Tate's greatest wish is to keep the mutt that has strayed into her family's yard: "Mam and Pap hadn't said I could keep her," confides Tate, the narrator. "But they hadn't said I couldn't, either." The plot is familiar--Mam doesn't like dogs, Pap is sympathetic but stern, and when neighbors start complaining about the dog, Mam and Pap find it a new home, far away. Hesse, however, makes the story seem fresh. A few deft references evoke the setting, rural New England in the indeterminate past, and skillful use of easy-to-read language supplies the color (Mam, for example, doesn't simply bake bread; instead, "The muscles worked in her long back as her fist kneaded dough"). Tate herself is appealingly resourceful and determined, and the obstacles in her path are neither entirely predictable nor too neatly hurdled. Each chapter swings the reader through a spectrum of emotions and a comfortable surge of expectation. Ages 7-9.

Grade 3-5-A starving dog is the catalyst that propels Tate, 10, toward adulthood. Plot and characterization effortlessly evolve through her narration, which is as honest and direct as the character herself. Her simple language is filled with images of rural New England. She describes her struggle to keep the stray, which begins as soon as the exhausted animal appears on her porch. Even though her mother is terrified of dogs, Tate quickly wraps her life around her new-found pet, whose ears are as soft as sable. However, the canine's wandering ways and stealing bring complaints from neighbors. Mam demands that Sable leave, and Pap finds her a good home with Doc Winston, whose land is surrounded by a high stone fence. Desolate but determined to win Sable back, Tate designs, buys the materials for, and builds her own fence. Weeks later, she visits Doc Winston and learns that the animal has disappeared. With the loss of Sable, Tate's focus shifts to helping her family; in turn, her father accepts her as an apprentice in his woodworking shop. An exceptional dog story-with a happy ending- whose length and pencil illustrations, one per chapter, make it attractive to young readers.

a touching story

Ten year old Tate Marshall lives with her Pap, a cabinet-maker, Mam, and Mam’s crimp-tailed cat Eden, in rural Vermont. Tate is lonely and wants a dog, but Mam hates dogs because she was torn up by one when she was a little girl. Then one October day a scrawny mutt turns up in the yard. It is dark brown except for a blaze of white on her chest and the tip of her tail. Tate names her Sable because her soft ears remind the girl of the sable fur trim on her Mam’s sweater.

Tate even persuades Mam and Pap to let her keep Sable. However, it isn’t long before the incorrigible dog begins to cause trouble by stealing from the neighbors. They complain to the Selectmen, and Mam and Pap decide that the dog must go, so Pap takes her to the home of Doctor Winston in Concord, NH, where he is installing some cabinets. The doctor says that Tate can come and see Sable at any time. A little later, Tate gets permission to hitch a ride with their neighbor, Mr. Cobb who has business in Concord, but when she arrives, she learns that Sable has run away. What will happen to Sable? Will Tate ever see her dog again?

Most books like this involve a boy and his dog, but this one is about a girl and her dog, though it should appeal to everyone. It is truly a touching story. Tate’s attitude is not always the best, but her reactions to various situations are perfectly natural, and everything works out all right in the end. Publishers Weekly calls it a “superbly structured work,” and the School Library Journal says that the narration “is as honest and direct as the character herself.” Young children who have dogs or have ever wanted to get a dog will appreciate this chapter book. The pencil-sketch pictures by illustrator Marcia Sewall, one per chapter, are quite homey.

Tugs at Your Heart

From early on I knew this was going to be a page-turner. I don't know if today's city-suburban children will be as moved by this realistic fiction as an ol' country boy, but I used up several facial tissues before I finished my read...at one sitting. Yes, I remember mam and pap for mon and pop and other country colloquialisms throughout.

The suspense is high, the drama very emotional, and the characters so realistic you feel you're among them via the reading. I read to primary and middle school classes and there are certain books that are just too emotional for me to read, and this is one--a colleague has to read such books for me.

The Creative Teacher: Activities for Language Arts (Grades 4 through 8 and Up)

The reading level is said to be grade 3 (ages 8-9), but the interest level will reach to adult; hey, some of us still enjoy picture books! (This book was originally published in 1994.)

Interesting

This is an interesting account of the murder of dentist John Yelenic. The author does a great job of delving into all aspects of the victim's life and the state trooper situation...but he left me wishing for much more when it came to the dentist's estranged wife, Michele.

Carlton Smith is one of my favorite true crime authors, but I felt he wasn't as objective here as he usually is in his storytelling. And he is guilty of lots of repetition. But overall, I enjoyed the book and would recommend it.

As for the reviewers complaining about the denouement being revealed early..this isn't a whodunit..it's a true crime novel..very few of which keep you guessing til the end.

A Good Read

This is an interesting true life crime thriller. Despite the fact that the reveal occurred fairly early in the book, I couldn't put this one down, I guess any murder that features lots of sex, greed, adultery, and lots of money is a winning formula for a book or a movie. Face it, if this was a book about a simple murder/robbery with no underlying motives, I doubt if anyone would care.
This book was extremely detailed. I never found it boring and the layers of information combined with element of suspense and character development kept me reading. While not the calibre of an Ann Rule true crime tome, this was well written and well worth the time invested.

DR. Yelenic and his Mother, Mary Lois were life long friends and mentors of mine. I was glad to see that this book reflected their integrity despite the circumstances that were thrown upon them.

Gordianus the Finder, Saylor's world-weary sleuth, strives to keep aloof from the complex politics of republican Rome. After years of investigative work for Cicero, Crassus, and others, Gordianus has become a gentleman farmer in Etruria, where he contends with more commonplace problems like drought and conniving neighbors. Suddenly Gordianus finds himself pulled back into Roman politics, and headless bodies begin to turn up on his farm. Saylor ( Arms of Nemesis , St. Martin's, 1992) carefully plots this novel and accurately depicts Roman society; his attentive study of Roman history and culture is evident throughout. The characters are believable and well delineated. Some minor criticisms: Saylor does not always take care to present historical data naturally, and several overlong conversations on Roman politics interrupt the flow of the story and are in fact historical minilectures directed at the reader. Nevertheless, this is recommended for general collections.

To his chagrin, Gordianus finds he can't escape the intrigues and influences of the city as easily as he had hoped. He becomes embroiled in a bitter political rivalry between his patron, Cicero, and a clever up-and-comer, Catilina. Saylor has written a sweeping and marvelously evocative story, with page after page of authentic detail and meticulous descriptions of the people, places, and politics of early Rome. If there's a fault, it's the overemphasis on ambience and atmosphere, leaving a story that's occasionally slow to develop. There's no doubt that history buffs will savor the splendid historical detail, but mystery fans looking primarily for fast pacing and lots of action may lose interest. Emily Melton

Great addition to the series

Gordianus is back in Steven Saylor third installment in his Roma Sub Rosa series. This book has a little of everything from poltical intrigue to mystery. Gordianus who inherits a farm in the Etruscan courtyside is leaving the corruption of Rome for the quietness of living in a different atmosphere. No matter where Gordianus lives, trouble always follows him. In this story there is a new character by the name of Marcus Caelius who is a protege of Cicero. He is there to ask Gordianus for help to keep an eye on Catilina who is trying to bring the Roman Republic to choas and revolution. As the story unfolds, there is a headless body discovered in his estate that makes it hard for him to find the culprit. As Catilina makes his presence, the story takes off in his attiude towards Cicero who seems to be at his decruction in the political area. Meto who is Gordianus adopted son who has sympathy for Catlina's views and becomes close to him, as he see's Cicero as a demigod. Gordianus is caught in the middle between two ambitions politican who believes in there views are the only way of saving the Roman Republic. I like this story for it's well develop characters and good drama.

Historical Genius

Catilina's Riddle is an excellent and very different historical novel. As a former history major and student of Latin who loves detective novels, I found Catilina's Riddle compelling.
This novel appears to be another investigation of Gordianus the Finder but it is so much more. The real inquiry in Catilina's Riddle is psychological rather than legal. It presents the historical, political and sociological tussle between the forces of Cicero, noted advocate and orator, and Catilina, a charismatic rebel who seeks control of the Roman republic. The struggles portrayed in the book are carefully researched and written. Saylor mined the speeches of Cicero and Catilina and analyzed many ancient writings of the period to uncover minute details of the events. Most of the activity takes place at or near Gordianus' rural estate, but the events transform the Roman state.

In this novel Gordianus grows in wisdom and self-awareness. His major mission is to function as a host for Catilina and a spy for Cicero. His primary task, however, is learning to understand the elusive Catilina, abide his contentious neighbors, and tolerate members of his own household. Gordianus grapples with his own inward anxieties.
He relocated to an Etruscan farm to escape the pressures and chaos of Rome only to have the struggles follow him. Having uprooted his family he confronts their difficulties adapting to a new culture. City breed, Gordianus anguishes with the administration of a farm.

For a lover of history this is one of the most researched and footnoted historical novels ever written. For those who enjoy mysteries Catilina's Riddle is subtle but engrossing. For anyone who likes studying people and personalities, Saylor's descriptions of characters is intriguing. For people who love puzzles this novel is full of baffling perplexities.

Beatrix Potter (1866–1943), creator of the immortal Peter Rabbit, is known as an avid writer of comical illustrated letters to friends and as an assertive marketer of her illustrations, and this lively volume also captures her energetic participation in Victorian-era natural history research and conservation. Environmental historian Lear (Rachel Carson: Witness for Nature) relates that, as a child in an upper-middle-class family, Potter sketched flowers, dead animals and live lizards, insects and rodents that she brought home. "Rabbits were caught, tamed, sketched, painted" by young Beatrix and her brother, Bertram. In 1893, while traveling with her pet rabbit, Peter Piper, and seeking unusual fungi with self-taught mycologist Charles McIntosh, Potter jotted an illustrated note "about a disobedient young rabbit called 'Peter' " to an ailing child friend and sketched Peter's nemesis, a McIntosh–look-alike farmer called Mr. McGregor, creating "two fictional characters that one day would be world-famous." Lear judges Potter "a brilliant amateur" naturalist who expressed strong convictions about land preservation. Potter's witty journals, with their close observations of people, animals, objects and places, serve as the basis for Lear's engrossing account, which will appeal to ecologists, historians, child lit buffs and those who want to know the real Squirrel Nutkin, Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle and Benjamin Bunny. *Starred Review* Beatrix Potter had a passion for place that found aesthetic expression in the beautifully realized natural settings of her celebrated children's books (The Tale of Peter Rabbit, etc.) and also practical expression in her less-well-known role as a successful landowner, farm manager, and sheep breeder. Accordingly, Lear, who is a professor of environmental history, gives special attention to the places that provided the settings for Potter's books and for her real-life evolution as a shrewd businesswoman and ardent preservationist of the rural landscape of her beloved Lake District (when she died in 1943, she left vast holdings of land and property to Britain's National Trust). The social settings and circumstances of Potter's early life as a Victorian child of sometimes stultifying privilege are also beautifully realized. And Lear's depiction of Potter's later struggle for personal and financial independence invests an otherwise quiet life with drama and even a degree of suspense. Potter was a famously close observer of the world around her, and Lear is an equally close observer of her subject. The result is a meticulously researched and brilliantly re-created life that, despite its length and accretion of detail, is endlessly fascinating and often illuminating. The Real Miss Potter

If you have fond memories of the Tale of Peter Rabbit from your childhood; or if you have an interest in women who bravely challenged a social destiny that seemed foregone and inevitable; or if you are interested in naturalism and the history of preservation, you will enjoy and learn from Beatrix Potter: A Life in Nature, by environmental historian Linda Lear.

Beatrix Potter was born in London in 1866 to wealthy Victorian parents. From early childhood, she was passionately interested in the natural world and drew what she saw in meticulous, painstaking detail, using as models the many animals that she and her brother collected during family holidays. These animal drawings became increasingly imaginative until they at last came to life in the delightful characters that populate The Tale of Peter Rabbit, The Tale of Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle, The Tale of Jemima Puddle-Duck and other books, all of which became phenomenal bestsellers.

In 1905, after the death of her fiancé and editor, Norman Warne, Potter used the royalties from her books and a small inheritance from an aunt to purchase a farm in the hamlet of Near Sawrey, in the Lake District. There, she met Willie Heelis, a country lawyer who in 1913 became her husband, and together they set about fulfilling a dream they shared: preserving and protecting the Lake District from the despoliation of commercial development. They lived and worked happily together until 1943, when Beatrix Potter Heelis died.

Beatrix Potter: A Life in Nature is the most exhaustive and rigorous examination of Potter's life to date. Linda Lear skillfully covers the material that's been been made available by earlier biographers, Margaret Lane and Judy Taylor: the solitary childhood, the astonishing literary success, the dutiful attention to elderly parents, the retirement to marriage and rural farming life. But Lear breaks a good deal of new ground, as well, taking us deep into the experience of a gifted but very private woman with a "talent for reinventing herself." She not only tells the riveting story of a woman who seems to have led three lives, but also fully and meticulously documents her sources. Scholars will appreciate the endnotes, sources, references, and lists of primary and secondary material that Lear has provided, for it is the first time in the history of Potter scholarship that such a full and complete documentation has been made.

However, Lear never allows her responsibilities as a scholar to overshadow her fascination with the human story of Beatrix Potter. With tact, sensitivity, and a profound respect, she goes deeply within her subject to bring us a woman whose tragedies and triumphs seem very personal, compellingly immediate, and entirely real. Lear demonstrates that throughout Potter's long life, her imagination was fueled by a passion for nature, whether this was expressed in drawings of rabbits in blue coats with brass buttons, or in paintings of fungi, lovingly rendered, or in her love for the tenacious Herdwick sheep that populated the hills of the Lake District, or in her profound admiration for the traditional Lakeland lifeways of farmers and artisans. Within the larger context of environmental history that this biography provides, it is easy to see why and how Beatrix Potter became one of England's most important preservationists and greatest benefactors, leaving some 4,300 acres, including 15 farms, dozens of cottages, houses, and over 500 acres of woods to the National Trust. It was a magnificent gift, a model for gifts to come, and still, to this day, unique.

Sets a high standard for the biography genre

This is the book we've been waiting for: the definitive chronicle of Beatrix Potter's life. Here we read -- with pleasure -- the details of her life, revealed many times in her own words in letters to friends, relatives, and publishing business associates. The woman who created the tale of Peter Rabbit in an illustrated letter to a favorite child was much more than a children's book author. She grew into a headstrong, independent woman who became a sheep farmer and who fell in love with England's Lake District and helped to save thousands of acres of it in conjunction with the National Trust. Hers is a miraculous story that should be shared, especially with teens who are feeling stifled by controlling parents. This is the sort of book that you almost don't want to finish because you don't want the visit to be over. We are just now realizing what an interesting person Beatrix Potter Heelis was! Thank you, Ms. Lear!

Splendid book about an amazing person

Beatrix Potter led a far more interesting life that I could have imagined. Raised as a proper young lady, she was assigned by her parents as the manager of their household. She was in charge of the servants and responsible to be sure that everything was done properly and well.

So while she was doing this, she studied (by herself of course, who would let a girl go to school) and became a rather reknown mycologist, making the breakthrough observation that lichens were a symbiotic relationship between fungi and algae. She was proposed to be a member of the student body at the Royal Botanical Gardens at Kew. But, of course, as a mere female she was turned down.

So beginning to make some drawings, and writing a few stories she became the J.K. Rowling of her time when she published a book 'The Tale of Peter Rabbit.' She went on to publish another 22 books, and to create a merchandising empire about the characters.

Making yet another switch in later life, she became a gentleman farmer, raising prizewinning sheep and cattle.

Ms. Lear has not only done a splendid job in writing this book, she deserves our thanks.

Wild Sudoku

Will Shortz sudoku books are the very best for avid fans. The format is user-friendly -- large, well-marked grids. The puzzles themselves are great and, in this book, quite ingenious. I highly recommend this book.

My favorite sukoku book

If you like medium puzzles that can be solved with some reasoning and no pencil marks, or very few, this is for you. When I came to the end of this book, I wondered where I could find another this good. Then it came to me: just get another copy of this book! I am now on my third. Still loving it.

DANIEL JUDSON, a Shamus Award winner and a three-time finalist, is the author of five previous novels, most recently The Violet Hour. He attended Southampton College, and his time in the Hamptons (particularly the parts that don’t make the society pages) was the inspiration for the setting and characters in Voyeur. He now lives in Connecticut.

As with any fiction writer, all the characters have similar thought processes and motivations, Daniel is no different, and I'm fine with that, because I like his character, in all its many guises. Like Elmore Leonard and several others, the common theme of lives forged in the crucible of crime and corruption that rise from the slag more human than before, more compassionate than before, is the stuff that rings true since the old testament

What You See Can Kill You In Daniel Judson's Violent Mystery, "Voyeur"

Manhattan PI Remer was a professional voyeur who was paid to spy on adulterous spouses. One night, while tailing a mark, he was ambushed by four thugs who took him to a warehouse. Bound to a chair, hands tied behind his back with wire, Remer screamed with agony as a soldering iron carved a word into his chest. It was a word intended to be a constant reminder of what he was: a voyeur.

Six years later, the word has been surgically removed from Remer's chest; however, the emotional and physical scars remain. No longer a PI, Remer is now the owner of a lucrative liquor store in Southampton Village. A friend, Detective Kay Barton, begs him to locate a missing heiress, Mia Ferrara. Soon, Remer becomes entangled in a bloody web of deception and betrayal.

Once again, Daniel Judson has supplied his fans with another violent crime noir set in the Hamptons of Long Island. "Voyeur" is populated by beautiful women and large, masculine men. There are the requisite female fatale, the badass hit man, and the attractive girl who is fleeing from her problems. An action-packed crime fantasy (intended chiefly for men), "Voyeur" is a quick read.

Like Judson's previous thriller, "The Violet Hour," the atmospheric setting in "Voyeur" is one of desolation, isolation and coldness. The tourists are gone. Many homes are closed and abandoned because of the winter season and the depressed economy. However, not all is bleak; there is the scattering of Christmas decorations. Most all of the novel's present action occurs during the Christmas season though the main characters aren't strict observers of this sacred holiday.

Remer reminds me of Cal Rakowski, the young mechanic in "The Violet Hour." Both men have soft hearts, which prove to be their downfalls; they also help pregnant women in locating missing girls who are troubled. Along the way, they are terrorized by thugs and a female fatale. However, unlike Rakowski, Remer is older and more experienced at defending himself.

A former marine, Remer is large and handsome. He once worked as a detective for a law firm before becoming a PI. He has all the state-of-the-art spying equipment. He also has a Glock with a silencer and uses it to obtain revenge on the Frenchman who scarred him. I can't judge him; I probably would've craved vengeance myself. The Frenchman deserved it.

Do I admire Remer? Most men would. Like James Bond, he's had sexual relations with every beautiful woman in the plot: Kay Barton, Mia Ferrara, and Angela Syc (pronounced "sigh."). The only other female lead, Casey Collins, is a bartender and a boxer who knocks him unconscious. She leaves him for dead in the cold and snow; however, when Remer knocks out two assailants, he takes measures to ensure they are found. For that, I admire him.

Remer becomes involved with the very strange, very disturbed Ferrara family. One or more of its members suffers from a mental illness termed narcissistic personality disorder (NPD). Victims of child abuse, they have low self-esteem and are jealous of others. Consequently, they often lie and fantasize in order to appear special or important; they also manipulate friends and family in an effort to achieve material goals.

Voyeurism can be deceptive; voyeurism can be dangerous. On several occasions, it almost gets Remer killed. While reading "Voyeur," I kept thinking of the hit 1984 song, "Somebody's Watching Me," sung by R&B artist Rockwell. The novel, like the song, deals with the theme of paranoia and how it can manipulate our perception of reality. Paranoia, in the case of someone with NPD, can be detrimental. However, it can make one be more careful as in the case of Remer when he is investigating.

Daniel Judson's "Voyeur" is highly recommended for fans of crime noir. It is best read around Christmas. Other gritty, violent mysteries involving gangsters, mobsters, hit men and/or thugs are: the novels of Stuart Neville ("The Ghosts of Belfast" and "Collusion"), David J. Schow's "Internecine," Blake Crouch's "Snowbound," Brian M. Wiprud's "Buyback" and Thomas Kaufman's "Drink the Tea."
