        I started with HERE BE DRAGONS and I have never looked back. Her trilogy of the decline of the Welsh kings ( DRAGON, FALLS THE SHADOW and THE RECKONING)is a holiday gift I give year after year, and I'm happy to say they have always been embraced and loved. From my 15 year old niece to my 70 year old mother and many ages in between, all readers are enchanted and transported to a land and an age gone forever. But Penman makes them live forever in our minds and hearts with fantastic, unforgettable characters and wonderful history. HERE BE DRAGONS is such a great title--medieval mapmakes would write those words across any part of the map that was unknown.. a wonderful metaphor for how little the Welsh and English knew of each other.

        SUNNE IN SPLENDOUR--Warning: This is not Shakespeare's Richard III. In this novel, Richard is a victim of circumstance and man vilified by the Tudors, but here presented as a decent and normal man, a man of conscience.
AND he is not a murderer. Yes, those princes did die, but not by Richard's hand.

        WHEN CHRIST AND HIS SAINTS SLEPT

Another wonderful title, for it refers to the 15 years of England's darkest time-the civil war between the cousins Queen Maud and King Steven. England was deserted, for Christ and his saints were sleeping. I had never even heard of these royals. Queen Maud was the legitimate heir to the throne, but a woman, and there fore not fit to rule. She is also the mother of Henry, who later married Eleanor of Aquitaine . Pretty heady stuff, more incredible men and women, another book to get totally lost in.

        Although it has been years since all these books were first published, I can name 5 stores I have been in in the past 3 months that have one of these titles in the Staff Recommends section.

Fantastic!

I'll admit it-- I've got a little crush on Richard III. I found this book to be one of the best historical fiction novels about Richard III that I have ever read. I loved that it also covered the years before his brother Edward took the throne, and it put Cecily Neville, his mother, in a different light. If you are looking for a well written and fun novel about the time of the Cousins War, do yourself a favor and read The Sunne in Splendour!

Maybe a little too perfect?

Whether or not you like this book will depend in large part in where you stand on the person and character of Richard of York, Duke of Gloucester and by the Grace of God, King of England, (however briefly).

If you are an unswayable proponent of the "Black Theory" -- that is, that Shakespeare, More and Richard's other critics were correct, that Richard killed the Princes and a lot of other people as well -- you'd probably better move along. This isn't for you.

If you haven't been persuaded yet, or are in favor of the "White Theory" -- that Richard was a good man, slandered by history -- then this is right up your alley.

It begins shortly before the deaths of Richard's father, uncle, cousins and brother at Sandal Castle and follows the fortunes of Richard, his brothers -- the hapless and self-serving George, Duke of Clarence and the shining Edward IV, the Sunne in Splendour -- and the other major players in the War of the Roses through to Richard's own death on Bosworth Field.

My only complaint -- and it's minor -- is that perhaps Richard as presented here is just a little too perfect, a little too saintly. I've no doubt he was honorable and decent -- yes, I hold to the White Theory -- and I believe he was loyal to his brother, but he comes across as someone who really never made a misstep, and I find that hard to believe.

All the same, it's a vivid portrait of its time, and very readable. You're going to want to read more about the Lancasters and Yorks when you're done.

This book, `Patterns for College Writing: A Rhetorical Reader and Guide' edited by Laurie G. Kirszner and Stephen R. Mandell, is a book widely used in colleges and universities, as well as advanced high school classes across the nation. It is a very useful text, and I use it when tutoring students in preparation for community college level writing and reading work. It is used at our college in the basic skills reading courses, too.
The book looks at how writers develop their work. The first few chapters look at some of the basic mechanics of writing - planning, writing, editing and revising. It also looks briefly at certain skills needed for writing, such as brainstorming and idea generation, as well as journal writing. There are many exercises included here to give students first-hand experience.
The second section looks at the various types of writing students will be called upon to produce - narrative papers, process papers, cause-and-effect, descriptive works, comparison-and-contrast, classification, definition, and persuasive/argumentative papers. Each chapter keeps a solid focus on the type of work presented, so that students can develop the particular skills; the final chapter in this section looks at combining the patterns, to produce more complex and comprehensive research papers and essays.
There is a thematic listing of articles that shows the breadth of topics covered - family relationships, language, education, business and work, sports, race and culture, gender, nature and the environment, media and society, history and politics, and ethics. Among more than one hundred articles are sixteen pieces written by actual students, so that students can see the model produced by people at their same level of development. Writings from famous people such as Thomas Jefferson, Martin Luther King, Jr., Flannery O'Connor and Mark Twain also give breadth and interest to the selections included here.
The writing assignments include journal writing, essays of the types modeled in the chapters, collaborative activities, and even an internet assignment. There is a companion website for students to use, and instructors can take advantage of materials provided by the publisher, such transparencies and additional samples.
The appendix has a ten-step process for writing a research paper (one of the more common types of college writing expected of students). This book was helpful in explaining basic college themes. I originally purchased the book for a first year college English course, and the material was very relevant and current. "Lord of the Far Island" by Victoria Holt is an intriguing tale of romance and danger that is well worth the read. With a fascinating and mysterious hero and a feisty, lovable heroine, Holt has succeeded in creating a tale that will keep readers interested.
Ellen Kellaway has lived with her abrasive and uncaring aunt Agatha since her mother died when she was only 5 years old. Completely used to being the "Poor Relation", Ellen has always had a tough time, but nothing her cruel aunt (actually a distant cousin) does can crush her fiery spirit and her positive outlook on life.
However, as time passes and Ellen grows from a girl into a woman, her future becomes less and less appealing. At the age of 18, Agatha informs Ellen that she will soon have to make her own way in the world and that she has found her a post as a governess for the honourable Mrs. Oman Lemming, a horrid woman who makes Agatha look like a saint.
It seems to Ellen that there is no way to escape her unpleasant future, until the son of a wealthy and influential family proposes to her. Thrilled with the idea of escaping her terrible fate of working for Mrs. Oman Lemming, Ellen accepts the proposal. But due to an awful tragedy, the wedding never takes place, and Ellen's future looks bleaker than ever.
Then, out of the blue, a letter arrives from a distant relative on her father's side of the family, asking Ellen to come and stay with him. Ellen can't believe her luck and accepts the invitation from the mysterious Jago Kellaway.
Once Ellen arrives on the Far Island the story really gets going. Ellen is drawn to Jago, but she constantly feels as if he is hiding some side of himself. As time passes Ellen falls in love with the island and Jago. Everything seems to be coming up roses; until a trip to a friend of her deceased father reveals a shocking secret that Jago has been keeping from her.
Now Ellen must try to figure out if Jago is truly in love with her as he claims, or if his motives for getting close to her are far more sinister.
"Lord of the Far Island" is a well-written and exciting book with an ending that will shock readers - I never saw it coming! The relationship between Jago and Ellen is expertly rendered, and Holt does a fantastic job of showing the true to life emotions that Ellen feels when she finally finds her place in the world. This book will leave readers sated and satisfied and I most definitely recommend it.

Interesting, But No Consistent Theme or Conclusions

Kris Hollingworth's book Wolves, Jackals, and Foxes is a good read about 20th century assassinations. The reading is quick and the stories are told with as light a touch as one can when dealing with the subject matter.

The book is episodic; each chapter focuses on a different assassination, and there is no real overarching theme here. Assassins are generally identified by Hollingsworth by motive: political or governmental (wolves), terrorists or power (jackals), or notoriety (foxes). However, the incidents in the book are not grouped into sections. And, despite the categorizations, Hollingsworth doesn't delve much into the psychology of the assassins mentioned or reach any real conclusions; the stories are mostly "this happened, then something else happened." I didn't notice any real political slant as another reviewer found.

My favorite installments dealt with an attempted assassination of Harry S. Truman, and the possible assassination of Josef Stalin (it has not been conclusively proven that Lavrenti Beria actually poisoned him). The story about ETA bombers actually watching "Day of the Jackal" together at a theater also had some gallows humor about it.

If you can get past the stop-and-go nature of the book, it's a pretty decent read on a very interesting subject.

Careful with reviews on this one

Did any of the reviewers, at least by the time of this review, actually read the book? If so I have to say they are dramatically slanted. Most of the best reviews seem to be from people on the left while the worst reviews seem to be from people on right. The rest seem to get some things wrong which is why I question.

For example on reviewer wrote "Anastasio Somoza, dictator of Nicaragua, was killed in 1980, not the "1950s" as the author states" This is not true. There where two Anastasio Somoza's that ruled Nicaragura. Anastasio Somoza Garcia is the one the author refers to in the 1950's assassination on page 34; he was assassinated in 1956. Anastasio Somoza Debayle was assassinated in September of 1980 of which the author makes clear on page 226.

Others have stated a leftest view point. What viewpoint? He had a viewpoint? I did not even see a conclusion much less a viewpoint? I personally think people are just inserting their own political viewpoints when it come to this. I really do not think the author here was even going for any real viewpoint or conclusion to be honest, which I must say was a little disappointing, but not a deal breaker for me given I thought this book would just be a overview and not a real academic work.

Those are just some of the examples of reviews here that seem to be misleading. However that is not say there is not some truth to some of them. The book is a fun read and the events are accurate in what and how it happened based on what is available regarding the events in this book. I will say the syntax is a bit much. Maybe because of the difference in dialect or something. I swear one more "albeit" and I'll puke:)

The book is what it is. Fun, pulls no punches, is not meant to be academic in real way much less to be even critiqued in that way. It seems to be mainly for those who are new to this type of topic.

If you want a book that just gives you the what and how that is fun; than this is it. If your looking for a serious full on academic read on the topic of assassination look elsewhere.

Terrific sense of irony

There is an undercurrent of irony throughout the book, and the author is definitely present in the conversation, i.e., expressing sardonic sense of humor. I found it to be relatively equally distributed across political boundaries, no one escapes the quips.

Perfect for school

I had to use this textbook in my AP English class for the 2012/13 school year. I left my original textbook in a rental car and never got it back, so I ordered this one. EXTREMELY affordable and in great condition. There were some notes jotted down on some pages, but they were nothing less than helpful! Great find. Thanks!
