Hark! The Herald Angel Screamed: An Augusta Goodnight Mystery (with Heavenly Recipes) (Augusta Goodnight Mysteries), by Mignon F. Ballard

It’s Christmastime in the seemingly tranquil town of Stone’s Throw, South Carolina, but amid all the caroling, cookies, and cheer, a murderer casts a not-so-jolly pall on the holiday season.

Augusta Goodnight, guardian angel, sometime sleuth, and welcome boarder with longtime resident Lucy Nan Pilgrim, comes to the aid of her friends when, as Lucy Nan is searching for the perfect Christmas tree on her grandmother’s abandoned estate, a mysterious stranger plummets to his death from the mansion’s balcony. Lucy Nan can’t shake off childhood stories of the ghost of a girl who fell from the same spot long ago---has the ghost come back to haunt the living, or is there an all-too-human murderer at work?

Mysterious events are soon heating up faster than spiced punch left on the burner, and it will take Augusta’s help, not to mention some celestial Southern cooking, for peace to be restored and Christmas lights to shine once again in the little town of Stone’s Throw.

From Publishers Weekly
At the start of Ballard's sweet seventh mystery to feature Lucy Nan Pilgrim and her guardian angel, Augusta Goodnight (after 2006's The Angel and the Jabberwocky Murders), the folks of Stone's Throw, S.C., are preparing for Christmas when Dexter Clark, a not very nice man with a criminal record, falls to his death from a balcony at Willowbrook, Lucy Nan's grandmother's plantation home. Then someone drugs Idonia Mae Culpepper, who'd begun dating town newcomer Melrose DuBois, and steals a locket DuBois had given her. Later, Opal Henshaw, DuBois's landlady, breaks her neck in a fall from a church balcony. Might Opal have known too much about the locket's provenance? Could Melrose be a thief and a killer? Augusta as always makes a delightful earthbound angel in a Southern cozy fragrant with holiday spices and, yes, a selection of enticing recipes. (Nov.)

Hark! The Snoopy Angel Sings...
By Mimbelina
Glory to the newborn King! Peace on earth and mercy mild...

It's the Christmas season in Stone's Throw, South Carolina, but peace on earth is not on the nativity program this year. Fear and anxiety have taken over the town once again after the death of a stranger out at the long-abandoned ancestral home of Lucy Nan Pilgrim. Lucy, along with her friends, is puzzled by the man's seemingly accidental fall from the empty house's balcony and soon becomes frightened when his death is tied to a mysterious locket, old ghost stories and family secrets that extend far beyond their town's little borders. Will there be broken hearts and broken lives under this year's Christmas tree or can the Thursdays (who really meet on Mondays) solve the mystery before one of their own is hurt? Alone, they may not have a chance, but with the heavenly help of Lucy's guardian angel, Augusta Goodnight, they just might!

Mignon Ballard brings Southern coziness and warmth to the table once again in this installment of her charming Augusta Goodnight series. With its sassy humor and yummy-sounding recipes, this book was a delight! Settling Augusta with Lucy in Stone's Throw has allowed Ballard to develop a cast of characters whose personalities are now well-established, allowing the reader to feel a deeper connection to the series that wasn't present in the earlier books. The ongoing plots threaded throughout the past few books - including Lucy's romance with quirky Ben - are also a nice addition, providing additional depth to the book. Though this means that Augusta takes a secondary role in the book, I've always felt that this was a better place for her than in the forefront. All in all, a nice cozy read.

charming amateur sleuth urban fantasy
By A Customer
Everyone's favorite Guardian Angel Augusta Goodnight is still staying with Lucy Nan Pilgrim in the small town of Stone's Throw, South Carolina. It is the Christmas season; Augusta's favorite time of the year. She, Lucy and their friend Ellis seek the right tree for their church fellowship. They are looking on the grounds of Willowbrook, owned by Lucy's cousin, when they find a dead man on the porch below the mansion's balcony; the guard rail is broken.

While everyone tries to identify the John Doe, they are also happy for their friend Idonia who avoided love for years, but is involved with newcomer Melrose DuBois, who gave her a locket as a sign of his affection. When Lucy Nan and Ellis visit the caretakers of Willowbrook, the Tanseys, they see a picture of the couple's dead daughter wearing the same locket that Melrose gave to Idonia. The dead man is identified as Dexter Clark, the son in law of the Tansy's' dead daughter. Dexter's Aunt Opal Henshawe is also killed; Lucy Nan and Ellis know the events are obviously related even Melrose's disappearance. However, what that connection is remains mysteriously unknown as they seek to identify a killer without becoming the next victims.

Living up to her surname Augusta is the personification of goodness as she is able to make those in her circle feel better about themselves. While she cannot directly help find the culprit, Augusta assists Lucy, Nan, and Ellis on the quest. They each have an inner strength so when they team up, they can move mountains. Mignon F. Ballard is a wonderful storyteller who enchants her audience with this charming amateur sleuth urban fantasy.

Miguel has dreamed of joining his parents in California since the day they left him behind in Mexico six years, eleven months, and twelve days ago. On the morning of his fifteenth birthday, Miguel's wait is over.
Or so he thinks. The trip north to the border―la línea―is fraught with dangers. Thieves. Border guards. And a grueling, two-day trek across the desert. It would be hard enough to survive alone. But it's almost impossible with his tagalong sister in tow.
Their money gone and their hopes nearly dashed, Miguel and his sister have no choice but to hop the infamous mata gente as it races toward the border. As they cling to the roof of the speeding train, they hold onto each other, and to their dreams. But they quickly learn that you can't always count on dreams―even the ones that come true.

From School Library Journal
Grade 5 Up-Six years ago, Miguel and Elena's mother and father left Mexico and crossed la línea into California. On the morning of Miguel's 15th birthday, he receives a note from his father telling him that it is time for him to join them. Miguel is sad to leave his grandmother and sister behind, but is excited about being reunited with his parents. Unbeknownst to Miguel, Elena, 13, disguises herself and joins him on the difficult journey. They are robbed, threatened, and almost perish in a desperate trek across the desert. The pacing of the plot is quick and driven, and the characters are realistically drawn. They interact as true siblings do, sometimes with love and sometimes not. Cultural and geographical background information is expertly woven into the novel. The author creates a mood of desperation and anxiety as the story unfolds and Miguel and Elena discover that crossing la línea will forever change the way they look at themselves and the world. Although the epilogue illuminates their lives as adults, the novel ends abruptly, leaving readers without the anticipated emotional release of their reunion with their parents.-Melissa Christy Buron, Epps Island Elementary, Houston, TX

From Booklist
*Starred Review* Gr. 5-8. When Miguel, 15, leaves San Jacinto, Mexico, to join his parents in California, his sister, Elena, 13, secretly follows him. Together with their guides they barely survive a harrowing journey through the desert and across la linea, the border. A gripping contemporary survival adventure, this spare first novel is also a heart-wrenching family story of courage, betrayal, and love. The harsh facts of the border crossing are immediate--the horrors of dehydration, the soldiers' violence, corruption, and the migrants' terrifying, often disastrous attempts to hop the trains. Miguel's first-person narrative tells it without romanticism. The young people are brave, but they are angry at each other and at their parents, who left them seven years before. They do make it, but always there is the reality of those who do not. Jaramillo teaches migrant kids in California, and in her final notes, she says her story is fiction, but it is based on real events. Spanish is a natural part of the text; there is no glossary, and no need for one. Add this to the list of books in the Core Collection: "The New Immigration Story" in the August 2005 issue of Booklist. Hazel Rochman

Alec Krieder knew his best friend's family never locked their doors―making Kevin Haines and his family the perfect targets for a crime. One night, he waited until they were asleep…then entered the house with a knife. Alec burst into the master bedroom and stabbed Tom and Lisa Haines first. Then he attacked Kevin, who fought for his life. Meanwhile, at the end of the hall, Kevin's sister Maggie awoke to the sound of violence―and was the only one who made it out alive.

“Vivid. Gripping. Undeniably potent. Almost Midnight barrels along like a hot rod on a twisty Ozarks road...a fast, furious read that leaves one plagued by disturbing toughts every time one manages to pause before turning another page.” ―The Kansas City Star on ALMOST MIDNIGHT

“Engrossing…disturbing noirish undertones and undeniable spiritual flair.” ―Kirkus Reviews on ALMOST MIDNIGHT

“Cuneo handles these saints and sinners with equal aplomb.” ―Playboy on ALMOST MIDNIGHT

“A richly detailed exploration…Cuneo's writing does not flinch.” ―St. Louis Post-Dispatch on ALMOST MIDNIGHT

“Cuneo's detailed descriptions of the virtues (loyalty, self-reliance, faith, family) and negatives (violence, chemical dependency, lawlessness) of the Ozarks' culture not only fleshes out Mease's personality but also vividly portrays this overlooked area of Americana. Cuneo's skillful writing allows him to convey the romantic notions of Mease's outlaw ways and travels on America's back roads, while never romanticizing the violence or the hand-to-mouth living…One cannot help but appreciate Cuneo's in-depth, interwoven stories of Mease and the Ozarks.” ―Publishers Weekly on ALMOST MIDNIGHT

The best true crime I've read in a long, long time
By Philip Cavanaugh
This is a frightening book. Even by true crime standards, it's a frightening book. It's also a great book, even a brilliant book, which makes it all the more frightening.

After a harrowing account of the lone survivor's experience of the crime-in-progress, seperated as she was by only dry-wall and door-panel from the savage butchering of her mother, father, and brother, and of her subsequent flight from their family home, the book settles into swift pace. The first half centers on the investigation, the baffling search on the part of the Manheim Township Police Department -- and, principally, on the part of the affable Allen Leed -- for the perpetrator of the slaughter that's sent the entire community into panic. Might there be a murderer at loose amongst the normally friendly people of Lancaster, PA? And might that murderer strike again? Perhaps. But the investigation, a month into its tireless churning, yields nothing. Why? Because there's no apparent motive. Try as they might, the cops can't find a motive. And this -- this is where the book turns terrifying.

The killer is a kid, an intellectually precocious sixteen-year-old boy, and is first glimpsed by the reader in the predictable milieus of ordinary American adolescence -- at high school and a shopping mall, in the first crimson blush of puppy love. Gradually, however, it comes to light that these typical teenage scenes are taking place in the immediate aftermath of his having killed not only his best friend but both of his best friend's parents, and that he seems remarkably untroubled by any of it.

The rest of the book is a portrait of evil, a rare look at a human being who killed for sport and for no other reason, and who was anxious to do it again. Supplemented by the murderer's personal diaries, Michael W. Cuneo masterfully tells a story terrifying for its callousness and haunting for its inexplicability. The writing is powerful, the drama is taut, and the final chapters are breathtaking. I highly recommend it.

Thin Story, Redundant Writing
By K. Curtis
This is a rather thin story with the author padding a lot of information and background about the different police agencies involved. There was more information about the detectives than there was about the actual murder. Halfway through the book, they still had not found the murderer who was right under their noses the entire time. The author writes EXHAUSTIVELY about the investigation which never really went anywhere. They were at their wit's end until the kid confesses. Wonder if they would have figured it out if the kid hadn't confessed?? Very disappointing book.

Tragedy strikes in Pennsylvania amish country
By Joe Schmo
I picked this book up a few days ago because the story intrigued me; I didn't know it would be this riveting. Cuneo crafts this book expertly, detailing the crime, the investigation, and the surrounding setting so that you find yourself enthralled by the book until you turn the last page. Each chapter added color and flavor to the book, and I didn't find myself flipping through to the end of a chapter to see how many more pages it was, as I do with other books. I'm not sure what that Dr.Heartfelt guy read, but it couldn't have been this book. I found the information Cuneo revealed to be of great interest, certainly not "redundant" as he says. The book is a quick, dynamic read and if you like true crime at all, definitely pick it up. Just don't get started on it before bed like I did because you're going to get much sleep.lol.

Good read...

Author Randy Sutton has done a great job of pulling several individual stories together to produce a book that (IMHO) may give the reader a look at some of the highs and lows of police work. Highly recommend it.

The Often Sensitive Side of Police Officers
By Michael L. Slavin
The author has put together an excellent collection of true police short stories from around the country. By my count there are 55 different contributors included. Most of the stories are just several pages in length so that makes for quick reading. As might be expected the quality of the writers is somewhat uneven. Frequently there are quite dramatic events being recounted that certainly maintain the readers attention. All in all--quite an interesting read.

OUTSTANDING COLLECTION OF REAL-LIFE POLICE STORIES
By Janice Harrison
I was really impressed when reading Sgt. Randy Sutton's book, TRUE BLUE: POLICE STORIES BY THOSE WHO HAVE LIVED THEM. Sutton himself is clearly very compassionate, kind and understanding and is able to portray his, and other law enforcement officers' experiences and feelings in vivid detail. He had a clear vision of what he wanted his book to be and he did an outstanding job at collecting stories from law enforcement officers which all revolve around similar themes, including human behavior, psychology, sociology, and the post-9/11 trauma. When reading these stories, I marvel at what these law enforcement officers experience on a daily basis and wonder how they cope as well as they do. What they see on a regular basis would turn the stomachs of the rest of us and we would run out of there screaming! It is high time that a book like this was written, because it allows you to see inside the minds of law enforcement officials and experience in vivid detail what they go through each day they are on the job.

From the Inside Flap

Life sucks when your friends are pissed at you.

Just ask Zoey Redbird – she's become an undisputed expert on suckiness. In one week she has gone from having three boyfriends to having none, and from having a tight-knit group of friends who trusted and supported her, to being an outcast. And the worst part is, she knows it's her own fault. Speaking of friends, the only two Zoey has left are undead, unMarked, and unable to stop bickering with each other. So who can blame her for befriending the House of Night's newest transfer student, the majorly hot Olympic archer, James Stark?

Meanwhile, Neferet has declared a war on humans after it appears that the People of the Faith have murdered two vampyres. But Aphrodite's latest visions show a world completely different from the High Priestess's promises, a world full of violence, hatred, and darkness, all because of Zoey's death―and the only way it seems she can prevent it from happening is to make things right with her friends. Zoey knows in her heart that fighting with humans is wrong. But will anyone listen to her? Zoey's adventures at vampyre finishing school take a wild and dangerous turn as loyalties are tested, shocking true intentions come to light, and an ancient evil is awakened in PC and Kristin Cast's spellbinding fourth House of Night novel.

Amazing book
By Amanda Topel
I love the character Zoey because not only do you read how she's progressing through her drama but she also learns life lessons. Of course it annoyed the heck out of me when she deemed herself herself weak but only because she didn't believe in herself enough. I felt a wash of relief when she took charge and told her friends the truth about everything. That was one of my favorite parts.

so many good reviews for this one...i dont get it
By Amazon Customer
I recently became interested in the vampire novel genre after reading Twilight. Since reading it i have read several other vampire series, including this one. Sadly this one is at the bottom of my recommendation list for other to read. The first few books from this series were very promising, which made me read all of them that are released but i was very disappointed afterward. I did not feel as close to the characters as i wanted to, or become attached, at all. They definitely lacked personality, the authors were annoyingly repetitive and i felt as though there were many loose ends in the novels. I found myself asking questions about the story and characters that were given no answers. If you want to read a great story based on vampires, i would look elsewhere before reading House of Night. Just writing this review and thinking of the plot is givng me a little bit of a headache. i felt as though lots of the page were mindlessly written just trying to fill space and at the end of each novel i felt like i was given a book ripped in half because of how little is accomplished in the plot. this entire series could have been written into one book if the authors didnt have so much fluff.

Some might consider these good because their frame of reference is limited in this genre, i cant imagine any other reason someone may like these. My local used bookstore had several of these in stock. i suggest going to yours or to a library for these before you invest in the whole series if you are deciding whether to read these.

Don't waste the time or money
By Genevieve C. Thomas
I agree with the other 2 star reviewers, this book is the worst in this OK series; I would have liked to give this last book 1 star but it seemed petty. I like to give a story a fair chance before I talk badly about it; so I persevered, even though I was ready to throw this book away half way through. By the time I had finished this book I felt robbed, Books one through four occured over the course of less than three months!!! Can you say rip off!! This entire series could have been one or two really good books and would have saved needless and copious amounts of repitition on the authors' part and money on our parts (which is of course not the authors'focus or goal. Instead House of Night is made up of five OK books, that had the promise of being a great series. Vampire Academy is a much more engaging and entertaining series that won't leave the reader with the sense of being scammed.

Altman is the Code for suspense!
By J. J Kamlani
Outlined by Robert Ludlum, and written by Gayle Lynds, the Altman Code sizzles with action, a good plotline, good characterization, and crisp, realistic dialogue.
The latest installment in the Covert-One series with spy/physician hero Jon Smith, the story starts with a photographer who is murdered for pictures he has taken of a Chinese cargo ship transporting enough Iraqi chemical and biological weapons to make any city in the world a grave wasteland, uninhabitable for years to come. The ship's destination? The U.S., where else.
During a mission to obtain the ship's true manafest, Jon Smith and his contact are ambushed, and with his contact killed, and the manafest stolen, Smith is forced to find another way to abtain another copy of the manafest, or die trying.
Lynds leads Smith, and us on an action filled quest for the manafest, so that the ship can be boarded, and destroyed before it's deadly cargo reaches American shores.
Lynds further complicates the plot by throwing in the U.S. President's father being kept captive by the Chinese government, being used as a pawn in this dramatic affair, to "Look the other way, or else", the result is a great read from first page to last.
Hold on, and enjoy the ride! I did.

For some mind-candy entertainment, this works...
By Thomas Duff
The other paperback I was using to kill time on the plane during my recent trip was Robert Ludlum's The Altman Code by Gayle Lynds. This is my first exposure to the Covert-One series, so I can't compare it to others for quality. But so far as political espionage yarns go, this wasn't bad...

The American government gets wind of a chemical shipment from China to Iran, and the material has only one use... as weapons. The official cargo manifest doesn't reflect that reality, and therein lies the problem. If the military stops the boat, they risk international condemnation for aggression (especially if they are wrong about the contents). But if they don't stop the boat, then the Iranian government has weapons of mass destruction. To complicate issues (because there *always* has to be complications), all the official channels that could be used to resolve this matter are taking stances that will move each country to the brink of a massive war. Not only does the boat need to be stopped before it enters the Gulf, but the government also needs to figure out who is pushing for war over peace...

In many ways, this is the typical "covert action, disavow all knowledge if anything happens" type story. There's a subplot involving the President and an old prisoner held in China who claims to be the President's biological father. It's a little "out there", but not so much that it distracts from the main story. Based on what I saw in this novel, I'd be inclined to look for a few more in the series if I was looking for some mind-candy...
