Democracy for citizens? Only if you are a "Corporate Person"
By Angel Wings
Michael Parenti leaves no stone unturned in explaining how it is the corporations ran away with our power of the vote. Particularly edifying is the chapter on the media--why don't they actually tell us the news that has effect on us? Whatever happened to "investigative journalism"? Why is it we don't even realize they are telling only one side of the story? Freedom of speech in America? ONLY IF YOU HAVE THE MONEY TO BUY IT. READ DEMOCRACY FOR THE FEW.

Parenti is brilliant!!
By T. Vega
I am using this book for my political science class and Michael Parenti's viewpoints are concise and accurate. He does an excellent job of using endnotes at the end of each chapter to allow for further research into some of the subjects he touches on. This book is definately an alternative viewpoint to what "the liberal media" deems fit to tell us.

the truth

This is the history they don't want you to know. You live in a capitalist state, and that has severe implications for democracy, race relations, the jobless/homless rate, the environment, and just about every social ill you can think of. Read it and pass it on

DESTINED. (Chapter 1)

Aurox

The human male’s flesh had been soft, pulpy.

It had been a surprise how easy it had been to destroy him—to end the beating of his feeble heart.

“Take me to North Tulsa. I want to go out into the night,” she’d said. That was the command that began their evening.

“Yes, Goddess,” he’d responded instantly, coming alive from the corner of the rooftop balcony that he’d made his own.

“Do not call me Goddess. Call me…” She’d looked contemplative. “… Priestess.” Her full lips, slick and reddened, turned up. “I believe it is best if everyone should simply call me Priestess—at least for a short while.”

Aurox had fisted his hand over his heart in a gesture he instinctively knew was ancient, though it somehow felt awkward and forced. “Yes, Priestess.”

Priestess had brushed by him, gesturing imperiously for him to follow her.

He had followed.

He’d been created to follow. To take her orders. To obey her commands.

They’d entered something Priestess had called car, and the world had flown. Priestess had commanded him to understand the workings of it.

He’d watched and learned, just as she’d commanded.

Then they’d stopped and exited the car.

The street had smelled of death and rot, corruption and filth.

“Priestess this place is not—”

“Protect me!” she’d snapped. “But do not be protective of me. I will always go where I wish, when I wish, and do exactly what I wish. It is your job, no, your purpose to defeat my enemies. It is my destiny to create enemies. Watch. React when I command you to protect. That is all I require of you.”

“Yes, Priestess,” he’d said.

The modern world was a confusing place. So many shifting sounds. So much he did not know. He would do as Priestess commanded. He would fulfill his reason for creation and—

A male had stepped out, blocking Priestess’s way.

“You way too pretty to be in this here alley so late with nothin’ but one boy keepin’ ya company.” His eyes widened, as he took in Priestess’s tattoos. “So, vampyre, you stoppin’ here to get you a little snack from this boy? How ’bout you give me that purse then you and me, we’ll talk ’bout what it’s like to be with a real man?”

Priestess sighed and sounded bored. “You’re wrong on both counts: I am not simply a vampyre, and this is no boy.”

“Hey, what you mean by that?”

Priestess ignored the man and looked over her shoulder at Aurox.

“Now you should protect me. Show me what kind of weapon I command.”

He obeyed her without conscious thought. Aurox closed on the man with no hesitation. In one swift movement, Aurox plunged his thumbs into the man’s staring eyeballs, which made the screaming begin.

The man’s terror washed over him, feeding him. As simply as drawing a breath, Aurox inhaled the pain he was causing. The power of the man’s terror swelled through him, pumping hot and cold. Aurox felt his hands hardening, changing, becoming more. What had been normal fingers became claws. He pulled them from the man’s eyes when the blood began to seep from his ears. With the borrowed power of pain and fear, Aurox lifted the man, slamming him against the wall of the nearest building.

The man screamed again.

What a wonderful, terrible thrill! Aurox felt more of the change ripple through his body. Mere human feet became cloven hooves. The muscles of his legs thickened. His chest heaved and split the shirt he had been wearing. And most wonderful of all, Aurox felt the thick deadly horns that swelled from his head.

By the time the man’s three friends ran into the alley to help him, he had stopped screaming.

Aurox dropped the man to the filth and turned to place himself between Priestess and those who might believe they could cause her harm.

“What the fuck?” The first man skidded to a halt.

“I ain’t never seen nothin’ like that,” said the second man.

Aurox was already absorbing the fear that was beginning to radiate from them. His skin pulsed with the cold fire of it.

“Is they horns? Ah, hell no! I’m outta here.” The third man turned and scurried back the way he had come. The other two began to back slowly away, eyes wide, shocked and staring.

Aurox looked to Priestess. “What is your command?” In some distant part of his mind, he wondered at the sound of his voice—how it had become so guttural, so bestial.

“Their pain makes you stronger.” Priestess looked pleased. “And different, more fierce.” She looked at the two retreating men and her full upper lip lifted in a sneer. “Isn’t that interesting … Kill them.”

Aurox moved so quickly the nearest man had no chance to escape. He gored him through his chest, lifting him so that he writhed and shrieked and soiled himself.

This made Aurox even more powerful.

With a mighty toss of his head, the skewered man flew into the building to land, crumpled and silent, beside the first man.

The other man didn’t run away. Instead he pulled out a long, dangerous looking knife and charged at Aurox.

Aurox feinted to the side and then, when the man overcompensated, he stomped a cloven hoof through his foot, ripping off his face as the man fell forward.

Breathing hard, Aurox stood over the bodies of his vanquished enemies. He turned to Priestess.

“Very good,” she said in her emotionless voice. “Let us leave this place before the authorities descend.”

Aurox followed her. He walked heavily, his hoofs gouging furrows in the dirty alley. He fisted his claws at his side as he tried to make sense of the emotional storm that flowed through his body, taking with it the power that had fueled his battle frenzy.

Weak. He felt weak. And more. There was something else.

“What is it?” she snapped at him when he hesitated before entering the car again.

He shook his head. “I do not know. I feel—”

She laughed. “You don’t feel at all. You’re obviously overthinking this. My knife doesn’t feel. My gun doesn’t feel. You’re my weapon; you kill. Deal with it.”

“Yes, Priestess.” Aurox got in the car and let the world speed past him. I do not think. I do not feel. I am a weapon.

Aurox

“Why are you standing here looking at me?” Priestess asked him, staring at him with eyes of green ice.

“I await your command, Priestess,” he said automatically, wondering how it was possible to have displeased her. They had just returned to her lair at the top of the magnificent building called Mayo. Aurox had walked to the balcony and simply stood there, quietly, gazing at Priestess.

She blew out a long breath. “I have no command for you at this moment. And must you always stare at me?”

Aurox looked away, focusing on the lights of the city and how they glittered alluringly against the night sky.

“I await your command, Priestess,” he repeated.

“Oh, by all the gods! Who would have known the Vessel created for me would be as mindless as he is beautiful?”

Aurox felt the change in the atmosphere before Darkness materialized from smoke and shadow and night.

“Mindless, beautiful, and deadly…”

The voice rang in his head. The enormous white bull formed fully before him. His breath was fetid, yet sweet. His gaze was horrible and wonderful at the same time. He was mystery and magick and mayhem together.

Aurox dropped to his knees before the creature.

“Get off your knees. Get up and go back there…” She waved her hand in a dismissive gesture toward the shadows that edged the far recesses of the rooftop.

“No, I’d rather he stayed. I enjoy gazing on my creations.”

Aurox didn’t know what to say. This creature commanded his attention, but Priestess commanded his body.

“Creations?” Priestess put a special emphasis on the last part of the word as she moved languidly toward the massive bull. “Do you often make gifts like this to your followers?”

The bull’s laughter was terrible, but Aurox noticed Priestess didn’t flinch at all—that instead she seemed to be drawn closer and closer to the creature as he spoke.

“How interesting! You are actually questioning me. Are you jealous, my heartless one?”

Priestess stroked the bull’s horn. “Do I need to be?”

The bull nuzzled her. Where his muzzle touched Priestess the silk of her gown shriveled, exposing smooth, naked flesh underneath.

“Tell me, what do you believe is the purpose of my gift to you?” The bull answered Priestess’s question with one of his own.

Priestess blinked and shook her head, as if she was confused. Then her gaze found Aurox, still on his knees. “My lord, his purpose is protection, and I am ready to do as you bid to thank you for him.”

“I will accept your lush offerings, but I must explain to you that Aurox is not simply a weapon of protection. Aurox has one purpose, and that is to create chaos.”

Priestess inhaled a deep, shocked breath. She blinked rapidly, and her gaze went from the bull to him, and then returned to the bull.

“Truly?” she asked in a soft, reverent voice. “Through this one creature I can command chaos?”

The bull’s...

The books are not getting any better..
By Vampvixen
I'm going to agree with some other reviewers and sum up the way I feel about the book. It was disappointing. It was short and lacked a new story line and more resolutions of past dramas. For example, Neferet is still the bad guy, still doing whatever she wants, and even though Zoey is so powerful she still hasn't been able to do anything about it? How many more books are they going to continue battling the same people and the same problems. Let them win over Neferet and if you want to continue the series, create a new villain who provides different challenges. I feel like they are just extending the series to make more money out of each individual book, the last two books could have been one and it could have made more sense. Again, I know this is a YA book but the writing is terrible sometimes especially when they use made up words like "gihugic" every other sentence. The books seem to be regressing because the earlier ones were for YA but were mature and entertaining enough to be enjoyed by an older demographic as well. This one not so much. I'm with the viewer that says if the next book doesn't progress, I'm dropping this series.

Destined for a Long Drawn Out Death
By Kale
With new lows in discrimination tactless and untasteful language Destined tests the boundaries and beyond in terms of YA. The latest edition of HON perfectly demonstrates the frustrations of a great concept being smothered by an overly indulgent publishing contract, unnessarily complex mythologies, world building, and increasingly neglected characters. Yup. It's just as bad as it's predecessors.

Zoe&Co Inc. are back in yet another been-there-read-that installment of the House of Night. In this episode Scooby Doo and Crew are trying to expose Neferet to the council (yet again) and find out what really happened on the night of Z's mom's murder.

Surprisingly Destined had an individual story arc. Something that has eluded past installments for quite a few books. Unfortunately good bones aside, Destined is written in the prose of the truly awful. I understand that Zoe and company are supposed to be typical trendy teenagers with relevant age appropriate voices, but the slang only manages to come across immature and ignorant instead of current. I get that the authors are trying to create irony with characters like Kramisha but it just doesn't work and becomes demeaning. The real irony is how an english teacher and an accomplished poet managed to compose the most inelegant, inarticulate, uneducated sounding young people ever immortalized in a published work. Along with bad dialogue the Cast's somehow consistently manages to turn what should be a shared reader/character experience of the emotional upheaval and devastation that occurs after death, into a load of corn and camp. I wish they would stop trying to mix grieving with pop references, not only does it diminish the impact of the situation, but it makes the whole passage awkward to read. The authors were dropping so many brand names that I felt like the book was sponsored by pop culture and local businesses and I was expecting ads to show up between the pages or a commercial to pop up in the middle of my audiobook.

I started getting the audiobook version a few books back because i just couldn't get through the hardcopy but the language has gotten so bad I'm not sure even that will suffice the next go around. The narration is ok but the horribly stereotypical cliches are infinitely pronounced.

In other bad news, Destined marks Zoey's return to boyfriend indecision. We are once again subjected to the whims of too many would be suitors. Just when you think the field has been narrowed down, someone's reincarnated, or thrown back into the mix due to some alliance or circumstance. And then we are led to dislike Z's current boy toy (again) in a story line that has no other purpose but to add more fluff now and maybe an out later.

While I applaud the author's attempt at going green, I would prefer they recycle materials rather than plots. I feel no satisfaction, only dizziness from circling the same themes of give salvation a chance & encroaching darkness this way comes, but it's only temporary because Zoe&Co. still don't trust Erik, Stark, or Raphiam. The whipping boy club and their vows to the goddess don't seem to mean anything since they're the one's the authors' choose to be vulnerable all the time. The main lesson is nothing but a contradiction. I can understand throwing some devolving into the mix but when it's every character in a similar position the device just gets tired and no one seems to grow or learn from past mistakes. Of course it's not like they have very many role models. With the addition of Lenobia's filler side lines they're venturing more and more adult or becoming less and less interested in YA. I think they should just age up the characters already. There's no order or structure for these teens they live more like off-campus college students than high school boarders.

There was one bright and shining beacon of hope, fresh meat aka a new fledgling. I actually found myself interested. I mean really, really interested in the story since the third book and wanting to invest into this character and her thread. It reminded me why i got so caught up in this series way back before the monstrosity HON has become. I think the authors should make like Mead, end this already, and start fresh. Mead was smart and kept some of the characters we know and love but didn't overkill VA. They need new characters and a new locale. Things that have already been established within the series, so it's all already there. The duo of Cast may have made this kind of transition difficult for themselves though. They have too many new and existing storylines in this book, no doubt to fill their contract quota. So it would be hard to close this wild runaway beast out. The mythology is too diverse and at the same time really specific to the local native american culture, this can help or hinder a spin off series, set at say the Chicago HON. On the one hand they can tailor the ideas to a new heroine on the other there are no rules or boundaries for their belief system which adds to the chaotic jumble already in need of taming. Also they might have made Zoey too special, too powerful, this leaves no room to grow or expand a new lead heroine for a spin off. Where can they really go with it when Z is supposed to be Nix incarnate. But I think these problems could be ironed out, some of the characters salvaged, to remake this series into something good again. Too bad no one listens to me.

I wish Cast&Cast JR would make a decision and stick with it, pick a path and stay the course. It's no wonder HON has become so stagnant we've been on the same page for the past three books, recycling the same themes with different characters. Funny how Lenobia states in this very book, her like of change, yet we still can't seem to get any.

Get to the point!
By Kate
I really like the first few books in this series but its getting really redunant. How many times can these kids battle some new Neferet creation before someone figures out that the chick is whacked out of her mind? I just finished this latest book and it wasnt that great. First off, whats with all the horrible grammer? I know the characters are kids and have their own lingo but its horrible to read. All the aints, and gonnas, and crap, its aweful! And I know Zoeys grandma is native american but is this book her "accent" is so much more pronounced that it sounds sterotypical and out of place since it wasnt that bad in previous books. The second frustrating thing is that it was mostly about Rephiam and his humanity, Zoey was totally a secondary character. And why all of a sudden are the twins at odds? Why keep throwing out these unnecessary subplots, just get to a point already! If the now inevitable next book isnt more action packed and clear, I am giving up on the series. Im tired of wasting the time and money for mediocre books.

Emmy and the Incredible Shrinking Rat (Emmy and the Rat), by Lynne Jonell

Emmy was a good girl. At least she tried very hard to be good. She did her homework without being told. She ate all her vegetables, even the slimy ones. And she never talked back to her nanny, Miss Barmy, although it was almost impossible to keep quiet, some days.

She really was a little too good. Which is why she liked to sit by the Rat. The Rat was not good at all . . .

Hilarious, inventive, and irresistably rodent-friendly, Emmy and the Incredible Shrinking Rat is a fantastic first novel from acclaimed picture book author Lynne Jonell.

From School Library Journal
Starred Review. Grade 3–6—Emmy Addison was perfectly happy as the daughter of bookstore owners—and then her parents inherited a lot of money and she suddenly became invisible. She can't understand why her formerly attentive and loving mother and father keep taking off for faraway places and leaving her in the hands of an incredibly controlling nanny named Miss Barmy. And no one at school seems to know she exists. Then, she is bitten by the classroom rat and discovers that she can understand every word he says, as can Joe, one of the cool kids in her class who was also bitten. At this point, events start to unfold and a fast-paced adventure begins. To Joe's chagrin, he discovers that a second bite makes a person shrink to the size of an action figure and Emmy discovers that Miss Barmy has been mixing animal essences together to control the Addisons' lives. With the aid of new animal friends, Emmy embarks upon a perilous path to undo the evil nanny's sinister plans. A mystery is cleverly woven into this fun and, at times, hilarious caper, and children are likely to find themselves laughing out loud during some parts. A medley of endearing characters adds to an already delightful read.—Robyn Gioia, Bolles School, Ponte Vedra, FL

From Booklist
*Starred Review* Emmy's world has turned upside down. Since her family inherited a fortune, her parents have become obsessed with status and money, her teachers and fellow students ignore her, and her welfare has been left in the hands of her coldhearted nanny, Miss Barmy. Now, she can hear the class pet, a rat, talking. What's going on? Jonell takes readers on a merry, sometimes scary, romp, as Emmy enters the Antique Rat store and learns about a world of rodents with eclectic powers that are being used by Miss Barmy to get control of Emmy's family and their fortune. Although the considerable action is sometimes convoluted, and a couple of dropped story lines are hastily stitched up, this tale turns smoothly on its fanciful premise and fabulous characters. As in so many stories featuring a rat, the sneaky rodent gets the best lines; so it is here with Rat, who is by turns boastful, whiny, maudlin, and menacing. It's fun to watch remarkably good Emmy and especially bad Barmy spar, and the revelation of the nanny's secret admirer speaks to the endurance of true love. Inside, the book is decorated with a picture of a tree limb and a climbing rat. Flip the pages, and Rat tumbles and falls. Cooper, Ilene

Emmy and the Incredible Shrinking Rat
By Kirsten G. Cutler
A diabolical nanny, a clever thoughtful little girl and a talking rat face off in this deliciously witty and intelligent story. Emmy is an exceedingly well-behaved girl who enjoyed life with her parents and had many friends before an inheritance from a great uncle brings an end to cozy family interactions and Emmy and her parents move to her Great-Uncle's mansion. Now Emmy attends a new school, her parents are always off traveling and Emmy is supervised by Miss Barmy, a very unpleasant and strange nanny who is constantly tearing down her self- esteem and giving her mysterious medicines, one turned her face orange. Her classmates and teacher hardly notice her, "Emma? Emmaline Addison?" Mr. Herbifore gazed out over the heads of his students. Emmy stood up. "No, I don't see her," he said into the phone. "Emmy walked forward and stood by the teacher's desk. What did she have to do, she wondered, bewildered. Throw firecrackers under his chair? Hang from the ceiling and make like a monkey? She tugged at the teacher's sleeve and spoke loudly in his ear. "Here I am, Mr. Herbifore." The teacher stared at her doubtfully. Oh? Are you sure?" One day, the classroom rat tells her that she is too nice, "A little meanness is good for the soul. I highly recommend it." At the end of an entertaining repartee that includes Rat's response to Emmy's surprised comment, "Rodents play soccer?" "Of course they play soccer, he snapped. What do you think they do for fun? Run about, frightening elephants? Scavenge in churches for crumbs? Really, your ignorance is appalling." Rat pleads with Emmy to release him from his cage and when she does this engaging story explodes with adventure, suspense, and humor.

A satisfying read from beginning to end.
By J. M. Urbanovic
Lynne has created an instant classic; it reminds me of my favorite stories like Stowaway to the Mushroom Planet and Chitty, Chitty, Bang, Bang. Her story has memorable characters that you'll love and enjoy right from the start and a storyline that combines mystery, magic, real life problems and wonderful, droll humor. It's delightful to watch Emmy break out of her "too goodness" to solve the mystery and to save her family. Not to mention saving not just herself but all of her newly made friends. It's gripping, its a bit scary, its funny and comforting. It is a satisfying read from beginning to end that I think kids and adults both would enjoy.

...talky rodents that aren't abhorrent, parents who don't care and a nasty au pair...
By H. Bala
Most importantly, no rodents were harmed in the making of this book. Just as importantly, there's a sequel to this book, which gladdens me because Lynne Jonell's quirky EMMY AND THE INCREDIBLE SHRINKING RAT may be intended for middle grade readers, but it's a universal truth that talking rat stories recognize no age boundaries. If you've got a yen for something in the vein of Stuart Little, Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of Nimh, or the Redwall series, take a chance on EMMY AND THE INCREDIBLE SHRINKING RAT.

Poor Emmaline Augusta Addison, a lonely little girl whose very rich parents are always away gallivanting around the world. Emmy has earned straight A's in class and won all sorts of trophies and ribbons for her ballet accomplishments, all in a futile effort to garner attention from her parents. In school, her presence barely registers on her classmates and teacher. And almost as unbearable as her parents' neglect are the icy ministrations of her quite frightening nanny, Miss Barmy. But one day in class Emmy, being ignored as usual, on a whim begins talking to the classroom rat kept in a cage. Who then talks right back, quite rudely. It's that kind of book. Emmy comes away from their dialogue knowing that the Rat scoffs at her being too nice a person.

Accompanied by the Rat, Emmy soon embarks on a very strange adventure, peopled with an unpleasant rat catcher, a shrunken professor, sentient rodents gifted with peculiar properties, and the sinister nanny Miss Barmy. In this adventure, we root for Emmy as she tries to rise above various perils and also her innate "niceness." In the course of things, Emmy learns that her loneliness and her parents' neglect are all tied into a nasty scheme, and you can probably guess who's behind that (*cough* nanny).

There's an interesting Roald Dahl vibe going on with EMMY AND THE INCREDIBLE SHRINKING RAT. Lynne Jonell juxtaposes real world situations with curious fantasy elements, unlikely science experiments, a dash of dark humor, and a sense of the macabre. There is also some rather pointed commentary about uncaring parents and about the news media's vulture-like tendencies.

I relished the interplay between the humans and the anthropomorphized creatures, and I dug the creativity of Jonell coming up with the magical rodents, and the sheer variety of their respective attributes. Most of these rats, mice, chipmunks, beavers, marmots and other assorted rodents are kept locked up in a shop and their services made available for a fee. Potions and spells are then crafted which can promote forgetfulness, follicle growth, a sudden reduction in height, etc. There's even a concoction which, when taken by a person, allows anyone within hearing distance to, uh, sniff out that person's lies. And, of all these special creatures, the Endear Mouse is easily my favorite. She is a-friggin'-dorable.

Crude and cravenly and yet, for all that, managing to be likeable and funny, the Rat is the book's breakout character. One bite from the Rat allows you to communicate with him. A second bite shrinks you to smaller than a Barbie doll - that's why he's called the Shrinking Rat of Schenectady. Ah, but what happens when he bites you a third time?

For all the cute enchanted shenanigans gracing the book, a dark undertone weaves in and out, and this is brought about by Miss Barmy, an intense malevolent presence. Miss Barmy is the anti-Mary Poppins and, like all monsters in those really good fairy tales, she plays for keeps and doesn't seem to realize she's in a kid-friendly story. You really don't want to be taking her remedies and potions and baked "goods" (or as I like to call them, baked "evils"). Miss Barmy, unrepentantly wicked and calculating, really ramps up the suspense.

As a cherry on top, illustrator Jonathan Bean works his own magic and enables you to rapidly flip the pages and watch the Rat in animated motion as he falls from a tree only to land safely on Emmy's hands. I like flip books - they cater to both young and old. That's another universal truth.

Sexy, captivating read
By Julie Pitzel
In the third book of her Dark Sword Novels, Donna Grant has once again delivered a sexy captivating read.

Warrior, Quinn MacLeod is the youngest of three brothers cursed with a god inside of him--a god that gives him immortality and great power, but fights to take control of his soul. Consumed by rage and remorse over the slaughter of his wife and child, he has done little to control the god for the past three centuries. Now trapped by Deirdre, an evil druid, he must learn to rule his god or be responsible for the creation of an even greater evil.

Mercail has also been captured, but she is protected by deadly spells. Deirdre has Marcail thrown into the Pit hoping the Warrior's trapped there will kill Marcail and destroy her powerful secret. Instead, Quinn falls for the beautiful young woman and fights to protect her.

WICKED HIGHLANDER is a dark, sensual romance. I highly recommend this series to anyone who likes magic, passion and rugged highlanders.

Wonderful Book, hope there are more in the series!
By Ellen C. Ziegler
Great author, Great Book! I could not put it down. Donna Grant is a terrific author. I happily just discovered her. I love the Murray family series by Hannah Howell, all of the series by Mary Balogh, Judith McNaught, Lisa Kleypas, and Johanna Lindsay's Mallory family. I was worried that I would not be able to find another author once I depleted the others. Thankfully, I found Donna Grant. I was worried about the paranormal stuff, but once I read the first, I could not wait to read the other two. I highly recommend this book and hope there will be books in this series.

Amazon.com Review
When (not if---the deal has already been signed) this terrific thriller gets made into a movie, you might see Morgan Freeman as a crusty lawyer who specializes in taking on the military establishment tell the actress playing ace Boston barrister and Harvard Law professor Claire Heller Chapman, "Every civilian who's ever gone into a military general court-martial and tried to attack the foundations of the military has lost his case. No exceptions. The military is a tight, closed fraternity. They take it real serious. Military justice is a deadly serious business." Claire has to realize this as she prepares to defend her husband--the man she knows as Tom Chapman, but who the Army says is Ron Kubik-- on charges that he took part in a massacre of 87 civilians in San Salvador 13 years before. Full of doubts about Tom's innocence and her own ability to prove it in an unfamiliar arena, Claire is brought to exciting, moving life by the extravagantly gifted Joseph Finder, whose previous thrillers (Extraordinary Powers, The Zero Hour) are available in paperback.

From Library Journal
Finder's Zero Hour (LJ 4/1/96) was a dynamite blockbuster, and his new work is slated for the same big marketing treatment. Cinematic qualities predominate as the dialog roles on page after page with taut give-and-take and sudden plot turns that leave little time for reflection or description. (Not surprisingly, the novel is slated to become a Tri-Star Pictures motion picture.) The plot is arrow-straight: a woman lawyer, at the top of her profession, must defend her husband in a military court for his alleged horrific crimes while serving in Vietnam. Steeped in the arcane detail of military justice, with a tough-mouthed heroine and a hardworking support cast, this is not likely to be a candidate for Oprah's Book Club, but it is a sure bet for most thriller collections.?Barbara Conaty, Library of Congress

From Kirkus Reviews
Turning from international intrigue (The Zero Hour, 1996, etc.) to courtroom drama--think A Few Good Men starring a wife defending her husband--Finder spins his tightest web yet. When the cops run the prints in Tom Chapman's Boston house-- a routine procedure after a burglary there--they make an electrifying discovery: Fair-haired broker Tom is really Sgt. Ronald Kubik, an Army deserter wanted for the massacre of 87 unarmed civilians--the entire population of the El Salvadorean village of La Colina--during a botched covert operation back in 1985. At least that's what the FBI and the Army say. What Tom tells his wife Claire Heller, a rising star at Harvard Law, is that although, yes, he's Kubik--and that everything he's ever told Claire about his past is therefore a lie--everything else about the official story they're booking him on is a setup designed to hide the guilt of his detachment's former commanding officer, Colonel William O. Marks, now General Marks, the Army's Chief of Staff, who's been determined to scapegoat Kubik, if only the Army could find him. Can Claire believe Tom (actually Ron) this time? As she and her dogged co-counsels on Tom's top-secret court-martial dig deeper into the case, there are ominous traces of a coverup: vanished exculpatory documents, fortuitously deceased witnesses, glaring inconsistencies between the stories Detachment 27's men told in 1985 and on the stand. Yet so successful is the coverup, and so unyielding the regulations concerning national security, that Claire, stonewalled again and again despite her brilliant handling of the government's witnesses, despairs of clearing her husband by confronting General Marks (an obvious Jack Nicholson role) with his perfidy- -unless she can somehow make the iron procedures of military justice work for the defense. Rattling good entertainment right to the final inevitable twist. Tri-Star should blow A Few Good Men right off the map. This One's A Keeper!
By Gabby Hayze
The protagonist of this thriller is a woman attorney who is described as "winning the tough cases." One of those "tough cases" she won involves getting a rapist's conviction overturned on a technicality. So, Finder has written Claire Heller as a brilliant and gifted attorney, but I wanted to know more about the woman who finds legal loopholes to free rapists rather than just the smart attorney side of her. What I liked about High Crimes was that Finder didn't lose sight of the person behind the attorney and how what she does for a living affects her in all parts of her life.
When Claire Heller finds out that the man who helped her through a rocky time in her life, and who she then eventually came to love and marry, is not the person she thought he was, she's stunned and torn between who and what to believe. Then the professional attorney part of her kicks in, and she decides to defend the man she married, no matter who he is, against charges that he massacred 87 innocent people in El Salvador when he was part of a Special Services Unit in the armed forces. For those who enjoy courtroom drama and tactics, this book certainly delivers on all counts. As others before me have said, it was hard to put this one down because the story keeps developing with new levels of information that dig deeper into who Claire's husband really is and whether he could have done the horrible crimes for which he is accused. While Claire dilligently works to collect whatever evidence she can use to clear her husband of his charges, she never loses sight of the fact that if he isn't who she believed him to be, then what kind of man did she marry?
Ultimately she gets her answers in a very well written ending.
I haven't read any of Finder's other books, but on the basis of this one, I'm interested in reading more of his work. It has been a while since I've read a book that was difficult to put down while at the same time made me aware of just what it is lawyers do to win cases for people who are accused, and are possibly guilty of, heinous crimes. Finder's descriptions are so clear and vivid, I was right there in the courtroom with Claire experiencing the action through a spectator's eyes. One cross-examination in particular was just riveting and shows off Finder's writing talent perfectly.
I gave this book 5 stars because 6 stars wasn't an option. Yep, it's THAT good! From everything I've heard and read, we should all skip the movie and either read or reread the book. That way we certainly won't be disappointed!

Few Titles Compare, Absolutely Genius!
By Keith Kimmel
As someone who despises the corruption far too often found in American government and fascinated with the workings of our legal system - both civilian and otherwise - this title really was a grand slam with me. It was entertaining while still being down to earth and representative of the issues any trial lawyer with scruples must wrestle with.
The pace at which this title keeps the reader turning pages is ferocious and accuracy of the legal events in the title is astounding. At the same time, a sense of realism and a sense of normalcy is maintained throughout. At several times the reader is startled by unexpected events to keep him going.
But perhaps the most startling event of all is the ending. In nearly all cases... the knowledgeable reader already has a good idea what the ending will be before reading 75% of the title and is rarely shocked by the ending. There are plenty of hairpin turns and sharp corners in this book, none are more abrupt than the ending which leave the reader both satisfied and puzzled.

This is a real page-turner!
By A Customer
This was the first book by Joseph Finder I have ever read. Seldom do I encounter a book which I truly hate to see end. Finder is as exciting, albeit more readable, than Robert Ludlum. His villains are menacing, his characters are people you care about, and the endings have unique twists. The ending of High Crimes was a total, yet logical, surprise. I was so impressed I immediately read Zero Hour, and currently have his other two books in my home. This is a writer who I will be reading from now on, every time a new book appears. Great, great stuff!

Genesis: Chapter and Verse, by Phil Collins, Peter Gabriel, Tony Banks, Mike Rutheford, Steve Hackett

The long-awaited, definitive story of one of the most creative and commercial rock groups of all time, Genesis

One of the most imaginative, courageous, and unpredictable music acts ever, Genesis evolved from pioneers of progressive music in the 1970s to a global phenomenon, topping charts and selling over 150 million albums worldwide. The story of their band spans thirty years and thirty albums, and through all the changes in the band's line-up and musical direction, the spirit of Genesis has remained constant and undimmed.

Genesis: Chapter & Verse is the ultimate addition to any fan's collection, setting the record straight as the band's members tell their story their way. Remarkably, the band survived the high-profile departure of not one lead vocalist, but two (Peter Gabriel and Phil Collins), two influential guitarists (Anthony Phillips and Steve Hackett), and its best-known drummer (Phil Collins). Genesis simply got stronger and bigger - matching the huge solo success of Gabriel, Collins, and Mike + The Mechanics.

A collaboration between all the members of Genesis, past and present, Genesis: Chapter and Verse is the band's definitive autobiography: an intimate, no-holds-barred, no-stone-unturned history that allows character and personality to come to the forefront. Covering the band's story as well as the writing and performance of significant songs from each period, this treasure trove of text and photographs provides long-awaited insight into the way this exceptional group of songwriters worked together, allowing the band to dispatch more than a few sacred cows along the way. It is a book like none other, and an exclusive look into the life and times of one of rock's most influential and lasting groups.

Chapter & Verse - The Parable of Genesis
By Matthew Haag
Some Genesis fans might come across this book and wonder if it is worth buying. These are times that definitely try the wallets and household budgets of Genesis fans: Boxsets of surround-sound reissues, a tour of Europe and America that some fans were lucky to see (I'm one!), and a forthcoming live album/DVD of said tour! Some fans might place a measly book about Genesis at the bottom of their "To-Do" lists, if they put it on at all.

However, fans might want to reconsider that. This autobiography of sorts pieces together the story of Genesis through the best perspective available - the band members themselves. Remarkably, every single musician who has participated in Genesis' 40-year history is present and accounted for in this book, offering their recollections of the band through interviews conducted as recent as 2006. As editor Philip Dodd notes in his introduction, Genesis were not a part of the sex, drugs, and rock n' roll crowd of legend. With Genesis, it has always been about the music and, as this book shows, that's certainly something to be proud of!

The standard plot of Genesis - the band started, Peter left, Phil became the singer, and everyone lived happily ever after - is handily recounted in much greater detail than any book or documentary has done previously. Considerable time is also spent on the band's formative pre-Collins years of 1968 to 1970. And despite the constant focus on Phil Collins from those not completely familiar with Genesis, the story recounted here does not center on him. Here, Phil Collins is more of a cog in the wheel, and rightfully so. In fact, a total of five drummers besides Collins would sit at the drums for Genesis. Each gets their chance in the spotlight in a running series of sidebars throughout the book entitled "The Drummer's Tale".

Another portion of the book deals with the formulation and success of the Banks/Collins/Rutherford trio in the 1980s and 1990s. There is a strong friendship there and this book does an admirable job showcasing it. Peter Gabriel also offers his insights, although in a somewhat rambling manner. Steve Hackett does the same (and sometimes gets way too mystical about the whole business). Ray Wilson and Nir Zidkyahu offer comment on their important, albeit short and often overlooked, experiences too. The book is slightly (and I underscore slightly) troubled by some odd gaffes in proofreading though. Chester Thompson was not born in 1968 as noted in the appendix, thus did not start playing with Genesis when he was 9. I don't think he's THAT good a drummer! At another point, the 2007 tour of Europe and America is referred to as the "Turn It Up Again" tour. Well, Tony, Mike, and Phil are getting on in age...that might've been a better idea!

Beyond the members of the band though, the book also features fascinating portraits of those who supported the band over the years. The late record execs Tony Stratton-Smith and Ahmet Ertegun both figure heavily into the story of Genesis. While Stratton-Smith passed away in 1987 and is recounted through other participants, Ahmet Ertegun's contribution to this book was completed shortly before his death in 2006. By all accounts in this book, both men were perhaps as influential on the band as the actual band members themselves. Both execs had good ears and a good sense of where to put their money, even if it meant not always getting the best return. Genesis fans owe them both quite a lot!

And that is what emerges as the most compelling part of "Chapter & Verse". Genesis existed in a time when immediate record sales and high profit margins did not necessarily dictate what was supported by record companies and executives. Long chastised by critics (and some fans) for being a band that "sold out" for hits, Genesis recorded and toured for years without having a major hit single. From 1970 to 1992, Genesis only ever had one #1 song in the US. And while they did have enough singles to later fill a greatest hits album, these only came in the twilight of the band's career after nearly a dozen albums. Could bands today exist in such circumstances? I'm not so sure.

"Chapter & Verse" is ultimately the story of a group of musicians who succeeded by playing the music they wanted how they wanted. They didn't "go with the flow" of what was popular at the time. They weren't cutthroats to others either (or to each other, for that matter). The story Genesis and the music that emerged, in all of its many parts, eras, and stages of development, is something fans hardly need to be ashamed of. Here endth the lesson.

Genesis fans rejoice!
By K. D. Schon
Full disclosure: Although I am a 49 year old male, my love for Genesis (and all things "Genesis-y") is comparable to that of a 13 year old girl's crazed, glassy eyed dementia at a Fall Out Boy concert. And I know this to be true for a fact, because I have actually BEEN to a FOB concert, although my 13 year old is my son, and he is neither demented nor glassy-eyed, just an incredibly talented musician and singer in his own right who has found a band to embrace - much as I did with Genesis at the exact same age. Like me, he plays bass and writes his own songs and is in a band which bickers and argues over arcane lyrics and chord progressions - much as Genesis themselves did, surprisingly often, as revealed by this completely absorbing and delightful book.

I have a copy (somewhere) of Armando Gallo's original 1978 book (which he kindly signed for me, even though I ambushed him while he was working) - and this is nothing like that book or any other book on Genesis for that matter. This is in all respects, the true "Book of Genesis" as told by Genesis - every single member, former member, sideman (Chester Thompson, Daryl Steurmer, Bill Bruford) and significant other "tells the tale" - and quite a tale it is.

Finally it seems all rumors may rest in peace concerning Peter's departure, Steve's departure, Phil's departure, even Anthony Phillips' departure - and how the shifting line-up and changing dynamics led the band from their desire to be the "next Beatles" to what they are today - a completely unique, almost uncaterogizable entity that has bred, incubated, and then unleashed upon the earth some of the most complex, and unforgettable music that I have ever heard or even DREAMED of hearing. Genesis spawned Peter Gabriel, Steve Hackett, Phil Collins, Mike (Rutherford) and the Mechanics, and Tony Banks' solo ventures - all with their own unique style, yet none of the solo acts were Genesis - just as a sack of flour can't be bread without yeast and water....

This last tour (concluded on 10/13/07 at the Hollywood Bowl, and yes, I was there, with my girlfriend and my 72 year old mother - both of them seeing the band for the second time, my girlfriend on the previous night, my mother in 1978) engendered mixed feelings in me - first of utter delight that the boys were coming back (I had despaired of ever seeing them live again) and then of complete disgust (face price tickets nearing $400 each) and then back to utter delight - they're back, I'm not 13, and neither is the target audience, either for this book, or the tour, or the remastered albums (ALL of them, in glorious 5.1 surround) or the $1000 "road cases" with soundboard recordings of every show in a signed road case... they know their demographic, Phil cracked jokes about the age of the audience and the band alike ("I remember when we all had hair') at all three of the concerts I attended (Boston and Los Angeles)... and they know we can afford, most of us anyway, to indulge our nostalgia - and take our OWN children (my 11 year old daughter and my 13 year old son both attended the concert in Boston - they are huge fans and I guess they would have to be - Genesis and Peter Gabriel have been the soundtrack for most of their lives.

Each of the band members is interviewed at length and the interviews are broken up and dispersed through the book - individual albums are discussed at length, horror stories of malfunctioning equipment, power struggles, general grumpiness, ego-tampering - the usual rock band stuff with one huge caveat - Genesis never was and never will be anything "usual".

The candid behind-the-scene photographs are great fun and the stage shots are simply breathtaking (although I myself took better ones back in the day when cameras were allowed - it's true, and not cellphone cams either.)

For true fans only - all others fergit it.. If you don't "get" Genesis by now, you never will. And I would especially caution those who "discovered" Genesis around the "Invisible Touch" era - you will have NO idea what all the fuss is about unless you drank the Kool-aid and dove into the back catalog. If you did, sit down... welcome to the Home By The Sea...
