About the Author

Marc Aronson is an author, editor, publisher, speaker, historian, and book producer. His mission is to inspire young people to ask questions, to look around, behind, and inside of the stories the world tells us. He writes a monthly column for School Library Journal on nonfiction for younger readers, and frequently speaks about boys and reading. Marc's books have been awarded the Robert F. Sibert Award for the best in children's nonfiction and selected as a New York Times Notable Book and a School Library Journal best book. In 2006, he was given the ALAN Award by NCTE for service to teenagers, and was named the local spokesman for the History Channel's Save Our History program. He lives with his wife and two sons in Maplewood, New Jersey.

H. P. Newquist has authored more than a dozen books for both children and adults, including the critically acclaimed The Great Brain Book (Scholastic, 2005). To prepare for For Boys Only, Mr. Newquist went scuba diving with sharks in Australia, climbed the Great Pyramid in Egypt, drove some really fast cars, learned a few magic tricks, and read more books than he can count.

My kids love it.

My son LOVES THIS BOOK! Even the littlest one wants me to read it to him. It could be better and be updated since it's been a while now since the last edition but yeah. Book is good.

Almost-10-yr-old LOVES this book!

My nearly 10-yr-old son begged me to buy this book for him, and he has been transfixed ever since it arrived! He brings it in the car with him to read! He is in the advanced reading section in school, but I think this book would appeal to a wide age range. I wish I'd thought to keep it to give him during our summer vacation, but the way it's going, he'll be completely through it by then! And to parents -- the content isn't really "bad" -- it's just the right kind of intriguing to keep a young boy's attention -- i.e., breaking codes, spy secrets, obscure trivia, etc.

Route 66

My daughter and I loved this book when we 'did' Route 66 in 2008. She was 19 at the time, and this was her trip. Thanks to recommendations in "Let's Go Roadtripping" we paid only $40-some dollars for a room in the Towers Hotel and Suites in Tulsa OK - complete with a king bed and whirlpool tub - when pouring rain had soaked our tiny camper. We dined on Mr D'z sweet potato fries in Kingman, AZ. And we had to try fry bread at the Olive Oatman Restaurant and Saloon in Oatman, AZ - where the waiter sang a bit of Johnny Cash to us. On the return trip we used some of the suggestions from the "Oregon Trail" trip. And last fall Kaylyn (now 23) and I 'did' New England. Again we turned to this book for the portions of the trip following old route 1. Our next trip... can't wait!

This book shares classic road trips across the US. It plans out the route, what hotels to stay in and where to eat. There is some history about roads in the front which is interesting for families. It would make a good book for family roadtrips as it also has games to play during roadtrips.

Spectacular Undersea Suspense Thriller

David Golemon comes back stronger than ever in this fourth fabulous installment of The Event Group stories. When you open Leviathan, you will find yourself in the immediate spot where the author left us off in The Ancients. The time is just a few weeks later after that roller coaster ride in Atlantis that left us minus one key player and our favorite action hero. Leviathan starts off with an intriguing prologue of a past story in the year 1802, that gives us the flavor of The Count of Monte Cristo and offers the reader something a bit different in style to Golemons' norm. This Event Group novel is written a bit differently than the previous three books in that although we maintain the high tech military black ops action scenes, with all Golemon's favorite big boy toys, the action is more realistic and the writing a bit more polished and literary to create one hell of a darn good novel. Books one and two had us diving for cover with some pretty scary monsters that had us all terrified yet craving for more. This episode gives us creatures as well, sentient and magical one moment, mischievous and murderous the next as they plot revenge against mankind.

Leviathan's main theme is a mysterious anomaly found in the ocean's depths. Golemon turns this story into a clever and creative twist on Jules Verne's 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. A Swedish family of genius level scientists have been creating monstrous submarines with technology far advanced than our current world has the capacity to create. The current Captain of the Leviathan is a female descendant of the original inventor and is now cruising the worlds' seas hell-bent on warning the nations of earth that if they do not clean up their act, and stop global oil spillage and polluting the oceans, she will wreak havoc detonating multiple missiles in many world sea ports. Guilty parties are to immediately cease their ships from leaving their harbors with dangerous toxic wastes currently harming and killing many species of sea life, including her own. The reader is kept on pins and needles throughout this fantastical nautical yarn and is left right up to the finale still questioning who and what this beautiful yet volatile Captain Nemo-like mistress of the sea is.

The wonders of the mechanics and technology of this super sub are very cool entertainment ingredients, and the story packs in the usual humor, adventure, and action that the Event Group series usually provides. A bit of Tom Clancy, a dash of James Rollins, sprinkled with Alexander Dumas and my beloved Jules Verne, and a mysterious organism akin to what made all Stargate fans cringe, all stir up a rip-roaring page turning thriller that I believe is one of the best of the series yet. Golemon has not let us down and continues to show us that his talent is here for the long haul as each book gets better and better. Even a little tender sweet romance graces Leviathan showing us the author has a soft spot along with his love of high tech weaponry, military vehicles and futuristic sci-fi gadgetry. Two thumbs up, this was fantastic from start to finish.

Mr. Golemon is BACK on track with Leviathan

Let me say I absolutely LOVED 'Event'...what a great first novel. I've introduced countless friends and radio listeners to this book and so far, each one of them have let me know that I made a great recommendation. When I heard a sequel was coming, well, you can imagine my interest and excitement. Unfortunately, 'Legend' wasn't quite as all-out entertaining, but still fun. 'Ancients' was slightly less so than 'Legend' and I was beginning to worry that the vast majority of creative steam of this author was already spent.

I was wrong. 'Leviathan' is at first, the most full-bore exciting novel I've read so far in the last couple months. Sure, its unbelievable--but guess what? I simply don't care. The story begins way back in the early 1800's and lays the groundwork for a fun and let me say, VERY action oriented tale. I must say that another reviewer got it absolutely correct by saying 'Leviathan' was written a bit differently than the first 3 books...and by that, let me explain: It kind of reminded me what an adventure tale would be like had it been written by Tom Clancy. I hope that makes sense.

A chunk of the story is spent inside the hull of a submarine, and if nothing else, I am a HUGE fan of sub stories--especially the well-told really fun ones. Oh yeah, I can't say for certain, but the storyline in part seems to pay tribute to Jules Verne, and I must say, all done very well, too. I believe Mr. Verne would be proud.

The inclusion of a traitor was a nice touch--and certainly ratcheted up the tension quite a bit (where it was already at to begin with). While I wouldn't say that 'Leviathan' breaks new ground by any stretch, what really counts as far as I am concerned, is quite simply this: did I feel that my money was well spent by purchasing the book? The answer is an absolute YES. For those 'Event' fans who are on the fence regarding giving this one a try...? Go ahead and take the plunge. I still feel the original 'Event' is the best in this series, but 'Leviathan' makes it a close second.

He's done it again!

What a WILD RIDE! I'm a HUGE fan of thrillers and this one hits the spot dead on. I hated this book to end. I looked forward every day to reading a couple of chapters trying to make it last longer. I liked the way Goleman starts the beginning of the book, rewriting history a little bit as a "What If" twist to it. I'm not into writing reviews much, but he deserves some press. I liked his other 3 books also, Event, Legends, Ancients. I also read james Rollins, Vince Flynn, Daniel Silva, etc. The author Goleman reminds me of is another upstart, Jeremy Robinson. Great imaginations. LOVE IT!

P.S. I'll be waiting for the return of "Matchstick" Mr. Goleman!

Intriguing story with some flawed writing and extra Exclamations!

This is the first of the series that I have read, and I found it entertaining and surprising, but I also found it annoying for a number of reasons, some of which might be related to translation but include extreme over-use of exclamation points! not just in quotations but all over the text! which was quite distracting! and strange descriptions that just did not make sense ie. "His eyes above the beard were fixed on the girl's breasts." pg 245. Uhh, were his eyes below the beard fixed somewhere else? Is that a typo? I found myself scratching my head at quite a few passages like that and wondering, "is it poorly translated, or poorly written?" Also, I found the dialogue to be, at times, difficult to read for awkwardness (not to mention inexplicable excitement!!!). There were all types of implied meanings that apparently were shared between speakers but that were completely lost on me. Okay, that could be my thick-headedness or the fact that I was distracted! I will fully admit that. But I don't have that problem with many other books, so it leads me to believe that it has to do with the writing, and not my reading.
In conclusion, despite these complaints I never once considered stopping Lethal Investments, and like I said the story is interesting while the two inspectors are well developed characters, buuuut there are definitely some frustrating issues. It will likely be quite a while before I feel up to trying this author again, but I probably will, as I love the genre.

These days, every single crime and thriller writer emerging from the desolate tundra known as Scandinavia owes a debt of thanks to the late Stieg Larsson. If not for the incredible international success (posthumously) of his GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO trilogy Western readers might never have been introduced to terrific talents like Henning Mankell, Jo Nesbo, Camilla Lackberg and Anne Holt.

Seeking to add his name to this growing list is Norwegian author, K.O. Dahl. He has already won a handful of literary awards in his home country and now is attempting to breakthrough to American readers. LETHAL INVESTMENTS is actually the fourth novel in the series that features Inspectors Frolich and Gunnarstranda.

Set primarily in the Norwegian capital of Oslo, this novel is not set against a cold and mysterious phone call at her apartment where no one appears to be on the other end of the line. Shortly thereafter, her dead body is spotted through her slightly ajar apartment door by the child of her neighbors.

Just prior to being killed she had spent the evening with a young man named Sigurd. Once they learn of his existence, Frolich and Gunnarstranda immediately push him to the top of their list for potential suspects. After questioning him and detaining him they have no choice but to let him go until they can produce more evidence. This becomes complicated when the body of Sigurd is found with his throat brutally slashed.

Frolich and Gunnarstranda now realize that the pair was murdered because of something they knew or may have seen in Reidun's apartment. This leads them to Reidun's place of business --- a highly suspicious and sparsely populated software company aptly named, Software Partners. The few employees all seem to have something to hide and most of the men appeared to have had a physical relationship with Reidun. Which way to go?

Further investigation into Software Partners reveals the organization to be a complete sham. They would acquire capital from investors without actually producing any work. The businessmen duped into partnership with the organization would reveal a small amount once the company went under while those behind its' creation would become quite wealthy.

Reidun Rosendal must have had some documentation or other item of significance about Software Partners that was worth killing over. When another employee is found murdered, Frolich and Gunnarstranda must step up their investigation before all potential witnesses are eliminated and a clever killer is allowed to walk away untouched. LETHAL INVESTMENTS is a quick-paced read that gets bogged down slightly in the middle with a few extraneous plot-lines and extra characters. However, Frolich and Gunnarstranda make a good team and the novel is at its' best when they are hammering through suspects to find the murderer.

An excellent read

I love this author, and I love dark books. I didn't think that K.O. Dahl went overboard with the international scene as one of the reviewers said, the author touched on many crimes that many of us choose not to know about, but at some point we have to take our heads out of the sand and realize that they really do happen. Full of twists, turns, unexpected things - some of those unexpected things are not dealt with in a more detailed manner as I think that they should have been, but it didn't make me like the book less, because if Dahl had dealt with those things in detail it would have been a 1000 page book. I will continue to read Dahl's works.

So far the best in this series - 5 plus!!

Ethan Damont is a gambler, recruited by the Crown and also the French to each spy on each other. Ethan's prior claim to fame had been fleecing money from the ton and he has quite a reputation as a rouge. He was just going through life without any purpose, no real cares, no thoughts of the future, but not really that happy either. As so many of these rouges he was beginning to become bored and restless.

Lord Maywell is who the Crown wants Ethan to spy on. And as luck would have it he just happens to have a gorgeous niece, Lady Jane. This becomes such an interesting of matches. The dialog between this couple is so witty, so clever and sharp, so well done. I just loved them. Ethan and his thoughts and conversations he has with himself over patriotism, honor and what he believes and feels is such a unique storyline.

Although the love scenes are at a minimum the ones included are incredibly hot. The one in the carriage is a classic! I mean this really was a highly engaging couple. Sometimes the plots in this series kind of take over for the romance but not in this story. And oh my the secrets that are revealed are so cleverly done. I cannot give this book a high enough rating. For me it really was one of Bradley's very best. It deserves five incredible stars and it was a classic end to a incredible series.

B+/A- what pulls this up to an A- is the clever plot and action scenes, Ethan's character development, and continuing the saga

In this romance, the hero really is the main character and focus of the story. And we watch him try to court the heroine. (I'd say the book is 80% his and 20% the heroine's.) He likes to gamble esp. w/ cards - and that's how he's earned his living - he cheats too - he'll take money from the rich and spoiled and ungrateful without feeling guilty at all. And he's damn good at it. Ethan truly is a commoner, the son of a fabric merchant and a seamstress - he was sent to a rich school (where he met his only friend, Collis from book 4) where he didn't fit in and didn't excel and only disappointed his father. And learned to cheat really well. This is the best "commoner" hero I've read about so far - and in my opinion even better than Lisa Kleypas' "commoner heroes" - b/c he's not dangerous or violent - he's not bitter - he's not raging or out to prove anything - he just wants to live a happy cozy life gambling through card games taking money from the rich and drinking fine brandy and if there's a woman involved - great. that's fine too. He'd rather not take sides in anything. But he would like to "belong". Ethan Damont is only invited into the high-society b/c others want to play cards w/ him - he knows he doesn't belong and the ton would never DREAM of actually inviting him for dinner or a special formal occasion and they especially wouldn't introduce him to their daughters. At night he goes home (his posh yet cozy bachelor house in London) to ONE butler and ONE cook. He wants nothing to do with spies or England or the crown or danger - he just wants to be the desperado - and enjoy finer things in life like fashionable clothes and his favorite label of brandy and smoking cher-roots and of course - playing cards. Imagine a REALLY HOT Johnny Depp - but alas - the Liar's club needs him. He was much too involved in investigation against Lord Maywell (book 5 picks up right where he helps out in book 4). He doesn't WANT to help the Liars but they're not exactly "blackmailing" him - but he's not exactly a "tax-paying" man and he's sort of "obliged" to help them esp. now that he "knows" too much already....so he ends up frequenting Lord Maywell's house for cards and meeting the lovely Lady Jane of course . . .

Lady Jane really is a mystery and I remember thinking around the first quarter of the book, "What is UP with this heroine?!" We know so little about her except she flirts w/ Ethan and they kind of have a thing developing - she's a little sheltered but she's REALLY gutsy and you can tell she's smart . . . but we haven't really been told her past yet...

Fabulous Celeste Bradley plot. layers and turns. This book especially blends well with the previous book The Charmer. I've never been irritated w/ Bradley introducing and involving previous characters from the other books - (Whereas with other series authors, I find this gets VERY annoying after a while.) WARNING - SPOILER: I read a review that criticized the plot saying that Ethan should've known better that the infamous "Bedlam" institution was dangerous and he never would've sent Jane there if he was smarter. What that reviewer probably missed (which is why I NEVER skim through Bradley's books) is that Ethan made a gamble with the villain (Jane's uncle) and chose for Jane to be sent to "Bethlehem Hospital" b/c he believed she would be safer there out of her uncle's harm. However her evil uncle sent her to Bedlam institution instead against Ethan's knowledge b/c he didn't have the authorization papers - and when the carriage stopped outside of Bedlam - THEN Ethan realized he had been duped by the villain and he had to save Jane.

The rescue escape scene had me rolling on the floor and grinning like an idiot with laughter!!!! It is by far the CLEVEREST rescue scene I have EVER read in a romance. I don't care if Bradley had to go to extremes in the plot just to fit it in - I'm SOOOOO glad that she did!!!

Finally, three cheers for Bradley for showing us a romance where the hero is the one who reinvents himself and deals with the struggles and human error and he isn't the perfect one where we read about it and end up thinking, "oh of course every hero is like that". His mantra and personality and wit is unlike anything I've ever read yet. I'd give it a B+/A- (what pulls this up to an A- is the clever plot and action scenes, Ethan's character development, and continuing with the drama of the Liars and the Royal Four!) Celeste Bradley fans would appreciate this - but if this is the very first book of hers you read you'll probably think "WTH is going on?!?"
