Panic Attack, by Jason Starr

An intruder, a desperate struggle, a family under siege: This is Jason Starr's most provocative and suspenseful novel to date.

Dr. Adam Bloom has the perfect life. He's financially secure and lives in a luxurious house with his wife, Dana, and their twenty-two-year-old daughter, Marissa, a recent college graduate. Late one night, his daughter wakes him up and says, "Somebody's downstairs." Adam uses his gun to kill one of the unarmed intruders, but the other escapes. From that moment on, everyone's life in the Bloom household will never be the same.

Adam doesn't feel safe, not with the other intruder out there somewhere, knowing where he lives. Dana suggests moving, but Adam has lived in the house all his life and he doesn't want to run away. As the family recovers from the break-in and the Blooms' already rocky relationship rapidly falls apart, Marissa meets a young, talented artist named Xan. Adam feels that something's not quite right with Xan, but his daughter ignores his warnings and falls deeply in love with him. When suspicious things start happening to the Blooms all over again, Adam realizes that his first instinct about Xan was probably dead on.

With Panic Attack, Jason Starr is at his best, crafting a harrowing page-turner that will blow readers away.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. A bungled burglary sparks Starr's darkly humorous crime thriller. Carlos Sanchez wasn't expecting anyone to be home, much less have an entire clip emptied into him as he reached the top of the stairs of the brownstone he breaks into in Forest Hills Gardens, Queens. The gun-wielding psychologist, Adam Bloom, is almost equally surprised—instead of being hailed as a hero for defending his wife and daughter in his own home, the media vilify him as a crazed vigilante for using all 10 bullets. Even worse, the sociopathic Johnny Long, going along with his pal Carlos for an easy score, decides to make the Blooms pay in more blood for the incident after he escapes into the night. Targeting the wife and daughter, the vainly handsome Long may be a delicious bit of self-parody by the photogenic author, who remains unexcelled in portraying self-involved New Yorkers. Funny and suspenseful, this novel is Starr delightfully at the top of his game. Author tour.(Aug.)

From Booklist
Psychotherapist Adam Bloom, wife Dana, and daughter Marissa seem to have it all: financial security, a lovely home in a leafy enclave in New York City, a loyal housekeeper, and each other. But Marissa has returned to the nest after graduation from Vassar full of angst about her future, and Adam and Dana do little but lacerate each other. Their privileged, neurotic lives are completely upended when Adam shoots a burglar who has entered their home. Cops, ravening media, Dana’s loathing of Adam’s gun, and the possibility that a second burglar may seek revenge turn Bloom family dynamics toxic—and deadly. Starr’s plotting is elaborate, and his development of principal characters is deft and detailed. The marital antagonisms will likely strike a chord with almost anyone who has been married for two decades. The problem is that the Blooms and the other characters are totally self-absorbed and not terribly interesting; Panic Attack is well put together, but crime fans usually want someone to root for. --Thomas Gaughan

Review

“This is the ultimate page-turner---a thriller that brilliantly blends psychological and physical suspense. It's rare that you get either one in a book, but Jason Starr delivers them both in spades.” ―Michael Connelly, New York Times bestselling author of The Brass Verdict

“Panic Attack is that rare thing---a novel that manages to be both flat-out terrifying and completely brilliant. Jason Starr's prose is as taut, vicious, relentless, and elegant as a jeweled hand tightening around your throat. Even as it has you gasping, you can't help but appreciate the grip. If there is such a thing as the perfect thriller, Starr has just written it. The ending alone will have you breathing in paper bags for a week.” ―Jerry Stahl, New York Times bestselling author of Permanent Midnight and Pain Killers

“Fast-moving, psychologically astute, and 100 percent chilling.” ―Andrew Gross, New York Times bestselling author of The Dark Tide

Jason Starr books are like eating candy.
By JUDITH A. BROWN
I can't resist reading everyone of his books I can get my hands on. His writing paints a picture and I feel I've met his characters at one time or another. Oh course, the characters in my story don't get in as much trouble. My characters are not as violent and hopefully make better choices. I try to savor his books, but in the end I find myself consuming them. I always want another. I like dark chocolate.

Hard to Put Down
By Steven James
This is one of those books that once you start reading you can't put down. Although it may not be the world's greatest work of literature it is completely engaging and will have you on the edge of your seat. It is interesting to see how one random act can snowball and affect the lives of many. I agree with other reviewers who say that the characters aren't likeable...and that is this book's one downfall. It was hard to care whether the characters were killed or spared. The only one who had any sense at all is the Grandmother, but unfortunately she appears too late, near the end of the book. But even with those flaws I found PANIC ATTACK to be a fast-paced thrill ride that kept me reading until the wee hours of the morning.

"Somebody's downstairs."
By E. Bukowsky
Jason Starr's "Panic Attack" opens with psychologist Adam Bloom awakening from a recurring nightmare in which he is being chased by a large black rat. He gets up with a start in the middle of the night when his twenty-two year old daughter, Marissa, yanks his arm in fear. She whispers to her father and mother that an intruder has entered their home. While Adam's wife, Dana, calls 911, Adams impulsively decides to take out his gun and confront the criminal. This unwise decision is the first in a long line of mistakes made by Adam and his family.

The Blooms have more than their share of troubles: After twenty-three years of marriage, Adam and Dana are no longer emotionally or physically close. Dana, who is a bored housewife, believes that her husband is too self-absorbed to care about her feelings and that that he is more interested in his practice than he is in her. She also detests Adam's condescension and frequent use of psychobabble to put her in her place. Although Adam loves Marissa, he is fed up with her. After completing her studies at Vassar in art history, she returns to her parents' home, acquires tattoos, puts pink streaks in her hair, and spends most of her time hanging out with friends. She has made no realistic plans to find a job that would enable her to live independently. Her father constantly squabbles with Marissa, ordering her to get her act together.

Starr has written an electrifying and well-constructed novel with a sociopathic villain who is all the more sinister because he is so handsome and charming. He finds a way to insinuate himself into the lives of this troubled family with disastrous consequences. However, "Panic Attack" is more than an excruciatingly suspenseful and fast-paced thriller. It is also a distressing portrait of a father, mother, and daughter who can no longer speak to one another without rancor. Bloom may have some talent as a clinician, but he is a deeply flawed husband and father with a hair-trigger temper. Dana makes serious errors in judgment that come back to haunt her, and to round out this dysfunctional trio, Marissa's selfishness and irresponsibility complete her family's descent into free fall. As imperfect as they are, however, these three people do not deserve to have a vicious and sadistic killer manipulate them and use their vulnerabilities against them. Reading the exciting and unpredictable "Panic Attack" is like watching a terrible car crash. We know that we should not stare, but it is difficult to look away.

The readings are threadbare and designed to provoke foregone conclusions. Oh and another thing, the whole book aspires to look like a webpage. The final verdict: brainless and charmless--no way to go through life.
Put this book to sleep.

Required text for my Eng class, but very well written.
By Rampaige944
English is my least favorite subject. I only took it because it is a requirement. This book, however, is well written. It has clear examples, some very beautifully written, and it is understandable on all levels. I was surprised that I enjoyed quite a bit of the writing. I never would have bought it on my own since I don't care much for the subject, but I am glad it was a required text so I could encounter it. I have to admit, It was an excellent source to improving my writing and understanding of the subject.

From Publishers Weekly
Freelance writer Coleman (Eddie Would Go) examines the history of surfing in Hawaii through the lens of Makaha, an isolated town on the west coast of Oahu. Makaha is the heart and soul of the title, but those words also apply to the men and women whose stories give life to the town. Chief among them is Richard Buffalo Keaulana, an accomplished waterman of full-blood Hawaiian descent. Born in 1934, Keaulana grew up during the evolution of surfing from an obscure ritual in a far-flung corner of the American empire to an international phenomenon. For Coleman, Keaulana embodies the culture that produced the first longboard and the elusive concept of aloha. Coleman also tells the story of the women's surfing pioneer, Rell Sunn; the Rabelaisian Hawaiian singer and songwriter Israel Kamakawiwo'ole; and the first voyage of the Hokule'a, a replica of traditional Polynesian voyaging canoes. Coleman tends to romanticize his subjects (Looking into the deep brown eyes of Brian Keaulana is like seeing the soul of Makaha) and the narrative doesn't always come together, yet his unquestioning embrace of all things Hawaiian is infectious, and his subtle charm will please all true believers in the soul of surfing. Dude! Hang ten! Don’t wipe out! Such phrases, both quaint and common, have their genesis on the sylvan shores of the Hawaiian islands, home to the ancient and modern sport of surfing. And nowhere has the taming of the waves been more revered or refined than in the tiny, isolated village of Makaha on Oahu’s wild western coast. Led by the aptly named Buffalo Keaulana, a ragtag group of rebels and outlaws, loners and drifters, natives and haoles found solace and sought glory there through the study and mastery of towering walls of water. Inspiring and inspired by the gentle songs of Makaha’s giant Israel “Iz” Kamakawiwo’ole, this renegade village came to embody the peace and power of the ocean. Coleman richly pays homage to the legendary pioneers who elevated surfing from an island pastime to an international competition and shares stories of the great generosity, unwavering courage, and audacious vitality of the surfers who epitomize the deep cultural resonance of the Hawaiian spirit. --Carol Haggas

Review

Fierce Heart is a memorable collection of stories about a unique place and a cast of characters that truly define modern Hawaiian culture and the spirit of aloha.”--Shaun Tomson, World Champion Surfer and author of Surfer’s Code and Bustin’ Down the Door

“Be warned, this edgy, fast-paced book is like surfing a Makaha wave - once you take off, there’s no turning back - once you start reading Fierce Heart, you will be unable to put it down. Fierce Heart ‘s wisdom will linger with you for a very long time, and you will never look at your own life the same way again.”--Sandra Kimberly Hall, author of Duke: A Great Hawaiian

"Fierce Heart shines a light onto the world's best-known, least-understood surf break." --Matt Warshaw, author of Maverick’s and The Encyclopedia of Surfing

"The spiritual home of the traditional, ocean-based culture of Oahu's West Side is at Makaha, where the bonds of community have been nurtured and tested by the surf.  Stuart Coleman gracefully guides us into this world with respect and heart." – Drew Kampion, author of Stoked!, Lost Coast, and Greg Noll, The Art of the Surf Board

"The author of Eddie Would Go has crafted another masterpiece of insight, detail and sensitivity to the Hawaiian culture. Having made dozens of surfing trips to Makaha over the years, I've experienced both the warmth and distrust of its proud residents, and I always felt they were gravely misunderstood. Coleman tells the exquisite truth with remarkable depth."--Bruce Jenkins, San Francisco Chronicle and Surfer Magazine sports columnist, author of North Shore Chronicles

“If your favorite armchair travel fantasy is like mine -- turn off the main road, switch into four-wheel drive and suddenly there's the Great Good Place -- here's the Hawaiian trip of your dreams. Stuart Coleman's sincere interest in the rugged Westside of O'ahu got him into the inner circle of the Hawaii that most tourists never see, and he delivers astonishingly intimate portraits of surfers, singers and sea goddesses. There are no luxury hotels, Don Ho music or dancing girls in the pages of Fierce Heart, just raw life and native pride -- and local heroes who really are heroic.”-- Jesse Kornbluth, editor of HeadButler.com

"Fierce Heart is a powerful tribute to the Queen of Makaha. The stories in the book capture my mom's spirit of aloha and her dedication to helping others.  At the Rell Sunn Educational Fund, we are committed to continuing her legacy, and this book will help keep her spirit alive for years to come.”--Jan Sunn-Carreira, Rell Sunn Educational Fund

"...during the swift reading of this book you will enjoy over 100 insider stories of the wild west side. It's as if you are sitting in the shade of Uncle Buff's lifeguard tower as the waves roll in and the bruddahs talk story. What Coleman did for Aikau, he has now done for the legends of the west side. He has bravely and honestly reported the stories of these people, who have likewise bravely and honestly offered the truth. The author's prose is clean, precise, and beautiful, like a single fin longboard smoothly slicing through waves of glass. The long wait for his second book is justified, and Coleman can now consider himself a mythmaker of sorts." --Big Island Weekly "...an impressive effort, full of information and anecdotes...an enjoyable read, packed with tales about wild times and practical jokes." --Maui Weekly

Great book and an excellent summer read...
By The Waterman's Library
Like Matt Warshaw and Drew Kampion, Stuart Coleman (the author of Eddie Would Go) is fast becoming one of today's best chroniclers of surfing history, heritage and culture. In his latest book Fierce Heart: The Story of Makaha and the Soul of Hawaiian Surfing, Holmes puts his extensive research talents to work in order to pay homage to Makaha on O'ahu's wild West Side. In order to capture the essence of Makaha, Coleman relies upon the rich histories of three Makaha legends: the Keaulana family, Rell Sun and Bruddah Iz. While all three subjects symbolize both the shared and unique parts of the Makaha spirit, it's the Keaulana clan, and patriarch Buffalo in particular, that serves as the story's soul. Throughout Coleman's descriptions of Rell and Iz's triumphs and tragic ends, Buffalo and the rest of the Keaulanas are there, providing warmth, guidance, support and, of course, food. Coleman's attention to detail delivers extensive quotes and anecdotes from legendary watermen like Greg Noll, Melvin Pu'u, Ricky Grigg and Peter Cole. While parts of the stories and descriptions appear overly romanticized, Fierce Heart generally provides a deep and honest look at Hawaii, Hawaiians and surfing. This book is a great summer beach read. [...]

A non surfer reads her first surfing genre book
By Margo H. Pellegrino
This was the first ever "surfing genre" type book I've ever read. Not one to pick up a surf mag and peruse around its pages, I think that I might be inclined to do so after reading this book. The descriptions of the people, the culture, and the surf events and daring rescues of the life guards made for quick reading that made me feel as if I were in Makaha enjoying the wonderful personalities and beautiful places Coleman describes. In surfing it seems art and life are fused on the moving canvas of the ocean. This book reiterates what is important in this life. It will make you laugh, and it will make you cry. I totally urge anyone who has even the remotest curiosity about surfing, Hawaii, and what is important in life to pick it up.

A great history compiled from the westside
By Robert Barreca
I wanted to read this book because of Eddie Would Go: The Story of Eddie Aikau, Hawaiian Hero and Pioneer of Big Wave Surfing and thought it was a super interesting history of the wild westside. I didn't grow up on the westside, but know people who have grown up surfing over there and have some intense stories.

I think this is a good book for any surfer to read to learn a little history of the place, especially if you surf over there nowadays as things are way mellower. But hey, I guess if you grew up surfing Makaha and living the westside, there might not be much in this book for you, but for the rest of us I think it's a good buy.

Katherine the Queen: The Remarkable Life of Katherine Parr, the Last Wife of Henry VIII, by Linda Porter

The general perception of Katherine Parr is that she was a provincial nobody with intellectual pretensions who became queen of England because the king needed a nurse as his health declined. Yet the real Katherine Parr was attractive, passionate, ambitious, and highly intelligent. Thirty-years-old (younger than Anne Boleyn had been) when she married the king, she was twice widowed and held hostage by the northern rebels during the great uprising of 1536-37 known as the Pilgrimage of Grace. Her life had been dramatic even before she became queen and it would remain so after Henry’s death. She hastily and secretly married her old flame, the rakish Sir Thomas Seymour, and died shortly after giving birth to her only child in September 1548. Her brief happiness was undermined by the very public flirtation of her husband and step-daughter, Princess Elizabeth. She was one of the most influential and active queen consorts in English history, and this is her story.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. Although often depicted by the Victorians as a matronly nurse to an elderly king, Katherine Parr (1512–1548), according to Porter, was a stylish trendsetter of 30, sensual, confident, dynamic, exceptionally educated and cultured, and able to perform with aplomb on both an English and international stage. Born into a prominent, northern family of Yorkist sympathies, Katherine was widowed twice before marrying Henry VIII: a brief first marriage thrust her into a troubled family; her second husband, John Neville, Lord Latimer, put his life and fortune at risk when he became embroiled on the side of the rebels in the 1536 northern uprising, known as the Pilgrimage of Grace. Probably already in love with seasoned diplomat and soldier Sir Thomas Seymour, the king's brother-in-law, when she married Henry, the pragmatic Katherine embraced her royal role with enthusiasm. British historian Porter (The Myth of "Bloody Mary") claims Elizabeth I's education, religious beliefs, and consciousness of personal image owed much to her loving stepmother. Rich, perceptive, nuanced and creative, this first full-scale biography gives one of Britain's best but least-known queens her due. 16 pages of color illus. (Dec.) (c)

Published almost simultaneously with a biography of Henry VIII’s first queen (Catherine of Aragon: The Spanish Queen of Henry VIII) comes this one on his last. Katherine Parr had already been wed and widowed twice when Henry asked her to be his wife. Although she was in love with another man, the swashbuckling Thomas Seymour, she agreed to marry the king because she thought it was “God’s will.” Her new position enabled her to develop close relationships with the king’s children, and she was a role model for Elizabeth, in particular. It also enabled her to promote the cause of religious reform and even undertake several literary projects. Her intellectual pursuits may have been part of what got her into hot water with the king, who was disappointed (again) by the lack of a son and in any case was quickly bored by wives. Not long after Henry’s death in 1547 Katherine raised eyebrows by marrying Thomas Seymour, and in 1548 she herself died after giving birth. This readable study fills another hole on the growing Tudor bookshelf. --Mary Ellen Quinn

Review

“Missing ‘The Tudors’ TV show? The story continues in this biography of Henry VIII’s sixth wife, Katherine Parr, who soon after the king’s death entered another marriage — her fourth. Historian Porter chronicles Parr’s life before, during and after her reign as Henry’s queen, including the scandalous flirtation between Husband No. 4, Thomas Seymour, and Katherine’s stepdaughter, the future Queen Elizabeth I.”—New York Post

“Rich, perceptive, nuanced and creative, this first full-scale biography gives one of Britain's best but least-known queens her due.”—Publishers Weekly (starred review)

“Linda Porter has done a marvellous job in bringing Katherine Parr to life. In so doing, she evokes the whole terrifying and exciting world of the Tudor courts, packed with intrigue and danger.”—A.N. Wilson

“Porter combines equal parts Tudor history and Parr biography. She establishes the context then weaves Parr's life through it like a ribbon in a tapestry. The result is a well-documented, compelling story filled with the intrigue and drama one has come to expect of the time period. . . . Shortly after the king's death, Katherine secretly married her old flame. Rumors of inappropriate behavior between her husband and stepdaughter, Princess Elizabeth, began circulating. This is the stuff of a cable miniseries, but Porter tempers the narrative with Katherine's accomplishments, creating a balanced, satisfying read.”—The Post and Courier, Charleston, SC

“This is a portrait of a fascinating, learned and vibrant woman who was every inch a queen. . . . Porter covers Katherine’s life from infancy to death (and even beyond that), but this book shines the most once Porter starts describing Katherine’s role as queen and stepmother to England’s future monarchs. This is a worthwhile addition to any Tudor history buff’s book collection.”—CurledUpWithAGoodBook.com

“Porter offers a nuanced picture of family allegiances and intellectual background.”—Financial Times (UK)

“Vividly written . . . Katherine was an influential woman. As stepmother she shaped Elizabeth I, one of England's most successful monarchs. . . . Porter presents a portrait of an attractive woman more than capable of navigating the treacherous waters of life at the duplicitous Tudor court.”—Peter Burton, Daily Express (UK)
“Porter's account of Katherine's life is colourful and well paced . . . Katherine’s was indeed a remarkable life.”—Matthew Dennison, Mail on Sunday (UK) “Porter provides a reliable synthesis of the best historical research on Katherine's life and times, while periodically going beyond it to offer original contributions.”—Peter Marshall, The Literary Review (UK)

Utterly Captivating, Well Written and a Pleasure To Read
By MusingCrow
Katherine Parr is really an interesting figure - a woman who was ahead of her Tudor time. She was highly intelligent, well educated and well read - and she survived her oft married husband - Henry VIII.

There has not been that much written about her life however - until now. This book is a really well written, thoroughly researched and utterly captivating glimpse into the life of this remarkable Queen. Linda Porter has a remarkable way with biographies. They come to life under her pen. I have been a life long fan of historical fiction - based on British history. Some time ago I decided that I wanted to fill in the fictitious gaps with non-fiction. This book reads as easily as fiction. It's a pleasure - not pedantic, not dry - but completely easy and pleasurable to read. It took me only a few days to read this book and it is a book that will remain in my collection.

The book covers :
The early life of Katherine Parr,
Her two previous marriages (I had not heard much about the first before reading this book)
How she made her way into Court life and how Henry decided to make her his sixth wife.
Her relationship with Henry's three children and her own step-daughter from her second marriage (another fact that had not registered in my head before)
How she narrowly missed being another statistic for murdered Queens of England.
Her life after Henry's death.
Life with Thomas Seymour and the kerfuffle with Princess Elizabeth and Thomas Seymour.
Her death giving birth to her longed for child.

This book covers it all and does so in a most enjoyable way. If you are an Anglophile as I am this book is, simply, a must read. It's a should read for anyone who enjoys biographies, British Royalty and British history.

British historian Linda Porter does justice to Katherine Parr the last of Henry VIII's six wives
By C. M Mills
Katherine Parr (1512-48) was the sixth and final wife of Henry VIII. She has been neglected and mytholigized by historians in the 450 years since her death. Katherine was a bright, sexy woman who spoke and read several modern languages as well as Latin. She was married as a teenager to Edward Borough a rich and eccentric man who died when she was only 20. Katherine then married John Neville Lord Latimer. Latimer was involved in the Pilgrimage of Grace uprising against Henry VIII. He was much older than Katherine and died while she was still young. Katherine, twice widowed, was then wed to Henry VIII becoming the Queen of England.
Katherine was a good stepmother to Henry's three children: Mary, Elizabeth and Edward. All three was ascend the throne. All three loved Katherine. Following the death of Henry she married Admiral Thomas Seymour. Seymour may have been in love with Princess Elizabeth. He was executed for treason. Katherine died as the results of giving birth to a girl Mary.
Katherine is important for several reasons:
a. She strongly influenced Queen Elizabeth I on how to govern. Katherine served as Regent of England while Henry was away on campaign in France.
b. She was a strong advocate of the Protestant Reformation influencing Edward VI who in his short reign of six years advocated evangelicalism in Great Britain. (Edward I reigned from 1546-53).
c. Katherine was the author of "Lamentations of a Sinner" which espoused Protestant piety and the reading of the Bible in the English language.
Katherine was a tough survivor in a brutal age. She is most deserving of this fine biography by Dr. Linda Porter. This book is Tudor history at its best.

A Sumptuous Read
By Susanne Boehm
It's refreshing for a history buff like me to find an author who takes the time to make the story of an iconic but largely understated figure like Katherine Parr accurate as well as interesting. There are plenty of small details such as Katherine's love of finery and jewelry as well as religious reforms that help us to understand what her life was like. Her influence on English history is far greater than historians of the past have considered - her love and concern for all three of Henry VIII's gifted children and her conscientious bringing them together as often as possible made her a trusted friend they could turn to in the absence of their father who loved them but was rarely seen by them.

I highly recommend this book for all Tutor fans who have become familiar with this period through the many available books as well as the popular "The Tutors" series.

Poison Ivy, by Amy Goldman Koss

When three popular girls go on trial in Government class for their ruthless bullying of a girl named Ivy, it seems like the misfit will finally get her revenge. Eight first-person narrators give different versions of the event: Ivy―this victim doesn't want revenge, she just wants to be left alone; Ann―she's the beautiful, but infamously cruel, leader of the bullies; Marco―he may be the only person involved who has any morals, but he's also the target of Ann's persuasive affections; Daria―Ivy's painfully shy lawyer doesn't stand a chance; Bryce―the goofy court reporter knows all the real dirt, even if he doesn't care; Cameron―he sleeps through the proceedings but might wake up just in time to make a difference; Wayne―a true devotee of the legal process, too bad he's on the sidelines; and Faith―as the only witness for the prosecution, it all comes down to her. But where do her loyalties lie?

From School Library Journal
Grade 6-9–Ivy has been a victim of relentless bullying for years. Nicknamed Poison Ivy by Ann, Benita, and Sophie in fourth grade, she can hardly remember what it was like to be just plain Ivy. When earnest Ms. Gold, the middle school American government teacher, finds a depressing poem written by Ivy, she decides to put The Evil Three on trial for bullying. She is hoping to create a perfect learning experience to illustrate the American judicial system to the class–and possibly to teach the three girls a lesson. What Ms. Gold does not count on, however, is the power of popular kids and the resulting political leverage. Students are assigned roles: counsel for the plaintiff, process server, judge, jury, etc. The action is related through the multiple voices of the major figures in the mock trial proceedings, and readers see many personalities emerge in the alternate chapters. Of particular interest is the relationship among The Evil Three. Ann, the leader, clearly enjoys the status that Benita and Sophie give her in their roles as bystanders in the bullying process. Realistic dialogue and fast-paced action will hold interest, and the final verdict is unsettling, but not unexpected. This book will be useful for class discussions along with Kosss The Girls (Dial, 2000), another realistic and equally effective look at the agonizing bullying of a classmate.–Jennifer Ralston, Harford County Public Library, Belcamp, MD

Gr. 7-10. What better way to explain government in action than to stage a mock trial, in this case a trial in which one unpopular girl, Ivy (aka Poison Ivy), seeks to bring three bullies to justice. Alas, the questionable ambitions of a teacher, the fearful power of popularity, and the sad truth of how losers are made combine to make things ugly. The trial unfolds through the alternating viewpoint of several students, each of whom has a distinctive voice: Marcus' is penetrating and contemptuous; Ivy's is strangely cool; Ann's bubbles with cruelty. Sometimes the dialogue sounds candid and natural; at other times, it's overly dramatized. And, unfortunately, because readers never see how Ivy is bullied (we're just told it's bad), the story lacks an emotional punch. The message is clear: beauty, popularity, and fear are the trinity by which girls rule, and although most teenagers aren't cruel, many are indifferent to the suffering of their peers and are thankful they aren't the ones in the spotlight. School stories like this aren't rare, but they make compelling reading for teenagers in the trenches. Krista Hutley

“The message is clear: beauty, popularity, and fear are the trinity by which girls rule, and although most teenagers aren't cruel, many are indifferent to the suffering of their peers and are thankful they aren't the ones in the spotlight. . . . compelling reading for teenagers in the trenches.” ―Booklist

“[Koss] uses the authentic voices of eight diverse teens to create a "mock trial" in an American Government class. . . . The interactions among the students in and out of the "courtroom" offer readers intriguing and often disturbing perspectives on popularity, peer pressure, bullying and fairness. In the end, Marco best articulates the outcome: ‘Beauty wins and truth is irrelevant. Grim, isn't it?' Yes. And, in these pages, it's all too convincing.” ―Publishers Weekly

“Realistic dialogue and fast-paced action will hold interest, and the final verdict is unsettling, but not unexpected.” ―School Library Journal

Gives "Mean Girls" a run for its money!
By Michelle Dunn
Amy Goldman Koss gives us a great story told by eight different points of view. In a government class at school, a group of girls goes on "trial" for their bullying of a classmate they call "Poison Ivy". This story will give you the eight different points of view from each girl on the same event. Very interstingly puts you into the minds and perceptions of each narrator. See how differently these story tellers see things and learn more about human nature with each chapter. For example, Marco beleives if someone gets on your nerves, it is justifiable to be mean to them, it is a reality. Get into the minds of these characters and see just how our schools societies really are.

Interesting but a little odd
By Rachael Stein
Ivy has always been taunted and cruelly treated by others, especially The Evil Three, better known as the popular girls Ann, Benita, and Sophie. But for how aloof Ivy acts, no one can really tell how much this bullying affects her, if it does at all. Enter in Ms. Gold, teacher of third hour American Government class, desperate for some conflict so she can hold an in-class trial. It seems that justice will finally be served when Ivy's problem is chosen, because everyone is aware of how Ann and her friends ridicule Ivy at every chance they get, but is anyone actually brave enough to tell the truth and risk Ann's social wrath? Daria, Ivy's lawyer may mean well but is much too deathly shy to make a difference; Wayne, practically the only student who cares about the legal process, is just one jury member; and honest Marco is only another. The odds are stacked up. Who will be brave enough to tell the truth?

Poison Ivy provides an interesting peek into the workings of high school students through a very unique government lesson. I enjoyed Koss's presentation of the story, through a series of interviews because it gave perspectives from all the key players in the pseudo-trial, and a few more. However, I thought only two characters, Marco and Wayne provided the most important content; Marco told the truth, and Wayne gave the moral of the story. The rest was all entertainment, not completely necessary but amusing all the same. It was disappointing how stereotypical characters like Daria and Ann were, and the not confrontational nature of much of the class foreshadowed the ending, eliminating most suspense value this novel could've had. Though I liked experiencing the mock trial with the class, I can't say that Poison Ivy was outstanding in any way.

Social science buffs and lawyer-to-bes will enjoy the content of this novel. Readers looking for the blunt if harsh reality of some aspects of high school will also want to read Poison Ivy.

Authentic Look at High School (Unfortunately)
By Amy Ward
Oh wow! I just finished reading Poison Ivy by Amy Goldman Koss. It tells the story of a teenager, Ivy, who puts her bullies, the Anns, on trial. It isn't a real trial, but a mock trial in their student government class. Through this trial, all the truths of high school life are revealed. The story is comprised of the different points of view of the key players. Through these characters, we come to understand the class system of high school and the cruelties that lie within.

This book was so interesting and it was also very painful to read. I knew the outcome of the book before I read it. I knew the outcome because I have lived through high school. I know how it works. I was thankfully never in Ivy's position but neither was I in Ann's position. I didn't rule the school, not even close. I was content to have a few close friends and just make it through unscathed. This book shines a spotlight on the cruelties that teens have to go through. I have no doubt that there are hundreds of thousands of Ivies living through high school right now.

I was just immediately taken in by this book. It wouldn't have worked as well as a straightforward narrative. I love how each character has his/her say. All were frustrating, even Ivy herself. It just shows that not everything in this world is cut and dry. This is a thinking book, one that I definitely recommend. The voices are authentic. I have known each of those characters in my life. If you are in high school right now, please read this book. It might change your whole perspective and maybe even your life. Thank you Amy Goldman Koss for writing such an important book.

The Year of Eating Dangerously: A Global Adventure in Search of Culinary Extremes, by Tom Parker Bowles

Fugu. Dog. Cobra. Bees. Spleen.  A 600,000 SCU chili pepper.
All considered foods by millions of people around the world.  And all objects of great fascination to Tom Parker Bowles, a food journalist who grew up eating his mother's considerably safer roast chicken, shepherd's pie and mushy peas.  Intrigued by the food phobias of two friends, Parker Bowles became inspired to examine the cultural divides that make some foods verboten or "dangerous" in the culture he grew up with while being seen as lip-smacking delicacies in others. So began a year-long odyssey through Asia, Europe and America in search of the world's most thrilling, terrifying and odd foods.

Parker Bowles is always witty and sometimes downright hilarious in recounting his quest for envelope-pushing meals, ranging from the potentially lethal to the outright disgusting to the merely gluttonous--and he proves in this book that an open mouth and an open mind are the only passports a man needs to truly discover the world .

Review
"Tom Parker Bowles is nothing if not a charmer. From the first page of his mad, odd and sometimes thoroughly disgusting "The Year of Eating Dangerously," this reader was hooked."--The Washington Times “The Year of Eating Dangerously chronicles [Tom’s] travels to destinations near (Gloustershire) and far (Nashville, Seoul, Beijing) in an attempt to acquire new experiences and eat like the natives do, and ultimately what makes it so engaging is that he only partly succeeds…As a writer, though, he never wavers.. his sense of humor is intact throughout and never sharper than when he’s writing about himself…”--The New York Times "A veritable culinary Odysseus, food critic Bowles set out from and returned to his native London to regale foodies and common omnivores alike with tales of exotic specimens from all ranges of the food spectrum. Over the course of "twelve months, four continents, 20,000 air miles and two inches on [his] waist," he managed to shove a lot into his thrill-seeking maw...while Bowles may fancy himself a professional eater with a penchant for risky man-food, he wins over his audience as a writer, describing dishes and sensations with the zeal of the recently famished, and his own hedonistic acts in delightful passages of unabashed bravado and self-deprecating humor"--Kirkus Reviews

I realize that beery bravado was the main culprit but I do remember (very vaguely) thinking what the point was in going on a search for the hottest sauces in the world if I didn't try at least a spatter. I imagine myself stepping up to the challenge, a brave knight fighting for the pride of his homeland.
'Bollocks to that,' says my ever-sensitive friend. 'You were a sweaty mess, and the whole crowd was waiting to see you go down in a blaze of unglory.'
Apparently, the braying masses whooped for joy when I took on the challenge. And the crowd grew bigger still, as at least a dozen hot-sauce maestros gathered expectantly to have a laugh at the English fool. The bottle appeared once more, named Salsa Para Pendejos.
Now it's one thing drunkenly agreeing to try a drop of this liquid fire but quite another to risk putting myself in hospital before I've finished at The Fiery Foods Show. I took the straw, touched it to my palm so there was a dot no bigger than a comma. A few in the crowd voiced their disappointment.
Ignoring the heckles, I touched the tip of my tongue to the dot of sauce on my hand, probably taking no more than a quarter of the punctuation mark blob. The crowd grew silent, craning their necks to get a better view.

A very entertaining book about gastronomical adventure
By Steven Peterson
A quirky and interesting volume. . . .Tom Parker Bowles takes time out of his life to search out "extreme food," to engage in culinary adventures. In his words, this book is about (page xx) ". . .a fascination with the world's diverse cuisines." He (page xx) "wanted to sample everything however gruesome, to try and establish some kind of culinary context." And the book features much information (even wittily presented) about cultures throughout the world, as an even greater context for cuisine.

Places that he explores include England, New Mexico, China, Nashville, Tokyo, Korea, Laos, Spain, and Sicily. Sometimes, he experiences genuine surprise, in that Laos clearly represents one of his best eating stops--much against what he had guessed. And, to repeat, it is witty. I was actually laughing as he serves as a judge at a barbeque context in Lynchburg Tennessee (although the chapter is entitled Nashville!). He describes the disappointment at poor products, prepared lovingly by cooks; he revels in the delights that were cooked to perfection.

Other chapters, to exemplify his treatment. In Laos, he began with rather low expectations. He describes weird dishes (at least weird to Westerners), such as live shrimp as a kind of salad--looking horrific and tasting great. He ate in Vientiane and in Luang Prabang, experiencing very different cuisine; however, he enjoyed and appreciated each. And, as always, he provides history, refers to written works on the country, and surrounds his discussion of the food with an appreciation of the larger society.

His description of cities in New Mexico is quite negative, and presented in a manner that aficionados will call witty and New Mexico residents snide. Nonetheless, he is there for the The National Fiery Foods and Barbeque Show in Albuquerque. He had always enjoyed chili and other hot foods. So he was desperate to check out a well known (at least to him) festival in New Mexico. Again, his writing is hilarious as he talks about eating some chili dish that is way hotter than he would have wanted. The richness of the discussion of chili and other hot substances and the experts who gathered at the festival is really quite compelling.

Then, the story of elvers. . . . But enough of the specifics. Readers can explore the pages of this volume and determine which episodes are most interesting. I would recommend this book as much for its depiction of cultures and the food as part of these cultures as for its description of some generally strange foods. A nice read.

a good start, but you'll want more out of this book
By Tomaj
Tom Parker-Bowles tried hard, but his book leaves one less than satisfied. He's a likeable guy, but not enthralling, a satisfactory writer, but not outstanding. The book often plods along with too many irrelevant references to his childhood, and the details of his time spent traveling are often pedantic overkill.

Ultimately, the book turns on its own premise. He promises you that he'll be "eating dangerously". He starts off with eels in his native England, an interesting insight to a world few will ever see. But what's dangerous about it? What's even so exotic? It's like writing about going to Louisiana to eat boudin. Not many of us do it, but it's nothing outlandish either. The idea of traveling the globe eating outrageously is hardly original, and is often hardly complimentary toward his destinations.

The exotic stuff comes in only as (1) bugs in Asia, and (2) dog in Korea. The only truly life-threatening food to eat is fugu, pufferfish, in Japan, a fish that can be fatally poisonous if not prepared correctly. But fugu is hardly a new and novel find; people have been writing about it for decades. Fugu is the only topic of the Japan chapter. Is there nothing else interesting in Japan? Other chapters deal with things such as chili sauce and American BBQ, hardly dangerous or exotic.

The worst chapter is about Korea, and it's another one-note song, about eating dog. Here he's done some research, telling us all about the horrific conditions in which the dogs are raised, and the even more horrific and cruel way they are slaughtered. He freely admits that he hates the whole idea, that it's wrong, wrong, wrong. And yet, he's going to eat it. He's not in denial; he recognizes the cognitive dissidence. But he's going to eat it. Appartantly he didn't do his research in-country, for he can't find any place to see dogs being raised and can only find one clandestine restaurant there in which to eat it. He has a bowl of dog soup, which he at first finds good, then finds disgusting, and then he flees. That's it. It's inconceivable that he flew all the way to Korea for this and could not find any more first-hand experiences to report to us.

Other chapter's foundations can be even weaker. He goes to Spain to try to join the people gathering barnacles, a practice that is horribly dangerous and requires years of skill. He announces his intention in a café, and the locals there think him imbecilic to do this just for thrill-seeking reasons. You will too. He goes to Sicily to try to have diner with a member of the Mafia. He doesn't know any Mafia people, mind you, he want to find some, with the idea that doing this stunt would be a neat thing. It's such a sophomoric scheme that you can't take him seriously at all afterwards.

Another irritant is his string of factual errors. He states that Osaka was destroyed by an atom bomb in WWII. He calls himself a gai-jin in Hong Kong (gai-jin does mean foreigner, but in Japanese, not Cantonese). And so forth. All these mistakes are small, and all could be understood and forgiven. It's just that they keep coming.

It's not all bad. His descriptions of Laos come from someone who truly appreciates the place, even if his preconceptions come off as naïve. He leaves few details out of any chapter, which is sometimes sophistic, but is often illuminating. This is a book from someone who's off to a decent start, and who should keep writing and who will probably improve, but who still has a way to go.

More place than plate...
By Sarah Durston
'The Year of Eating Dangerously' is a really good read with nine chapters based in specific locations:

Gloucestershire (hunting for elvers)
New Mexico (chillies)
China (all sorts of strange things!)
Nashville (barbecue championships)
Tokyo (puffer fish)
Korea (dog stew)
Laos (various bits and pieces)
Spain (extreme fishing with percebeiros trying to find the ultimate barnacle) and
Sicily (dinner with the mob)

Parker Bowles comes across as charming and self-aware (he knows that he's no Bourdain!) Occasionally he comes across like an overly-exuberant puppy on his quest for new tastes and flavours. But, this has to be balanced against all the times he gets horribly hung-over and is unable to taste anything. There are times when the locations seem to take over and he seems more like a frustrated travel writer rather than a gourmand!

This is a really enjoyable read, but I did prefer some chapters to others. The Nashville Barbecue and the quest for the ultimate chilli experience in New Mexico were highlights for me.

Recommended, but next time can we have a little less 'place' and a bit more 'plate'. Thanks!
