Complete fairy tale....

I was very disappointed in this book. The first 1/4 of it was interesting but, as it went along, the whole book was like someone was writing a fantasy they were indulging in. It was too descriptive and drawn out. Got to the point I was leading ahead by ten or more pages at a time.

A thoroughly enjoyable first book in a trilogy. Interesting story that keeps one's interest. Hard to put down. It's got a bit of everything...romance, mystery, excitement and surprising twists and turns. Can't wait to start book two!

Best of the best

If only I could give ten stars. This novel was recommended to me by a friend, and I know it's one I'll be recommending to everyone I know, as well. Rich, big, juicy, exciting, romantic -- it has everything: a wonderful heroine you can root for wholeheartedly, a fabulous love story, a magnificent journey and character arc, impeccable research, and settings that are so alive and rich in detail they become characters right along with Fiona, Joe, Nick, Will, Michael, Seamie, and all the others. Once I began reading the book, I didn't want to do anything else. I have my copy of its sequel, THE WINTER ROSE, and I'm torn between saving it so I'll have something wonderful to look forward to and reading it right now. I'm also excited to know that Jennifer Donnelly is planning a third book in the trilogy and hope she writes fast! VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Better than I thought!

This book was a little rough to start, had no idea what to expect, While I love all her writings... this one didn't seem like my style of reading...boy was I wrong! I couldn't put it down after chapter 2! Very Good!!

Madeleine Wickham weaves a funny, breezy, and tender story with her usual British magnetism and sprightliness of touch

I absolutely love Sophie Kinsella and this is the first book I've tried of her chick-lit line featuring less romance and more grounded issues--through her real name, Madeleine Wickham. Sleeping Arrangements is light, refreshing, and has a bit of a implausible--but still charmingly British--storyline; I enjoyed it immensely, but don't think it's something from which I took much away.

The hidden past surrounding Chloe and Hugh is slowly unraveled through flashbacks. From their first encounter at Gerard's villa, there's an explosive recognition--boom. From there on, readers slowly learn what exactly it is that's between them, and how exactly they'll react. Without giving too much away, I will say the plot itself was highly extractable and far-fetched, but I enjoyed it nonetheless.

Wickham's characters aren't particularly deep. For the most part, they're static and unrelateable, but she pens them with such grace and endearment, that I can't help but like them all. Even the ones that are portrayed negatively, such as Hugh's ridiculously anal wife, Amanda, are pleasing and entertaining to follow.

The highlight of this novel would definitely be its execution. The plot and characters themselves are mediocre and unremarkable, but the writing flows easily, and Wickham's style is smooth, often subtly hilarious, and blithe. I breezed through this novel; Sleeping Arrangements is a quick, lighthearted story set to the backdrop of a gorgeous Spanish town; a great read for a sunny day!

Pros: Charmingly clever // Witty and perceptive // Linear storyline // Light, breezy read // Masterful, yet brief description of Spanish countryside

Cons: Shallow, two-dimensional characters // Nothing deep or profound // Unmemorable

Verdict: Cute and fluffy, Sleeping Arrangements isn't particularly complex or profound, but it's a damn entertaining read. The characters are fun to get to know and the story unravels by itself; this is effortless, feel-good chick-lit with stormy twists and turns and a penchant for family values. Madeleine Wickham weaves a funny, breezy, and tender story with her usual British magnetism and sprightliness of touch.

Rating: 8 out of 10 hearts (4 stars): An engaging read; highly recommended.

More Serious than Sophie.....

Having read most of Sophie Kinsella's novels, I was eager to dive into her work under her real name, Madeleine Wickham. What I have found is that the Kinsella works are more like adult fairy tales, where everything works out with a happy ending. In her Wickham works, the endings are more true to real life. So if you are wanting a fantasy happy ending, please do not bother with the Wickham works as they will be too much of a downer for you.

Now on to the actual book. I enjoyed "The Gatecrasher" much better. I felt that these characters were way too self-absorbed. Each one wanted to meet the desires of his or her own Id constantly. Amanda actually turned out to be my favorite character of all, mainly because she acted like a real person to me. The rest were too one sided. I hated the Nanny in the book as I felt she was way over the top. I did enjoy the ending because it didn't have the fairy tale ending. It gave a real-ending to the problems presented in the novel.

As for future reading, I think I am going to stick to her lighter fare under Sophie Kinsella.

The main plot is strengthened by several subplots including the whereabouts of a $20,000 withdrawal made the day of Lorna's death; the misleading spying antics of her landlord's wife; and the greed and jealousy of the victim's overweight older sister. Grafton's writing is vivid when describing Kinsey's soul-searching about the evil some people commit and in the resultant powerful ending. Though the 11th in the series, "K" is neither weak nor repetitive, providing excitement, intrigue, and a fierce need to finish reading it in one sitting.

A Guilty Delight

Ahh, Sue Grafton. My guilty pleasure of choice, because with her (usually) firm grip on characterization and plotting she crafts the best mystery series out there with her alphabet mysteries -- and one could scarcely call them a 'guilty' pleasure at all. Having just read three heavy, depressing novels in a row I found that I needed an escape. So what did I do? I picked up the next installment of P.I. Kinsey Millhone's adventures and found solace in her hometown of Santa Teresa, California in the 1980s. "K is for Killer" is a step up from the clunking "J is for Judgment", but unfortunately suffers from some problems of its own. While I am imminently satisfied with "K", I am a little nervous. "H" was a flat-out stinker, "J" was pretty flawed, and now "K" shows visible signs of strain in Grafton's usually tight grip on pacing and plotting -- with only the sterling "I is for Innocent" remaining on par with the earlier books in the series. You see, while Grafton's style usually has the plot delving right into the mystery at hand (she is not an author who likes to waste time -- which is one of the things I love about her), in "K" it feels forced and unrealistic. Kinsey is approached by a client, Janice Kepler, who wants her to investigate her daughter Lorna's mysterious death ten months earlier, late on a Sunday evening. By Monday morning Kinsey has not only plowed through the background information that Janice supplied her with, but spoken to not one but TWO of the people involved in the case. Kinsey's investigation moves at such a rapid clip that it becomes completely implausible. And in all of her questioning, only one potential suspect in the entire book seems reluctant to talk to her. One suspect is even willing to squeeze her in at a moment's notice even though he has an important annual meeting in a mere fifteen minutes. Now come on -- guilty or innocent, wouldn't he rather prep for the meeting than re-hash the details of a case he's been talking to the police about for ten months?

A lot of criticism has been lobbed at this book in recent reviews that Kinsey gets too unrealistically involved in the life of a young prostitute character, and I think this is only half true. She doesn't seem to get any more involved with this character than she does with other characters in other books, but her crazed devotion to the case is startlingly out of place, and makes it appear that way. And here lies the defining flaw of "K is for Killer": its plot is remarkably contrived for a Grafton novel. Kinsey even develops a curious -- and unexplained -- case of insomnia that allows her to keep working on the case at all hours and keep the plot moving (and how lucky for her that most of the suspects also work nights, so they are always available no matter how ridiculous the hour). Another all-too-convenient set-up has her randomly showing up at a suspect's house in the middle of the night for no apparent reason other than to stumble upon someone beating them half to death with a pipe. It might have been shocking if it hadn't been so predictable -- and there's a word I NEVER thought that I would associate with Grafton. The ending is also, frankly, ridiculous, and not because of who the killer turns out to be but because of how the final confrontation plays out and where it takes place. Ludicrous -- ANOTHER word I never thought I would associate with Grafton.

So, with all of that griping why am I giving "K" four stars instead of three? Perhaps a degree of it is loyalty to Grafton, but not much. Truth is that as flawed as "K" is it's still an enjoyable ride, and it was just what the doctor ordered. I wanted a guilty pleasure and I got one, and the only troubling factor here is that "H", "J", and "K" have amplified the 'guilty' half of that equation a little too much. I look forward to continuing through the series with "L is for Lawless", but I hope that Grafton manages to bring the pleasurable aspect of her books back to the forefront.

Establishing Shot

In his dream, K. flies.

Below him is the island: verdant and vertiginous, lunatic with creation, lush like a scrap of Eden discarded and forgotten in the ocean's endless tundra. Trees flash by, rainforest-dense, tropical growth shrouding the hills in overstuffed quilted folds. Flocks of birds glitter like refracting jewels, like op art on the wing, Vs and swarms and grand unruly mobs weaving from scarp to treetop to lakeside and up again into open sky. Toward K.

K. has no words for this. In fact K. has no words at all. The language center in his brain looks like a Jackson Pollack painting dropped from a great height. K. is preliterate, prelingual; in fact, pre-just about anything you can think of. His thoughts are the pictures he sees and the feelings they create. Sensation is his vocabulary: flavor, touch, sound, intuition, image. And smell most of all. In his dream, the heels-over-head feelings of floating, swooping, soaring are bereft of words to name them. The closest he can come is to grunt in his sleep, whimper and purr and coo and bleat. Slumbering high in his treetop nest, K. does just this. But in his dream, he flies.

Not all dreams are such. Sometimes he sees faces, figures of others like himself: huge, shambolic forms lurching across the primeval landscape. In ordinary life—though "ordinary" is a precarious word to use around here—in ordinary life, K. wanders as solitary as John the Baptist, so the feelings stirred up by these misty figures elide into a whirlpool of difficult-to-understand emotions. In his waking life, K. has never seen anything even remotely resembling himself: an oversized, black-furred, butterfly-winged, fish-scaled, hawk-taloned, insect-antennaed primate. Sometimes he wonders, as best he can, why this is so. Such wondering is difficult without words. Ideas like species or even family lie far outside his ken; he is possessed of a rudimentary sense of me and a slightly clearer sense of them, but abstractions of any greater complexity elude him. He cannot know that he is a species of one, the first, last and only of his race: a race that is over before it starts. The merciless demands of natural selection have declared his impossibly overgrown, jumbled-up self to be simply too huge, too ungainly and demanding —of nourishment, of physical space—to evolve further. The other preposterous species of the island, the fish-finned insect-rats and miniature, eight-eyed mole people, are similarly marked, but possessing as they do even less self-awareness than K., they don't know it either.

In his dream, K. circles high in the air, flirts with the clouds, brushes the firmament, pirouettes like a deformed Nureyev before flipping head-down and plummeting toward a lake. The water approaches with gut-clenching speed, and K.'s heart jolts into double time. Waves glitter and smear across his vision. At the moment of impact, K. jerks himself awake. The tree he is lounging in shudders as if struck, and a multitude of storks takes noisily to the air.

Around K. the island hunkers, observing him. Low morning sun wrestles heavy clouds. Tropical forest, wet-earth smells, plenty of bugs.

K. peers about groggily. His heart beats fast as if he is in danger, but he smells none, hears none. What dangers are there, anyway, for a creature such as himself? The insect-rats are too small to mention, the dens of the mole people lie deep underground. K. flicks his tongue and smells the peaceful air. Already his heart is slowing, the dream is fading, then faded, then gone: river mist that flees the sun. His blood pressure drops. He reaches for a nearby cluster of leaves and stuffs them in his mouth, chewing meditatively. An observer might be forgiven for thinking that K. is lost in thought. He is not. He is simply lost. Or more properly, he is waiting for a stimulus, internal or external, to prod him into motion. Perhaps hunger, or the approach of the flying lizard who occasionally torments him, or the need to relieve his bowels, or a thunderstorm.

K. sits patiently, chewing without thinking. Waiting, like one of Pavlov's now-famous slobbering dogs, for something to happen.

Later that day, something does.

A familiar tale, uniquely Maine.

I am a huge fan of Maine's and was naturally quite excited to see he had a new book out. As with his biblical fiction, he has taken a well-known story and made it his own (this one just happens to not be from the bible.)

Maine's writing is top notch, and his word-play is one of the things I most enjoy when reading his books. His humor is my favorite aspect of his writing, and this book contains some gems.

As with his other books, Maine is not shy about sharing his opinions, sometimes overtly, sometimes subtly. In the scope of this "Monster Movie" tale there is just enough commentary to keep you thinking. I'd be hard pressed to find a topic that wasn't at least briefly touched on (money, power, greed, sex, the media, etc. etc.)

I probably wouldn't recommend this as a first exposure to Maine, unless you are a fan of the monster movie genre. The Preservationist is a great introduction to Maine's work, but once a fan I think you'd agree that he could write the copy on a cereal box and make it unique and interesting.

On the soapbox and Lady Liberty

Maine sets up the book as a spoof of 1950s horror films, complete with corny dialogue, while at the same time echoing John Gardner's "Grendel" in that Maine tries to get into the "head" of a mutant, 40-foot monster. Some of the writing, particularly in the deptictions of the characters of Betty and Doug, is very good, and there's a good deal of excitement as well as sex and gore. But Maine has axes to grind about the United States and the world of the 1950s, and the novel, short as it is, suffers from the pretty naked preaching about Iran, Palenstine and Hungary.

If you thought the 1950's monster movie story was all used up, David Maine will prove you wrong as soon as you've hacked your way through a few pages of jungle on his nuclear-contaminated island. Maine includes all the parts left out of the originals: the primitive sacrificial victim who preceded the beautiful blonde intruder, the sluggish thought processes of the innocent vegetarian monster. He even fleshes out the highly interesting sex life you always fantasized about between the square-jawed hero and the big-busted heroine he saves. Gotta love it!

An arch, sardonic comic-book of a novel that brings technicolor into a black and white landscape. Definitely a romp.

wonderful Regency romance

In 1821 everyone admires yet also fears the notorious Lords of Vice. Perhaps the most frightening of the friends is Lord Gabriel "Reign" Housely, who's deriding of others since his wife died after a spat nine years ago, is beyond polite nasty.

When Lady Sophie Northam was a child she suffered an injury that wrecked her eyesight. When she meets Gabriel, she is unable to see him, but can hear his scornful cynical tone. Instead of backing away like most do when Gabriel rips skin, Sophie senses the melancholy he conceals beneath a veneer of derision. Still she also knows her imperfect body makes her an undesirable so she plans to stay away from the aristocrat she is attracted to in order to avoid the hurt she expects she would feel. He refuses to allow her to run as he wants her too. However, their parents' deadly trysts leave both wondering if love is enough to surmount their interrelated heritage.

The latest Lords of Vice Regency romance (see All Night with a Rogue and After Dark with a Scoundrel) is a wonderful pairing of a seemingly Romeo and Juliet like star-crossed pair with additional personal issues that make each feels less than worthy of the other. The story line is fast-paced but it is the tango between the female who cannot see yet "sees" into the soul of her beloved and the male who feels guilt over his late wife's death.

Plot worked but wanted more character development

Till Dawn with the Devil has an intriguing storyline with some unexpected twists but somehow it never really grabbed me the way it should have. The characters of this novel are not fully developed, especially the heroine, who was a little bland.

The hero of this tale, Reign Housely, the Earl of Raincourt belongs to an exclusive club, aristocrats who are known as the lords of Vice. There is an expectation, therefore, that Reign will be a naughty boy very much in need of taming, not so. Reign is already rather tame, he has a temper and he is independent but he definitely was not overly jaded nor was he truly all that bad. He does have a tarnished past though.

Lady Sophia has lost part of her vision as a child and she encounters Reign at a society function. She knows who he is, that he belongs to the Lords of Vice and she is more than aware that his family and hers are entangled in a sordid sad history. This does not deter Sophia from wanting to meet Reign.

Upon their first meeting they share an innocent kiss which might just be the best scene in the novel, amidst the soft moonlight and straining night music Reign is enchanted by innocent Sophia. He does not know her identity and when he discovers who she is, they are separated by Sophia's overbearing brothers.

The two do not forget their sweet kiss and whenever they see each other at societal events their mutual attraction grows stronger. Reign comes to Sophia's rescue when her brother threatens to marry her off without her consent, Reign also lets Sophia know that he is not a believer in love and she should not expect such an emotional response from him.

Several aspects of this story never really materialized. Reign and Sophia's family histories never came into play until the very end of the novel and even then, it was an outside force rather than their own emotions which compelled them to search for answers to their past. For a sinful Aristocrat, Reign was altogether charming and polite with Sophia. His character would have been richer if he had been a little wilder. Sophia was barely known. Yes, she was kind but I felt as if there was so much more to her that I was not told. Sophie's history is scarce and it would have been interesting to read about how she coped as a child with vision problems and even what her hobbies were. Her vision impairment was only described as someone who was looking through oil and water and trying to focus. This really did not describe well enough to me her vision capabilities and limitations. She seemed to be able to see Reign's face but was it altogether blurry, how far away could she focus?

Despite these criticisms, there are some rather fine moments in this novel. Sophia's archery lesson shows Reign in his best light. It is a sensuous and care free scene for both characters. The dialogue between the protagonists moves the story forward and reveals their innermost thoughts; Reigns' is particularly good when he contemplates Sophia. Overall this gets a three star rating; I wanted more background for Sophia and more vice from Reign.

Gabriel Housely, the Earl of Rainecourt, or "Reign" is welcome at ton events, but that doesn't stop people from gossiping about him. Eight years ago, his pregnant wife was found dead in her room, with a broken neck. Although most believe it to be a tragic accident, there are those that think Reign is guilty.

Lady Sophia is tired of feeling like a burden to her two brothers Henry and Stephan. Her parents were murdered when she was six in an apparent murder-suicide and during the attack, she was struck in the head, and her eyesight has been very poor ever since.

It is at a ball, that Sophia's beauty catches Reign's attention. Normally not one to dally with the ladies, he asks her to dance which throws the shyer Sophia off guard. When getting some air, they realize the sad history they share - it was Reign's father who murdered Sophia's parents and then killed himself. Her brothers want her to have nothing to do with him, but soon, her brothers get in way over their heads in the gambling halls, and Reign may be her only saving grace.

I was very disappointed with Til Dawn With the Devil. Right off the bat Reign and Sophia both realize that Reign's father murdered Sophia's parents and caused a punishing blow to her head and yet hardly anything comes of it. I understand Reign is an innocent party pertaining to his father's actions, but that is a lot of baggage to deal with. The hurt and anger of losing her parents is still surrounding Sophia, but nothing is made of Reign's family connections. No opportunity is taken to explore this very fragile history that has intertwined their lives.

There are also nasty rumors swirling around Reign that he murdered his first wife and unborn child. Again, Sophia has 100% confidence he is an innocent. Sophia is about ready to be auctioned off by her brothers to cover their debt and Reign swoops in. Here is a man that she really doesn't know all that well with a very sordid, mysterious past and she not only accepts his proposal with ease, but their marriage is smooth sailing too. With the emotional distress Sophia has overcome with her murdered parents and her own assault, coupled with Reign's horrid marriage, the two of them got together too easily!! Where is the drama? The angst?

The book ends with a very dramatic, action packed event, but overall, it lacked conflict, and it missed the mark in confronting the hero and heroine's emotions that should have played a big role.

Great treatment of subject lots of children will be able to relate to

I read this aloud to my 8yo daughter last year and we both enjoyed it. Floss's feelings of angst about choosing between her divorced parents is something that many readers might be able to relate to. She also learns important lessons about friendship but has some painful experiences along the way (such as the mortifying shopping trip and being called names and teased about her dad). There are some great adult characters in the book too - Flora's bumbling but ultimately likeable father, Rhiannon's revolting mother, the lovely Rose with her pink caravan and nail polish, Susan's nerdy academic dad etc etc. The other advantage of this book is that it is nice and fat so great value for money. Best of all it is a great read from start to finish.

Jacqueline WIlson is a fabulous writer for this age because she puts so much detail into her characters and stories yet still writes in a way that is accessible and engaging for kids. She is also not afraid to tackle difficult issues but doesn't do this in a dreary or didactic way. I heard she has just been made a Dame in UK for her services to children's literature. Very well deserved!

Candy Floss

Jacqueline Wilson is one of my favourite authors.
I like this book and I think it is very interesting to read,
This book is about a girl called Flora who lives with her mum and her step father and her step brother Tim.
Her father lives in his cafe Harley's cafe that only has three regular customers.
The part that I really liked is when Flora becomes friend with Susan Pots who is grate at every school subject and is has an excellent ability in writing poems.
The part that I did not enjoy much was when Flora's best friend goes off with two of Flora's enemies.
The only inappropriate word used in the book is `sex' which is only used once. Overall it is a great a book to read with a lot of exciting and dramatic parts to read.

Hesse ( Letters from Rifka ) turns out an exemplary chapter book with this superbly structured work about a girl and her dog. Tate's greatest wish is to keep the mutt that has strayed into her family's yard: "Mam and Pap hadn't said I could keep her," confides Tate, the narrator. "But they hadn't said I couldn't, either." The plot is familiar--Mam doesn't like dogs, Pap is sympathetic but stern, and when neighbors start complaining about the dog, Mam and Pap find it a new home, far away. Hesse, however, makes the story seem fresh. A few deft references evoke the setting, rural New England in the indeterminate past, and skillful use of easy-to-read language supplies the color (Mam, for example, doesn't simply bake bread; instead, "The muscles worked in her long back as her fist kneaded dough"). Tate herself is appealingly resourceful and determined, and the obstacles in her path are neither entirely predictable nor too neatly hurdled. Each chapter swings the reader through a spectrum of emotions and a comfortable surge of expectation. Ages 7-9.

Grade 3-5-A starving dog is the catalyst that propels Tate, 10, toward adulthood. Plot and characterization effortlessly evolve through her narration, which is as honest and direct as the character herself. Her simple language is filled with images of rural New England. She describes her struggle to keep the stray, which begins as soon as the exhausted animal appears on her porch. Even though her mother is terrified of dogs, Tate quickly wraps her life around her new-found pet, whose ears are as soft as sable. However, the canine's wandering ways and stealing bring complaints from neighbors. Mam demands that Sable leave, and Pap finds her a good home with Doc Winston, whose land is surrounded by a high stone fence. Desolate but determined to win Sable back, Tate designs, buys the materials for, and builds her own fence. Weeks later, she visits Doc Winston and learns that the animal has disappeared. With the loss of Sable, Tate's focus shifts to helping her family; in turn, her father accepts her as an apprentice in his woodworking shop. An exceptional dog story-with a happy ending- whose length and pencil illustrations, one per chapter, make it attractive to young readers.

a touching story

Ten year old Tate Marshall lives with her Pap, a cabinet-maker, Mam, and Mam’s crimp-tailed cat Eden, in rural Vermont. Tate is lonely and wants a dog, but Mam hates dogs because she was torn up by one when she was a little girl. Then one October day a scrawny mutt turns up in the yard. It is dark brown except for a blaze of white on her chest and the tip of her tail. Tate names her Sable because her soft ears remind the girl of the sable fur trim on her Mam’s sweater.

Tate even persuades Mam and Pap to let her keep Sable. However, it isn’t long before the incorrigible dog begins to cause trouble by stealing from the neighbors. They complain to the Selectmen, and Mam and Pap decide that the dog must go, so Pap takes her to the home of Doctor Winston in Concord, NH, where he is installing some cabinets. The doctor says that Tate can come and see Sable at any time. A little later, Tate gets permission to hitch a ride with their neighbor, Mr. Cobb who has business in Concord, but when she arrives, she learns that Sable has run away. What will happen to Sable? Will Tate ever see her dog again?

Most books like this involve a boy and his dog, but this one is about a girl and her dog, though it should appeal to everyone. It is truly a touching story. Tate’s attitude is not always the best, but her reactions to various situations are perfectly natural, and everything works out all right in the end. Publishers Weekly calls it a “superbly structured work,” and the School Library Journal says that the narration “is as honest and direct as the character herself.” Young children who have dogs or have ever wanted to get a dog will appreciate this chapter book. The pencil-sketch pictures by illustrator Marcia Sewall, one per chapter, are quite homey.

Tugs at Your Heart

From early on I knew this was going to be a page-turner. I don't know if today's city-suburban children will be as moved by this realistic fiction as an ol' country boy, but I used up several facial tissues before I finished my read...at one sitting. Yes, I remember mam and pap for mon and pop and other country colloquialisms throughout.

The suspense is high, the drama very emotional, and the characters so realistic you feel you're among them via the reading. I read to primary and middle school classes and there are certain books that are just too emotional for me to read, and this is one--a colleague has to read such books for me.

The Creative Teacher: Activities for Language Arts (Grades 4 through 8 and Up)

The reading level is said to be grade 3 (ages 8-9), but the interest level will reach to adult; hey, some of us still enjoy picture books! (This book was originally published in 1994.)
