The Cow-Tail Switch: And Other West African Stories, by Harold Courlander, George Herzog

"The stories of West Africa are about men and animals, about kings, warriors, and hunters. They tell about clever people and stupid people, about good ones and bad ones, about how things and animals got to be how they are. Sometimes they are just tall tales. There are stories about Frog, Rabbit, Turtle, Guinea Fowl, and all the other animals that West Africans know. Some of the stories make you think. Some make you laugh.
Here are some of the stories of the people of the forests, the seacoast, the hills, and the plains.
The people of West Africa give them to you."

“An unusually fine collection of folk tales told simply, directly, and with beauty.” ―School Library Journal

About the Author

As a young man, Harold Courlander (1908-1996) took a trip to Haiti with the intention of doing research for a novel. He discovered his lifelong passion, anthropology, which led him to further travels and research into Native Americans, Asians, Indians, and numerous African tribes. He preserved the history of these people in his many books of folklore and history.

George Herzog (1901–1983) was a musicologist and anthropologist specializing in Native American music. Like Courlander, he was intent on preserving the heritage of people, particularly through their music.

Madye Lee Chastain (1908-1989) wrote 17 children's books and illustrated many more.

Notable collection of African Folktales
By Ein Kunde
Looking for African folktales? Look first to the work of Harold Courlander. He is one of the finest folktale anthropologists of his generation. "The Cow-Tail Switch and Other West African Stories" is one several of his books which are of interest to Africanists. (He also authored several similar books of folktales and traditional literature from other parts of the world.) In 1947 when "The Cow-Tail Switch and Other West African Stories" was first published, there were far fewer books of this kind than there are today. Two things that make Courlander's work stand out, even now, are: 1) his well written prose, and 2) the notes, which give the reader more information about the story, where it came from, and how to understand it in the context of the culture that produced it. This second point is especially important today, when a lot of books of so-called "African" stories are published without any background information at all. This collection of stories, all from Western Africa, is great for kids and adults. (Harold Courlander is also the author of "The African", which bears many similarities to "Roots" by Alex Haley, though Haley's book was published years later.)

This book has 17 African legends, many of them are funny.
By A Customer
I reviewed one of the many stories from this book, The Cow Tail Switch, which is the cover story.
One day in the village of Kundi there was a brave hunter named Ogaloussa. He had to go out to hunt because he had 6 sons and one on the way. He knew they would eat a lot. The first day he had not come home the family was a little worried but not that much. After a week and 3 months of waiting for him they began to really worry. Then the baby was born and they named him Puli. Puli's first words were " Where is my father?" Another son said, "Yes, where is our father?" "I saw which direction he went," said another son.
So the 6 sons set off to find their father. They found him dead with his body parts everywhere. One son said could he put his bones back together and another said he could put the flesh on. "We are not done," yelled another son, "He needs blood and I will give him some." "I can give him breath," said another son. "We are still not done," protested another son. "I will give him the power of movement." "I can give him the power of speech," said the last son and they put him back together.
The sons brought Ogaloussa back to the village and everyone was happy to see him. The next day he made a very nice beaded cow tail and was going to give it to one of his sons. He ended up giving it to Puli who first asked, "Where is my father?" I would rate this story a 7.8 on a scale of 1-10 because it is a great story. I also liked this story because it was interesting how they put him back together

Black Protest and the Great Migration: A Brief History with Documents (Bedford Cultural Editions Series), by Eric Arnesen

During World War I, as many as half a million southern African Americans permanently left the South to create new homes and lives in the urban North, and hundreds of thousands more would follow in the 1920s. This dramatic transformation in the lives of many black Americans involved more than geography: the increasingly visible “New Negro” and the intensification of grassroots black activism in the South as well as the North were the manifestations of a new challenge to racial subordination. Eric Arnesen’s unique collection of articles from a variety of northern, southern, black, and white newspapers, magazines, and books explores the “Great Migration,” focusing on the economic, social, and political conditions of the Jim Crow South, the meanings of race in general — and on labor in particular — in the urban North, the grassroots movements of social protest that flourished in the war years, and the postwar “racial counterrevolution.” An introduction by the editor, headnotes to documents, a chronology, questions for consideration, a bibliography, and an index are included.

Review
"Black Protest and the Great Migration is outstanding. Its strengths are several, including its scope, the richness of the documents, and Arnesen's superb introduction and editorial interventions."

"This is a well-conceived, important, and highly original volume that will allow instructors to seriously address issues of African American resistance and agency, the reproduction of white racism, and the origins not only of the modern civil rights movement but also of institutionalized racism."

The Trap, by John Smelcer

Seventeen-year-old Johnny Least-Weasel knows that his grandfather Albert is a stubborn old man and won't stop checking his own traplines even though other men his age stopped doing so years ago. But Albert Least-Weasel has been running traplines in the Alaskan wilderness alone for the past sixty years. Nothing has ever gone wrong on the trail he knows so well. When Albert doesn't come back from checking his traps, with the temperature steadily plummeting, Johnny must decide quickly whether to trust his grandfather or his own instincts. Written in alternating chapters that relate the parallel stories of Johnny and his grandfather, this novel poignantly addresses the hardships of life in the far north, suggesting that the most dangerous traps need not be made of steel.

From School Library Journal
Grade 6-9–Johnny Least-Weasel worries that his grandfather hasn't returned home from checking his trapline. The elderly Indian packed ample supplies onto his snowmobile, but has been out far too long in the plummeting temperatures of the Alaskan winter. Cultural pride and reluctance to disrespect an elder get in the way of search plans until Johnny's grandmother can wait no longer, and she sends him out to find her husband. Only readers know that Albert Least-Weasel has caught his leg in a trap, several feet away from his supplies, and is unable to free himself. Chapters alternate between Albert's dilemma and Johnny's failed attempts to raise concern among his uncles, creating a suspenseful page-turner in which the old man's survival becomes a race against time. Albert's wilderness skills are sharp and described in detail, such as fending off wolves with a spear made from a cedar branch and creating a rabbit snare from a shoelace. Excerpts from a folktale about a warrior named Blackskin appear at the beginning of each chapter, illustrating how present-day life for the Least-Weasel family is still the same, in many ways, as it was for their ancestors. A great addition to survival/adventure collections or Native American fiction.–Vicki Reutter, Cazenovia High School, NY

Review of The Trap
By Nancy A. Caldwell
This book is a must read. It is an excellent, original, and compelling story, written authentically, that is told in the voice of an old-fashioned story teller. I liked its simplicity, as though the book itself were a part of Alaska's landscape, its portrayal of nature's indifference. And how the book spotlights family relationships. Also, the Indian mystical stories that begin each chapter juxtaposed with reality, really bring it home. Read it, you won't be disappointed.

Wolves, Cold, or Fear?
By imaloserdude
If you got caught in a trap that you had laid, and you couldn't escape, what would you do? If it was cold outside, below freezing, way, way below freezing, and wolves were threatening, could you focus on staying alive, doing what is necessary to survive another day? Or, would you panic like a wild beast, gnaw through your leg when faced with the possibility of death?

The Trap is a captivating story, the two main characters so real, the dangers so intense. I found myself telling the grandfather and his grandson what to do. I felt as if I were there, in Alaska, feeling the cold and the wind and the steel, hearing the wolves, sensing the dangers. It was simply written, jumping back and forth between the isolated grandfather who was in danger and the concerned grandson who wanted to help those he loved.

How does it end? Does the grandson arrive in time to save his grandfather? Read the story and find out...

This follow-up to Morris's 2005 The Naked Woman rambles aimlessly around each part of the male body, beginning with hair and working down to the feet, jumping from evolutionary matters to strange, tangentially related social ones. Discussing the mouth, for instance, Morris begins with the unusually fleshy human lip, proceeds to the teeth and soon digresses to why women visit the dentist more often than men and the latest trends in false teeth. Bits and pieces of the book are entertaining, but Morris regularly falls back on anecdotes rather than scientific evidence for his arguments. And while he espouses equality for both women and homosexuals, he can still express the view that it is men, not women, who have been driven on by their genetically installed ambitions actually to take the great steps necessary to build our towering civilisations. And current scientific evidence runs counter to his view that from an evolutionary standpoint, there is only one valid biological lifestyle for the human male and that is heterosexual. Morris's writing is simple (perhaps too simple), clear and occasionally entertains, but it makes for poor science. Photos. (Aug.)

A Wonderful Book
By Frank Ramirez
From the onset, I must warn people not to rely too much on the "Reed Review." For example, they never state what's "poor science" or for that matter "good science." If they were PROPER scientists, they would understand that science is not dogma and is open to different view points-provided that those view points cohere to a set of standards-Morris has spent his entire career trying to understand the human animal, and we are very lucky that he shares his wisdom with us.

For the charge that his view point is "hetrosexual," I have to say that's foolish. Morris is not a bigot, and throughout this book he presents his view that reproduction is the main purpose of evolution-which it is-but he never once bashes homosexuality. And to make sure the readers of my review understand, I am a homosexual, and I didn't feel offended by Morris' book. What does offend me, is a review that is so "politically correct," that it comes off as compassionate, when it's just ignorance and outdated thinking.

The book doesn't ramble into one area after another, which I suppose shows that who ever supplied the review, hasn't read the book. It's rather structured and focuses on one body part after another, much like his previous book "The Naked Woman."

So in short, read the book for yourself, but never rely upon the "Reed Review."

excellently written, no pictures though
By Grace Defloreis
I thought by the title this book would have more pictures of the male physique. Having studied anatomy for over 17 years I was invariably drawn to "the naked man" and although I did find it enlightening, was different than expected. Desmond Morris integrates biology and history with a touch of sexual overtone throughout his chapters, diversifying the reasons why nature created the human male form the way it is, right down to the last detail. Although he does a retouch on anthropology, it's not a primary focus, instead choosing a more basic "head, shoulders, knees and toes" sort of thing for any eighth-grader to understand. The combination of man vs. nature is clearly absent in his theories, pointing a finger directly at sex and shifting the blame from survival of the fittest to sexual selection. An amazing journey that can turn you on to the radical phallic dimensions man has undergone over the years.

Fine Book, Strange Ending
By Jakob
If you've read The Naked Woman, I must warn you that he repeats a lot of the things he said in that book (due to the fact that men and women do have some similarities). Otherwise, it is a nice book. The only bit which irks me is the last chapter of the book, where he offers an almost Freudian interpretation of homosexuality. It doesn't urk me because it offends me (I care for the truth no matter how it may hurt me or offend others), but because it seems completely wrong. I'm not a biologist, so take my word with a grain of salt, but I see no reason to believe that homosexuals are homosexual because they didn't outgrow a phase in their youth (which is what he suggests).

The Wedding Girl, by Madeleine Wickham

At the age of eighteen, in that first golden Oxford summer, Milly was up for anything. Rupert and his American lover, Allan, were an important part of her new, exciting life, so when Rupert suggested to her that she and Allan should get married to keep Allan in the country, Milly didn’t hesitate.

Ten years later, Milly is a very different person and engaged to Simon—who is wealthy, serious, and believes her to be perfect. Milly’s secret history is locked away so securely she has almost persuaded herself that it doesn’t exist—until, only four days before her elaborate wedding. To have and to hold takes on a whole new meaning when one bride’s past catches up with her and bring the present crashing down.

With her trademark style of keen insight, and razor sharp wit, Madeleine Wickham introduces her fanatical fan-base, plus a host of new readers to a fresh and irresistible heroine in The Wedding Girl.

From Publishers Weekly
The usually reliable Wickham (Shopaholic series author Sophie Kinsella's alter ego) falters with this overplotted and heavy-handed smorgasbord of weddings and family shenanigans. Upon meeting wedding photographer Alexander Gilbert, Milly Havill realizes that he had photographed her when she first married 10 years earlier. Since that wedding was done as a favor to help keep Allan Kepinski, the American half of a gay couple, in England, Milly never told anyone about it, including her now-fiancé, Simon Pinnacle. The thought of Alexander revealing her past sends Milly into a panic. But that's just the beginning: Simon is bent on bettering his multimillionaire father in business and in marriage; Milly's bitter father, James, seems to appreciate Milly's independent older sister, Isobel, more than Milly; Isobel gets pregnant and is certain the father would not want a baby; and Rupert, the other half of the couple Milly had helped out, is now a born-again Christian. Unfortunately, the characters' struggles with identity, abortion and homosexuality are filtered through strained prose and too-obvious setups. A lighter touch and a tighter story would have helped. Delightful, insightful & a pleasure to read
By E. Griffin
What if your wedding was just a few days away, and a secret from your past suddenly reappears? Just a little sin of omission, something you forgot to tell anyone? This is what happens to Milly, when her wedding photographer is the same person who took casual photos of her as a bride ten years ago, a wedding that she never told anyone about. This was a marriage of convenience with a virtual stranger, and when Milly lost contact with the groom, she decided she could push the entire event far enough out of her mind to make it never exist.

Milly's secret does get told, and she ends up in a maelstrom of hurt feelings and confusion, staring with her fiancée, Simon. The only son of a self-made wealthy man, Simon struggles with inadequacy and was determined to do one thing better than his father--have the perfect wedding. Milly's mother has been frantically planning the wedding, with much vicarious pleasure in Milly's wealthy future. Meanwhile, Milly's Dad is struggling with a mid-life crisis and her sister Isobel is facing a life changing decision of her own.

In parallel to Milly's personal challenges, she sets off to find her first husband and secure a divorce. This sub-plot adds an entirely different element to The Wedding Girl (no spoiler here!), and adds valuable elements to the story and to development of the characters.

The Wedding Girl is a delightful story with a good mix of happy and sad that will cause the reader to think and enjoy. I always enjoy books by Madeline Wickham aka Sophie Kinsella, and The Wedding Girl reminds me why I look forward to each one being released in the USA.

SO Darn Cute!
By Amy Cluck
I am loving this book - its definitely one of my favorite sewing books on the market right now. First of all, the title doesn't lie, these are some seriously cute projects, folks. Almost a lethal dose of cute. Not in a bad way. The book is beautifully laid out - love the gingham and polka dots! Jenny's fabric choices are brilliant - I especially love the fact that she used vintage fabrics and pillowcases, with a little bit of cute Japanese fabric thrown in.

The book begins with a bio/ introduction as most craft books do, then goes into tools and techniques. I'm excited to find that I have a lot of these tools already (bias tape maker and yo-yo maker) - but I don't know how to use them so I'm excited to learn. Next there's a bit on free-motion quilting and some other "basics" like sewing a zippered pocket. Jenny promises it's not as hard as it looks and I believe her, which is half the battle, I think. If you are a more advanced seamstress, you might skip this part. If you are a more advanced seamstress, you might skip this part.

Most of the projects seem easy enough for a beginner so I'm excited to try them. The instructions and patterns are clear and easy to follow. I am loving the necklace tank, fabric button necklace, and reversible headband in the Pretties section. The eyeglasses cozy and appliqued tote are also a couple of my favorites, as is the merit badge wristlet (genius!), in the Totables section. In the Nest section, I am eager to make the Happy Hostess Dishtowels. Another section for Kid's Stuff includes instructions for a Silly Snake that reminds me of a puzzle my dad made me when I was younger. It also gives you a new use for shrunken sweaters. The Square Bear is also adorable and I love the fact that Jenny incorporates embroidery and vintage buttons. One last section called Crafties includes a crochet hook cozy that makes me want to learn to crochet and a Nifty Needle Book that I really need for my embroidery needles. I love how the projects are not only cute but practical.

I read another review that accused this book of being un-hip and to that I say "un-true!" Ok, so I'm not the coolest kid on the block but I do keep up with the latest handmade fashions and as far as I can tell, cute is definitely "in." Besides, if you don't like Jenny's use of mellow fabrics, you can always substitute color combos like black and hot pink or skull prints. Plus the cover gives a good indication of whether the projects will fit your personal style. Personally, I love them.

Lives up to the title!
By Kathy Cano-Murillo
Jenny's Ryan's new sewing book certainly lives up to the title! The projects are absolutely adorable, classic, and hip all rolled into one! Not only does she offer 30 patterns of perfection, she also demonstrates how to use contrasting textures to add even more personality to the projects. Each page is loaded with tips in a super-friendly tone. I'm excited to share this book with my teen daughter to make some fabulous new accessories!!! Way to go, Jenny!

Overly Simplistic
By Emilie A.
I was really disappointed with this book.

Although it was filled with beautiful photographs, the designs and patterns themselves were so totally elementary that I am pretty sure you could google and find a free pattern for everything featured. For example, sewing coasters? It's 2 pieces of square fabric sewn together and then top-stitched.

Perhaps a VERY new and beginner level seamstress might like this, or a very young teenager, but to have an entire page dedicated to cutting a letter out of fabric and sewing it onto a white tee shirt seemed like a cop out.

My Hero: Military Kids Write About Their Moms and DadsFrom St. Martin's Press

Working through the Armed Services YMCA, Alan Appel and Mike Rothmiller have collected more than 100 essays from children whose parents are serving or have served in the military. The children’s heartfelt, moving, sometimes funny, and completely honest observations about their moms and dads truly capture the emotional connection between parent and child.  It is a connection that cannot be severed even when a parent is thousands of miles away, gone for long stretches of time, and in danger.
Inspiring, heartbreaking, and genuine, this book provides a fascinating look inside the hearts and minds of kids who love and honor their moms and dads as heroes - at home or on the battlefield.

Allen Appel is the author of five novels and the successful series, Thanks Mom and Thanks Dad.  Mike Rothmiller is the author of the bestselling non-fiction book, L.A. Secret Police.

Grade 5 Up—Adults will both laugh and cry while reading the more than 100 short paragraphs written by kids whose parents are serving in the military. In some cases, a parent has died in the line of duty and the child is praising the parent's memory with touching and heartfelt sentiments. One child poignantly mentions, "My dad is like a puzzle piece to me. Without him, nothing works properly; nothing fits like it should. He makes me feel safe." Another child lauds his mother, who has been accepted into an officer program to become an Air Force nurse because she wants to take care of all the wounded soldiers coming home from the war. Original line drawings decorate the pages. There is a preface written by General H. Norman Schwarzkopf as well as comments from three former presidents—Jimmy Carter, George H. W. Bush, and Bill Clinton. While the contributors range in age from 6 to 13, this is really a book for adults, who will appreciate these children's deep feelings.—Blair Christolon, Prince William Public Library System, Manassas, VA

Review

“My Hero paints an intimate portrait of the personal thoughts and emotions felt by these children.  It clearly demonstrates, without reservation, the immense pride, honor, and unselfishness of our nation’s military children and their families.”
-Jimmy Carter, 39th President of the United States of America

“This book illustrates a wonderfully accurate picture of what the children of our military personnel go through when a parent is deployed.  Their essays are simple and honest expressions of grief and sadness mixed with a tremendous sense of family pride and unparalleled patriotism.
-George H. W. Bush, 41st President of the United States of America

“With this heartwarming collection of essays and artwork, the many mothers and fathers in the United States military can take comfort knowing how much their service means to their families. Each work in this volume was created with one beloved family member in mind, but taken together, they form a touching tribute to all of those parents, past and present, who have served our country so faithfully.”
-William Jefferson Clinton, 42nd President of the United States of America

Short stories from military kids about their parents
By DosLady
As I read this book, I began to understand the simple, incredible words from kids whose parents are in the military.

Each has their own individual portrait of how they feel and how they honor 'their hero' that serves our country. Those bonds of love stretch hundreds of miles. Their limited time spent together is truly embedded to carry them through this most difficult time.

This book profoundly expresses the honor these children feel.

AMAZING!!!
By K. Reckard
We are watching child whose mother is deployed to Iraq. We ordered this book and included our own stories throughout the book for her to enjoy. We all cried putting it together and she cried reading it. It is the perfect gift for your soldier.

This is the real deal
By Earth Girl
I read this book and cried my eyes out because as a dual military family (both husband and I are serving) we have heard our children say and write alot of these things. This book is a tear jerker, but certainly worth every tear.
