The Last Illusion (Molly Murphy Mysteries), by Rhys Bowen

Irish immigrant and PI Molly Murphy is thrilled to have a ticket to the theater to see a trio of illusionists that are all the rage. Indeed, headlining is Harry Houdini, the most sensational of them all; he has just returned from entertaining European kings and queens for a brief run on Broadway.

But before Houdini can even take the stage, the opening act goes horribly wrong and to the crowd’s shock the illusionist saws into his assistant. In the aftermath, the stunned performer accuses Houdini of tampering with the equipment he keeps under lock and key. And he’s not the only one critical of “The King of Handcuffs.” Risking his life every night, Houdini has raised the stakes to such a perilous level that he’s putting lesser acts out of business.

With everyone on edge, Houdini’s wife hires Molly to be part investigator/part bodyguard, but how can she protect a man who literally risks his life every night? And how is she going to uncover whether these masters of illusion are simply up to their tricks or if there truly is something much more treacherous going on.

With sparkling wit, charming characters, and historic detail, multiple award winner Rhys Bowen brings early-twentieth-century New York City and the fantastic performers of the time vividly to life in The Last Illusion.

From Publishers Weekly
Set in New York City in 1903, Bowen's winning ninth Molly Murphy mystery (after 2009's In a Gilded Cage) opens with a magic show at Miner's Theatre on the Bowery, attended by Molly and her fiancé, police captain Daniel Sullivan, who wants her to give up her unconventional profession of private investigator. When the sawing-a-lady-in-half trick goes fatally wrong, this horrible accident brings the evening's entertainment to an early end, preventing Molly and Daniel from seeing the show's main attraction, Harry Houdini. After both Signor Scarpelli, the magician whose stage equipment was apparently sabotaged, and his female assistant's corpse disappear, Houdini's wife, Bess, who worries an enemy of her husband is out to get him, asks Molly for help. Later, an act the handcuff king attempts almost ends in another death, confirming Bess's fears. The gutsy Molly, who's no prim Edwardian miss, will appeal to fans of contemporary female detectives. From Booklist
Molly Murphy witnesses a terrible accident at a magical-illusion show and soon finds herself pulled into the dangerous and mysterious world of illusionists in early-twentieth-century New York City. Hired by Bess Houdini, Molly is tasked with preventing Houdini from being killed on stage, something that Bess desperately fears after a string of accidents at the theater. But the illusionists are a tight-lipped group who refuse to share their secrets. Fortunately, Molly has some inside help in the form of her fiancé, Daniel, a police captain. His help comes with strings, however, as Daniel disapproves of Molly working such a dangerous case, especially as he really wishes she was planning their wedding. Despite sparring with Daniel, Molly perseveres with the case. With plot elements including a counterfeiting scheme and German spies (in addition to Houdini), this historical mystery delivers a top-notch, detail-rich story full of intriguing characters. Bowen does it again!
By Ruth D. B. Brooks
When Molly agrees to protect Houdini, she has no idea that she's entering a world of secrets and illusions. As she tries to take care of her client, it becomes clear that nothing is as it seems. Molly is at her best in this fast-paced mystery, and I simply couldn't put it down. I recommend this book and the entire series!

Great book in the series
By Julie A. Erickson
Another in the wonderful series by Rhys Bowen, the Last Illusion taught me about Houdini, the spy game pre-WWI, and of course, what New York was like in the early 1900's. I learn a lot every time I read one of Bowen's books. This plot was a little more complex than some of the others, which I liked a lot.

The Man Who Would Not Shut Up: The Rise of Bill O'Reilly, by Marvin Kitman

Fair? Balanced?

To some, Bill O'Reilly is a semi-demented cable TV talk show host who can be an obnoxious, insufferable, opinionated, rude loudmouth whose views, the kinder ones say, are typical right-wing drivel. But there is much more to O'Reilly than what meets eye. O'Reilly is the paradigm of idiosyncrasy in television journalism.

On the rough road to the top, O'Reilly learned how to give the public what it wants and thinks it needs. From his early education at the hands of nuns to an advanced degree in public policy from Harvard, from working at local television stations and rising through the ranks to network news, O'Reilly spent nearly twenty-five years learning his craft before he became an overnight star at Fox News.

In this very intimate look at the man and what matters to him, veteran media critic Marvin Kitman explores all the experiences that led to the making of Bill O'Reilly―a nonconformist in a business that demands conformity as the price of success, and a man who has risen to the top by not playing by the rules of broadcast news. Kitman shows that O'Reilly is not a knee-jerk conservative, but an "independent" freethinker with a mind of his own, and he believes what journalism needs is more Bill O'Reillys. Not screamers, the blowhards like the current O'Reilly clones rushed on the air since his success, but trained journalists, reporting the news and telling us why, in their opinion, the world is a crazy place.

Supported by twenty-nine interviews with O'Reilly, Marvin Kitman chronicles a descent from reporter of news to spewer of views.

A good read
By James C. Gibson
This is a good read. It doesn't gloss over, nor fully agree with, O'Reilly's immovable viewpoints but is sympathetic to what he's trying to do. You get some info on O'Reilly's origins and how he came by his strong opinions as well as the kind of life he leads off-camera. You certainly don't have to be a right-winger to enjoy this book, just have an interest in how people develop into what they become as adults and how a few can persist against popular opinion. You also can see, if you're looking, that O'Reilly, and probably other high profile voices, don't take themselves nearly as seriously as they appear to on camera and certainly not a seriosly as some of their critics.

Well Researched Biography--Guaranteed To Provoke "Spinheads" & "Anti-Spinheads" Alike!
By Keith Heapes
I already knew that Marvin Kitman had written an "unauthorized" biography on Bill O'Reilly a couple of years ago titled "The Man Who Would Not Shut Up," and I honestly doubted it would be a serious or worthwhile read. But after reading the one or two sane reviews on Amazon.com, I decided to give it a try. I was not only surprised, I was for the most part pleasantly surprised.

I think it was the book title that probably caused me to initially give the book a pass. But after discovering the tremendous amount of time and research Kitman put into this book, which included almost thirty interviews with O'Reilly himself, I was ready to give it a serious look. Kitman beautifully lays out the book in five very informative and chronological segments. He spends more than half of the book (Part I) taking a detailed look at O'Reilly's pre-The Factor life. He appropriately titles this section "The Making of an O'Reilly." If you have already read O'Reilly's latest biography, "A Bold Fresh Piece of Humanity," a lot of the information in Kitman's book is familiar ground, yet is presented from a different and a very interesting point of view. In this part, Kitman mostly just lays out the biographical facts, while inserting only a limited amount of opinions, observations and analysis from the biographer.

Kitman makes no attempt to hide the fact that his is a liberal and has little in common with Bill O'Reilly. But I believe most readers will at least be satisfied that he certainly did his homework in compiling the research and interviews for this book. Kitman spent five years of researching background material, conducting interviews and locating classic black and white pictures and legal documents in preparation for writing this book!

The book is filled with revealing quotes from O'Reilly himself (Of course), and a virtual "who's-who" of O'Reilly's childhood friends, teachers, schoolmates, coworkers, employees, bosses, rivals, friends and foes alike. Kitman really went all out with interviewing those in O'Reilly's past. This is what I found to be the strongest and most impressive aspect of the book.

Though Kitman admits most of those in broadcast news write O'Reilly off as little more than a demented, obnoxious, insufferable loudmouth (and Kitman admittedly agrees with them), but during the writing of this book he also admits that there is much more to O'Reilly than meets the eye; a much deeper person and journalist than the blustery and physically imposing man (6'4", 200+ pounds) he first encountered. This book is no simple caricature of Bill O'Reilly, but an intimate and sometimes moving look at the man and what really matters to him. He follows O'Reilly through his rough years at home, in school, his experiences as a high school teacher in Florida, and as a nonconformist in the world of written journalism and broadcast news.

In Part II, Kitman covers O'Reilly's rise to the position of senior anchor and "boss" of The O'Reilly Factor on the FOX News Channel. Most people in broadcast news try to simply pigeonhole O'Reilly as just another rigid conservative and not worth listening to. But Kitman believes journalism needs more unconventional, independent freethinkers like O'Reilly; trained journalists, reporting the news others won't touch and providing balanced analysis, coupled with their own viewpoint in addressing as many of the public's tough questions as possible.

I enjoyed getting to know more about O'Reilly's family, sister, wife, and two children, something O'Reilly has stayed far away from talking about. I least enjoyed the latter chapters of the book (especially Part III) where Kitman seems to lose focus as a biographer and begins to join the other "anti-Spinheads" by launching his own personal insults at O'Reilly. I felt this departure from standard biographical form detracted from an otherwise excellent book.

By the time you near the end of this book, you will probably realize that Kitman genuinely likes O'Reilly. Not his arrogant persona, mind you. He really likes O'Reilly, the journalist. Note the following quotes:

** "Every night he brings passion to the tube....Those are the things that won me over. I liked O'Reilly's anger. He goes after the dragon, what Fred Friendly, Ed Murrow's producer at CBS News used to say was the true function of news. O'Reilly has the fire of a reformer, a man who got angry at social injustice, as he saw it. He wasn't afraid to get involved."

** "I think it's probably a better world having people like him (O'Reilly) on the TV news.

** "O'Reilly is a serious journalist who doesn't play by the rules of objectivity. He is not alone in considering news and analysis valid journalism. Actually, he is a throwback to the way it was in the old days when CBS News was the paragon, the model for all TV news."

I believe the quotes above speak for themselves.

I do have one minor administrative note for your reading entertainment. This is the second book I have read this year where the writer, or maybe the publisher, chose to use, in my opinion, a near useless format for their End Notes. There are no notations in the text to even indicate there are any End Notes. Then, when you later discover there are pages and more pages of notes (22 pages in this book!), the only indicator to what each note is referring to is a page number. No indication on what line or what specific information on the page the note is referencing. This was very aggravating for me since I see real value in footnoting. I realize the traditional form of footnoting at the bottom of the page being referenced (The kind most of us seasoned readers learned in high school and college) take more time and effort. However, in this book anyway, the author and publisher would have garnered the undying gratitude of readers like me if the traditional method was used. Enough grumbling about that. The book also contains and excellent Bibliography and an Index.

In closing, whether you are a "Spinhead", an "Anti-Spinhead" or you are just too busy watching reruns of American Idol to care either way, there is definitely something in this book for every reader to either really love, or really despise. Go ahead and take a chance; You simply can't go wrong here.

Good Book
By Bookworm
I don't often give five stars, but this book is deserving of one. I knew a little bit about O'Reilly's background. I watch his show, but flip over to other channels quite a bit. On whole I probably watch about 20% of his show on average. Most interesting is his interviews with Dick Morris and Karl Rove.

I find it interesting that O'Reilly is a cheapskate and that he prefers living on Long Island as opposed to Manhatten. It probably helps keep him grounded. Too bad other media stars don't do the same. He drives used cars, as cars mean nothing to him. Can he be all that bad? Yes, he has his character flaws, but then so does everybody else in the media or elsewhere. I did appreciate the insight to newsrooms and the politics of working in TV. It's realy not much different than what everybody else who works for a living has to put up with on a daily basis.

Read the book and judge for yourself providing your neutral or a conservative. Liberals will get heartburn as they love to hate Mr. O.

The Trolls, by Polly Horvath

Aunt Sally is beyond any of Melissa, Amanda, and Pee Wee's expectations. She has come all the way from Vancouver Island, Canada, to take care of the children while their parents are away, and right from the start, Aunt Sally enchants them with tales of her childhood with their father. Odd characters figure largely in the stories, like Maud, a hunter rumored to have killed eighty cougars; Great-uncle Louis, a health nut who insists everyone should gnaw on sticks for extra fiber; and Fat Little Mean Girl, the star of a cautionary tale involving witchcraft and candy. All of Aunt Sally's reminiscences lead up to a crucial story about trolls, sinister creatures who supposedly lurked along the shore at night. The trolls had the power to change Aunt Sally's life forever, and their legacy may change the lives of the three present-day children as well.

Amazon.com Review
"All Sunday, the children made the most of Aunt Sally. She finished their Halloween costumes, proved a tireless player of cribbage and I Doubt It, read Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle stories out loud, using just the right expression, and never put a lid on the cookie jar. She was, all in all, the most satisfactory grownup the children had ever known."

Transported into their lives not with an umbrella like Mary Poppins, but equally as dramatically, Aunt Sally is introduced to the Ohio-dwelling Anderson family when Mom and Dad are off to Paris and in dire need of a last-minute babysitter. Aunt Sally, however, was not Mr. Anderson's first choice. Aunt Sally is his sister, and part of a past he would rather forget.

Ten-year-old Melissa, 8-year-old Amanda, and 6-year-old Frank (alias Pee Wee) know nothing of their aunt, except that every year she sends a Christmas card from Vancouver Island with a picture of a moose with tree lights strung on it. Still, it doesn't take long for the children to warm up to her, this unusual, beehive-sporting, sparkly-eyed woman who lets them draw monsters with her eyeliner, uses string beans as walrus tusks at dinner, and tells extraordinary stories about her family history, all of which she insists are true, even the ones about the trolls. The eerie troll story in particular gives us a glimpse into the psyche of the children's father--young Robbie at the time--who is left on the beach by his siblings as an offering to the trolls, in the event that trolls existed. Even though the search parties found him, he was still somehow missing: "...I guess knowing that your own trusted family could give you away, even in jest, well, it changes things. It changes things forever.... He wasn't, in the end, ever with us again."

Aunt Sally's other stories--including the ones about the Fat Little Mean Girl and Maud who shot 80 "cougars"--are fascinating, truly hilarious, artfully timed, and wonderfully detailed, and readers will be as entranced as the Anderson children. Polly Horvath has concocted a superb, funny, poignant book that stares both the fantastical and factual parts of family history in the eye and doesn't look away. "What trolls?" said their father when he came back from Paris. "Doris, did you unpack my gray sweater?" (Ages 8 to 12) --Karin Snelson

From Publishers Weekly
When the baby-sitter cancels at the last minute, Aunt Sally fills in and shares plenty of tall tales in this National Book Award finalist, about which PW said, "Horvath's dry humor runs like a current through the book, sweeping readers along in the breathless anticipation of the next bit of absurdity." Ages 8-12.

From Kirkus Reviews
An unconventional aunt blows in from Vancouver to pinch-hit as a babysitter, and offers two sisters and their brother an entrancing view of family history. Mr. and Mrs. Anderson have nonrefundable tickets for a trip to Paris, but their babysitter has canceled on short notice. When all other options fail, mysterious Aunt Sally arrives to spend a week with ten-year-old Melissa, eight-year-old Amanda, and six-year-old Frank, unkindly referred to by his sisters as Pee Wee. With platform shoes that lace up to her knees, and eyes full of mischief, Aunt Sally is unlike anyone they've ever met, and has never been discussed by their fatherher brother. Her stories are full of colorful characters, such as a beautiful man who coaxes one relative out of mourning; Mrs. Gunderson, the dog next door; and, of course, their father, Robbie, who was the baby of the family. The stories build on each other, made suspenseful by Aunt Sally's maddening habit of leaving parts of them untold. Some of the stories are downright spooky, especially the ones about the trolls; Robbie was left on the beach with them one night and his and Sally's relationship was never the same. Most sections are also hilarious, as is the snappy and perfectly timed dialogue. Melissa's succinct definitions of entries in Aunt Sally's large vocabulary provide a thread of humor throughout, as does Aunt Sally's faithful regard for Pee Wee despite his dismissive older sisters. After the last laugh, Aunt Sally's hard-won understanding of human nature will leave readers with plenty to ponder. (Fiction. 8-12) -- Copyright ©1999, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

Delightful! My kids were howling for more
By A Customer
When the sensible baby sitter comes down with plague, and all other avenues are exhausted, Aunt Sally is allowed into the house for a week of emergency baby sitting. And what stories she brings with her! Did the family really chew sticks? Did the neighbor shoot cougers? And... will Pee Wee have to dress as a stepsister for Halloween? This story has its dark moments. The wacky beginning leads to more wistful stories of loss and family estrangement, but it ends on a hopeful note. My 8 & 10 year olds enjoyed it immensely.

Parents and children to enjoy together
By abookbug
I read this book laughing out loud, sometimes with such gusto that tears streamed down my cheeks! Unlike some books targeted toward younger audiences, it doesn't "talk down" to the reader-which can often produce a watered-down and sleepy result. With an engaging, imaginative plot and language rich in flavor and tone, "Aunt Sally" spins a yarn that children and their parents can both enjoy "eavesdropping" into. Parts of the book deal with less carefree issues, but they are presented with such warmth and humor that it makes the moral (kindness) an entirely un-adverse pill to swallow. Don't expect the main focus of the plot to center around magical creatures, though. This is a story about Family, and all the crazy things that make a family what it is.

Sally learns and teaches
By A Customer
Aunt Sally brings family history to the Anderson children, something that their father has neglected to do. She gives them humorous accounts of her brothers and sister as they grew up in a place that she describes in beautiful, loving prose. The children are enchanted. Best of all, however, is the way she treats Melissa, Amanda and Frank with respect. The children learn to enjoy Aunt Sally, and she leaves them with a lot of food for thought. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I could relate it to my father's family, to my brothers, and also to my own children. It's thought-provoking and humorous at the same time . . . not an easy thing to do. I found it a gentle reminder to value one's family.

A Charmed Life: Growing Up in Macbeth's Castle, by Liza Campbell

A Charmed Life tells the story of Liza Campbell, the last child to be born at the impressive and renowned Cawdor Castle, the same locale featured in Shakespeare's Macbeth. It was at the historical ancestral home that Liza's seemingly idyllic fairytale childhood began to resemble a nightmare.
Increasingly overwhelmed by his enormous responsibilities, Liza's father Hugh, the twenty-fifth Thane of Cawdor, tipped into madness fueled by drink, drugs, and extramarital affairs. Over the years, the castle was transformed into an arena of reckless extravagance and terrifying domestic violence, as Liza and her siblings watched their father destroy himself, his family, and their centuries-old legacy.
Painstakingly honest, thoroughly entertaining, and sharply written, Campbell's contemporary fairytale tells of growing up as a maiden in a castle where ancient curses and grisly events from centuries ago live on between its stone walls.

From the Inside Flap
"We grew up with the same parents in the same castle, but in many ways we each had a moat around us. Sometimes when visitors came they would say, "You are such lucky children; it's a fairytale life you live." And I knew they were right, it was a fairytale upbringing. But fairy tales are dark and I had no way of telling either a stranger or a friend what was going on; the abnormal became ordinary."

Liza Campbell was the last child to be born at the impressive and renowned Cawdor Castle, the family seat of the Campbells, as featured in Shakespeare's "Macbeth," Liza's father Hugh, the twenty-fifth Thane, inherited dashing good looks, brains, immense wealth, an ancient and revered title, three stately homes, and 100,000 acres of land. "A Charmed Life" tells the story of Liza's idyllic childhood with her four siblings in Wales in the 1960s, until Hugh inherited Cawdor Castle and moved his family up to the Scottish Highlands. It was at the historical ancestral home that the fairytale began to resemble a nightmare.

Increasingly overwhelmed by his enormous responsibilities, Hugh tipped into madness fuelled by drink, drugs, and extramarital affairs. Over the years, the castle was transformed into an arena of reckless extravagance and terrifying domestic violence, leading to the abrupt termination of a legacy that had been passed down through the family for six hundred years.

Written with a sharp wit, "A Charmed Life" is a contemporary fairytale that tells what is like to grow up as a maiden in a castle where ancient curses and grisly events from centuries ago live on between its stone walls. Painstakingly honest and thoroughly entertaining, LizaCampbell offers a compelling look at what it is like to grow up with enormous privilege and yet watch the father she idealizes destroy himself, his family, and his heritage.

"She writes not from catharsis or revenge, but in the spirit of puzzlement and discovery...Completely compelling." --" Daily Telegraph "(UK)

"A very powerful, painful story...I have never read such a compelling study of addiction...An exceptional writer." --" Mail on Sunday "(UK)

A Charmed Life
By S. I. Miller
(By Elizabeth Miller) My Alabama book club read the British edition of A Charmed Life in September. We all agreed it was a great choice and a marvelous story. It's a tightly written and poignant anthropological study of a privileged, titled, and terribly dysfunctional British family living in Macbeth's famous Cawdor Castle. A generous dash of dark humor counterbalances the grimness of the tale. Liza's book tries to convey to the reader an understanding of her father, and perhaps provide closure for her and her siblings. But frankly no excuse can be made for his betrayal of the Campbell children and shattering of the family legacy. Our book club ladies felt that Liza touched on a number of universal truths, and we could all relate to growing up in a family unlike the ideal TV families of the 1960's. We recommend A Charmed Life to all who would appreciate a sad, touching, and thoroughly memorable story of an extraordinary family. And where else have you seen the word "crepuscular" used so aptly?

"The Glass Castle" of the Scottish Aristocracy
By J. Landau
Absolutely riveting story of Liza Campbell's extraordinary 700-year old family's most recent generations, as bizarre and fascinating as the wildest fiction and all apparently true. It revolves around the recent history of the family that actually lived in Macbeth's castle. It has everything: sex, money, castles (stone rather than glass), fast cars, guns and battles, outrageous aristocratic misadventures, the stepmother from hell and the Scottish countryside.

The book starts off like chick-lit, but any guy will soon be hooked too --something about her father totaling five XK-Es following by the destruction of three Ferraris, having sex with over one hundred women, etc. A mother who is up for sainthood, five delightful siblings, young girls branded by their parents before they were kidnapped so they could be identified years later . . . it makes the life of the author of the bestseller "The Glass Castle" seem mundane by comparison.

Liza Campbell is a wonderful storyteller. Without giving away much, it is a story of family relationships and ill-placed trust with the author trying to see the best in what can only be described as a villain for the ages, or at least a man capable of destroying seven centuries of tradition. And that doesn't include Cawdor Castle's own Cruella de Vil.

Campbell names aristocratic (and Eurotrash)names and the book only becomes more engrossing as you go on, so set aside an afternoon or a couple of readings for one of the most fascinating biographies/autobiographies you will ever read.

Inside Aristocracy
By K. A. Peterson
The author, a professional writer, gives great insight into a life few can know: growing up in a rich and powerful family that traces its ancestors back 24 generations. Liza Campbell grew up in Wales although the family's main stronghold is Cawdor Castle, a handsome baronial pile just outside of Inverness, Scotland.

Liza tells about a surprisingly down to earth childhood guided by her parents, calm and distant Cath and her volatile and also much absent father Hugh. Her father is the central character in the book, both alive and dead. He wields a strong influence on his five children and their interactions with him and about him form the main story.

Having been to Cawdor, and loving Inverness and that part of Scotland, I was delighted to hear about this book. It did not disappoint in giving insight into the workings of the Campbell family and the well known castle which is their home.

edited to add: I vistied Cawdor castle again two months ago. It's one of the better castle open to the public in Scotland, I think, because it is a family home and yet it has large, extensive collections and gardens to interest anyone ( I liked it better than Blair Atholl, for instance.) It has some fabulous furniture and interiors. I guess the battle for ownership still rages on, so sad.

Plum Spooky (Stephanie Plum: Between the Numbers), by Janet Evanovich

Plum Spooky, the First Full Length Stephanie Plum Between-the-Numbers Novel from #1 Bestselling Author Janet Evanovich.

Turn on all the lights and check under your bed. Things are about to get spooky in Trenton, New Jersey.

According to legend, the Jersey Devil prowls the Pine Barrens and soars above the treetops in the dark of night. As eerie as this might seem, there are things in the Barrens that are even more frightening and dangerous. And there are monkeys. Lots of monkeys.

Wulf Grimoire is a world wanderer and an opportunist who can kill without remorse and disappear like smoke. He's chosen Martin Munch, boy genius, as his new business partner, and he's chosen the Barrens as his new playground.

Munch received his doctorate degree in quantum physics when he was twenty-two. He's now twenty-four, and while his brain is large, his body hasn't made it out of the boys' department at Macy's. Anyone who says good things come in small packages hasn't met Munch. Wulf Grimoire is looking for world domination. Martin Munch would be happy if he could just get a woman naked and tied to a tree.

Bounty hunter Stephanie Plum has Munch on her most-wanted list for failure to appear in court. Plum is the all-American girl stuck in an uncomfortable job, succeeding on luck and tenacity. Usually she gets her man. This time she gets a monkey. She also gets a big guy named Diesel.

Diesel pops in and out of Plum's life like birthday cake – delicious to look at and taste, not especially healthy as a steady diet, gone by the end of the week if not sooner. He's an über bounty hunter with special skills when it comes to tracking men and pleasing women. He's after Grimoire, and now he's also after Munch. And if truth were told, he wouldn't mind setting Stephanie Plum in his crosshairs.

Diesel and Plum hunt down Munch and Grimoire, following them into the Barrens, surviving cranberry bogs, the Jersey Devil, a hair-raising experience, sand in their underwear, and, of course . . . monkeys.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. Klutzy bounty hunter Stephanie Plum teams up with mysterious Diesel and the monkey left on her doorstep to track down a nerdy genius and his sinister business partner in the depths of the New Jersey Pine Barrens. Lorelei King does her usual superlative job for the Evanovich oeuvre, adding juice and dimension to each wacky character. She deftly handles everyone, from bail bond receptionist Connie's classic New Jersey accent and outrageous sidekick Lula's brash outbursts to Ranger's smooth purr (it's amazing how he, as voiced by King, can make the word babe mean so many different things). The structures of Plum novels tend to be similar; it's the laughs that keep readers coming back. King enhances the humor of this series, so much so that Evanovich fans should consider putting down that book and plugging in the CD player instead. A St. Martin's Press hardcover (reviewed online). From Booklist
Those who know and love Stephanie, Ranger, Morelli, Lula, Bob the dog, Rex the hamster, and the rest of that wacky crew in Evanovich’s Trenton-set series, have also clasped Diesel, who appears only in these “between-the-numbers” tales, to their collective hearts. Big, blond, dimpled, and paranormal, he flits into Steph’s bail-bondswoman life with unnerving irregularity, and he has special powers that extend well beyond bounty hunting. This time Diesel has a cousin named Wulf, pale, black-clad, and dead-eyed, who has hidden a nerdy scientist and a lot of equipment in the New Jersey Pine Barrens. The repartee sparkles and shimmies from razor wit to toilet humor (and back again), and the plot involves mud, food tossing, explosive farts, occasional kissing, and hilarious (and true-to-life, alas) allergic reactions (that would be from Lula). A group of monkeys, and one in particular named Carl, figure mightily in the plot, in one instance actually making the stoic, understated Ranger burst into laughter. Don’t miss Morelli’s brother-in-law, the sly Star Trek and vampire tropes, and the Jersey Devil. Incredible amounts of fun. --GraceAnne A. DeCandido

More silly nonsense....
By Happiness is reading
With a sticker price of almost $29 and even with a discount price of almost $16, Plum Spooky is another waste of money. At 309 pages, it is the first full length, between the numbers, book featuring Diesel and the world of Plum.

The Plum series used to be fun books. Wonderful to read. Deserved to be read many times. They were purchased. They were keepers. I loved them. This series of books had many dog-eared pages from being lovingly read many times.

To me, Plum used to represent a book filled with wonderful characters, heart pounding fear, laugh out loud till I cried moments, fantastic one-liners from Stephanie, Lula, Ranger, Grandma Mazure, Vinnie, Connie, and Morelli. Words like edgy, sexy, funny, witty, sharp, thrilling, and emotional filled my mind as I read.

This book is another episode of the three stooges, running amok in the world of Plum.

Well, on with my difficult-to-write review. Synopsis: It is a sad, sad day when an author who gave us the Plum series has to issue a book filled with monkeys and characters that revel in gross bodily functions.

This book takes place in the Pine Barrens of New Jersey. It should be very scary. It's not. The characters that live in the Pine Barrens should be scary. They are not. E. Bunny (retired Easter Bunny), Sasquatch (retired something) and, good grief, there is Elmer The Fire Farter! They are not scary. They are ridiculous. The villain is Gerwulf Grimoire. He is supposed to be scary. He's not.

There is a lot of Lula and Tank in this book. But who are They???? Tank lives in a cute little old lady bungalow, has three cats, carries their pictures in his wallet and Tank sweats a lot. Lula sneezes and farts throughout the book.

Of course, Carl the Monkey is back. He's not alone. There are a lot more monkeys. Wearing helmets with antenna's. Morelli? Yup, he's in there. He's babysitting his loser, cheating, brother Anthony. Ellen/Helen Plum's in there. Drinking whiskey disguised as ice tea. Connie and Vinnie are in there.

Ranger. He's in there. I'm assuming that when he told Janet he wanted to pass on being in this book, she didn't listen. He should have begged.

It goes without saying that Stephanie Plum is in there. She is apparently in an on-again with Morelli, sleeps in bed every night with Diesel (no sex, of course) and yet still relies completely on Ranger to always find her and keep her safe.

Diesel. Diesel is cute, sexy and funny. He needs his own world. Janet should have argued more with her publisher on this. Quite honestly, Plum does not need a third alpha male.

I have a suggestion for you, Janet Evanovich. Take your old Plum books off the shelf. Starting with One for The Money - read them. Then go back into your office and write.

When the next Plum book is released and I take it off the bookstore shelf, I want the pages between the front and back cover to be filled with the great Plum writing that I loved. The stuff that earned you that best selling status. I want a great book.

Plum Spooky is silly, slapstick nonsense. It might appeal to a lot of readers. If you like silly slapstick, the three stooges and stuff like pull my finger jokes, you will love this.

But is it the Plum that I have know and loved for years? No it is not. Doesn't even come close. It's juvenile and drivel.

Simply put, this was the last Plum book I will read until I get to read reviews that tell me that the nonsense and slapstick is over and the World of Plum as I knew and loved it is back.

Desperately Seeking Stephanie
By samurai_sally
I admit it. I am a Ranger fan. I look forward to each book hoping to learn more about him. Some books have more Ranger in them than others, but I'm an addict and I'll take what I can get. When it comes to literary heroes, I've never been as smitten as I am with Ranger. He trumps even Jane Austen's Mr. Darcy.

But no matter how much I love Ranger, I am first and foremost a Stephanie fan. She came onto the scene, armed with mascara and attitude, and I couldn't help but root for her. I wanted Stephanie to succeed, to get everything she ever dared dream, and I wanted to be there to see it when she did. Ranger may be my romantic fantasy, but Stephanie Plum is my hero.

Plum Spooky did not sit well with me. I didn't hate it, but I didn't like it, either. In a week's time, I doubt I'll remember anything about it. (I can't remember much about it now.) It wasn't romantic or funny or witty. I didn't walk away feeling empowered or uplifted, like I used to do after a Plum book. In fact, I didn't walk away feeling anything at all...except maybe a little sad.

Some people are angry about the money, $30 for a book they felt wasn't worth it. Others are angry about the content, Diesel and fart jokes and monkeys. Those are both valid and reasonable complaints regarding this book. But what I was most disappointed with was Stephanie. This is her story. These books revolve around her. They don't work without her.

So where was she?

I know there are a lot of people who either think Stephanie should get married already and pop out a few kids, or on the flip side, train to be an assassin. I don't care for either of those scenarios. Neither mesh with the spirited bounty hunter we've grown to love, and you know what? I like Stephanie. I don't want her to change. I want her to grow and I want her to develop, but I don't want her to change. At her core, she's a kind-hearted, loving, resilient person whose mistakes and flaws make her human. What is there to fix?

The last several books have tampered with that, though. Her character hasn't grown or developed. It has withered under the weight of guilt and obligation. This character who used to admit freely (to us, anyway) that she had feelings for two men, has suppressed that honesty in favor of a politically correct (and fanbase pacifying) beauty queen speech. It isn't that she sincerely feels one way or another, but more accurately, that she thinks she should. And that has allowed her character (and the series) to stagnate.

Part of the the problem is her relationship with Joe Morelli. The difference between Morelli and Ranger is that Morelli is the person he will always be, both good and bad. Ranger, on the other hand, may not be relationship material right now, but he's still evolving, a character trait he shares with Stephanie. It doesn't take much to imagine what a life with Morelli would entail - messy house, messy kids, family dinner, Bob the Dog, and an SUV - but is that who Stephanie is, or is that who Morelli wants/needs her to be for their relationship to work? Before she settles down with either guy, I want to see Stephanie learn to accept and love herself. But for that to happen, Evanovich will have to take Stephanie out of her comfort zone and let her form her own shape before she tries to force her into some prefabricated mold of what a Burg wife "should" be.

When I close the last book in the series, I don't want to be plagued with nightmares of Stephanie ending up a stereotypical Burg wife like her mother, or worse, like Angie Morelli, Joe's sister in law. I want the satisfaction of knowing that whatever she got, it was exactly what she wanted, and she worked hard to get it. There may have been setbacks, but there were NO substitutions.

But when I read a book like this, the fourth book in a row that has made no progress whatsoever in the development of the three main characters, I can't help but wonder, what the hell happened?

LOL PLUM FUNNY but Enough Carl...Please
By Chrissy
I am a HUGE Janet fan. But by chapter 8 I was about ready to take out Carl the Monkey myself. Enough with the monkey giving everyone the bird! I did not find it funny when he keeps doing it over and over and over.
Carl a side... I love the Plum books.
I do not look at the Between the Numbers books as "real". I think of them as Stephanie's dreams. They are not realistic for a reason. There is a "magical" tone in them. Diesel just popping in out of no where and such...like magic.
These are NOT like the number books.
Not that the number books are realistic either but they are not like the in betweens. I hope this makes sense. I think some people think they are the same when I read their reviews.
Take the in betweens for what they are. Entertainment while we wait for the next number book to be released. As fun as ever! ENJOY!
Something that has me upset is the book should be a small version book like the other betweens and not a full size edition. It looks like the font and spacing are to big for the book. I feel like they just wanted to get more money out of the readers. They are really pushing it by saying this is a full sized book. It was not worth $16 for the amount of reading material.

From Publishers Weekly
Coleridge's latest (after Godchildren) is a lengthy, elaborate skewering of contemporary Britain's wealthy movers and shakers that, while funny and smartly conceived, could stand to lose a good 150 pages. Miles Straker is handsome, wealthy and enormously connected as chairman and CEO of his own public relations firm. When on-the-rise grocery chain owner Ross Clegg secures a plot of land abutting Miles's country seat, Chawbury Manor, and erects a monstrosity of a home, the gauntlet is thrown. While Ross's company grows by leaps and bounds and begins to challenge Miles's top client's market share, the Clegg family worms its way into the Chawbury social scene. Such threats to the upper-crust status quo are not taken lightly, and all-out Straker-Clegg family entanglement ensues. The novel bears all the trappings of a well-crafted social satire—delightfully loathsome characters, romantic intrigue of the most sordid kind, a keen eye for the ever-important details of appearance—but as the narrative progresses, the ever-increasing chains of coincidences and shifts of allegiance begin to feel like a piling-on. Sometimes less is more. (Feb.)

Pleasant prose, summer read
By PenQuiltPixel
This is my first Nicholas Coleridge novel and I'm pleased enough to reserve a couple of his earlier works from the library. However, the novel is frustrating in its simplistic tone and ideas. About half way through I started getting edgy waiting for the comeuppance - or some arc, some transformation of someone. I had to put it down for this reason and return to it a few days later. Throughout, though, the good stay good and the bad unrelentingly bad. This made the book a mildly amusing summer fantasy read, with some charm, however.

I did enjoy his natural, easy hand on the characters themselves. The straightforward descriptive sentences lent a nice, pleasant humour to the book and I found I wanted to keep spending time even with people I didn't (and wasn't meant to) like. Which is why I did keep thinking about the story and the people even when I took a break from reading.

The end was mildly disappointing. It felt two abrupt in length, though everything got properly resolved. This happened in the last twenty or so pages of a nearly five hundred page book. I think more effort could have been put in this area.

Four stars because my walk-away feeling was of pleasant enjoyment.

PR World Right On the Mark
By Julia A. Andrews
My Brit husband has a formidable task of purchasing books for me for holiday or other special times that I have not read. Granted, he could check my Amazon Account but that would not include outside purchases, gifts from others or books borrowed from friends.

He knows I have an affinity for Julian Fellowes' Snobs and Past Imperfect: A Novel so, with fingers crossed, he gave this to me at Christmas. No, it did not have the gossipy style with strong, realistic characters of a Fellowes' multi-layered work. Still I found this to be an entertaining read especially with the lead character being in British PR as had my now retired husband. There were many PR people and instances that were right on the nose. My husband read the book after I finished it and could not believe its uncanny parallel to PR reality. Thank God my husband was no Milo!

This is a light, enjoyable read with the characters who never deviate from their good or bad personas. The storyline is predictable but likeable. The synopsis has been well detailed by other reviewers so I won't repeat it here.

I enjoyed his book enough to check out his older works and will look for newer novels on the Amazon UK site.

All in all a 3.5 Star experience.

Enjoy the read!
