue scarf Fleur gives her - every single day.
This book will probably not be for everyone. Fleur is cold, ruthless, and calculating as she begins to ensnare Richard, who never has a clue about the captivating woman he's met. But if you're in the mood for a sort of Absolutely Fabulous storyline with a bit less comedy, then I recommend you try The Gatecrasher.

Stick with Kinsella. Skip Wickham.

This book, like Wickham's other books, is so disappointing. I continue to buy them thinking that I'll eventually get a bit of her "Kinsella" persona in the writing. But, no. It's as though she ruthlessly buries any hint of the fun, hilarious, endearing characters she concocts as Kinsella in order to try out darker, more serious heroines. They just don't work. I read a lot of British chick lit, and there are loads of better books and authors out there who can write "edgy" (as the book jacket says) characters whom the reader will actually want to read about. I just didn't enjoy Fleur. There was nothing redeeming about her. It's difficult to stick with a story when you don't like the individual who's eyes you must see through in the book. As other reviewers have stated, the story itself drags on and on for pages with nothing interesting happening. My hope is that Wickham only tries out this kind of writing every few years because I love the way she writes as Kinsella. Here's hoping she puts out more and more "Kinsella" books and less "Wickham" books in the future.

Stylish and smart, if a wee bit predictable

"The Gatecrasher" is an upper-class, refined, oh-so-British version of the con artist who falls in love with her prey. Fleur Daxeny (you have to love that name) attends the memorial services of wealthy wives so she can insinuate her way into the affections of their vulnerable widowers; as soon as she has a Gold Card in hand - conveniently billed to the widower, of course - she is outta there. But her latest target, Richard Favour, gives Fleur something of a crisis of confidence: he's so darn nice, and thoughtful, and sweet, and genuine, that she isn't sure she'll be able to go through with the scam after all. This isn't a new plot device (and so, to some extent, the story feels like it's been done before), but Madeleine Wickham works it with all she's got. It's great fun to peer into the lives of the wealthy, especially when they live in mansions in the English countryside and drink beverages like "buck's fizz" and wear couture hats. Fleur manages to be charming and likeable despite her ulterior motives. And because Wickham does a good job with characterization and plot, one can easily overlook the more predictable elements of the book. The result is a stylish and well-written story reminiscent of Brit writers like Joanna Trollope.

The simple language allows for easy reading, and the full-page pencil illustrations break up the text nicely. Codie is a caring youngster eager to please, even when experiencing some doubts about the arrival of her first cousin. A fresh, gentle approach to a standard theme.

Codie has a special relationship with her aunt Alix, who lives up the block; though Alix's first child is due in two weeks, she welcomes the little girl for her usual Saturday night sleepover and assures her that, despite the big belly where Codie can see the baby move, ``There will always be room'' for her. Secretly, Codie is making the baby a patchwork quilt--a perfect gift for a seamstress like her aunt. When Alix is rushed to the hospital the night of the sleepover, she's concerned: she knows that ``Aunt Alix has tried having a baby lots of times. This is the closest she's come to a baby fully done.'' The quilt is two weeks short of completion, and so, perhaps, is the baby. Working through the night, Codie finishes her gift with a border of lavender, Aunt Alix's favorite color; morning brings news that the baby's fine, and that ``Lavender'' is her name. This simple, easily read little story is a gem. Each telling detail--Alix's dogs comfortably settled on a lumpy sofa, licking cookie crumbs from each other's whiskers; Codie's joyous powdered sugar fight with her aunt and uncle the night before the baby is born, echoed in Alix's tone (``sweet and light, like powdered sugar'') when she finds the patchwork neatly tucked among the baby's clothes-- is a gentle brush-stroke in this tender, but never sentimental, portrait of a particularly nice family welcoming its newest member. THIS INSPIRED STORY IS GREAT FOR CHILDREN OF THE AGES 8 AND YOUNGER. THE STORY OF LAVENDER IS ONE OF A SMALL GIRL WHOSE AUNT (MY REAL-LIFE AUNT) IS PREGNANT (WITH MY REAL-LIFE COUSIN). THE GIRL IS HAPPY FOR HER AUNT BUT IS AFRAID THAT WHEN THE BABY COMES THERE WILL BE NO TIME LEFT FOR HER AND HER AUNT TO BE TOGETHER. THIS STORY IS ONE TO BE SHARED WITH ANY SMALL CHILD WHOSE MOM IS PREGNANT AND SEEMS UNSURE OF WHAT A NEW BABY WILL MEAN FOR THEM. IT IS HEARTWARMIMG AND ALLOWS THE READER TO GO INSIDE THE CHARACTER'S MIND TO HER PRIVATE THOUGHTS.

Inspiring, but definitely not a tasting guide!

As I make my way through Red, White and Brew I'm struck by how many fascinating stories there are to be told by those who make the beer we all love to drink. The strength of this book is in the history and perspectives of those personalities that Yaeger interviews along his journey through my neighbouring country to the south. (Yes, I am a Canadian who loves a good American microbrew.)

It's important to realize you won't learn much from this book about which beer you should be bringing home from the corner store; you will, however, uncover a ton of history about the brewery that made that beer, the people behind it, the business ups and downs, the process, and the blood sweat and tears that go into every bottle... uh, figuratively that is.

But the main takeaway for me was a new appreciation for how democratic beer can be. The Anheuser-Busch and MillerCoors of the world might prefer you to believe that beer must come from large breweries, but the people in Red White and Brew all started down their various paths with a very different idea in mind. Beer is what you make of it, and for someone with a passion, putting *good* beer in the fridge is something you can always do for yourself. It just takes one trip down to the local homebrew store, and you're on your way.

As I've already warned my girlfriend, the day may arrive where I come home with a few bags of malt and hops, and start putting into practice the ideas I now have percolating in my mind thanks to Red, White and Brew.

a mouth-watering book

One part road book, one part portrait of a unique breed of entrepreneur, "Red White and Brew" introduces us to independent brewers all over America, different in personalities and temperaments but all sharing the same steely independence and dedication to doing what they love. The best endorsement I can offer is that after finishing this book, I returned to beer drinking after a long hiatus (now if you'll excuse me, I have to go to the bathroom).

About the Author
Will Shortz has been the crossword puzzle editor of The New York Times since 1993. Mr. Shortz founded both the American Crossword Puzzle Tournament, where he serves as director, and the World Puzzle Championship, where he is the captain of the U.S. team. He is the current Puzzlemaster for "Weekend Edition Sunday" on National Public Radio.

Weekend in the Country crosswords

Not as enjoyable as other NY Times crossword puzzles. Several puzzles were misprinted and solutions did not match. The difficult puzzles were much too difficult and inappropriate for "Weekend in the Country" activity.

Enjoying the Crossword Puzzle

This is my review of "Weekend in the Country Crossword Puzzles."

When I retired three years ago after 45 years of working, I got serious with solving crossword puzzles. From my local newspaper I solve five easy puzzles every week, along with three large, complex puzzles. I save extras of the complex ones to work on again in three or four months.

But it's never enough puzzles! So, I buy puzzle books now. Not just ANY puzzle books, either! Will Shortz has provided us with many wonderful crossword puzzles in The New York Times as well as in books that we can buy and take on trips with us. So it is with me! I have two of his special crossword books and the latest one is "Weekend in the Country Crossword Puzzles" published by The New York Times. There are 200 puzzles in this book. It is filled with a variety of puzzles according to their difficulty in solving. The categories are keyed with stars. The "Monday" puzzles are the easiest with one star. "Tuesday" puzzles are keyed with two stars--Wednesday, 3 stars, Thursday, 4 stars, Friday, 5 stars, and finally on Saturday, 6 stars. And yes, the 6-star puzzles are really hard to solve.

I highly recommend this crossword puzzle book to all serious and not-so-serious crossword puzzlers out there.
