Looking for Anne of Green Gables: The Story of L. M. Montgomery and Her Literary Classic, by Irene Gammel

In June 1908, a red-haired orphan appeared on to the streets of Boston and a modern legend was born. That little girl was Anne Shirley, better known as Anne of Green Gables, and her first appearance was in a book that has sold more than 50 million copies worldwide and been translated into more than 35 languages (including Braille). The author who created her was Lucy Maud Montgomery, a writer who revealed very little of herself and her method of crafting a story. On the centenary of its publication, Irene Gammel tells the braided story of both Anne and Maud and, in so doing, shows how a literary classic was born. Montgomery's own life began in the rural Cavendish family farmhouse on Prince Edward Island, the place that became the inspiration for Green Gables. Mailmen brought the world to the farmhouse's kitchen door in the form of American mass market periodicals sparking the young Maud's imagination. From the vantage point of her small world, Montgomery pored over these magazines, gleaning bits of information about how to dress, how to behave and how a proper young lady should grow. She began to write, learning how to craft marketable stories from the magazines' popular fiction; at the same time the fashion photos inspired her visual imagination. One photo that especially intrigued her was that of a young woman named Evelyn Nesbit, the model for painters and photographers and lover of Stanford White. That photo was the spark for what became Anne Shirley. Blending biography with cultural history, Looking for Anne of Green Gables is a gold mine for fans of the novels and answers a trunk load of questions: Where did Anne get the "e" at the end of her name? How did Montgomery decide to give her red hair? How did Montgomery's courtship and marriage to Reverend Ewan Macdonald affect the story? Irene Gammel's dual biography of Anne Shirley and the woman who created her will delight the millions who have loved the red haired orphan ever since she took her first step inside the gate of Green Gables farm in Avonlea.

From Booklist
The 100th anniversary of the publication of the still-popular Anne of Green Gables (50 million copies sold to date) is being greeted by a flurry of activity, including a new edition of the novel; a prequel, Before Green Gables (2008), written by Canadian Budge Wilson; and, now, this new biography of Anne’s creator and alterego, Lucy Maude Montgomery. Gammel, a Canadian academic and editor of several earlier collections of Anne-related essays, is clearly a fan, and, frankly, her prodigiously researched and breathlessly written study will have its primary appeal to other fans. Her revelations “for the first time” of the inspirations for Anne’s face and the character itself provide persuasive answers to some lingering questions about the genesis of the fiery redhead. But they will be of interest principally to what Margaret Atwood has tartly called “The Annery.” General readers will be interested, however, in Gammel’s careful deconstruction of the context—early-twentieth-century popular culture—for Anne’s creation and the complex personality of the woman who found refuge from her own unhappy life in the creation of Anne and her beloved Avonlea. --Michael Cart

Review

“Interesting and well-researched.” ―The New York Times

“Drawing on a vast array of neglected and unknown sources, this groundbreaking study establishes new connections between Montgomery's isolated life in Cavendish, P.E.I., and the metropolitan existence that she consumed vicariously through magazines published in New York, Boston and Philadelphia. Looking for Anne is a highly readable, top-rate study that [provides] a new spin on Montgomery's text.” ―Globe and Mail

“Rather than simply rehashing available material, Ryerson professor and noted literary researcher Irene Gammel … explores the social and literary influences that guided and inspired Montgomery in creating her impetuous heroine. … Even more fascinating is the amount of inspiration Montgomery found in the myriad of current magazines and journals that made their way into her hands via the desk of her grandmother the town postmistress. ” ―Quill and Quire

“Looking for Anne is a fascinating and wonderful book. It brings forward an amazing wealth of new information, filling in many gaps (some of which I didn't even know existed!), and is presented in a captivating narrative that is very well organized and a great read. The research is fabulous…. It's rather like the Road to Xanadu.” ―Carole Gerson, Simon Fraser University and co-editor of History of the Book in Canada

“... The material is incredible, the interpretive work unsurpassable. ” ―Holly Virginia Blackford, Rutgers University-Camden.

Review

“To celebrate Anne’s centennial, there are two new reissues of the original book, yearlong celebrations on Prince Edward Island (where the story is set) and, for those who can’t get enough, two prequels?. Perhaps the most interesting addition, however, is Irene Gammel’s Looking for Anne, a well researched ? dual biography of Anne and her creator.”?New York Times “Drawing on a vast array of neglected and unknown sources, this groundbreaking study establishes new connections between Montgomery’s isolated life in Cavendish, PEI, and the metropolitan existence that she consumed vicariously through magazines published in New York, Boston and Philadelphia?. Looking for Anne is a highly readable, top-rate study that will provide a new spin on Montgomery’s text.”?The Globe and Mail “By combining detailed passages from Montgomery’s journals?as well as photos and letters written to and from her?with small sections of original prose, Gammel casts Maud as a character in her own biography. With this unique blending of researched information and descriptive, literary passages, Gammel has made what could have been very dry material engaging to scholars and general readers alike.”?Quill & Quire “Very accessible yet meticulously researched and annotated, Looking for Anne delves into the ‘perfect storm of inspiration’ for this enduring 100-year-old Canadian classic.”?Ursula Fuchs, Winnipeg Free Press “Gammel’s book uncovers for the first time the multi-layer quality of Anne? the book gives a frank and uncensored portrait of a woman who was literally born before her time.”?Mary MacKay, The Guardian

The definitive study of how Anne of Green Gables came about.
By Nancy Smith
I recently made a trip to Prince Edward Island and picked up a number of books related to L.M. Montgomery and Anne of Green Gables. I actually had passed on this one because I saw that Amazon had such a fantastic price on it. Anyway, as an Anne of Green Gables and L.M. Montgomery junkie, I've read practically every book on Maud and her work and this one is by far the best. The research in this book is positively amazing. Kudos to the author for digging so deeply and for taking the time to be so complete and thorough. However, I don't want people to think that this is some dry scholarly book, on the contrary, it is almost impossible to put down. Not only does the author dig up facts, she analyzes them with exceptional insight and brillance. She knows her subjects backwards and forwards. At times during the book, one could almost sense the presence of Maud Montgomery herself. It is as though she whispered her secrets to the author who then revealed them to us the readers. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves Anne or Maud. It is as close as a book can come to being perfect.

Picked it up by chance, Can't put it down
By JMD
I read the Anne of GG books as a girl and watched the PBS movies countless times, but I'm not an Anne fanatic. For example, I've never visited PEI. :) I also don't really like to read biographies. I saw the book at my library and picked it up out of curiosity. So I'm not the typical reviewer of this book...

But I can't put it down! It reads like a mystery about how Maud was inspired to write Anne. It also has reflective commentary on the themes in the Anne books, which is interesting to think about in terms of what Anne meant to me while I was her age. And the reliance on Maud's diaries for piecing together history is intriguing to me, as someone who has sporadically kept diaries.

Overall, I am thoroughly enjoying the book -- it is my guilty pleasure every day.

A Biography of the Book, not the Person
By Cherie Miller
I was disappointed by two aspects of this book. The first was the dramatic style of writing by the author. Just write, we get it.

The second was that I expected a biography of Lucy Maud Montgomery's life, but I really didn't get a sense of who she was. This book ends near the publication date of "Anne," so I don't know anything about Maud's marriage, move west, birth of her 2 sons (I don't even know their names!), and when she and her husband die.

This is more of a scholarly look at the life of the book, instead of it's creator, so I was disappointed in that. There are also some allusions to lesbianism, but they're unfounded. No facts are brought to bear on that allegation. It just seems too "fashionable" to publish some "dirt" on this pastor's wife. It's speculation - looking back on 100 years of history - and I didn't like it. (The same thing was said when the author alludes that Hans Christian Anderson was a homosexual.) If you're going to make such statements, at least provide me with FACTS, not speculation. It's tawdry.

Excerpt
Low moods, low energy, headaches, upset stomach, sleep problems, overeating, heavy drinking... we all have our patterns for responding to the stress and strain of busy schedules and lives. One person may be creative, energetic, and productive for much of the year, yet sag through most of the winter, overeating and oversleeping, like a hibernating bear or a dormant plant. Another may have daily ebbs of energy and mood that can be relieved with a fast-food fix. Someone else may cope well with work and family pressures throughout the week, then get blinding migraines as soon as the weekend comes around.
For most, these mood and energy swings and stress-response patterns aren’t disabling or disturbing enough to send us to a doctor or counselor for help. We may see them as inevitable, as just the way we are. Or as an inescapable by-product of high-pressure jobs and family responsibilities. In fact, these chronic, stress-induced problems can be minimized or even eliminated by relatively simple changes in how you eat, exercise, and organize your day.
Have you ever noticed how often these common complaints seem to be linked? A low or anxious mood is almost always accompanied by changes in eating and sleeping patterns. Stress or changes in your eating and sleeping schedule can trigger a headache. Sometimes it isn’t stress but the calendar, the weather, or the time of day that brings a sudden shift in energy, spirits, and motivation. Vast numbers of people hit their lows in the early morning or late afternoon, on cloudy days, during much of the winter, or, for women, during premenstrual days.
Although stress, weather, and season can all bring on a low mood, a headache, or an eating binge, the ultimate cause is internal and chemical. An essential natural substance called serotonin is one of the body’s most powerful modulators of mood, appetite, sleep, and pain awareness. It is produced in the brains and nervous systems of humans and animals from specific nutrients in the foods we eat. Avoidable fluctuations in its availability to the brain can bring on depression, anxiety, binge eating, insomnia, headaches, and a host of other common everyday problems.
Many mood-enhancing drugs, from the antidepressant Prozac to the abused drug Ecstasy (MDMA), achieve their effects by increasing the brain’s supply of serotonin. You can take nutrition and lifestyle steps to enhance your serotonin supply without drugs to get your mood, appetite, energy, and headache problems under control. You don’t need to run ten miles a day or live on raw vegetables and skim milk. This is not a case of “the cure is worse than the disease.” You can learn how to ward off your mood and energy lows by scheduling your meals and snacks and choosing mood-enhancing foods. Relaxing, low-impact exercise (for example, walking or cycling) can also help control or avoid stress reactions, such as anxiety and binge eating.
Interested? Read on! The first step is understanding why moods go up and down, and why negative moods so often bring on troubling changes in your sleeping and eating habits.Copyright © 1996, 2008 by Lynn Sonberg Book Associates.

A lifesaver for me!
By A Customer
I had suffered from depression for more than 25 years, off and on, and finally I was put on anti-depressants. I hated the side effects and eventually had to quit the meds. I came across this book, just a small mass produced paperback book and the information, although simple has changed my life. I no longer have mood swings, dark brooding periods or headaches. The author takes a lot of time to explain the physiology behind it all. If the science is too much for the reader than he/she can just get to the nitty gritty of it all. The method she proposes is simple for anyone to follow. My husband was very skeptical about a book changing one's life but I had no choice but to give a chance. I'm forever grateful to the author for writing this book. My family has a wife and mother now who isn't a Jekyll and Hyde show.

One of the Best Books of Its Kind

The scientific explanations are crystal clear, the advice thoughtful and lucid, and the writing exemplary. This is an excellent book about the mysterious chemistry of the brain and how naturally to enhance your levels of serotonin.

Bingo
By paganesque
This is the book I had been looking for. Reasonably healthy and active, I cook and eat almost every meal at home, favoring whole ingredients and little that is processed. I have always loved whole grains, especially wheat. Yet in the wake of the Atkins diet and other carb-averse, high-protein plans, for several years I have tried to minimize carbs. Meanwhile my weight has yo-yoed, I have felt deeply undernourished and hungry, and my mood plummeted (thanks also to some very hard knocks).

As soon as I saw this book on a friend's shelf, I borrowed it, and began following the advice to begin breakfast with all carbs (fruit and grain), no milk in the coffee. (Before eating I also take 100mg 5-HTP and 50mg B-6, which are said to boost serotonin, as per Rick Hanson's "Buddha's Brain.) Then a snack with carbs, fruit, or small amount of protein, high-carb lunch (soup is good), and dinner with small amount of protein, grains, and veg.

The author explains the metabolic processes whereby serotonin production in the brain is actually suppressed by high protein foods, while the smaller amounts of protein in grains (even pretzels) are better assimilated.

I felt immediately better after making this switch. It's been a week and my enormous appetite (partly from bicycling) has begun to moderate. The late-morning and late-afternoon crashes have not occurred this week. Food tastes better and I am more satisfied with what I do eat. No weight loss this week, but I expect that if my urges to pig out subside, it will come.

I make sure to keep a cooked grain in the fridge, homemade applesauce, soups, whole-grain muffins. These things can be made quickly, and the grains (and beans) and muffins can be frozen for later in the week. (Grains and beans should be consumed within about three days of cooking.)

If you want more dietary detail on the high-carb plan, plus several hundred recipes (including meat), check out Jane Brody's "The Good Food Book" from 1986. It had been languishing on my shelf, but now is front and center -- along with Mark Bittman's "How to Cook Everything Vegetarian." Another cookbook I like, with filling and tasty recipes beyond the usual, is "The New Vegetarian Cuisine" by Linda Rosensweig.

Brody writes that animal products should be used as a "condiment" rather than main focus of meal. In his columns, Bittman is also ecumenical about this. Personally I am about 80% veg these days, and doubt I can ever give up bleu cheese, eggs and butter. But reports like last week's NYTimes article about the treatment of food research animals, and Harper Magazine's "Cage Wars: A Visit to the Egg Farm," turn my stomach, and give me more reason to eat more of what I really love: WHOLE GRAINS.

Two shelves in my pantry hold airtight jars of brown rice, millet, hulled barley (NOT pearl; this is meatier and more nutritious), buckwheat (not actually wheat), quinoa and popcorn, plus red, white and black beans, chickpeas, lentils and peas; and cornmeal, buckwheat flour, whole wheat flour, and wheat bran. And of course cocoa powder. Wheat germ in the fridge. That's a lot to choose from, and keeps for a long time, though obviously tastes better if relatively fresh.

I do use some sugar, honey and corn syrup; molasses is tastier and more nutritious but not always appropriate. Brody advises cutting by half the sugar content of recipes calling for it. I usually cut the sugar by at least a third (some recipes don't hold together with less). She is right that after cutting back, packaged treats and many home recipes taste just too sweet. But I still can't keep chocolate bars at home, because I will eat them all at once. Some things do not change.

Update 6/2016: I have had to readjust this diet since I ended up eating too many refined carbs and sweets, my bad. It seems craving for these things, along with poor sleep, are signs of protein deficiency. And I work a physically demanding job that needs high calorie intake for breakfast and lunch. So I am now eating 3-4 oz of dense protein at each meal, along with more fruits and vegetables. This has cut the craving. I still love my grains but I need to plan better for them. Am eating 1-2 portions a day instead of relying on them entirely.

Note that protein consists of amino acids that are used to build all the chemical transmitters used by the brain. So if you are deficient in any of them, you can be short circuiting them. One needs to combine plant foods correctly to get the right balance, as I failed to do so far. I have read that whey protein contains complete amino acids, so I've been boosting a meal or two with a scoop of it. (And I actually like the taste of the plain unsweetened "designer whey" from Vitamin Shoppe.)

“This widely expanded update to the original 2004 edition defines nearly every facet of contemporary life--from arts, grammar, mythology and culture to science, economics, and geopolitical issues. Though bearing an authority and informational wealth that might rival the voluminous Oxford Dictionary of English, this surprisingly manageable volume is organized alphabetically by subject and contains thousands of highly accessible essays, tables, and lists, all composed by New York Times field experts. It also includes an introduction by longtime "On Language" columnist and Pultizer Prize winner William Safire. An essential background referenec for almost every subject: highly recommended for all public libraries.” ―Library Journal

“I wish I'd had this book 25 years ago. It is certain to become an indispensable tool for fact fanatics.” ―Bill Bryson, author of A Short History of Nearly Everything

“In short, this is the largest, most up-to-date and affordable one volume desk reference available today and is an absolute must for every home, dorm room and library.” ―Tucson Citizen

Fun and even useful book
By magellan
The problem with a book like this is the difficult tradeoff between completeness and brevity, and accessibility. Obviously in a one volume format, no matter how weighty (and this one is 1300 pages), something has to be left out. But it's a problem that this book handles quite well.

Rather than carp on what's missing in a book like this, like some of the reviews here, look at what's included instead, and there's plenty to keep you occupied there, no matter what your interests are. If you're interested in more complete coverage, my advice there is to buy one of the one or two volume encyclopedias, such as the Oxford Concise Encyclopedia from Oxford University Press or the Britannica Ready Reference. These are even more ponderous and complete but are less approachable and readable since the technical level is higher.

So don't be too critical of a volume like this, which attempts to steer a middle ground. It's still an enjoyable read, and worth your time and money. Also, I say this as someone who regularly reads both the short and long versions of several 'pedias and knows their pros and cons. For me this is something I would use as enjoyable bedtime reading when I don't have the stamina or attention span to brave another formidable Britannica article, or even The World Book, which traditionally was somewhat more readable, although the Britannica has resolved that issue now with the three levels of writing difficulty in the new electronic DVD version.

But getting back to the present volume, overall, a nice job and informative and enjoyable to read.

Good collection of information, yet nothing unique
By Self Helper
In response to the previous post: I would not feel alarmed about the missing information. I am certain hundreds of people were contributing to book. An omission in the history department would not likely affect other sections. One book will never be able to capture everything considered "essential". Essential for an American is not essential for, say, a European. No single book will make you "essentially informed".

I found the depth of this knowledge to be just right, though. I don't care to shine on Jeopardy. My goal is to become aware without getting too deeply into it unless I am really passionate about a particular subject.

Sure, some stuff is missing, but, what is there is PLENTY. For example: we all heard about Sunni and Shiites Islaam, but I doubt many, including, and especially, George Bush know the difference. How many of Seven Wonders of the World can you name? Do you know who Pygmalion was? Did you know television was invented in 1927? Did you know that America has the highest rate of STD's of all industrial nations? Do you know why? Do you care? If the examples did not evoke some sort of curiosity, this book, in all likelihood, will seem useless to you. But if you found that your brain lit up with tingly wonder, this book would probably be a good place to start.

On the negative side, truthfully, there is nothing unique or incredible about this book that sets it apart from others, maybe a little heavier. It's just like any other almanacs published every year by New York Times. It's just another information-filled book, not better or worse....

This book has over 1300 pages without a single illustration, and of course, is basic, but don't let it fool you, you can still find something new that can send you to the library or the web to satisfy your curiosity. If you are an average American, (not a geek, who probably already knows all this stuff anyway), if you are curious about the world you live in, and would like not to appear dumb when others discuss world's events at a party, you will surely find something fascinating about this "everyday" stuff. Something you probably had heard mentioned as recently as today without really realizing how little you knew about the subject in point. Each category contains 10-15 pages. Topics: Philosophy, Psychology, Broadway, Geology, Geography, Earth Science, History, World Wars, Music, Political Science, pop culture, world events and so on...

My New Year's resolution: one section a week.

Great Source For Information
By Joseph A. Guarise
The essential book of knowlege is an easy reference book and jam backed with useful information. It can answer those quirky questions that you forgot the answers to quickly and easily. When was the last time you read the Declaration of Independence? What are those wine regions in France? How do I correctly punctuate this sentence? Faster than the internet.

Busy Body: An Agatha Raisin Mystery (Agatha Raisin Mysteries), by M. C. Beaton

Agatha Raisin has always been ambivalent about holiday cheer, but her cozy little village of Carsely has long prided itself on its Christmas festivities. But this year Mr. John Sunday, a selfimportant officer with the Health and Safety Board, has ruled that the traditional tree on top of the church is a public menace; that lampposts are unsafe for hanging illuminations; that May Dimwoody’s homemade toys are dangerous for children… Things have reached such a desperate pass that the Carsely Ladies’ Society joins forces with the ladies in the neighboring village of Odley Cruesis to try to put a stop to Mr. Sunday’s meddling—only to find that someone has literally put a stop to him with a kitchen knife.

Agatha’s detective agency is on the case, but when a man has made as many enemies as John Sunday, it’s hard to know where to start…

Starred Review. In bestseller Beaton's terrific 21st Agatha Raisin mystery (after 2009's There Goes the Bride), the fiercely formidable private detective and her perky young protégé, Toni Gilmour, look into the stabbing murder of John "Grudge" Sunday, a Mircester health and safety board officer, outside a joint meeting of two Cotswolds ladies' societies. The unpopular Sunday had put a pall on the holidays by stopping the annual custom of erecting a Christmas tree atop the Carsely church tower. Millionaire and prime suspect Miriam Courtney, who threatened to kill Sunday, hires Agatha to clear her name. Complications ensue after someone strikes Miriam a fatal blow to the head. Beaton, the pen name for Marion Chesney, does a brilliant job of depicting Agatha's struggles with aging and keeping her detective agency afloat. Her romantic upheavals (will she ever marry close friend Sir Charles Fraith?) continue to tantalize.

From the Back Cover

This Christmas, be careful what you wish for…

Cranky yet lovable Agatha Raisin has always been ambivalent about holiday cheer, though her cozy village of Carsely has long prided itself on its Christmas festivities. Until now. This year, local Health and Safety Board officer John Sunday is threatening to undo some of Carsley’s most time-honored traditions. The tree on top of the church? A public menace. The decorations hanging on the lampposts? Hazardous. Even May Dimwoody’s homemade toys are deemed unsafe for the children. Bah humbug! The Carsely Ladies Society is in an uproar and will do anything to put a stop to this Scrooge—only to find that someone else has done it for them…with a kitchen knife. Soon Agatha’s detective agency is on the case. But when a man has made as many enemies as Mr. John Sunday, it’s hard to know where to start—or how to stop the killer from striking again.

“Beaton does a brilliant job…Agatha’s struggles…continue to tantalize.”
—Publishers Weekly (starred review)

Agatha scores again with a cunning mix of satire and mystery.”—Kirkus Reviews

Delightful Mystery Frolic With Agatha
By Tomasina
M. C. Beaton is a wonderfully creative and prolific writer. The old Aggie is back in her latest book Busy Body. There are so many twists and turns that I had a hard time putting it down. A very engaging book. I disagree with one of the reviewers who said there were too many characters and it was confusing. That is one thing I love about most British mysteries, like Inspector Lewis and Morse, they are intricate and that keeps the story exciting. Of course, Beaton, throws in that touch of humor that makes all of us love Agatha and her escapades. I've come to love Beaton's cast of returning characters --- the wise and ever dependable Mrs. Bloxby; stingy but charming Sir Charles; flamboyant and flaky Roy Silver, and the list goes on. Now I'm left longing for Beaton's next Agatha Raisin mystery. Guess I'll have to wait another year. As Agatha would say, "Snakes and bastards!" Ms. Beaton, please keep writing those wonderful Agatha Raisin books.

Reads like a contractual obligation book
By M2
M.C. Beaton has been proclaimed the new Agatha Christie, and there is some merit to that, particularly in her earlier work. Of late, though, the well seems to be, if not running dry, whirling around and around like an eddy. "Busy Body" starring the redoubtable Agatha Raisin soars off in every direction and rapidly spins out of control. It reads less like a novel than three or four novellas carelessly pasted together. Characters come, characters go, characters get killed (even a hero); some characters pop up out of nowhere, others vanish without a trace, some are no more than extras; there is some country hopping, and an awful lot of time seems to pass over the course of the book. Potentially intriguing subplots are introduced and then left hanging (presumably for a future book), as though the author just didn't want to take the time to let them play out. Despite all this activity, none of the characters are particularly well drawn, even Agatha herself (if you don't already know what makes her tick from earlier books, she will be pretty enigmatic here). The denouement of one of the central murders is shockingly thrown away in "oh-by-the-way-I-heard-this-is-who-did-it" fashion. While an awful lot happens over the course of 278 pages, none of it gels into a cohesive story. For Beaton's fans, the book has to count as a disappointment, and those for whom "Busy Body" is their introduction to Beaton will no doubt wonder what all the shouting is about.

From Publishers Weekly
Connell, an attorney and Marian authority, calls on readers to listen to Mary in a book that combines reports of apparitions with Catholic teaching and some history of devotion to the mother of Christ. The bookhas an apocalyptic feel, based largely on the content of recent Marian messages. Connell also opens with talk of the biblical end times, going on to suggest that Mary's appearances to people of diverse cultures and beliefs in this generation are unprecedented. The author writes devoutly of Mary and her own relationship with the Madonna, incorporating such personal experiences as her interview with two young men who witnessed an apparition of Mary in Oliveto Citro, Italy, in 1989. The text is thoroughly referenced, though the author does not indicate the source of what appear to be messages from Mary and God at the conclusions of chapters. Some also are in other places, but always without a footnote. This may leave readers wondering whether Connell received them herself or simply wrote them based on her knowledge of other Marian messages. Those who share the author's devotion to Mary will most appreciate Connell's work, but her book also serves as a good introduction to Mary for the merely curious. (Oct.)

A life-changing treasure
By Frederick J. Francis
This spiritually beautiful book is a life-changing treasure. I am amazed at it's marvelous stories of Mary's power in the world. This highly documented, easy to read book (that I received as a gift) gently reveals Mary as our personal spiritual mother and mentor. It has wonderful examples of famous, and also ordinary people who have been influenced by her miraculous actions in the world. I appreciate the consoling spiritual intimacy contained in the book's surprising poetry that seems to speak in a heavenly voice. The Secrets of Mary: Gifts from the Blessed Mother is a comforting light.

Secrets of Mary, by Janice Connell
By Seahurst
The Secrets of Mary is the finest book on Mary that I have ever read. I have given it as gifts to several. It is not a book
that you will read fast and put down, but will refer from time to time to the relationships our saints have had with
Mary through the ages. Thank you Janice Connell for another wonderful book. You have been truly inspired and I
appreciate that.
