Eleanor Trewynn has spent years all over the globe, helping the poor through an organization called the London Committee to Save the Starving. Widowed and ready to roost back home, she settles into a fictional village in Cornwall. This time out, murder enters her life yet again when a young artist, neighbor, and friend, Nick Gresham, returns from a trip to discover that his studio has been broken into, sculptures broken, and paintings slashed. Gresham is convinced a jealous local artist destroyed his work. He rushes to the artist's studio only to find him stabbed in the back. Suspicion falls on Gresham, and, predictably, Eleanor works with the local police and her detective-sergeant niece to clear him. Worn plot lines and a bit fey in the writing, but wonderful Cornish and cozy atmosphere carry the day. --Connie Fletcher

pleasant reading, but...

Like its predecessor, the second book in the Cornish series by Carola Dunn is a pleasant read, with nice characters, interesting setting and good writing. What lacks is a plausible mystery solution. I find it frustrating when I can identify the murderer at the death scene; I want more from a mystery than well-written dialogue. If Carola Dunn could plot this series as well as she does her Daisy Dalrymple books, it would make for a great new series.

transparent plot

The story takes place in present day fictional village Port Mabyn on the north coast of Cornwall. It is a cozy and amusing story, with lots of tea and lots of pasties. The characters are realistic except for the murderer.

The first corpse is found on page 26, and by page 28 whodunit is obvious. Also there are certain threads that are begun but not followed through. Very disappointing.

Definitely Not Up to Dunn's Normal Standard

I really enjoy Carola Dunn's Daisy Dalrymple Mysteries and the first book in her Cornish Mystery series, Manna from Hades: A Cornish Mystery, introduced characters with room to grow in a setting and time period I found rather unique. Even though I didn't completely love Manna From Hades, I enjoyed it enough to be looking forward to reading its sequel. Now, having read it, all I can say is: Wow - I don't believe I've ever read a mystery that so completely disappointed me.

I had a strong inkling as to who the murderer was before the murder was committed (!!!) and through the rest of the story there wasn't a single plot twist or even a good, old-fashioned red herring to make me doubt my conclusion (which was correct). While many people may read mysteries simply because they like certain detectives (amateur or otherwise), I don't think it's much of a stretch to say that there are at least an equal number who want to put their own detecting skills to use and hope to be challenged by a clever murderer and a well-planned crime. Unfortunately, neither of those types of mystery readers will be satisfied with this story. The murderer is one-dimensional and truly beyond stupid and Dunn doesn't come through with any interesting character developments among the main characters to help offset the failure of the mystery component.

I KNOW Carola Dunn can do better because I've read much of her other work. But this was such a let down that I may not give a third Cornish Mystery a chance (should there be one). I will, however, stick with Daisy.

About the Author

WILD BLUE is one of the books in a new series called the Breyer Horse Collection. According to a letter that opens the book, this fiction series is designed to help readers learn about and appreciate different breeds of horses along with their history and characteristics. This collection is sure to be a success with middle grade readers who love horses or are just looking for an enjoyable wildlife adventure.

Blue is a wild mustang appaloosa. At two years old she has only known life in the wilds of Idaho. Living with her small band of wild horses, she is used to wide-open spaces and the freedom to roam without the interference of mankind.

One afternoon a pony is caught in a snare trap, and Blue and her sister, Doe, watch helplessly. A sudden thunderstorm and torrential rain complicate the situation, making escape impossible. Two cowboys show up, but instead of rescuing the struggling horse, they use ropes to capture Blue and her sister. The fear-stricken horses are loaded into a trailer and taken from the only home they've ever known.

What follows is a terrifying ordeal seen through the eyes of Blue the wild mustang. She experiences men for the first time, as well as captivity, the modern mechanical world, and things she never knew existed. No matter how frightening her world becomes, she stays focused on one thing only - escape. More than anything she wants to return to Idaho and life with her herd.

Annie Wedekind captures the essence of the wild mustang. In the beginning, she creates a vivid picture of the free life of the wild horse. From the days when Kenya was a colony

In a way, the title character Alice de Janzés is only a pretext for telling a story about British colonization of Kenya. Against lyrical descriptions of landscape, the political scheme of the "Lunatic Line" (the railroad linking Mombasa on the coast to the highlands of Kenya) tells a story about Britain's determination to have a strong foothold in eastern Africa.

What I liked about this book:

* lengthy, evocative descriptions of Kenya, from its coastal regions to its highlands and valleys;
* its full exploration of transportation and crops that assisted Britain's colonization;
* themes of what it means to be an American expatriate. In places like Paris, my own experience is that it hasn't changed much;
* the thorough inquiry into the title character's childhood and youth.

But what I didn't like was

* the "we can assume" tone (sometimes verbatim) that is used to interpret the thoughts and behaviors of some of the principals;
* a sense that the writer doesn't really like his subject (to which a reasonable retort might be that she simply isn't a sympathetic character);
* the strong whiff of psychological autopsy, a notion I reject outright;
* the title: arguably the title character is no more scandalous than any of the other leading players in this story.

This isn't a book for kids, imho. There are lengthy passages that deal with debauchery on a level that is frankly cringe-making. But for those with an interest in how some of the colonists lived in Kenya from early to mid-twentieth century, there is plenty to digest and mull over.

I'll be seeking out literature about the Mombasa railway and about the history of safaris in east Africa. So, for all my reservations, it's hard to complain much about a book that I know has sent me off on a treasure hunt for more knowledge about a fascinating place and time.

In 1899 Alice Silverthorne was born in Buffalo. Her father was a self made lumber baron and her mother a Chicago socialite. In 1913 the family imploded as law suits are filed to include custody of Alice. In 1920 Alice and her guardian Aunt Tattie go to Paris where she meets Count Frederic de Jantze. They marry and she gives birth to her first child in 1922. The family spends much of their time in Kenya. In 1927 Alice fails to kill herself and her lover Lord Raymund de Trafford when he dumped her. Five years later he becomes her second spouse. Meanwhile from almost her arrival in Kenya she has an affair for years with Joss Hay (Lord Erroll). In 1941 Joss is shot to death; soon after Alice commits suicide.

The cold case murder was international news in 1941 and made into a book by James Fox and movie White Mischief. Using family documents and photos as Paul Spicer's mom was a friend of Alice; the author makes a strong argument that the apparently passionate delusional Alice killed Joss and then herself. Historical fans and biographical readers will fully enjoy "The Scandalous Life of Alice de Jantze and the Mysterious Death of Lord Erroll" as Mr. Spicer provides a deep nonfiction account in which he defends his assertion that Alice killed Erroll in her quest to be loved.

The Temptress

I first became aware of the subject matter concerning this book when I saw the 1987 film "White Mischief" which had to deal the decandent society known as the
"Happy Valley Set."

When I read Piers Brandon's chapter about the Happy Valley Set, I purchased this book. It is a purported biography of American heiress Alice de Janze, that claims that it solves the 1941 murder of Lord Eroll.

The "thesis" of this book is that de Janze, mentally unstable, aging and having lost her popularity murdered Eroll in a fit of insane rage then killed herself
about a month or so later.

What it really is, is a defense of the prime suspect in the murder as well as Eroll's own wife. The book portray's "The Happy Valley Set" as a bunch of lefties straight out of the 1960's American Counter Culture.

While never mentioning Brandon's assertions about pro Mussolini & pro Hitler leanings as well as racism and anti semitism.

The author claims to have in his poession de Janze's own confession amongst her papers, yet he never produces this confession in a appendix.

This book is really a form of spin-doctoring designed "to prove" that a realtive of his was not the killer, indeed you are better off you purchase Brandon's book about the British Empire, and Osborne's book "The Bolter" than this piece of,

Poorly written, poorly edited

A meandering and mean-spirited book that the world could truly do without. I bought it not because I am a fan of Anka's, but to read about how his career intersected with others'. What I got was a book that meandered all over the place with no chronological thought, almost no detail except on truly juvenile pranks he played on others even as an adult and incredible repetitiveness that any half-skilled editor should have caught and sent back for a rewrite. Egotistical, mean-spirited and boring. Don't waste your money or your time.

What a disappointment

This memoir started out to be promising but soon degenerated into a conceited, sordid mess. Endless ramblings about the rat pack, the mafia, needless mean spirited tattling (he claims to be a friend to Sammy Davis jr but I sure hope Sammy's kids don't pick this up thinking Uncle Paul would say nice things.)

Another singer who left his faithful wife after a zillion years, what a guy. Glad I didn't push out 5 babies for him. And then let's whine about wife 2....

An egotistical jerk, Too bad I'll think that every time I hear one of his songs from now on. A complete waste of money.

Until Our Last Breath is the culmination of his research, and his parents’ story of love and survival is seamlessly tied into the collective story of the Vilna ghetto, the partisans of Vilna, and the wider themes of world history.

Zenia, Bart’s mother, was born and raised in Vilna. Leizer fled there to escape the Nazi invasion of his hometown of Hrubieshov in Poland. They were married by one of the last remaining rabbis ninety days before the liquidation of the ghetto. Leizer was friends with Zionist leader Abba Kovner and became a member of the Vilna ghetto underground. Shortly before the total liquidation of the ghetto, Zenia and Leizer, along with about 120 members of the underground, were able to escape to the Rudnicki forest, about 25 miles away. They became part of the Jewish partisan fighting group led by Abba Kovner—known as the Avengers—which carried out sabotage missions against the Nazi army and eventually participated in the liberation of Vilna.

Until Our Last Breath is intensely personal and painstakingly researched, a lasting memorial to the Jews of Vilna, including the resistance fighters and the author’s family.

Only after Bart's father died did he learn that his parents, Leizer and Zenia, Lithuanian Holocaust survivors, had also fought in the Resistance. With his mother suffering from Alzheimer's, Bart cobbles together their story, which he and coauthor Corona, a professor of English and humanities at San Diego City College, relate along with the larger story of the Vilna ghetto. Leizer and Zenia's romance is unusually poignant against the background of the privations of the ghetto; the old social distinctions between Zenia's upper-class Lithuanian family and Leizer's poor Polish origins were brushed aside within the ghetto's confines. The young couple fled the ghetto in its waning days to fight in a part of the Resistance known as the Avengers. The group is best known for its controversial postwar activities, which the Barts declined to participate in, partly out of concern for Zenia's health. Bart posits that his book presents two interrelated narratives. One is historical, describing events pertaining to the Nazi occupation of Lithuania and the experiences of the Jews during those years. The other is the story of Leizer and Zenia Bart, his parents. They had been involved in the Jewish underground resistance during World War II with a group led by Abba Kovner, and they had spent nearly a year living in the forest, blowing up trains and sabotaging telephone and other communication equipment. They had lived in the Vilna ghetto for two years before escaping to join the partisans. Bart was able to locate his parents’ records and some important documents, including letters his mother had written to the U.S. from Vilna after the liberation and later from Rome where she and her husband lived as displaced persons. Heroes forever

As someone who has spent years in Vilna, I know of the places which Michael Bart studied and Laurel Corona then wrote about. Mr. Bart did lengthy and in-depth work and Ms. Corona took that research in combination with her own visit to Vilna and research to turn Until Our Last Breath into a must-read. I have been fortunate enough to meet former Jewish partisans, Righteous Gentiles, and those rescued. After reading this book, I realize how much I missed by never having met Michael Bart's parents. They were real people cast into a surreal situation. No matter how inhumane conditions became, both of them managed to hold onto their humanity. They were heroes who never realized how extraordinary they were. The world is a far better place thanks to what they did. What they did was never surrender in the face of insanity and cruelty. If only all of us could be so strong. Thanks to Michael Bart for all of his efforts. Thanks also to Laurel Corona for putting the story down on paper so it can be shared with the world.

A Historical Page-turner

Holocaust histories are notoriously difficult to read- the subject matter is after all one of the darkest chapters in human history. Thus, Authors are challenged to not only present this history accurately, but also do so in a manner that encourages the reader to continue on. Michael Bart and Laurel Corona have really done a splendid job in bringing us this important book- which follows the story of Michael's parents during their time in the Vilna Ghetto and then as Jewish Partisans in the Rudnicki forest. Meticulously researched and footnoted, the book gives us a historically accurate, yet vivid account of what the Holocaust looked like to a young couple, married in the midst of horror and their subsequent road of survival, liberation and rebirth.

Amazing true story of family's struggle and escape

This book is absolutely incredible, weaving in a historical sense and perspective alongside the true story of a family's struggle in the ghettos of the holocaust. I read through this so quickly and could easily go back to re-read and focus on references to the larger history of Jews during WWII.

Very inspiring, uplifting and emotional.

Contemporary Linguistics : an introduction is a comprehensive, fully up-to-date introduction to linguistics. The book covers not only how language is structured, but also how it functions both socially and culturally, and how it is acquired and processed by speakers. It will prepare students to go on to more advanced work and, at the same time, will serve as a basic reference that students can continue to consult throughout their studies.

The text explores all the core areas of linguistics as well as numerous interdisciplinary and related areas.

Core topics covered include phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, the genetic and typological classification of the languages of the world, and historical linguistics.
Interdisciplinary areas discussed include language and the brain, psycholinguistics - the study of language processing, first and second language acquistion, language in social contexts and the fast-growing area of computational linguistics.
Related areas explored include writing systems and animal communication.

A modular arrangement of the material facilitates the use of the book in courses at varying levels, and with differing emphasis. Each chapter contains basic information - so prior knowledge of the subject is not a prerequisite. However, many chapters include additional material which is flagged as 'advanced', to provide scope and challenge for those readers who wish to take the study further. Each chapter also contains clearly defined headings, a summary and an up-to-date bibliography. Hints which provide a valuable aid for solving analytical problems are included in the appendices, together with end-of-chapter exercises which allow the reader to learn by actually 'doing linguistics'. A detailed glossary of terms enables readers to check definitions and a language index (as well as a standard subject index) are provided at the back of the book.

Originally co-edited by William O'Grady and Michael Dobrovolsky, with contributions from other leading scholars, and published in Canada, this major textbook has beenfully adapted and updated by Francis Katamba for use in Britain and the rest of the world outside North America.

Contemporary Linguistics can be used from first year through to final year as a main text for students taking degree courses in linguistics, English language and cognitive science and by MA students on TEFL courses. It is also highly suitable for students taking language options in media and cultural studies modern language, psychology and philosophy, as well as for speech therapy courses.

William O' Grady is Professor of Linguistics and Graduate Chair in the Department of Linguisitics at the University of Hawaii at Manoa and Michael Dobrovolsky is Associate Professor of Linguistics at the University of Calgary. Francis Katamba is a Reader in Linguistics in the Department of Linguistics and Modern English Language at Lancaster University. His other publications include An Introduction to Phonology in the Learning about Language series, and New Frontiers in Phonology co-edited with Professor Jacques Durand, both published by Longman.

About the Author
WILLIAM O'GRADY teaches linguistics at the University of Hawaii at Manoa and is the author of several scholarly books. His research focuses on syntactic theory, language acquisition, and Korean.

JOHN ARCHIBALD in addition to teaching linguistics at the University of Calgary, studies the acquisition of phonology and has written several books on the subject.

MARK ARONOFF is professor of linguistics at Stony Brook University and was President of the Linguistic Society of America for 2005. He has written numerous articles and several books on aspects of linguistic morphology, as well as on orthography and the teaching of linguistics.

JANIE REES-MILLER is director of the English as a Second Language program at Marietta College, Ohio. In research and teaching, she is concerned with the interface between theory and practice and with making linguistics accessible to nonlinguists. She is coeditor with Mark Aronoff of The Handbook of Linguistics.

ISELA PHELPS is the author of LOOM KNITTING PRIMER and part of Décor Accents, Inc., a manufacturer of knitting looms. She teaches knitting loom classes at Yarn Today, her local yarn store in Utah. Isela is the loom master!

when I began my journey into Loom Knitting, Isela's website provided me with so much assistance and wonderful products. I am involved in many looming groups and she is revered highly. I LOVED her first book so I didn't hesitate to put my pre-order in for her second. I like the variety she has included in this new book. A little for everyone. I am looking forward to starting several of the projects. The only negative I personally had is the over-abundance of infant/child patterns. I myself am not interested in these and they do take up a good portion of the patterns. That was my only disappointment. Overall it is a excellent book, and if you don't own the 1st, it is nice that she gives insight of some of the basics/stiches to get you started. Thanks Isela.

A lot of funtastic ideas & designs, & still a few items for the faint at heart or someone advancing from the beginner stage!
