From School Library Journal
Starred Review. Grade 8 Up–Klass enters exciting and provocative new territory with this sci-fi thriller. Seventeen-year-old Jack Danielsons life has always been normal–except that his parents have encouraged him to blend in and not try too hard. But then he learns that he is different, that he has special powers and abilities, and that he is from the future and has been sent back to save the planet. Strangers kill his adoptive parents and come after him, and the teens only hope to survive is to trust in Gisco, a huge dog who speaks to him telepathically, and Eko, a ninja babe whose loyalties are ambiguous. The writing is fluid and graceful in places. The sobering events and tone are leavened with engaging humor, and the characters are multidimensional. The relentless pace, coupled with issues of ecology, time travel, self-identity, and sexual awakening, makes for a thrilling and memorable read. The cliff-hanger ending will make readers hope that Klasss work on book two of the trilogy is well under way.–Melissa Moore, Union University Library, Jackson, TN

From Booklist
Jack's parents have taught him to blend in, and he resents it. He knows he can be a star--which he becomes when he shatters his school's rushing record and appears on the news. Then his parents tell him they aren't really his parents, and Jack suddenly finds himself catapulted from being on top of the world to running for his life and being the only one equipped to avert ecological disaster. In the first volume in this eco-fantasy series, Klass avoids preaching while still conveying how easily ignorance can cause environmental atrocities; a scene in which Jack helps trawl for orange roughy is downright chilling. The nonstop run of fragmentary sentences is effective in action scenes; it's distracting everywhere else, however, so it's fortunate that the book is packed with high-intensity thrills. Style matters aside, Klass' protagonist comes off as a regular guy, right down to his awkward sexual impulses, and Jack's surprising fate will leave readers waiting eagerly for the second installment in the Caretaker Trilogy^B. Great message, fantasy and sci-fi.
By Landy Hilger
The message in the book is great. This book is just for stereotypical teenage boys who are usually athletic, popular or lucky with the girls. I personally did not like the way it's written; the sentences are short and they seem choppy to me. I believe it is meant to portray how quick things escalated from the beginning. Overall, many people like it because it does have an environmental literacy component.

Firestorm may not be appropriate for middle school.
By A. Roth
Just a "heads-up" for middle school folks who select books. The main character is in a car with his girlfriend & tries to convince her that "this is the night." The girlfriend says "you want me to spread my legs like football goalposts? Is that it?" "Put it away. Back in your pants." "Put that sucker away and let's go home. There'll be lots of better times. I promise. Soon." "Have you every heard of blue balls? It's a medical condition. Can be terminal."

This is a great story! Consider it for high school kids. But if you live in a community that is a bit conservative, Firestorm is best selected for the high school level.

It's always interesting to read the blurbs on the front of a book. You know the ones I mean; the recommendations from fellow authors about why you should pick up a copy of the book in question. What's even more interesting is when the blurb comes from someone other than an author. In the case of FIRESTORM, the first in The Caretaker Trilogy by author David Klass, the recommendation comes from Greenpeace. Yes, the same Greenpeace International that is dedicated to protecting and saving the Earth from the harmful practices that threaten to destroy it. If that isn't enough to get your attention, then maybe you should turn your ear towards Jack Danielson, the hero of FIRESTORM:

"Name's Jack Danielson. Eighteen. As of right now, not quite sure I'll live to see nineteen. Always been a pretty good guy, easy-going, laid back, friend to all and enemy to none. Smart, but not too smart. Athletically inclined, but never enough to be the best. Now my whole world is falling apart. Seems my father isn't my father. My mother isn't my mother. The fact that my dad who isn't my dad shot off his own foot to prove his point should be strange enough. It isn't. There are weird bat-like creatures chasing me, and things called Gorms. I've somehow ended up on a motorcycle with a humongous mongrel dog named Gisco, who happens to be telepathic, riding in a sidecar. Now there's a woman named Eko kicking my a** on a daily basis to make me stronger. Why? Because I have to find Firestorm so that I can save the Earth. And no, I have no idea what that is. And yes, I'm a fan of sentence fragments. Look it up, my friend, but not right now. Right now I have to

save the world, before there's no future on Earth for me to come back from."

FIRESTORM is Jack's story, but it's also the story of what could very well happen. It's a fantasy that could be truth, if the destruction of Earth by mankind continues on its current course. After reading this wonderful book, I clearly understand why it's endorsed by Greenpeace. One of the best things of the book, besides its underlying message of taking care of the planet, is Gisco, the telepathic dog. He adds an element of humor, such as his devotion to the O Great Dog God, that lightens up a story that could come across as preachy, but never does. It's very hard to categorize FIRESTORM into one category, but if I had to I would call it a coming-of-age, contemporary fantasy, science-fiction, paranormal adventure story.

If that doesn't catch your attention, I don't know what will. Let me just say that once you start reading, you won't be able to stop. And when you're finished, you'll want to read more. FIRESTORM is, luckily, the first book in The Caretaker Trilogy, so maybe if we hound Mr. Klass night and day he'll give us what we want--and sooner rather than later.

Excellent Guide to Filet Crochet
By Jean Leinhauser
Everything you've ever wanted to know about filet crochet is attractively presented in this handy size book, which has a hidden spiral binding. It has the best descriptions I've ever seen on shaping, and makes it easy to learn how to work from charts. It has a great visual presentation of all the techniques, from beginner to advanced, as well as some design collections. Includes designs for small and medium motifs, all-over patterns, even borders. A section on planning a design is quite helpful. A great book to pick up when you're bored and can't think what to crochet next. Take a look here, and you'll be inspired.

great tool
By JoAnna Calton-Coyle
This is a great book to add to your collection of crochet designs and stitches. It can be used to design curtains for the home as well as beautiful and unusual clothing. I must have for the serious needle artist and every day crochet buff. It will add a new dimension to everything you crochet. It is a simple way of thinking outside of the box. Filet crochet opens a whole new world of things you can do with your hook.

Filet Crochet another method to create pieces that look vintage
By Wendy D. Bowie
I love this book. If you crochet and have not tried filet crochet - give it a whirl. Making pieces with filet crochet goes much more quickly and you can make large pieces in record time. This book contains a multitude of motifs that you can also combine to make anything from doilies to bedspreads. Use a fine crochet thread in a color like Ecru and your work will look like you inherited it from you grandmother, not like you just made it. By combining motifs in this book in different ways and making them into different pieces you will never run out of projects you are dying to make.

George Washington's Teeth, by Deborah Chandra, Madeleine Comora

From battling toothaches while fighting the British, to having rotten teeth removed by his dentists, the Father of His Country suffered all his life with tooth problems. Yet, contrary to popular belief, he never had a set of wooden teeth. Starting at the age of twenty-four, George Washington lost on average a tooth a year, and by the time he was elected president, he had only two left! In this reverentially funny tale written in verse and based on Washington's letters, diaries, and other historical records, readers will find out what really happened as they follow the trail of lost teeth to complete tooflessness.

Illustrated in watercolors with subtle humor by Brock Cole, the main story is followed by a four-page time line featuring reproduced period portraits of Washington.

Amazon.com Review
The creators of George Washington's Teeth unhinge the jaws of history to examine the mouth of America's first president, tracking the poor man's dental woes as he gallops to war, crosses the Delaware, and, with only two teeth left, takes his place as leader of the country. Washington was plagued by black, rotting teeth from the time he was 22, losing about one a year until he was nearly "toofless" and had to have his first dentures made from a hippotamus tusk (that's right, not wood!). Poets Deborah Chandra and Madeleine Comora begin their quirky historical tale at a lively clip: "The Revolutionary War/ George hoped would soon be won,/ But another battle with his teeth/ Had only just begun..." Indeed. Evidently he was losing teeth even as he crossed the Delaware: "George crossed the icy Delaware/ With nine teeth in his mouth./ In that cold and pitchy dark,/ Two more teeth came out!" (Cleverly, illustrator Brock Cole mimics Emanuel Leutze's famous painting "Washington Crossing the Delaware," making Washington seem more uncomfortably tight-lipped than dignified.) The story ends happily ever after with the crafting of a nice new pair of ivory false teeth that allow George to dance around the ballroom through the night. Truth be told, however, he would be deeply troubled by his teeth until the day he died. A four-page, illustrated historic timeline of Washington's life (and mouth) completes this carefully researched, very funny, charmingly illustrated picture book that works to humanize a larger-than-life historical figure and in turn, history itself. Brilliant! (Ages 7 and older) --Karin Snelson

From Publishers Weekly
In a clever approach to history, Chandra and Comora string together spry stanzas describing the dental difficulties that plagued George Washington. Rhyming verse explains how the general's rotten teeth gradually fall out during the Revolutionary War: "George crossed the icy Delaware/ With nine teeth in his mouth./ In that cold and pitchy dark,/ Two more teeth came out!" Cole complements this verse by rendering a sly watercolor twist on Emanuel Leutze's famous painting George Washington Crossing the Delaware, in a full-spread treatment: Washington still stands in quiet dignity, but the boatmen are grinning. By the time Washington is elected president, just two teeth remain in his mouth. Kids will love the details, such as the way Washington uses a pair of his molars to fashion a mold from which the dentist makes a set of dentures (these are carved from hippopotamus ivory, and even shown, in a photograph in the afterword). Infusing his bustling watercolor vignettes with comic hyperbole, Cole easily keeps pace with the lighthearted narrative. One especially funny image shows the president sprawled on the floor, legs in the air, after viewing a newly painted portrait ("George stood up to have a look-/ He fell back on his fanny./ `It doesn't look like me!' he roared./ `It looks like Martha's granny!' "). An annotated timeline at the end includes quotes from the leader's letters and diaries chronicling his relentless efforts to hide his dental problems and the extent to which they caused him chronic pain and embarrassment. A highly palatable historical morsel. All ages.

From Booklist
*Starred Review* K-Gr. 3. Second only to kids' curiosity about George Washington and the cherry tree may be their interest in his teeth. Did the prez wear wooden dentures? Chandra and Comora set the record straight with wit, verve, and a generous amount of sympathy for poor Washington and his dental woes. Unfurling smoothly against a backdrop of Washington's career as soldier and president, the tale goes forward in sprightly, read-aloud rhyme that never falters: "Poor George has two teeth in his mouth / The day the votes came in. / The people had a President /But one afraid to grin." And illustrator Cole is at his absolute best here, totally at ease with human gesture and expression. Each spread is a tableaulike scene (or scenes) filled with costumed characters busily engaged in humorously visualizing the actual history. The color palette and energy of the art harks back to Cole's Buttons (1999), but there's much more detail and movement in these pictures, which work well as amusing preparation for the more sedately illustrated, annotated time line of George's dental decay that precedes a full roundup of historical sources the authors used in telling the tale. This is history for youngsters that will stick; it's wild and fun and factual, without a trace of mockery. Stephanie Zvirin

New Perspective
By ardnam
An interesting new perspective on George Washington. It makes him seem more human to children. Young children are intrigued to have the myth of wooden teeth squelched. Ther book provides a historical timeline in the back. This is a great book for children of ALL ages. Even I, an older child and teacher, learned some things. I had no idea our first president was so obsessed with his teeth and that he had such an active role in the solutions to his dental problems. Highly recommended.

George Washington's teeth were not wooden at all
By Reading Teacher
After reviewing this book for a graduate Children's Literature course, we were surprised to see how much George Washington's teeth played a role in his day to day life. It was a comical rhyming story that would be appropriate for elementary students. As Kindergarten and First Grade teachers we would incorporate its theme into teaching dental health. Young children are often very excited about losing their baby teeth, however, this book would convince them to take very good care of their grown up teeth. The book could also be used in upper elementary classes to discuss myths, like George Washington's wooden teeth!

Everything young kids will want to know about George's teeth
By Lawrance Bernabo
There are lots of ways of chronicling the change in the national temperament, and one of them is that when I was a kid it was the story of George Washington chopping down the cherry tree that was what stood out. However, the inquiring minds of the nation's youth today are now going to be more intrigued by the legend the first President had wooden teeth, which is precisely how Deborah Chandra and Madeleine Comora, aided and abetted by Brock Cole's pictures, manages to teach young readers a nice little lesson in the finer points of historiography.
Told in four line verse, "George Washington's Teeth" relates an imaginative set of encounters between General Washington and his dentist as the number of teeth in the mouth of the Father of Our Country decreases one by one over the years leading to Independence and the Presidency. Well, that is not entirely true since the authors have Washington losing two teeth the night be crossed the Delaware, but that left him with seven at that point in American history, which is a lucky number that fits the victory at Trenton. Eventually Washington is elected President, which is good, but has no teeth left, which is bad (especially when having your portrait painted). Fortunately, he comes up with a solution.
The first part of "George Washington's Teeth" is pretty whimsical, but then the last part of the book contains a time line of important events in George Washington's life from his own letters, diaries, and accounts. However, instead of dealing primarily with the highpoints of Washington's personal and political life, we learn about what historians have uncovered about his teeth: from having already lost two teeth by the time he was twenty two and the rest were all black and rotted, to eating pickled tripe because it does not hurt his teeth, and a letter requesting plaster of Paris to make some false teeth. These are the sort of bizarre historical details that can trick young readers into thinking history is fun.
There are even photographs of Washington's last sent of dentures. For the record, they were not wooden, but carved from hippopotamus ivory, the palate swaged from a sheet of gold, and springs made of coiled gold wire. Hopefully there are some other small nuggets of historical gold that Chandra and Comora, or like minded individuals, can turn to for books in the same spirit as this one.

Starred Review. In Cleeves's excellent third Shetland Island thriller (after White Nights), Insp. Jimmy Perez investigates the shooting death of Mima Wilson, the grandmother of Perez's bumbling if well-meaning underling, Sandy Wilson. While some believe Sandy's cousin Ronald accidentally shot Mima late one night near her croft on Whalsay, a small Shetland island, Perez has his doubts. Mima's land is the site of an archeological excavation led by eager Ph.D. student Hattie James, who recently uncovered a skeleton of indeterminate origin. When another body turns up near the dig site, Perez becomes more suspicious, even though the second death is an apparent suicide. With Sandy's help, he begins to unravel a knot of tall tales and family betrayals that stretches back to a WWII resistance movement known as the Shetland Bus. Meandering Plot that suffers from a glaring flaw
By W. Lancaster
Note: I have not read any of the other books in the series.

Generally speaking, there are two ways to set up a mystery novel. The first is to give all the relevant facts right at the beginning and then follow the detective as he/she figures out why they are all important and the second is to follow the detective as she/he uncovers clue after clue and slowly builds a picture.

This novel follows neither way. There is no sense of Perez putting facts together to reach the final picture. As a detective he's actually rather passive and just sort of floats through the novel. The fact that there are three only tangentially related plot threads didn't help. I kept hoping that they would all come together in a brilliant fashion but in the end one peters out, one is solved by an unsupported burst of insight from a previously uninsightful character, and the third is the main plot line which I will get back to. All and all, this is more of a description of the Shetland island then it is a mystery novel.

If that were all this would be a three star review, unfortunately, Cleeves then proceeds to commit a major sin of mystery writers in resolving the main plotline. There is a hidden fact that the Detective, Perez, knows that we the reader do not. This fact is revealed only in the final explanation and the book even hides the time Perez spent researching this fact.

This mystery is not resolvable with the presented information.

FASCINATING STORY
By Barbara Lane
This is the third novel in a projected Shetland Islands Quartet, following Cleeves's award winning "Raven Black" and "White Nights."

An archeological dig has started on Whalsay Island where the remains of the oldest house in the area are rumoured to have been. So methodically the team of Hattie James and Sophie are doing a painstakingly slow excavation to see what they can find.

Mima (Jemima) Wilson, the owner of the property, is found dead.. It seems that she was killed by a shotgun presumedly by a rabbit shooter out late at night and not realising what he has hit.

The young father who admits to being out that night late rabbit shooting is horrified. He takes responsibility for the terrible accident. His wife has just given birth. What a terrible situation for this young lovely couple to be in. He feels like the town will shun him. He feels he can't even go to the local pub as he is worried what people would think and he decides to give up alcohol totally. He had been drinking that night.

The Shetland Islands are such a close knit community and everyone knows everyone elses business.

A few days later Hattie James, PhD student and the moving force behind the dig is found in the trench with her wrists slit. Suicide but why did she do it??? It doesn't make sense. Or was it murder?

The pace is steady but not quick, as the layers of this close knit community are peeled away

If you enjoy getting to know real, vulnerable, and interesting characters - then add this book to your shopping cart.

An alright read
By Cheryl Koch
Shetland Islands Inspector Jimmy Perez returns in this third Shetland Islands novel, Red Bones.

Hattie James is working towards achieving her PhD in archeology. She is currently working on her thesis. If she doesn't find something of interest soon, she will have to pack up the excavation and leave. One of the residents, a woman named Evelyn wants to join the dig. Hattie agrees and her and Evelyn start digging at a practice site. What they dig up will have the whole island in an upheaval.

Mima Wilson is not a very well liked woman. She is judgmental and rude. So when she is found shot to death, her death brings mixed emotions. Inspector Perez can usually keep his work from becoming personal but this time is different. Mima was the grandmother of Perez's assistant, Sandy Wilson. Inspector Perez starts doing some investigating. He wonders if Mima's death and the discovery at the excavation site are somehow connected and if so...who would want Mima dead? This is the million dollar question.

Red Bones is the first book I have read by Ann Cleeves. I had been eyeing her work since I first heard about Raven Black but just didn't have the chance till now. I have to say that I am now wondering why I waited so long. This story had all the makings of a classic who-dunnit story. While I love these types of books and I do plan to check out the other two prior novels, there were some times when I did lose a little interest. Partly because there were so many characters that I couldn't keep them straight. Also there wasn't too much of a great mystery involved to determine who the killer was. Though I couldn't figure out the motive till the end. Overall this was a pretty good book.

John Brown's Raid on Harpers Ferry: A Brief History with Documents (Bedford Cultural Editions Series), by Jonathan Earle

Despised and admired during his life and after his execution, the abolitionist John Brown polarized the nation and remains one of the most controversial figures in U.S. history. His 1859 raid on Harpers Ferry, Virginia, failed to inspire a slave revolt and establish a free Appalachian state but became a crucial turning point in the fight against slavery and a catalyst for the violence that ignited the Civil War. Jonathan Earle’s volume presents Brown as neither villain nor martyr, but rather as a man whose deeply held abolitionist beliefs gradually evolved to a point where he saw violence as inevitable. Earle’s introduction and his collection of documents demonstrate the evolution of Brown’s abolitionist strategies and the symbolism his actions took on in the press, the government, and the wider culture. The featured documents include Brown’s own writings, eyewitness accounts, government reports, and articles from the popular press and from leading intellectuals. Document headnotes, a chronology, questions for consideration, a list of important figures, and a selected bibliography offer additional pedagogical support.

John Brown's Effort To Purge the Crime of Slavery With His Own Blood
By Rea Andrew Redd
John Brown's Raid On Harpers Ferry: A Brief History With Documents, Jonathan Earle, Bedford St. Martins Press, 158 pp., selected bibliography, index, 3 illustrations, 2 maps, questions for consideration, 2008, paperback, $12.95

On October 16, 1859, abolitionist John Brown and 19 others seized the United States Armory and Arsenal at Harpers Ferry. The actions of Brown's men brought national attention to the emotional divisions concerning slavery.

In the summer of 1859, John Brown with 21 others took up residence near Harpers Ferry on the Kennedy farm a few miles northeast of Harpers Ferry in Maryland. He trained a group of twenty-two men, including his sons Oliver, Owen, and Watson, in military maneuvers. On the night of Sunday, October 16, Brown and all but three of the men seized the armory, Halls Rifle Works and hostages from nearby farms. The first Harpers Ferry citizen to confront the raiders was Hayward Shepard, an African-American railroad baggage handler.

In general, the plan was to seize weapons and to add African-Americans to the party. Within 12 hours from the beginning of the raid, authorities in Washington ordered Colonel Robert E. Lee and an infantry detachment to Harpers Ferry. At 6:30a on the morning of Tuesday, October 18, Lee ordered a group of men to storm the engine house. In the brief but dramatic assault, Brown was received a serious head wound. Brown was taken to the Jefferson County seat of Charles Town for trial.

In his brief history of Brown and his raid, Jonathan Earle sketches the key elements of Brown's life, the political condition of the nation, the raid and immediate responses to it. One historian has describes the responses to John Brown as being being in one of two categories. Brown was incompetent and a sociopath or Brown was martyred by slaveholders.

Earle's work is among the best concise introductions to the event of 150 years ago. Brown receives a new biography about every 20 years. Most recently, Stephen Oates' To Purge This Land With Blood and David Reynolds' John Brown have done much to redeem Brown's reputation. Previous biographies from the 1920s through the 1960 focus on the irrationality and religious fundamentalism of the man. As justice and race issues came to the fore beginning in the 1950s through the present day, Brown's life and crimes have been reinterpeted in the light of the issues of the 1850s and 1860s.

Additionally, terroristic acts motivated by religion are more common today than Americans wish. Brown's understood that America was at war in the 1850s. The enslavement of about four million Africans was warfare against the Judeo-Christian God's desire for complete equality among all humans. Most abolitionists did not see Blacks, enslaved or free, to be equal. Abolitionists for the most part wished to do away with slavery but not inequality. Brown wished to do away with both slavery and inequality.

Does conscience outweigh unjust social laws?
By Kerry Walters
I'm a longtime fan of the Bedford Series in History and Culture, and this new volume on John Brown's raid only reenforces my admiration. It offers a good introduction to the events leading up to the raid, the raid itself, and its immediate aftermath, as well as a judicious selection of pertinent contemporaneous documents: Brown's writings during the Blood Kansas months as well as a hair-raising account of the Pottawatomie massacre by a couple of survivors; Brown's writings about the raid itself, including the constitution for the free state he intended to found, transcripts of pre-trial interviews, snippets of his trial testimony, and several letters he wrote while awaiting execution; and newspaper editorials commenting on the raid, Thoreau's purple defense of Brown, Virginia Governor Henry Wise's address to the Commonwealth's legislature, and excerpts from the congressional Mason Report. There's also a good map of Harper's Ferry, a helpful chronology, and a bibliography.

Perhaps it's beyond the scope of this volume. But I would've liked to have seen some discussion, both in the introduction and in the compiled documents, about the deep ethical and political questions raised by the raid. As Brown says in his letters and pre-trial interviews, the raid was justified (in his mind) by a "higher law" appeal. The Constitution may sanction slavery, but conscience and the word of God do not. But as Governor Wise (as well as Abraham Lincoln, for that matter) responded, the law of the land is and ought to be inviolable. Appeals to higher laws are too subjective--too anarchic, as Wise says--to be allowed. The fascinating thing about this debate is that it's really quite independent of how one thinks about Brown. One can easily conclude (for example) that he was a fanatic who was morally wrong to attack Harper's Ferry, while still affirming that there are times in which higher law appeals are not only reasonable but morally obligatory.

When does moral law trump social law? Ought conscience be given priority in a conflict between it and the law of the land? This is really the core issue that Brown's raid on Harper's Ferry raises, and it's still very much a live one. Ought legal injustices to be tolerated until the law can be changed? But what if the powers that be refuse to change the laws? What then?

Essential Documents Reader for John Brown
By Jean Libby, Allies for Freedom
John Brown's raid on Harpers Ferry is often the topic of study in classrooms and American history. Professor Jonathan Earle's book is exactly what is needed to understand his thinking, by publishing most of the agreements and articles that Brown wrote throughout the years 1851 - 1859. I research and write about John Brown frequently -- most recently with a chronology of his photo portraits (daguerreotypes) John Brown Photo Chronology; catalog of the exhibition at Harpers Ferry 2009. This documents book has what I wanted to reference, all in one place.

Thimble Summer, by Elizabeth Enright

A few hours after nine-year-old Garnet Linden finds a silver thimble in the dried-up riverbed, the rains come and end the long drought on the farm. The rains bring safety for the crops and the livestock, and money for Garnet's father. Garnet can't help feeling that the thimble is a magic talisman, for the summer proves to be interesting and exciting in so many different ways.
There is the arrival of Eric, an orphan who becomes a member of the Linden family; the building of a new barn; and the county fair at which Garnet's carefully tended pig, Timmy, wins a blue ribbon. Every day brings adventure of some kind to Garnet and her best friend, Citronella. As far as Garnet is concerned, the thimble is responsible for each good thing that happens during this magic summer―her thimble summer.

'One of the best written of this season's juveniles.... will interest both girls and boys, since it is about Garnet Linden and her brother Jay, and can find readers up to twelve and over. The setting is a middle-western farm, and the descriptions of wind and weather are vivid and authentic. There is a truly American quality about it that delighted me.' - Rosemary Carr Benet, The Saturday Review of Literature.

Summertime and the living is easy
By E. R. Bird
The Newbery Award winning books of the 1930s went through an interesting phase that was never again to be repeated. Starting with "Caddie Woodlawn" (1935), continuing with "Roller Skates" (1936), and capitulating with the delightful "Thimble Summer" (1938) these books all followed spunky independent females with little to no regard for the traditional roles women had always carried. But while "Caddie" and "Roller Skates" were period pieces that ultimately ended with the girls giving in to society's restraints, "Thimble Summer" trumps this trend. In it, we have a farm girl named Garnet who has a load of exciting summer adventures and who ends her tale wearing sailor pants doing hand stands over and over again in a pasture.
The tale of "Thimble Summer" begins when Garnet finds a silver thimble in a nearby dried lakebed. According to Garner, the summer's wonderful aspects only take place after this key event. Her father receives a loan from the government allowing him to build a new barn. Her family meets and virtually adopts an adorable homeless boy. Garnet shows her favorite pig at the state fair and wins a blue ribbon. All these events are told with a marvelous simplicity and a real sense of being there with Garnet. From the very first page of this book, you notice the author's excellent writing style. About the heat of the summer Enright writes, "It was like being inside of a drum. The sky like a bright skin was stretched tight above the valley, and the earth too, was tight and hard with heat". You're in safe hands with this writer. Don't believe me? Here's another wonderful descriptive passage. "Her shoes hurt her; and with aching feet and her bundle and empty pocketbook she felt like an old, old woman coming home from seeing grandchildren who didn't love her".
But observe this book within its 1938 context. Here's a girl that does a boy's chores. We never see her darn socks or cook, though she's often seen working in the fields. She's nine or so, so she doesn't go about falling in love (not even with the adorable homeless boy). She wears pants most of the time, is never badgered by either parent to be more feminine and (the coup de grace) at the end of the story she plans to someday have a farm of her own. Fabulous. Then there are those wonderful little details about the past. Kids reading this book may not get the references to G-men, Zeppelin shaped balloons, or the running boards of cars. Fortunately these spots of the past are either
self-evident or mercilessly scant.
Is the book flawless then? Almost. There are a couple tiny flaws here and there. The line drawings accompanying the text (drawn by the author herself) are magnificent. Unfortunately, there's one time they belie the text. If you've a child who's overweight in any way, this may not be the best book to show them. While Garnet's best female friend Citronella is continually called "fat", in the book's pictures she's the most average kid you've ever seen (compared to the waiflike Garnet, of course). Any child with body image problems is going to see the pictures, read the text, and come up with some pretty heart-wrenching conclusions. If Garnet is normal then... You get the picture.
I don't really understand why kids don't know this book better. Anyone who's ever wanted to live on a farm in the country would enjoy it. Anyone who's ever wanted to hitchhike like Garnet, spend a night in a library, or swim rivers on their own would like it. It's a pip, this one. It's got moxie. Don't forgo the pleasures of "Thimble Summer" simply because it's old. You'll be missing out on more than you could have possibly imagined.

CAN A THIMBLE BE MAGIC OR BRING GOOD LUCK?
By Plume45
This is a quiet and gentle read about life on a Wisconsin farm in the 1930's, when great grand- parents still recall tales about Indians. Nine- year-old Garnet Linden (well, yes, she's blond but not necessarily Scandinavian) reminds us of Laura Ingalls, for she is plucky, mischievous and strong-willed. It was a simpler age, with simple pleasures: safe hitchiking, swimming in the creek, barn-raisings, ice cream and County Fairs. But farmers had it tough then what with drought and financial worries until the harvest was in. Garnet's brother, Jay, has decided that he does Not want to be a farmer, but what about the new orphan boy who shows up one night by the lime kiln? Is he farmer material perhaps?
There is not much of a plot--just events strung out like beads on a necklace. But it is a laid-back kind of book which young girls will enjoy. The illustrations are delightful; we see bubbly Garnet chasing chickens, locked in (I won't say where!), and on the cover she proudly holds her pet pig. One theme is that you really should be grateful to have Good Neighbors. Also that you need special eyes to recognize treasures when you find them. From the creek, then from the woods--what will she do with hers?

5 plus stars
By Sammy Madison
This is my very favorite book for young girls. First and most importantly, it is really fun to read. I can just picture an 8-year-old girl reading this during summer vacation. After reading this book, how could a kid not fall in love with reading books for recreation? It is loaded with thrilling adventure. Even though the main character is a girl, she is not a "girly girl" at all. She is an outdoor farm girl who loves nature and has an active curiosity about the world around her. The characters are lovely, and lovingly portrayed. The sketches of Garnet's pesky younger brother, restless older brother, mother and father stressed out by trying to make a farm work at the end of the depression and drought, her friend Citronella, and the people of Garnet's farm community are amazing writing and enjoyable, educational reading. There are many interesting stories about people who Garnet meets during her beautiful and exciting summer. Citronella's grandmother tells a story about growing up as a settler which is not just interesting because it is about pioneer life, meeting Indians, and her childhood adventures, it may also encourage young readers to find out about their own grandparent's stories. The account of the family firing limestone to build a new barn is fascinating, and the family meets and adopts a wonderful boy who they encounter while spending the night minding the kiln. His story really brings home the realities of the depression, when adults and children travelled the rails and backroads of America to find work and food. The contrast between Garnet, who loves the land, her older brother, who has seen the stress his father goes through to wring his living from it and wants to get away, and the young hobo who has experienced the wider world and loves the steadiness and bounty of the farm are deeper elements to the story. The story of farm life, weather, and nature is wonderful, and I am sure many, many children have fallen in love with nature and reading from this classic book.
