From Publishers Weekly
After a 30-year career that engendered dozens of bestselling novels of international intrigue, Ludlum died in the spring of 2001, just before publication of The Cassandra Compact, the second title in the Covert-One biotech series. This third Covert-One opus co-written with spy novelist Gayle Lynds (Mosaic), who also worked on the first Covert-One epic, The Hades Factor reprises the over-the-top, almost parodic tone of its predecessors with more antics from undercover agent army Lt. Col. Jonathan Smith, M.D. A horrific explosion destroys the Paris lab of computer genius Emile Chambord on the eve of his breakthrough in the development of a revolutionary molecular DNA computer that has the ability to control virtually all the world's computerized operations. Overnight, military satellites, international data banks and worldwide communications threaten to crash. Faced with the enormity of this malevolent power play, Dr. Jon Smith sets out to find the perpetrators. Arriving in Paris just as Chambord's daughter, Th‚rŠse, is being abducted, Smith trails the terrorists to Toledo, Spain. Just when this thrilling setup promises a return to vintage Ludlum, Smith's corny pals, CIA spook Randi Russell and British MI6 spy Peter Howell, pop up and they all go bumbling across Europe to avert a nuclear holocaust. Gainsaying the old saw, "You can't take it with you," Ludlum bequeaths yet another ghostly burlesque of his fabled plotting talents.

Ludlum-like but not Ludlum
By R. Shaff
If one is fond of this genre, one will find an interesting trend beginning to develop. Several well-known authors are taking on co-authors (apprentices actually) in their latest offerings. Patterson with his latest, Cussler with his latest, Clancy for some time and now, Ludlum with his previous two and this one, THE PARIS OPTION. Of course, Mr. Ludlum passed away over a year ago (an incredible loss to the literary world) and anything with his name will be co-authored or a reissue. For those of us who are die-hard Ludlumites, any taste from the Master is welcome. However, these co-authored books are less than authentic and THE PARIS OPTION is no exception.
Robert Ludlum was the absolute ruler of intrigue. If you are reading this review and haven't read a "real" Ludlum, pick up The Parsifal Mosaic or The Matarese Circle or the Bourne series (unlike a previous reviewer, I felt the Bourne movie didn't do the book justice). These books will absolutely put you on your heels. Ludlum had a way of telekenetically transporting the reader into the story. You are there...with the characters....truly spellbinding! In the co-authored books, apparently Mr. Ludlum's only contributions are the short outlines and a mentoring review (this, per an interview with Gayle Lynds). In the combined efforts, Ms. Lynds (and Philip Shelby in THE CASSANDRA COMPACT) develops the storyline and characters, which is what most hard-line Ludlum fans miss the most from Mr. Ludlum himself. While Ms. Lynds does a reasonable job of creating a suspenseful plot, it falls short of Ludlumite expectations. I would even go as far to say that if this was a standalone offering from Ms. Lynds, it might receive a more favorable critical review if for no other reason than not having to live up to the Ludlum standard.
To the story.......Jon Smith, our resident M.D. and superspy of Covert-One, returns from THE HADES FACTOR to unravel the mystery of the missing DNA computer. The brilliant French scientist, Emile' Chambord, is clandestinely putting the finishing touches on the world's first DNA computer (a computer combining life and computational sciences thereby creating a "living" machine) in Paris' own Pasteur Institute when an incredible explosion shatters the Institute and ostensibly Dr. Chambord and his invention. When Smith discovers that his friend, Marty Zellerbach, was in the Institute working with Chambord and was seriously injured in the blast, he drops his current research and heads for Paris.
Once there, the mysterious explosion, the frightening potential of the DNA computer and the uncertainty of Chambord's death throw Smith into the middle of an international crisis. An unknown cabal calling itself the Scarlet Shield, a pan-Islamic organization, is apparently behind the terror. Ultimately, Smith is joined by his spook cohorts from HADES, Randi Russell of the CIA and Peter Howell, retired (sort of) with MI6.
The plot is timely and has the requisite sharp edges. The character definition is moderate (better if one has previously read HADES) and the climax is probably the best part of the book. All-in-all, a decent read but if you're looking for this book to have the delictable flavor of a Ludlum thriller, you're likely to be sorely disappointed.

Just let your mind relax and enjoy!
By Semper Fi!
Wow! Again I am very happy that I do not read the reviews before I read the novel. Of the 38 reviews 23 gave the book a bad rating (1-2 stars). I on the other hand gave it 4 stars. I have given all 3 books in this covert 1 series 4 stars. After skimming over a few of the reviews I realize how lucky I am. With every book I read I try to have a very open mind. So what if the truth is exaggerated. DNA COMPUTER! That is the basis of this book and If it gets too technical then I just skip over that section which usually is small.

The book grabbed my attention immidiately and never waned. Our hero again is Lt. Col. Jon Smith, MD. My wife is in the medical field and I was in a Navy hosiptal for quite awhile and never have I met a Doc like this Smith. Not only is he a top research doc but a super James Bond hero type. But, that does not stop me from enjoying the book. There are 3 more heroes and one of them is his nerd buddy from childhood days, Marty. The other two are Randi from the CIA who is also his sister-in-law and his old buddy from MI6 Peter Howell. The 4 of them make an interesting team.

Marty was working on the DNA computer with the genius DR. Chambord at the Pasteur Institute in Paris when there was a huge explosion. Marty is injured but he makes it okay in time to join the other 3 in their search for who did it and what happened to the computer. A number of twists and turns happen such as Chambord's daughter gets kidnapped. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and I hope you do too.

DOESN'T DESERVE THE POOR RATINGS SOME HAVE GIVEN
By Kay's Husband
The last few years I have been picking up 2nd hand Ludlum's at a local bookstore, and have a few 'Covert-One' books as well. Since I have never read much Ludlum I have no prior opinion as to what comprises his books.

The first thing to realize with the Covert-One books is that someone other than Ludlum wrote them. That would seem elementary with many answering, 'tell me something new'. I just think that needs to stated, possibly even restated, as many reviews want to grade the Covert-One series as though Robert Ludlum wrote them, which as most of us know, he did not. Whether the authors who write the Covert-One series are actually following a Ludlum template, or writing free style, making the plot up as they go, is beyond my knowledge and beyond my interest.

This present book, THE PARIS OPTION, I found to be very readable, a book that causes one to continue reading as I have been doing for the last few nights. I find nothing amiss in the plot nor with the characters, and whether it is a DNA or molecular computer I could care less, as the plot assumes a super computer with carbon as its base rather than silicone. Such a computer can over ride or take over lesser computers. Does such a computer exist? I don't know, but it is scary to think so, unless you have ownership of it.

I feel as Thomas Jefferson that "I cannot live without books", however, I will not tolerate a poorly written book nor will I continue reading a book that is boring, this book, THE PARIS OPTION, is neither poorly written nor boring. In fact I greatly enjoyed it.

Anyone stating an opinion that this is not a Robert Ludlum book is only stating the obvious. Of course the Covert-One series is not by Ludlum, but stands very well as a good read on its own. As far as 'using' his name, that is what the Ludlum estate wants, so there is no crime in that either. From what I have seen, both at the local library and here on Amazon, reader interest seems very high with all these books.

So for those that are die hard Ludlum fans, I suggest reading only books you are certain he wrote, while for those others of us that look for only an interesting tale, regardless of author, then I suggest these books on Covert-One can be both worthwhile and interesting reads.

Vital to the preservation of hip hop's culture
By A Customer
Where do I begin? This book chronicles the beginnings of the hip hop culture as no other periodicle has ever done... Written in 1984, it is immersed in the legend and lore of the time from which it was born... The lucid writing is gripping and revealing, offering a veritable cornucopia of jewels, gems, and unparalleled insight into the roots of breakdancing, graffiti, rapping, and DJing (the four elements - although they are not enumerated as such in the text)...
In other words, if you get a chance, peep it... On the real, kid, even though it's crazy rare, it's a piece of your culture -- OUR culture... If you EVER see it, pick it up... It's incredibly rare and hard to find!
Chill,

Absolutely wonderful read. This filled in a lot of gaps for me on Hip Hop's origins. I thought the sections on Rap and Graff were particularly interesting. We run a non-profit out of Utah that focuses on Hip Hop arts and this article has been a great resource, both to the staff and to the community. Hoping to get my hands on a printed copy some day!

"There's just one hunk of funny anecdote after another, quotes from everyone who ever mattered in the movie biz, and the thing is jam-packed with screenwriterly advice. Plus it's hilariously funny, ribald, sexy and brilliant."―Liz Smith

In The Devil's Guide to Hollywood, bestselling author and legendary bad-boy screenwriter Joe Eszterhas tells everything he knows about the industry, its players and screenwriting itself―from the first blank sheet of paper in the Olivetti to the size of the credit on the one-sheet.

Often practical and always entertaining, The Devil's Guide to Hollywood distills everything one of Hollywood's most accomplished screenwriters knows about the business, from writing advice to negotiation tricks, from the wisdom of past players to the feuds of current ones. Eszterhas has selected his personal pantheon of the most loved and loathed players in the business and treats the reader to a treasure trove of stories, quotes and wisdom from those luminaries, who include William Goldman (loathes) and Zsa Zsa Gabor (loves).

The Devil's Guide to Hollywood could only have been written by someone who loves the business as much as Eszterhas does―but who also has its number.

"Eszterhas delivers a dishy, catty mix of reminiscences and Hollywood trivia…his forte is skewering sycophants and phonies in this opinionated showcase of the underside of Hollywood life."―Publishers Weekly

After 31 years in the Hollywood trenches and 15 films including Flashdance, Basic Instinct and Showgirls, screenwriter Eszterhas delivers a dishy, catty mix of reminiscences and Hollywood trivia in the guise of a handbook for wannabe screenwriters. Writing in a format perfect for readers with ADD, Eszterhas offers hundreds of instructive epigraphs, each an excuse for a short, gossipy paragraph. He includes a smattering of basic advice (avoid having your ideas ripped off by going to pitch meetings with a witness), warnings about producers, agents, directors and actors ("The word star is rats spelled backwards"), self-aggrandizing tales of wheeling and dealing, and tangents about various sexcapades (his own and other screenwriters'). He doesn't stint on snide comments about people he's worked with, like Sharon Stone, or about those he's refused to work with, like Michael Ovitz. Eszterhas includes fun quotes from Hollywood legends like Ben Hecht and Raymond Chandler and his fellow Hungarian, Zsa Zsa Gabor, but his forte is skewering sycophants and phonies in this opinionated showcase of the underside of Hollywood life. From Booklist
Eszterhas, whose credits include Basic Instinct, Flashdance, and Jagged Edge, is one of the best-known screenwriters around and has penned a laugh-out-loud funny and useful guide for those who aspire to making it big in Hollywood. Make no mistake: Eszterhas is frank about his aim to write about the commercial aspect of screenwriting. Through quotes, quips, and anecdotes, Eszterhas lays bare the cruel and often downright strange world of moviemaking. From getting paid $4 million for an outline to learning that a rewriter is trying to take credit for one of his films, Eszterhas has an intimate knowledge of the way the business works. He firmly advises aspiring screenwriters not to live in Los Angeles, a city he finds far removed from the rest of the world, and cautions them about talking about their ideas. "Real writers sit down and write; wannabe writers sit around and talk." Aspiring and practical would-be screenwriters looking for good advice will find this offering inspiring and hilarious. From the Inside Flap
In "The Devil's Guide to Hollywood," bestselling author and legendary bad-boy screenwriter Joe Eszterhas tells everything he knows about the industry, its players, and screenwriting itself--from the first blank sheet of paper in the Olivetti to the size of the credit on the one-sheet.
"The Devil's Guide to Hollywood" distills everything one of Hollywood's most accomplished screenwriters knows about the business: from writing advice to negotiation tricks, from the wisdom of past players to the feuds of current ones. Eszterhas dispenses advice as only he can: with his tongue firmly in cheek and a certain finger extended good-naturedly toward the sky. His tips on how to survive in Hollywood are based on his own rugged and real-life experiences: they are not just useful but vastly entertaining. He reveals what he's seen in Hollywood and what he's learned about writing and selling scripts there for record amounts. He also recounts bite-sized takes from personalities he either admires or loathes, sharing the richest, best industry lore that has inspired, amused or enraged him over the years.
"The Devil's Guide to Hollywood" is hilarious, ornery, colorful and wise. It could only have been written by someone who loves the business as much as Eszterhas does--but who also has its number.

Straightalk about Screenwriting
By Eros Faust
Who is Joe Eszterhas? His most famous films are Basic Instinct, Sliver, Showgirls, and Jade. His first screenplay was made into a film which I've always considered one of the most underappreciated movies of all time, F.I.S.T. He has written lots of others.

About the book, I'll be honest, I loved it.

After the New York Times Book Review came out I ordered it immediately. The following Saturday, when I first had the time to devote to it, I spent the entire day reading it from cover to cover (like many of the studio executives who Eszterhas lampooms, my lips must move as a read because I'm a slow reader). Here is my take on it:

First, I think that the chapters are taken from Eszterhas' writing notebooks. That is a good thing. This is the raw data of years of reading, listening, and contemplating Hollywood and the screenwriters craft. It is filled with seemingly good advice, but advice you'd never get from, say, Richard Walter, head of the Screenwriting Department at UCLA. This is less genteel advice. This is straightalking from a veteran who has been in the trenches, survived the battles, and is here is help teach other screenwriters how to make it in the business.

Don't expect a smooth flowing narrative, except for the last chapter about his unproduced screenplay---"SACRED COW"---about and American President caught on film having sex with a cow, and owning up to it when he is caught. That Chapter, unlike the others, was written as a single essay. The remainder of the book is a collection of thoughts about writers, agents, directors, producers, actors, and Hollywood from someone who knows.

P.S. Why did I give it only 4 stars instead of 5? Amazon suffers from grade inflation. To Kill a Mockingbird gets 5 stars from me. 4 stars is still pretty darn good.

Truthful?
By D.S.
First of all, I am one of many hundred of thousands who are wannabe screenwriters/writers. I do not live in L.A. and have no intention to. That being said, I am still learning the "industry".

Joe Esterhas, a highly successful screenwriter best known for writing the films, Basic Instinct, Flashdance and Showgirls has written a funny but bitter book. This is not an autobiography but more of a personal journal type, using quotes to express his highly charged emotions and opinions in an easy to read style that gives plenty of advice to writers pursuing the Hollywood dream.

By the end of the book, after the laughing and wondering if what you read is true, or a collection of rumors and whispers by a man who is tired of the Hollywood bashing of screenwriters, seeeking revenge.

But make no mistake, you will learn:
- He hates Robert McKee and his seminars
- He hates agents
- He hates producers
- He hates directors
- He hates studio execs
- Loves and his very proud of his Hungarian heritage
- Admits openly of his own personal demons and sexual conquests

Simply put, he hates anyone in Hollywood who screws the writer over and in his eyes, it happens way too often.

Also be forwarned of foul language and lots of sex. The book is still very good with short quips to hold one's attention and there is some great advice to be taken. But as a newcomer, I am taking most of it with a grain of salt.

The screenwriter as marketer of Hollywood gossip
By Ken Kardash
Having already published one salacious account of his life as a Hollywood screenwriter (Hollywood Animal), Joe Eszterhas has decided to repackage the story as an ostensible guide for screenwriters. The title is revealing: if the writer can't decide if he is god or devil, we should be suspicious of his stated objective, if not his grandiosity. I enjoyed his irreverent tirade about the film industry from a writer's perspective. But despite being organized into chapters that address the steps in film production from screenplay to theatrical release, this is not a "how- to" guide. It is actually a collection of quotations and anecdotes only loosely related to the author's undeniable experience with producing commercially (if not critically) successful screenplays. These are presented in sound bite-sized entries stretched out with generous spacing. Each comes with a cheesy heading - such as "Reelspeak": definitions of supposedly insider vocabulary. All the empty space makes this a much quicker read than the 360-ish pages would lead you to expect. Another caveat is that many of the tasteless but amusing anecdotes he claims to have "captured" are never sourced. Some of the accounts attributed to Marilyn Monroe and others are so unflattering that I wonder if these are less gossip than examples of screenwriting craft.

I give it three stars for being a light, fun read for anyone interested in filmmaking from the screenwriter's point of view.

Tommy Gun: How General Thompson's Submachine Gun Wrote History, by Bill Yenne

The Trench Broom. The Annihilator. The Persuader. The Chopper. The Chicago Typewriter. The Tommy Gun.  The Thompson submachine gun has gone by many names, and for nearly a century the gun’s image has been indelibly marked on the popular consciousness. In this broad-reaching cultural and military history, Bill Yenne charts the tommy gun's unpredictable and one-of-a-kind career, from its infamy in the hands of Al Capone and the Chicago mobsters, to its shady days with the IRA, to its indelible place in the arsenal of World War II, and its truly immortal and ongoing role in Hollywood.  The tommy gun is without a doubt the most famous, and the most infamous, American firearm of the twentieth century. Since its birth in the aftermath of World War I, the tommy gun has enjoyed a varied career on both sides of the law. Though General John T. Thompson invented it for the American military, it first found notoriety thanks to its part in events such at St. Valentine's Day Massacre. But when the United States entered World War II, the gun's true power as an essential, life-saving weapon made it an iconic weapon of the American GI. Full of incredible stories from the battlefields of Europe and the Pacific, America's gangland, and Hollywood studio back lots, Bill Yenne's Tommy Gun is the definitive story of this unique American icon.

From Publishers Weekly
The Thompson submachine gun is one of the weapons that define the 20th century. In the hands of soldiers and insurgents, police and criminals, it has made its mark from American cities to the jungles of Africa. The Thompson remains a feature of movies, novels and songs. Yenne (Superfortress), a well-known writer on military subjects, presents the Tommy gun's technical and social history from its genesis during WWI—designed by Gen. John Taliaferro Thompson—as a projected trench broom through its spectacular career as a gangster weapon during Prohibition. Yenne explains the business and technical dynamics that refined the Thompson's design and made it marketable even to Depression-slashed military budgets. The Thompson saw widespread use during WWII as the British/American counterpart of the German Schmeisser and the Russian PPSH. In every theater of war, the Thompson's high rate of fire, the hitting power of its .45 cartridge and its relative accuracy more than compensated for its 10-pound weight and short range. Rendered officially obsolete by cheaper, simpler designs, the Thompson is an American, an immortal icon, says Yenne in this informative history. 45 b&w photos. (Oct.) Where are the editors and fact checkers?
By John B. Coffin
Except for collecting war stories about Thompson users, there is no reason for this book. 'The Gun that Made the Twenties Roar,' etc. cover the same ground.

There are howling errors throughout which show that the author lacks enough knowledge to appreciate the significance of his subject.

E.g.: He thinks the Browning Automatic Rifle (BAR) operated on the blowback system. No one-man portable gun can fire rifle ammunition by blowback. The Thompson--and the 1918 Bergmann--were innovative in using pistol ammunition, which CAN be handled by blowback. The BAR is gas-operated, as 10 seconds of research would show.

He thinks that the WWI stop-gap rifle issued by the US Army (the M1917, or 'American Enfield') was a new design and/or an improvement on the M1903A3. The production of this gun, involving General Thompson, is an amazing story of an abandoned British prototype frantically put into production for an army that could not be equipped in time.

A weapon with many names...
By James D. Crabtree
The Thompson submachine gun has a unique place in history and this book brings its story alive. The weapon was designed by a former Army ordnance officer for use by the troops in WWI... but it was too late for that war. The weapon was refined to re-equip the American peacetime Army... but budget cuts and bureacratic confusion prevented its adoption. It was marketed to police forces for the purpose of law and order... but its best-known owners were the gangsters of the 1920s and 1930s.

Bill Yenne's writing brings this topic alive and the illustrations gives the reader a good idea of what the weapon was, and still is. A fascinating book, it is great reading not just for what happened with the Tommy Gun but what might have been. He even looks at the Tommy Gun in popular culture and talks about groups who get together and shoot these classic weapons.

Keep looking
By J. Kindred
Looking for a good book on the history of the Thompson submachine gun? If so keep looking, this isn't one of them. Fine example of someone writing a book on a topic they know absolutely nothing about. The author and Amazon both should be ashamed for charging people good money for such a worthless book. Too many mistakes, too many myths retold.

From reading this book I have the impresson the author has never heard of the fine Thompson books by Tracie Hill.

Looking for Anne of Green Gables: The Story of L. M. Montgomery and Her Literary Classic, by Irene Gammel

In June 1908, a red-haired orphan appeared on to the streets of Boston and a modern legend was born. That little girl was Anne Shirley, better known as Anne of Green Gables, and her first appearance was in a book that has sold more than 50 million copies worldwide and been translated into more than 35 languages (including Braille). The author who created her was Lucy Maud Montgomery, a writer who revealed very little of herself and her method of crafting a story. On the centenary of its publication, Irene Gammel tells the braided story of both Anne and Maud and, in so doing, shows how a literary classic was born. Montgomery's own life began in the rural Cavendish family farmhouse on Prince Edward Island, the place that became the inspiration for Green Gables. Mailmen brought the world to the farmhouse's kitchen door in the form of American mass market periodicals sparking the young Maud's imagination. From the vantage point of her small world, Montgomery pored over these magazines, gleaning bits of information about how to dress, how to behave and how a proper young lady should grow. She began to write, learning how to craft marketable stories from the magazines' popular fiction; at the same time the fashion photos inspired her visual imagination. One photo that especially intrigued her was that of a young woman named Evelyn Nesbit, the model for painters and photographers and lover of Stanford White. That photo was the spark for what became Anne Shirley. Blending biography with cultural history, Looking for Anne of Green Gables is a gold mine for fans of the novels and answers a trunk load of questions: Where did Anne get the "e" at the end of her name? How did Montgomery decide to give her red hair? How did Montgomery's courtship and marriage to Reverend Ewan Macdonald affect the story? Irene Gammel's dual biography of Anne Shirley and the woman who created her will delight the millions who have loved the red haired orphan ever since she took her first step inside the gate of Green Gables farm in Avonlea.

From Booklist
The 100th anniversary of the publication of the still-popular Anne of Green Gables (50 million copies sold to date) is being greeted by a flurry of activity, including a new edition of the novel; a prequel, Before Green Gables (2008), written by Canadian Budge Wilson; and, now, this new biography of Anne’s creator and alterego, Lucy Maude Montgomery. Gammel, a Canadian academic and editor of several earlier collections of Anne-related essays, is clearly a fan, and, frankly, her prodigiously researched and breathlessly written study will have its primary appeal to other fans. Her revelations “for the first time” of the inspirations for Anne’s face and the character itself provide persuasive answers to some lingering questions about the genesis of the fiery redhead. But they will be of interest principally to what Margaret Atwood has tartly called “The Annery.” General readers will be interested, however, in Gammel’s careful deconstruction of the context—early-twentieth-century popular culture—for Anne’s creation and the complex personality of the woman who found refuge from her own unhappy life in the creation of Anne and her beloved Avonlea. --Michael Cart

Review

“Interesting and well-researched.” ―The New York Times

“Drawing on a vast array of neglected and unknown sources, this groundbreaking study establishes new connections between Montgomery's isolated life in Cavendish, P.E.I., and the metropolitan existence that she consumed vicariously through magazines published in New York, Boston and Philadelphia. Looking for Anne is a highly readable, top-rate study that [provides] a new spin on Montgomery's text.” ―Globe and Mail

“Rather than simply rehashing available material, Ryerson professor and noted literary researcher Irene Gammel … explores the social and literary influences that guided and inspired Montgomery in creating her impetuous heroine. … Even more fascinating is the amount of inspiration Montgomery found in the myriad of current magazines and journals that made their way into her hands via the desk of her grandmother the town postmistress. ” ―Quill and Quire

“Looking for Anne is a fascinating and wonderful book. It brings forward an amazing wealth of new information, filling in many gaps (some of which I didn't even know existed!), and is presented in a captivating narrative that is very well organized and a great read. The research is fabulous…. It's rather like the Road to Xanadu.” ―Carole Gerson, Simon Fraser University and co-editor of History of the Book in Canada

“... The material is incredible, the interpretive work unsurpassable. ” ―Holly Virginia Blackford, Rutgers University-Camden.

Review

“To celebrate Anne’s centennial, there are two new reissues of the original book, yearlong celebrations on Prince Edward Island (where the story is set) and, for those who can’t get enough, two prequels?. Perhaps the most interesting addition, however, is Irene Gammel’s Looking for Anne, a well researched ? dual biography of Anne and her creator.”?New York Times “Drawing on a vast array of neglected and unknown sources, this groundbreaking study establishes new connections between Montgomery’s isolated life in Cavendish, PEI, and the metropolitan existence that she consumed vicariously through magazines published in New York, Boston and Philadelphia?. Looking for Anne is a highly readable, top-rate study that will provide a new spin on Montgomery’s text.”?The Globe and Mail “By combining detailed passages from Montgomery’s journals?as well as photos and letters written to and from her?with small sections of original prose, Gammel casts Maud as a character in her own biography. With this unique blending of researched information and descriptive, literary passages, Gammel has made what could have been very dry material engaging to scholars and general readers alike.”?Quill & Quire “Very accessible yet meticulously researched and annotated, Looking for Anne delves into the ‘perfect storm of inspiration’ for this enduring 100-year-old Canadian classic.”?Ursula Fuchs, Winnipeg Free Press “Gammel’s book uncovers for the first time the multi-layer quality of Anne? the book gives a frank and uncensored portrait of a woman who was literally born before her time.”?Mary MacKay, The Guardian

The definitive study of how Anne of Green Gables came about.
By Nancy Smith
I recently made a trip to Prince Edward Island and picked up a number of books related to L.M. Montgomery and Anne of Green Gables. I actually had passed on this one because I saw that Amazon had such a fantastic price on it. Anyway, as an Anne of Green Gables and L.M. Montgomery junkie, I've read practically every book on Maud and her work and this one is by far the best. The research in this book is positively amazing. Kudos to the author for digging so deeply and for taking the time to be so complete and thorough. However, I don't want people to think that this is some dry scholarly book, on the contrary, it is almost impossible to put down. Not only does the author dig up facts, she analyzes them with exceptional insight and brillance. She knows her subjects backwards and forwards. At times during the book, one could almost sense the presence of Maud Montgomery herself. It is as though she whispered her secrets to the author who then revealed them to us the readers. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves Anne or Maud. It is as close as a book can come to being perfect.

Picked it up by chance, Can't put it down
By JMD
I read the Anne of GG books as a girl and watched the PBS movies countless times, but I'm not an Anne fanatic. For example, I've never visited PEI. :) I also don't really like to read biographies. I saw the book at my library and picked it up out of curiosity. So I'm not the typical reviewer of this book...

But I can't put it down! It reads like a mystery about how Maud was inspired to write Anne. It also has reflective commentary on the themes in the Anne books, which is interesting to think about in terms of what Anne meant to me while I was her age. And the reliance on Maud's diaries for piecing together history is intriguing to me, as someone who has sporadically kept diaries.

Overall, I am thoroughly enjoying the book -- it is my guilty pleasure every day.

A Biography of the Book, not the Person
By Cherie Miller
I was disappointed by two aspects of this book. The first was the dramatic style of writing by the author. Just write, we get it.

The second was that I expected a biography of Lucy Maud Montgomery's life, but I really didn't get a sense of who she was. This book ends near the publication date of "Anne," so I don't know anything about Maud's marriage, move west, birth of her 2 sons (I don't even know their names!), and when she and her husband die.

This is more of a scholarly look at the life of the book, instead of it's creator, so I was disappointed in that. There are also some allusions to lesbianism, but they're unfounded. No facts are brought to bear on that allegation. It just seems too "fashionable" to publish some "dirt" on this pastor's wife. It's speculation - looking back on 100 years of history - and I didn't like it. (The same thing was said when the author alludes that Hans Christian Anderson was a homosexual.) If you're going to make such statements, at least provide me with FACTS, not speculation. It's tawdry.
