If Poppy Smith-Barnes knew that the Duke of Drummond really existed—and wasn’t just a sherry-induced figment of her cook’s imagination—Poppy never would have told everyone he is her fiancé. So, of course, when Nicholas Staunton, the newly titled Duke of Drummond, turns up at a society ball with a ring and an offer of marriage, it would seem that Poppy has no choice but to accept. As it turns out, Nicholas really has no choice but to propose to Poppy. If Nicholas wishes to continue his supersecret work for the British government, he needs a suitable wife—one who would deflect all the attention, and matchmaking mammas, his new title is brings. Of course, the logical solution is a faux engagement, but once love enters the equation, logic has nothing to do with anything. The second installment of Kramer’s deliciously clever “Impossible Bachelors” series rewards readers with a simply irresistible combination of scintillating wit and sizzling sensual romance. --John Charles

clever storyline, but. .
By Duchess of Mabank
Ok, I really have a love-hate relationship with this book. The author shows massive potential, and I gobbled up the first book, When Harry Met Molly. However, this book left me wanting. . . what? Im not sure. It starts out great, then proceeds way to quick.
Our heroine comes face to face with The Duke of Drummond a person who's name she has been using to throw unwanted suitors away thinking it was made up from her wildly imaginative cook and is forced to accept a marriage proposal from him immediately. Unfortunately she believes she is in love with a Russian Prince whom she met at fifteen spent a puppy love week with and who just so happens to have arrived in London as well. Problem? Ten min later her and her "fiance" are making out in a carriage. Wait. What? She's still in love with the Prince right? Didn't she just meet this guy and forced to accept his proposal? While traditionally I hate how romance novelists drag out a story I do still like a basis for the relationship. I also find that when they are starting to warm up to each other the scenes get a little steamy. Im fine with that but what happened to the romance in the end? Storyline, great. Spy aspect very good. Romance? Well. . while you had me intrigued for awhile the ending was a huge upset. You have built these characters up so much that I was sadly disappointed to read you sum up their passion in a few sentences at the end as if the deadline for the editor was approaching or that you were burnt out on the book yourself. I will continue reading your books. I like your plots. I find myself loving your characters I just want my "romance" somewhere in there too.

silly and boring
By Ludmila Melchior-Yahil
The characters behave like immature adolescents, the plot (both supposed mystery and silly romance) is boring, and the writing at the J.H. level (no offense to all gifted teenage writers.) The first book by Ms.Kramer was at least mildly entertaining, this one is formulaic and annoying. We meet the oh so sexy hero in bed with a hot mistress, who will blackmail him with fake pregnancy, which is terribly inconvenient, because by then he's in lust, love and certainly in bed with our heroine whom he met 5 minutes earlier, but hey, he's so sexy, skilled and seductive that how could she resist, right? Oh, and the mistress is a Russian princess, so I guess this explains why she's stupid, spoiled and scheming... Maybe instead of trying to fake historical romance, the author should switch to cartoonish modern chick lit.

I'd Prefer to Give this No Stars, but that isn't an option.
By The Fiction Vixen
Reviewed for: TheRomanceReader.Wordpress.com.

This is what I get for choosing a book based on its title; I guess I mistakenly assumed that the ability to craft an amusing title meant that the author also had to ability to write a good book. Boy was I wrong. I got about 60 pages into this before I finally decided that I couldn't get any further, which sucks because this book had a pretty good premise:

I really like spy novels, so when I saw this at the library I thought I had hit the jackpot: a cute title AND Regency spies! What could go wrong? Apparently, a lot.

First, there is the idea that Poppy likes being a spinster. She and two of her friends have decided that unless they can marry for love they are not going to marry. Okay, that's a nice thought, but in Regency England? I don't buy it. What woman in her right mind would have chosen to stay unmarried in a time when being a wife and mother was the only thing most women could aspire to? Second, which is really a corollary to the first, is that when Poppy is presented with an engagement and her father threatens to cut her off if she doesn't marry Nicholas, she claims to be alright with it. What? In what universe would a well-bred young lady be fine with being left penniless and alone? Hell, that was the main reason for Miss Gwen's decision to become Jane's chaperone in the Pink Carnation series.

Then, there's Nick. We first encounter him being awoken by a Russian princess named Natasha, who has a corgi named Boris (I guess Ms. Kramer is a Rocky and Bulwinkle fan). It seems that Nick has spent the night with Natasha and needs to leave immediately because if he is found there he would be forced to marry her, and marriage is not something he wants. As a matter of fact, it is so not what he wants that he begins to question why he ever stayed with Natasha since he doesn't usually go in for that type of thing. That's when he notices the glass of Brandy and begins to wonder if he's been drugged, which upon asking Natasha, he finds out is her thing. (A Russian princess that likes to date rape guys? Lovely.)

Anyway, Nick doesn't have a very high opinion of women. When he finally meets Poppy, he thinks:

"He'd marry her, ship her off to Seaward Hall, and give her what every woman wanted--babies and the occasional bauble to keep her happy. He'd even bring her to town once a year to satisfy that yearning that every woman seemed to have for socializing" (37).

Right, so all woman must want babies, baubles, and balls. Tell me again why you're good enough for Poppy (who alright isn't the sharpest tool in the shed, turning down 12 proposals in the hopes of marrying a Russian prince (Natasha's brother Sergei), but she still deserves better)?

A few pages later, after proposing to Poppy in front of her friend the Russian prince as well as everyone else at the ball, Nick doesn't hesitate in telling Poppy that she must marry him and that she has no choice in the matter. What?! Is this supposed to be romantic? He even tells her that the only reason he plans to marry her is so that he can get on with his life and collect some monetary award--not that Poppy understands a word he is saying as he's speaking in spy jargon. This is all very ironic as Nick fears becoming involved with the wrong woman, one who would drain his savings (of which he has none). I find it extremely interesting that he is a gold digger that fears gold diggers. Whatever.

Last, there is the fact that everyone but Poppy knows what is going on--Nick's boss maneuvers to get them engaged, going so far as to talk to her father, explaining to him about Nick being a spy. Let me get this straight, Poppy's father is allowed to know that Nick is a spy, but Poppy isn't? In what universe does this make sense? Shouldn't the woman being shanghaied into marriage at least know why she is being shanghaied? I guess not.

It was at the point where Nick manhandles Poppy after telling her that she will marry him no matter what she wants that I stopped reading. There are much better books out there for me to waste my time reading something this offensive.

No Stars.

This is an excellent book for an intermediate level sudoku solver. It doesn't get into more advanced techniques like x wing, y wing and swordfish. For those of you looking for a more challenging sudoku book try Absolutely Nasty Sudoku Level 2 (Mensa), Absolutely Nasty Sudoku Level 3 (Mensa), Absolutely Nasty Sudoku Level 4 (Mensa).

In the present day his descendant, Leonora Manin, leaves an unhappy life in London to begin a new one as a glassblower in Venice. From Publishers Weekly
After the dissolution of her marriage, beautiful English artist Leonora Manin is hired as an apprentice glassblower in the Venetian suburb of Murano, in Fiorato's strong U.S. debut. Leonora's ancestor was master glassmaker Corradino Manin, and her new boss plans to exploit that connection. But centuries-old jealousies and treachery surface and the public relations campaign is suddenly canceled. A modern-day relative of Corradino's mentor resents Leonora, while a journalist who was once involved with Alessandro Bardolino, Leonora's new love, decides she wants him back. Complex connections, but nothing compared to those in Corradino's time, when draconian Venetian laws enslaved glassmakers on Murano to insure techniques would remain exclusive to Venice. The author's descriptive prose brings the beauty and danger of 17th-century Venice vividly to life, when Corradino became a traitor seeking freedom for himself and his secret daughter. Leonora's determined to investigate Corradino, but throughout, Alessandro's allegiance is suspect. Those who enjoy intrigue and European history will be easily drawn into this romantic story. (June)

From Booklist
Switching between modern-day and seventeenth-century Venice, Fiorato’s novel is an intriguing mix of history, mystery, art, music, poetry, romance, and politics. Corradino Manin’s family was brutally murdered by Venice’s Council of Ten; Corradino was only saved because his patron saw in the young boy a prodigious gift for glassblowing. Corradino quickly learned to make exquisite glass mirrors and chandeliers for which the Venetian island of Murano soon became renowned. The process of making Murano glass quickly became a secret jealously guarded by the government, but when Corradino is invited to use his talents in the court of King Louis XIV, he is sorely tempted, even though it means leaving his beloved little daughter, Leonora, and endangering his life. This gripping plot is interwoven with a second, similarly intriguing story revolving around another Leonora, this one a modern-day descendent of Corradino. Leonora has come to Venice to escape an unhappy marriage, enhance her skill as a glassblower, and learn more about her mysterious ancestor. Writing with charm and authenticity, Fiorato produces a blend of historical mystery and modern romance that is thoroughly entertaining. --Emily Melton

“The Glassblower of Murano is a compelling story, richly detailed, with wonderful, memorably drawn characters.” ―Diane Haeger, author of The Secret Bride and The Ruby Ring

If you're looking for a light relaxing read, give this one a try...
By Lazy Day Gardener
Marina Fiorato's 'The Glassblower of Murano' is a story told on two interwoven levels - it the story of late seventeenth century Venetian master glassblower Corradino Manin and the story of his modern day descendant Leonora Manin who flees a broken marriage in London and tries to establish a glassblowing career in Venice.

The story is at once a romance, a history, and a mystery. Leonora's story becomes the romance when she meets a handsome Venetian, who like most Venetians, we're told, looks as though he stepped down from a Renaissance portrait. (Nora herself resembles Botticelli's 'Primavera,' while not a bad choice not an especially original one.) Nora's British husband was unfaithful, her new lover is very busy and does have that old girl friend hanging about.... The history is the history of Venice and glassblowing, which Fiorato handles well. Her understanding of both is extensive but not invasive. And the mystery primarily revolves around Corradino - was he a traitor who sold Venice's glass-making secrets to the French?

I enjoyed reading 'The Glassblower of Murano.' The novel's strengths lie in the well-drawn historical background, the interesting descriptions of glassblowing techniques, the loving re-creation of Venice; the characters were well-developed and whole, their actions consistent with their characters. The mystery element worked; I wanted to know what Corradino had done and why he'd done it; the answers were unexpected. The weakest element is the romance, probably because it doesn't get as much time and lacks the originality of the other two skeins.

All in all a pleasant book that I will read again. It's a light pleasant novel set in Venice utilizing the city's history of glassblowing and a little mystery and romance - for me it's four and a half stars.

Diverting, but slightly off key
By Andrew W. Johns
Set against the glorious backdrop of Venice, this novel tells the stories of two artists, separated by four centuries. Corradino Manin is a master glass maker on Murano, at the height of Venice's dominance of the glass making craft. The rulers of Venice ruthlessly protect their monopoly on these glass making techniques, so when he is approached by a representative of Louis XIV of France, he knows he is risking his very life.

In the present, Corradino's descendant, Leonora Manin, recently divorced and adrift, moves to Venice to pursue a career as a glassblower, and to explore her roots in this ancient city. She finds herself at the center of a storm of controversy over the legacy of her famous ancestor. Leonora's story and Corradino's are intertwined through the book.

As an exploration of Venice and its history, this novel works wonderfully. It is especially effective in showing the ruthlessness with which the Republic of Venice maintained its trade advantages. However, the modern portions of this story fell a bit flat. The romance is a bit predictable, and Leonora comes off feeling far too young and immature for the role she's cast in. The story is diverting, but it just doesn't quite ring true on some level, it detracts from the overall impact of the book. Also, the inclusion of the first chapter, verbatim, later in the book is also a distraction. Having already read it, it was hard to understand how repeating it wholesale, without any new details, serves the story.

Not a bad first novel, and a pleasant way to revisit a glorious setting, but certainly showing room for improvement.

If you are looking for a great book to read, look no further....
By Nice Lady
Hard to believe this is the author's first book. This is an excellent and spell-binding story. The characterizations are terrific and highly believable.

The author is adept at weaving a saga across the centuries about a woman glassblower in the famed Venetian city of Murano and her ancestor who lived and died there a long, long time ago.

The prose is rich, both from a historic viewpoint as well as a great tale.

How exactly did Louis XIV's famous Hall of Mirrors at the Palace of Versailles come to be? Did the greatest glassmakers and mirror artisans of Venice have a hand in this famed Gallerie des Glaces?

This is a wonderfully written tale. The pages turn themselves as the reader is transported into a world of long ago.

Do not miss this book! Truly wonderful!

Dodger for Sale (Dodger and Me), by Jordan Sonnenblick

What would you do if your best friend was:

1. Still imaginary (and getting into trouble with other "imaginary" creatures, such as leprechauns. That's right, leprechauns!!)?

2. In danger of losing his home, and the only forest in your town, the magical Field of Dreams?

3. Driving you crazy?!?! (But in a best-friend type of way . . . )

Now you have an idea of what Willie Ryan's life is like in the third and final installment of the hilarious Dodger and Me series. Only this time, Dodger's gone and peeved a band of leprechauns; Willie's sister, Amy, is missing; and class bully James Beeks's dad wants to build a housing development in the Field of Dreams. It just might take an oversize blue chimp―who may or may not be imaginary―and his two fifth-grade friends, Willie and Lizzie, to step up as environmental activists and save the woods (and still get their homework done).

From School Library Journal
Grade 4–6—This is Sonnenblick's third and final book about fifth-grader Willie and his imaginary friend, Dodger, a blue chimpanzee. In this installment, Willie's dad, a self-help writer, has come up with a brilliant idea for his new book: he'll have each family member follow the advice from one of his previous books and document the results. Willie's assignment is Kid on a Quest: Be Your Own Hero. His opportunity comes when he, his friend Lizzie, and the student council join forces to prevent the woods next door to their school from being destroyed by developers. Of course, the problem is less straightforward than it seems; these are magical woods, containing Dodger's Field of Dreams, and before the quest is over, Willie's sister is kidnapped by leprechauns. But with a little magic and the help of his friends, Willie becomes a hero in his own right. In addition to plenty of humor, this fantasy offers realistic relationships and an environmental message. Give it to old fans and be prepared to help newcomers locate the first two books in the series.—Laurie Slagenwhite Walters, Baldwin Public Library, Birmingham, MI

From Booklist
When Willie, his best friend, Lizzie, and his pal Dodger (a hyperactive blue chimpanzee with strange powers) learn that the nearby woods is about to be sold for development, they marshal their resources to save this literally magical place and its inhabitants. Meanwhile, Willie’s sister, Amy, is captured by leprechauns. The book is strongest when rooted most firmly in reality and weakest soaring into fantastic realms. Still, fans of the earlier two Dodger and Me books have never lacked the ability to suspend disbelief. They will find this volume, evidently the last in the series, amusing and satisfying. Grades 4-6. --Carolyn Phelan

Review

“The outlandish tone should please Dodger's fans.” ―Booklist on Dodger for President

“Dodger's silly sense of humor is entertaining, and the situations in which Willie finds himself will have any reader laughing out loud. Willie's awkward affection for his friend Lizzie is a sweet aside to the story. Reluctant readers will find themselves cheering on Willie and wanting to read more in the series.” ―VOYA on Dodger for President

“A magical tale of affection, family, and a boy's imaginative ('imaginary' doesn't do it justice) friendship with an inspired, demented blue chimpanzee...” ―Kirkus Reviews on Dodger and Me

“The humor will draw kids, including Dodger's off-the-wall dialogue and the outlandish predicaments that result when he decides to 'help.'” ―Booklist on Dodger and Me

field of dreams!
By Melissa Sack
This is the third book in the Dodger and Me Series. In this book Willie and Dodger have a big problem. Willie's dad wants to build a neighborhood in the empty lot that all the kids use to play in. Kids that have enjoyed other books in the series will enjoy this one as well. The story could also stand alone. Perfect for kids that are interesting in protecting the environment.

Rutgers University Project on Economics and Children
By Yana V. Rodgers
Fifth grader Willie Ryan faced a new dilemma. His father, a self-help book guru, asked everyone in the family to follow the advice of one of his books as a kind of living experiment, and he would write a new book documenting the results. Willie had to undertake some sort of quest and be a hero. Little did Willie realize that the opportunity to take on a new cause would present itself right around the corner. Someone had placed the empty lot by the school -- the only forest in town and home of the magical Field of Dreams -- on the market.

That "For Sale" sign could only mean one thing: some developer would bulldoze all the trees for an unnecessary housing project, and all who loved the woods, including the leprechauns and Willie's friend Dodger the imaginary chimpanzee, would lose a peaceful sanctuary. Willie and his allies had their work cut out for them, which included discovering the identities of the buyer and seller, as well as lobbying a mayor who turned out to prefer greasing the wheels over saving the environment.

This entertaining novel for young readers, the third in a series about Willie and Dodger, provides an interesting blend of fantasy, adventure, and humor. Driving the plot are some important themes in economics, including the role of buyers and sellers in the real estate market as well as the importance of environmental conservation. Heavy topics perhaps, but easy to digest with the assistance of an oversized blue chimpanzee gliding on a snowboard to that magical pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.

Not a bad read for a textbook
By Amazon Customer
I'm not sure I am qualified to review a History Textbook, it's not like I am just buying up and reading volumes of history for my own critiquing or pleasure.

In all seriousness, I purchased this book because I had to have it for my History 202 class. The teacher used this book exclusively as the resource material for the course. I found at times the viewpoints on events to be fairly subjective, connecting together a cause and effect, or an action and subsequent reaction in a very black and white fashion. I realize that the burden of covering a significant event or happening within a short page or two can lead to some generalizations or loss of nuance, so it can be excused. Maybe that tendency is my beef with History books in general after all, and not a shortcoming of this book.

With that being said, I enjoyed some portions of this text for the straightforward way in which it presents history.

The Saturdays (Melendy Quartet), by Elizabeth Enright

Meet the Melendys! The four Melendy children live with their father and Cuffy, their beloved housekeeper, in a worn but comfortable brownstone in New York City. There's thirteen-year-old Mona, who has decided to become an actress; twelve-year-old mischievous Rush; ten-and-a-half-year-old Randy, who loves to dance and paint; and thoughtful Oliver, who is just six.

Tired of wasting Saturdays doing nothing but wishing for larger allowances, the four Melendys jump at Randy's idea to start the Independent Saturday Afternoon Adventure Club (I.S.A.A.C.). If they pool their resources and take turns spending the whole amount, they can each have at least one memorable Saturday afternoon of their own. Before long, I.S.A.A.C. is in operation and every Saturday is definitely one to remember.

Written more than half a century ago, The Saturdays unfolds with all the ripe details of a specific place and period but remains, just the same, a winning, timeless tale. The Saturdays is the first installment of Enright's Melendy Quartet, an engaging and warm series about the close-knit Melendy family and their surprising adventures.

From Publishers Weekly
Welcome Back! Old favorites are being reissued in force this fall. Elizabeth Enright's Melendy Quartet follows siblings Mona, Rush, Miranda (Randy, for short) and Oliver. First published in 1941, The Saturdays kicks off the series and centers on the foursome's Independent Saturday Afternoon Adventure Club (I.S.A.A.C.), an allowance-endowed venture formed so one lucky Melendy can enjoy a solo sojourn each week. In The Four-Story Mistake (1942) the family moves from their city brownstone to the country; Then There Were Five (1944) describes what happens when the siblings befriend an orphan; and in Spiderweb forTwo: A Melendy Maze (1951), when everyone else leaves for school, Randy and Oliver are left to solve a mystery. The author's charming pen-and-inks punctuate all four volumes. (Sept.)

Elizabeth Enright (1909-1968) was born in Oak Park, Illinois, but spent most of her life in or near New York City. Her mother was a magazine illustrator, while her father was a political cartoonist. Illustration was Enright's original career choice and she studied art in Greenwich, Connecticut; Paris, France; and the Parson's School of Design in New York City. After creating her first book in 1937, she developed a taste, and quickly demonstrated a talent, for writing.

Throughout her life, she won many awards, including the 1939 John Newbery Medal for Thimble Summer and a 1958 Newbery Honor for Gone-Away Lake. Among her other beloved titles are her books about the Melendy family, starting with The Saturdays, published in 1941. Enright also wrote short stories for adults, and her work was published in The New Yorker, The Ladies Home Journal, Cosmopolitan, The Yale Review, Harper's, and The Saturday Evening Post. She taught creative writing at Barnard College. Translated into many languages throughout the world, Elizabeth Enright's stories are for both the young and the young at heart.

Thoroughly enjoyable family fun
By A Customer
My daughter, age 9 and I both read The Saturdays over the past few months along with Four-Story Mistake. We loved this family and found each character fun. I loved their adventures and wish I had read these books as a child. I recommend this book to anyone who values their child's mind and wants to protect them from the abundance of nonsense in some children's literature.

From School Library Journal
Grade 4-6-This book has just one thing going for it. It's the first biography for youngsters about the popular author. The only other sources of information are articles in newspapers, magazines, and on the Internet. Unfortunately, the text reads like a rough draft of a junior-high research paper. Incomplete and fragmented sentences abound as Shapiro rambles on in a confusing manner. Quotations are loosely traced to articles and interviews in their sentences, but are not properly documented ("'It was a little like having the Beatles here,' said an excited, out-of-breath bookstore representative to Entertainment Weekly after the event"). The author writes in absolutes without noting sources, e.g., "Her eyes were always wide in amazement at the world around her-." Events appear out of nowhere as if they'd been previously mentioned. It's a shame that the book is too inaccurate, unsubstantiated, and poorly written to be suitable for research purposes. Do your kids a favor and direct them to Scholastic's Web site (scholastic.com) for information on Rowling.

Gr. 5-8. This is a cut-and-paste job with a couple of glaring errors. But at the moment, there are only one or two books available on Rowling, and older kids won't be ashamed to carry around this book (actually published by an adult imprint) because of its paperback format. The fact of the matter is that Rowling's life was not all that interesting until she started writing about Harry: normal upbringing, a graduate of Exeter University, a year in Paris, a string of undistinguished jobs, and a brief marriage, which left her with a daughter. The book must have been in production before the name of the most recent Harry Potter was changed from the Doomspell Tour nament to Goblet of Fire , but the mistake will jump out at readers. There also seem to be missteps in the chronology. Keep this for report writers and Harry lovers until something better comes along, which should be soon. Ilene Cooper

"New and Improved" 2004 Edition Leaves Room for Improvement
By Dwight Blubaugh
I found lots of annoying aspects to this 2004 Third Edition of Shapiro's J. K. Rowling biography.

What had to be the most annoying was that Shapiro apparently just slapped extra material at the end of the book each time he came out with a new edition. At the end of what must have been the original 2001 edition, Shapiro talks about 2001 events in the present tense, and about looking forward to what will come in 2002. This appears to be the case again where the 2002 edition must have originally ended. Apparently there was no major revision of the material in the earlier editions for this new 2004 edition - it was simply added to for each new edition.

Among other weaknesses, the book is very repetitive and choppy, with the chronology often disorganized. Also, the author's personal comments did not seem very insightful. He mentions several times what a good husband and father Rowling's second husband is and how happy the marriage is, not as a quote from anyone, but just as stated "fact."

The book contained plenty of good and interesting information, and I believe that the inaccuracies that other reviewers mentioned from earlier editions have been mostly corrected (as it matched most information I've read from other sources, which Shapiro is often good about citing). However, some major editing needs to be done on the book.
