Doomsday Men: The Real Dr. Strangelove and the Dream of the Superweapon, by P. D. Smith

This is the gripping, untold story of the doomsday bomb—the ultimate weapon of mass destruction. In 1950, Hungarian-born scientist Leo Szilard made a dramatic announcement on American radio: science was on the verge of creating a doomsday bomb. For the first time in history, mankind realized that he had within his grasp a truly God-like power, the ability to destroy life itself. The shockwave from this statement reverberated across the following decade and beyond.

If detonated, Szilard's doomsday device—a huge cobalt-clad H-bomb—would pollute the atmosphere with radioactivity and end all life on earth. The scientific creators of such apocalyptic weapons had transformed the laws of nature into instruments of mass destruction and for many people in the Cold War there was little to distinguish real scientists from that “fictional master of megadeath,” Stanley Kubrick’s Dr. Strangelove. Indeed, as PD Smith’s chilling account shows, the dream of the superweapon begins in popular culture. This is a story that cannot be told without the iconic films and fictions that portray our deadly fascination with superweapons, from H.G. Wells’ The War of the Worlds to Nevil Shute’s On the Beach and Kubrick’s Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb.

Although scientists admitted it was possible to build the cobalt bomb, no superpower would admit to having created one. However, it remained a terrifying possibility, striking fear into the hearts of people around the world. The story of the cobalt bomb is an unwritten chapter of the Cold War, but now PD Smith reveals the personalities behind this feared technology and shows how the scientists responsible for the twentieth century’s most terrible weapons grew up in a culture dreaming of superweapons and Wellsian utopias. He argues that, in the end, the doomsday machine became the ultimate symbol of humanity’s deepest fears about the science of destruction.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. Weaving together biography, science and art, Smith has created a compelling history of physics in the 20th century, focusing on the long-lasting search for ever more destructive weapons-from the development of chemical warfare in World War I Germany through the arms race of the Cold War. Explaining "why some of the most gifted and idealistic men of the twentieth century spent so much effort trying to destroy the planet," Smith's dynamic, riveting narrative reveals details of people, places and events that are rarely covered in textbooks, bringing to life not just scientists like Robert Oppenheimer and Leo Szilard, but the horrors of chemical and atomic warfare. Time and again, "it seemed that a giant leap forward for science also meant a step backward for mankind," and contemporary film and fiction echoed this sentiment with "clear signs... of genuine resentment towards scientists for betraying the high ideals of their profession and, indeed, the best interests of humanity." Ironically, the goal of many of these scientists was peace, not war: "Many scientists were convinced that the terrible reality of atomic superweapons would force nations to resolve their disputes and work for world peace." Captivating and thoroughly referenced, this chronicle should interest a wide audience, from science and history buffs to armchair politicos.

Review

“An impassioned account of everything from the discovery of radioactivity to plans for a Doomsday Device (yes, there really were such plans) from an author who feels that to the generations growing up who see the Cold War only as something in history books, the true horror of nuclear weapons has been forgotten... Doomsday Men is ... important, and, depressingly, there is a need for it – people, [especially younger people than me,] ought to read it”. – John Gribbin, The Literary Review

"Superb… The research is impressive, but it’s his eye for revealing anecdotes and his ability to distil it all into lively prose that makes this a real pleasure to read." - Sunday Business Post

“Doomsday Men doesn’t just deal with thermonuclear destruction. It’s a meticulous account of weapons of mass destruction and the science and scientists behind them. Indeed, it is two books for the price of one, because it is also a cultural disquisition. Smith scours fiction for visions of death rays and lurid imaginings of Armageddon to show how writers often preceded or influenced scientists. … always readable and entertaining … Smith deserves some sort of award for value for money”. – Tibor Fischer, Daily Telegraph

"...he puts the nuclear age into a new context, engagingly and even excitingly". - Financial Times

"Smith entertainingly takes on Dr. Doom and his colleagues, setting them in popular culture as scientific messiahs and madmen." – Times (London)

"A chillingly compelling history of chemical, biological and atomic superweapons...Doomsday Men analyzes dozens of examples of how culture influenced science in the devising of superweapons...it successfully shows how and why superweapons have been simultaneously admired and reviled by both scientists and the public". - Physics World

“Told largely from the viewpoint of the scientists devoted to turning the military’s demands into reality, PD Smith’s account is packed with striking anecdotes… this is a readable, informative work exploring why intelligent men worked on such insane projects”. - Metro

“Smith’s study is the gripping, untold story of the ultimate weapon of mass destruction, which first came to public attention in 1950 when the Hungarian-born scientist Leo Szilard made a dramatic announcement on radio: science was on the verge of creating a Doomsday Bomb. For the first time in history, mankind would soon have the ability to destroy all life on the planet. The shockwave from this statement reverberated across the following decade and beyond.” - Times Literary Supplement

“… Doomsday Men is well worth reading. It is a powerful reminder that weapons of mass destruction are still ‘out there’ and new ones are being developed every day. But it is not solely about scientific knowledge; it ranges much wider than science fiction. It tells the story of disaster. One question is left hanging: will we allow our governments to repeat the mistakes of the last century?”- Independent

An outstanding history of the cultural impact of superweapons
By Paul Halpern
Doomsday Men is an impressively creative examination of how literature and philosophy influenced the development of superweapons, and how knowledge of their ghastly potential shaped, in turn, the cultural icons of the 20th century. It shows how those involved in the Manhattan Project differed greatly in their temperments and outlooks, and reached drastically different conclusions about the role of nuclear weapons after the Second World War was over. While some scientists, such as Leo Szilard, rallied for arms control, others, such as Herman Kahn, argued that the west should be prepared to accept massive casualties. Kahn's remarks, taken to their terrifying extreme, were incorporated into Kubrick's classic dark comedy, Dr. Strangelove, a film that occupies a central place in this book. Through colorful anecdotes and fascinating connections with popular culture, Smith helps bring the turbulent history of those frightening times to life. Doomsday Men offers a vital and intruging account of the mentality and culture of the Cold War.

"Out of the libraries come the killers." - - Bertolt Brecht, "1940"
By Found Highways
In Brecht's "1940," the "latest inventions of the professors" probably didn't include the atomic bomb. Poison gas and rockets meant to kill civilians were horrific enough. But one of the surprising things (to me, at least) that P. D. Smith's Doomsday Men shows is how newspapers and popular science writing in Europe and America described atomic bombs and atomic power plants in detail decades before Hiroshima.

Another interesting thing in Doomsday Men is how fiction writers and scientists inspired each other. Roentgen discovered X-rays in 1895 and the next year H. G. Wells used "Roentgen vibrations" as the rationale for the Invisible Man's experiments. (Wells was the first to use the expression "atomic bomb.")

American science fiction magazines published stories about atomic energy years before Pearl Harbor.

In Germany Zukunftsromane ("future novels") and Weltuntergangsromane ("end-of-the-world stories") were popular. These stories influenced German rocket scientist Wernher von Braun and Hungarian physicists Leo Szilard and Edward Teller, two of the "Hungarian Quartet" that Doomsday Men is primarily about. Most of the best nuclear scientists in Berlin were Jewish and left Germany in the 1930s for Britain or the United States.

Fritz Haber, was an ultra-patriotic German-Jewish scientist who developed poison gas during World War I without any qualms. (After the Nazis took power, when Haber was a refuge in England, Ernest Rutherford refused to meet Haber, saying " 'he did not want to shake hands with the inventor of poison gas warfare.' ") Many of Haber's family were killed by Zyklon B gas at Auschwitz.

As the truth about the effects of atomic bombs and atomic testing became known, a new kind of story replaced the old pro-technology-at-any-cost stories in American science fiction magazines (where you rarely read about a Faust or a Frankenstein). Actually, it was a return to an older type of story.

Movies like Godzilla, Them!, The Amazing Colossal Man, and The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms were a return to the "deadly utopian dream" of turn-of-the-century fiction like H. G. Wells's The World Set Free or The War of the Worlds.

By the time of the modern era of ICBMs and hotlines, the tragic figure of Goethe's Faust had become Stanley Kubrick's Dr. Strangelove, an amalgam of von Braun, Edward Teller, and others, who could only be comprehended as a joke, even though the joke was we're doomed.

Completely captivating
By Twilight Princess
Completely captivating from the first page, this book never ceases to surprise and enchant. A picturesque stroll through the interwoven history of science and fiction, I learned a lot about both while being thoroughly entertained. The cross-pollination between imagination and science has been more fruitful than I knew, and I definitely view the world differently since reading this book.

Old enough to have done bomb drills in my early school days, but too young to have taken them very seriously, fear of nuclear annihilation was only on the outer fringes of my consciousness. I wonder what it would have been like to grow up entirely without such fear? I didn't know that fear of superweapons has been with us for far longer than the Cold War -- for about a century, in fact. P.D. Smith made me think about the important role this fear has played socially, politically, economically and culturally. I cannot overstate how highly I recommend this book to anyone - it is not just for geeks.

Like all the best books, Doomsday Men is best devoured whole and then gone back over to be savoured slowly -- the pleasure goes on long after the first reading. Not simply a history book, it is filled with thought-provoking parallels that are entirely relevant for today. A deadly serious subject is treated with erudition and rare charm. I cannot recall any other time when my ignorance was so delightfully dispelled.

Excellent Composition Reader!
By surrena g
I instruct a first year composition class at a northeastern university. I have tried several other readers--including Outlook and Insights, Models for Writers, and Ten on Ten. While I think those books are full of good content, none is as carefully structured and presented as Reading Critically, Writing Well.
From the very first page, it presents important information clearly and concisely. Beginning with examples of autobiographical writing and ending, predictably, with information on research strategies and documentation, it is perfect for a first year composition student whose primary goals is to learn the most effective and evocative techniques for expository writing.
I love the way each segment ends with ideas and strategies to drive home the main topic of that section. Each chapter concludes with an emphasis on the necessary skills of editing and proofreading. While this might seem gratuitous, this repetition is very effective in raising the students' awareness of these issues.
Overall, I found the selected essays engaging, evocative, and thought-provoking. My class is fascinated by the discussion of topics as wide-ranging as early 20th century courtship rituals and reincarnation. I highly recommend this to composition instructors looking for a clear concise text.

As a teacher I love it!
By Christine S. Johnson
As an English 101 Composition instructor, I found this book hand-holds the students through the process of creating different types of essays with wonderful essay examples. The book also gives great tips (questions to ask) for how to choose topics--a major problem for students.
The book became the outline for my entire syllabus because it's so well organized.
The students in my class did not rank the book well at the end of class review, but I don't think they put much effort into the course or read the book.
I'll be using the book again to teach the course though.

This is the best writing textbook I've ever used. I bought it for my college writing class, but had a hard time giving it up after my class was over. Not something you hear a lot about a textbook.

The history of pi, says the author, though a small part of the history of mathematics, is nevertheless a mirror of the history of man. Petr Beckmann holds up this mirror, giving the background of the times when pi made progress and also when it did not, because science was being stifled by militarism or religious fanaticism. The mathematical level of this book is flexible, and there is plenty for readers of all ages and interests.

A Nice Insightful Book on Mathematics
By Khalifa Alhazaa
One of the reviewers complained about this book's continuous digressions. Well, you must know before reading this book that mathematicians were never great historians. Dr Beckmann is a professor of Electrical Engineering and this is more in the Physics side. This makes him potentially worse of a historian. But then would you please stop for a second and tell me what you want to know in a book about "Pi!"
I know I want to know almost anything there is about it. I want to know its origin, how people dealt with it in ancient days, and how people are dealing with it nowadays or in the past 100 year. Do not be mystified, for this number was known long long ago.
Then what is wrong with digressions? We want to know as much as possible, don't we? I saw that Dr Beckmann insights were all interesting. You would say, "Oh, yeah, another one of those geeky mathematicians." But I would only answer that I hate computers but read the section about applying the computer in computing new digits of this strange number.
This number appears in so many places in mathematics. The most famous is in the formula relating the circumference of the circle to the radius. And it appears in so many other sciences. It was the passion of so many amateur mathematicians to compete in the memorization of as many as a million digits after the decimal point.
Do you see why I decided to read the book? It is worth your time. Read it you too.

A readable history of pi for high school algebra students...
By Stephen Armstrong
...or higher. The math in this book will not intimidate the reader, and the general audience with a high school algebra or geometry course can find something interesting in almost all portions of the book. (It was here that I learned that pi is not simply "irrational," it is also "transcendental"--that is, not capable of being a root of any algebraic formula.) The time format runs from 2000 BC to 1970s AD, when computers could be developed and used in order to compute values of pi. My little PC can compute 3000 digits of pi in less than a second, using Mathematica.

I had only one reservation about the book, which is the author's abhorence of organized religions. He states several times that Christianity held science and math back through the post Roman Empire era until the Englightenment ages. He is harshest on Christianity, but he also reserves a few hard barbs for the Persian and Muslim leaders. I thought that the author's heartfelt views on religion distracted the reader from his mathematical insights about Pi.

Amazon also sells a competing book, Alfred S. Posamentier and Ingmar Lehmann, Pi: A biography of the world's most mysterious number (Prometheus Books, 2004). That book has more "real" math in it, and less about the role of organized religion.

The Body in the Record Room: A Mystery (Roy Rogers Mystery), by Joe Barone

It s 1954. When a mental patient who calls himself Roy Rogers finds a body in the hospital record room, his investigation leads him to the murder of Marcia Weinhart. Twenty years earlier, authorities found her mutilated corpse lying on the altar of St. Adrian's Catholic Church in Sunrise, Missouri.

Roy, his friend Harry, and Harry s beloved dog, Bullet, move through the buildings and grounds of the Sunrise Mental Hospital, a thousand-acre facility with more than two thousand patients and eight hundred employees. They go from the record room to the hospital s Catholic chapel, from the blacksmith shop to the hospital cemetery, looking for victims of the terrible abuse behind the Weinhart murder.

In the process, Roy comes to better understand the strength and moral stature of his hero, the real Roy Rogers. He is able to overcome the terror of his past, choosing to forgo violence and work within the law.

Joe Barone s debut makes for an intriguing mystery while also elevating old-time heroes and their values.

From Publishers Weekly
Set in Sunrise, Mo., in 1954, Barone's engaging first novel offers some timely lessons about the corrosive effects of greed and prejudice. When a mental patient, who's convinced he's cowboy star Roy Rogers, and his fellow inmate and trusted friend, Harry, stumble on a dead man in Sunrise State Hospital's record room, they inadvertently shed unwelcome light on Sunrise's darkest secret. As people start getting murdered all around Sunrise, the town blames the hospital for the violence and demands its immediate shutdown. The hospital closure would not so coincidentally result in a financial boon for its opponents. Roy and Harry, falsely accused of the murders, must fight their own insanity in an effort to solve the mystery that's been plaguing the town and their beloved hospital for 20 years. While too many minor characters clutter the plot, readers will cheer the triumph of old-fashioned virtues in the end. (Oct.)

From Booklist
Stand by for a very clever, fresh, and engaging mystery from first-time author Barone. It’s set in the mid-1950s at a Missouri mental institution. Its hero is a patient who calls himself Roy Rogers (he seems to understand he is not really the cowboy star). With the assistance of a fellow patient and a few friends, Roy investigates the two-decades-old murder of a woman whose body was found on the hospital grounds. The story is told in the first person by Roy, who, while taking us through his investigation, tells us what it’s like to live in a mental institution. Barone himself spent many years living on the grounds of just such an institution (his father was the superintendent), and his intimate knowledge of the environment and residents is reflected in this highly detailed novel. Barone does an excellent job at making us very curious about the past life of the book’s narrator: why did he choose to be, of all people, Roy Rogers? A solid, suspenseful mystery with an unusual setting and a likable narrator with his own secrets. --David Pitt

Not your typical mystery, yet a good read
By S. Baldwin
I really liked this book. I love really gritty detective stories by writers like Michael Connelly, John Sandford and John Shannon, so I was really surprised how much I liked The Body in the Record Room. Not gritty, not even a mystery really, yet there was something about the story that captured my interest and led to some self-examination. In this book the mystery is secondary to the characters, who live in a 1950s institution for the mentally ill. The story is told compassionately from the inmates' points of view, their actions played against a hostile outside world peopled by the so-called sane. As in the film The King of Hearts, one wonders who actually belongs in the asylum. The main character claims he is cowboy star Roy Rogers, and whether he actually believes it or not is unimportant. What is important is the reason he chooses Roy as his persona--Roy exemplifies upright moral character, kindness and a strong sense of justice--attributes not so easily found, especially in a time when mental illness and retardation and depression were lumped together and treated with suspicion and ignorance. Good book, Mr. Barone, and thanks for something different.

Even if this kind of book is not your typical fare, try it. I think you will turn the last page with a sigh and a sense of reassuring introspection.

Thought-provoking first mystery
By MysteryPoodle
This book was a real wake-up call after the more mundate mysteries I've been ploughing through. It is reminiscent of The Curious Incident of the Dog in The Night Time in that the protagonist does not have the same mentation as the reader. In this book, the narrator is a man confined to a state mental institution because he has delusional episodes. One night, he finds the body of a man. He and a friend hide the body, but then try to find out how the man died; in doing so, they uncover the secrets of many townspeople and inmates, including another murder many years ago.

The very short chapter structure works well. The prose is good and the characters are very well written -- they may be crazy but they aren't stupid. The author grew up on the grounds of a Missouri state mental hospital. Perhaps the book resonated more for me since I grew up in the town where one of Iowa's mental institutions is located, as did my mother and her father... I have my mother's diary, describing living on the hospital grounds while her mother was principal at the school there. She talked about the "farm hands" that watched over her and her friends as they played on the grounds, mostly men that she later learned were convicted murderers.

Definitely a book that is worth reading!

Gripping
By Esmerelda Luv
I enjoyed the kindle edition of this book. It was a fast read with some funny moments with Harry, Bullet, and of course, Roy. I felt the story was full of compassion and honesty and it kept me entertained as Roy and I tried to make heads or tails of who did what to whom and why there was a body in the records room.

This book also offered some insight to life and times inside a mental institution back in the 1950's. I developed a deep appreciation for the 'Little man' and looked forward to his appearances throughout the story. I felt the Author portrayed each character and situation as realistic and heartfelt. The overall story was well written and I'm glad I discovered this book.

Hit the Kitchen with Hungry Girl

Just because you're watching your waistline doesn't mean you need to go hungry. Recipes from Hungry Girl--like the Fiber-Fried Chicken Strips featured below--feed your every craving without piling on the calories. What's more, Lisa Lillien's lighthearted love for food and fun shines through in every recipe, making it easy to follow her healthy example and even come up with your own simple calorie-saving shortcuts.

From Publishers Weekly
Though she freely admits she's neither a nutritionist nor a doctor, more than 400,000 subscribers rely on author Lillien's "Hungry Girl" e-newsletter for healthy eating tips. In this congenial compilation, most of which is new to the book, she gives dieters a breakfast-to-dinner approach to eating lighter with scores of easy to prepare dishes. Lillien's recipes enlist low-cal substitutes for traditional ingredients; diet lemon-lime soda and sugar-free powdered lemonade drink mix, for example, go into her Magical Low Calorie Margarita. In some cases, such as her Rockin' Restaurant Spinach Dip, Cheesy Chicken Quesadilla and Dan Good Chili, she approximates high-calorie dishes without sacrificing too much in terms of flavor or texture. Unfortunately, those are the exceptions-the Ice Creamless Banana Split and Cheery Chocolate Cheesecake Nuggets (which calls for diet hot cocoa mix, Splenda, fat free cream cheese and sugar free chocolate syrup) taste more like punishment than dessert. Salads are well represented, though few are served with any kind of dressing, and meat dishes can run sky high in sodium. Tips for smart eating at the office, holiday parties, trips and the movies are appreciated, but the book would have benefited from the input of a licensed nutritionist or dietician.

You have to understand the Hungry Girl philosophy
By GreenGirl
In my years of subscribing to the HG Web site and now using this book, it has occurred to me that there are many different philosophies of dieting and weight loss/maintenance. There are WAY more than two, but for the purposes of this review I am going to boil it down:

1. Eat super healthy, nonprocessed, preferably organic foods. Make whole grains, fruits and veggies the mainstays of your diet. Severely curtail fats, oils and sugar. When you want to indulge, enjoy one small portion of something "real" -- i.e. one sliver of chocolate cake, one square of dark chocolate, one cookie, or the like. [And exercise.] People who follow this approach are probably more likely to never snack between meals (or eat only fruits and veggies as snacks), avoid "100-calorie-packs," eschew artificial sweeteners and diet sodas, etc.

2. Follow the above philosophy to the extent that your time and lifestyle allow, but lean on processed low-cal foods to (a) save cooking/prep time and (b) enjoy modified versions of the "junky" foods you feel deprived of when you are dieting or have to eat low-cal in order to maintain your weight. [And exercise.] People who take this approach are probably the lion's share of 100-calorie-pack purchasers, more likely to use artificial sweeteners, drink diet sodas, and so on.

What you have to understand about HG author Lillen is that her Web site and book are tools for those who adopt approach #2. She states repeatedly that she isn't a nutritionist or a dietitian, and she makes no claim for the "healthfulness" of her recipes. They do lean on processed ingredients and tend to contain a lot of sodium, artificial sweetener and chemical ingredients. What they offer is a similar flavor experience to the very high-cal foods lots of people like, with much lower calorie and fat counts (and often more fiber as well).

But for those who would knock this approach (while you certainly retain the moral high ground as organic eating becomes something akin to spiritual cleanliness in more and more people's minds), please bear in mind that for some of us, our eating is always going to be a trade-off in terms of risk. I speak from experience as someone who has maintained a 100-lb. weight loss for over 10 years. For whatever reason, my body processes food in such a way that I gain weight exceptionally easily. I have to be CONSTANTLY vigilant about what I am putting in my mouth and how I am counterbalancing it with exercise. If I relax my vigilance for even a couple of days, it shows up on my body. As a (reformed) compulsive overeater I struggle with eating just one cookie, tiny sliver of cake, etc., every couple of weeks. (Yes, it is true, I would often rather have a larger portion of something that actually isn't AS good as the real thing.) And if you think that this behavior is not incredibly challenging to sustain for a lifetime, you just don't know whereof you speak.

So personally, while I certainly do my best to eat truly healthy, skip sugar, keep fat and meat intake to a minimum, and eat lots of whole grains and fruits/veggies, I salute HG for giving me recipes that allow me to "let my hair down" and enjoy some fun foods along with the rest of the world, without having to lie awake at night and worry about what I ate for lunch.

For the record, among my favorite HG recipes are the butternut squash fries, the turkey reuben and the fettucine "girl-fredo."

Predictable and Processed
By TruthTeller
I have mixed thoughts about the Hungry Girl Book. If you like her web site, you will like the book.

The benefit of the book is that it provides one with suggestions for swapping high calorie, high fat ingredients with lower calorie, lower or fat-free ingredients. The recipes are also very quick and easy.

The problems with the book are; 1) It relies on A LOT of processed ingredients with nutritionally empty, artificial ingredients - e.g. it is okay and healthy to eat low-fat natural cheese and a whole grain hamburger bun instead of plastic pieces of Fat free American cheese with an overprocessed, white flour, tasteless low calorie hamburger bun 2) There is an overemphasis on getting the calories down as far as possible - interesting, catchy approach to draw people to the book, but IT IS AT THE EXPENSE OF TASTE AND NUTRITION 3) Some of the recipes are not "recipes" - I do not need to be told to use low calorie bread, fat-fat cheese, and lean meat to create a sandwich 4) The descriptions are overly enthusiastic - they will not taste that good. It eventually makes you less willing to believe what she is selling after a while. 5) Hungry Girl has financial tie-ins with certain food products (I don't know if I am allowed to name them by brand), like those shirataki noodles (her picture is on them) and muffins (she has her own flavors). This biases her suggestions and swaps - there are better options available. 6) Most of the swaps that she suggests and similar recipes are available already on her web site. If you want to modify one of your favorites, you can find all sorts of swaps on her site or around the internet.

The Mercy Seller: A Novel, by Brenda Rickman Vantrease

In the fifteenth century, with religious intolerance spreading like wildfire across Europe, Englishwoman Anna Bookman and her grandfather, Finn, earn a living in Prague by illuminating precious books---including forbidden translations of the Bible. As their secret trade grows ever more hazardous, Finn urges Anna to seek sanctuary in England. Her passage abroad, however, will be anything but easy.

Meanwhile, a priest in London, Brother Gabriel, dutifully obeys church doctrine by granting pardons . . . for a small fee. But when he is sent to France in disguise to find the source of the banned manuscripts finding their way to England, he meets Anna, who has set up a temporary stall as a bookseller. She has no way of knowing that the rich merchant frequenting her stall is actually a priest---just as he does not know that he has met the woman for whom he will renounce his church.
It is only in England, which is far from the safe harbor once imagined, that their dangerous secrets will be revealed.

In this overly complex but engaging sequel to The Illuminator, Friar Gregory, a 15th-century priest and seller of indulgences, is enlisted to root out an alleged heretic, but his devotion to the church can't override his misgivings. When the unscrupulous Archbishop Arundel suspects Sir John Oldcastle of being in league with the heretical Lollards (they distribute—to the horror of Rome—vernacular translations of the scripture), he dispatches Gregory to build a case. As Gregory looks for evidence, a parallel story unfolds in Prague, where the illuminator from Vantrease's first novel is now an old man whose adult granddaughter, Anna, he has trained as a copyist in the Lollard tradition. As persecution of the Lollards intensifies, Anna is dispatched to England (and Oldcastle's protection). Anna's and Gregory's paths cross in France, where the friar finds his vows at the breaking point, with repercussions that propel the rest of the story. The story is carefully researched, but the establishment of so many characters and the social and religious complexities of the time overwhelms the first half of the novel. Vantrease tells an engaging story and paints a vivid picture of 15th-century Europe, but what she doesn't manage to achieve is a balance between the two. (Mar.)

Mercy! This is One Good Story!
By Margaret
This follow-up to The Illuminator is that rarest of books: a compelling sequel that won't leave readers who missed the first novel behind. The story follows Anna, the grandchild of Finn (the Illuminator of Vantrease's wonderful debut novel), as she carries on his work, disseminating an English translation of the Bible - in circumstances as dangerous as those her grandfather faced. Set in Prague, and in France and England, with engaging characters (particularly Anna and Sir John!), a plot that rocks along, and historic detail that left me feeling I really knew what life was like back then, this one kept me reading late into the night!

Well drawn historical fiction
By Bookphile
After reading Vantrease's The Illuminator, I could not put my finger on what it was about the book that I found vaguely unsatisfying. After having read this one, I now know: I don't find her characters very believable. There aren't any characters in this book that I outright disliked--with the exception of Archbishop Arundel and I think one would be hard pressed to find anyone who thinks him a nice guy--but I felt like they were rather flat in general, more designed to play a certain role than people in their own right. Anna was sympathetic enough but at times she was downright shrill and I didn't find Gabriel as sympathetic as I think the author would expect the reader to find him.

As far as characters go, I was most disappointed in the way Little Bek's story was left off. The only real reason I can think of for his presence in the book has to do with a plot point that comes up at the end of the novel. Otherwise, he seemed like the stock pathetic character and Vantrease made him a bit too disposible for my liking.

Vantrease's great strength, though, is in the way she structures her history. It's almost as if she actually was a part of the past. She paints it so vividly that to read one of her novels is to feel as though you are entering another world. I could almost smell the odors she described and hear the sounds of which she wrote. The true strength of her writing is in these lush and sensuous passages and I found this aspect of her work so strong that I enjoyed the book even though I didn't care all that much for the characters--and usually characters are the most important element of a novel for me. Vantrease does an exemplary job of making the past come to life.

She didn't let me down
By Patricia H. Parker
Ever since finishing "The Illuminator", I have been waiting for this second novel by Ms. Vantrease to be published. She didn't disappoint me. The writer carries the story of Kathryn and Finn forward in time to 15th Century Prague. This was a time when Reformation ideas were taking hold all across Europe. She touches on the story of Jan Hus who attempted to spread Protestantism and died for his efforts. The clear thinking of the Czechoslovakian people has been shown many times during the centuries but we seldom hear of it. When the forces of evil move to stamp out these liberal ideas, Anna, the granddaughter of Kathryn and Finn, moves back to England. On her trip, we meet Gabriel, a priest who must be one of the most confused and conflicted characters in literature. However, it is all good. Ms. Vantrease also brings in Sir John Oldcastle, who was the model for Shakespeare's Sir John Falstaff. We always think of Falstaff as a Tragicomic character and the life of Sir John Oldcastle will show that this was very true to life.

One of the reasons I picked up the first book was the mention of Julian of Norwich and John Wycliff. Before there was Henry the VIII changing the Church in England, early Reformers such as Julian and Wycliff were laying down the foundation and wrote the books which made the conversion from the Roman Church to the Church of England so simple once Henry was shown how he could use the new theology to get his way. This conversion, in spite of the stops and starts caused by the minirebellions and the reign of Mary Tudor, opened new doors and brought about changes which, in large part, made the world we live in now and certainly helped the United States to develop as it did. Those who built the foundations and the people who followed them are all here demonstrating an era which we don't hear much about.

One of the things I really like about Ms. Vantrease's books is her scholarship, and "The Mercy Seller" combines that scholarship and her ability to spin a fine story. Now I will be looking forward to her next book.

A Charmed Life: Growing Up in Macbeth's Castle, by Liza Campbell

We grew up with the same parents in the same castle, but in many ways we each had a moat around us.  Sometimes when visitors came they would say, “You are such lucky children; it’s a fairytale life you live.” And I knew they were right, it was a fairytale upbringing.  But fairy tales are dark and I had no way of telling either a stranger or a friend what was going on; the abnormal became ordinary.

Liza Campbell was the last child to be born at the impressive and renowned Cawdor Castle, the family seat of the Campbells, as featured in Shakespeare’s Macbeth. Liza’s father Hugh, the twenty-fifth Thane, inherited dashing good looks, brains, immense wealth, an ancient and revered title, three stately homes, and 100,000 acres of land.  A Charmed Life tells the story of Liza’s idyllic childhood with her four siblings in Wales in the 1960s, until Hugh inherited Cawdor Castle and moved his family up to the Scottish Highlands.  It was at the historical ancestral home that the fairytale began to resemble a nightmare.

Increasingly overwhelmed by his enormous responsibilities, Hugh tipped into madness fuelled by drink, drugs, and extramarital affairs.  Over the years, the castle was transformed into an arena of reckless extravagance and terrifying domestic violence, leading to the abrupt termination of a legacy that had been passed down through the family for six hundred years.

Written with a sharp wit, A Charmed Life is a contemporary fairytale that tells what is like to grow up as a maiden in a castle where ancient curses and grisly events from centuries ago live on between its stone walls.  Painstakingly honest and thoroughly entertaining, Liza Campbell offers a compelling look at what it is like to grow up with enormous privilege and yet watch the father she idealizes destroy himself, his family, and his heritage.

Praise for A CHARMED LIFE:

"Beautifully written…eminently readable…A memoir which has many elements to identify with--even if you ain't no Lady." --Tama Janowitz, author of Slaves of New York and Area Code 212

“Campbell tells the wild, sorry tale with a sharp, offhand wit.” -- Sunday Times (UK)

“She writes not from catharsis or revenge, but in the spirit of puzzlement and discovery...Completely compelling.” -- Daily Telegraph (UK)

“A gripping page turner...A CHARMED LIFE is a great title, and Liza Campbell's book lives up to it.” -- Daily Mail (UK)

“A modern tragedy ... Written with great courage ... A stark tale of profligacy and injustice.” -- Country Life (UK)

“A very powerful, painful story...I have never read such a compelling study of addiction...An exceptional writer.” -- Mail on Sunday (UK)

“This is a sad book; yet Campbell’s lack of sentimentality and needle-sharp wit make for a guiltily voyeuristic read.” – Independent (UK)

“A memoir that is as free of self-pity as it is of sentimentality ... Poignant.”

–Scotsman (UK)

“As a prose stylist, Liza is comparable to Nancy Astor: wry, deadpan, whimsical.” -- The Sunday Telegraph (UK)

A Charmed Life
By S. I. Miller
(By Elizabeth Miller) My Alabama book club read the British edition of A Charmed Life in September. We all agreed it was a great choice and a marvelous story. It's a tightly written and poignant anthropological study of a privileged, titled, and terribly dysfunctional British family living in Macbeth's famous Cawdor Castle. A generous dash of dark humor counterbalances the grimness of the tale. Liza's book tries to convey to the reader an understanding of her father, and perhaps provide closure for her and her siblings. But frankly no excuse can be made for his betrayal of the Campbell children and shattering of the family legacy. Our book club ladies felt that Liza touched on a number of universal truths, and we could all relate to growing up in a family unlike the ideal TV families of the 1960's. We recommend A Charmed Life to all who would appreciate a sad, touching, and thoroughly memorable story of an extraordinary family. And where else have you seen the word "crepuscular" used so aptly?

"The Glass Castle" of the Scottish Aristocracy
By J. Landau
Absolutely riveting story of Liza Campbell's extraordinary 700-year old family's most recent generations, as bizarre and fascinating as the wildest fiction and all apparently true. It revolves around the recent history of the family that actually lived in Macbeth's castle. It has everything: sex, money, castles (stone rather than glass), fast cars, guns and battles, outrageous aristocratic misadventures, the stepmother from hell and the Scottish countryside.

The book starts off like chick-lit, but any guy will soon be hooked too --something about her father totaling five XK-Es following by the destruction of three Ferraris, having sex with over one hundred women, etc. A mother who is up for sainthood, five delightful siblings, young girls branded by their parents before they were kidnapped so they could be identified years later . . . it makes the life of the author of the bestseller "The Glass Castle" seem mundane by comparison.

Liza Campbell is a wonderful storyteller. Without giving away much, it is a story of family relationships and ill-placed trust with the author trying to see the best in what can only be described as a villain for the ages, or at least a man capable of destroying seven centuries of tradition. And that doesn't include Cawdor Castle's own Cruella de Vil.

Campbell names aristocratic (and Eurotrash)names and the book only becomes more engrossing as you go on, so set aside an afternoon or a couple of readings for one of the most fascinating biographies/autobiographies you will ever read.

I enjoyed the book. The history was great. The human stories in some lives were sad. The book was easy to read straight through.
