Death Changes Everything

The world as you once knew it is shattered by a death that has left a profound void in your life. Whether this death was sudden or you had time to prepare, you are probably feeling disoriented and in deep shock. As a parent, however, there is a particular gravitas to your grief: A child you love is sharing your loss. Even as this most profound of losses is shaking you to the core, you must somehow rise to the challenge and assist your child, who is also grieving

Like adults, children grieve when someone close to them dies. Whether your child has lost a parent or a sibling, a grandparent or a dear friend, you need to be there to provide support, guidance, reassurance, honesty, and patience. Most important, you need to provide a strong and loving presence.

There Are Many Faces of Grief

The first step of your journey through grief is to appreciate that you and your child may grieve differently. There are as many ways to grieve as there are grievers, so don’t try to fit your grief into anyone else’s mold or expectations. While some grievers cry day and night, others feel completely numb. While some are exhausted and feel the need to nap frequently, others may stay awake for days. Some may be ravenously hungry while others have no appetite at all. Some need to talk while others long for solitude, and some experience heightened libido while others lose all interest in sex. In later chapters we’ll look closely at various styles of adult grief, for now it’s simply important to remember that for both children and adults, normal grief has many faces.

How Children Perceive Death

Children grieve differently from adults. Up to the age of ten, they will typically have difficulty understanding what death means. There are three reasons why this is so:

1. Young children often aren’t given accurate, age- appropriate information about what death means.

2. It takes them a long time to fully appreciate the meaning of death itself, since they have trouble grasping some basic concepts about death.

3. Young children are likely to blame themselves unnecessarily whenever someone they love dies. This is called “magical thinking.”

Children of all ages tend to believe they have somehow caused the death, and correcting this view is different for younger ones than it is for preteens and teens.

Later in this book we’ll go over how to explain the facts of a death clearly and accurately to a child of any age. For now, we’ll simply focus on what helps kids of various ages understand the concept of death. In a quick summary:

• Preverbal children often need comfort more than words.

• Two- to five- year- olds typically struggle with the fundamental concepts that determine a death and require loads of patience.

• Six- to nine- year- olds tend to become overwhelmed by the notion that death is universal, benefiting from appropriate information and a great deal of reassurance.

• Preteens grasp the concept of death but tend to intellectualize their loss. They need to be listened to and respected.

• Teens often bring a tricky emotional package to their grief and require careful attention and support.

The Three Phases of Grief

There are three rather predictable phases on the grief journey for adults and children alike:

Phase One: Early Grief: During early grief you may struggle to come to terms with the reality of what has happened. Consequently, your earliest reactions might be a defiant denial, high anxiety, or numbness.

Phase Two: The Second Storm of Grief: Often occurring around six months after a death, the second storm is a time of renewed deep pain. This phase of grief may seem unbearable, and you may even wonder if you will survive the storm.

Phase Three: The Search for Meaning: Eventually, you start to shape a new and meaningful life despite your loss. Sometimes during this phase you may even feel gratitude for lessons learned on the journey.

Since grief is not a linear pro cess, these phases often overlap. Adults, for example, may grapple with painful feelings while still denying that the death ever happened, or may discover a new purpose in life even while dealing with painful or unresolved memories. And children may struggle with the pain of a loss before they are fully capable of understanding the concept of death.

Grief Does Not Come with an Expiration Date

It was Robert Benchley who said, “Death ends a life, not a relationship.” Learning to go on after loss often means rethinking your relationship with the one who has died. For many, both adults and children, religious belief contributes to the ability to think of the dead in heaven or in some other celestial context. For others, the dead hold a place in their hearts, which inspires them to live well in their memory.

Even once you have made peace with your loss, you may still experience surges of painful grief, called triggers. These may occur on anniversary dates, like birthdays and dates of death, or (even many years after a death) during significant life transitions: high school graduation, marriage, births of children and grandchildren, divorce, retirement. Sometimes, too, the dead return in waking visions, in dreams, or in other seemingly unexplainable ways. The old notion of needing to let go and move on as quickly as possible after a death may no longer be as relevant as establishing ongoing relationships with those who have died. No matter what age you are when the loss occurs, grief may actually be a lifelong pro cess. And perhaps, when someone you cared for deeply has died, it should be.

Preparing for the Journey That Lies Ahead

Grief is tough for everyone; it’s even more difficult when you are also concerned about your child or children. This book will help you to prepare for the great journey ahead of you, and to take heart knowing that you and your child have much to gain by walking together, hand in hand.

Great guidance for grieving families

As a grief educator, who speaks on grief and loss in the lives of children, teens, and adults, I have found this book to be one of the best resources around. Not only is it full of helpful information and suggestions for both adults and children, but it is a compassionate guide for a grieving parent to turn to at a difficult time. I own over 100 books on grief and loss and is one of my top ten recommendations. The reader will learn about the difference between adult and child grief as well as learn such important ideas as how to talk about death to children, returning to school and to work, and the signs when a child may need professional help with their grief. The end of the book has an entire listing of grief support groups and grief centers throughout the US as well as other suggested books and web sites. Highly recommend this.

Comforting Book On Grief Especially To Help Children

As a grief therapist and author myself I found Robert Zucker's advice about how to describe death to a child better than any other I have ever read, "...the person's body has totally stopped working." For very young children he advises being even more specific, "Her eyes don't see, her ears don't hear, her brain can't think or remember." I believe if a child hears this definition he or she might fear less about death.

I was appreciative of the tender story of Jose, a little boy who wanted to die on his own terms. Equally touching was the story of the young child whose greatly admired principal had died suddenly and how a compassionate teacher patiently handled this child's loss and search for understanding. These explicit examples teach us all how to proceed in an area that we will all struggle with in our lives and how to share grief. Death changes us and most of us feel lost in how to process it.

I was particularly touched with the author - who himself is licensed, certified social worker and Fellow in Thanatology - sharing his own story about his beloved grandmother who while a natural storyteller of painful losses of beloved family in the Holocaust she did not herself speak of the death of her 10 year old daughter who had died of Polio. Because the author's grandmother was so naturally distressed by this monumental loss the child's name went unspoken in his family. This loss became what he grew up realizing was a "secret grief." Blessedly, Robert Zucker wrote this book stressing the importance of speaking the deceased person's name whether child or adult.

In the last section of the book the author implores us to encourage a child that it is okay to be happy again and to have a life.

Yes, the gift of life in all of its pain but with all of its glory and meaning, too.

As a professional grief counselor, I have yet to find a better resource on the subject of parental and child grief combined in one book. Robert Zucker has written a guide that is a must have for any grieving family. I highly recommend this book!

Tepid at best

Once upon a time, Stuart Woods could put together a readable, if lightweight story, just something adequate to pass the time with. Maybe a flght or a lazy day on the beach. Not any more. His last few Stone Barrington novels have been unbearable for me and now Woods destroys his Ed Eagle character.

I don't like divulging a lot of the plot of any book because someone else might find "Santa Fe Dead" enjoyable and I don't want to ruin for them.

To make a long story short, Ed Eagle is supposedly the top trial attorney in New Mexico. The story opens as a continuation of the last Eagle book, where his wife took off with some of his money and ultimately tried to kill him. Now she is on trial for the murder of two strangers she mistook for Eagle and his girlfriend. Barbara Eagle escapes from the courthouse in a scene that, like so many others in the book, is simply unbelievable under any circumstances. The trial narrative, what little there is, is also unbelievable as is the jury acquitting her. There is, in fact, nothing believable in the entire book. Not a single bit of the plot; not a single character.

The book is filled with gratuitous sex scenes that serve no purpose except perhaps to titillate any teenage boys who might pick the book up - which wouldn't be a wise idea because, as in the Stone Barrington series, all the characters are never more than a few paragraphs away from consuming still more alcohol.

Eagle is just so well connected. For example, though he lives in New Mexico, he has a concealed carry permit for California. The LA chief of police is his pal, which helps Woods avoid the burden of actually creating a story. Every time Eagle needs something, he just calls his pal, the chief or some other soul. Eagle never does anything - and Woods never has to actually resort to inventiveness.

Eagle's girlfriend isn't even well developed enough to be a stereotype, much less a character. But she does manage to kill a couple of people with absolutely no troublesome involvement with the law.

Eagle flies about in his airplane, which helps avoid all kinds of plot complications and little things like toting guns from place to place.

As soon as Eagle's ex-wife goes on the lam, a lawyer gets charges for escaping lifted. And the former Mrs. Eagle meets a newly minted billionaire. Within days, she marries him, but continues on her murderous ways. Yeah, truly believable.

In the meantime, Woods introduces what at first appears to be an unrelated sub-plot when a movie producer phones Eagle from Rome with a story that his wife and stepson may have been kidnapped. The guy doesn't call the police, he calls Eagle, a total stranger. Eagle finds that the wife and stepson have been murdered and is now the lawyer for Don Wells, a husband and father who doesn't appear to grieve over his loss. Perhaps it is because his dead wife is a centi-millionaire by inheritance and he stands to get it all?

Woods is a decent writer and he turns out good, if often hacknyed, dialog. But the editing is awful in this book. In the first few pages, there were errors from the merely sloppy ("lead" for "led") to the ridiculous: one of the innumerable drinks consumed starts off as bourbon, becomes scotch and than transformed into bourbon again. Later in the book, you can see where Woods or his supposed editor became so sloppy that an even that occurred two pages earlier is denied, like it never happened.

There is no real story here. Every thing is patched together by the merest coincidence instead of being the product of actual plotting and story development. There is no suspense and the characters are totally unbelievable.

As I said, Woods does write well, so if you are facing a long flight or are trapped in an airport waiting for a delayed flight or simply want to kiss a few hours goodbye forever, it is possible that you might enjoy "Santa Fe Dead". I read every page myself, more in awe of how low Woods had sunk, rather than the quality of the story.

Just What I Wanted

This book gives you 100 "difficult" puzzles and 100 "very challenging" puzzles. Although there's no official grading system for Sudoku puzzles, I've done about half the puzzles in this book and I would say those descriptions are accurate. The "difficult" puzzles are hard enough to make me think but not so hard that I've had to use notations to solve them, and the "very challenging" puzzles usually require me to make notations and I've even gotten hung up on a couple of them.

The book is big enough so that the puzzles can be easily read yet small enough that it will fit in your laptop case. It's also very fairly priced for the number of puzzles you get.

Decent book, but not very hard in the scheme of things

This is an good book, with fairly difficult puzzles. I wouldn't say the puzzles are extremely hard. One problem I have with most Sudoku reviews is that they are not specific about what techniques are and are not required, so I always list all the ones I've found required in the book. This book does not require any advanced techniques:

* Elementary techniques (cross-hatching, single cell, single candidate)
* Locked candidate elimination
* Naked pairs, triples, and quads
* I don't believe I even found a single X-wing, although there might have been some fairly easy non-unique rectangles.

Despite this fact, it gives you a pretty good workout on the basic techniques: sometimes you really have to look for your triples and quads. If you are beyond this book, I recommend the Absolutely Nasty series: Absolutely Nasty Sudoku Level 1 (Mensa) is perhaps a tiny bit harder than this book, and Absolutely Nasty Sudoku Level 2 (Mensa) starts in with the more advanced techniques.

If, on the other hand, you have no idea what X-wings, non-unique rectangles, etc. are, but would like to, I recommend that you pick up Mastering Sudoku Week by Week: 52 Steps to Becoming a Sudoku Wizard immediately. You'll be talking the talk and walking the walk soon enough! The pages of the book are good sized, although they are made of newsprint, so they don't take a lot of erasing. The book's small size make it easy to carry around with you.

Overall, a decent if not super-challenging book of Sudoku that can act as a great stepping-stone on your path toward Sudoku enlightenment.

Hard, yes! But crummy print job.

I wasn't getting any kick from the "medium" level any more, so ordered this one. YES, they are hard! Good puzzles.

The printing, though, is rotten. It's on cheap newsprint-type paper (don't use a felt-tip pen) and with so little margin that it's really awkward trying to write on the left-hand pages. A third of the book is answers, printed just two to a page. What a waste. Who uses them anyway? For the same amount of paper, they could have printed 8 or 15 answers to a page and made more margin on the puzzle pages. But then the book wouldn't have looked so thick - a marketing fooler that fooled ME.

Sinclair Lewis's 1935 novel It Can't Happen Here envisaged a right-wing populist president, advised by a cunning political strategist and backed by a cynical alliance of religious fundamentalists and corporations, who uses security threats to consolidate dictatorial powers, destroy civil liberties and establish folksy fascism. This is a virtual blueprint for the current Bush administration, a "corrupt and authoritarian ruling clique" that accords the president "the prerogatives of a king," argues political columnist Conason (Big Lies) in this lively, if overwrought, j'accuse. He surveys a long list of what he sees as Bush administration affronts to freedom and democracy: military tribunals, torture, warrantless wiretapping, politically motivated terrorism alerts, a war based on fraudulent pretexts, the Abramoff scandals, the handover of policy making to business interests and Christian zealots, tight secrecy coupled with a dissemination of propaganda through the right-wing media and a lawless contempt for constitutional constraints on the presidency. His indictment often hits home, but it's broad and indiscriminate, treating biased journalism, religion-tinged politics and lobbying scandals as signs of creeping fascism rather than age-old commonplaces of democracy. Conason delivers his usual cogent, hard-hitting critique of Republican misdeeds, but his insinuations of authoritarianism, coming just as the Republicans have been voted out of power in Congress, seem badly timed. Although we are not facing full-blown fascism, Conason sees a "gradual and insidious turn toward authoritarian rule" for the first time since the Nixon administration. He explores how and why Lewis' grim and amusing tale resonates today as Americans watch an increasingly secretive Bush administration usurp the power of the legislature and disregard provisions of the Constitution by stoking fear of terrorism. modus operandi of what brought unchecked power to Nazi Germany

Fascist Mussolini once described fascism as simply Big Government & Big Business working hand in hand.

Joe Conason describes Sinclair Lewis's book, "It Can Happen Here", extremely well. In the book the newly elected president with has advisor, seize upon an economic crisis to aggregate more & more power to the White House. The Adminstration proceeds to turn Congress into an advisory board, as they start appointing political hacks to the courts. Acting on the assumption that constitutional procedures are a dangerous hindrance to executive powers, the administration swiftly begins to dismantel them. The U.S. Government begins to conduct business in near total secrecy (controlling or, at best suppressing the media). The country is eventually bankrupted while the wealthy few at the top grow even more wealthy. Any citizen who dares to question the new order is brought before a military trbunal to answer charges of treason. The book ends with the utter suppression of dissent, the complete nixing of the Bill Of Rights, the establishment of labor & dentention camps, and the violent suppression of labor unions & political rivals.

The author gives us pertinent background to Lewis. For instance,Lewis had been married to Dorothy Thompson, who had been expelled from Berlin by the Nazis a year earlier and quickly became America's most outspoken critic of Fascism.

After providing an excellent backdrop to the rise of Hitler's power the author bring us to the present and not so perfect present/future:

Our very corporate style of government, most appropriate to a corporate state, where business executives and government officials can collude & pillage without concern for the troublesome checks and balances of a constitutional democracy. The White House imperative to remove protection for consumers, workers, & soldiers. Deregulate corporate management & subsidize corporate profits. Privitize Public service. Cut corporate and top-bracket taxes. Surrender public assets to private ownership.

A very prescient work. Imperative for a public that should and must understand the message:

The Bush Administration Collides With Orwell's 1984

While I agree with some of the other reviews that state much of this information is available elsewhere, it was nice to find it in a well written book nicely packaged together.

The book begins with a nicely written piece on the Sinclair Lewis book "It Can't Happen Here" and compares the current administration to that in the Lewis book. The author then begins a tour of the cast, which include all the favorites: Bush, Rove, Cheney, Rumsfeld, and dozens of others, many of whom were players in the Nixon and Reagan administrations.

Descriptions are provided of the actions taken by this administration to create a perpetual war, so that the power of the President can become unitary. There is also thoughtful commentary of how the religious right and the corporate right got together behind Bush.

The book is not flattering to most of the participants, and it is scary how close we were to having a theocracy in the United Sates. Although many people have battled to keep this from occurring, it seems as if it was the self destructive work of the current administration that kept us free from that occurrence.

This book is recommended for any thinking American, and should be required reading for every voting American. This book would also be a good background book for those thinking the President should be impeached. The book is well researched, documented and written!

Election year must read!

If you read a lot of newspapers every day, there probably won't be a lot of new information you'll learn in this book. But most of us don't--and even for those who know many of the facts, Conason's compelling story of how our government is being transformed into the opposite of what the American Revolution was fought for is necessary reading as we go into one of the most important elections in our history. Read this book and then consider where the different candidates stand--not on the War, not on stem-cell research--but on the fundamental qualities that made America the greatest nation in the world. Conservatives probably think they're going to hate this book, but conservatives more than anyone need to see how their principles have been hijacked to create the biggest, most intrusive government ever.

If you love The Secret...

If you found The Secret DVD uplifting and euphoria-inducing - but felt it was a little too good to be true - then this book can help you balance your enthusiasm with some practical insights and facts. That doesn't mean stop feeling good! The Secret of the Secret just puts the so-called power of positive thinking in perspective, gives it a historical context, and lets you think for yourself. Very refreshing - and a great companion book to The Secret!

Grounded

Kelly wrote a great piece, well researched, on the success of a booklet/dvd and thought that seems has taken the world by storm. Kelly does not ridicule but takes a tep back to be able to figure out why and how 'the secret' became a hit, as well as what is true and not true about the many claims made by its author and the people Byrne decided to use for her dvd and book. Does quantum physics really hold a key to acquiring wealth? Is that really what the scientists say?
Kelly makes it abolutely clear that sitting down and dreaming of success has never been a proven formula for succes, and also makes a strong point that contentment in life does not necessarily come from eating the fruits of one's labour, but from actually getting out there to search for those fruits; i.e. the journey is more interesting than the goal.
That messsage might not be as popular as the promise of 'instant gratification' through the acquisition of great amounts of matter carried by "the Secret", but definitely more realistic.

Revelealing The Secret

At times the author does seem to lose some objectivity, but it is necessary. "The Secret" by Rhonda Byrne is so choppy and full of simple sound bites that are taken out of context (as many of the people interviewed for the book and DVD have said themselves) that it would seem almost impossible to remain objective.

The author really goes in depth as to the history of the "Law of Attraction". She describes how long it has been around and exactly who, as stated in the book and the DVD, believed in it. This book interviews reputable scientists and others who describe in plain english just what is plausible and what is total fabrication.

The author includes quotes and phrases written by the very people (Einstein, Churchill, Emerson, ect.) who are claimed to be believers of the "Law of Attraction". Read for yourself what they said concerning the universe and the laws of the universe.

If you want to objectively pursue the "Law of Attraction" and get a complete picture, then this book is a must read.

What the media is up to....

There is a statement that is familiar amongst our society, especially those of us that are more liberal, and that is "to not always trust what the media offers as valid or true." This textbook is an attempt to characterize the ways that media manipulate or tangle the truth, and even goes as far as offering an explanation as to why they do it. Now this is where objectivity within a learning text can be lost because to offer opinion about why the media does such things is treacherously difficult to do without biasing a left or right view. Yet the book does offer many illuminating details about the workings of this incredibly powerful economic and political tool, and more importantly, it offers the reader tools for combating or deciphering the clouded messages it gives.

I believe that this is a book that must be read by every human being (not to mention our pets who more and more become economic targets) so as to arm himself or herself against the incessant onslaught of "buy me! Buy me!" and "I can make you better because God knows you weren't made right!" However, the book loses power in being a textbook because some fluidity is lost, and it can be at times rather bland.

Nonetheless, it is a great tool to have and a tool that has now more recently become important to the human in his newest, superficial society.

Good News - Bad News

A synopsis of this novel's plot and action has been covered in many of the reviews to date, so I won't bore readers with a repeat of those details. Rather I would like to address the many fans of Louis Penny's Three Pines series. This is the fifth book in the series and I, like so many other readers, devoured the first four with gusto, falling in love with Three Pines and it's wonderful, albeit quirky, residents. Thus it was good news to have a fifth book in the continuing series (the sixth book is to be released this Fall), but, unfortunately, I found bad news in the actual reading. That's not to say that the writing wasn't great, as Penny's writing is always smooth and satisfying, but Penny seems to have turned upon her creations. After spending four books creating a village in which readers wanted to live and wonderful characters who readers wanted to spend time with, Penny, like Saturn devouring his children, ripped open the ugly side of some of her characters. I found myself aghast with horror and emotional distaste at the thoughts and actions of characters that I had come to love through her first four books. I won't spoil it for those of you who have not yet read this book by giving specific details, but, if you are like me, you'll find your emotions in a state of flux as you come to hate characters that you had previously really liked. Penny may have been trying to achieve a more realistic picture of what small villages and people are truly like, but, if I had wanted that kind of realism, I would have picked up a non-fiction book. Instead of eagerly awaiting the next book in the series (as I did with each of the first four), I now find myself wondering if I even want to bother reading about these nasty, jealous, greedy, criminal characters again. Additionally, the denouement of The Brutal Telling is less than satisfactory, leaving numerous loose ends untied or simply unaddressed at all. This is not Penny's best work, instead it goes a long way towards tearing down all that she had spent four books building up.

Everything has to change, even the village of Three Pines

The village of Three Pines in Quebec, close to the Vermont border, often seems lost in time. Even with an occasional murder investigated by Inspector Armand Gamache and his team from the Quebec Surete in Montreal, the basic fabric of life remains intact.

The bistro, with its wonderful food, is the center of communal life. The used bookstore is filled with good books, advice, and the large presence of its owner, former psychologist Myrna Landers. The artists Peter and Clara Morrow continue to produce wonderful art, and Clara is anticipating her first major show. The eccentric and often vulgar poet Ruth Zardo maintains her policy of offending everyone while she dresses her duck Rosa in sweaters and coats.

Yes, murders happen, but the fabric of life in Three Pines continues.

But not this time. Not in the fifth of the Inspector Gamache mystery novels by Canadian writer Louise Penny, “The Brutal Telling.” This time, the world of Three Pines will be upended.

A body is found early one morning in the bistro. It appears to be an elderly man who’s had his head bashed in. But there’s no blood, indicating the man was killed elsewhere.

What the reader knows from the beginning is that Olivier Brule, the owner of the bistro, knows the murdered man’s identity, and has been visiting him at the man’s cabin deep in the nearby woods.

The mystery of the man’s identity is compounded when the cabin is eventually discovered. Inside the cabin are priceless antiques, signed first editions of books, artifacts that went missing during World War II, and other treasures. Among all of these are small, exquisitely carved pieces of redwood, found only in British Columbia.

Solving this mystery will indeed change Three Pines and the lives of the people who live there.

“The Brutal Telling” is the fifth mystery in Penny’s Inspector Gamache series. The amazing thing is that, despite many of the same characters and same setting, each story is new, fresh, and different. And so far in the series, the stories are becoming better, more nuanced, and deeper. This story at times threatens to break out from the mystery genre and become serious literary fiction.

Now I can’t wait to read the next in the series.

The Brutal Telling

Inspector Gamache is drawn into another murder in a small semi-isolated town that seems to have many murders of tourists and newcomers and an isolated hermit. Fear, greed, hatred, prejudice against newcomers abound as do concern, love, caring, giving, worry for others whom the unknown murderer might target. Inspector Gamache is certain that the person arrested is not guilty of the crime and is removed from the case with his weapon and badge turned in. He returns as a tourist and continues to work on the case with his team and the townspeople until it is solved. The title is part of the solution.
