JENNIFER STANLEY has a BA in English from Franklin & Marshall College, an MA in English Literature from West Chester University, and an MLIS from North Carolina Central University. She taught sixth grade language arts in Cary, North Carolina for the majority of her eight-year teaching career. A member of two bible study groups, Jennifer's friends from church inspired her to write her Hope Street Church series. An eBay junkie and food-lover, Jennifer lives in Richmond, Virginia with her husband, two young children, and three cats.

It was a good story, well told

When I saw this was about a church, I groaned inwardly, but I didn't need to. No Christian message or twisting facts to fit the message, but the kindly Christian outlook of the participants at the Hope Street Bible study group was enough of a "witness to the faith" if that is what the author wanted. It was a good story, well told. The characters were real - quite a motley collection - and were sympathetically drawn, but there was no sentimentality of any sort. The mystery was good, and no one would have guessed who the perpetrator was, and the romantic interest was carefully done and very real. A thoroughly good read.

This was a fun book to take you away from your worries for a while. I enjoyed the characters. The ending was a twist I didn't expect! I think I will read the next book in this series!!

While the critics found this gritty noir tale compulsively readable, they didn't exactly know what to make of it. O'Shea is a charming narrator despite his split personality and inclination toward evil (his murder weapon: a green rosary), and reviewers found both O'Shea and his NYPD partner psychologically compelling. They also praised the short, choppy prose, which seemed appropriate to the story, and the dark, gruesome twists and turns. But the novel, devoid of pity or emotion and full of violence, may not please all readers. The reviewer from the Washington Post sums it up: "Once Were Cops is designed to appeal to readers with less refined sensibilities."

This is why they call the genre "Noir." It's that dark.

Ken Bruen is never going to get mistaken as the author of 'Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farms.' (Although it's amusing to contemplate how he would handle that particular story.)

He writes really dark novels about really nasty, brutal people. I thought he'd topped himself with 'American Skin', but this book is even darker. It centers around an Irish policeman who comes to the NYPD and is paired up with a really toughie from the local squad. Of course, the Irish policeman has his own dark secrets that make the toughie look like one of Rebecca's friends.

Thrown into the urban playground of the worst parts of NYC, they go wild. Literally.

Bruen matches James Ellroy's ability to get inside the head of psychopaths (see Ellroy's Killer on the Road for the penultimate take) in this book. Needless to say, this book is not going to come out well for any of the main characters. However, even knowing that in advance, Bruen throws in enough unexpected plot twists to really delight.

One of the other reviewers compared Bruen to the very fine James Burke. I like Burke a lot, but I think the comparison to Ellroy is more apt. Ellroy and Bruen are both fans of stripped down prose, whereas Burke is often downright elegiac (think of his descriptions of Montana in the Dave Robicheaux series.) Burke's villains do bear some similar resemblance to Bruen's protagonists, but Burke doesn't do fundamentally bad people as protagonists. Burke's protagonists are often seriously flawed, but Bruen's are often flawed, flogged, and irretrievably screwed before you're out of the second chapter of the book.

If you like dark characters, really stripped down prose, and plots with an amphetamine pulse, you're going to like this book a lot.

"Shake Hands with the Devil"

There is magic in Ken Bruen's unadorned prose that is not easily identified. But once you've read it, you may wonder why it takes other authors paragraphs to conjure an image that Bruen knocks off in a single line, making it look easy. And once you've read him, you'll never mistake for anyone else in his uncluttered style telling of life on those mean streets outside the pages of "People Magazine."

"Once Were Cops" is classic Bruen: spare, lean, and brutal. In this talented writer's world, there is no black and white - but that's not to mean it is ambiguous. There is simply the absence of white. Told in the first person, Michael O'Shea - "Shea" - is a rookie "Guard" - a beat cop on Galway's cold and damp streets. He is also a sociopath subject to Jekyll and Hyde-like mood swings which transform this normally competent, if hard-edged, young policeman into a stalking serial killer who preys on young women. But Galway's streets bore quickly and the Guard's no-gun policy dampens Shea's fun, so when an opportunity for an exchange with the NYPD arises, through some mildly menacing extortion with a local pol, in jig time Shea is wearing the NYPD blue. He is teamed with "Kebar", a menace in his own right with enough attitude and baggage for an entire city precinct, hiding a mentally retarded adult sister in an exclusive nursing home courtesy of the local mafia overlord. But with the twin demons Shea and Kebar turned loose on the streets, New York City's "thugery" find themselves on the wrong end of the terror they're usually disbursing.

Bruen keeps his story lines simple and clean, and this is a fast read - easily polished off in a setting or two. But don't let the surface simplicity fool you, as the cagey Bruen is always holding a few twists up his sleeve as he feints and ducks his way to an ironically satisfying, though hardly redeeming, climax. Along the way, hardcore Bruen fans will catch Jack Taylor's cameo in Galway, and chuckle at the subliminal shout-out to crime writer-buddy Duane Swierczynski.

Look, I'll admit - Ken Bruen's brand of crime and style is not for everyone. Bruen's fatally flawed "heroes" - the deeply troubled Shea we meet here, or the alcoholic and anti-social Jack Taylor of previous Galway novels, or the boorish and brutal miscreant Sergeant Brant from the East London precinct series - will depress those looking for virtue and social redeeming value and neatly wrapped, made-for-TV conclusions. And Bruen's black themes and unvarnished fatalism are probably not the stuff Dr. Phil would prescribe to his troubled flock. But for a slice of the noir and an insightful peak into the psyche of evil, none are better equipped to deliver the goods than the fiendishly brilliant Mr. Bruen. Bravo.

All I can say is "Wow" Ken Bruen is still sitting atop the Noir Throne, that's for sure. This is truely the Darkest piece of literature I've ever read, and I loved every minute of it!

"Let's Go Mexico" has been running with the big dogs (Rough Guide & Lonely Planet) for years and it is the best guide out for those on a "starving student" budget.

There is a great section at the beginning of the book, "Discover Mexico", which has five suggested itineraries - excellent. The "Beyond Tourism" chapter will help those looking for volunteer opportunities, environmental preservation, social action, teaching English and studying everything from language to college level courses. These two sections alone are worth the price of the book.

The authors will find you the best rock bottom, dirt cheap, bargain basement, lowest price possible accommodations and restaurants to match. The accommodations listed in this guide span from under $10 to $25 plus. Where the guide has the "thumbs-up" symbol near the listing it is worth checking it out.

There are restaurants in the guide for $2 (this doesn't include your beer) and these eateries have very good food! The guide was written by six "research-writers" so one geographical area can be better described than another. I found the descriptions of both the accommodations and eateries to be very brief and not as informative as the upscale guide ,"Frommer's" (a very good guide for Mexico - strongly recommended). However, you still get enough information to make a discerning choice.

For those who love "Nightlife" (bars & clubs), the "Let's Go Mexico" guide is the best out today... especially for the young crowd. All of their recommendations, including the bars and clubs, are easy to find on fairly decent maps.

Bottom line: This is guide is especially valuable if you are trying to explore Mexico on your lunch money. Happy Trails. Highly Recommended.

Not Thorough or Up to Date

As a white, early 30's couple who are experienced off-the-beaten-path travelers, we've used Lets Go in the past for travel through Europe and Asia and have been mostly satisfied. However, we were very unsatisfied with the Mexico book.
1) The Mexico book was particularly bad for smaller Mexican cities/towns. The chapter on Oaxaca was lacking in details, specifically regarding transportation options. Even for Mexico City, the number of listings seemed small in comparison to the number of options.
2) We are slightly older travelers (30 years old) and this book is focused on late night parties and bars. While I understand that Lets Go is oriented to younger travelers (post-college), we found the lack of nice bars, authentic cheap food (barely discussed street food), and local activities (not gringo bars or non-tourist circuit things).
3) Hotel descriptions were unfailingly positive. While the hotels we stayed in were sparse, but fine, to say things like 'spotless bathroom' when the bathroom was adequate and not spotless, is far-fetched and misleading.
4) Prices were significantly off - 15-20%. Even if no one from Lets Go travels to Mexico every year, it cannot be difficult to call these places to verify prices, especially when Lets Go lists the telephone number and publishes a new edition every year.
5) we are not fluent, but speak an intermediate level of Spanish. We didn't feel that Lets Go adequately prepared us for the lack of English spoken, especially in non-beach or non-Mexico City areas of the country.

Good for some, perhaps, but not for others

I didn't really gain much insight as to the types of activities I was hoping to explore in Mexico (Chiapas). Granted, there is a good deal of info regarding museums and markets in Let's Go, but not very much regarding ecotour and other outdoor pursuits, which don't get much mention at all in this guide. If you're looking for info regarding hotels and cultural attractions, Let's Go may be a good choice. If you're looking for info regarding ecotourism, outdoor activites, and other such things that may be a little off the beaten path, Rough Guide or Lonely Planet is probably the better buy.

Evanovich has been producing these short and sweet bonbons in the Stephanie Plum Trenton universe around holidays: Christmas (Visions of Sugar Plums, 2002), Valentine’s Day (Plum Lovin’, 2007), this one’s for St. Patrick’s. The theme is green, as in a guy who thinks he is a leprechaun, talks to horses, and steals a bagful of cash that Stephanie’s Grandma Mazur lifts and takes to Atlantic City. Also present in these interludes between Evanovich’s numbered Plum series is the enigmatice Diesel, who has powers beyond those of mortal men (even Stephanie’s two beaux, Morelli and Ranger). The usual cast finds itself in Atlantic City, trying to hold on to the leprechaun, win back the money, and rescue the horse, until a very ugly mobster, whose money was pinched by the leprechaun, kidnaps Grandma Mazur. Diesel may be an angel, but he thinks Stephanie’s hot, and Stephanie may be a skip tracer, but she also worries about her grandma. Oh, and for awhile, the horse really is in her kitchen. It's all about luck

Statisically speaking, luck has a normal distribution, that is, it has a bell shaped curve. Most people are in the middle with an average amount of luck, but some people are at an extreme point on the curve and are unlucky all the time (like that character in Lil Abner who walked around with a black cloud over his head), and some are at the other end and are lucky all the time. So goes life.

It's St. Patrick's Day and there is a rainbow in the air. Grandma Mazur stumbles into a duffle bag full of money - lots of money. She thinks that it is lucky money and hers to keep. Let the good times roll. She is off to Atlantic City. But other people have claims on the money. The story has an interesting cast of characters including an ex-jockey who thinks that he is an invisible leprechaun (he is always lucky, but manages to fumble it away); of course there are Stephi, Lula, and Connie from the bailbonds office; Diesel appears from Stephi's past - another man in her life; a short guy hired by Grandma Mazur; the gangster Delvina; and a horse to add to the adventures and misadventures. Of course there is the money.

You will have to read the novel to see how it all shakes out. The novel is not great literature, but is extremely funny. ROFL. Some scenes towards the end had me laughing so hard I had trouble continuing.

It is a short novel, and a quick read, at 166 pages with 28 lines per page somewhat widely spaced in easy reading type. It contains what a friend would call earthy language. I would personally classify it as PG-13.

Leprechauns, Horses and Foil Hats!

In this latest installment of the Plum series, Stephanie is on another crazy adventure with none other than Diesel.

When Grandma Mazur finds a duffel bag filled with loot she disappears, Stephanie tracks her down at a casino in Atlantic City where the craziness ensues. Grandma has the money; Stephanie, Lulu and Connie are after Grandma. A Leprechaun is after the money and Grandma. A mobster is after the Leprechaun and money. And Diesel is after the Leprechaun. Things get hectic.

At 166 pages and giant print, this hardcover could easily have been read in a couple of hours, had I been drawn in to the story, I would have. The thing is I think the thrill is gone for me on this series and that bums me out tremendously. I have been on board with this series and loving every minute of it up until Lean Mean Thirteen (Stephanie Plum Novels). I feel like with that book, and now this one, I am reading the same story over and over. Nothing really new or exciting is happening. I didn't laugh at all during this book and I think I only giggled once when a joke is made about the size of the Leprechauns anatomy.

This is the first Janet Evanovich book I haven't purchased. Normally I rush to the store on the release date. This time I let my sister go it alone and I waited for her to be done with her copy and that's what I read. I don't want to be done with this series, but if she doesn't shake things up in Fearless Fourteen: A Stephanie Plum Novel (Stephanie Plum Novels), I am done. I will reread the old ones and have to be content with that.

Cute in between book

This is a very cute book - it had some guffaw moments to it, but generally it is a great escape book - where we see some of our favorite characters doing crazy stuff.
The story takes place about a month after the last in between book - this time is St. Patrick's Day - Grandma Mazur has found a large bag of money, and has gone to Atlantic City to gamble it - Stephanie, Connie, Lula, Diesel (who is featured in the in between books) and a wannabe leprechaun (who found the money) go to find her.
Lula is more flamboyant than her normal self - thinking she will become the next plus size supermodel...
Some hilarious moments happen when the crew saves an injured racehorse named Doug and transporting him in an RV, then a stint in Stephanie's apartment -
We get tweaks of our favorite guys - Joe and Ranger, but that's it - their comments add to the madcap atmosphere though...
What we didn't see was Rex - where was Rex - did he go South for the Winter? Do not think the little critter would have enjoyed being alone while Stephanie was in Atlantic City, or having a horse horn into his territory at Stephanie's apartment...
The obligatory destruction of Stephanie's current car occurs -
It's a cute book - is it the best book? No -
But when Grandma Mazur has a bigger role, it always leaves you smiling...

Disappointed!!

I was extremely disappointed in this book, given the possibilities for wildly creative and colorful jewelry I expected from Teresa Searle (and which the cover photo led me to believe were inside) based on her fantastic first book, "Heartfelt: 25 Projects for Stitched and Felted Accessories." The projects in her first book more closely mirrored her original style: fabulously colorful creations from felt layered on felt, and stitched in different ways, all in unusual color combinations.

In this book, she has moved into other materials and gives us jewelry made from buttons, crystals, beads, sequins, rickrack, and yarns combined with fabrics such as cottons, chiffons, and silks. I feel that most of the projects are less than inspired (a fabric-wrapped bangle?) and some are all too reminiscent of projects explained in other books (such as fabric-covered buttons, a necklace of threadlace created with dissolvable interfacing, or a knitted chenille flower corsage). Perhaps Teresa Searle has moved into using fabrics other than her signature felt but I just expected more original work from her--jewelry that blazed forth as creative sophistication, not jewelry that looks like it screams "middle school craft fair."

Are you kidding me?

PLEASE, PLEASE, do not spend your money on this book! You will be sorely disappointed. Luckily, I didn't buy this book; I borrowed it from a co-worker. If I had actually bought it, I would have been even more upset than I am for wasting a few hours reading it.

This book isn't remotely close to a companion guide for the Twilight Saga. (The rest of the review will contain spoilers from the Twilight books, so don't read any farther if you haven't read the books.) Throughout the book, the author gives a rundown on typical vampires and werewolves. The characters in Twilight are not at all typical! This entire companion book is basically this: Even though the Cullen vampires don't sleep (or insert any "typical" vampire quality), if they did, this is what you would have to do if you were in love with a vampire...... The author also goes on and on about werewolves and how they are portrayed in movies and books and doesn't even acknowledge that Breaking Dawn revealed that the pack wasn't composed of werewolves, but that they were shape shifters. The author also tells you that if you want to have a vampire boyfriend, you'll need to put on white makeup everyday, but if you have a werewolf boyfriend, you need to have hair injections to have fur on your face. Also, make sure your vampire boyfriend wears sunscreen so he doesn't get skin cancer. The author also speaks very condescendingly about career driven women, scientists, doctors, nurses, and women and men during the labor process while having a baby.

The book is maybe 25% about Twilight, and the other 75% is about other vampire and werewolf movies and books. The parts that do contain references to Twilight are riddled with errors. I think the error that caught me most off guard was where she said Edward could project his thoughts into Bella's mind. I guess she was referring to New Moon where Bella HALLUCINATED hearing Edward's voice, not Edward actually projecting his thoughts into her head. A few other errors.....Edward injected his venom blood into Bella (it's just venom), there was a vampire/werewolf fight at the wedding (there was an argument, not an actual fight), the only way Edward was going to turn Bella into a vampire was if her life was in danger (he had already agreed to change her after they were married), Bella tinkered with motorcycles (not Bella, Jacob did), Jacob's pack killed people (they protected people, no killing of humans, only vampires), Edward wasn't a virgin when he first made love to Bella (of course he was, did you skip that whole part in Eclipse?!), vampires don't have babies, even though in the very next chapter she mentions they have a child......there are others, but those are the ones that stood out.

If you want a childishly written book on typical vampires and werewolves, then this is definitely the book for you. However, if you want a true companion to the Twilight saga, wait for Stephenie's book to come out.

Not what I thought

I wasn't all that impressed with this one. I wish I hadnt gone out and paid money for it but I did and now I am wishing that I would have waited for the Authorized Guide. This book didn't really have all that much to do with the movie. I couldn't even finish it, it just wasn't something that I wanted to read.

Trust me. If you are an avid movie goer and book reader I would wait and get thee authorized version. The front pic is nice but I was not so keyed up with this author's writing as a whole. It did however gave me the general concept of what all the hub bub is about and a general idea of a werewolf and a vampire. So save your money and wait for the real deal.

Review of "Cocatiels at Seven" by Donna Andrews

This is the ninth book in the Meg Langslow series. It is well written but lacks the rollicking fun of the previous novels. Don't get me wrong there are a few giggles but unlike the previous books in the series I didn't laugh out loud. Meg trying to solve a murder while trying to keep her various family members out of trouble is funny. Meg trying to solve a murder with an abandoned toddler in tow is not.

The charm and humor of this series has always been watching Meg and Michael deal with the over the top personalities around them. This book has very little of that. Although the author hints at other things that Meg would normally be worried about, we don't see it.

I enjoyed this book but was also disappointed in it. Even the title "Cockatiels at Seven" doesn't fit the story as all the previous titles have. If you are already a fan you may also find this book lacking. If you haven't already been hooked on the series this book is good but not typical.

Where are all the crazy characters?

The title/cover art is cute but totally misleading in that it implies a frivolous, lighthearted story containing cocktails and parties, which in fact have nothing whatever to do with the plot.

It isn't too serious, certainly, but this one has more depth of tone than previous books, focusing more on real feelings and even a little character growth. Michael features more than of late which is good (and with hardly any chuckling,thank goodness) and Jack Ransom makes a welcome (although disappointingly mundane) guest appearance but Timmy the toddler is the real star here.

However, there are no crazy relations around this time. Meg's father and long-lost grandfather are there - but they're not really amusing at all, just popping up occasionally in the background to park various reptiles and birds around Meg's vast house as usual - and their 'mystery' sub-plots are simply perfunctory, barely mentioned in passing (and although Rob's highlight scene is a classic, it's just abandoned without any further explanation as soon as it's over).

The actual mystery is quite good, although the villain was obvious as soon as the red herrings swam into view (although not to Meg, to whom it was a complete surprise despite all her sleuthing). Still, overall it's a good read, but I do hanker after a return to the classic madcap style of 'Buzzards' and 'Parrots'.

Maybe next time...?

More serious issues, less humor

This installment of the Meg Lanslow series isn't quite as funny as most of the previous volumes have been. Even when the birds get loose, it isn't the rollicking physical farce that some of the previous ones have been (parrots in the chandeliers, penguins on the croquet field...) Even Meg's relatives have calmed down some; the introduction of Dr. Blake, Meg's father's long-lost father, in the previous volume, has changed the family dynamics considerably.

I'm not saying you won't like the book - if you've been following the series, you'll certainly want to read this installment, and the mysteries involved are good ones, but it won't leave you snorting coffee out your nose suddenly, the way some of the previous books have. Or to put it another way, there were no bits that I absolutely HAD to read out loud to my spouse. One really good line about a baby wombat, but it was just a passing comment.

On the plus side, there is more than one crime committed in this volume, and the various plot threads tangle together in unexpected ways, which I did enjoy. There's the possible embezzlement at the college, the dead body (not found till halfway through the book) and the endangered species flavor of the month. There's also the mystery, though not criminal, of where Rob keeps disappearing to.

And then there's the other big question: are Meg and Michael ready to have kids? Would they be good parents? Is taking care of a friend's two-year-old unexpectedly a fair trial of how they'd cope?

Very little blacksmithing gets done, Michael is in faculty meetings for most of the book, and there are very few cockatiels involved at all. There's an emerald boa in the hot tub, and there are lots of finches. Seth Early's sheep are still around, and a few llamas; for dogs, we have Spike and later the dog of the murder victim. Oh, and there are the tropical fish over at Mutant Wizards.

If the above description leaves you a bit bewildered as to what's going on, that's a fair indication that you probably should go read a few of the previous books in the series. A great deal of the action involves the personal interactions between family members, close or distant, and if you don't have any background on the family, jumping into it in the middle like this might be a bit more puzzling than you'd expect. While you don't have to read every one of them, you'd probably be best off reading at least the first two in the series and then the one immediately previous to this one, before tackling this one.
