Authentic Patriotism: Restoring America's Founding Ideals Through Selfless Action, by Stephen P. Kiernan

A provocative, inspiring account of our neglected American ideals and the people who are living them today—and restoring our nation’s dream

Patriotism has become a loaded word: one that is wielded against people with whom we might disagree, or whose cultural origins don’t match our own.

But our founding fathers—Washington, Jefferson, Adams, and others—saw patriotism as a dynamic force: an act of service, in an evolving nation that defined its purpose by offering all people a better way of life.

In Authentic Patriotism, author and award-winning journalist Stephen P. Kiernan explores the original ideals that have been lost in our current climate, where war and economic turmoil have eroded our sense of civic obligation. Kiernan describes “a nation adrift,” out of touch with its origins—and then introduces a range of inspiring people who have revived our national purpose by taking action:

• The out-of-work college graduate who led an economic and environmental renewal of her blighted home community.

• The retired executive who pioneered a revolutionary concept in health care for people without insurance.

• The minister who created a legendary choir, with the goal of uniting children of different races, genders, and classes in one voice.

• The family who donated their daughter’s heart, so that another might live.

These and other “New Americans” are profiled in a book that offers hope, ideas, examples, and practical resources for readers who want to renew the American spirit.

From Publishers Weekly
Kiernan (Last Rights) urges Americans to take on the challenges facing our society in this heartfelt look at everyday heroes who are reshaping society. Patriotism, Kiernan argues, transcends empty flag waving and political posturing, and lies instead in our service to each other and our willingness to sacrifice for the sake of our country and its people. For the author, authentic patriotism is found in the actions of people who take on our most profound social problems—problems the free market ignores in the absence of a clear profit to be had, and that our government has grown too slow moving and detached to effectively address. For example, retired pharmaceutical researcher Jack McConnell saw thousands of people in his community struggling without adequate health care and launched a free clinic that has grown into the Volunteers in Medicine program with 78 clinics in 24 states. Attorney Barry Scheck could not bear the injustice of innocent people languishing in prisons and founded the Innocence Project; today, hundreds of innocent prisoners have been exonerated. With these and other examples, the author constructs a stirring argument against apathy and for engagement. (May)

Review
 "A good-hearted and hardheaded appeal."--Kirkus Reviews

"From retiree Jack McConnell in South Carolina to Majora Carter in the South Bronx, Americans who brought real change to their communities have maintained a great nation while our institutions failed us. Authentic Patriotism is the story of those people whom you have never heard of, but who are most responsible for the greatness of America." --Howard Dean

“Authentic Patriotism is poignant, powerful, and deeply inspiring. It reminded me of something we all tend to forget in the maelstrom of partisan politics and corporate bureaucracies: A single, ordinary person still can make a difference – and single, ordinary people are doing precisely that every day. This is an absolutely terrific book.”--Chris Bohjalian, author of Midwives, The Double Bind, and Secrets of Eden

America Needs Authentic Patriotism
By Calandra Cruickshank
"In the long history of the world, only a few generations have been granted the role of defending freedom in its hour of maximum danger. I do not shank from this responsibility - I welcome it. I do not believe that any of us would exchange places with any other people or any other generation. The energy, the faith, the devotion which we bring to this endeavour will light our country and all who serve it -- and the glow from that fire can truly light the world.

And so, my fellow Americans: ask not what your country can do for you - ask what you can do for your country."
-JFK, 1961

Like the great orators of the past, author Stephen Kiernan rekindles our passion for the America our forefathers intended, and provides the inspiration that we need to remember that each of us has the power to make a difference. This is a book that each and every American should read, and take to heart. It transcends all boundaries of race or creed, and encourages each of us to find the commonality that connects us to America's magnificent history and the shining possibilities of our collective future. It encourages each of us to take responsibility for the state of our country and actively participate in its future, whether in large leadership roles that make great strides, or in small but meaningful ways that simply create a ripple effect or support the bigger work of others, without which very little of importance can succeed. Definitely a must read for your own enjoyment and inspiration, and a wonderful gift for everyone you care about!

Authentic Patriotism
By Liza
I am thoroughly enjoying this book. I highly recommend it as a gift for anyone who wants to pass on some inspiration to others. The stories are uplifting and inspiring. It is one of those books that we all should read when we get caught up in our petty issues. The people that Stephen writes about got outside of themselves and made a difference for so many others. They are the examples of what makes us proud to be American. The stories encourage us to dream big. They remind us to stop expecting the government to solve all of our society's troubles. I wish the people who run the political machinery and the media would read this and understand that we don't need the back stabbing of politics but would much prefer inspiration to make lemonade out of lemons.

Stephen Kiernan MUST be read
By Roberta Macdonald
Much like his earlier work, Last Rights, Kiernan takes an enormous subject through discplined, non-partisan, newshound filters and illucidates solutions so scuccintly that you can't help but be awed and grateful he bothered. His premise should give the Doomsday 2012 Survivalists time to return their 'one-year-family-of-four food' stock pile kits.

Pretty good for the price
By Sewanista
I've got to admit, I only bought this one for the patterns. I don't use sewing instructions, so I haven't even read the book, but I've given the patterns quite a workout. You type in your measurements and the program caculates a pattern which you then print onto lots of sheets of paper (handy hint, shift the pieces around before printing to reduce the page count) and stick together. It's fiddly, but a lot less so than trying to alter a standard sized pattern. I bought this to try out the drafting software with a view to purchasing the full package from Patternmaker, who produced it. I am a patternmaker by trade, but I like the design part, not the drafting from scratch part, so a custom fit basic will save me so much time. I am now teaching hobby sewers, so I've tested the fit on a variety of people, and can see that, with a little care, these patterns will work fairly nicely. The closer to average posture the better, it would seem - the draft relies heavily on the front/back balance being a certain proportion, so women with a pronounced stoop or very upright posture may find it spits out a weird looking pattern that doesn't sit right, and you really need some pattern experience to see how to fix it. I have a slightly forward neck, so it interpreted my back length as all height and made a slightly longwaisted pattern that still needed extra length up to the back neck. One of my students has very rounded shoulders, and a short front, so that didn't work at all, another has a very large bust, and the chest width ended up far too wide. Fixable, but fiddly, and if you didn't know what you were looking at I can see that it would be too frustrating to continue.

I like the range of patterns included. The styles are all quite basic, but as a patternmaker, I don't look at detail, I look at silhouettes, and I felt the styles included could be the starting point for a complete wardrobe. With only a little pattern design knowledge, you could get a huge range of well fitting patterns.

There is quite a lot of information regarding the system available at [...] and I understand there is a user group also. The pattern system used to develop the program is fully described, with hand drafting instructions. Worth a visit.

My only gripe would be the silly errors. I can't say if there were any typos in the book, because I haven't read it, but the style sketches don't always match the pattern diagram properly, and I find that kind of thing annoying. One of the patterns also seemed to draft up oddly, but I haven't had time to recheck it. I may have typed in a wrong number. You can't save measurements, although you can print out a set you've entered, so each time you have to re-enter the measurements.

All in all, I'm very happy. It's a versatile addition to my pattern reportoire, and it's fun to use. I don't even mind taping the pages together :-) I think that if you have average posture, this pattern will accommodate girth and length variations reasonably well, but if you find you have to always make lots of alterations to store bought patterns, this may not be the easy fix you'd expect.

POSH, by Lucy Jackson

Inside Manhattan's private school world of fast-paced over-the-top entitlement and superficial gloss lurk many secrets―the secrets of emotionally charged teenage and adult lives. In this eloquent novel set during one class's senior year at the Griffin School, among the queen bees and the wannabes, Michael Avery and Julianne Coopersmith begin a relationship. Their backgrounds are so different―he's beyond privileged and rich, her mother is a writer who drives a cab―but it's the rich boy who ends up being the needy one, with an emotional hole they both believe only Julianne can fill. Their parents are not immune from internal torture either―Michael's mother finds it easier to love her Chinese Crested Hairless than her own child, and Julianne's mother's protective instincts have unexpected consequences.

Fast-paced, gently satirical, yet deeply felt, Posh is a poignant and knowing novel.

From Publishers Weekly
The pseudonymous Jackson (an "acclaimed short story writer and novelist") plumbs the lives of those who pace the halls at New York City's exclusive Griffin School in this accomplished novel. Varied in age and income bracket, the cast is finely drawn if familiar: Julianne Coopersmith, a middle-class teen with an overprotective mother, attends Griffin on scholarship; Morgan Goldfine, Julianne's best friend whose mother recently died, is awash in grief; Michael Avery, Julianne's boy wonder boyfriend, is Harvard bound; and Kathryn "Lazy" Hoffman, Griffin's headmistress, is having a professionally verboten affair with a teacher. Cracks form in Julianne and Michael's relationship after Michael shows signs of mental instability, though Julianne's loathe to give up on him, even when his symptoms hint at violent tendencies. Morgan mopes her way through the school year, and Julianne's mother strikes up an unlikely friendship with Michael's mother. Kathryn's affair, predictably, becomes public knowledge, sparking domestic and professional upheaval. If the plot packs few surprises, Jackson's rendering of relationships—both toxic and positive, filial and friendly—is flawlessly executed as she flits from social strata to social strata. The similarity in cover art between this novel and Prep isn't for nothing. (Jan.)

From School Library Journal
Adult/High School—This novel about the members of an elite school community is told from multiple viewpoints. "Lazy" Hoffman, headmistress at the prestigious Griffin School in New York City, is having an affair with one of the teachers, despite the fact that she has a prince of a husband. Julianne is a scholarship student whose mother, Dee, is a former novelist who now drives a cab. Julianne's boyfriend, Michael, is the perfect Griffin student-brilliant and Harvard-bound-but also a victim of bipolar disorder. Michael's mother, Susan, seems to care more about her dog than her son. And Julianne's best friend, Morgan, has just lost her mother to cancer. The school year progresses, and each of these situations develops, the most painful of which is the relationship between Julianne and Michael. She feels that she is the only one who understands him, and that she must not, under any circumstances, let him down. The relationship is doomed to end tragically, and it does. There are not any major surprises here, but the book is well written, and the characters are appealing. Some of the themes (and even the title and cover art) are reminiscent of Curtis Sittenfeld's Prep (Random, 2005). Like that book, this novel presents more of an adult than a teen view of high school life, but it will nevertheless appeal to teens, with its strong rendering of the major relationships and its fast pace, aided by lots of dialogue and a smattering of e-mail exchanges.—Sarah Flowers, Santa Clara County Library, CA

From Booklist
Like Christina Schwartz'sAll Is Vanity (2002) and Curtis Sittenfeld's Prep (2005), this novel, written under a pseudonym by a well-established fiction writer, centers on a ritzy Manhattan private school. The plot is crowded with characters. Kathryn "Lazy" Hoffman, headmistress at Griffin School, relieves job stress through adultery; teens Julianne and Michael are in love, despite brilliant, mentally ill Michael's abuse; Dee, Julianne's divorced mother, drives a cab to support her writing career; Susan, Michael's mother, seems more comfortable loving her dog than her husband or child. There are too many plotlines that never develop into a cohesive whole. Also distancing is the narrative's shifting, satirical tone, which celebrates stereotypes and asks readers to alternately mock and then sympathize with the characters. Still, readers may delight in the author's acutely observed details from the lives of Manhattan elites (and those who share their world), and there are some poignant messages about ambition, love, class, and marriage--what holds it together and what sends it "circling the drain." Really hard to finish
By Shelley Shelley
Though it's not the worst book I've ever read, it is certainly the worst I've read in several years. I could hardly make myself finish it, but soldiered on in hopes that it would get better. The writing style is stale and unoriginal, and the characters are pathetic. By the middle of the book, I realized that I didn't care what happened to any of them. The characters all seem like pitiful stereotypes with no redeeming and/or original qualities, while the description of the private school is laughable. The most ridiculous character of all is the student who is an Arab prince and robs fellow students at gunpoint for no apparent reason! Save your time and money and give this book a miss!

fast, yet incredibly moving read
By flight attendant and avid reader
I finished Posh a few weeks ago but find myself still thinking about the characters in this novel. This book follows the story of various students, parents and the headmistress of an elite private school in Manhattan. I initially thought this would be a fun piece of fluff, but the issues of death and mental illness explored in this story quickly disavowed me of that notion! It took me a little while to get used to one of the main characters being known as "Lazy", but once I did, I devoured this book and would love to know what other books Lucy Jackson (a pseudonym) has written.

Stinging Satire, Laced with Poignancy
By Allen James
In a market dominated by tastefully restrained (read: boring) fiction on the one hand, sensationalist trash on the other, can a desperate reader object to the arrival of a novel that combines the best of two worlds? "Posh" is a keen depiction of life behind the lofty doors of Griffin, an elite Upper East Side prep school where all human transactions begin at six figures. The book is a true find: a juicy story that is at once artfully, wisely, magnificently crafted.

The miracle of Lucy Jackson's achievement here is that she takes all the elements of a down and dirty soap opera--the petty gossips, back-stabbing colleagues, sexual predators, manically driven parents--and filters them through the sensibilities of a finished artist with the most exquisite eye for detail. ("Let those bitter tears of hers flow onto that expensive sport jacket as he seals her in his loving, adulterous embrace." Could Curtis Sittenfeld have composed that killer sentence?)

Even the least genial of Jackson's characters---a headmistress driven by lust, power, and the need to placate the vanities of all but the members of the custodial staff; a brilliant but abusive senior whose acceptance to Harvard doesn't quite quell the voices of madness gnawing away at his insides---are rendered sympathetic through the power of the author's compassion for her characters.

But it's the story at the center of this book, the relationship between Dee and her daughter Julianne, that keeps us anchored until we reach the last page. They are the 'strangers in a strange land' at Griffin, fighting to arrive at someplace real, and their struggle to find mutual love and respect is so poignant that we respond to them as we would members of our own family.

Like a very small handful of satires that dazzle us with brilliance, wit, and humor, the unique surprise here is to find that, by story's end, we've come to view these people as anything but cartoon figures, to realize that their lives have touched us profoundly.

I'm a tough guy, and on page 241 I was crying. Real tears.

'...a unique achievement in its genre: a masterly synthesis of a huge mass of material. It deals with the political, military, social and cultural aspects of Roman civilisation, extending over a millennium.' - KLEIO '...we must indeed be grateful for what we have been given, which is immense. It is not often that a new edition of an old book can be hailed as a major event but this is the exception.' - Times Literary Supplement 'Almost nothing has escaped Scullard's attention, including some extremely recent items...it will be an ideal work of reference for students.' - Times Higher Education Supplement

Cary's incisiveness fills niche between Mommsen and Gibbon
By A Customer
I have the 2nd Edition of this 1935 book. Having read and re-read this and Gibbon and Mommsen, it suddenly struck me that Cary offers a more succinct and incisive interpretation of the MEANING of each epoch in Roman history. He also disagrees markedly from others on the value/meaning of 'controversial' emperors (Nero, Domitian, Diocletian) which is very refreshing and well-stated. Frankly, if you want to get a good sense of the meaning of the History of Rome, read Cary first; then Mommsen, then Gibbon. Then, back to Cary. I wish this book were still in print. Don't let it go unread, if you are a Romanophile...

The Standard on the Subject
By J. A Magill
This extremely dense text is still head and shoulders above other contenders as the standard history of the rise and history of the roman empire. The authors thesis, that Rome never truly fell but evolved into the catholic church/feudal state is well defended with ample evidence.
What makes this book so extraordinary is the depth and breath of the subject matter covered. Military history, politics, technology, art, science, social development, trade, are all given ample coverage. While it can be quite dry, the reader is free to skip around reading only the subjects of interest. For the scholar or the curious, this is a must own text that will serve as a crucial guide and reference.

incredible
By dukefan
This book was so useful. I can not tell you how good this book was. I read this book and in the NJCL certamen I helped take our team to a third place showing. This book's only fallacy is that it ignores the last years of Rome and cuts off at the death of Constantine in A.D. 331. Bottomline though This book is the best Roman history book available

Low Road: The Life and Legacy of Donald Goines, by Eddie B. Allen

Donald Goines was a pimp, truck driver, heroin addict, factory worker, and career criminal. He was also one of the most popular Black contemporary writers having published sixteen novels, including Whoreson, Dopefiend, and Daddy Cool. Goines's unique brand of "street narrative" and "ghetto realism" mark him as the original street writer. Now, in the first in-depth biography of Goines's life, author Eddie B. Allen, Jr. explores exactly how one man made the transition from street hustler to bestselling author. With exclusive access to personal letters, treatments from unwritten books, photographs, and family members, Allen uncovers Goines's experiences with drugs, prostitutes, prison, and urban violence. Fans of Goines's novels will note a dramatic parallelism between his life and fictional tales.

From Publishers Weekly
It is indicative of both the explosive nature of Goines's subject matter (his works include Whoreson; Dopefiend and Black Gangster) and the timidity of the academy that Goines's achievement—selling more than five million books of utterly uncompromised fiction—has received little scholarly attention. Critic Allen's thorough and well-documented study will do much to change that, placing Goines's life and work in a coherent critical, historical and social frame. This book is clearly a labor of love, all the more creditable because Goines is often hard to like. A hustler, pimp and junkie who rejected his hard-working father's middle-class ethos, Goines hardly stood out from any number of doomed young men until, during a prison term, the spreading fame of Iceberg Slim reached him. The old story of redemption by art is vividly retold here, and the sense of Goines's growing awareness and ambition is well caught, as are the exigencies of paperback publication. Tragically, Goines could leave neither his addiction nor his violent past behind, and he was murdered—a case that remains unsolved—at the age of 35, in 1947. This work argues not only for a serious assessment of what Goines did achieve, but makes us mourn what he never got the chance to. Photos.

From Booklist
Before there was urban fiction there was Donald Goines. Allen examines the life of Goines, a pimp and hustler who, inspired by urban writer Ice Berg Slim, wrote about the life he lived, a life that may have contributed to his violent and untimely death. Goines, born the only son in a middle-class black family in Detroit, became a writer and chronicler of the gritty side of urban life. Goines cranked out Dopefiend (1971), Whoreson (1972), and 13 other titles while fighting heroin addiction and coping with the limited prospects for a drug-addicted black man in 1960s America. On the basis of interviews with Goines' family and friends, and correspondence left by the author, Allen offers a portrait of a tortured man who suffered a color complex because of his fair skin, a longing to get beyond the restrictions of race, the pull of a life of crime and violence, and a strangling drug addiction that both inspired and destroyed him. Readers interested in the genesis of urban fiction and hip-hop influences will appreciate this look at an early pioneer. Vanessa Bush

Review

“[A] comprehensive look at the gritty novelist's own thug life, (Low Road) unfolds like a fast-paced thriller that mirrors Goines's popular bestsellers.” ―Essence magazine

“In an in-depth biography of the original street-fiction author, Donald Goines, Allen examines the life of the late author who influenced all your favorite rappers.” ―The Source

“Allen illuminates the life and writings of arguably the most influential chronicler of black urban life in the post-World War II era. Goines' legacy is maintained by a hip-hop generation that is just as invisible and ignored. Eddie B. Allen J...thankfully brings that legacy into even sharper focus.” ―AOL BlackVoices

“For readers who are looking for the definitive story of Donald Goines's life, a wonderful addition to their bookshelves about black popular culture and its icons, and simply, a great read, this is the book.” ―Black Issues Book Review

Drifted off to much in other directions
By Sham
Eddie Allen, I feel is a great writer, but here the story gets lost as he drifts off into subject matters that had nothing to do with Goines himself. Maybe he should write a book on African-American history, but I feel he should've stuck to the subject itself. For the reader who doesn't know that much about Goines, it will give you an insight into the fact that he didn't make much money as a writer and the books he wrote didn't take much imagination.

Tortured Genius
By soulonice
Tortured Genius. To me, that's what this cat was. Eddie Allen Jr's book revealed more about the man and the events of his time as well as any other biography about another public figure. Surprisingly, or maybe not to some, Goines grew up in a stable household in which his father owned and operated his own business with the help of his supportive wife. There is no mention of drug use by his parents or other siblings while he grew up. It makes his story even more complicated, and makes people wonder as to why he chose the route he took. Allen takes us back to the turbulent times of the early 20th century and the events that took place, not only in the city of Detroit, but the country as a whole. He drew some interesting parallels, including one that links Goines' father and Joe Louis as buddies during Lewis' reign as champion of the world. That one aspect of Allen's work re-affirmed to me it is a small world indeed. Allen continues as he tells readers about Goines becoming a pimp, bootlegger, and later, being arrested and locked behind bars. He also tells plenty about Goines' increasingly dangerous habit of heroin, which he even displays to his younger sister, all the while, warning her if he ever caught her doing what he was showing her, he would kill her. It was a frightening and hypocritical display, but nonetheless, it most likely proved effective. Allen goes on to tell about Goines picking up the works of Iceberg Slim, and forming his own stories using Slim's as a blueprint, so to speak. Throughout the book, Allen provides plenty of documentation and other sources to prove this is indeed a work of authenticity, including a piece Goines wrote one year before his death entitled, "Private Thoughts on a Lonely Sunday, September 1, 1973." Allen also lets us know about Goines' inner struggle with his addiction, and how desperately he wanted to "kick" the habit out of his life. In the end, his struggles and other wrongdoings in the past came back to haunt him. Allen did a terrific job in not turning this into a sob story. Donald Goines was no saint, but he is admired by many, such as myself, for telling his own stories, his own life, using his imagination, and telling stories from the heart in the most vivid, brutal, harsh, but also heart-felt fashion.

You Can't Run from the Past
By The RAWSISTAZ Reviewers
Daddy Cool, Black Girl Lost, Dopefiend -- these and the numerous other works published by Donald Goines brought the streets to the pages of a book. Goines was most qualified to write about the themes he covered in his books because much of what he wrote about, he lived. LOW ROAD covers most of his short life, beginning with his childhood, highlighting his family life as well as his less than stellar academic career. Next his decision to join the military and his military life is discussed. Goines' military experiences are a critical turning point in his life because it is while enlisted that Goines develops the drug addiction that would haunt him for the rest of his life. After leaving the military, he returns home with no job prospects and an addiction to support; it is then that he really commits to hustling and quickly gets caught up in life on the streets.

As a result of his criminal activity, he eventually finds himself incarcerated, during which time he is exposed to the works of Iceberg Slim and is inspired to write. Upon his release, Goines was able to secure a series of book deals and was able to achieve a certain degree of success as a writer. In spite of this, his personal demons continued to have a strong hold and his personal life remained one of frustration, poverty and addiction. The murders of Goines and his girlfriend remain unsolved to this day, and while there are many theories as to what killed him, most believe the murder was simply his past catching up with him.

The author obviously spent a great deal of time and research and the result is a well balanced look at Goines. Readers will better understand the factors which ultimately led to his self-destructive lifestyle while seeing first hand how success is not always enough to overcome a drug addiction. Goines' murder resulted in the loss of a talented writer who had the unique ability to bring the grit and realism of the streets to life in an engaging and gripping story. The fact that his murder remains unsolved and that Goines died virtually penniless and still addicted to heroin adds to the bitter irony of his life.

There were times when I felt the book had a bit too much fluff, with the author spending too much time discussing the times rather than Goines himself, I still felt the book was informative and an enjoyable read. If you are a fan of the writings of Donald Goines or have ever wondered about the man behind the books, then LOW ROAD is a necessary and worthy addition to your reading library. (RAW Rating: 3.5)

Something For Everyone
By Donna Littlewood
I first encountered Annika through her blog "Annika's Atelier" right after I started my own blog on micro macrame. She makes all kinds of beautiful things (not just micro macrame). We corresponded a bit back and forth over the next couple of years, checking into each other's blogs upon occasion. I found her to be a delightful and talented woman.

Recently, she contacted me to review her new book. I accepted right away and she sent me an advance copy.

At first glance, I fell in love. What a lovely book with 30 projects in varying degrees of difficulty and a wide variety of projects - from bracelets to ornaments, from victorian to deco - Something for everyone!

Then, this past weekend, I had a chance to delve deeper. You know, try one of the projects to see how the instructions worked out. (And, yes, I could not wait to make one of her designs for my own personal use!)

I made the "Stained Glass Bracelet" without too much trouble.

I had one question which she answered right away and said that anyone buying her book could contact her through her website[...] or her blog [...] and she would be happy to answer any questions.

I really cannot say enough about this book. It has beautiful photos, is well written and would provide anyone (beginner or expert) with plenty of projects and inspiration for quite some time...and isn't that really what it is all about?

EYE CANDY!!! ...and doable!
By jomamatoo
Being a latent "flower child" and (sad to admit) macramé junkie from yester-year...I was intrigued to see a book on the latest spin in the ancient art of knot tying. The cover is gorgeous though and sucks you into the 30 projects that have fun intros, enticing names and detailed photos. Yes, the "Stained Glass Bracelet" is as fabulous as it sounds but doesn't look too daunting to construct. Then there's the "Dark Side of the Moon Necklace" which is really made from a couple simple knots but in such an elegant mix with beads that you could find yourself wiping one up in a weekend. Which in fact, is what I did the with the "Baroque Bracelet" (pgs. 84-89) and the "Ojime Necklace" (pgs. 26-29). There are also watchbands that I'm dying to try on some old timepieces I have laying around, and the book has been a terrific resource for finding out how to mount beautiful cabochons and cameos in something other than metal. This puts a new lease on life to those intricate buttons and broken jewelry pieces that need a new setting. I was pleased to find the instructions and photos were easy to follow and I've now added this wonderful knowledge to my repertoire of crafty-handy skills for making great jewelry without breaking the bank.

Which is another thing I liked about this book - all the supplies are listed with directions for not only the individual projects, but how do to the knots and get started on this easy, compact way to continue what used to be a bulky, cumbersome hobby. These jewelry projects are all ones that could be taken "on the go." Believe it! These eye-candy proto-types can ALL be managed ON YOUR LAP with a padded clipboard (directions to make your own for a couple bucks are included in the book) AND without having to bring along rolls of the wire and various paraphernalia that creating wire/bead/crimping type jewelry requires.

These projects let me put a small clipboard and Ziploc bag of stuff into my computer bag with my laptop and do these on the go - because unlike crochet, knitting or wire stringing projects - these can be stopped and put on hold with each knot!!! How's that for being able to create "bling" and fantastic gifts on the fly or with a busy lifestyle?

Way to go Annika deGroot for giving me back my one of my favorite teen hobbies...now if you could just help me find my rose-colored sunglasses, string some beads into my hair and braid it or fit into my old hip-huggers with the WIDE flare legs! ;o)
