Three Hot Reads from 3 Great Authors
By Mickey
Loved these quick 3 stories.

Lora Leigh- Sheila's Passion was a quick passionate and exotic read. If you've read Lora's stuff before you won't be disappointed. I bet if she wrote erotic stories about rocks you would have to get a fan to cool yourself off. Lora has a way of writing and descriptions that clearly leave their mark on you as you read the story. This story is about Sheila and how she has found the man she loves although because her father is a high ranking military official she has been burned before being in a relationship with a man who only needed her to get to where her father could promote him, so she is leery to believe that anyone would want her solely. Nick and Sheila burn up the sheets through the entire story but the mad man out there watching thinks Nick is someone else in hiding and uses Sheila to try and shake him out of hiding, although he's got the wrong man. Great story hope theres more to come from this one.

Cheyenne McCray -Deadly Dance is another quick read that covers the details of Keri a woman who was injured and terrified by an old boyfriend who she helps put in jail, and Detective Adam Boyd who's partner who was killed by the same man. The detective finds out that Carter has gotten out of jail on a technicality after only 7 years in prison and stops a hit from going down on Keri. The story is sweet and you can feel the emotions between Keri and Adam, and the suspense is good as well. Always love Cheyenne McCray's stories and you will probably like this one too.

Red Garnier - Caught is the first story I've read of Red's, and was impressed with the angst and sensuality of the story between Meg and Cody. Meg has loved Cody since she was a kid and Cody and his twin brother Ivan both wanted Meg. Ivan however is the darker of the twin brothers and tells Cody if he takes something he loves then he will take something that Cody loves and that ends up being his parents who Ivan kills when they are 16 years old. Through the years Cody grows up to be a homicide detective and puts his brother in jail as a juvenile but he breaks out pretending to be Cody and goes after Meg. Cody tells himself he can't have Meg because he has a killer's blood running through his veins but he finally lets down his guard to take Meg to bed 7 years later as well as taking the virginity she saved for him alone. I won't spoil the ending but they all lived HEA.

Legally Hot, more like Legally NOT
By Laura D. Mercedes
I am a huge fan of the three authors so I was super excited to pick this up, what a disappointment. No attempt was made at cohesive stories or ingratiating characters. The absolute worst unfortunately came from my personal favorite, Lora Leigh. Sheila is so annoyingly juvenile and wishy washy it is impossible to understand why Casey would love her. The other 2 stories were just completely forgettable, not either authors best work.

Legally lukewarm is more like it
By Kathy Davie
Three short stories which involve men in uniform, sort of.

Series: Sheila's Passion (Wounded Warriors, 0.75)

The Stories
Lora Leigh's Sheila's Passion is interesting, but Leigh needs to come up with a better premise for the driving purpose behind this. Her bad guy is chasing down someone he sees as betraying the family "trust", an Italian mob family's responsibilities to those under them. Gio "betrayed" all who relied upon him by loving his daughter and protecting that love. Now, the son whom Gio taught about love has escaped the Family. Disguised himself. So the bad guy is hunting for Beauregard and hurting, torturing, killing anyone close to any man he suspects might be Beau. It's his excuse. I ain't buyin' it.

So, this particular storyline has the bad guy focused on Shelia Rutledge and Nick Casey. Shelia's father Captain Douglas Rutledge is in charge of an intelligence post. One of the groups which gather intel is headquartered in/at Ethan Cooper's bar where Nick works as a bouncer where Sheila picks up the intel and how she met Nick. Both Nick and Sheila have their particular aversion to getting romantically involved so there's the usual give-and-take until a crisis forces them to acknowledge it. The romance in this is good, typical Lora Leigh; it's the underlying premise that really drags this down.

Cheyenne McCray's Deadly Dance is cute with the very protective Detective Adam Boyd, NYPD, falling in love with a witness who is threatened by the release from jail of her attacker. Keri Holliday was on the verge of a breakthrough in her ballet career when her boyfriend Edward Carter "objected" to her dumping him. Well, the twit did make the mistake of threatening to take her evidence about him to the police... It's a nice, sweet story but no great drama.

Red Garnier's Caught is a clash between twin brothers, one of whom is a sociopath who kills their parents. The other goes on to a career in law enforcement determined to make up for his twin as well as what he sees as his own failures. It's years later that Cody Nordstrom encounters Megan again. The same Megan over whom he and Ivan clashed. The same Megan he doesn't feel worthy of. The same woman who loves Cody and, this time, won't take no for an answer. This is the best of the three IMO even though I'm getting really tired of the "poor me" routine.

The Cover
The cover is yellow, blue, and hot pink: the authors, the background, and the title, respectively. A man in trousers is facing away with his left hand behind his back clasping a set of handcuffs.

The title...hmmm...yes, it's about men in uniform and I'd say it was more lukewarm than hot.

Sanctuary: A Novel (Jack Taylor Series), by Ken Bruen

When a letter containing a list of victims arrives in the post, P.I. Jack Taylor tells himself that it’s got nothing to do with him. He has enough to do just staying sane. His close friend Ridge is recovering from surgery, and alcohol’s siren song is calling to him ever more insistently.

A guard and then a judge die in mysterious circumstances. But it is not until a child is added to the list that Taylor determines to find the identity of the killer, and stop them at any cost. What he doesn’t know is that his relationship with the killer is far closer than he thinks. And it’s about to become deeply personal.

Spiked with dark humor, and fueled with rage at man’s inhumanity to man, this is crime writing at its darkest and most original.

Not his best, but anything Bruen writes set a high bar
By Jeff
I really enjoyed Sanctuary. Like most of the Jack Taylor series, it flies by. The prose is sparse, well constructed, and frequently ironic or sarcastic in the extreme. Bruen's very fond of delivering trenchant observations about what is happening to his beloved Galway. He gets off some of his very best observations of the series in Sanctuary.

Another reader has commented that he did not do anything quite so new here in this book as he has in a few others. I'd agree, but he also interjects an element into the series's storyline that is pretty important for future books in the series.

Bruen's quite the fan of the "...nasty, brutish, and short" school of thought on human life. However, the central motif of the whole series is his nearly inchoate rage at how badly humans can treat other humans (and themselves.) Bruen's humanity is in fine shape and this is quite a worthwhile addition to the Jack Taylor canon.

Brilliant!!
By L. J. Roberts
First Sentence: Dear Mr. Taylor, Please forgive the formality.

Jack Taylor has sold his apartment and is ready to head to the US when his friend, Ridge, announces she has malignant breast cancer, so he stays to help her. He then receives the letter stating two guards, one nun, one judge and a child will die and he is to be witness.

His once friend, now enemy, Guarda Superintendent Clancy, doesn't give it any credence, but Jack does follows up, with the help of now-recovered Ridge and other friends.

I begin each new Bruen book afraid the quality won't be has high as the last. I had nothing to fear.

Bruen is not for everyone: Jack is a character you don't necessarily like, but about whom you do care. The story is hard-edged, violent and emotional. The alternating voices of conversational first person and chilling third person is extremely effective.

Bruen's descriptions of the city, observations on the changes prosperity have wrought on Galway, as well as dark humor and sensitivity make him a remarkable writer. The story and writing are spare, brutal, physically and emotionally harsh, tragic and brilliant.

Bruen's Prose is Beautifully Spare, Instantly Familiar and Utterly Unforgettable
By Bookreporter
With each new book --- and he is clipping along with at least two a year at this point --- Ken Bruen doesn't so much redefine the crime novel landscape, or alter it, so much as make it his own.

I present as Exhibit "A" SANCTUARY, Bruen's seventh Jack Taylor novel. Taylor is an ex-Irish guard turned de facto Galway private investigator. He is not a rumpled knight with a taste for rock and rye; he is a full-blown alcoholic who falls on and off the wagon just a little less often than you or I might partake of a change of clothes. Either way, the transition is not pretty, but Bruen never lets Taylor's eyes blink once as he drags us, sometimes kicking and screaming, through the wreckage of what occurs. There is a passage in which Taylor describes what will kick a recovering drunk off of a successful rehab, one that so perfectly paints the picture of the razor wire that all addicts walk that it brought tears to my eyes. Bruen gives us descriptions of similar quality at a frequency of about one per page in this story of pursuit, deception, regret and, ultimately, redemption.

SANCTUARY begins with Taylor's receipt of a cryptic letter signed by "Benedictus." It presents a shopping list of murder --- two guards, a nun, a priest and a child --- informing Taylor that only he will truly comprehend. The murders begin, apparently unrelated, with only Taylor aware of their common significance. He already has much on his plate, given the illness of his former Garda partner and a revelation that sends him, as well as faithful readers of this series, reeling in horror.

Nonetheless, Taylor attempts to determine who the mysterious Benedictus is, working backward from the identities of the murder victims to find some common thread other than their occupations as listed, even as his warnings to the local guards fall on deaf ears. Given Taylor's less-than-stellar reputation, he really cannot expect much more. Taylor accordingly must rely on his own powers of deduction, both diminished and fueled by alcohol abuse. But when Benedictus's choice of a final victim strikes dangerously close to home for Taylor, he must risk all on one last guess and pray that he is right, even as he realizes that he is well-nigh damned either way.

A recurrent, unifying theme of the Taylor novels is the manner in which the backspray of an alcoholic's past misdeeds and omissions continues to haunt and resonate years, even decades, later. This is especially true in SANCTUARY, where the shade of an act of Taylor's performed years before under the cloak of inebriation comes back to haunt him. As always, Bruen's prose is beautifully spare, instantly familiar and utterly unforgettable, infused with enough memorable turns of phrase to fill three books. And --- as if one needs more --- he weaves music and literature throughout the narrative, providing a recommended list of noir and other fiction, and several CD titles for musical accompaniment, that will hold you until his next offering.

Finally, let us not forget the Leonard Cohen joke near the beginning of SANCTUARY that will leave the knowing bent over double in laughter, however inappropriately.

Rosa, by Nikki Giovanni

Fifty years after her refusal to give up her seat on a Montgomery, Alabama, city bus, Mrs. Rosa Parks is still one of the most important figures in the American civil rights movement. This tribute to Mrs. Parks is a celebration of her courageous action and the events that followed.

Award-winning poet, writer, and activist Nikki Giovanni's evocative text combines with Bryan Collier's striking cut-paper images to retell the story of this historic event from a wholly unique and original perspective.

From School Library Journal
Grade 3-5–Rosa Parks's personal story moves quickly into a summary of the Civil Rights movement in this striking picture book. Parks is introduced in idealized terms. She cares for her ill mother and is married to one of the best barbers in the county. Sewing in an alterations department, Rosa Parks was the best seamstress. Her needle and thread flew through her hands like the gold spinning from Rumpelstiltskin's loom. Soon the story moves to her famous refusal to give up her seat on the bus, but readers lose sight of her as she waits to be arrested. Giovanni turns to explaining the response of the Women's Political Caucus, which led to the bus boycott in Montgomery. A few events of the movement are interjected–the Supreme Court decision in Brown v. Board of Education, the aftermath and reactions to the murder of Emmett Till, the role of Martin Luther King, Jr., as spokesperson. Collier's watercolor and collage scenes are deeply hued and luminous, incorporating abstract and surreal elements along with the realistic figures. Set on colored pages, these illustrations include an effective double foldout page with the crowd of successful walkers facing a courthouse representing the 1956 Supreme Court verdict against segregation on the buses. Many readers will wonder how it all went for Parks after her arrest, and there are no added notes. Purposeful in its telling, this is a handsome and thought-provoking introduction to these watershed acts of civil disobedience.–Margaret Bush, Simmons College, Boston

From Booklist
*Starred Review* Gr. 3-5. Far from the cliche of Rosa Parks as the tired little seamstress, this beautiful picture-book biography shows her as a strong woman, happy at home and at work, and politically aware ("not tired from work, but tired of . . . eating at separate lunch counters and learning at separate schools"). Her refusal to give up her seat on a bus inspires her friend Jo Ann Robinson, president of the Women's Political Council, and the 25 council members to make posters calling for the bus boycott, and they organize a mass meeting where the Reverend Martin Luther King Jr. speaks for them. Paired very effectively with Giovanni's passionate, direct words, Collier's large watercolor-and-collage illustrations depict Parks as an inspiring force that radiates golden light, and also as part of a dynamic activist community. In the unforgettable close-up that was used for the cover, Parks sits quietly waiting for the police as a white bus driver demands that she give up her seat. In contrast, the final picture opens out to four pages showing women, men, and children marching for equal rights at the bus boycott and in the years of struggle yet to come. The history comes clear in the astonishing combination of the personal and the political. Hazel Rochman

"The only tired I was, was tired of giving in".
By E. R. Bird
When I was a child in elementary school and Black History Month came along, the children in my class were taught small songs about various African-American heroes. There was the Harriet Tubman song, the Benjamin Banneker song, and the Rosa Parks song. The Rosa Parks song began in this way, "Rosa Parks was tired and sat / In the front of the bus not back / They tried to make her change her seat / Because she was black". Of course, there are two things wrong with this song already. First of all, she sat in the middle of the bus. Not the back of it. Second of all she wasn't tired. Ms. Parks was an activist, but to make her seem like an everywoman her membership in the NAACP was downplayed so that she would be more sympathetic. The plan worked beautifully and Ms. Parks was raised to the status of folk-hero, as was right. UN-fortunately, there are countless children's books out there that choose to ignore her activism. They are under the distinct impression that if children also think that Ms. Parks was tired or unwittingly told to move that it's so much easier a story to tell. "Rosa" is one such book.

No one is going to hold this book in their hands and say that it isn't one of the loveliest creations ever to hit the children's book market. Bryan Collier, by all accounts one of the nicest guys on the globe, has never received the respect and attention he so richly deserves. My hope is that someday he illustrates a book worthy of a Caldecott Award rather than a Caldecott Honor. Unfortunately this was not the book. It is through no fault of his own, of course. Mr. Collier has taken his trademark watercolor and collage technique and given it a purposeful yellow hue. He has done this, he says in his Illustrator's Note, because "I wanted the reader to feel in that heat a foreshadowing, an uneasy quiet before the storm". Along the way he spots the pictures with intelligent details as well. A man riding the bus holds up an article prefaced by just the words, "Emmett Till". When Rosa refuses to move you suddenly get an image from her perspective. A white man glares at her with obvious hatred while some black women frown at Rosa for putting them in (what they see as) potential danger. And that image of just her hands clutching the strap of her purse? Heck, I wouldn't mind framing that and putting it on a wall. That's art in the purest sense of the word. So no argument on how wonderful the images are in this book. It's the words you have to contest.

I had high hopes for Rosa. I hoped that the book talked about Ms. Parks in the NAACP, didn't perpetuate the myth that she was "tired", and was well-written. Says Rosa Parks in her autobiography, "Rosa Parks: My Story", "People always say that I didn't give up my seat because I was tired, but that isn't true. I was not tired physically, or no more tired than I usually was at the end of a working day. I was not old, although some people have an image of me as being old then. I was forty-two. No, the only tired I was, was tired of giving in". In fact, further reading of her book shows that Ms. Parks was an active member of the NAACP. She was an activist and at the time of her arrest the NAACP had been hoping to have a case in which they could file suit against the city of Montgomery over bus segregation. A woman had been arrested earlier that summer but had paid her fine without objection. "Hers certainly wasn't a good case for Mr. Nixon to appeal to a higher court. I knew they needed a plaintiff who was beyond reproach". And though she did not step-by-step plan her own arrest, she understood its greater implications.

Ms. Giovanni does not mention that Rosa Parks was more than just an everyday seamstress going home at the end of a workday. At one point she sees a man who "came frequently to the NAACP Youth Council affairs", but the book makes no mention that she herself was a member. To her credit, the author does make an after-the-fact statement of how Rosa wasn't physically tired. So there is that. But there are factual inaccuracies in this book that do not match Ms. Parks' own book. According to "Rosa", Jo Ann Robinson learned of the arrest when, "A sister member of the Women's Political Council approached her just as she reached the checkout lane". Ms. Robinson was indeed the president of this council but she was told of Ms. Park's arrest through Fred Gray, a black attorney. In "Rosa" the Women's Council is the only organization that comes up with the idea of the boycott. In reality much of the credit goes to the work of E.D. Nixon who mobilized support through the city's black ministers. "Rosa" mentions them later when the boycott has already been established and the NAACP, Women's Political Council, and churches decide on Martin Luther King Jr. as their spokesperson.

Okay, but then there's the writing itself. It's very odd, but for some reason the book makes a big big point out of how many of the women who contributed to the Civil Rights movement spent much of their time thinking about tending to their husbands. Right before the bus driver tells her to move the book says that Ms. Parks was, "daydreaming about her good day and planning her special meal for her husband". Two other times it says that she would surprise her husband with "meat loaf, his favorite" and that when she was paying her fare "she was smiling in anticipation of the nice dinner she would make". Now Ms. Giovanni, as it happens, knew Rosa Parks personally so we can assume that she got this information firsthand. It just struck me as a touch out of place. When Rosa got on that bus she recognized the bus driver as a particularly nasty fellow she'd dealt with in the past before. There was no daydreaming involved in her autobiography. Apparently such additions make for a better story though. When Jo Ann Robinson finds out about Rosa's arrest she "rushed home to put dinner on the table, cleaned up the kitchen, and put the kids to bed". Obviously these are all important things in their own way, but why were they included in this story? Is Ms. Giovanni trying to make a point that the women of the civil rights movement didn't abandon their families while they fought for justice? If so, why? It doesn't seem integral to the story. This is a book about Rosa Parks and the larger context of what she did.

And then there's the text. It's unfortunate but I kept getting annoyed at the book's writing style. At one point it says that "Rosa Parks was the best seamstress. The needle and thread flew through her hands like the gold spinning from Rumpelstiltskin's loom". Rumpelstiltskin's loom, eh? Rumpelstiltskin had a loom? I guess saying "spinning wheel" would have been redundant since she'd already said "spinning" and figured that few enough people know what looms are to complain. It's a petty complaint with the book, sure, but it rankles. In another case the book never mentions how Ms. Parks got out of jail. She goes to jail, sure. But you would think her release would be an important part of the story. For all that the kids reading this book know, Ms. Parks is still sitting inside that jail cell in Montgomery, Alabama.

After a second and third reading of the book I flipped to the back to see what books were included in "Rosa"'s bibliography. Obviously Ms. Giovanni wasn't working off of "Rosa Parks: My Story", so what books did she consult? From her friendship with Ms. Parks it must have been from one-on-one interviews since there isn't hide nor hair of a bibliography to be seen. You may say that it's a little silly of me to think there would be a bibliography in the back of a picture book, but I've read enough empowering and well-wrought picture book biographies that DID have bibliographies that I naturally assumed "Rosa" would too. No such luck.

So here's the dilemma. The book is about a true hero of the American people. Nobody but NOBODY contests that. The pictures in this book are drop-dead gorgeous too. Bryan Collier is a genius. Rosa Parks, however, deserved the best possible picture book biography. Instead she has a book about her that does not credit factual sources, includes details that do not fit, and holds back important information that children should learn. You want my advice? Read "Rosa Parks: My Story" (NOT the picture book one but the 192 page version), know the true facts of the case, then take "Rosa" and show the pictures to your kids while telling them the true tale. Criticizing anything that has to do with Rosa Parks is a dangerous activity. Ms. Giovanni's heart is in the right place. And, I will point out, this book garnered itself a coveted Caldecott, so what the heck do I know? For your consideration.

Beautiful illustrations, writing is poorly done
By Rachel D. Flachman
I bought this book because I wanted something substantive for the little girls in my life who dream of being princesses... (really, how many tiara's does a four-year old really need?) I read the first few pages and was smitten with the illustrations. They are beautiful. Well done Mr. Collier. Since beautiful illustrations go far in this age range, I would give this book three stars.

The Rosa Parks story stands alone as one of substance. But this book falls short of providing a readable story for children. It doesn't flow as good writing should for any age group, but rather jumps around and tries to provide so much data, that it fails to actually tell a story about the great lady it was written to commemorate.

If you have enough history about the story and can tell it yourself to your children, the book may be worth buying for the illustrations alone. For my money, I would rather find something that is also a good read for my kids.

"...She was tired. Not tired from work, but tired of putting white people first..."
By Tilly
I liked Ms. Giovanni's approach to telling this story. Given that it is a children's book, I appreciate that she looks at the humanity of Rosa Parks, (a woman with a life and a husband), rather than just her political role. I know that my kids will relate better to the story because of that.

Furthermore, Ms. Giovanni doesn't pretend that the events on the bus were an unforeseeable coincidence. I find the lead up to be both personal and portentous of things to come. It reads better as being opportunistic rather than engineered or manipulated and I don't think that she portrays Rosa as lacking intention. In fact, I imagine that Ms. Giovanni's source (as I have read) was her meeting with Rosa Parks herself. I expect that, in person, the truth of her story reaches a deeper personal level and Ms. Giovanni felt able to build on previously documented interpretations. Everyone has a voice and with the warm, expressive pictures, I find it an effective combination for children.

Nobody knows the Hamptons like Jodi Della Femina, who captures the inside world of love, society, and scandal in this delicious summer page-turner.

Toni Fratelli has a busy summer ahead.

After several setbacks in Manhattan force her to move home to East Hampton, her To Do list is full. She has to help her father run his popular Italian restaurant.  Start up her own catering company.  And plan, cater, and be the Maid of Honor at her best friend’s wedding on the beach.

Unfortunately for Toni, the groom’s mother is a competitive New York socialite who’ll stop at nothing to make sure her son doesn’t marry a local girl – especially on the family’s Southampton estate. The biggest caterer in the Hamptons is trying to run her fledgling business out of town.  And worse than anything, Toni seems to be losing her best friend to a circle of snooty bridesmaids.  Everything might be tolerable – if her dad could just stop treating her as if she was seventeen again.

At least Toni finds love.  When she meets a sexy surfer named Chris, it quickly turns into the most romantic summer fling of her life.  But there’s more to Chris than his vintage Mustang and used guitar … and he’s not sure Toni’s going to like the truth.  Before the end of the summer she’ll be forced to face her hopes – and fears – as trying to forgive becomes her biggest challenge yet.

Chapter 1

"Have you finished packing?"

"All done. Last night." Everything boxed, taped, stacked in a U-Haul, and ready to go. "But what if I have trouble sleeping out there? It’s so quiet. Maybe I’ll need a prescription or something."

"You haven’t had insomnia for a while."

"No, but I’m not going to be in my bed anymore. I mean, I will—but I won’t. It’s all going to be different. Or the same? I mean"—she takes a deep breath—"I’m going home."

A word that was supposed to evoke happy memories. Christmas. Reunions. Birthdays.

Home.

But today it just makes her feel desperate.

"Lots of people move back home, Toni."

She notices he said back home. Back in time. Back on the path of her life.

"But my father roams around all hours of the night. He makes a pot of espresso at midnight and then wonders why he can’t sleep. He’ll probably keep me up too."

"Let’s worry about that when it happens, okay?"

She sighs and goes back to staring at the framed poster on the far wall, an explosion of black and gray drips.

Dr. Weinberg picks up a chocolate-chip cookie from a plate on his desk. She brought him a dozen this morning wrapped in blue-checked tissue paper, stacked together and tied with white ribbons like a New Year’s Eve firecracker. He tells her again how delicious they are.

"Thanks," she says. "Salt. That’s the secret. You always add a dash of salt, but I use extra. It enhances the sweetness. Really opens up the flavors." She starts to expound on the virtues of adding just the right amount of salt to recipes, how many different kinds of salt there are—rock, sea, kosher, fleur de sel—and how her grandmother’s salt and pepper shaker collection inspired her love of vintage dishes. She’s so lost in her reverie that when the doctor’s watch makes a little ping at the end of the hour, it actually surprises her.

Outside on the sidewalk, she buttons up her jean jacket and catches a glimpse of her reflection in the glass door. Chocolate brown eyes, wide mouth, long dark hair looking like it could’ve used a blow-dry this morning.

Why didn’t she dress up? Put on some makeup, at least.

Because the cookies were more important, that’s why.

She sees people hurrying down the sidewalk, hugging themselves against the late April chill. She smiles to herself. New Yorkers are always so eager for the winter to be over, they toss their scarves and gloves at the first sign of spring—then freeze for a month.

She’s the same way.

She takes a spiral-ringed notebook out of her bag and flips to today’s To Do List. She strokes off Cookies for Dr. W. and heads toward the drugstore on the corner.

Inside the entrance, she stops and savors fluorescent lighting for the first time in her life. She looks at the long lines of people waiting at the counter. She is filled with nostalgia. She must be the only person in New York who’s actually going to miss the ubiquitous Duane Reade.

Someone bumps her from behind. "Sorry," she says.

But the man keeps walking, barely noticing her. He has dark trendy hair, an expensive pin-striped suit. "God, I hate my life," he’s saying into his Black-Berry. "I was up half the night singing Bee Gees songs. Remind me never to . . ." He seems lost, checking the signs above each aisle, before disappearing into First Aid.

Toni grabs a shopping basket and wanders through the store, picking up more things than she’d planned. Conditioner. Hand sanitizer. Sunblock. In Stationery she sees them, her favorite spiral-ringed notebooks for her To Do Lists. She grabs a handful and heads for the cashier.

On line, she’s the only person not tapping a foot or looking at a watch.

"God, my head . . ."

She turns to see the man in the pin-striped suit approach a woman standing on line behind her. The woman is in her late twenties, her black coat open to reveal a cashmere sweater. She holds a bottle of Advil and some sodas.

Toni turns forward again.

"What time did you get in?" the woman asks.

"Who knows? But if I have to go to one more karaoke bar with a bunch of guys who can’t—" The violent clatter of tablets. "What is wrong with this thing?"

"It’s childproof." The crack of the plastic seal.

"You don’t have anything stronger—like bullets?" he says. "What the hell’s taking so long? Is it National Trainee Day or something?"

Toni just rolls her eyes.

At the counter, a cashier walks up and unlocks another register, motioning to Toni. "May I help who’s next, please."

Toni goes to step forward, but the man butts in front of her, tossing his Advil on the counter. While he digs for his wallet, his cell phone rings. "Yeah? . . . No, no, he defaults on the debt if"—he seems frustrated, motioning for the woman in the black coat to pay— "if it’s more than six times the cash flow . . . Yeah, that’s what we . . ." He walks out of the store still on his phone. The woman in the black coat smiles and motions for Toni to go ahead.

Out on the street, Toni walks slowly toward the subway, taking in every sight she can. The Starbucks where she used to get green-tea lemonade before her sessions. The diner where she had breakfast with Kevin that time.

She bristles when she sees the man in the suit, pacing the sidewalk outside a black town car. He’s now yelling into his phone.

"That is total bullshit! Then he’s the only goddamn person in the history of"—his voice drops as he notices her; he has that dead look in his eyes Kevin sometimes got when he was on his phone—"in the history of Delaware corporate law to get out of a binding contract!"

Figures, she thinks. Her stroll down memory lane ruined by a self-important Master of the . . .

She stops in her tracks.

Her heart squeezes in her chest when she sees a little girl turn the corner with her mother. The girl has two balloons on different lengths of string, one red, one blue, as she skips along holding her mother’s hand. Toni watches the balloons as they pass. A song is suddenly going through her head.

"Row, row, row your boat . . ."

She feels a deep twist in her stomach.

"Gently down the . . ."

The next thing she is aware of is a swing of sky and tree branches, everything not where it’s supposed to be.

After that, she is drifting. Everything is dark. She tastes copper and salt, like potato chips in her mouth, and if she were a little older she would know that this taste is blood. But she is only three.

I honestly didn't think this book was anything great. It was recommended by my library's book club, that it was funny. Well it wasn't.

First, the characters were underdeveloped. The only one character that had any history or motivation was Toni. All we really know about Didi (the mother-in-law) is that she's really scared of getting old. The author stressed again and again about how Didi is scared of the sun or doing anything to make her old. Example p213 Did thinks of herself as "old cheddar." The repetition of Did's age as an issue is overdone. Then there is Chris - Toni's love interest. When the book starts, the author makes a small attempt to describe him and his friends. After those few pages, we really don't get ANY MORE input or ANY understanding into Chris (forget even his friends) until 2/3 of the book - p218. Seriously... all we know is Toni loves him and that Chris is keeping a secret. We also learn that Chris miraculously kisses Toni every time she had an doubts about him. But we don't understand Chris, what he thinks, what motivates him, or WHO he is, his background, etc. Chris, for all we know, could just be any male "boyfriend character" placeholder - Totally attached and devoted to Toni, but devoid of personality. Our picture of Layla - the other important female character- is just as bleak. All we know it's she's gorgeous, about to be married to a very rich family, and she likes to be on the beach getting tan while her friends do all the work.

What I did learn is that this book is NOT about summer love, NOT about best friends, not about Careers or success. Essentially this book is written as a thinly disguised Hamptons tour guide and Vogue designers reference in one. We don't NEED to know every LOCATION that Toni remembers or goes to. WE don't need to know the roads that all the rich people live on or how much traffic there is. We don't NEED to know the names of celebrities who live or have owns homes there. I really don't give a crap about how many people remember Toni as a kid. The author went TOO overboard with all this, it just overtook the entire story. It read less as a look into Toni's past (which was what the author fruitfully tried to achieve) and more like like the Guru Guide to Hamptons that she quoted too often.

I know I'm being harsh, but that's because I can speak from my own experience. I've been to the Hamptons and been stuck in traffic, went to farm stands, and local restaurants. it's really NOT that much of a big deal. No need for all that text.

Finally what bothered me about this book is all the constant brand name throwing and reference to Hamptons luxury. For example: p.207 Jimmy Choos, p215 "It's not that big" referring to a Hamptons house (a pool house mistaken for the mansion). iPhone, Tiffany's, Bagley Mishka, and tons of other luxury brands just busting out. I'm not materialistic, but I love reading Vogue and even have a subscription. Vogue is honest in its intent, in that it's a luxury magazine about luxury brands, and unlike the book, doesn't not pretend to be something it's not. It feels like like the author just stole all the ads and inserted the brands into every which spot in the book she could find - a brand guide pretending to be a novel - very dishonest. Really.... we KNOW they're rich without constantly throwing it out there.

My favorite part of the book is the ending. The bride finally gets the wedding she wanted, Toni gets the customers and the guy (who btw quits his rich job to help Toni was a restaurant - totally unbelievable), and Didi all of a sudden becomes nice to everyone. A miracle ending that everyone saw coming, yet still sweet. Why DID on EARTH did Didi all of a sudden bring herself down to the "ordinary people" level. Jail day alone wouldn't have done that. It just erks me how under developed Didi's character is. The author just flings an ending at us that we all know we''ll love.

There is NOT MOTION, or ACTION throughout this whole book. NOTHING HAPPENS. It's just a lot of names, places, and Toni rushing to get stuff done. A whole lot of NOTHING. If you took out all the shopping, dressing, tour guide text, and poor character development, you'd be left with a 20 page short story. NOT worth reading at all.

So there you have it folks. I've never tore a book apart in this manner before. Nor have I given a book 1 star before. But I guess there is a first time for everything.

That was fun....
By Too Square to Be Hip
Ok - that was fun! My wife bought a copy, and I read it first. My only thought was that I should have saved it for the beach. Great summer read... and I have to admit, I am a sucker for books like this. It was quick and lively - and the characters seemed true to the setting (not that I have spent a lot of time at the Hamptons). Escapist? Maybe... but it seems spot on and timely given all that is going on... I recommend it.

Hampton's Bound!
By N. Riley
No worries if your vacation budget doesn't allow for a trip out to the Hampton's this summer, because authors Jodi Della Femina and Sheri McInnis do it for you. This is a delightful summer read, with the lives of several different people, in the Hampton's for different reasons, intersecting.

Toni Fratelli, her friends, and her family are interesting characters and I devoured this book in a few short days. The authors do a great job showcasing the difference's between the locals who live there all year, and the wealthy people who summer there. They were even able to eventually make Didi, the future mother-in-law of Toni's best friend, Layla, sympathetic. In lesser hands, she would have turned into a caricature of a wealthy socialite of a "certain age" that you automatically hated.

The relationship between Toni and her best friend, Layla, was well drawn out as well. By going back in time every so often to tell a story about the two friends growing up, there was the basis for the believable friendship these two women shared.

This is a great story about love, friendship, and family that is a welcome addition to your travel suitcase as you pack up for the beach, pool, or just sitting in your backyard!

Noreen Riley is the author of A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To Her Brother's Shotgun Wedding.

As if simply being fourteen-years-old weren't bad enough―what with the usual teenage angst and uncertainty, Vicky Austin's always comforting and reliable home life is changing completely. Her brother John is going off to college in the fall. Maggy, an orphan taken in by the Austins two years ago, has gone to live with her legal guardian. And the rest of Vicky's family is moving from their quiet house in the country to the heart of New York City.
But before the big move, the entire Austin family is taking a meandering trip across the country in their station wagon, stopping to camp along the way, with no set schedule and not a single night of camping experience among them.
Wild animal attacks. Life-threatening natural disasters. Cute boys on the prowl. Anything can happen in the great outdoors.

More than typical teen-aged angst
By Nina M. Osier
Every adult-in-the-making goes through at least one "difficult year." For Vicky Austin, that year comes when she's 14. She hasn't been able to do anything right (or it seems that way to her, at least!) for months, and now her parents have decided to tear her previously secure world apart. Dr. Austin is taking a temporary research and teaching position in New York City, leaving his small-town medical practice in another doctor's hands. The Austin family's home in Thornhill, Connecticut will be occupied by that other doctor's family, and that's where their pets will remain, too. But before they move into a New York apartment, the Austins embark on a cross-country camping trip - from Atlantic (Grandfather Eaton's home on Seven Bay Island) to Pacific (Laguna Beach, California, where they visit Uncle Douglas and Aunt Elena) and back.
It's an eventful trip during which Vicky has her first taste of romance, as she meets and is followed all the way across the country by a troubled and sometimes frightening rich boy named Zachary Grey. Zach's angry, hopeless response to life (which he fears losing at any moment, thanks to a rheumatic fever damaged heart) forces Vicky to confront twin demons that are making her own life miserable, in what L'Engle sensitively yet unsentimentally presents as something more than typical teen-aged angst. Vicky is part of the first generation to grow up under the shadow of the atom bomb, becoming aware of world events and their significance at the Cold War and nuclear arms race's height (this book's copyright date is 1963). She's become old enough, during her "difficult year" of being 14, to realize that she and everyone she loves can die at any moment; and she's also become old enough to ask herself whether or not God is really there. The love and respect she has for her grandfather, a minister and former missionary, can't save her from wondering if Zachary and others like him may not be right.
Although I didn't find THE MOON BY NIGHT as enjoyable a read as other L'Engle books because it was a bit too introspective for me (I'm used to more action and dialog, and missed it sorely as I ploughed through page after page of interior monologue), it is nevertheless the one I would most recommend to today's young readers. I was just a little bit younger in 1963 than Vicky Austin, and I remember only too well how it felt to know that my generation might not live to grow up - much less middle-aged or old - thanks to a world suddenly grown far smaller and more dangerous than the one in which our parents came of age. The children of post-911 should find plenty to identify with in Vicky's crisis of hope and faith, and much encouragement in its resolution.

A Worthy Successor to "Meet the Austins"
By Kathryn
I thoroughly enjoyed "Meet the Austins" and hoped "The Moon by Night" would be half as good. It was even better. I like that "Meet the Austins" gave an introduction to the family, and I found them a very nice family in deed- loving and Christian but still very believable, with realistic problems.

"The Moon by Night" takes place about two years later. Mother and Daddy have decided to move the family to New York, but to soften the blow they get there by way of a summer long cross-country camping trip.

It is on this trip we get to know Vicky Austin even better. She is fourteen now, and going through a very confusing phase. She's not sure what she believes about God, or the world outside her safe home on the hill. Complicating things even more is Vicky's relationship with Zachary, a boy who seems to show up wherever they make camp.

I could really relate to Vicky-every confusing emotion she had about Zach I felt too, as I read. I understood her questions about God, and I know I've had similiar ponderings. And I was very satisfied with her conclusions.

I would HIGHLY reccomend "The Moon By Night" to any teen looking for a good read. I would definitely suggest reading "Meet the Austins" first, though this book has enough background you can enjoy it without any previous introduction to the family.

Summer Romance
By Erika Sorocco
At the tender age of 14-years-old, Vicky Austin is filled with uncertainty about her life. She feels out of place, and, unlike the rest of her family, she feels unsure about what she wants to make of herself when she gets older. But when her parents decide to take a cross-country camping trip, she couldn't be more exciting. On the way, for the first time ever in her life, she meets up with a boy (a gorgeous one for that matter), named Zachary, who is actually interested in her. And she's interested in him too. But as he pops up at every one of the Austin family's camping stops, the family begins becoming aggravated with the boy. Now Vicky is becoming even more confused, what with suddenly having a boy's attention on top of everything else. Will Vicky ever be able to sort out her problems, or will her "difficult year" last longer than she actually thinks.
Another excellent novel in the Austin series. Madeleine L'Engle has touched on a subject that affects people of all ages, and adds a bit of romance to liven things up. A must-read book for everyone, especially for girls ages 12-16.

NYPD Confidential: Power and Corruption in the Country's Greatest Police Force, by Leonard Levitt

For years, the police commissioner and the mayor of New York City have duked it out for publicity, credit, and power. Some have translated their stardom into success after leaving office, while others have been hung out to dry. In the battle for control of the country’s most powerful police force, these high-status government officials have often chosen political expediency over public honesty. The result is a legacy of systemic corruption and cover-ups that is nothing less than shocking.

Respected journalist Leonard Levitt has covered the NYPD for New York Newsday, and the New York Post among other papers. His columns have made him persona non grata in police headquarters. In NYPD Confidential, he reveals everything he’s discovered throughout his decades-long career. With amazing details of backroom deals and larger-than-life powerbrokers, Levitt lays bare the backstabbing, power-grabs, and chaotic internal investigations that have run the NYPD’s reputation into the ground in the past—and the forces conspiring to do so once again.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. When he covered the NYPD for Newsday, Levitt had access to all levels of the country's largest law enforcement agency, and now the Edgar winner (Conviction) catalogues dirty cops and departmental scandals. While he doesn't withhold credit where it's due (such as in the World Trade Center attacks), Levitt is most interested in the corrupt underbelly of America's largest police department. [S]acrificing truth for image while acting in secrecy is the department's M.O., he says. Both the 1970s Knapp Commission corruption hearings and the Mollen Commission in the 1990s underscored that dirty cops weren't confined to the lower ranks—the dishonesty reached all the way to the highest echelons. Examining some of the department's most notorious acts of violence—e.g., the torturing of Abner Louima, the shooting death of the unarmed Amadou Diallo—he has little praise for supposedly tough-on-crime mayor Giuliani. Some readers' eyes may cross at the sheer abundance of names and dates (a time line offers some help), but Levitt's account is an engrossing in-depth look at scandal inside the NYPD. (July)

Review
"This is a veteran reporter's inside story about the New York City Police Department. It's a fascinating read. I couldn't put it down. Leonard Levitt delves into the murky backroom deals of City Hall, and the missing pieces to the NYPD's corruption fall skillfully into place."--Frank Serpico "One thing you can be sure of: 35,000 New York cops always were the first to read Lenny Levitt's stories every time. It was true comedy to watch him, small and with a big pad, go down the hall in headquarters as top officials, brass jangling, egos scraping the ceiling, flew into their offices. Levitt's book also is depressing when he tells of an innocent being shot. Amadou Diallo was shot forty-one times by police in his Bronx doorway. The case was moved to Albany, where the only thing you could say about a cop was 'not guilty.' You will read every page of this book, as I did."--Jimmy Breslin "When you read about the political and personal agendas at the top of the NYPD, it makes you feel sorry for the honest copys who signed on to protect and serve."--Bob Ingle, coauthor of The Soprano State  "Len Levitt's behind-the-scenes account of the NYPD is in the tradition of hard-hitting New York police reporters such as Jacob Riis and Lincoln Steffens. I find his work fascinating."--Thomas Reppeto, former president of the Citizens Crime Commission of New York City, and coauthor of NYPD: A City and Its Police  "Eye-opening reporting on America’s largest and most powerful police force."-- Kirkus Reviews "Want to always feel in the know? Len Levitt's website is the place to go. Controversial, informative, insightful: he never hesitates to tackle an issue or render an opinion." --WILLIAM BRATTON, Chief of Police, LAPD, former Police Commissioner, NYPD "Lenny Levitt is the Walter Winchell of the NYPD. Some love to read him. Some hate to read him. But everybody reads him." --JOHN MILLER, Assistant Director, FBI, former NYPD spokesman "Love him or hate him, Len Levitt is required reading for many within the ranks of the NYPD, present and past." --Chief JOHN F. TIMONEY, Miami Police Department and former NYPD First Deputy Commissioner

Author of Practical Homicide Investigation
By Vernon J. Geberth
NYPD CONFIDENTIAL:
Power and Corruption in the Country's Greatest Police Force

NYPD Confidential by Leonard Levitt certainly didn't spare any criticisms of the "Brass" at One Police Plaza or even City Hall for that matter. So, Levitt shouldn't have been surprised that the Police Commissioner, Ray Kelly and the other two major subjects of his book, Mayors Giuliani and Bloomberg didn't respond to his request for interviews. Levitt was already on record as having criticized them in his news editorials. Commissioner Kelly even had previously revoked his press credentials after a negative article that Levitt wrote about Kelly. Welcome to the New York City Police Department. "When your in you're a Guest when your out you're a Pest."

I spent twenty-two and a half years in the NYPD in a number of special assignments from the elite Tactical Patrol Force making my way up the ladder through the Detective Division and retiring as the Commander of Bronx Homicide. I can personally attest to what happens to anyone who criticizes the "High Command." I was there during many of the scandals that Lenny describes in his book. Although I thought that I knew most of what had taken place and some of the inside stories behind the news, I was amazed at how much I didn't know after I read Lenny's book. There are certainly some eye-opening details in this book that reveal the naked ambitions of some of the most powerful people I served under during my career with the NYPD. However, one thing I did notice is that Lenny didn't get everything right. That was probably because he was looking at the event through the eyes of a reporter and not a cop. Needless to say, as a dedicated law enforcement professional I found some of the revelations embarrassing. Yet, despite the revelations in NYPD Confidential, I can state unequivocally that there are more good cops than bad cops in the NYPD. As a student of human behavior I can comprehend how some of the folks that Lenny personally identified in NYPD Confidential chose to use political expediency to combat the truth. But is it any different in the federal government or private industry?

Thankfully, I was lucky enough to be assigned to the outer Borough of the Bronx for most of my career and had little interaction with the Headquarters. I found the "Headquarters Mentality" to be treacherous not to mention how devastating it was to people's careers. I think that Lenny did get it right regarding the egos, attitudes and rivalries, which permeate One Police Plaza. But, sadly, the duplicity of these folks will continue to be played out each and every day.

Even in his introduction Lenny admits that most of the police officials who did talk to him did so anonymously and that included high ranking members of the department. You have to read this book to understand how and why people like Commissioner Ray Kelly, who has been described as a megalomaniac in NYPD blogs, as well as others mentioned in this book can be dangerous adversaries and will go to any lengths to destroy the careers of anyone whom they suspect as disloyal or a threat to their ambitions. It's a testimony to Leonard Levitt that the police officials who did speak to him actually trusted him to keep them nameless. Ask yourself a question. Why?

An Expert Look at Proper and Improper Police Practies

This is an excellent historical and critical look about good and bad police practices from a journalist who has spent years in the forefront overseeing New York police operations. He recalls how John Guido, head of NYPD Internet Affairs for 15 years, observed that corruption has been a part of the New York police culture. Detective Frank Serpico went public with corruption which led to the Knapp Commission in 1970 that found corruption at all levels. There was a continuation of corrupt practices discovered by the Lexom Commission in the 1890s. Police were known to shake down the public and criminals. The Knapp Commission discovered officers known as "grass eaters" and "meat eaters" depending on the degree of corrupt practices in which they engaged. The police had a culture of covering up their misdoings. Reports were altered to make the police falsely appear correct. The highest uniformed officer, the Chief Inspector, admitted to receiving improper gifts from business leaders. Reports of corruption were reported to Mayor John Lindsay, who looked the other way in hopes of keeping the police ready in case of riots, which did occur.

Ironically, after the Knapp Commission, police leadership focused more on preventing policy corruption than on fighting crime. There was less managerial concern about the rising crime rate than on avoiding corrupt practices. Precinct cops and squad detectives were steered away from making drug arrests, which had led to kickbacks. Instead, arrests were made by specialized units, which resulted in decreased arrest rates. Broken police command led to tragic consequences.

The police were left to continue monitoring themselves. Yet, 33 officers were convicted of drug related charges. The Mollen Commission studied the police and concluded that officers placed loyalty to each other above the truth. Kelly slowly and reluctantly removed some senior officer alleged to be part of cover-ups. A permanent police monitoring agency was proposed but Mayor Guiliani opposed the idea.

Ray Kelly as Police Commissioner saw the murder rate decline during his tenure. He was known for fighting police corruption. His successful tenure at lowering crime helped boost the image of Mayor Rudy Guiliani. Yet Guiliani replaced him with William Bratton.

Bratton had NYPD increase arrest of "quality of life" crimes such as squeegee people, graffiti writers, people public urinating, shoplifters, marijuana dealers and users, etc.

Britton's successes made him more popular than was Mayor Guiliani. Guiliani was not happy with being overshadowed.

1,000 officers, or 4% of all officers, were in the Narcotics Division. Since 30% of crime was related to drugs, Bratton decided to transfer more police into the Narcotics Division. Once again, Bratton received more praise for this than did Guiliani. Guiliani demanded the police press office be reduced from 35 to 17, one less than the 16 who composed the Mayor's press office. Bratton objected, stating he ran the department. The head of the Press Corps refused to fire people as directed by the Mayor and resigned instead.

Giuliani's office began criticizing Bratton for out of town appearances. It is against Department policy to accept outside reward for public service and it was hinted those appearances violated that. Bratton signed a book contract that received more criticism. Bratton resigned.

Howard Safir was named Police Commissioner. Giuliani swung the spotlight back to his office. Crime continued decreasing. Giuliani, in a slap at Bratton, proclaimed Safir as "the greatest Police Commissioner in the history of New York City".
Several police scandals arose. An arrested man was deliberately abused physically and sexually in a police station. Safir canceled appearing before Council to instead attend the Oscars while staying two nights as the guests of George Fellows, the head of Revlon. When this was disclosed in the press, Safir reimbursed Fellows $7,100. There was also a highly controversial shooting of an unarmed Black who had committed no crime by white Streets Crime Unit officers who mistakenly thought he had a gun. Racial tensions arose. Bernard Kerik was named to replace Safir as Commissioner.

Bernard Kerik wrote his autobiography and had an affair with his publisher Judith Regan. She claims the affair was a means Kerik used to get her to publicize the book. He then ended the affair and she claims he stalked and threatened her and her children.

While Giuliani had criticized Bratton for signing a book contract, he was silent when Kerik signed one. Police resources were used to get information for the book. Kerik used police officers to travel to Ohio for research for his book. Kerit stated the work was not during work time and he reimbursed the officers who traveled to Ohio $838.74. He though was fined $2,500 by the Conflict of Interest Board for having the officers work on his book. Kerit also used official police photograph on 9/11 that Guiliani had previously banned their use.

Michael Bloomberg, as Mayor, administers by delegation. Giuliani, in contrast, sought to be in control. Bloomberg brought Raymond Kelly back as Commissioner. Kelly changed the Intelligence Division to hire more people fluent in Arabic, Urdu, and Pashto.

The crime rate continued decreasing. Some claimed more officers were downgrading complaints of crime to lesser offenses. The police became more transparent on public information.

The book offers many useful details and expert analysis. It is great for people interested in police history and administration.

Leonard Levitt's new book NYPD Confidential is a no holds barred look into the NYC Police Department and the corruption, collusion and relationships among mayors, mobsters and politicians. Noone is spared, not mayors, chiefs of police, politicians both local and national, district attorneys or mobsters.
Levitt names names and places and his sources are both named and unamed. Noone has yet denied or disputed any accusations made in this book.
As a NYC resident during the three decades covered in the book I can attest to the voluminous cases of police and political corruption reported so frequently in the daily newspapers. Levitt, however, goes much further into the details of what went on as well as shocking new allegations against people in power that the public was never aware of until now.
This is a very powerful book and I strongly suggest that any person that believes that power does not corrupt will surely change their minds after reading this book.
