The electrifying follow-up to the Dagger Award–winning Raven Black

In this second thriller of the highly acclaimed Shetland Island series featuring Inspector Jimmy Perez, the launch of an exhibition at The Herring House art gallery is disturbed by a stranger who bursts into tears, then claims not to remember who he is or where he comes from. The next day he's found dead. Set in midsummer, the book captures the unsettling nature of a landscape where the sun never quite sets and where people are not as they first seem.

From Publishers Weekly
In Dagger-winner Cleeves's uneven second installment in her Shetland Island quartet (after Raven Black), Insp. Jimmy Perez sees a stranger sobbing in front of a painting at an art exhibit featuring the work of Perez's new girlfriend, Fran Hunter, and mythic local painter Bella Sinclair. Claiming to be suffering from amnesia, the unknown man disappears before Perez can question him further, but turns up dead that same night, hanged in a fishing shed. In his investigation, Perez focuses on Bella, whose talent is matched by her penchant for drama and extravagant parties. When another body turns up, Perez must sift through generations of closely guarded island secrets to find the truth. Despite characters as vivid as those in Raven Black, Cleeves struggles to sustain a suspenseful plot, which slows to a crawl in the middle and packs too much action at the end. Still, this slight misstep shouldn't deter fans of the introspective Perez from looking forward to Cleeves's next thriller. (Sept.)

From Booklist
Everyone is a bit mad during midsummer in the Shetland Islands, they say. Detective Jimmy Perez (making his second appearance, following last year’s Raven Black, in what Cleeves bills as the Shetland Island Quartet) is unsettled with the prospect of a new romance. Meanwhile, Perez’s love interest, an artist, is a shambles at the prospect of having her work exhibited for the first time at a local gallery opening. But these small anxieties pale beside the spectacle of a man who falls to his knees, weeping, in front of a painting at the exhibit. This same man, a tourist, is later found hanged in a fishing hut, his face obscured by a clown mask. Cleeves knows how to do eerie—from the clown mask motif that moves disturbingly throughout the novel, to her depiction of the rough beauty of the Shetland Islands, and all the way through her plotting, which mixes the disturbingly dreamlike with the realistically grotesque. Gripping from start to finish. --Connie Fletcher

Although I thoroughly enjoyed the first book in the Shetland series
By Lulu
Although I thoroughly enjoyed the first book in the Shetland series, I did not like this one at all. So bland. Just couldn't get into it. I was up for another mystery and in spite of the fact that other reviewers liked it and said it was more character driven than her first book, I decided to try it. My mistake! I found it too boring. I did buy one of another Cleeve series, however. It IS a mystery and I have great hopes.....

a good solid story
By cait
"White Nights" is the second in what the author calls her "Shetland Island Quartet" and that is a grand thing. Grand because now I know I can go back and read the first in the series, Raven Black, and still have two more to book forward to in the future. Excellent!

Police Detective Inspector Jimmy Perez and his friend, Fran Hunter are about to go to an art showing at a local gallery in the town of Biddista. For Perez, he hopes this will be the chance to find out if their relationship will move beyond friendship in the future, for Fran, the first gallery showing of her art. But things are not to go smoothly. Few people show up for the show, a bizarre stranger causes a scene, and the next morning, the same man is found dead, hanging in a storage building on the beach. Although there was an attempt to make it look otherwise, the death was certainly murder and all the people connected with the small seaside community are suspect in the investigation, carried on by Perez and later, the Inverness police team brought in, headed by Inspector Roy Taylor.

The atmosphere of the book is engaging. Summer in the islands, because of the latitude, has only a few hours of dusty night each day and the constant light is said to have a crazy effect on people. Combine that with the constant presence of the sea, the treeless windswept hills, dotted with sheep, the fog off shore, always threatening to roll in once again, and the Shetlands themselves are almost like another character in the story.

Not to say that the characters themselves are not very good, because they are. Yes, it is a small community where many people are related and, if not, have often known each others all their lives. They think that they know everything about their neighbors but it turns out everyone, the locals and the outsiders alike, have their secrets. And those secrets are yet to take another great toll on the townsfolk.

This was a fine book, an excellent setting, very good characters, large and small, a engaging story and a very good read. I would certainly recommend it to mystery fans and I know I will be searching out more of Ann Cleeves books.

Moody, engaging tale
By Martha Reece
Interesting, likable, realistic characters. Setting was great --- Shetland Islands! And provides some insight into the culture. Storyline was engaging, although this is almost more of a mood piece than a gripping whodunit. Thoroughly enjoyed the book

Book of Shadows, by Alexandra Sokoloff

Homicide detective Adam Garrett is already a rising star in the Boston police department when he and his cynical partner, Carl Landauer, catch a horrifying case that could make their careers: the ritualistic murder of a wealthy college girl that appears to have Satanic elements.

The partners make a quick arrest when all evidence points to another student, a troubled musician in a Goth band who was either dating or stalking the murdered girl. But Garrett’s case is turned upside down when beautiful, mysterious Tanith Cabarrus, a practicing witch from nearby Salem, walks into the homicide bureau and insists that the real perpetrator is still at large. Tanith claims to have had psychic visions that the killer has ritually sacrificed other teenagers in his attempts to summon a powerful, ancient demon.

All Garrett's beliefs about the nature of reality will be tested as he is forced to team up with a woman he is fiercely attracted to but cannot trust, in a race to uncover a psychotic killer before he strikes again.

From Publishers Weekly
At the start of Sokoloff's solid crime thriller, the discovery in a landfill of the mutilated corpse of Erin Carmody, the 18-year-old daughter of a prominent Boston businessman, presents homicide detective Adam Garrett with a particularly sensitive case. Marks on the body suggest the killer was conducting Satanic rituals. When Adam and his partner, Carl Landauer, question the prime suspect, Jason Moncrief, a college friend of Erin's, Jason chants the name of the demon Choronzon, then assaults Carl. Despite what appears to be an open-and-shut case, Adam can't discount the claim that Jason is innocent made by Tanith Cabarrus, an attractive witch who comes to police headquarters to report that she dreamed of other murders—and who believes that supernatural forces are behind the slaughter. As usual, Sokoloff (The Unseen) does a good job keeping the reader guessing whether a supernatural agency is really at work. (June)

Review

“A wonderfully dark thriller with amazing is-it-isn't-it suspense all the way to the end. Highly recommended.”---Lee Child

Praise for The Unseen

“Sokoloff keeps her story enticingly ambiguous, never clarifying until the climax whether the unfolding weirdness might be the result of the investigators’ psychic sensitivities or the mischievous handiwork of a human villain.”---Publishers Weekly

“The suspense starts on page one, tightening the noose on every page with increasing velocity to a stunning, fearsome climax. Ms. Sokoloff has created a chilling, fantastic supernatural thriller that will have you fearing what you can’t see.”---Allison Brennan, New York Times bestselling author of Sudden Death

“A spine-tingling story that has every indication of becoming a horror classic . . . this is a chillingly dark look into the unknown. 4 1/2 stars.”---RT Book Reviews

“A masterful blend of fascinating fact and chilling fiction . . . an unsettling and highly entertaining horror/thriller read.”---BookBitch.com

Shadowy Elements = "The Book of Shadows"
By Emily
I'll admit--I haven't read a mystery in ages--and as I was gazing at my bookshelf Tuesday night desperately trying to find something quick to read--I stumbled across this book that I received as an ARC many moons ago at a public library convention. I read the back cover and thought...Witches? Grimoires? Murder?...that isn't my usual fare, but I wanted to try something different, so I grabbed it off the shelf and took it to the gym with me where I devoured the first 100 pages in an hour on the treadmill. I figure if I have to slave away at burning calories, I might as well enjoy myself. But I digress....
Book of Shadows puts detective Adam Garrett against the forces of evil, conjured up by a novice witch who unknowingly releases a power much greater than himself known as Choronzon. Garrett and his partner, Landauer, are investigating the murder of an upper class college student, Erin Carmody, when they discover satanic carvings and evidence of ritualistic crime associated with Satanism and Witchcraft. Although the two quickly have a suspect in custody, a local witch and psychic who is convinced the police have the wrong character enters the picture. Tanith is mysterious, sexy, and holds a number of answers to the information the detectives are seeking. The plot moves along quickly as another young woman goes missing and the detectives race against the clock (and Chorozon) to save her....or find her remains.
I found this book entertaining and fun to read. It was like biting into a great piece of cake that you want to savour for a long time and enjoy its sweetness. But it is cake--and that's ultimately what I took from it. A fun way to spend an afternoon and a bit of a guilty pleasure.
The sex scenes played out like a steamy (and raunchy) novel and were quite full of cliche's...and the ending was a bit cheesy for my taste as well and somewhat hard to believe. But all in all, I had fun with this one, and that's what it's ultimately about, right???

Homicide, Witches,Demons, Detectives, Oh My!
By William Bentrim
Book of Shadows by Alexandra Sokoloff

A brutal murder becomes a paranormal nightmare for a pair of Boston homicide detectives. Adam Garrett finds himself unwilling to believe and yet unwilling to turn away from "wicked" help is solving some horrific murders.

Adam is a solid skeptic who struggles with inexplicable behavior. Garrett's internal strife between his burning ambition and his overwhelming need to serve justice provides a lot of the tension in this book. A high profile murder with an easy solution seems like an ideal situation to feed his ambition and sate his "perfect" girlfriends need for a status successful mate.

Landauer's gruff concern for Garrett's well being and his stalwart loyalty were laudable emotions aptly illustrated by the author. She did a great job at creating believable characters and seemingly rational explanations for irrational behaviors.

I've never been a fan of satanic evil fare but this book combines a solid mystery and main stream acceptable protagonists with the, oh too popular, paranormal strife in a highly readable format. I liked it.
I recommend the book.

An Outstanding Collection of Stories and Writers
By Big Daddy
This anthology was something I stumbled upon in college and completely changed the way I approached reading and writing. The stories are a wide variety and the writers writing about writing is a fantastic resource. This is one of the most precious pieces to my library and a must for any serious reader and writer.

Course Book I Actually Want to Keep Reading
By Book Maiden
This compilation of short stories was used for my Intro. to the Short Story college course. Our professor only picked out certain stories but I found myself reading unassigned stories myself. Some of these stories are wonderful. My favorite was "The Widow's Son" by Mary Lavin. Some other noteworthy stories: "Hills Like White Elephants" Hemingway, "Girl" by J. Kincaid. Too many more to list, a course book I am actually keeping so I can finish reading it. Usually I can't wait to close them after the course and not see them anymore! :)

Wonderful Anthology
By Shelly
This is the 6th edition of this great anthology. Even if you have an earlier edition, this one is worth acquiring. With each edition, Prof. Charters drops some short stories and adds others. For example, the 6th edition has about 70 stories that did not appear in the 3rd edition (while omitting a similar number). The story selections are excellent and the author biographies are very informative. The appendices include fantastic commentaries by authors on other authors, and sections on the history of short stories, and on interpreting, writing, and writing about short stories. The used book versions are a steal! If you have any interest in short stories, you won't go wrong with one of Ann Charters anthologies.

Dali & I: The Surreal Story, by Stan Lauryssens

An extraordinary memoir of fortune, fraud, and the master of modern art

Art dealer Stan Lauryssens made millions in modern art, but he sold only one name: Salvador Dalí. The surrealist painter’s work was a hot commodity for the newly rich, investors, and shady businessmen looking to launder their black-market cash. Stan didn’t mind looking the other way; he just hoped the buyers would look the other way as well. The artworks he sold came from some very questionable sources, but he soon discovered that the shadiest source of all was Dalí himself.

The more successful Stan became, the closer he came to Dalí, until he found himself living next door to the aging artist, in the Catalonian hills. While hiding from Interpol’s detectives, Stan spent his time with the artists, musicians, business associates, and eccentrics who surrounded Dalí. He learned about Dalí’s secret history, the studio of artists who produced his work, and the moneymaking machine that kept Dalí’s extravagant lifestyle afloat long after his creativity began to flounder.

Dalí & I offers a behind-the-scenes view of the commerce and conspiracy that go hand in hand in the international art world, written by a man who has been to the top only to discover that it’s not so different from the bottom.

From Booklist
Dalí’s surreal images—melting clocks, weird landscapes, women as fleshy bureaus with drawers open—sold like crazy, but most of the paintings, drawings, and prints, including those hanging in the world’s best museums, are fakes. Lauryssens, an award-winning European crime writer, boldly confesses his role in spreading the plague of phony Dalís in a jaw-dropping chronicle of jet-set swindling matched by an X-rated portrait-in-glimpses of one of the freakiest of art celebrities. As if the story of Lauryssens’ leap from working in a Belgian cheese factory to amassing a fortune hustling works by Dalí and hiding from Interpol in the only house in sight of Dalí’s Catalan holdfast isn’t tantalizing enough, he also enters the inner circle of Dalí intimates and collects bizarre, grotesque tales of voyeuristic Dalí’s “sex circuses”; the voraciousness of his sex-addicted, money-mad wife, Gala; and the truth about who created Dalí’s late works and the “McDalí” carnival of fraud. It’s all terribly decadent, hard to believe, and enormously diverting. No wonder a movie starring Al Pacino and Cillian Murphy is in the works. --Donna Seaman

Review

“The art market is a dark circus of hope and deceit. Lauryssens provides us with an intimate portrait of Dalí, its mustachioed ringmaster: as eccentric as he is ingenious, as manipulative as he is fascinating.”---Noah Charney, author of The Art Thief

“A highly readable blend of memoir and picaresque, Stan Lauryssens’s book explores the differences between the genuine and the bogus, not only in the business of art, but more important, in human relationships.”---James Sexton, editor of Selected Letters of Aldous Huxley

About the Author

Belgium-born Stan Lauryssens was an art dealer specializing in works by Salvador Dalí for over a decade. After spending time in prison for the sale of bogus Dalís, he turned to writing crime fiction. He won Belgium’s Hercule Poirot Award in 2002 for best crime fiction of the year. He now divides his time between Antwerp and London.

A Mad Genius From A Distance
By R. A. Miesem
I have been a fan of Salvador Dali's work since I first saw the iconic soft watches lying on a surreal landscape many, many years ago. It was always apparent to me that Dali was a lunatic, and that was part of the appeal. He was a mad genius who crafted some of the greatest and most inventive art the world had ever seen. It surprised me, then, that I so much appreciated a work like this, which paints a very different portrait of Dali. We see him as a pervert, a madman without reason, a man obsessed with nothing more than money, and (above all else) a complete fraud.

Are the claims Lauryssens puts forth any more genuine than those Dali put forth about himself? Did he invite celebrities and dignitaries to wild sex parties for his masturbatory pleasure? Was he the engineer of fraud on such a grand scale? Nobody can say for sure. The truth is probably somewhere between Dali's claims and those of Stan Lauryssens.

Whether it's true or not is really not material to the quality of this work. Stan Lauryssens is an engaging writer purging his conscience and his memory for the pleasure of those readers who desire a more intimate portrait of arguably the most famous surrealist to ever walk the face of the earth.

What is second hand and what is ex-libris
By R. Sinclair
I was pleased with the speed of the service but disappointed that it was not made clear that the purchase was an ex-libris copy rather than secondhand. The dustwrapper was glued to the front and back boards and this was not made clear. Not costly enough to complain and return but still disappointing.

A Tale of Two Swindlers
By Kevin Joseph
Dali & I, a memoir of the wild ride Stan Lauryssens experienced as a high-flying dealer of Salvador Dali's artwork, sketches Dali as a grotesque human incarnation of the twisted surrealism that inspired his art. By placing his own name alongside Dali's in the title and acknowledging his own moral shortcomings as a trafficker in fraudulent Dali art, Lauryssens seeks to redeem himself (or at least rationalize his misdeeds) as the inevitable byproduct of the aging Dali's lack of artistic integrity and the greedy consumerism of wealthy art investors.

The beginning of the book is a major hoot, recounting with how Lauryssens rose from a menial job punching holes in Emmentaler cheese, to a stint as a writer for a bogus Hollywood magazine, to a millionaire reseller of Dali art. His conversational writing style, peppered with anecdotes from close associates of Dali, makes for an easy, engaging read. And the descriptions of Spain's Catalonia region, along with its impact on Dali's art, have a poetic quality about them.

Some of his swindling war stories carry a strong whiff of exaggeration, yet I have little doubt that greed and gullibility generated many easy marks for his fraudulent transactions. The author's often second- or third-hand accounts of Dali's wild orgies and penchant for signing his name to voluminous amounts of art he did not produce are still harder to accept at face value. Though Lauryssens undoubtedly traveled in Dali's circles, writes with convincing detail, and is not the first to question the authenticity of some of Dali's later works, he would have us believe that the majority of Dali's body of art is inauthentic, including many famous paintings on display in museums around the world.

A tad too convenient of a theory, perhaps, serving the twin purposes of minimizing the import of the author's own fraudulent acts (how guilty can he have been if the entire post-1930s Dali collection is suspect) and generating controversy and buzz for his book. And with a major movie starring Al Pacino as Dali in the works for release in 2009, I can't help but wonder if Dali & I represents yet another sleight of hand from this master of the trade. My advice: read the book (it's a lot of fun, after all) and judge its veracity for yourself!

If you want to know the where and when about a specific festival so you can plan your trip around certain cities and events, or need to know which arrondisement is safest at night, or which hotels offer a bath and shower in the room, then this book is for you. Small enough to carry in a medium or larger sized handbag or backpack, this helpful paperback gives the modern traveler the how-to information to enable you to see the best of France, the most venues in towns large or small, options on how to best navigate, and includes maps as well. Book Description
What if the hottest guy in the world was hiding a nameless evil and all he wanted was you?

At the start of this heart-pounding new installment of the bestselling House of Night series, Zoey's friends have her back again and Stevie Rae and the red fledglings aren't Neferet's secrets any longer.  But an unexpected danger has emerged. Neferet guards her powerful new consort, Kalona, and no one at the House of Night seems to understand the threat he poses.  Kalona looks gorgeous, and he has the House of Night under his spell. A past life holds the key to breaking his rapidly spreading influence, but what if this past life shows Zoey secrets she doesn't want to hear and truths she can't face?

On the run and holed up in Tulsa's Prohibition-era tunnels, Zoey and her gang must discover a way to deal with something that might bring them all down.  Meanwhile, Zoey has a few other little problems.  The red fledglings have cleaned up well--they've even managed to make the dark, creepy tunnels feel more like home--but are they really as friendly as they seem?  On the boyfriend front, Zoey has a chance to make things right with super-hot ex-, Eric, but she can't stop thinking about Stark, the archer who died in her arms after one unforgettable night, and she is driven to try to save him from Neferet's sinister influence at all costs.  Will anyone believe the power evil has to hide among us?

An Interview with P.C. Cast

Amazon.com: Why vampyres? What was intriguing to you about them? (Also, why "y"?)

P.C. Cast: Actually, the idea for the series originated with my fabulous agent, Meredith Bernstein. We were at RWA [Romance Writers of America] Nationals in Reno several years ago and Meredith said she had an idea for a series she'd like to see me write. Then she said the three magic words: vampire finishing school. I instantly thought of YA because I'd been reading the Hawksong books by Amelia Atwater-Rhodes--so my head was already in YA. Also, I've been teaching high school English since 1993 (I'm from a family of teachers) so I definitely knew my audience. Basically, it sounded like fun to write, so I jumped in even though I'd only written fantasy and paranormal romance up until then.

Oh, and the spelling is just my choice 'cause I like the way it looks!

Amazon.com: I don't want to draw too many comparisons between your series and Twilight, because they are completely different types of stories. However, I am curious if the popularity of that series has changed the way you see your genre, or do you even see it being the same genre?

PC: I see my genre as YA, and to me that encompasses everyone from Rowling to Laurie Halse Anderson to Janice Erlbaum. So, yes, Twilight fits in the same genre. And while I enjoy Ms. Meyer's books very much, I think the genre has been growing and changing and gaining popularity steadily over the past decade--mostly thanks to Ms. Rowling! As a high school English teacher I certainly noticed the increase in sophistication and popularity of the genre some time ago. Today's YA has an incredible range and depth, and it deals with real coming of age issues in varied and interesting ways. I'm proud to be a member of the ranks of YA authors!

Amazon.com: Can you talk a little bit about the role that religion plays in the novels? The whole series revolves around the worship of Nyx, the Goddess of Night, and Hunted really digs into questions of faith and free will (often related to what guy Zoey will be drawn to next...very clever to make that her weakness!). At various points in the series you also have People of Faith, Catholic nuns, and Cherokee legend. How do you see all these elements working together?

PC: Very clever of you to recognize the ramifications of Zoey's weakness!

It's easy for me to weave the different religious elements of the world together because it's not really "religion" I'm dealing with when I create the conflicts and faith foundations in the House of Night. Instead I see it as a way to illuminate coming of age issues, which often deal with conformity and obsession and trying to learn boundaries. I chose to give my heroine a belief system in which to live that is matriarchal because my purpose is to empower young women, and by allowing Zoey to join a world where women are valued as leaders and really have no glass ceiling, except the ones they create for themselves, as exemplified by Neferet, I have a springboard for a lot of girl power.

Amazon.com: What were some of your influences for the House of Night school?

PC: South Intermediate High School in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma! I just looked around me and wrote what I saw. I also write what I wish I could see, as in the amazing HoN facility and their very cool classes. I'd love to teach a Vampyre Sociology class!

Amazon.com: How has Kristin being in school affected the series as it's progressed? The scenes with friends hanging out and geeking out on movies in the dorm seem pretty familiar...

PC: When the series started Kristin was nineteen and was still living at home her first semester in college. And then when she did move out it certainly wasn't into a dorm that looked as cool as the House of Night dorms! But she does DEFINITELY geek out with her friends. (She's going to kill me for that…)

Amazon.com: When did the two of you decide to write a book together? How does your writing process work?

PC: I brought Kristin in while I was writing the first three chapters of Marked. I kept stumbling over silly little things, like specific slang that I thought I knew, but found out once I started writing about teenagers that MY deeply buried inner teen from the 70's kept trying to resurface and butt in with her slang! Kristin keeps me straight about that. She also says she keeps Zoey from "sounding like a 40-something disgruntled school teacher." Sigh.

We're on book six of the series, and we have the process down. We do some brainstorming, then I write the first draft, often asking Kristin questions right in the manuscript or leaving blanks for her to fill in. Then I send the entire thing to her, and she goes through it, answering questions, filling in blanks, and asking me questions/making comments of her own. She sends it back to me and I go through it again. Then it's ready to go to St. Martin's and our lovely editor, Jennifer Weis. It sounds like a tedious process, but it's really very freeing for me. I can write whatever and know Kristin has my back.

Amazon.com: Zoey has a few mother-daughter-like relationships--with her mom, her grandma, Neferet, Nyx. How much does your mother-daughter relationship inform your writing? Is it ever awkward?

PC: Hmm...that's a good question. Kristin and I have a unique writing relationship. Actually, I probably wouldn't even consider writing with anyone else--it's unusually easy with my daughter (perhaps because I can beat her?). She and I have always been close, and we have a very honest relationship. Talking with each other has never been a problem, so we're used to communicating. That helps a lot in a co-author situation.

Regarding the mother-daughter relationships in the book: clearly Zoey's relationship with her own mom is nothing like Kristin and mine. Sadly, both of us have met many Linda Heffers here in Oklahoma, which is why she is so easy--and disturbing--for us to write. When I write Nyx's words I often think about how I feel about Kristin, and then try to expand that to how this goddess would view the vampyres, especially Zoey, as her children.

We get the awkward question often because of the sexual tension in the books. Kristin and I do discuss the temperature of the books and the specific situations a lot. It doesn't feel awkward between us because we're used to communicating, and because we don't just stick sex in our series to be gratuitous. The sexual issues are there because they're realistic to teenagers. Yes, Zoey has several boyfriends--often at the same time. But in six books she has had sex once, and that was because she was manipulated and used by a charismatic adult. It wasn't awkward writing those parts with my daughter--we believe in the reality of the books and the points we make about mistakes and consequences.

Amazon.com: Each of the books sort of has its own personality. Chosen, for example, was more focused on the friends and the guys, and Untamed was much more deeply focused on folklore and goddess rituals. Do you think that's influenced by each of your interests, with Kristin having more influence on one book and P.C. showing up more in another? Or is that just the natural arc of the story?

PC: I think the shifting emphasis is because of the natural arc of the story. Think about your own life. Doesn't your focus shift from time to time? I know mine does. Actually, sometimes it feels like events happen in waves: lots of guy, no guys, friend stres, no friend stress, crazy stuff at school, kinda calm school, etc. So I guess fiction is just mimicking the patterns I see in life.

Amazon.com: Even though it has a satisfying ending (no spoilers!) Hunted certainly doesn't seem like the end of Zoey's story. What's next?

PC: Zoey has to save the world! And it's definitely a big job. Seriously, now that the dark influences that have been lurking on the periphery of Zoey's world have been brought out into the open, it's time to deal with them. Of course that's a lot harder than "Okay, Z, kick their butts and save the world now!" sounds. Especially as there are many layers to the House of Night world and often good appears bad, and bad seems terribly attractive.

Horribly repetitive
By Mali
I have read the previous books in this series, and in the last one,I had started to get annoyed at Zoey's backwards maturing. Every decision she makes is stupider than the last. We thought Zoey had learned her lesson about hooking up with every single guy who showed her interest and realized she messed up a great thing with Eric. She starts out whining about how much she mises him and she's sorry for the mistakes she made. Not even a day later, she's hooking back up with her brainless human ex, who has all the charm of a drunken frat boy, and the maturity of a pre-teen. Cut to days later and she's hooking up with Stark again. If Loren were to come back from the dead and apologize to her for using her, I completely believe she's jump right back into his bed too. What is most seriously appalling, is that moments after getting back together with Eric, she coldheartedly goes back to Heath right in front of Eric, and expects them to understand that she has more important things to do than think about her feelings for them. Even worse, it's okay with them!
This was a seriously disappointing continuation that seems more like a desperate attempt to release a new book without any story to back it. Zoey has no morals and limited concern for anyone but herself.
In this book, they have finally escaped the House of Night only to return again with no plan..again because of Zoey's childish and selfish mistakes.
Frusterated, disgusted, and unable to read anymore about Zoey, I flipped to the back to the ending with the hope that MAYBE things change. They don't and she adds another man-slave to her collection of "my boys" as she calls them.
I am so glad I got this from the library, a little curious why there was no waiting list, but very relieved that I can literally throw this into the shoot and never see it again. I don't care if there is another attempt at continuing the series. I'm done.
There comes a time in book series, television series where there is just nowhere to go with it and it is ended or canceled. To the publishing company: please cancel this trainwreck.

Ugh. (But, if you've made it this far...)
By J. Simpson
I am fairly certain that this entire book was written on the back of several paper napkins on the bus ride to the publisher's...

More than half the book takes place in the tunnels and seems to consist mostly of filler babble. The most interesting thing that happens in the tunnels resulted from a risk that was very unlikely to have been taken, given the circumstances, so it seemed very convenient and gratuitous.

The book is chalk-full of bad writing, horrible editing errors (multiple cases of character confusion... saying Darius when they mean Damien, for example), and continuity errors. The Casts are so obsessed with trying to make these characters seem like "normal teenagers" that they come across seeming shallow and moronic. I mean, what teenager in their right mind is going to be thinking about what boy they want to kiss when the world as they know it is crumbling around them?

A fantastic example of the sloppy and embarrassing writing is when the writers devote an inordinate amount of time talking about the girls' cute purses, which they must be sure not to leave behind in the tunnels. Given the fact that in book four, the girls fled the HoN mid-ritual-circle and unable to break their hand holds as dangerous chaos erupted behind them, it seems unlikely anyone was worried about something as trivial as a freaking CUTE purse. Not to mention the fact that they would have had to have been holding their purses throughout the whole ritual in the first place, which also seems very unlikely (if not downright LAME).

The characters continue to be an unnerving mix of endearing and annoying qualities. The twins are still unbelievable cartoon characters, Zoey is still the self-conflicting love-obsessed-horny-but-I-don't-wanna-be-a-ho she was in the other books, and Hunted comes with the added bonus of a really embarassingly racist portrayal of an African-American girl who is the polar opposite of Shaunee.

As the icing on the cake comes from the return of the love triangle. If you weren't already sick and tired of Zoey's constantly shifting and conflicting affection, you will be very tired of it after this book. And, just like in Marked, Heath-- despite his earlier and rather vehement rejection of Zoey, makes a mind-numbingly unlikely and painfully gratuitous re-appearance which will leave you wanting to rip your book in two.

BUT... having said that...

If you've made it through the first four books, you might as well keep going and read this one, too. As with the first four books, despite how earth-shatteringly bad the writing is, you can wade through all of the embarassing and poorly written crap and somewhere beneath you'll find the makings of interesting and endearing characters, and a compelling plot.

It'd be kind of like rummaging through a dump... it's trashy, smelly, embarassing, and downright awful, but somewhere beneath all the garbage there are little treasures waiting to be discovered. It takes a lot of work, and for most people it's not worth it, but if you can stomach it you might find something worth keeping.

Oh, to go back in time and encourage the publisher to hire a GOOD writer to write this series. If they had, they might have really had a true gem and a rival for Twilight on their hands.

Bad book in an inconsistent series
By Karissa Eckert
This is the fifth book in the House of Night series; all in all this series has been very inconsistent. The third book was kind of ho-hum, the fourth book was excellent, and the fifth book, well, it kind of sucked.

In this book Zoey and friends are hiding in the tunnels with Stevie Rae and her red fledglings. Somehow they need to get back into the House of Night to face Neferet and Kalona and somehow break the influence they are having on the vampires and fledglings of the House of Night.

The above is basically the whole story. Sadly the first 2/3's of the story are spent in the tunnels with not a whole lot happening. Zoey spends a lot of time whining about Erik being too possessive. Then, of course, Zoey has to get involved with Heath...again. And because Zoey wouldn't have enough to whine about without being involved in a love triangle, Stark is drug into the picture too. This story felt like it was almost a repeat of the third book; at least in the relationship aspects. Seriously nothing exciting actually happens until the last section of the book. This section was pretty good and dealt with Zoey and friends going back to the House of Night and facing Neferet and Kalona.

This has been a very inconsistent series for me. Some of the books I love and some I hate. I feel that there has been more hate than love for this series for me. There are so many interesting things that could be happening with these characters and this world; it seems though that the majority of page space islent to Zoey so she can whine about relationship troubles. All of her whining makes me think that maybe she is not the special Priestess that everyone thinks she is; I mean she is one of the weakest heroines I have ever read about.

I had a tough time getting through this book. I am finding that I don't really care about many of the characters all that much. The plot wasn't very exciting or griping. Believe it or not I though Aphrodite was my favorite character of this book; her actions are much more heroic than any of the others. I am not sure I will read the 6th book. My overall reaction when I finished this book was, "Thank goodness I am done, I can read something good now!"

Sorry this is such a scalding review, but I am sooo disappointed that this series can't be more consistent!
