Review
"I've always tended to gravitate toward readers that have a writing across the curriculum emphasis because I want to give students an entry-way into thinking about the writing they'll do in other classes. At the same time, more and more emphasis these days is on public writing, or writing beyond the curriculum, so I think it's quite wonderful to see this text doing both -- writing across and beyond the curriculum."

-- Donna Strickland, University of Missouri -- Columbia

Purchased this used text book for a college-age son. It was cheaper than the used version available through the school book store and was delivered to the house well in advance of the time he needed it. It was in very good condition (as described) and I was pleased as a result.

Bullwinkle on Business: Motivational Secrets of a Chief Executive Moose, by John Hoover

"This animated business analogy is corny, outrageously unrealistic, and at times fiendishly clever. Much of the practical wisdom imbedded in it is right on target. . . . A good refresher course for entrepreneurs, intrapreneurs, and others in management and leadership positions who may have become too set in the ways of doing things."―Cecil Johnson, The Salt Lake Tribune

At last, a fresh, new voice speaks out for organizational excellence in the free enterprise system. Who is this great leader who possesses the stature, the stamina, and the swagger to be called the consummate CEO? Step up, Bullwinkle J. Moose. And step up anyone seeking to reenergize a business or organization, big or small. In ten unforgettable episodes followed by easy to complete exercises, Bullwinkle reveals insightful, useful, and effective motivational secrets of a chief executive moose that can immediately be applied to real-life situations.

Bullwinkle and his better angel, Rocket J. "Rocky" Squirrel, are Chief Executive and Chief People Officer, respectively, of the Frostbite Falls Mitten Company. But Bullwinkle soon begins to believe his own press clippings and forgets who makes the business run and who the business exists to serve.

The antics of Bullwinkle's bungling and misguided management consultants, Boris Badenov and Natasha Fatale, only serve to propel the maladroit moose deeper into his own entropy. But Mr. Peabody and his adroit pupil, Sherman, use the WayBac Machine to monitor lessons learned from leaders throughout history. The Beagle and his adopted boy draw concise correlations to how Rocky helps his antlered friend learn that only enthusiastic people can energize an enterprise. By teaching Bullwinkle to unleash the collective wisdom, experience, and talent of his team members, Rocky transforms a moose with marginal managerial potential into a magni?cent motivator.

You won't want to miss a single episode of Bullwinkle on Business.

Who moved my Moose?
By Harry B. Demaio
[[ASIN:031236265X Bullwinkle on Business: Motivational Secrets of a Chief Executive Moose] Disappointing!! Beneath a thin and not too cleverly selected veneer of reworked sayings and rehashed mishaps of the Great Moose and his entourage lies yet another advice to the executive ala Who Moved My Cheese (Limburger)These sorts of books are an annoying waste of time and contribute very little of lasting value to the reader. Any Moose fan would do better spending his or her money on the DVD collections of Bullwinkle or reading some of the autobiographies of top notch executives. You pick. The Great Moose deserved better.

When the great Velázquez was painting his masterpieces at the Spanish court in the seventeenth century, his colors were expertly mixed and his canvases carefully prepared by his slave, Juan de Pareja. In a vibrant novel which depicts both the beauty and the cruelty of the time and place, Elizabeth Borton de Treviño tells the story of Juan, who was born a slave and died an accomplished and respected artist.

Upon the death of his indulgent mistress in Seville, Juan de Pareja was uprooted from the only home he had known and placed in the charge of a vicious gypsy muleteer to be sent north to his mistress's nephew and heir, Diego Velázquez, who recognized at once the intelligence and gentle breeding which were to make Juan his indispensable assistant and companion―and his lifelong friend.

Through Juan's eyes the reader sees Velázquez's delightful family, his working habits and the character of the man, his relations with the shy yet devoted King Philip IV and with his fellow painters, Rubens and Murillo, the climate and customs of Spanish court life. When Velázquez discovers that he and Juan share a love for the art which is his very life, the painter proves his friendship in the most incredible fashion, for in those days it was forbidden by law for slaves to learn or practice the arts. Through the hardships of voyages to Italy, through the illnesses of Velázquez, Juan de Pareja loyally serves until the death of the painter in 1660.

I, Juan de Pareja is the winner of the 1966 Newbery Medal.

About the Author

Elizabeth Borton de Treviño (1904-2000) was the highly acclaimed author of many books for young people. Born in California, it was her move to Mexico in the 1930s that inspired many of her books, including El Güero: A True Adventure Story and Leona: A Love Story. She won the Newbery Medal in 1966 for I, Juan de Pareja.

From AudioFile
This 1965 publication won a Newbery Medal and top awards in England and France. De Trevino's masterpiece is enhanced by Ward's glorious narration. The colorful text is presented so artistically that simply listening to all of the different voices and accents is a great pleasure. Juan is an African slave who assists Spanish painter Vel‡zquez and himself becomes an accomplished artist in spite of the prohibition against a slave learning to paint. The diverse European accents, as well as Juan's African speech patterns as a child and an adult, are masterfully recreated. The book closes very interestingly with de Trevino explaining the art of creating a biography. S.G.B. (c)AudioFile, Portland, Maine

NOT an "Uncle Tom"
By Sharon Huston
One reason the story is so powerful is because it is NOT an adrenaline-packed full-bodied cry against social injustice. It's a quiet, beautiful story, and these very qualities highlight why slavery was such an insidious institution.

Some reviewers claim the book is slow. They are right, but let's examine the slowness in a little more detail. First of all, the book is intended to be a realistic look at a fictional person (not a biography as reviews state), which forced the author to cut back on the "page-turner" syndrome we're affected with today. (I'm going to sound preachy here, but most people don't lead perilous lives!! We aren't secretly spies, we don't get lost on islands populated by enigmatic others, and we don't become pop stars on American Idol.)

The book lacks whips, and bloodhounds, and chases across Southern swamps in the moonlight with a baby strapped to the hero's back.

But that doesn't make the book any less of a voice against slavery.

The sheer genius of the book is that it shows why slavery was an accepted part of life, and also shows why slavery is wrong. Juanico (he's referred to by a child's name for almost the entire book) is well-fed, he's loved, he's taken care of. He's a model slave leading a perfect life of servitude. At the time people would point to slaves like Juanico and say slavery clearly wasn't evil because Juan was well-treated.

As privileged readers, however, we know Juan doesn't like his permanent childlike state. He wants to paint. He wants it bad enough to steal from a man who has served as his father figure. Bad enough to risk death.

That's what slavery is all about -- limiting someone's life based on the color of their skin. By showing us Juan's pain Tervino shows that even the mildest form of slavery is wrong.

Juan writes his memoir after Vasquez's death, but (if memory serves) we never know precisely how long after the death. Personally I think the death is recent, and Juan is still processing the injustice of what happened to him. Without modern therapy to help him touch his inner rage he might never rail against Diego Velasquez, who he loved.

Other reviewers don't like how Velasquez "forgot" to free Juan. To me that is one of the most realistic parts of the book. Velasquez saw Juanico as a child, as a slave, for almost the entire book. He never frees Juan because he doesn't see Juan as a man and an equal. This mindset lasts right up to the point when he sees Juan's paintings. At that moment their relationship shifts. Diego suddenly sees Juan as an equal, and in that moment he frees Juan.

Several reviewers also seem to want some retribution; a better, more climatic ending. I personally like the ending because it's realistic. Juan comes to terms with what life has dealt him, maintaining the quiet dignity that makes him such a strong character.

Truth in Art and Loyalty in Friendship
By Plume45
Trevino's 1966 Newbery winner may seem a sleeper by today's standards of violence and adult themes in YA literature. Nevertheless, I consider it an excellent representative for both Biography and Historical Fiction genres. Careful research yields authentic 17th century detail as Trevnio recreates the Baroque court of Spain, from the viewpoint of the royal painter, Diego Velasquez, and his faithful Black slave, Juan de Pareja.
Narrated in the first person by Juanico from his sheltered childhood, this gently-paced book relates the historical events and reconstructed dialogue and emotions for much of his life. The poor boy suffered horribly at the hands of a cruel gypsy mule driver, but once he reached the haven of his new master in Madrid, such torture would never be inflicted on him again. Juan disovers that he also possesses artistic talents and ambitions, but in Baroque Spain it was illegal for a slave to practice any form of art. Thus he had to steal colors and paint in secret, as the punishment for disobedience to this particular law was most severe--even unto death.
During this partial biography of the great court painter, Velasquez, we meet two other famous artists who visited the master: Rubens and Murillo. We are treated to private, behind-the-scenes glimpses of the blond King and his pompous entourage. As Juan travels in Italy with his famous Master, he receives conflicting impressions of Italians and their artistic style. Yet he earns the respect of those around him with his impressive, folkoric healing skills. But art is his private passion; he refuses to stop painting on the sly. Since he is an honest man, such deception causes him great guilt and shame. Otherwise, his life as a slave is almost enviable, since he does not chafe at the yoke of slavery--he merely resents the unfair restrictions on talent based on inherited bondage.
I was impressed by his loyalty to and sincere devotion for the Master, even after Velasquez changed their status. This story reveals the meaning of true friendship, which knows no racial or ethnic barriers. This is an excellent book for Black History relations; it includes a brief discussion of mankind's great curse: slavery. There are different ways to accomplish the goal of peaceful coexistence between races; this book leads introspective readers to reflect on the philosophy of Life.

A thoughtful read
By Amazon Customer
I just finished reading this novel to my children. The prose is beautiful and my children are too young to appreciate sentence structure and word usage, but not too young to hang on every lovely phrase, even when not quite knowing what it means. This was a gentle introduction to the world of slavery. Children in the U.S. often think of it as just a part of our history and not part of the history of the world (in this case, Spain) which continues to this day in many parts of the globe. It is good for them to know that respect for human freedom is something that people have been fighting for many years before our civil war (in this case the mid-17th century).

As for the critics who needed more action, good literature is not a comic book. There are some stories which unfold on dark, velvety canvases like Velazquez, subtle and rich. Others complain that Juan didn't seem to mind being a slave..where was the outrage? Toward the end of the book another slave provides a contrast in attitude, and throughout the book it is clear that Juan is strangely at peace with his life as a servant. In my daughter's opinion, Juan felt loved and his masters were kind and never whipped him like you usually hear. He enjoyed his work and it was in his persona to be content and not dwell on the negative-the fictionalized character of Juan de Pareja is one we came to care for.

In addition, this was a great choice for art appreciation. After reading the book, we looked at works by Velazquez and by Juan de Pareja on the internet and instead of being old works by Spanish masters, it was like meeting old friends.

Best of the Lords of Vice
By Melissa
After Dark with a Scoundrel is the best of the books Alexandra Hawkins has written in her Lords of Vice series and it is mostly due to the heroine. She is a bold woman who is steadfast in her love for the hero.

When Regan was only fifteen she was wildly attracted to her brother's friend Dare. He was older but when they shared a kiss quite unexpectedly it cemented in Regan's mind that Dare was the one for her. Her brother had a different view and shipped the curious Regan off to a finishing school. Five years later she arrives in London partially to bedevil her brother and she also wants be with Dare.

Dare is fascinated even more by the very grown up Regan but he is also aware that her brother would never countenance a relationship between them. They belong to a club that is quite frankly full of sin and I actually found their non-stop hedonism tedious. Dare is from a rather screwed up family. His older brother stole his true love at sixteen and Dare is still entangled in his brother and sister-in-law's problems.

Dare realizes that Regan is a target by the young bucks of the ton and when trying to protect her from others ends up falling for her himself. Regan is at first thrilled but soon discovers that she wants more from Dare than he is willing to give.

Regan is the engine that runs this story and she keeps the reader entertained. She is unexpected, having been raised by her brother she is a free thinker, athletic and courageous. She is quick to take responsibility for her actions, one very fine quality about her is she does not blame shift.

Her relationship with Dare was a romantic lively journey and it started as soon as she arrived in London. The leads have instant chemistry and Regan's less than proper upbringing puts her into a class by herself. She is both a lady and a rebel, but she is not hurtful toward others and her actions are not annoying. This couple is interesting and unpredictable, making this a genuine page turner.

I was let down! BIG TIME!
By bookworm2bookworm
This is the third book of "Lords of Vice" series, and there are seven of them. Lords of Vice are seven friends, very close, more like brothers. All seven are titled, rich, Rouges, Rakes and Scoundrels and very proud of it. Rules for these men are there in order to be broken.

We meet all of them, (Sin, Vane, Hunter, Saint, Frost, Dare and Reign) in "All Night with a Rogue", where we can't but fall in love with Sin, who is one sick Rogue. I just loved everything about that story. All the characters, the plot, pace, dialogue and humor. In this first book we get a glimpse of each of these men, and we are intrigued with each one. From the beginning, from the first moment our Hero looks into Juliana's eyes, we're hooked. We root for these two and we are rewarded with telling of a wonderful love story.

In the second book "Till Dawn with the Devil" the boys are back and Reign's story is just full of twists and turns and once more we're just lured into their world with a very compelling story in which one more Lord of Vice succumbs to love. Ms. Hawkins yet again did a wonderful job in telling the story of Reign and Sophia. All the characters were very well developed, and we've gotten to know more of our Lords and their lives, and at this point we are well into the series that we need to know more of Dare and Allegra. What happened, how it happened and why it happened?

"After Dark with a Scoundrel" opens with Regan, Frosts sister at fifteen who was basically brought up with the Lords of Vice as brothers. She had a fancy for one in particular, Dare. And here is where I encountered my first problem with this book. Dare is eight years older than Regan, and while at her twenty to his twenty eight, all is well and good, I had a big problem with a twenty three year old dallying with a fifteen year old sister of his best friend. I just didn't buy it. It felt wrong. On top of all that, Frost's only reaction upon finding those two kissing is to send Regan to a Boarding school. Dare gets off scot free. Fast forward, and I mean FAST, five years and we get to meet the little Regan at twenty, back from school and still what? In love, in infatuation with Dare that she set out to seduce him? Yet again, I'm not buying it. As for Dare, at sixteen he falls madly, passionately in love with Allegra, who is his age as well. He loves this girl with all of his heart and soul, and she cheats on him with his older brother Charles, (the future Duke), who has no qualms of getting the stupid chit pregnant and passing her off on his younger brother. When push came to shove, Allegra admits to Charles having fathered her child and in that moment Dare's heart breaks, but still he would have married her, however question still remains if he would have forgiven her.

Eleven years later, we see Dare living with the consequences of this triangle. Allegra's panting for him, demanding his presence, Mrs. Randall wants him for her lover, and Regan is after him also. What's a poor Scoundrel to do, but seduce his friend's sister and never even thinking much of the consequences of the liaison? NOT BUYING IT! NONE!

I wish this story was thought through better. It had so much more to give us. It was rushed, and it suffered. BIG TIME! I wanted to feel the pain of a boy who was mentally abused by his father as well as physically by his brother. A young man who was badly used by a girl who played him falls, who has broken his heart, and afterwards for years played on his sympathies. I wanted to know that at twenty three he knew better than to kiss a girl that was vulnerable and innocent. Yes, I know. He's a Scoundrel. But even though he is, I needed him to have honor. To have shame. He showed none. Frost baffled me as well. He finds out that his best friend takes his sisters virginity, and he coldly throws him out. Really? Seriously? That's it? NOT BUYING IT!

I've anticipated this book for a while and it let me down. I expected more of this story. Dare's story should have been as compelling as the other two. I will buy the next four in the series. At this point I'm invested in these men. I like them. I want to meet the women they fall in love with. I also want to let Ms. Hawkins know that she can do better than this book. I know it. I read the first two books and I LOVED both.

Lord Hugh Mordare, better known as Dare, is one frustrated man. For most of her life, Lady Regan, trailed after him and the rest of the Lords of Vice due to the fact that her older brother, Frost, is a good friend. Needless to say the young lady did not have quite a conventional upbringing. When Dare had noticed she was starting to... well, blossom, he knew it signaled a temptation that would eventually be hard to resist. As Frost is one of his closest friends, he knew it would be wise to simply steer clear of the young lady instead of possibly risking one of his long lasting friendships. However, after Frost caught them in a tender embrace and sharing a kiss, Frost packed her off to boarding school, away from the rest of the Lords of Vice and away from him.

Five years later and she's back. She's more beautiful than ever and Dare can't seem to get his mind off of her or forget that kiss.

I loved this story. Loved it. And the only reason I did not rate this a 5 out of 5 was for the simple fact that while Dare implied how much he loved and cared for Regan he never said the words. Actions may speak volumes, but the words "I love you" still has a nice ring to my ears. Ignoring that one fact, I still say that After Dark With A Scoundrel is deliciously scandalous. It is so good, I find a desire to actually read it again.

Now, some people might have issues with the fact that Dare was already in his early twenties when he started to really notice Regan, who was only 15 when they shared their first kiss. However, if one does consider the time in which the story takes place, then it definitely wasn't out of the ordinary. As a historical romance novel, it fits the bill.

Personally, the story is refreshing, tantalizing and I just couldn't get enough. After Dark With A Scoundrel has made me want to look up the other books in the Lords of Vice series as well so I can read them to tide me over while I anxiously await the next book in the series. Consider it officially on the must keep shelf.
