Short and Enjoyable

I recommend this book for anyone who has only a few minutes of reading time at different intervals. I enjoy reading these short, but very informative pieces, sometimes I only have a few minutes while waiting for an appointment and these seems to fill the void instead of starting another novel i know I will never have time to finish. I also find them good conversation starters and have encouraged others to read these pieces for a good friendly debate. My favorite piece is "Who shot Johnny?". This tragic, yet familiar story of a loss of innocence by a woman author who has overcome multiple odds against her really pulls at a readers heart strings and makes all Americans feel the problems which face inner city youth. The topics are very diverse and I think you will find something you like. I am buying the second volume and hope it will be as great as the first.

same as older edition?

I haven't bought this 7th edition of the book, but I have the older 3rd edition of it (dark green cover, published in 1999). But the "look inside" option showcases the older edition, making me wonder if there is ANYTHING that is new and updated in this, and if so, what that might be. I was hoping the topics would be tweaked a bit, articles included would be updated/more timely, etc...but you really can't tell that from the listing. bottom line is why would I spend more money on this if it's the just same as what I already have?

Just to let you know, every reading in the eighth edition is new. The goal of this book is to stay current, so while the way its organized might be similar from edition to edition, they try to include in each edition only readings published within the last two years.

Chapter 1
Sitting in the forward operations center in a filthy Egyptian Air Force hangar at the Wadi Qina air base, 300 miles south of Cairo, Colonel Jerry King was powerless to prevent the debacle at Desert One. As chief of staff to Major General James “Hammer” Vaught, the man in charge of the Delta Force attempt to rescue 53 American hostages held captive in Tehran, King could only listen with mounting anger to the frantic satellite radio messages coming out of Iran in the early hours of 25 April 1980. Not that anyone out there at the Desert One staging post, 250 miles southeast of the Iranian capital in the Dasht-e-Kavir desert, could do any better. Even Chargin’ Charlie Beckwith, the former Green Beret colonel who set up Delta and was leading Operation Eagle Claw on the ground, couldn’t prevent what was by any measure “a total goat-fuck” that left eight US servicemen dead.
The operation had been called off after three of the eight US Navy helicopters taking part in the mission developed technical problems that left the joint task force with too few to get both the hostages and the rescue team out. One was abandoned in the desert after an indicator light warned a rotor blade might snap, a second had to pull out of the mission when its gyroscope malfunctioned and the third was declared unserviceable after landing at Desert One. After some argument among the task force commanders over whether or not to go ahead, the mission was called off. It was then that a helicopter and one of the C130s collided, killing the eight US servicemen.
There was a whole bunch of reasons why they died and why the task force failed in its mission—the interservice rivalry that meant every one of the four armed services wanted some involvement in the mission regardless of the fact that they had never worked together before, and all used different operating procedures; the decision to fly the helicopters off an aircraft carrier rather than in from a neighboring country; the navy’s poor maintenance of its helicopters; and the strange decision not to have air force pilots with experience of special ops fly all the aircraft, a move that would have at least ensured the mission got beyond Desert One.
But even if it had, there was another major problem that could have led to the mission failing at its most dangerous point, inside Tehran itself, and afterward Jerry King, a straight-talking veteran of Army Special Forces operations along the Ho Chi Minh Trail, was not slow to make his views known. The CIA had fucked up big time. It had claimed, falsely as it later turned out, to have no one in Tehran who could help Delta prepare for what was always going to be a tricky task. King’s disparaging view of the Agency’s contribution was shared by virtually everyone else involved in Eagle Claw, not least the task force commander General Vaught. “Intelligence from all sources was inadequate from the start and never became responsive,” he said. “The CIA did not, would not or could not provide sufficient agents to go in country and get the information we needed.”1
whatever the reasons for the failure of Eagle Claw, it certainly wasn’t a lack of detailed planning. Preparations for the raid had begun six months earlier on 4 November 1979, the very day a mob of Iranian Revolutionary Guards and militant students, supporters of Ayatollah Khomeini, forced their way into the US embassy in Tehran and seized the hostages. Jerry King, who was then chief of unconventional warfare for special operations in the Joint Chiefs of Staff operations directorate, was called in by Air Force General David C Jones, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, together with the chief of current operations, Brigadier General Johnson. “We were told about the embassy seizure and I was ordered to develop some military options by the following morning,” King recalled. “I was forbidden to inform or involve anyone else, including my immediate superior.”
Jones eventually backed down slightly to allow King to bring in two of his special operations colleagues so there were at least navy and air force representatives involved in his special planning cell, which was set up in the Pentagon’s Eighth Corridor close to the River entrance. Those three men were to become the nucleus of the task force commanded by Jim Vaught, who was described by John T Carney, one of the US Air Force special operations officers brought in to set up the Desert One forward operating base, as “a tall, lean, scraggly, quiet, gravely voiced but soft-spoken infantryman.”2 The unit Vaught and King picked to execute the actual rescue mission was the newly formed Special Forces Operational Detachment—Delta, the counterterrorist force that Beckwith had just recently set up, modeling it on the British Special Air Service (SAS), to provide the US with a counterterrorist team. Delta was based in the Stockade, an old military prison at the Army Special Forces headquarters at Fort Bragg, Fayetteville, North Carolina. Beckwith and King were both veterans of special ops in Vietnam and had learned a lot about their trade serving alongside members of the SAS. “I had an SAS sergeant assigned to me at Fort Bragg in the early sixties,” King recalled. It was part of the exchange mission that provided the inspiration for Delta. The sergeant and an SAS officer were sent to Fort Bragg while Charlie Beckwith and a Green Beret sergeant went to the SAS base at Bradbury Lines, Hereford, in England. For Jerry King, time spent with the highly experienced SAS sergeant was deeply rewarding. “I was wet behind the ears,” King said. “He taught me how to walk.”
Born in Canton, North Carolina, in 1937, Jerry King was an army brat, brought up at military bases in Germany, Korea and the Philippines. His stepfather was a career noncommissioned officer in the US Army. King enlisted into the army’s airborne infantry and after swift promotion through the ranks was picked out as a potential officer. The rookie lieutenant’s first posting was as a platoon commander in Germany. “Facing the Fulda Gap and the possibility of a Soviet thrust, I began to realize that my survival was dramatically enhanced when I had more control over my unit’s actions,” he said. “The arrogance of the young but a belief reinforced over time.”
As a direct result of that conviction, Jerry King developed a hard-nosed attitude that would win him a great deal of respect, and quite a few enemies, in his chosen field of special operations. At 6 foot 2 inches and weighing in at just under 196 pounds, King was a born winner. There might be others who were fitter, but very few could outlast him. Whether it was swimming underwater in preparation for covert approaches on targets or running marathons, he had the kind of mentality that meant he wouldn’t give in. He joined the 77th Special Forces Group (Airborne) at Fort Bragg and was sent to Laos at the head of one of the White Star mobile training teams, which were training local forces to counter North Vietnam’s use of the Ho Chi Minh Trail, the Viet Cong supply route that ran through Laos and Cambodia into South Vietnam. King subsequently led a Special Forces detachment in Vietnam and helped to set up the training program for the Studies and Observations Group (SOG), the euphemistically named special operations command which, between January 1965 and March 1973, mounted several thousand highly success-
ful cross-border reconnaissance missions into Laos, Cambodia and North Vietnam. At 28, King was deemed “too old” for the gruelling missions but on a couple of occasions he managed to bypass the naysayers and went across the border anyway.3
He had known Charlie Beckwith when they were both young lieutenants and was not the Delta commander’s greatest fan, but that didn’t affect his judgment that Delta was “the obvious choice for the entry force.” The first suggestion was that the raid to rescue the hostages should be mounted from eastern Turkey, which seemed a sensible option, allowing total flexibility in the type of aircraft used on the rescue mission and a safe base just across the border from Iran. But inexplicably General Jones ruled out the use of Turkey and two other friendly Middle East countries. “What I considered a purely political and unreasonable decision by the Chairman forced us to look for an alternative launch platform,” King recalled. “Carriers were the only feasible option available.”4
Eventually it was decided that the MC130 Combat Talon aircraft carrying the Delta personnel and a small security force of US Rangers would take off from Wadi Qina, making a brief stopover at the British air base on the island of Masirah, off Oman, while the helicopters that were to carry the Delta teams into a hide site close to Tehran and exfiltrate them, along with the hostages, would launch from the aircraft carrier USS Nimitz in the Gulf of Oman. That last decision created a whole raft of problems that would ultimately lead to the failure of the mission.
“The choice of a carrier as a launch platform virtually dictated the type of aircraft,” King said. They would be US Navy RH53 Sea Stallions, normally used for mine-clearing operations but big enough to carry the hostages and the Delta rescue team out of Iran to safety. It didn’t take long for King to realize that the navy pilots who flew the aircraft were simply not good enough. “I recommended we bring in air force pilots who flew the same helicopter with considerable long flight experience, including one who had participated in the Son Tay raid.” But the senior officer he had to ask for authorization to replace the navy pilots was a US Marine general and the interservice rivalry that would bedevil the Eagle Claw mission took over. “Bef...

Great glimpse into a covert world!

The book, Killer Elite, by Michael Smith is not only a highly interesting expose of an elite American covert military unit, but also provides a thought provoking illustration of how US Foreign Policy objectives are increasingly being met by small teams of operators in the back alleys of the world. The unit is commonly known as the "Activity" and occasional snippets concerning its various missions and techniques have periodically emerged in the mainstream media for the past few decades. Its mission is to support the better-known and more overt Special Operations Forces such as DELTA and the SEALS in conducting their missions. They do this by providing actionable intelligence that they gather via various means such as the handling of agents or through eavesdropping of communication networks. The book further describes how the unit is now evolving into more expanded missions that are similar to the traditional clandestine agent handling performed by the CIA.

The books' beginning reads similar to Steven Emerson's classic, Secret Warriors: Inside the Covert Military Operations of the Reagan Era, but springs forward into more current and less known operations. I was surprised at the level of research and the author's contacts with both the US and British Special Operations and Intelligence Communities. It sheds a great deal of light and is an excellent read for anyone interested in Special Operations or Human Intelligence gathering. For those interested in this field, Fishers of Men by Rob Lewis is also an excellent book.

Inside the World of U.S. Special Ops

As a writer on intelligence matters, I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in the worldwide activities of the U.S. military's Special Operations Forces, as seen through the spectrum of the U.S. Army's secretive clandestine intelligence unit formerly known as the "Intelligence Support Activity." Not only is Mr. Smith's book very readible, but it is also very informative and thought provoking about the vitally important role played by the U.S. military in trying to combat the growing number of terrorist and insurgent threats around the world.

Regardless of where you come down on the political spectrum about U.S. foreign and military policy, this serious book is important because it reminds us that U.S. Special Operations Forces have played an important, albeit secretive role in virtually all significant counterterrorist and counterinsurgency operations since the end of World War II, and that their role in the war on terrorism is becoming increasingly important.

Mr. Smith has a well-deserved reputation for being a top-flight military affairs reporter in England, and this book further confirms his standing as one of the best in the field.

Don't judge this book by the title

Smith's account of the special forces community from Desert One to Enduring Freedom offers an interesting glimpse into the byzantine workings of special operations. If you were expecting a white knuckle Clancy-esque account of operations reeking of cordite and sweat; FORGET IT.

Smith reveals that much of the work is in gathering and proper inmplementation of intelligence, through exploitation and signals gathering. There are myriad of operations recounted in this book: the killing of Pablo Escobar, SAS and Delta snatches of Serb war criminals and the current ops in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Smith also covers the battles within the Penatagon, the scramble for funding and the decision makers.

The authors approach is academic and even handed, so if you expected "go-team-go" and techno-thriller action you're going to be VERY disappointed. Killer Elite is a great page turner for those of us who understand that "James Bond" movies are just that and the REAL shooters are quiet professionals.

"So sudden a chance"

This book presents the transcript of the coroner's report of Robert Dudley's (later Earl of Leicester) wife's death in 1560, believed lost for centuries, but finally found by Dr. Steven Gunn in The Natinonal Archives (England). It says that Amy Robsart had a broken neck and two wounds at unspecified locations on her head, one of which would have involved some form of skull fracture. Since such injuries are not uncommon in serious and fatal stair falls, and since the report is a 16th century piece of paper and not the actual body, it must remain inconclusive. Skidmore concedes that its findings are compatible with an accidental downstairs fall (the jury's verdict), but then goes on to make a case that Amy Dudley was first poisoned for some 18 months and then murdered by over-assiduous men of Dudley's following without their master's knowledge; in the end he hints that Dudley, and possibly Queen Elizabeth, did somehow influence the jury.

The book is essentially a narrative account, the author clearly prefers to tell a story (so much so that the apocryphical "I will have here but one mistress and no master"-anecdote appears three times) than to do a systematic and open-ended case investigation. For a biography of Dudley, however, it is too selective and misleading (not a word about the Kenilworth festival, the Netherlands, the Armada). As a political narrative it is too crudely simplistic and outdated, especially from c.1563; the players become increasingly caricatures. Paradoxically, while (unintentionally?) making clear the hatred of the Habsburg ambassadors against Dudley, the author relies heavily on their gossip for his case. Similarly, Cecil's and Throckmorton's frantic underhand intrigues against "Dudley as royal consort" become admirably clear; nevertheless Skidmore parades Cecil's patently self-interested talk with the Spanish ambassador around the time of Amy's death as evidence that Dudley's men tried to poison her.

So, while there is some exciting material, including three photos of manuscript letters by Amy and Robert Dudley, there are many strange misattributions and inaccuracies, and the forcing of documents into a totally misleading context to press an argument is a recurrent feature. For example: As proof of the alleged extreme loyalty of Dudley's servants to their master (which the author needs for his murder theory), Skidmore quotes the military oath of allegiance to Robert Dudley as Lieutenant-General of the Queen's forces for the Netherlands expedition of 1587, 27 years after Amy's death. Skidmore implies that oath was common practice in the Dudley household in 1560!

In many instances, Skidmore falsifies the picture by suppressing facts and by misrepresenting and even misquoting sources. For example, in order to argue that Amy Dudley was not ill, the author goes so far as to make the Spanish ambassador's archival original, "está muy mala de un pecho" (she is very ill in one breast), into "enferma y mala de un pecho" (sick and ill in one breast). From the fact that Lady Amy speaks of her husband as "my lord" in a letter he deduces that she held him in awe. Now, he must know it was absolute standard for a wife to speak of her husband as her "lord", "my lord's" etc. Even Juliet talks of Romeo as her lord as soon as they are secretly married. More striking examples of these problems are the accounts of Dudley's affairs with Lady Douglas Sheffield and Lettice Knollys; they are deeply flawed and distorted. By witholding vital facts the author paints Dudley, and only him, in an unattractive light: even when he redeems a diamond of Amy's from a pawn-broker after her death, this shows his selfish, materialistic nature: "Jewels, Dudley must have considered, would be wasted on the dead."

After brief discussion, the accident and suicide options vanish mid-way, and the book focuses entirely on one murder theory; any alternative murder scenarios are not mentioned at all! The "murder evidence" rests on the appearance of Sir Richard Verney (a Warwickshire gentleman in whose house Lady Amy had formerly stayed) as organizer of the killing in a c.1563 gossip chronicle and in the satirical libel "Leicester's Commonwealth" of 1584. Scholars have pointed out for years that this proves nothing but that there was a tradition of gossip involving Verney. As is stated even in the 1563 chronicle itself, it was by no means inside information but common talk. However, Skidmore is generally not squeamish about sources. He also ignores incongruities throughout, for example, he presupposes that the stairs Amy fell down were those leading down from the long gallery, although the report says the stairs she fell down adjoined "a certain chamber", possibly Amy's private room from which the only other stairs in the house led down. Skidmore even confidently implies that a quadrangular staircase with a landing is the same thing as a "circular newel staircase".

Verney's murder motive, unsolicited boosting of his master's career, is not at all convincing. At one point Skidmore drops the remark that Cecil would not have risked his position by murdering Amy. Sure! But neither would have Dudley! He would not have risked the axe for murder after having narrowly escaped it for treason. It was natural that all suspicion would fall on Dudley (the more if the crime occurred in his wife's lodgings!), as people were immersed in slanderous gossip regarding him and the Queen. That was a thing his servants, as his enemies in high places, were well aware of.

The "evidence" for Dudley's interference with the jury is that the jury's foreman Sir Richard Smith, formerly "the Queen's man" and later mayor of Abingdon (the town next to the village where Amy died), received some stuffs to make clothes of from Robert Dudley in 1566 -- six years after the event. Skidmore does not discuss why the "Mr. Smith, the Queen's man" of 1566 should be the same Smith as the foreman. It is worth noting that in the edition of Leicester's household accounts by Dr. Simon Adams there figure ten Smithes alone, including another "Queen's man" called Ralph Smith.

It's the same with John Stevenson, another jury member; Skidmore, not bothering to explain why, thinks he was the same man as John Steaphinson, a ferrier and servant listed near grooms of the stable on a 1559/1560 wages list of Dudley's. Skidmore also tries to implicate Dudley via some payments he made at the end of 1560. Alas, there was nothing ominous about these: Anthony Forster (in whose house Amy had lived and died) was receiving funds to wind up her household; Francis Barthewe, whom Skidmore sees as a mysterious "stranger", was a Flemish merchant to whom Dudley had owed money for some five years (comp. p. 40 of the Accounts); Anthony Butler MP was repaid a "bond" -- a normal procedure. Why should this not happen two and a half months after Amy's death?

The 15 jury members' verdict on oath was accident, "as they are able to agree at present". Skidmore makes a lot out of this disclaimer. Anyway, by its very frankness the formulation does not smack of intervention by evil forces. -- "So sudden a chance" does happen in real life.

More on Elizabeth and Leicester

The title implies this book is about the mysterious death of Amy Dudley, but there are only about 50 pages on it. While the focus on the book is elsewhere, the author, Chris Skidmore, does help the reader interpret what little is known of Amy, her teen age marriage (unusual for its day), her few surviving letters, her moving from host family to host family, and the reports of an illness, from the few scraps of surviving materials.

Also, the author heightens your awareness of the impact of Amy's suspicious death on Elizabeth, Dudley and others in the court. The death occurs two years into Elizabeth's reign. If Amy was murdered so that Dudley could take the hand of the Queen of England, the culprits suffered the consequences of its opposite effect. The suspicious death made it impossible for Elizabeth to accept Dudley's marriage proposal.

There is a lot of material, much of it new to me, about the many who pressed their marriage suits in the first half of Elizabeth's reign. There is more, too, on how Elizabeth was pressured to take a husband. Skidmore has the clearest presentation I've seen yet of the facts on and interpretations of the proposed marriage of Robert Dudley to Mary Queen of Scots. There is a lot more about Dudley, how he became an earl, his finances, gambling and his other flirtations.

Both Sweet Robin: A Biography of Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester 1533-1588 and Elizabeth & Leicester: Power, Passion, Politics present a more sympathetic portrait of Robert Dudley. This book shows a more manipulative side of him. He surely is cold towards Amy, whom he lodges with host families while he is absent for months at a time. His treatment of Douglas is not much better.

It is hard for modern readers to understand the psychology of a man who experienced the beheading of a father and grandfather at the hands of a monarch. These gruesome deaths and that of Elizabeth's mother are surely part of their bond, but also may have created a need in Robert Dudley to be near the monarch. Was Dudley capable of murdering his wife, or did he carry himself in a way that his retainers would think this murder was something he wanted? Would he, and/or Elizabeth rig a jury as Skidmore suggests?

While Skidmore emphasizes some ideas and excludes others, he raises points of interest and presents more detail on this early part of Elizabeth's reign. Some reviewers have suggested that Skidmore's theory be reworked into a novel, which is a pretty good idea.

Some interesting material

I can't dispute any of Christine Arabella's criticism. I did like the book a little better than she did. For me the coroner's report makes the likelihood of murder extremely unlikely, and therefore the latter part of the book is largely superfluous. Having just reread Arabella's review, I have to think 3 stars may be too much, but 2 seems too little, 2.5.

The guitarist of the Police begins his entertaining, highly readable memoir of superstardom near the end, on August 18, 1983, at Shea Stadium, when the band became the first to play there since the Beatles. It was one of the band's last concerts. Thereafter, Summers discusses, quite eloquently, the Faustian pact fame seemingly involves, which in his case entailed divorce and estrangement from his daughter. He also spends a good portion of the book on his earlier life: his English seaside childhood in Bournemouth, his parents' difficult marriage (he and his younger brother were placed in an orphanage for six months), the first inklings of musical talent. He reports years of struggle, later moderate success in nationally known bands, and stints in the internationally known Soft Machine and the Animals before the Police. By his lights, life on the road with the Police was one hotel room in a strange city after another. A candid appraisal of the cost of celebrity. June Sawyers

Most enjoyable read

Summers is an interesting (and very good) writer, a somewhat Baroque, gonzo style that is both insightful and often laugh-out-loud funny. As he points out, when he first started playing in a band as a teenager there were no "guitar heroes," no MTV, no stadium rock, or any of the trappings one now associates with the industry. He was there during the metamorphasis, and the book is an inside look at this cultural revolution, a series of real-life adventures, often bizarro; it's (fortunately) not an analysis of an era, the thing just flows along, what makes it so much fun to read. (He also seems to have a photograpic-memory recall of people and events.)

For Police fans, or those who enjoy Andy's jazz playing, his description of how his playing style evolved is enlightening. Although he knew and greatly admired the likes of Clapton, Hendrix et al, he never tried to emulate their playing - that was their thing, and Summers was more interested in ideas from Monk to Indian ragas, more free-form harmonic constructs. Moving away from traditional triadic harmony - where the third of a scale pretty much determines a major or minor feel - always seemed to be in his head, so when the Police hooked up the ingredients (including Sting's classical guitar background and openness to new ideas) were present for a new sound - stacked fifths and a lot of seconds and fourths - that makes a lot of their music so hypnotic. It all seems very simple now when one looks at sheet music, but it all came out of Summers' life experience - a pretty wild ride, but he never lost his focus.

Amazing Story, Bad Seller

This is one of the best autobiographies I've ever read. Andy Summers is an amazing musician and storyteller, and his life before the Police was interesting.

As for the actual copy I ordered, well...I was aware it was an old library book, but I was grossed out by the food crumbs stuck in the pages. Good thing this book wasn't a gift.

The Incredible Life of Andy Summers

Reading this book was like riding a roller coaster.

I'm a huge 'Police' fan, and when I saw Andy had an auto biography out I ran out and bought it right away.

At first, I had a hard time with it. Andy writes with gret attention to detail; it's very artistic, and a bit 'lulling'.

But once you get past his childhood and into his 'musical years', it's incredible! Andy's wit is so dry and so clever, you want to sit and have a few lagers with him and just listen to him tell his tales.

In the true form of a Gentleman, Andy doesn't really dish dirt on his fellow Policemen. This was 'nice'...but everyone wants a little juicy gossip on their favorite celebs. As the book wore down and the break up of the Police was imminent, you suddenly realize that Andy is not going to say anything terribly mean (or truthfully mean) about Sting or Stewart.

I was a little disappointed with this last fact, but I still reccomend this book not only to every Police fan, but to every Guitarist. Andy played with all of the greats, and his stories about being on the road are priceless!

Laura Dower has written more than ninety books for young readers of all ages―from picture books to young adult fiction and nonfiction―and is the author of the popular series From the Files of Madison Finn. Laura was born in Massachusetts, and graduated from Columbia University. After a procession of odd jobs―babysitting, waitressing, coffee-making, switchboard-operating―she worked in children's publishing for many years before becoming a full-time author. She lives in Yonkers, New York with her husband and three children. In her spare time, she is a Cub Scout den leader and Girl Scout Brownie troop co-leader.

Great book for pre teen girls

I bought this book for my 10 year old daughter, and she LOVES it, it gives tons of Info, on all things girl, from Makeup to sports, career moves, and passing notes in school, I bought it for her in December, and she has not given it up, she is always going back to it. This book actually sparks dinner time conversation, It was a great way to find a little extra to bond with her through this book!

I got this book a few weeks ago. I loved it!I really enjoy the laura dower books. When I was nine and ten, I read the Madison Finn series. I loved the authors creative test and her style of writing. I was phsyched when I heard she was writing this book.

This book is informative, but at the same time, fun!
I am always surprised at whats on the next page.I never get tired of reading it.
It has really cool ideas, too.
The "How-to`s" are one of my favorites.
Learn how to paint toenails, read about women in sports, or start your first career. This book will satisfy any girl from the tomboy to the girly girl.

SOME FRIENDLY ADVICE

Here's what I think: This could be so much better than it is! Compare it to the boys version. The boys version is so cool and adventurous. This book is telling girls that what they really want to do is paint toenails and have slumber parties. Why? Girls can wrestle alligators and find buried treasure...I feel like this book is reinforcing stereotypes and encouraging girls to be sedentary.

Unnecessary...

I checked this one out from the local library and found very little of use here. Aside from a few brief essays that reiterate information found elsewhere, this reads like a distilled version of Writer's Market or the Hollywood Creative Directory -- lots of addresses and phone numbers, and even some e-mails and web links. However, I found many listings to be out of date (already), and some others overlooked. For another $25, you can have one of the titles I just mentioned. Sure it's more money, but I'd rather have something that's up to date and revised annually. Turner seems to be attempting to re-invent the wheel here. With more chapters or sections on writing, this might be a decent resource, but as it is, this title falls into the ever-growing pile of unnecessary screenwriting books that simply rehash information found in other, better, more extensive titles.

This book is a good starting point for writers who want to be able to get their work out there. The majority of the book, in fact, is taken up by a lot of names, addresses, phone numbers, and email addresses of production companies, societies, festivals, college courses, etc. Which is a good thing, if you are just working on your first screenplay.

However, if you are looking for a book that will tell you specific things such as how to format a screenplay, this is not your book. I recommend checking it out from a library and just getting the information you need out of it, instead of paying $18 for it.

If you are looking at a book that will teach you how to write an effective screenplay, this is not your book.
It lacks anything to do with the actual practice of writing a screen play.
It has however motivational articles that will motivate anyone to pursue screenwriting. You could probably spend an hour reading them at the bookstore. So don't waist your money!
If you want a very good reference for screenwriter clubs, agencies, schools etc. The lists are plentiful.
Again, this is not a book which teaches screenwriting period.

Author Biographies: Michael F Pavkovic is Associate Professor of History and Director of the Diplomacy and Military Studies Programs at Hawaii Pacific University. Rob S. Rice is a Professor at the American Military University. Frederick C. Schneid is a Professor of History at High Point University in North Carolina. Chris L. Scott was Head of Education for The Royal Armouries. He has edited the magazine Battlefield, and co-founded The Guild of Battlefield Guides.

About the Author

Michael F. Pavkovic is Associate Professor of Strategy and Policy at the United States Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island. He is the co-author of What is Military History? and has published on a variety of subjects in military history.

Rob S. Rice is a Professor at the American Military University, teaching courses on Ancient and Modern Naval Warfare. He has published articles in the Oxford Companion to American Military History and The Reader's Guide to Military History, and contributed to Fighting Techniques of the Ancient World.

Frederick C. Schneid is a Professor of History at High Point University in North Carolina. He has written several books on European warfare and is Southern Regional Director of the Society for Military History.

Chris L. Scott was Head of Education for the Royal Armouries. He is a member of the Royal Historical Society and the Guild of Battlefield Guides, and has lectured for the British Commission for Military History and the Battlefields Trust. He has written several books on military history, edited the magazine Battlefield, and co-founded The Guild of Battlefield Guides.

Good read, little lacking in detail

I sought this book as an introduction to the fighting techniques of the Napoleonic era, and was reasonably satisfied. For serious study, however, it is lacking. I am left with quite a few more questions than answers after reading this book. There are several excellent anecdotes concerning the historic personages of the era, but unfortunately the real "meat" of the subject is sadly missing. The battle descriptions are average and the maps downright confusing (they mix colors from battle to battle). The battles are meant as illustrations of the techniques described in the chapters, but they come off as loosely related and do not adequately convey the intended lesson. Perhaps I was searching for something a bit more scholarly.

Interesting introduction to the warfare of the period

I have read critiques about the books in this collection being too shallow, but I find it interesting. Of course, I would like to know more about the subject, but this is a quite good introduction for a period of warfare of which I knew practically nothing. I plan to get all the titles in the series.

good entry level read

I have recently bought this book along with a couple of Osprey on British and French infantry tactics during Napoleonic wars.

Put it very briefly, get this book instead of the Ospreys. It covers not only infantry, cavalry, artillery but also naval warfare. The book gives numerous lively examples and accounts about the different achievements of each arm. One can find numerous battles explained with maps, each detailing the successes of a particular use of cavalry, artillery or infantry.

This little book does extremely well in its own modest and pedagogical way what others more convoluted writings fail to achieve: inspire!

As a conclusion: a well written and engaging entry level book. Happy with it and will read it again with pleasure.
