I'm enjoying the television version of Crosswords and this collection of crossword puzzles doesn't disappoint. I've already ordered and received #2 and #3 and look forward to working them when I've finished #1. They are worth the money to me.

Good Puzzles

These are easy puzzles, all with themes. They are not for grade school-level solvers, they do make you think. But, they can be solved, they are not too tough. I thoroughly enjoyed them.

These are not easy and hard to read

I purchased this because I like to do easy Crossword Puzzles when I am waiting, or am out somewhere. These puzzles are not easy. Also, the print is very small making them hard to read. If you want easy puzzles about popular culture, go to PEOPLE MAGAZINE'S PUZZLE BOOK.

Grade 9 Up—For as long as she can remember, Jess has been friends with Bizza and Char. Lately, however, she has been finding that she doesn't have as much in common with them. She has become more interested in math and sewing, while the other two girls only seem interested in partying and hanging around Jess's older brother and his punk band. On their first day of sophomore year, Jess finds that her old friends have decided to go punk. In Bizza's case, this involves shaving her head and pursuing Jess's longtime crush, punk Van, and eventually performing oral sex on him at a party (contracting gonorrhea in the process). Jess decides to move on and becomes involved with a group of Dungeons and Dragons players that includes her new romantic interest, nerdy but adorable Henry. She agonizes over being called a nerd, but comes to realize that friends and how they treat each other are more important than labels. Halpern's descriptions of high-school cliques, particularly the punk posers and the D&D fanatics, are hilarious and believable, and characters who seem to fit particular stereotypes suddenly show unexpected traits. Halpern puts the "h" in Hilarious

It's Jessie's sophomore year of high school, and all the wrong things in her life are changing. While her hair is still brown, straight, and boring, her friends are nearly unrecognizable as punk poseurs and her older brother has shaved off his Mohawk and traded his punk band scene for dating last year's Prom Princess. When Jessie's supposed best friend goes too far with Jessie's long-time curst, Jessie finally has enough. She decides she needs new friends. In an attempt to discover the social niche she fits into, Jessie unexpectedly finds herself hanging out with the Dungeons and Dragons crowd. Sure, Jessie has always loved math and rather enjoyed studying, but does she really want to actually be declared a nerd by adopting these role players as her new friends? Is there any way to recover from being nerdiest of them all--and does Jessie even want to?

I fell in love with Halpern's witty and utterly true to life writing in Get Well Soon and was thrilled to see it continue in the cleverly titled Into the Wild Nerd Yonder. Halpern has a talent for portraying adolescent social situations in a way most readers will be able to relate to. I couldn't believe at times how accurate Halpern was in her analysis of high school cliques, particularly the popular crowd; she includes little facts I thought no one else thought about. It also helps that Jessie is such a likable character, not only for her sense of humor and other quirky traits, but also because she has to deal with teen year crises such as best friends turning into disloyal strangers, a protective and beloved older brother going away to college soon, and confusion and self-doubt over liking and fitting in with people she used to negatively label as "nerds" and "dorks." And Halpern accomplishes all this with a sweet and laugh-out-loud hilarious story. The minor characters are somewhat less developed than they could be, but this can be easily overlooked in the bigger picture. Into the Wild Nerd Yonder is without a doubt a very enjoyable read, successful in showing the difficulty in forgetting the imaginary constructs labels are for many teens, and that life without conformity and labels is generally much sweeter.

Into the Wild Nerd Yonder is the perfect read for any teen who's ever felt underappreciated or questioned their position in whichever social clique, or just anyone looking for a funny and inspirational read to cheer them up. Readers who liked Halpern's Get Well Soon will also love Into the Wild Nerd Yonder, as will fans of The ABC's of Kissing Boys by Tina Ferraro, A Little Friendly Advice and Same Difference by Siobhan Vivian, King of the Screwups by K.L. Going, and Alive and Well in Prague, New York by Daphne Grab.

Rare YA book

A rare YA book - the main character and her brother are neither hostile to each other nor engaged in self-destructive behavior, and both parents are present and supportive (in fact, Jessie, Barrett, and the Sloan parents are a welcome reprieve from the array of depressing families crowding YA fiction). Jessie's not my favorite character ever, but I like her witty, conversational voice. She's certainly a believable teenager - always wondering what others think of her superior math skills, or worried about the likely drop in her social standing if she leaves the punk "poseurettes" to befriend nerds and band geeks. And she's way too preoccupied with a guy she knows is a jerk but likes anyway.

Fortunately, none of that actually stops her from acing honors English and precalc, spending her time sewing cute skirts while her inconsiderate friends stalk older boys, or finally drifting away from said toxic friends to try new things and new people.

Also, I can relate to visiting D&D sessions and having NO idea what's going on.

Adorable YA romance

I loved this book because the voice was very realistic. A smart kid who is struggling to find herself yet is not really deluded by the shenanigans of others around her. A couple of friends who show their true colors as users. A family that loves each other and talks to each other, and kids who are trustworthy and trusted by their parents. We often get so wrapped up in our dysfunctions as a society we forget that normalcy is really out there, lol! And this book was refreshing to me because it showed me a slice of that.

I loved how our protagonist is in a caring family with realistic interactions. I was strongly reminded of my own experiences growing up--especially the older brother with whom she gets along so incredibly well. All too often, it seems to me, YA books portray siblings as adversarial and snarky, when my personal experience and observations have been that most families have a strong bond and care about each other. So this story is a refreshing one.

The one quibble some might have is that there is a bit of cussing in this book. I consider this book only mildly blue-tinted in comparison to actual teen speak; but I felt the language worth a mention for some others who are particular in that regard.

A fast read, and an enjoyable and heartwarming one!

About the Author

Mishna Wolff was one of the 2009 Sundance Screenwriting Lab fellows. She is a humorist and former model, who grew up in Seattle. She lives and writes in New York City.

Humorist and former model Wolff details her childhood growing up in an all-black Seattle neighborhood with a white father who wanted to be black in this amusing memoir. Wolff never quite fit in with the neighborhood kids, despite her father's urgings that she make friends with the sisters on the block. Her father was raised in a similar neighborhood and—after a brief stint as a hippie in Vermont—returned to Seattle and settled into life as a self-proclaimed black man. Wolff and her younger, more outgoing sister, Anora, are taught to embrace all things black, just like their father and his string of black girlfriends. Just as Wolff finds her footing in the local elementary school (after having mastered the art of capping: think yo mama jokes), her mother, recently divorced from her father and living as a Buddhist, decides to enroll Wolff in the Individual Progress Program, a school for gifted children. Once again, Wolff finds herself the outcast among the wealthy white kids who own horses and take lavish vacations. While Wolff is adept at balancing humorous memories with more poignant moments of a daughter trying to earn her father's admiration, the result is more a series of vignettes than a cohesive memoir. Best Memoir I've Read Since "Liar's Club"

What a great book! Fun, moving, and with a really unexpected ending. Though the promo material highlights her childhood as a white girl in a black neighborhood, this memoir is a more sophisticated story--and more universal story -- of a child who can't find her place in her family. And the most moving aspect of this book is her success in finding a place in the world, and what it ultimately costs her. Yes, it's heartbreaking in places, but it's hysterical in others and most importantly -- the story is compelling. I literally couldn't put this book down and I have the circles under my eyes to prove it.

This semi-autobiograpical memoir is really great airplane food!

Wow, apart from a bird identification book, this is the very first amazon vine product that I might have purchased in 'real life' and I'm happy to say that this is definitely a worthwhile acquisition.
Before we begin let's establish what this book is not: It is not hilarious or tragic as a cover blurb indicates. It is also not, strictly speaking, truly autobiographical as the author declaims up front something to the effect that many of the things in the book might never have happened and that she uses composites of characters to represent distinct personalities in her story.
What this book is is a very charming, often poignant, quite incisive, well-told story based on the remembrances of a caucasian woman whose childhood was spent living in a deteriorating Seattle neighborhood with a father who chose to 'go black.'
Interestingly, it is also a real testimonial to the quality and effectiveness of the the Seattle public school system and civic organizations in their efforts to provide opportunities to its most promising albeit less privileged (read wealthy) chidren.
The story revolves around a white girl who, along with her younger sister remain in the custody of her ne'er do well father who has fashioned himself a black man in a white man's body. They live in an urban Seattle neighborhood which has become predominantly black; a change that the girls' father revels in.
The author does a wonderful job of describing the struggles and triumphs she experiences as she struggles with the multiple challenges of adolescence; parental divorce; racial comity, difference and divide; and familial and peer group strife.
A really great thing about the book is that the author is able to give insightful analysis of the dynamics of the unfolding tale as if she was fully cognizant of them as a little girl. Of course the picture only became clear to her later, in adulthood, which is undoubtedly why she makes her disclaimer about the events depicted in the book.
Ms. Wolff knows how to spin a story and once you begin this book I doubt that you will want to put it down until you have finished it.
I began reading it on a flight from the West Coast to the East coast and found the book to be the perfect length for this journey as I got through the first third on the first leg and finished up the rest just as we were making the approach to land on the second leg: Brilliant!
You will definitely become emotionally invested in this book and I recommend it as a very satisfying entertainment that is better than mere candy or a popcorn movie.

A Hard Book to Rate

This book is hard to rate because although I am African-American I had similar experiences as Mishna Wolff. The insult some of the reviewers feel is that the author is a white woman who experienced what many of us wish were "stereotypes"; however, in reality they do exist in the African-American community. I guess I can relate to the author's experiences because I was a child who not only had no athletic ability, liked to read encyclopedias, had no rhythm (a no-no), couldn't jump rope (that no rhythm curse) and hated fighting. I spent many days wanting to play with children my own age, but didn't want to be drawn into a fight or insulted. As a child, I did begin to befriend white children who did not like to fight and insult, but I received much flack about their friendships from my family. They actually preferred me to have friends who were black, even if they were mean.

I believe the author tried to soften the story with the impression that her experiences had more to do with economics. She wrote about her father's girlfriend, who was a nurse, who the author seems to feel was the most positive role model. She was much different than the other girlfriends and even the author's mother. She also tried to soften her impressions of African-Americans by giving examples of her white classmates who had very dysfunctional lives despite their luxurious lives.

The problems with the book are the following:
a. The author doesn't have any experiences (which she cared to divulge) with poor white people. Actually she doesn't have experiences with any white people besides her class and sports team mates, teachers, coaches, her parents and a brief mention of her uncle during a wedding. White people are mysteriously absent during her life,
b. The author ends the book abruptly during her junior high school years. We have no idea what her high school experience was and what happened during her hormone-induced teenage years,
c. We don't know how her sister faired. Her sister was comfortable with the neighborhood children and went to school within the community.

The oddest part of the book was not the community where she was raised but her parents. I don't care what a person's socio-economic status happens to be, parents still want the best for their children. Her father seemed intent on interfering with any attempt the author made to better her life. I also believe there was more to the dissolution of her parent's marriage since her father, who was obviously neglectful, to receive custody. There are some skeletons in the closet that the author doesn't seem to want to divulge or doesn't know.
Overall, I guess the author exposes the angst of being helpless in a dysfunctional family and not fitting, which is not that uncommon with children. Her excuse for her oddness was that she just was in the wrong neighborhood. It was hard to accept that a white woman was exposing a few of the bad aspects of growing up in the African-American community. However, I had to put my ego aside and be non-judgmental because she was only writing about her experiences and perceptions. I guess the objection to this book is that many blacks don't fit the stereotypes. Rather than be upset, we should be happy that we have transcended those behaviors and teach the positive behaviors to our children.

I can only give it three stars because the ending was abrupt and didn't describe her high school and college years.

Excellent, as with most NY Times Sunday Cryptograms. I just wonder why I was sent two offers to review for a single purchase. For this, and many other, reasons I think the programs of the Amazon computation system are in drastic need of overhaul.

A collection of Sunday Crossword Puzzles from the New York Times

Nothing fancy here; just a collection of 50 puzzles from the Sunday edition of the New York Times Crossword section.

The NYT's Sunday Crosswords have become my crossword puzzle of choice, so getting some extra puzzles to do while awaiting the next regular Sunday installment, was greatly appreciated. The Sunday puzzles are my favorite because these puzzles have a theme, e.i. several answers will be either be longer words or phrases that have some interesting word-play or maybe a devious connection between them.

This volume (# 34) encompasses puzzles originally published between Aug 03 to July 04 and, I believe, they are presented chronologically.

This is an ideal book for anyone who has just recently started doing the NYT's Sunday Crosswords and wants to 'catch up' on older puzzles. It's also a great item to take on a trip or vacation; it's light weight and thin, making it easy to pack and carry with you.

Conclusion:
50 additional NYT's Sunday Crossword puzzles. Tough but fair puzzles that make you think. 5 Stars.

MORE THAN ENTERTAINMENT

Devoting some time to the NYT crosswords is as much a part of the daily exercise routine as is the treadmill and the stationary bike---I suppose all forms add to the healthy neural connections in the brain, but these puzzles are explicitly aimed in the cranial direction, and believe me at age 81, this is no small potatoes thing !

Grade 10 Up–When Zoe's teacher mispronounces her name on the first day of class, the 17-year-old explodes. To teachers and administrators, she is just another rebellious teenager. Not even her friends know or understand the depth of her emotional stress. Caring for an alcoholic mother, dealing with an overbearing grandmother, going to school, and working to make ends meet all collide and Zoe finally walks out. She finds solace in a small rented room on Lorelei Street and discovers a new friend in Opal, her eccentric elderly landlord. Throughout the novel, Zoe struggles with her feelings for Mama, which swing from hatred to guilt to longing; thoughts about her father, whose accidental death may have been suicide; and her need for attention, which has resulted in numerous sexual relationships. Unable to make enough money at her waitressing job to pay the rent, Zoe finds that she will do anything–no matter how self-destructive–to keep her safe haven. For her, the rented room represents an escape from an impossible situation, a break from suffocating family bonds that gives her the impetus to start a new life. The third-person narration is at times lyrical, vividly expressing the teen's feelings and motivations. Since she feels alone, she wants to be alone, abdicating all responsibility for anyone other than herself. She rents a room in an old house on Lorelei Street, a neighborhood as charming as her landlady, Opal. Her waitress job at Murray's and Opal's generosity hold promise for her survival on her own, but Zoe can't seem to overcome her penchant for bad academic and economic decisions, choosing inappropriate comments to a teacher over stoicism, and cigarettes over food and gas for the car. Ultimately, survival wins, but not without incredible pain inflicted on Zoe, her family, and her friends. Pearson paints a compelling portrait of a teen, easily recognizable to most YAs, who is simultaneously intent on survival and self-sabotage. Frances Bradburn

more than just a room

Zoe is determined not to be like her mother. So she sets out on her own and rents a room in an attempt to get away from the things that drag her down...then she becomes that which she despises.

This happens so often in families. Kids are always saying "I'm not going to be anything like my parents." Yet, that's what they know, so that's what they become. And most don't even know it.

The real beauty of this story is that Zoe sees what she's become, acknowledges it, then takes steps to change. She's heading into the unknown, and has no idea whether she'll be okay. But she takes comfort in knowing that this is the right direction.

Such a stunning and courageous message to send to kids. Well done, Ms. Pearson.

Richie's Picks: A ROOM ON LORELEI STREET

"All I know is something like a bird within her sang,

" 'You going to stand there, or you going to come up and take a look?'

"Zoe jumps, her cigarette tumbling from her fingers into the gutter. Pay stubs and figures disappear from her vision, and she focuses on the person who appeared out of nowhere. A brown grocery bag is in her arms.

" 'Excuse me?' she says to the wild-haired woman she saw in the garden five days ago.

" 'I've seen you here three or four times now. Guessed you were checking out the neighborhood. You must've figured out by now that we don't have any roving gangs around here--a couple folks whose cheese has slid off their cracker but that's about it. So, you ready to see the room?'

"Zoe thinks the old lady's voice doesn't match her attitude. She is assertive, almost snippy, confident in a crazy, old-woman way, but she is smiling, and her voice is soft, lyrical. It reminds Zoe of a bird.

I'm a sucker for cool old ladies in children's and YA literature. No, not just in literature. I also love knowing cool old ladies in the real world. One of my best friends is a cool old lady who raises Nubian dairy goats up in the Sierra foothills.

I think it all goes back to having had some really great teachers in junior high and high school who were of my parents' generation and who taught me so much about life and about their lives from a perspective that was different than what I'd gotten from my own parents. And it must similarly come from growing up working on my dad's construction jobs with all those old tradesmen to listen to. Those lessons continued into my post-adolescence when I returned to school in my thirties to study early childhood education (where I was usually the only guy in the class) and was taken under wing by a wise veteran teacher: an amazingly cool old lady named Teri Isaac.

Last year when I reviewed TENDING TO GRACE, in which a very cool Great-aunt Agatha helps Cornelia find her voice, I mentioned some other cool old ladies I've adored in books:

Not long after reviewing TENDING TO GRACE I got to meet Mrs. Elia Hurd in LIZZIE BRIGHT AND THE BUCKMINSTER BOY. She's definitely another one for the list. (I'd sure love to know her entire life story.)

"The lady rummages through her pocket for the key. 'I still have a few things in there, but I can take them out if they don't ka-nish with your ka-nash.' She slides the key into the lock, and the door swings open."

This particular cool old lady is Opal Keats. The room in that house on Lorelei Street that seventeen-year-old Zoe Beth Buckman subsequently rents from Opal is a dream come true for the girl, given what life at home with her alcoholic mother has been. But this is by no means a sweet fairy tale.

Following step by step (or mis-step) on Zoe's path, I can't help but feel the pressure in my own chest as I experience this young woman's determination to make the personal finances work out so that she can both maintain the control and security that the room on Lorelei Street provides her and simultaneously try to fill her stomach and gas tank, pay the transportation fee necessary for being on the tennis team, and cover the million other expenses that unexpectedly arise when Zoe is finally on her own and determined to keep it that way at any cost. A Bleak and Gripping Story, with Streaks of Hope

Mary E. Pearson's A Room on Lorelei Street is gripping and well-written, a bleak story with streaks of hope. A Room on Lorelei Street is the story of Zoe, a 17-year-old girl burdened by a difficult family. Her father is dead, under somewhat mysterious circumstances, and her mother pretty much lives inside the bottle. Her beloved younger brother has been sent away to live with a more stable aunt and uncle, who have no room for Zoe, while Zoe is left to care for her irresponsible and needy mother.

One day Zoe sees a sign advertising a room for rent in a gracious home on Lorelei Street. She is unable to resist the lure of getting away from her mother, and of being in a place that's all her own, clean and quiet and safe. She rents the room (more of a studio apartment) from the quirky but kind Opal, and finds it everything she has dreamed of. However the ties of family and guilt are not so easy to break, and Zoe struggles with continuing demands from her family. She also struggles financially, not really able to afford living on her own while working part time while attending high school. But she's not willing to go back, either.

This book made me think about all of the things that I took for granted growing up: clean clothes, abundant food, parents to attend any plays or recitals that I was in, siblings who lived in the same house. Zoe is painfully in need of someone to care about her, to put her needs first, to be what family is supposed to be. When Opal attends one of her tennis matches and cheers for her, it brings tears to Zoe's eyes. She considers it the nicest thing that anyone has ever done for her. How sad is that? How many kids are there who have no one to care about them?

The ways in which Zoe acts out are not surprising, given her background, and are treated matter-of-factly by the author. The looming menace of what she will or won't do to earn money to afford her Lorelei Street haven is more disturbing. Toward the end of the book, things get increasingly difficult for Zoe, and the fragile ties tethering her to the community snap one by one. What keeps Zoe going are a few precious memories of her father's belief in her potential, and her own unquenchable sense of possibility.

Zoe is a strong character, a teenage girl facing situations far beyond her years. Her landlady, Opal, is delightful, glowing with enthusiasm, despite the hardships in her life. The small, depressed town of Ruby, Texas is almost a character in the book, too. Ruby is beaten down and insular, without much economic potential, but the stars still shine overhead. And there are still beautiful rooms on Lorelei Street.

This is a book that will make you think. About the connections between people. About what kids need from their parents. About what makes some people keep going, while others give up. About where responsibilities to family end, and responsibility to self beings. Mary Pearson's writing is spare and elegant, with just enough detail to make the scenes pictured painfully clear. I think that it will particularly resonate with teenagers, male or female, struggling to find their place in the world.

A Room on Lorelei Street won the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators Golden Kite Award for fiction published in 2005. This is the only major children's book award given by the writer's peers.

Snack Food for the Gossip-Hungry Reader

Well, Leigh made have promised her publisher that she would not do a "warmed over" treatment of her subject, but that is exactly how this book comes across. She is proud to make the point that she interviewed over a hundred new sources who were willing to speak on the record about Grace, and even prouder of the fact that she was able to disclose fifteen of her sexual affairs that had never been made public before. (As if that matters.) There were only a few revelations here that caught my attention, like the fact that Grace had a tumble with the husband of one of her bridesmaids and then confessed all--leading to the complete decline of that poor woman's life--and a discussion of the extremely cruel side of Alfred Hitchcock's personality. There was virtually no discussion about Grace's death and too little examination of her complicated relationships with Rainier and the children. Also, there are regrettably few pictures in this book, most of them being publicity shots.

Finally, there is too much emphasis on what seems to be extraneous. One appendix is devoted to Grace's horoscope, and another concentrates on analyzing her handwriting. Leigh also emphasizes in an epilogue about writing the book that she stayed in many of the same hotels that Grace once did, allowing her to "experience and understand her world." But did that contribute to a better book? I don't think so. For a much deeper look into the life of this beloved but controversial princess, read Randy Taraborrelli's 2003 work, Once Upon a Time.

A Good Book

The book does have the glaring mistake that the other reader mentions--referring to Aristotle Onassis's divorce from Jackie Kennedy--and that will surely be corrected in the paperback version. Probably the author meant to convey that the couple may have been thinking about divorce when Onassis became ill and passed away. The impressive thing about the book is how well documented it all is and how candid Wendy Leigh is about explaining her sources both in endnotes and in an essay/appendix on her sources. She even says that novelist Graham Greene believed that Princess Grace was murdered. This is recounted in one of the lengthier chapter endnotes and somewhat discounted by Leigh (since Greene's nephew said the author had never mentioned it to him). But it is interesting and surprising, and the fact that it got relegated to an easy-to-miss endnote shows that the writer and publisher have some put some restraint on the sensational claims.

I have read many of the other books about Grace Kelly, and Leigh's book does mostly fulfill its aim (and promise to publisher Thomas Dunne) of not just warming over previously published material. She's thorough in that way, but much of this new material concerns lengthening the list of Grace Kelly's likely lovers. Leigh also resists repeating things that previous writers have covered, such as GK's acting in summer stock theater in Colorado, her relationships with Gene Lyons and Mark Miller, well-documented things like that. If this were the only book a person read on Grace Kelly, the reader might get a view of her recklessness that outweighed her other traits and talents. Reading Robert Lacey's book or James Spada's along with this one would furnish a more balanced view.

True Grace: Truely Great

Wendy Leigh's fearless and penetrating biography of Grace Kelly's life was as riveting to read as it was thought provoking. While Ms. Leigh artfully conjures a bygone era and captures your imagination with old Hollywood lore, the parallels between Grace Kelly and the tabloid princcesses of today make True Grace constantly relevant. Ms. Leigh writes with great affection for HSH of Monaco, but is never obsequious. Ms. Leigh approaches her subject with the integrity of a journalist seeking the truth. She is not afraid of being controversial, but she is never sensationalist. Ms. Leigh engages you with a style of writing that is at once intelligent, witty and even flirtatious, making True Grace extremely enjoyable to read. Notably, there is always an underlying understanding in Ms. Leigh's tone that intimates the reader to Grace Kelly and prevents one from being too quick to judge her. I finished the book with a crisp idea of an era and a woman that, though long before my time, I was able to identify with. This is all down to Ms. Leigh's canny portrayal of Grace Kelly. I sincerely recommend this book.

Don't believe the un-hype

Hey, I found this book really useful as a complement to Rick Steves book - you need both. The maps in the back were fantastic and accurate; the listings (unlike other books) were by arrondissement, which is really helpful, and it had great patisserie/boulangerie recommendations. Get both books.

Let's Go...to the bookstore and buy another guide book!

I had used one of the "Let's Go" books on a previous trip to Europe (in 2000) and remembered it being informative and helpful for youngish people traveling on a budget, so after quickly looking through guide books at the bookstore I decided to give Let's Go Paris 2007 a shot for my trip to Paris this summer. I soon regretted that decision. Here are my top complaints:

-In general, the information is disjointed and poorly organized. Food, Sights, Museums, Entertainment, Nightlife, Shopping, etc. all have their own categories, which is not helpful when you're in one area, trying to find multiple things to do. I was constantly flipping back and forth between the many sections, and it wasn't always clear where to look. For example, is "Invalides" a "sight" or a "museum"? What about the Pasteur Institute? And where can I eat nearby? Are there other attractions worth visiting near here? Flip, flip, flip. Also, the maps (more on those shortly) are all in the back, in the index. What I wished for, while standing on the street corner trying to hold five pages at once while my husband plotted things on the map (in the Index!), was an all-inclusive section for each arrondissement, with the map of that arrondissement in that section. Another reviewer mentioned that this problem was resolved in the 2007 edition, but my copyright date reads 2007 and the subdivision pest lives on.

-The maps themselves are terrible. They're small, and not in chronological order by arrondissement (it breaks down after the eighth when they go 9th & 18th, 10th, 12th, 11th, 13th, 15th, 14th, 16th, 17th, 19th, 20th), and the map of the 15th was so tiny it was practically useless. On the map of the 20th it actually says, "See Père Lachaise map p. XXX." The page number is listed as XXX. Unbelievable. I was so frustrated that I almost purchased a "Paris Pratique" while I was there.

-At least one restaurant reviewed ("Le 36" in the 8th) did not exist once we walked 45 minutes to get there. That was unpleasant.

-Almost all listed admissions prices were wrong. If it said 6,50 E, we just counted on it being 7,50. It said a carnet of 10 Metro tickets was 9,60. It was 10,80. Again, this was issued in 2007.

-There are things listed in the book that are not in the Index (so it's almost impossible to find them again if you haven't marked the page) and things in the Index that are not in the book.

-While I found the cultural information and historical sections in the beginning to be generally interesting and useful, I was annoyed when trying to figure out postage rates and found the following on p. 48 "...the standard postage system whose rates are listed below," but there was nothing listed below. My husband and I read and reread the section, baffled, and there were no postage rates listed anywhere.

After a week, this book became that unreliable friend that you can no longer trust so you just stop trying. We resorted to looking up restaurants, maps, and attractions on the Internet, but not everyone visiting Paris has easy access to an Internet connection. I'm giving it 2 stars only because some of the information was helpful, but I would strongly advise looking into another guide book. I will not purchase any Let's Go publications again. Ever.

The new edition is GREAT!!!

So, I agree completely with everyone's cranky reviews of Let's Go: Paris 05. As it turns out, they've completely redone quite a bit for the 07 edition, and I found it quite accessible and useful. They've totally reorganized the Entertainment, Food, and Nightlife sections so that they're all by arrondissement: no more of the idiotic subdivisions. Plus, all the information in the chapter is in a handy table on each chapter's opening page, so you can really do a fast find if you need to.

Plus, the maps have improved tenfold. They've got the "Paris by Arrondissement" map as well as a map that breaks the city down into cultural areas, and ones that highlight suggested itineraries.

Bottom line: 07 is incredible. I've seen Lonely Planet, Frommers, etc., and LG is the way to go.
